Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Go All Retro For 2024

It's hard not to look back with over eight decades of off-roading history on the books.

Wrangler low down concept.

Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.

2024 jeep willys dispatcher concept

Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.

Gladiator High Top Concept

The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.

2024 jeep vacationeer concept

Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.

The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concept Vehicles: Retro Willys Dispatcher, Overlanding Wagoneer & More

Every year, we wait like giddy school children in anticipation of the annual Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles. It’s a magical time, when the Jeep engineering teams develop a caravan of wild, groundbreaking concepts—some are throwbacks, some are futuristic—but they are all equally delightful.

And lo and behold, the 2024 lineup of EJS concepts carries on that tradition, so let’s take a closer look at them.

Jeep Low Down

2024 Jeep® Low Down Concept for easter jeep safari

Either the Jeep folks are big Boz Scaggs fans ( who isn’t, right? ), or the name Low Down refers to the stock ride height on this particular concept. Yup, Jeep engineers were able to stuff massive 42 inch BFGoodrich tires under a Wrangler—without the need for a suspension lift.

transparent hood and engine bay of jeep low down concept 2024

The end result is a Jeep Wrangler that almost looks like it’s squatting down on the trail, giving the rig plenty of stability while offering significantly improved ground clearance, and breakover and departure angles.

The Low Down is powered by a 392 Hemi V8 sending oomph to a pair of Dana 60 axles—to quote the aforementioned Scaggs, “[this] baby’s into running around.”

Jeep High Top

2024 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon High Top easter jeep Concept

In contrast to the Low Down, the 2024 High Top concept gets pumped up with an AccuAir Air Suspension . Based on a JT Gladiator Rubicon, the truck features a handy DECKED truck bed storage system out back too. High Top rolls on a set of 18 inch KMC Beadlock Wheels wrapped in 40 inch BFG rubber.

Our favorite part? That paint job—a shade that Jeep calls Ginger Snap metallic. *Chef’s Kiss*

Jeep Vacationeer

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept with rooftop shelter deployed

With its rooftop shelter deployed, it’s easy to see why this one got the name “Vactioneer.”

The Wagoneer-derived overlanding rig features a RedTail Overland Skyloft covered in solar panels. Look closer and you’ll see a winch tucked behind the bumper, along with a set of nifty Method Race Wheels .

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept front

It’s riding on a 1.5 inch lift and has some subtle fender flares molded into the body. And yeah, the Vacationeer is packing that new twin-turbo Hurricane six under the hood.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept

OK, shut up and take our money, Jeep.

For starters, white painted steelies look good on eeeeeverything. Toss in a vintage Warn Winch and an embossed WILLYS on the hood, and the Dispatcher is our favorite out of the 2024 crop of Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles.

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept rear

The name itself hearkens back to the two-wheel drive DJs—which you may know better as Mail Jeeps —but this Dispatcher is powered by the familiar 4xe plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Fancy hybrid tech is a wickedly retro wrapper. Obligatory.

2024’s Easter Jeep Safari Concepts Are Odes to the Old School

Meet the Low Down, the Dispatcher, the High Top and the Vacationeer

Jeep unveiled four concepts for the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, each with a throwback element.

It’s that time of year again — Easter Jeep Safari, a week in which thousands of avid Jeep enthusiasts descend on Moab, Utah to celebrate a beloved American icon. Jeep itself is back once again with a set of concepts that aim to capture the imagination of those dedicated fans, including the Low Down, Willys Dispatcher, High Top and Vacationeer.

While there aren’t as many concepts as some past years, these four do bring a diverse set of powertrains to the table — pretty much every option you can get with a Jeep model in 2024. From the tried-and-true Pentastar V6 to the (departing) big Hemi V8, the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the new Hurricane turbo inline-six, one of these concepts may catch your interest.

Wrangler Rubicon 392 Low Down Concept

Let’s kick off covering this year’s Easter Jeep Safari with the biggest tires and the biggest engine. The Jeep Wrangler Low Down concept throws back to the “Lower 40” concept that debuted 15 long years ago. Back in 2009, the team responsible for the concepts fit a massive pair of 40s to a two-door JK with a chopped roof and a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under the hood. This time, the JL-based Low Down concept doesn’t have as much of a dune buggy look to it, but it still has huge 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler 42-by-14.5/R20 mud-terrain tires wrapped around custom 20-inch beadlock wheels. Since it’s based on the Wrangler Rubicon 392, it also gets the automaker’s larger 6.4-liter V8 chucking out 470 horsepower.

The mods obviously don’t stop there, either. The Low Down gets a set of custom high-clearance carbon fender flares to accommodate the gargantuan rubber, as well as beefed up Dana 60 axles at each end with 5.38 gears (replacing the Rubicon 392’s standard Dana 44s with 4.10 gears). Completing the look is a Poison Apple Red paint job with a bit of white mixed in, as well as red-tinted bikini top and a race-style fuel door.

Inside, the Jeep Wrangler Low Down concept has custom black leather seats with cloth inserts, Rhino-lined floors and a custom radio delete instrument panel. Instead of the actual infotainment system, you get a massive 392 decal on the IP (though you do still get A/C and the rest of the Wrangler 392’s off-road kit, both of which will definitely come in handy in Moab).

Wrangler Willys 4xe Dispatcher Concept

The next EJS concept is also based on Jeep’s immensely popular SUV: this time the plug-in hybrid Willys 4xe. The Dispatcher, as it’s called, is meant to recapture the nostalgia of early post-war Civilian Jeep (CJ) models. To that end, you get 36-inch Super Traxion tires wrapped around 16-by-7-inch “steelie” wheels. While they may look like proper steelies at a glance, the quotes are necessary there because they are, in fact, alloy wheels.

Adding to the classic motif, the Wrangler Willys Dispatcher uses a stubby custom front bumper with an integrated 8274 Warn winch using a Warn Epic Series winch hook, and you get a couple D-rings as well. Instead of a Willys decal on the hood, the font is embossed, giving it a more militaristic vibe. In place of the Trail Rated badge, you get a “Back Dated” badge instead. The Dispatcher further gets Element 115 Green paint, a Jeep Performance Parts bikini top and an onboard air compressor.

Even though the Willys Dispatcher clearly means to invoke the old-school, it does still use the standard 4xe’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and electric motor combining to put out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque through an 8-speed automatic transmission. This concept does get Dana 50 Advantech axles with 4.70 gears, though.

Unlike the Low Down, the Willys Dispatcher concept does still bring in the Wrangler’s new-for-2024 12.3-cnch infotainment screen rocking a Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The retro texture on the instrument panel is also a nice touch, as is the leather pattern for the seats and center console.

Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

Jeep usually brings at least one showcase for its JPP catalog, and this is it: the Gladiator Rubicon High Top. It’s based on the standard Gladiator Rubicon, complete with a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 putting out 285 horsepower, but it gets a comprehensive set of off-road upgrades. Starting off, the High Top brings in 40-by-13.5/R18 BFGoodrich T/A KO3 tires wrapped around 18-by-9-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. To that, the team also fitted concept flat fender flares, as well as Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gearing, just like the Low Down.

