Country Music heavyweight, Josh Thompson, has made quite an impression on the Country charts and even the Billboard 200, with his two albums thus far in his career both being within the top 40. He also has five top 40 Country singles to his name.

Josh Thompson is originally from Cedarburg, Wisconsin and decided to move to Nashville, Tennessee in 2005, where he found work as a songwriter, his first single being the song “Growing Up Is Getting Old”, the title track of his 2009 album. Following the success of this, Thompson signed with Columbia Records, and quickly released his “Beer on the Table” towards the end of 2009. It made it straight into the Country Charts, and would eventually peak at number 17.

After releasing an EP that featured the song and three others, he released the full-length album “Way Out Here” on February 23rd 2010. It would go on to peak at number 9 in the Country charts, and number 28 in the Billboard 200 chart, amassing sales of over 152,000. The title track from the album made it to number 15 in the County charts and to number 85 in the Hot 100. Thompson embarked on a 32-date tour with Eric Church, and then released his album’s third single “Won’t Be Lonely Long” on November 22nd 2010.

The following year, he co-wrote a song on Brad Paisley’s album “This Is Country Music”, called “A Man Don’t Have to Die”. He also transferred to RCA Nashville and released the single “Comin’ Around” which made it to number 31 on the Country charts, but he later announced that he would be leaving the major label to sign with Show Dog-Universal Music on which he would release the album “Turn It Up” on April 1st 2014.

Live reviews

I heard Beer on the Table on the radio when I was driving cross country back in 2010 and was compelled to find the artist and listen to more music. This is how I came across Josh Thompson, and became a huge fan of the country music artist. After listening to Way Out Here in its entirety countless times, I was desperate to see Thompson live. His writing has a magical touch, and is extremely catchy, so I found myself singing his music over and over again.

When I finally got the chance to see him live, it was just after the release of Turn It Up, so it was awesome to hear the new album performed live. He walked on stage with his guitar, and stood humbly centre stage to introduce himself. He opened the show eith Cold Beer With Your Name On It, and immediately brought the house down. There’s nothing quite like watching a musician playing their instrument and performing live, and seeing Thompson play his guitar really made me realise what a talented all round musician he is. After a few acoustic songs, he got his band out on stage and played through the rest of the album, including my favourite track, Wanted Me Gone. He was great at interacting with the audience and had everyone singing along which was a lot of fun. He’s really a pleasure to see live.

Although some of the country icons such as Willy Nelson and Hank Williams have earned their place over careers that span decades, other artists make more of an immediate impact on both the circuit and the charts. This is true of Wisconsin singer/songwriter Josh Thompson who has enjoyed two well received albums and a handful of country hits to find himself ascending venues at an alarming rate.

Despite the vastness of the space and the size of the crowd, Josh appears tonight with a cool and confident demeanour as with his trusty acoustic in hand there is very little that could go wrong. Although he has only been working the rounds since 2006, he has a great way of addressing the crowds and getting them involved throughout the night. There is no encouragement needed for 'Way Out Here' and 'Won't Be Lonely Long' whilst the finale of 'Beer on The Table' is sang back at deafening levels as Josh finds himself applauding the enthusiastic audiences.

The music industry tends to shift into high gear in January following a restful Christmas holiday. One country star who is definitely in that mindset right now is Josh Thompson .

Not only is the Wisconsin native putting the final touches on his sophomore release, due out on RCA later this year, he is going on the road — in a big way. Last year, he performed over 250 dates, and 2012 looks to follow suit, with his “Change Is Comin” tour scheduled to begin February 3 in Charlotte, NC!

In an exclusive interview with Billboard’s The 615 , Thompson said he was looking forward to taking his music to the people.

“We’re headed out on the road for at least the next four months,” he said excitedly.

Though he has performed with some of the top names in the business, like Hank Williams, Jr. and Dierks Bentley, Thompson will be going this tour alone. Asked whether there was any trepidation about that, he said “No, there isn’t,” adding that “We’ve been doing a lot of shows by ourselves. We’re just going back to the markets that we have been to — the ones that have been really good for us. The shows have gotten bigger, and I think that has to do with the fact that I’ve gotten so many great tunes.”

He does admit that he has watched and learned from some of the artists he has opened for in the past. What did he carry away from them “Really, it was just watching the show and the flow of it. It’s amazing how the music doesn’t stop. It’s just a real audience participation kind of show, and the fans are able to get face to face with them. I think that has a lot to do with it.”

Being on the highways as much as he is definitely qualifies Thompson as a “road warrior.” He smiles when he hears that description. “I’ve heard it so much. It just kind of makes me laugh. I guess that’s what you would call it. We do stay gone quite a bit, but it’s important for me to get out in front of people and make some believers.”

