Ellen DeGeneres is coming back with a new comedy special—and it's going to be her last
The television icon is back for one last round of comedy.
Ellen is officially back — but for a limited time only.
Ellen DeGeneres, one of the most successful comedians of the last three decades, is about to make her return to stand up after the unceremonious canceling of her popular daytime talk show.
DeGeneres' new special will be an hour long and will be released on Netflix later this year. It marks her return to Netflix after her 2018 special Relatable – the last stand up special she released – aired on the streamer.
In a statement about the new special, DeGeneres said, "To answer the questions everyone is asking me – Yes, I'm going to talk about it. Yes this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life."
The "it" DeGeneres says she will talk about is probably the fact that she ended her popular daytime talk show after allegations that she was at the head of a toxic workplace environment. After ending her show, DeGeneres has not starred in any new comedy projects until now.
It's also notable that she says this will be her last special. Her other specials include the aforementioned Relatable , as well as two HBO specials, The Beginning and Here and Now .
In 2021, DeGeneres decided to end her 19-season-long daytime talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show after accusations that the show had a toxic work environment that relied on bullying, racism, and insults came out.
Ellen's fall from grace came as a huge surprise to many, as she was seen as one of the faces of niceness and likeability on TV. However, after the allegations came out , her show's ratings tanked, going down by 40-59 percent in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' 's Farewell Season to Premiere Next Month — See the First Look!
Ellen DeGeneres' namesake talk show will return for season 19 on Sept. 13
It's the end of an era for The Ellen DeGeneres Show .
Beginning Sept. 13, host Ellen DeGeneres will kick off the 19th and final season of her namesake talk show.
In PEOPLE's exclusive first look at the upcoming season, the clip provides a glimpse at many highlights featured on DeGeneres' series over the years.
Celebrity guests including George Clooney , Justin Timberlake and Michelle Obama appear as the video looks back on the 4,000 guests who have stopped by the show. The clip then reflects on the "almost half a billion [dollars] given away" to worthy fans and the "countless lives changed" by the series.
At the end of it all, there's still "one thankful host" who has been with viewers throughout the nearly two decades-long journey. "You've changed my life," DeGeneres, 63, says.
DeGeneres announced in May that she will be ending her long-running talk show in 2022. She told The Hollywood Reporter that the shakeup, which comes after allegations of a toxic work environment on the series' set, is due to her needing "something new to challenge" her.
"I was going to stop after season 16. That was going to be my last season, and they wanted to sign for four more years and I said I'd sign maybe for one," she continued. "They were saying there was no way to sign for one. 'We can't do that with the affiliates and the stations need more of a commitment.'"
"So, we [settled] on three more years, and I knew that would be my last. That's been the plan all along," she added.
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE 's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
DeGeneres further addressed the decision during a discussion with Oprah Winfrey . "I feel like it's the right thing to do, but I'm charged," she told Winfrey, 67, on her show. "It's a weird thing to announce that I'm stopping,"
She additionally explained that "there's just different things as a creative person that I feel like I need to do" going forward.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show premiered in 2003 and has won countless Emmy Awards . Following its departure from air in 2022, Kelly Clarkson 's namesake series, The Kelly Clarkson Show , will fill DeGeneres' series' former slot .
The Ellen DeGeneres Show returns for its final season on Sept. 13.

Ellen DeGeneres riffs on getting ‘kicked out’ of showbiz after toxic-culture allegations

For Ellen DeGeneres, toxic-workplace allegations that clouded her long-running daytime series marked the end of an era. This week, the comedian’s public fallout became comeback material.
Two years after “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” aired its final episode in 2022, its 66-year-old host re-entered the spotlight with a Thursday night set at Largo at the Coronet Theatre. During her set, the first on her Ellen’s Last Stand … Up Tour, DeGeneres joked to her audience, “I got kicked out of show business,” according to Rolling Stone.
“There’s no mean people in show business,” she said sarcastically.
How Ellen DeGeneres won, and then lost, a generation of viewers
Battered by scandal, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” ends its 19-year run on Thursday. Its host is no longer the queer celebrity we can all agree on.
May 20, 2022
Multiple outlets reported that DeGeneres’ set revolved heavily around the controversy that colored the final year of her Daytime Emmy-winning show and soured the public’s perception of the “Finding Nemo” comedian. In July 2020, an investigation by BuzzFeed News detailed allegations of intimidation and racism on the long-running show that challenged its host’s “Be kind” mantra. A second report detailed instances of alleged sexual misconduct involving the show’s three top producers.
The fallout resulted in the departure of three members of the show’s production team and the announcement that DeGeneres would end her show in 2022 , after 19 seasons’ worth of memorable celebrity guest interviews, pranks and dance breaks.
DeGeneres reportedly lamented how she became the “most hated person in America” after the allegations dropped, People reported. She also acknowledged that she “didn’t know how to be a boss,” especially one for a production as large and popular as her talk show, Rolling Stone said.
Ellen DeGeneres has left the building: ‘When we started the show, I couldn’t say “gay”’
Jennifer Aniston, Pink and Billie Eilish were the final guests on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ which ended Thursday after 19 seasons.
May 26, 2022
DeGeneres is no stranger to causing a stir in the daytime talk TV space. She reportedly reminded audience members Thursday about how her career suffered after she came out as lesbian in a 1997 episode of the sitcom “Ellen.”
“This is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business,” DeGeneres said. “Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old and gay.”
Despite cracking jokes about her most recent fall from grace, DeGeneres said “it’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem,” before criticizing the “extremes in this business” of being either idolized or hated. DeGeneres also contemplated who she is without her show and expressed gratitude for wife Portia de Rossi’s ongoing support, Rolling Stone reported.
DeGeneres concluded her evening at the Largo answering questions from her audience. One fan reportedly asked how her 2022 scandal compared to the 1997 backlash, and DeGeneres responded, “It was so hurtful.”