This is the first concept where AEV comes into the mix, by way of its modified front bumper. This concept also gets an integrated Warn winch, Rick Slide Engineering rock rail power steps, a JPP mesh sun bonnet and a Decked truck bed storage system in the back. Again, you get a bit of retro flair here with the two-tone effect, with Ginger Snap metallic paint as the main hue.

Inside, the Gladiator Rubicon High Top is probably the most conventional of the bunch. You get the standard gauge and infotainment layout and switchgear, though this concept does add custom quilted and perforated black Alea leather seats with orange contrast stitching. The JPP logo is embossed on the headrests, while the accessorized theme continues with the JPP pedal kit, all-weather floor mat and door sill guards.

Last but not least, Jeep brought its larger-than-life Grand Wagoneer to this year’s Easter Jeep Safari event.

Grand Wagoneer Vacationeer Concept

The fourth concept takes full advantage of the Grand Wagoneer’s space to create a home-away-from-home vibe. The Vacationeer (get it?) mates the sizable SUV with a 3.0-liter turbocharged Hurricane inline-six putting out 500 horsepower, chunky tires and a large rooftop tent setup.

Right off the bat, if you think this concept looks a bit familiar…you aren’t wrong. In fact, it’s remarkably close to last year’s Grand Wagoneer-based Overland concept, from the bumper setup to the tire package, rooftop tent and interior conifiguration.

Starting off with the wheel and tire package, the Vacationeer brings in 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrains around 18-by-9-inch bead grip 701 Method Racing wheels. To fit the beefier rubber, Jeep fitted it with larger wheel openings and custom bodyside flare extensions. Up top, there’s a custom RedTail Overland Skyloft rooftop tent while the Spearminted paint scheme with a white Rhino-lined roof and faux-woodgrain graphics throw back to the original Wagoneer. Completing the performance upgrades, this concept gets front and rear underbody protection, a Warn winch and three 11-inch TYRI LED lights up top.

The Vacationeer removes the second and third-row seats to create a more spacious camping experience, while also offering an interior pass-through between the rear cabin and the two-person Skyloft. The tan Tupelo leather seats get custom fabric inserts by fashion designer and Wagoneer enthusiast Kiel James Patrick.

Jeep's 2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts Combine Old School Toughness With Incredible Off-Road Capability

2024 Jeep concepts for Easter Jeep Safari

Jeep is back in its favorite place to test out four new Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) by Mopar concepts. It is time for the    58th Annual Easter Jeep Safari and this year’s concepts combine retro looks with new 4x4 capability. This year’s Easter Jeep Safari runs March 23-31, 2024, in Moab, Utah. Once upon a time Jeep only highlighted its traditional Wranglers but over the years, the Safari has grown to include the Grand Cherokees, the Grand Wagoneers , the Gladiators , EV concepts and 4xe versions of several vehicles. All of the Jeeps demonstrate the legendary Jeep off-road 4x4 capabilities.

“Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, is the perfect venue for new Jeep concepts, with more than 20,000 Jeep enthusiasts gathering each year to celebrate the most iconic 4x4 brand in the world,” said Bill Peffer, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “From 4xe electrification to unmatched 392 power, this year’s Jeep 4x4 concepts illustrate how the most capable Wrangler ever appeals to such a wide range of people.”

Real World 4x4 Testing

Jeep has been using the Easter Jeep Safari outside Moab, Utah as a test lab of sorts for more than five decades. Jeep shows off  the concepts that have been carefully planned by designers and off-road enthusiasts. Jeep sees how the concepts perform and are received by the fans and then some of the concepts or performance packages make it into the Jeep lineup. The gathering is hosted by Moab’s Red Rock 4-Wheelers club. It is one of the largest off-roading events in the world.

Four distinctive Jeep brand and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) concept vehicles are making their debuts at this year’s event.

  • The Jeep Wrangler Low Down concept, a tip of the hat to the Lower 40 concept from 2009, features the 392 V-8 engine
  • The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher concept marries the advanced 4xe plug-in hybrid propulsion system with a throwback design theme that honors early post-war civilian Jeep SUVs
  • The Jeep Gladiator-based High Top concept features a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 along with retro styling
  • The Jeep Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer concept looks like a camper van and has the powerful Hurricane Twin Turbo 510

“Our extended Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar team can’t wait to get back to Moab for the 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari,” said Mike Koval Jr, North America senior vice president, Mopar service, parts and customer care. “We look forward to unveiling a new set of concept vehicles that feature our latest custom and factory-tested and factory-backed production parts and accessories that allow us to tackle some of the toughest trails in the world.”

A Deeper Dive into the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concept Vehicles

Jeep Vacationeer Concept

Perhaps the most unusual concept running the trails in Moab this year is the mint-colored Jeep Vacationeer. It is based on the Grand Wagoneer but filled with nostalgia. The Vacationeer has unique bodyside woodgrain graphics that may remind you of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models that were popular from the late 1960s through the early 1990s. However, the Vacationeer carries the latest in off-roading equipment.

The tricked-out Grand Wagoneer Vacationeer has 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires, wrapped around 18-by-9-inch bead grip 701 Method racing wheels which provide a natural 1.5-inch lift for superior off-road performance. Larger wheel openings and custom bodyside flare extensions add to the aggressive look.

Front and rear skid plates provide underbody protection while a front-mounted Warn winch addresses difficult off-road situations.

On the roof of the Vacationeer concept is a custom, carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft – a climate-controlled oasis with sleeping space for two people and windows to soak in the panoramic views.

The second- and third-row seats have been removed to accommodate integration of the Skyloft. A custom weatherproof, pass-thru entrance allows easy access from the interior floor to the Skyloft. A fore/aft sliding door and a small step, which also doubles as a table, makes it easier to enter and exit the Skyloft.

The Jeep Vacationeer concept is powered by the 3.0-liter Hurricane Twin Turbo 510 engine, delivering 510 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The powerful Hurricane engine provides premium performance while also delivering improved fuel economy versus many competitors’ naturally aspirated V-8 and boosted six-cylinder engines.

Jeep Low Down Concept

The new Low Down concept pays homage to the Lower 40 concept that debuted 15 years ago. This new Jeep Wrangler concept uses massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler 42x14.5R20 mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch beadlock wheels under its custom high-clearance carbon fender flares. The stock Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension remains intact, but Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears replace the standard Dana 44 axles with 4:10 gears. Between the diameter of the tires and the shortening of the front and rear bumpers, the Low Down’s center of gravity remains low, while the ground clearance, breakover, and approach and departure angles all get dramatic increases.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher Concept

A mix of where the Jeep brand’s been and where it’s going, the Jeep Willys Dispatcher is a Wrangler 4xe-based concept that invokes the nostalgia of the early post-war civilian Jeep, with its rugged, utilitarian looks, juxtaposed with the electrified off-road capability of the modern, technologically advanced 4xe propulsion system.

The Willys Dispatcher is powered by the award-winning 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid 4xe propulsion system that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic. Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles with 4.70 gears effortlessly transfer all the power and torque to the Super Traxion tires.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept reflects the drive of the JPP design and engineering teams from Mopar to push the performance boundaries of the world’s most off-road capable midsize truck even further for the annual trek to Moab.

The Ginger Snap metallic exterior with retro-inspired two-tone graphics is designed to grab attention. The Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept rides high on massive new 40x13.5R18 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires mounted on 18-by-9-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels.

