AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jerry Kelly won the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship for the second time in three years Sunday, breaking away with two late birdies to beat defending champion Steve Stricker by two strokes.

Kelly closed with a 2-under 68, taking the outright lead with a 15-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-5 16th and running in a 10-footer on the par-4 17th. He finished at 11-under 269 on Firestone's South Course.

“The first major is awesome, but the second one, even more validation,” Kelly said. “I’m really excited to go back to Sawgrass next March. That was a big piece of the desire in winning this tournament. That’s one of those great things that we have with our majors that we can get to go play at the high point of golf. I’m really excited about that.”

The 55-year-old Kelly won with wife Carol looking on. Last year, she had surgery to remove her right kidney after doctors found a cancerous mass.

“I mean, just the fact that she’s here this week,” Kelly said. “It may not be our normal restaurant-laden place or the hotel that is our favorite on tour, but the golf course is that special and she’s like, `You know what, I want to be there for you, I love that golf course, it’s really cool just to be out there.’”

Kelly also won at Firestone in August 2020 and finished second last year. The Madison, Wisconsin, player has 10 PGA TOUR Champions victories, also winning the Principal Charity Classic last month in Iowa, after winning three times on the PGA TOUR.

“He made the putts when he had to coming down, and vice versa, I didn’t,” Stricker said. "That’s the difference.”

The 55-year-old Stricker, also from Madison, matched Kelly with a closing 68.

“Not really what I had in mind, really,” Stricker said. “I was looking to come out on top of all this.”

Sticker missed a chance for his second major victory of the season after taking the Regions Tradition in May in Alabama.

“He played great and he made the putts when he had to,” Stricker said about Kelly. “He made a nice putt at 13 for birdie and then I basically showed him the line at 16 and he made another great one at 17."

Steve Alker bogeyed the par-4 18th to drop into a tie for third with Ernie Els at 8 under. A three-time winner this season and the Charles Schwab Cup points leader, Alker shot a 69.

“I just didn’t have it today,” Alker said. “I just made too many bogeys over the weekend. That was the difference.”

Els closed with a 68.

Stephen Ames (65) was 6 under with Ken Duke (66), Woody Austin (68) and Alex Cejka (73).

Jerry Kelly punctuates his first senior major victory with a special highlight

1228073553

Jamie Sabau

Jerry Kelly is a man without a poker face who nonetheless took down his challengers with an ace that no one saw coming on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly, his lead slipping away, won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship by virtue of a hole-in-one on the 177-yard 12th hole at the South course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

With a single swing, Kelly’s one-stroke lead became three, then four when playing partner Scott Parel bogeyed the 13th hole. From there it was little more than a formality before Kelly could begin to celebrate his seventh PGA Tour Champions victory and the first major championship of his career.

He beat Parel by two, earning $450,000 and an exemption to the PGA Tour’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass next spring.

“I love that idea, the Players Championship,” Kelly said. “I can’t wait to go back there. And just to have a major out here is pretty huge for me. Never getting one, not even getting that close on the regular tour, it feels great.”

Kelly, 53, is an animated player whose demeanor takes any guess work out of how every shot’s result while it’s in the air. That special highlight on the 12th hole was no exception.

“Come on,” he shouted, easily heard over the absence of a din with no fans permitted on the premises.

Only moments before, Kelly had bogeyed the 11th hole to see his lead cut to one. Then on the next tee, he changed clubs.

“I know the wind switched,” he said. “It was going in and left to right and now it’s in and right to left. I was able to take some off it and cut a little 5-iron instead of a 6 and starting it over the bunker. It made me a little happier.”

Kelly won with a final-round of one-under-par 69 on a familiar course for PGA Tour veterans, and one that over four rounds played up to its major-championship pedigree. His aggregate score was three-under 277 on a course that has hosted three PGA Championships as well as 20 World Golf Championship events.

Parel was the only other player to finish under par (one under) after completing a round of even-par 70.

Parel, who never played the PGA Tour but has won three times on the PGA Tour Champions, began the final round trailing Kelly by a stroke. Parel briefly tied for the lead at the outset and again trailed by one after three holes, when inclement weather caused a two-hour, 15-minute delay.

By then, it basically was only a two-man competition, and it remained tight until Kelly’s tee shot on 12, struck on a perfect line, hitting about eight feet short of the hole and rolling out and into the cup.

Colin Montgomerie, who began the final round tied for second, shot a one-over 71 and tied for third with Miguel Angel Jimenez, who closed with a 69.