He’s also made some “believers” at country radio, who have helped make “Beer On The Table” and “Way Out Here” hit records. They are already spinning the new single, which Thompson is excited about. “It’s the first single from the second record. The song is called ‘Comin’ Around.’ It’s really about coming around and doing some thinking about where you’ve been wrong before — like hating your parent’s music or hating the town you’re from. Then, one day, you wake up and decide that you miss those things. It’s just that kind of turning point.”

The new project teams Thompson with highly-esteemed producer Phil O’Donnell. The singer said the two fit together perfectly. “His nickname is ‘Philbilly.’ That should tell you right there. He’s about as hillbilly as they come, and really a great guy. He’s very good friends with the musicians that I wanted to play with on this record, so it was a great choice.”

Josh has also been busy with his writing the past couple of years, earning cuts by Jason Michael Carroll and Brad Paisley, among others. He’s also had a chance to collaborate with a few of his heroes, such as John Anderson.

“That was awesome,” he says. “I’ve had the chance to write with some legends, and John Anderson was one of them. It’s one of those things that you almost have to pinch yourself in the middle of doing. There’s always those things that you never thought you would be doing in your life, and for me, that was one of them. Sitting in a room with him, and writing a song with him was one of the highlights in my career.”

With a new single, album, and tour, it looks like Thompson is hoping for a big 2012. What are his goals for the year? “I would love to see a top ten or number one single,” he said. “The record is coming out later this year. So, I’m excited about that. I’m hoping for a big first week, and hope that the record is loved by the people. We’ll be on the road a lot, getting the new music out in front of people!”

Josh Thompson , in February 2023, won the USA Indoor 1500m (3:42.10 in Albuquerque, 4959ft), but was later DQed for impeding a competitor's progress.

He competed in the 2022 World Championships 1500m final, finishing 12th (3:35.57), and earlier in March, also placed 12th in the World Indoor Championships (3:44.48).

In 2020, Thompson won the USA Indoor 1500m title, clocking 3:44.07 at altitude in Albuquerque, NM, and in 2019, he won the Aetna Falmouth Elite Mile in 3:58.39.

As an Oklahoma State senior in 2017, he finished 6th in the NCAA Indoor Mile and 4th outdoors in the 1500.

In February 2016, Josh became the first Nevada native to run a Mile in under 4 minutes, clocking 3:58.33 indoors at the University of Washington’s Husky Classic.

At Moapa Valley High School, he lead the cross country team to two Nevada state titles as well as winning two 3200m state titles.

FUN FACT: He was also a member of the state championship basketball team, and at 5'9", could dunk the basketball.

FUN FACT II: The Eagle Scout spent two years (2013-14) on a Mormon mission in Nicaragua.

The heartfelt ode, which pays tribute to small-town America and country upbringing, is Riley’s first new release since 2023’s Ain’t My Last Rodeo .

“I’ve always loved this song. ‘Way Out Here’ is out everywhere now. Hope y’all like it!” Riley shares on Instagram.

Penned by Josh, David Lee Murphy and Casey Beathard , it was originally released in 2010 as the second single from Josh’s debut album, Way Out Here .

2024 Texas Open odds, picks, field, predictions: Golf expert fading Rory McIlroy at TPC San Antonio

O ne of the oldest PGA Tour events takes place this week when 156 players tee off in the 2024 Valero Texas Open beginning on Thursday at TPC San Antonio. The Texas Open was first played in 1922. Only the U.S. Open (1895), Western Open (1899), Canadian Open (1904) and PGA Championship (1916) are older among current PGA Tour events in North America. This week, world No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the +900 favorite in the 2024 Valero Texas Open odds. He is making his first start since finishing 19th at The Players Championship three weeks ago. 

Ludvig Aberg is the +1200 second choice in the Valero Texas Open 2024 field. Jordan Spieth (+2000), Hideki Matsuyama (+2000) and Max Homa (+2200) round out the top five choices. Before locking in any 2024 Texas Open picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 37-23-2 and returning 9.853 units over that span. That's a $985 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed 75-1 longshot Wyndham Clark as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Top 2024 Texas Open expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading McIlroy, even though he is the favorite at +900. The 34-year-old from Northern Ireland has been splitting his time this year between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. His best finish on the PGA Tour is 19th at the Players Championship three weeks ago.

So far this season, McIlroy ranks 94th on tour in strokes gained: putting (-0.036). "While I think he's a solid course fit and an elite player, his price is too short," Nejad told SportsLine.

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Byeong Hun An, who is listed at +3500. The 32-year-old from South Korea has two top-five and three top-10 finishes this season. He enters the week seventh in the FedEx Cup standings.

Nejad likes that An has excelled from tee-to-green this season. He ranks 13th on the PGA Tour in driving distance (308.1 yards) and 14th in greens in regulation percentage (71.26%). "When things are clicking he's easily capable of contending on a Sunday afternoon," Nejad said.  See which other golfers to back at SportsLine .