We’ll take a deeper look at the four Easter Jeep Safari concepts tomorrow.

Jeep honors past with 2024 Easter Jeep Safari concepts

Joel Feder

As the Easter Jeep Safari kicks off for the 58th year, the off-road automaker continues its tradition of creating concepts for enthusiasts to drool over.

On Monday, Jeep unveiled four concepts for the 2024 event, including two modified Wranglers, one Gladiator, and a Grand Wagoneer. Each concept gives a strong nod to the past in various ways while putting a focus on today’s consumer trends. They’ll be on display and roam the 39 trails at the event, which takes place in Moab, Utah, from March 23-31.

Here’s a breakdown of each of the concepts.

This retro off-roader celebrates Jeep’s Willys roots with a touch of post-WWII Americana. The basis is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe plug-in hybrid, but it’s a far stretch from the electrified SUV consumers buy off dealer lots.

Underneath, the axles have been swapped for beefy Dana 50s at both ends with 4.70 gears. Those axles bolt to custom 16-inch vintage-looking steel wheels painted bright white. The Jeep team wrapped those wheels in 36-inch Super Traxion tires that are tall, narrow, and knobby. A 2.0-inch lift provides more ground clearance.

To complete the vintage exterior look, the hood has Willys stamped into its sides like the early military Jeeps. Both bumpers have been replaced with custom steel units with cut-off ends. Those bumpers both feature what’s known as “helicopter hooks,’ which WWII helicopters would hook to haul Jeeps through the air. A Warn 8274 Classic winch sits up front should things get a bit sketchy when off-roading.

The exterior is finished with Element 115 green paint contrasted by a gloss black windshield surround and roll bars. Inside, Jeep retrimmed the seats with distressed leather and contrasting houndstooth inserts. The trim on the dashboard matches with houndstooth cloth. For a more military-like look, the headrests were removed and the carpeting was replaced by a Jeep Performance Parts vinyl floor covering.

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep said the Low Down concept marks a celebration of the V-8 engine. It mixes vintage race-inspired design with capability.

The Low Down is about speed, noise, and capability. To that end, it’s based on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter V-8.

Jeep beefed up the concept’s running gear with Dana 60 axles front and rear with 5.38 gears. The suspension remains stock, but the entire package rides high thanks to BFGoodrich Krawler 42-inch tires mounted on 20-inch brass beadlock-capable wheels. Between the massive tires and stubby bumpers, the approach and departure angle are nearly “nothing,” according to the Jeep team.

The exterior is meant to evoke “race car vibes,” the Jeep team said, with Candy Apple Red paint, custom high-clearance flat-top carbon-fiber fender flares, no rear door handles, and custom carbon-fiber hood with a see-through power dome featuring eight holes drilled into it for a view of the motor.

The interior’s covered by a custom translucent red bikini top and the floor’s been coated in Rhino Liner. Jeep stripped out the Wrangler’s touchscreen for a more focused interior. “The exhaust has two settings, loud and obnoxious, which is all the entertainment you need,” the Jeep team said. The radio has been deleted because “the motor’s the entertainment.”

Jeep High Top concept

Aiming for attainable performance, the Jeep High Top concept starts life as a Gladiator Rubicon and grabs from the Jeep Performance Parts bin.

In the name of enhanced capability, the Jeep team swapped out the axles for Dana 60s with 5.38 gearing. The truck rides on AccuAir air suspension that can be adjusted on the fly. Massive BFGoodrich 40-inch K03 all-terrain tires wrap black silver-lipped 18-inch Grenade Crawl beadlock-capable wheels. To clear those tires, Jeep Performance Parts flat fender flares have been added, which marks the first time the team has put these on a Gladiator. Fans will note these flares have been used on Wranglers in the past.

The stock 3.6-liter V-6 sits under the hood and it’s hooked to the Gladiator’s 8-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior reaches for a 1970s and ’80s J10 look with a black and Ginger Snap paint scheme. Aficionados will note a similar paint color originally dubbed Ginger Poly or Golden Ginger existed on the J10 back in the day. The retro two-tone graphics play off a black Jeep Performance Parts sun-bonnet top.

An AEV RX front bumper was modified with a low hoop so it wouldn’t impact the front camera’s viewing angle. Rock Slide Engineering rock rails protect the truck’s side rails and double as power assist steps for shorter occupants.

Inside, custom seats feature quilted leather from Alea Leather and the Jeep Performance Parts accessory rail sits atop the dash. This allows GoPros, iPads, and other electronics to be mounted on the dash easily for the day’s adventure. The bed sports a Decked storage system for trail gear, and it can be locked.

Jeep Vacationeer concept

Jeep Vacationeer concept

Jeep is finally ready to give the people what they want: wood trim on the side of a Wagoneer. Well, some people.

Based on the Grand Wagoneer Series III , the Vacationeer honors the nameplate’s heritage while aiming for fans’ nostalgia heart strings.

The massive Wagoneer concept receives a 1.5-inch lift and rides on white 18-inch 701 Method Racing wheels. Jeep wraps the wheels in 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires, but for the rubber to clear custom body-colored fender flares were installed after opening the wheel wells a bit. Custom front and rear skid plates, a revised front fascia with LED off-road lights, and a Warn winch up front complete the exterior changes.

Spearminted paint contrasts with a white protective coating of Rhino liner covers the roof. A custom rack sits atop the SUV with auxiliary lighting and a RedTail Skyloft roof tent. The key design bit is the wood grain stripe that adorns the sides of the Vacationeer concept. It’s a decal inspired by the woodgrain paneling on the ’60s and ’70s Wagoneers, not the full body panels from the ’80s. The decal is textured to feel like wood.

Inside, Tupelo leather seats feature inserts designed by New England’s clothing magnet Kiel James Patrick. Those inserts feature Easter eggs with little TJs, CJs, and JTs hidden within the plaid design. The second- and third-row seats and second-row sunroof were removed. That leaves easy access to the roof-top tent from within the Vacationeer. The Jeep team Rhino-lined the floors to make cleanup easier. Jeep even put a vintage luggage set inside the Vacationeer concept for that old-school feeling.

See Photos Of The 2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts

  • Jeep unveils four new concept vehicles for 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, catering to all off-road enthusiasts with different powertrains.
  • The Low Down concept pays homage to the Wrangler Rubicon 392 with a custom overhaul and 475-hp Hemi V8 engine.
  • The Dispatcher features a 375-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain with a retro look and luxurious interior, blending history with modernity.

For this year's 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep and Mopar-led Jeep Performance Parts introduce four new concepts vehicles . With powertrains ranging from the beloved 392 Hemi V8 to the 4xe hybrid, there are concepts here that appeal to every kind of off-road enthusiast.

HotCars' own Editor-At-Large Chris Tonn was on hand for the initial press reveal and had this to say: "[The] designers and engineers try and get to events like the Easter Jeep Safari to see what people are using out on the trails - both for function and for style. Things that have trickled down from existing users have made their ways into Easter Jeep Safari concepts and then eventually into production vehicles."

2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Final Edition Goes Out With A Hemi-Powered Bang

Jeep low down.