Jerry Kelly calls Players Championship exemption for Senior Player winner 'one of the great things we have'

Kelly will make his 25th career start in the 2023 players.

Jerry Kelly had some strong motivation down the stretch on Sunday during the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship: getting back to the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Kelly birdied the 16th and 17th holes at the Firestone Country Club in Akron to beat Steve Stricker by two shots and win the PGA Tour Champions major for the second time in three years. He finished 11-under 269.

A monster putt, a 'perfect call:' 20 years later, Tiger Woods, Gary Koch linked by history

Tiger Woods calls Norman out:  Woods agrees with R&A decision to not invite Greg Norman to 2022 British Open for his involvement with LIV Golf

Kelly earned a spot in the 2023 Players with the victory and will make his 25th career start at the Stadium Course, counting the 2020 tournament that was canceled after the first round because of the pandemic.

He tied for 19th as recently as 2016. Kelly had a memorable run in 2001 until he was overtaken by Tiger Woods.

“The first major is awesome, but the second one, even more validation,” Kelly said after the victory. “I’m really excited to go back to Sawgrass next March. That was a big piece of the desire in winning this tournament. That’s one of those great things that we have with our majors that we can get to go play at the high point of golf. I’m really excited about that.”

Kelly also won with his wife Carol in attendance. She underwent surgery last year to remove a cancerous mass from her right kidney.

“Just the fact that she’s here this week,” Kelly said. “She’s like, 'You know what, I want to be there for you, I love that golf course, it’s really cool just to be out there.’”

Kelly also won at Firestone in August 2020 and finished second last year. He now has 10 PGA Tour Champions titles and his second of the season.

Playing for the fun of it

PGA Tour members play golf for a living but that doesn’t mean there are times when they want to play for fun – even during the week of a tournament.

Fred Funk once rushed from a post-round interview after the 2006 PGA Championship at Medinah to drive to the historic Chicago Golf Club to get in 18 holes, after opening the PGA with a 69.

He has a kindred spirit in Max Homa.

Homa, a four-time Tour winner, shot 71 in the second round of the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club last Friday to make the cut by one shot, then zipped up the coast to play North Berwick, a 190-year old club at the Firth of Forth.

Homa had a chance to play Muirfield earlier in the week with Joe Greiner, his caddie, but canceled because Greiner’s clubs had gotten lost by the airline.

He wasn’t going to miss North Berwick.

“I saw the video years ago. It was of North Berwick and I was like, ‘This is the coolest golf course in the world.’ And all of a sudden it became my favorite I had never played,” Homa said after his 66 in the third round of the Scottish Open. “That’s what made [playing North Berwick] a must, because I’m not having a tee time at North Berwick and Muirfield and saying ‘no’ to both. I got North Berwick out of the way, and hopefully play Muirfield the next time we come by.”

Word spread at North Berwick that a four-time Tour winner was playing a recreational round and members followed his group.

“The people around here I find tremendously nice, and kept doubling back and taking pictures,” he said. “You could tell the golf community around here is tight. It was a cool day. It was definitely one of the best golf experiences I’ve ever had.”

Dynamic duo

If Mel Reid and Leona Maguire play anything close to their form at last year's Solheim Cup, they should be a factor this week in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational in Midland, Mich., the LPGA team event that begins on Wednesday.

Reid, a native of England who lives in Atlantic Beach, and Maguire, from Ireland, went 2-0-1 as partners in the Solheim Cup at Inverness, helping Europe beat the United States 15-13.

Their formula: keep it simple, even down to the team name, which Reid said would probably be "just Best Friends ... because obviously, that's clearly what we are. We did so well at Solheim and she's somebody I really enjoy playing with."

Maguire said they won't over-think the strategy any more than that.

"Not going to over-complicate it," she said. "We didn't at Solheim, so there's really no reason to do it this week, either."

Lewis makes first 2022 start

Jacksonville native Amelia Lewis will make her first start on the LPGA Tour in nearly a year when she plays in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational with Paula Reto of South Africa.

Lewis last played in late July of 2021 at the ISPS Handa World Invitational, her 22nd consecutive start in which she either missed the cut or withdrew. Lewis last played on the weekend at the 2018 Kingsmill Championship, where she tied for 36th.

Jerry Kelly Wins Senior Players Championship for Second Time

  • Author: Associated Press

AKRON, Ohio — Jerry Kelly won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship for the second time in three years Sunday, breaking away with two late birdies to beat defending champion Steve Stricker by two strokes.