For all those out there lamenting the gradual demise of the Hemi V8, Jeep has some good news for you in the form of the Jeep Wrangler-based Low Down concept. While Jeep is sadly killing off the short-lived V8 Wrangler Rubicon 392 this year, this off-road Mopar is paying homage by giving the model a custom overhaul while still retaining its 475-hp 6.4-liter naturally aspirated Hemi V8 under the hood.

Jeep Low Down Concept Key Features

  • 475 hp 6.4-liter naturally aspirated Hemi V8
  • Poison Apple Red paint and white decals
  • Custom bodywork and carbon hood with power dome
  • 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires and 20-inch beadlock wheels

Aside from the eye-catching red paint, the most notable feature of the Low Down concept is the frankly enormous 20-inch gold beadlock wheels wrapped in gigantic 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain off-road tires . To get everything to fit, the Jeep also has custom high-clearance fenders and shorter overhangs front and rear while retaining the stock Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension. Here are Chris' impressions from attending the Low Down concept's reveal:

"The red 392 Wrangler is inspired by race cars, of all things — they had pictures of vintage Ferraris and Lancias on screen. They put 40-inch tires on a Rubicon without lifting it, so it looks lower and more hunkered down."

Meanwhile, the standard Dana 44 axles with 4:10 gears have been replaced by Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears. Jeep claims all these changes allow for a significant increase in approach and departure angles with higher ground clearance while retaining a low center of gravity. The interior has also seen some changes, with a simplified dash removing the infotainment screens and the addition of custom black leather and cloth seats.

The 10 Most Reliable Jeeps On The Used Market

Jeep willys dispatcher.

The second of the Wrangler-based concepts is a minty green Jeep dubbed the Dispatcher. The Dispatcher features the 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain , producing 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles. Here's Chris's take:

"They made a note that the mail delivery Jeep was once called a Dispatcher, but unlike that old one this does indeed have 4WD. Willys embossed logo on the hood - a glimpse of postwar Americana. History meets the future. They put flat fenders on there, and a houndstooth-type material on the seats."

On the outside, the Dispatcher has a custom old-school front bumper and ‘WILLYS’ lettering embossed on the side of the hood, paying homage to the early flat-fender Jeeps . A Warn Epic Series winch continues the more utilitarian theme. The wheels are also appropriately retro, with the Dispatcher sitting on a set of cream 16-by-7.0-inch alloy “steelies” wrapped in Super Traxion 36-inch tires. Meanwhile, custom Element 115 Green paint finishes off the old-school aesthetic.

The inside is also a throwback, albeit with a far more luxurious interior feel than any Jeep of yesteryear. The distressed saddle brown leather and houndstooth cloth seats make do without a headrest, which is said to invoke a more laid-back, vintage feel.

Jeep Wrangler Upgrades: Top 12 Mods For Beginners

Jeep gladiator rubicon high top.

Moving up in size, the next concept we’re looking at is the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept, built by Jeep Performance Parts to showcase their extensive customer catalog. Under the hood is slightly more underwhelming, with the High Top housing the more pedestrian 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. However, the 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires and 18-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels make far more of a statement.

The High Top also rides tall on AccuAir adjustable air suspension , with Concept JPP flat fender flares all around, providing optimal ground clearance. The exterior also features an American Expedition Vehicles front bumper with a Warn winch sitting below a custom protective hoop.

The Ginger Snap metallic paint adorns the body, along with a two-tone black livery - a color theme that continues on the inside with the custom two-tone leather seats. The High Top also features a decked truck bed storage system and rock-slider rocker panels with power-retractable steps.

What To Expect When You Daily-Drive A Jeep Wrangler

Jeep vacationeer.

Last but not least we’re moving away from the more classic style of Jeep and looking at the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer SUV. However, in an interesting twist, the second and third rows of seats are now gone in favor of an open space, which leads to the custom, carbon-fiber RedTail Overland SkyLoft tent box sitting on top of the roof .

The SkyLoft has space for two to sleep, and Jeep says it’s even climate-controlled, likely thanks to the integrated solar panels. Aside from the seat delete, the interior itself has also received a massive retro-inspired overhaul, with wood-effect paneling throughout. Chris told us his observations of the Vacationeer's interior:

"The woodgrain has a 3-D texture to it to make it look/feel like actual wood. The plaid inserts within the seats have a bunch of Jeep easter eggs within and they look properly vintage in my estimation."

As for the powertrain, the Vacationeer has the much-talked-about turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six Hurricane engine , which is also set to feature in the next-generation Dodge Charger muscle car. It seems as though Jeep and JJP have brought out all the stops this year, and we’re certain the 20,000-strong Jeep community will love what they see when these concepts turn up at Easter Jeep Safari 2024.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We just went off-roading in Jeep’s latest concept vehicles in Moab. Pinch us, as it feels like a dream to actually get behind the wheel of such iconic next-generation hand-built custom vehicles at the world’s most well-known Jeep gathering, Easter Jeep Safari.

While Jeep didn’t go as wild with its Easter Jeep Safari (EJS) concepts as it has in years past , it did focus on products and brand directions that are actually coming to market very soon. You will see an all-electric Jeep Wrangler at a dealership in the next few years, you’ll see a 20th-anniversary special-edition Wrangler next year, and you’ll see some really trick new parts available through Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) later this year.

“Easter Jeep Safari is the perfect opportunity for the Jeep brand to push the limits of four-wheel-drive development and, most importantly, to stay connected with our customers,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand North America.

Mark Allen, Jeep’s head of design, told us that not only are the EJS Safari Concepts great marketing tools, but also that bringing them to Moab each year allows him to teach his designers how to drive off-road properly.

This allows him to trend spot and directly hear from Jeep consumers — something he calls “live research” — and get honest reactions to concept parts and designs that might make it into future products.

2022 EJS Jeep Concepts Driven

Jeep showed off seven all-new concept builds at EJS this year, and let us climb behind the wheel of each of them on trail in Moab. Sure the terrain was pretty mild, but we assure you that every one of these concept vehicles is fully capable off road and was driven without issue by a wide range of journalists.

Huge shoutout to Jeep for continuing to keep its eyes and ears on its enthusiast customers and bringing to market the products we want.

Here are our hands-on thoughts about the 2022 EJS Jeep concept vehicles after a great experience in Moab driving every one of them.

Most Anticipated: Magneto 2 Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: Axial Flux electric motor with 70 kW/h battery pack (4 lithium-ion packs)
  • Performance: 625 hp, 850 lb.-ft. of torque, 0-60 in 2 seconds
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 3-in. lift, 20-in. wheels, 40-in. tires
  • Key features: 6-speed manual modified Hellcat T6060 Tranzilla transmission, 12-in. extended wheelbase to 2-door Wrangler, Dynatrac 60 up front and 80 in rear, carbon fenders/hood/B-pillar

The all-electric Magneto 2 was far and away the most sought-after to drive and the concept that Jeep was most proud of. It is an open engineering testbed that shows us that Jeep can make a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) that is true to the off-road-focused DNA of the brand.

Climbing into this machine takes effort, as it’s rolling on 40-inch tires. There is plenty of room to easily get in though, as the wheelbase has been stretched 12 inches, giving it LJ Wrangler Unlimited proportions.

Behind the wheel, it just feels special, especially so because it has a third pedal and a six-speed shifter. It’s near-silent, besides some electrical noises from under the hood. And once it clicked into gear and rolling, all you really hear is the big tires rolling across the terrain.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The manual transmission works just like any other, but isn’t needed to get going and will never stall the vehicle. Last year, Magneto had 285 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and this year, Magneto 2 has 625 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. With these massive power upgrades this year, it equates to the need for a built Tranzilla transmission and burly built axles at each end.

With that power and equipment to put it down, Magneto 2 is said to be able to do 0-60 mph in just 2 seconds. Sadly, Jeep did not let us test this claim. We can say that power was never lacking when we crawled this Jeep over ledges or gave it a bit of skinny pedal on the flats.

While you get three pedals in this Jeep, it offers one-pedal drive-through regenerative braking. Select an appropriate gear for the terrain and speed you want to go, and the accelerator pedal does the rest.

Magneto 2 feels super open to the world and ready for adventure. The blue-tinted sky panel in the custom bikini top projects a blue hue into the cabin when the sun is overhead, letting you know you’re in no ordinary Jeep.

Instead of a winch, there are low-profile lightweight bumpers at both ends of the vehicle, for a trim look and increased approach and departure angles. Aggressively styled carbon fender flares complement the carbon B-pillar, and hood. The hood also has a cool blue-tinted transparent window that gives you a view of the electric power unit underneath.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The real question is if the all-electric Jeep, which is sure to hit the market in the next few years, will be based on the tried-and-true super-off-road-capable Wrangler or a custom EV chassis that allows for better packaging and utilizes Wrangler off-road componentry.

After talking to a wide range of people at Jeep, my best guess is that they will have the next-generation Wrangler accommodate a wide range of ICE and EV powertrains.

Surprise Favorite: Bob Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: 3.0L Eco-Diesel V-6
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 3-in. lift, 20-in. beadlock wheels, 40-in. tires
  • Key features: Bobbed 12 in., doors and B-pillars removed, custom hardtop/soft-top combo, carbon hood and fenders, AEV front bumper

Our surprise favorite of the 2022 EJS Jeep Concepts was Bob. The name, of course, comes from the rear overhang reduction, known as “bobbing.”

Basically, the frame rails and body/bed are cut down behind the rear axle, in order to optimize departure angle for extreme off-road adventures. Jeep took a full 12 inches off the rear of the Bob Concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Bob started life as a diesel Jeep Gladiator Rubicon before being trimmed and tweaked. The doors and B-pillars are permanently removed, and the hood and fenders have been replaced with lightweight carbon versions. Even the hardtop roof has been modified to let light through from the canvas top that is stretched over it.

Bob felt like it could tackle any off-road obstacle you put in its path with ease. The super-torquey Eco-Diesel powers massive 40-inch tires that roll on burly Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 axles suspended with some of the latest and greatest shocks from King. Strong, capable, and easy are the words we’d use to describe driving off-road in the Bob Concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

While the pumpkin orange isn’t our favorite shade of orange, the overall look of the entire vehicle is super-classy and custom. Besides the combo of gloss and matte paint on the outside, the inside has also been bed-lined for durability and the seats tweaked for a sporty look to match the exterior.

Urban Assault Winner: Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain:  2.0L turbo 4-cylinder and 2 electric motors w/400-volt battery pack
  • Performance:  56 MPGe, 25 mi. of all-electric range
  • Lift/wheels/tires: Stock Quadra-Lift air suspension, 20-in. wheels, 33-in. M/T tires

Hitting dealer lots very soon, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe (PHEV) is sure to be a big seller. It offers 25 miles of all-electric range as well as off-road goodies like a front sway-bar disconnect, rock rails, and adjustable-height air ride suspension. Jeep even tackled the Rubicon trail with the production version of this vehicle, in full electric mode.

For the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept, Jeep brought us some big aesthetic upgrades and bigger tires. Besides the blue color scheme and graphics package, the roof is Rhino-lined black, and custom 3D-printed roof racks with integrated tie-downs were installed.

While the roof rack mounts look super cool, we weren’t a big fan of the Rhino lining. Instead of looking tough, it cheapened the otherwise upscale look of the concept.

Inside the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe concept is super sharp-looking saddle leather upholstery with ‘Rodney’ houndstooth cloth inserts. Combined with blue contrast stitching and the signature 4xe Trailhawk badging, the inside of this concept vehicle is just a really nice and luxurious place to be.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Wedged under this concept are 33-inch mud-terrain tires without any suspension modifications, which took some considerable fender trimming and widened fender flares. Those meaty tires are wrapped on 20-inch wheels.

While big wheels and tiny tire sidewalls are not optimal for off-road adventures, they do look really good! The setup also worked better than we would have expected off-road.

Coming Soon: Rubicon 20th Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: 6.4L V-8
  • Lift/wheels/tires: JPP 2-in. lift, 17-in. wheels, 37-in. M/T tires
  • Key features: Sky One-Touch powertop, custom half doors, winch, swing gate air compressor

Take a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and add some nice 20th-anniversary touches and you get the 20th Concept. The Rubicon was born in 2003 as a two-door Wrangler, so we’ll see its 20th anniversary next year.

After talking with the good people at Jeep, we’re pretty positive we’ll see a special-edition 20th-anniversary Rubicon on the market next year — and it will likely have many of the touches seen on this concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The Rubicon 20th Concept has a Granite Crystal exterior wrap and gold accents, with an anniversary hood decal, and American flag fender decals. It also features custom half doors and a Sky One-Touch powertop with removable side panels.

Off-road goodies include 17-inch wheels wrapped in 37-inch mud-terrain tires, steel bumpers, a Warn winch , steel skid plates, and a soon-to-be-released Mopar swing gate air compressor.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 just puts a massive smile across your face, on and off road. Add in some refined looks, an open-air top, and big tires, and you’ve got a winning package.

Heritage: ’41 Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: 4xe PHEV w/2.0L turbocharged I-4
  • Performance: 49 MPGe and up to 21 mi. all-electric range
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 2-in. JPP lift, 17-in. Fifteen52 wheels, 35-in. M/T tires
  • Key features: Army color scheme, half doors, soft top, winch, retro shifter

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Jeep always brings out at least one concept to EJS that harkens back to its past. Usually, that’s an old Jeep with modern components and custom touches. But this year, they went the route of taking a new Wrangler Willys 4xe and giving it some throwback touches.

“Since 1941” is displayed somewhere on all modern Jeep vehicles, and recognizes Jeep’s military heritage. The idea behind the ’41 Concept is to honor the original Willys MB that served the U.S. Army for many years.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The entire ’41 Concept is done up in matte olive D.R.A.B. with sand and digital camo canvas interior. Even the Rhino-lined floor, instrument panel inserts, and gauge cluster are finished in olive D.R.A.B. Willys retro graphics and stenciled graphics help connect the Jeep with its heritage. The ’41 Concept also gets half doors, a tan soft top, and a winch.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We particularly loved the retro shifter and customized 3D-printed shifter caps, versions of which are found on many of this year’s concepts. The ’41 Concept drove like a well-sorted Wrangler 4xe, but with some no-frills, get-the-job-done Army attitude.