Kelly closed with a 2-under 68, taking the outright lead with a 15-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-5 16th and running in a 10-footer on the par-4 17th. He finished at 11-under 269 on Firestone’s South Course.

“He made the putts when he had to coming down, and vice versa, I didn’t,” Stricker said. “That’s the difference.”

The 55-year-old Stricker, also from Madison, matched Kelly with a closing 68.

“Not really what I had in mind, really,” Stricker said. “I was looking to come out on top of all this.”

Jerry Kelly wins Senior Players Championship for second time in three years

AKRON, Ohio — Jerry Kelly won his second Bridgestone Senior Players Championship on the South Course at Firestone Country Club on Sunday.

Kelly compiled an 11-under-par 269 for the tournament. He also won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Firestone in 2020.

"The first major is awesome, but the second one, even more validation," Kelly said. "I think that puts me at nine or so. I'm really excited to go back to Sawgrass next March. That was a big piece of the desire in winning this tournament. That's one of those great things that we have with our majors that we can get to go play at the high point of golf. I'm really excited about that."

Kelly made a birdie on Nos. 13, 16 and 17. He made a bogey on No. 4.

"The shot of the tournament for me was out of the trees on 13," Kelly said. "That was one of the best shots of my life and it checked perfectly into that hill. I didn't even know if I'd be able to fly it that far, I thought I might have to roll it up, but when it came out hot, that's when I knew it had to sit down and it just dug right in and got really close. So that was my first birdie, so that kind of opened the door."

Steve Stricker finished second at 9-under-par 271 for the tournament.

Kelly and Stricker, residents of Madison, both carded a 2-under 68 on Sunday.

Stricker won the 2021 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship.

"I was looking to come out on top of all this," Stricker said. "There was a lot of guys in the mix, right, and had a part of the lead there for a little while. Really, just the undoing came at 13. I was going along nicely and hit it in the only spot you can't hit it in and that's that bunker. That's a tough tee ball for me. Yeah, didn't have a play out of there, so that was a bogey. Then to not make the putt at 14 and three-putt 15, that stretch of holes there just killed me. And then Jerry playing those holes well, he birdied 13 and made two pars. Yeah, so I played those in two over and that was the difference.

"... [Jerry] played great and he made the putts when he had to coming down to the end. He made a nice putt at 13 for birdie and then I basically showed him the line at 16 and he made another great one at 17. So yeah, he made the putts when he had to coming down, and vice versa, I didn't. Again, that's the difference."

Steven Alker and Ernie Els tied for third at 8-under.

Alker shot a 69 and Els posted a 68 Sunday.

"I just made too many bogeys over the weekend, that was the difference," Alker said. "... Even when I'm not at the top of my game, I still feel I have a chance, I feel good about the golf course and just enjoying it. This was a pretty fun week here at Firestone. This is my first trip. It's been great."

Stephen Ames compiled a 65 on Sunday to finish tied for fifth at 6-under with Ken Duke, Woody Austin and Alex Čejka.

David Toms finished ninth at 5-under and Marco Dawson rounded out the top 10 at 4-under.

Jerry Kelly Wins Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship at Firestone CC

Jerry Kelly posted a 1-under 69 to claim a two-stroke victory over Scott Parel at the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship.

Kelly, who owned the top spot after each of the opening rounds, clinged to a one-shot advantage over Parel after a bogey on No. 11. But that lead tripled when the Wisconsin native aced the 177-yard par-3 12th, using a 5-iron.

“I mean, it was perfect timing after making my first bogey. I wanted a bounce-back birdie, but definitely a bounce-back eagle was even better, said Kelly, who led the field with 51 greens hit in regulation.

“It was just a really clean shot. It was everything that I wanted to do. And when the brain works and then the muscles work and it follows the tune and actually goes in, it’s pretty amazing.”

A bogey by Parel on the very next hole provided Kelly with a four-shot cushion which was never threatened down the stretch, despite closing with a double bogey.

“So, yeah, just happy to build a lead that we could do that on 18,” joked Kelly.

Kelly (-3) and Parel (-1) were the only two players in the 80-plus player field to finish 72 holes of golf in the red.

Tied for third-place at level-par was the duo of Colin Montgomerie (71) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (69), who were the only other players to finish even-par or better.

Rod Pampling shot a low-round 66 to finish tied for fifth on 2-over par, alongside Ernie Els (70) and Woody Austin (73).