Cool Parts: Birdcage Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain:  4xe PHEV w/2.0L turbocharged I-4
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 2-in. JPP lift, 17-in. JPP beadlock wheels, 37-in. M/T tires
  • Key features: Custom lighting, DRL fenders, Fox shocks, custom sliders, custom front bumper, Add-A-Trunk, swing gate air compressor

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

You might not think that brown and blue are colors that would go together well (we didn’t), but they really work well on the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) Birdcage concept. Based on a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, this concept is all about showing off some cool new accessories, and a few prototype parts, from JPP. It is also all about open-air off-road adventures, having no windshield or roof.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Big 37-inch tires fit under new custom flat-fender flares and wheel liners. The fender flares feature the first 50-state-legal — for both daytime running lights (DRL) and tire coverage requirements — integral removable DRL covers.

The idea is that they provide more tire clearance when removed for extreme off road, but are safer and road-legal on the highway. Even the taillights have been custom-fitted to meet federal lighting requirements for a 37-inch tire fitment, while still being trail-worthy with aluminum taillamp guards.

Fox shocks provided a smooth ride, while a custom rock-slider skid plate integrated into the front end and custom side rock sliders protected the Jeep on the trail. For carrying big gear, a heavy-duty (600-pound capacity) Rhino-Rack cargo basket is mounted atop the roll cage.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We also really dug the out-now JPP swing-gate flip-down table, the soon-to-market integrated swing-gate air compressor system, and the Jeep tool roll. Both of the future accessories looked like high-quality, well-thought-out products that any Jeep user would value when out on the trail.

The concept “Add-A-Trunk” decklid panel was an interesting possible future JPP part as well. It flips up on gas struts, provides secure storage on top, and covers up gear in the rear cargo area.

Buy Now: D-Coder Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: V-6
  • Key features: All the JPP & Mopar parts and QR codes to buy them now

Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) took a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and threw more than 35 JPP and Mopar accessories at it. The gloss black Jeep has every accessory in a contrasting Maraschino Red color, which are each labeled with a QR code.

Basically, the D-Coder Concept is a rolling catalog, where customers can buy parts online directly from their phones by scanning the QR codes on the vehicle.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

You could pretty easily buy and have built at the dealership this Jeep pickup yourself today, minus having all the red accessories, without some extra effort.

We particularly liked the Thule basket rack over the truck bed, as it would allow for more outdoor adventure toys on your off-road adventures. The tube doors are also tons of good fun on the trail, but sadly not all that practical for daily Jeep adventures.

DRIVEN: Our Favorite Concepts from Easter Jeep Safari 2023

We drove all seven rigs, but walked away really loving four of them.

Jeep Magneto 3.0 front

  • Jeep brought seven new concepts to this year's Easter Jeep Safari drive in Moab, Utah.
  • The concepts utilize both custom-manufactured parts and off-the-shelf bits.
  • We drove all of them and whittled down our list of favorites.

Every year tens of thousands of people descend upon the unassuming town of Moab, Utah, for a wheeling meetup like no other. Easter Jeep Safari is the quintessential Jeep gathering where old faithful models from World War II mingle with the latest and greatest that Jeep and the aftermarket can cobble together.

However, it’s the concepts that the company rolls out that really garner attention. For 2023, Jeep showed off seven ideas that span the gamut from fully electric to stonking V8 power; from high-dollar overlanding to a nostalgia cocktail restomod. After driving all of them, these were our favorites.

Am I Ready for an EV?

  • EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
  • If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
  • Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.

Jeep Scrambler 392 Concept profile

Scrambler 392

What happens when you combine the Jeep Wrangler 392 with its 6.4-liter V8 powertrain and a tiny bit of a Jeep Gladiator pickup truck? You get the Jeep Scrambler 392 Concept. Designers started with a four-door 392 but turned it into a two-door, then added the last 10 inches or so of a Gladiator to turn it into a truck, complete with a functioning tailgate.

The team included massive 40-inch Maxxis MT tires, but also added lightness by swapping out the stock hood, fenders and rear quarter panels for replicas made out of carbon fiber. The crowning glory here are the Bilstein shocks with AccuAir suspension that can give the Scrambler 392 a lift of up to 5.5 inches with the push of a button.

With tires this big, the Scrambler can pretty much handle any hole or bump you throw at it, but with its low four-wheel-drive range it’s easy to make short work of rocky hill climbs. However, with 470 ponies and an equal amount of torque on tap, it’s easy for newbies to drive too fast. Remember, when rock crawling your mantra should be, “As slow as possible, and as fast as necessary.”

Smoother sections are pretty fun thanks to the responsive throttle, but there is a caveat here. Remember that added clearance doesn’t necessarily translate into added wheel travel. You need long-travel shocks to do that, so I wouldn’t consider the Scrambler a whoop-eater. It would likely shred on a dry lake bed, though!

1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept front

1978 Cherokee 4xe

My nostalgia nodules are in full effect as soon as I touch the door handle of the 1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept. Instead of the beefy, plastic handle of a modern vehicle, I grab a thin metal handle and push a button with my thumb. The door opens with a creak and closes with a hollow slam. These are the doors of my childhood.

Jeep designers bought the 1978 Cherokee SJ on Craigslist and threw the body on top of a 2022 Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. Wheelwells are filled out by 37-inch BFGoodrich MT tires and there are all kinds of thoughtful '70s-inspired touches. The yellow paint with orange and red accents is on point, as are the slotted mag wheels and 4xe badging in 1970s-era font.

Driving this one is a bit of a trip thanks to the ridiculously large hood. Granted, our quick drive route is not difficult, but I would likely want a spotter to help me up any advanced obstacles, as my front wheels feel like they are all the way in Colorado.

The dash is all modern Wrangler, and honestly, it feels wrong to have such a thick steering wheel in my hands. I’m aching for one of those skinny ones with the finger indents around it. However, the 8-track installed where the window controls are typically located is choice (albeit nonfunctional). The Cherokee still has its roll-up windows, but they are permanently fixed in the down position as the dash is too bulky to allow the handles to move.

Still, the rig brings out a smile on my face. It’s not the quickest of the lot, nor does it have a fancy suspension or a massive lift. It’s just cool.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept front

Grand Wagoneer Overland

To prove Jeep can hang with the bougie crowd, the company showed off the Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept. The most surprising thing here is how good the beast looks with 35-inch BFGoodrich MT tires. Seriously, I’d wheel the stuffing out of this thing with those shoes!

Aside from the requisite winch and lights, this concept is graced by a Redtail Overland Skyloft rooftop tent that can retail for up to $30,000. Yes, that’s correct. Thirty Gs for a tent. But hey, if you want a hard-sided, solar-powered carbon-fiber rooftop tent with charging ports, dual-pane windows, a heater and an air conditioner with easy setup and breakdown, you’re going to pay.

The tent is accessed through a side ladder or from the interior, where Jeep removed the second and third rows, created a trapdoor out of the sunroof opening, and fashioned a living room of sorts, complete with beanbags, throw pillows and a plush rug. Step on a side table to get through the roof and into the loft area.

I love the plaid wool flannel on the front seats, and before I start off, I crank up the heat and turn on the massage feature. The Grand Wagoneer is a bit easier to drive since its four-wheel-drive system isn’t quite as aggressive as the Wrangler's. Here the shift from first to second is smooth whereas in the Wrangler it can be a bit abrupt.

However, the decreased approach and breakover angles mean I have to pick my line carefully. A few folks scrape the front skid plate a bit, although I don’t have a problem. The tent weighs around 300 pounds and I hardly feel it up there when the Wagoneer gets a little tippy on a rock climb. Under the hood is Jeep’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane 510 engine with — you guessed it — 510 horsepower.

Jeep Magneto 3.0 Concept rear

Wrangler Magneto 3.0

But if I have to pick a favorite, it’s the all-electric Magneto 3.0. This is the third and final year for the Magneto but it’s got more power and range than its previous iterations. Based on a 2020 two-door Wrangler Rubicon chassis, the Magneto gets a raked windshield, wider door openings, 40-inch tires and a six-speed manual transmission.

I have to think of the transmission as a speed limiter in order to understand it, since the Magneto is capable of starting in any gear. For slow-speed rock crawling, first or second gear is appropriate. For faster desert running, third or fourth would allow for enough speed, while highway driving should be done in the top two gears.

To drive it I have to push in the clutch and put the Magneto in gear. I chose third gear at first. Then, instead of slipping the clutch like I would on my own ICE vehicle, I just let the clutch out fully and then hit the throttle. It’s tough to get used to, but once I do, it’s pretty dope. I can row through the gears if I want, essentially dumping the clutch on every upshift, but it’s not necessary.

When I get to the steep hill climb, I put it in first gear, again to obey the “as slow as possible, as fast as necessary” rule, and the Magneto climbs right up. I mean, it would be hard not to with 650 horsepower and 900 lb-ft of torque, am I right?

However, like the Scrambler 392 concept, the Magneto doesn’t have a vast amount of wheel travel, so it’s tough to use all the power out here in the rocks and whoops. To exploit what’s coming out of the single electric motor I would definitely need a dry lake bed or airport runway.

Now that’s an idea. U-Drag between the Magneto 3.0 and Scrambler 392, anyone?

Edmunds says

All of the concepts that Jeep brought to the Easter Jeep Safari drive were great in their own way. But these stood out from the rest.

What I Discovered at My First Easter Jeep Safari in Moab

Among soaring slabs of sandstone, thousands of Jeep fans converge and the brand tests out its newest concepts.

Culture photo

KristinVShaw

If you stand on Main Street in Moab in the middle of April, someone driving a Jeep product will pass by approximately every 2.1 seconds. Moab is alive with Jeep juju, so it must be time for the annual Easter Jeep Safari , a week-long celebration of all things off-road. Thousands of people who are members of the church of slick rock crawl all over the routes that skirt around Arches National Park and obstacles with colorful names like Hell's Revenge and Poison Spider. Every turn is magnificently carved by nature from cross-stratified Navajo sandstone.

This is my first Easter Jeep Safari , and I’m checking it off my mental bucket list with glee. After two flights broken up by a four-hour layover in Denver, I arrive at the Moab airport. It’s a tiny place with one gate in a compact terminal; the ground crew dumps all the luggage in one semi-flat outdoor bin after each flight. The airport is less than 20 minutes from downtown Moab, and I hop into a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and fire up the V8 to get from there to the Hoodoo Moab Hotel.

Culture photo

Jeep’s “home away from home” is in the southeast quadrant of Utah, where red sandstone throws majestic shadows over the desert. The brand is very much at home here, and a substantial team flies in from Detroit to test out the newest crop of Jeep concepts. Easter Jeep Safari started out as a one-day affair in 1967, when the Moab Chamber of Commerce organized the event to attract tourists. Now, Jeep (and Jeepers) descends on Moab in force to drive on some of the toughest terrain Utah has to offer for off-roaders. While there, Jeep execs, product representatives, and engineers meet with customers who don’t pull any punches about what they like and don’t like about the brand’s vehicles.

Is this Heaven?

It is Holy Week, which means more than one thing to the people here. Red Rock 4 Wheelers , the club that leads the Easter Jeep Safari, calls Moab the “Mecca of four-wheeling” and there is the obvious reference to Easter Sunday, which marks the end of the event. Plus, during the Easter Jeep Safari there are a number of commandments to follow to keep the area as pristine as possible for generations to come.

Culture photo

“Don’t bust the crust!” is one of those directives, which means that you should avoid stepping on the cryptobiotic soil that serves as the desert’s delicate crust. Crypto, meaning ‘hidden’ plus biota, which means ‘life’ forms the base of the word that describes a microcosm of green-blue algae, lichen, moss, fungi, and other important life-giving substances.

A representative from the Bureau of Land Management gives us a stern talking-to about the flora and fauna of Moab and keeps a sharp eye on where the vehicles are putting their wheels. As I arrive in the top-of-the-food-chain Rubicon 392 in Sarge Green, she watches my feet when I dismount to make sure I’m not violating the ground beneath me. Throughout the week, Jeep is conscientious about how drivers treat the public land because it's a unique, special place for testing and visibility.

Staying on the marked trails is also expected, and refraining from tailgating is a smart idea. Don't be a jerk on the trail, basically.

Jeep Concepts Put to the Test

An array of concept vehicles is splayed out in front of me, including a few I have been eagerly waiting to see in person: the striking red-on-black D-Coder, a chopped Gladiator dubbed the Bob, and the all-electric Magneto 2.0. The first Magneto was on hand at the Easter Jeep Safari last spring , and while it looks very similar this year on the outside, the brand gave the concept a huge power boost. Now it makes 850 pound-feet of peak torque, which is more than three times the output of Magneto 1.0, and a staggering 625 horsepower.

Jeep boss Jim Morrison takes the co-pilot role as I climb into the front seat of the Magneto 2.0; it’s a big hop up into the EV, since it’s rocking 40-inch-tall tires mounted to 20-inch wheels. They’re massive. Morrison coaches me through a quick primer on using the unusual stickshift in the Wrangler concept, and we take off along the rocks. How a manual could possibly work in an electric vehicle requires a fairly detailed explanation, and since Caleb has already done that on The Drive , I don’t need to repeat it all. Check out his post here.

Culture photo

At this juncture, Morrison indicates that rowing your own Magneto won’t be an option for the masses. It’s too expensive to build.

Once I hop out of the Magneto, I'm ready to test out the Bob, named as such for the "bobbed" back end of a Gladiator. Luckily for me, off-road coach and Rebelle Rally champion Nena Barlow is available to drive with me and offer off-roading tips, and we wheel across the trail under the orange glow of the Bob's canvas lid. This is one of my favorites, with its stumpy shape and brightly-colored accessories, and the Bob is a terrific host on the rocks.

Barlow, however, prefers the Industrial Blue Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe . She appreciates the air suspension, sway-bar disconnect, and 20-inch metallic matte wheels wrapped in 33-inch BFG mud-terrain rubber. I like the custom upholstered seats with houndstooth inserts, which chief designer Mark Allen says is modeled after a jacket the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield would have worn.

Of course, I didn't miss a chance to drive the Kaiser Jeep M725 concept, which started out as a 1967 Kaiser Jeep M725 military ambulance. Custom rock rails protect the body and it rides on 20-inch, eight-lug Black Rhino Armory wheels wrapped in 40-inch tires. As soon as I started it up, my face broke into an ear-to-ear grin. Yes, it off-roads, too.