Parting Question For Jerry Kelly

Jerry Kelly Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship at Firestone CC

Q. And then THE PLAYERS Championship, that’s going to be pretty cool.

JERRY KELLY : “Yeah, no, it’s seriously one of my favorite places on the planet. I love it. I love playing there. I love the tournament. I hope it’s not too cold and rainy.

“But I like that it’s back in March, it’s tougher. So you got to get the ball in the fairway. It will be lush and it will be deep, I hope, with the rough.

“So yeah, it’s a fairways and greens place. It’s good.”

Jerry Kelly wins PGA Tour Champions playoff in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jerry Kelly birdied the first hole of a playoff with Kirk Triplett on Sunday to win the PGA Tour Champions' Principal Charity Classic.

Kelly hit his approach to 4 feet on the par-4 18th to set up the winning putt. The 55-year-old from Wisconsin has nine victories on the 50-and-over tour after winning three times on the PGA Tour.

He broke out of a putting slump with help from Steve Stricker, his Madison, Wisconsin, friend and neighbor who tied for eighth.

“It felt good all week. I just had to keep my patience in there. That was what sent me through, besides obviously Steve’s putting lesson again. But really is the patience. Because of that, because I was able to make some putts, that really carried me through.”

Kelly and Triplett each shot 5-under 67 to finish at 18-under 198 at Wakonda Club, two strokes ahead of Steven Alker and Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer.

Kelly returned from a lightning delay to play the final three holes of regulation, making a birdie on the par-3 17th. Triplett birdied the par-4 16th and closed with two pars.

“Just a good old-fashioned afternoon Midwest thunder boomer pop-up,” Kelly said about the storm. “It didn’t last long, luckily. Didn’t even think we were going to need to hit balls, but I’m glad I did because I found out just how old I am on that first drive in the playoff.”

The 60-year-old Triplett won the last of his eight senior titles in 2019.

Alker followed his second-round 64 with a 69. The Senior PGA Championship winner last week in Michigan, the 50-year-old New Zealander has four victories in his last 13 events.

The 64-year-old Langer had four back-nine birdies in a 68.

Brett Quigley was fifth at 15 under after a 70.

Paul Goydos (65) and Brandt Jobe (67) were 14 under, and Stricker (67) and Kevin Sutherland (67) were 13 under.

Stricker returned after having to withdraw from the Senior PGA because of a positive COVID-19 test result. He won the major in Alabama in his previous start.

Stricker will host the American Family Insurance Championship next week in Madison. Kelly is the two-time defending champion.

The 55-year-old captured his fourth PGA Tour Champions title of the season at the Shaw Charity Classic at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He and John Huston were tied at 9 under following 54 holes, but Kelly birdied the par-5 18th on the first playoff hole to add another victory to his resume.

He had a lengthy putt for eagle from the back of the green, which he lagged to about 4 feet. He then poured in the birdie and gave a big first pump toward the crowd.

Kelly, who also won the Bridgestone Senior Players earlier this year, shot a 3-under 67 in the final round. The victory moves him to second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Kelly had rounds of 68 and 66 during the first two days.

Huston fired a 5-under 65 on Sunday to make the playoff. Five golfers tied for third, one stroke out of the playoff. Joe Durant shot the round of the day, an 8-under 62, to finish at 8 under for the tournament, along with Padraig Harrington, Dean Wilson, Alex Cejka and Kirk Triplett. Triplett held the solo lead after the second round at 7 under.

Marco Dawson and Shane Bertsch rounded out the top 10, finishing in a tie for eighth at 7 under.

Up next, the Champions Tour travels to the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington.

He broke out of a putting slump with help from Steve Stricker , his Madison, Wisconsin, friend and neighbor who tied for eighth.

Jerry Kelly wins Senior Players for 2nd time in 3 years

Jerry Kelly celebrates after winning the PGA Tour Champions Principal Charity Classic golf...

He finished at 11-under 269 on Firestone’s South Course.

“That’s the difference.”

The 55-year-old Stricker, also from Madison, matched Kelly with a closing 68.

“Not really what I had in mind, really,” Stricker said. “I was looking to come out on top of all this.”

Sticker missed a chance for his second major victory of the season after taking the Regions Tradition in May in Alabama.

“He played great and he made the putts when he had to,” Stricker said about Kelly. “He made a nice putt at 13 for birdie and then I basically showed him the line at 16 and he made another great one at 17.”