Culture photo

The population of Moab was 5,366 at the 2020 census, and it swells to at least four times that size during the Easter Jeep Safari. If the Chamber of Commerce members who kicked this event off in 1967 could see it now, they'd surely be astonished and delighted that their idea worked so well. Hotels dot the landscape and Jeep tour companies like Nena Barlow's are seeing steady work.

During Easter Jeep Safari, the general mood in town is of excitement and camaraderie; off-roaders exchange tips on routes and parts. Bilstein hosts a site and a number of wrapped vehicles tool around town, advertising the brand. BFGoodrich hosts a garage right on Main Street and it's open to all. You bring the parts and they'll fix just about anything for you, gratis, whether or not your vehicle is riding on any of the BFGoodrich brand tires . They'll even swap out an engine if they have to, one of the mechanics told me. That's pretty dang generous.

As I leave Moab, I stop at the local rocks and fossils shop for a souvenir in the hopes that it will hold me over until my next visit. I already can't wait for 2023.

2021 Easter Jeep Safari Brings 4 Rugged New Concepts to Moab

Four new and three previously seen concepts based on the Gladiator, the Jeepster, and of course the Wrangler will take to the Utah trails on March 27.

easter jeep safari concepts 2021

  • Four new and three previously seen concepts will take to the trials in Utah next weekend for the annual Easter Jeep Safari.
  • New this year are the all-electric Magneto, the classic-inspired Jeepster Beach, the rock-ready Jeep Red Bare Gladiator Rubicon, and the eye-catching Jeep Orange Peelz.

Jeep is rolling into spring with a bevy of concept vehicles for the Easter Jeep Safari . The annual brand celebration will take place in Moab, Utah, starting March 27 and running through April 4. The four new concepts Jeep unveiled for the event this year don't correspond directly to any production models, but there are a few hints about what's on the horizon.

Jeep Wrangler Magneto EV

jeep wrangler magneto bev concept

The all-electric Jeep Magneto, based on the two-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon , was teased earlier this month . Powered by four battery packs with a total of 70.0 kWh, the Magneto has 4x4 capability and power output of 273 pound-feet of torque and 285 horsepower. Unusually for an EV, the Magneto has a six-speed manual transmission. Jeep says the idea would be for the motor to engage in regenerative power collection upon clutch engagement to prevent rev hang in quick-shifting scenarios. Jeep has also decided to spread the four battery packs around the Wrangler body to keep the weight balanced.

Jeep claims the Magneto can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, and you can't miss the Bright White paint with Surf Blue accents on the outside and the Royal Blue and black leather seats inside the open interior. We think the Magneto is likely a hint that a production Wrangler EV could be on its way, perhaps late this year or early in 2022.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Red Bare

jeep red bare gladiator rubicon concept

This Gladiator Rubicon concept focuses more on the low-end power side of the Jeep equation, which has a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission calibrated for low-rpm shifts, and a 91:1 crawl ratio to help keep the Fire Cracker Red exterior paint right side up. The engine produces 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque and it comes with engine stop-start technology as well. The Jeep Red Bare Gladiator Rubicon uses Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles with 4.88 axle ratios, 37-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires, factory steel bumpers with a Warn winch, and a front bumper grille guard.

1968 Jeepster Commando Beach

jeep jeepster beach concept

Instead of looking forward, the Jeepster Beach takes a 1968 Jeepster Commando (C-101), adds in a two-tone paint scheme (Hazy IPA and Zinc Oxide) and throws in a modified 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, about 25 percent more power than the production version of that engine. There's an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 4:1 transfer case to move the concept's 35-inch tires. Inside, there are bucket seats with red leather trim and none of that messy carpet that would just collect sand.

Jeep Wrangler Orange Peelz

jeep orange peelz concept

If you can't take a Jeep chassis on the trail, perhaps the Jeep Orange Peelz will do the open-air trick. Based on a two-door Wrangler, this concept does away with the side and rear windows, and uses prototype JPP half doors and a removable one-piece glass sunroof. There are five-inch, off-road LED lights mounted at the base of the A-pillars and the windshield is made of Corning Gorilla Glass. Under the hood, you'll find a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that produces 285 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Orange Peelz rides on 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires and uses a 2-inch JPP lift kit with FOX shocks.

The concept's name comes from the Orange Peelz exterior color, teamed with contrasting Satin Black beltline graphic and fender badges.

Jeep will also bring three Jeep and Mopar concepts that we saw in 2020 to Moab for the first time: the Jeep Gladiator Farout, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, and the Jeep Gladiator Top Dog concept will all be on location.

TEASED: Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Look Very Special This Year

Here's what we can expect from the Toledo-based brand.

  • Jeep teases Easter Safari builds ahead of reveal
  • Images suggest military-inspired Wrangler and 392-powered desert racer
  • Easter Jeep Safari takes place in Moab, Utah, in the last week of March

Ahead of the 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari later this month, the Toledo-based automaker has teased two new concepts, giving us a glimpse of what we can expect in Moab, Utah, from March 23-31.

The first image showcases what appears to be a Wrangler painted in High Velocity with a black-painted seven-slot grille and trim details. It doesn't look that different from a standard Wrangler, but there are a few clues. The embossed 'Willys' text and font on the side of the hood are reminiscent of the original military Willys Jeep, suggesting that we may see another military-inspired build.

Jeep and the Willys nameplate are closely linked to 20th-century war efforts. US General Dwight D. Eisenhower admitted that victory wouldn't have been possible without the Willys Jeep and its capabilities.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jeep (@jeep)

Could This Be A Homage To The Universal Jeep?

Jeep may want to pay tribute to its roots with a build that will debut at the Easter Jeep Safari. Last year, the automaker debuted seven Easter Safari concepts , including the Jeep '41 Concept, inspired by the original Willys Jeep. Perhaps the automaker will take a different direction with the new concept, but there's also a possibility that it could be something else.

Above the hood, we can see a snippet of an old print advert titled "The Universal Jeep." This could reference the model of the same name (also known as the Jeep Universal) that Willys marketed in the 1950s and 1960s. These included the CJ-3A, CJ-3B, and early versions of the CJ-5. The build teased above could perhaps be a homage to these off-roaders.

The second model, pictured below, teases another build. But if we look at the clues properly, it won't be your average Jeep off-roader.

Hard at work on concepts from Easter Jeep Safari’s past — and looking forward to the future at Easter Jeep Safari® 2024. 💪 Concept vehicle and features shown throughout, not available for purchase. Posted by Jeep on  Thursday, March 7, 2024

A V8-Powered Off-Road Racer Could Be In The Cards

The second image showcases something racier and more aggressive. What appears to be Firecracker Red has been paired with a white racing stripe that flows over the vehicle's hood. On the lower part of said stripe, we can see a blurry '392' motif that suggests it will be V8-powered.

A 470-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi engine is delightful in an off-roader, but we have reason to believe this won't be your average rock crawler.

Flared fenders and prominent fender vents suggest this could be a hardcore rally or Baja build, similar to the crazy Trailcat that was previewed in 2016 . Perhaps Jeep will treat the 392 motor to some performance upgrades, but we will have to wait and see whether that happens. We just know that it will look fantastic.

Jeep has said we can expect "unrivaled heritage, bold color palettes and powerful propulsion suited for any adventure" from this year's batch of creative builds.