She added: “I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way.”
DeGeneres returns to Largo on Friday and will perform several other shows at the West Hollywood venue through early June. In the summer, she will take her comedy to San Diego, Portland, Ore., and Santa Rosa, among other cities. More information about her Last Stand …Up Tour can be found on her website .

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses ‘Getting Kicked Out of Show Business’ on Her New Comedy Tour: ‘It’s Been a Toll on My Ego’
By Krystie Lee Yandoli
Krystie Lee Yandoli
As she strode onto the famed comedy stage of the Largo at the Coronet Theater in the heart of West Hollywood on Wednesday night, Ellen DeGeneres was a woman in command. A sold-out crowd of about 200 fans burst into roaring applause, eager to see the comedian turned talk-show host return to her comedy roots on the first night of her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour . And she didn’t disappoint. Dressed in a simple, black long-sleeved shirt, white pants, and sneakers, DeGeneres addressed the elephant in the room with her first words.
“I used to say that I didn’t care what other people thought of me and I realized…I said that at the height of my popularity,” DeGeneres said, prompting the audience to erupt in laughter. “It is such a waste of time to worry about what other people think…Right now I’m hoping you’re thinking, ‘This is marvelous, I’m so happy to be here.’ But you could be thinking, ‘Let’s see how this goes.’”

Her Wednesday night set — culled from material DeGeneres said she’s been working on for about six months, including in a handful of performances — kicked off with a recap of what she’s been up to since her talk-show ended: gardening, a lot of sweatpants-wearing, and collecting chickens as pets. She joked that as someone who once hosted a daily show, she appreciates the plight of the chicken who has to lay an egg every day. Still, most of the routine found her grappling with having become Public Enemy No. 1 — a whiplash turn from her once-firm reputation as the happy-go-lucky talk-show host who ended each episode telling her audience to “be kind to one another.”
“What else can I tell you?” she mused, mock-reflecting on her recent past before adding sarcastically, “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

“I didn’t go to business school. I went to Charlie’s Chuckle Hutt,” DeGeneres joked. “The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said ‘Ellen’ and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said ‘Ellen,’ but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge.”
She chalked up some of the vitriol she faced at the time to sexism, noting that “there are consequences” for not following the pre-existing rules and gender roles. Referencing the cancellation of her eponymous sitcom in the 1990s after she’d announced to the world that she was gay, she added wryly, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business…Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”
The demise of her talk show seems especially painful for DeGeneres since, as she described in her set, it had been her way back to being embraced after her Nineties exile. “I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”
As a 66-year-old woman, DeGeneres said she’s also grown increasingly aware of the aging process both physically and mentally. She finds herself thinking about existential subjects like time and the universe, and said her doctor recently told her she has osteoporosis and arthritis. Plus, she joked, now she’s at a point in her life where she’s obsessing over Wheel of Fortune .
Bringing up chickens as another metaphor for women and gender roles, DeGeneres made her point with “one last chicken joke,” as she put it. “Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she wanted to and you wouldn’t ask a rooster that.”
At the conclusion of her set, the crowd gave DeGeneres a standing ovation, prompting her to return to the stage for a candid conversation with the audience. DeGeneres called on people one by one as they asked questions and shared messages of gratitude. One same-sex couple said they had gotten married earlier that day and asked for marital advice. (DeGeneres’ wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi, briefly made an appearance onstage during the Q&A, at fans’ request; DeGeneres explained that the last few years had been very tough on de Rossi as well, saying, “We were both just laying low for a while.”) One woman thanked DeGeneres for her original Netflix comedy special (2018’s Relatable ) because it made her mom laugh when she was diagnosed with cancer. Another woman expressed her thanks to DeGeneres for participating in her autistic daughter’s bat mitzvah. One person who said they’d been inspired by DeGeneres’ positivity asked if she used dancing as a means of escape during her recent tough period.
“No. It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres replied. “But I am dancing now.”
DeGeneres flashed another moment of sensitivity and bewilderment when a fan asked if her first go-round with public scrutiny after coming out prepared her for the next one, when The Ellen DeGeneres Show collapsed.
“This was a whole different thing,” she replied. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal… I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”
DeGeneres added that it took her a long time to figure out what she wanted to say on the topic and how she wanted to say it.

Ellen DeGeneres is ‘going to talk about it’ in final standup special on Netflix
We all know what “it” is.
Ellen DeGeneres will soon address the elephant in the room.
In a press release announcing her final standup special, the comedian hinted that she could discuss the toxic workplace allegations that former employees of The Ellen DeGeneres Show publicized in 2020. “To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it,” DeGeneres said in the press release. “Yes this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”
Netflix announced that DeGeneres’ new standup special will launch later this year, marking her second with the platform after 2018’s Relatable . The comedian will also embark on a stand-up tour beginning with a show in San Diego on June 19.
Rumors about the work environment at The Ellen DeGeneres Show began to gain traction in March 2020, as users on social media alleged several troubling anecdotes characterizing DeGeneres as a temperamental and harsh boss. A few months later, BuzzFeed News published two reports in which numerous former and current employees of the show detailed the racist microaggressions and intimidation that they allegedly faced while working on the daytime talk show.

In response to that wave of allegations, DeGeneres’ executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly, and Andy Lassner released a statement saying, “We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience. It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has set for us. For the record, the day-to-day responsibility of the Ellen show is completely on us. We take all of this very seriously and we realize, as many in the world are learning, that we need to do better, are committed to do better, and we will do better."
Additionally, WarnerMedia reportedly launched an internal investigation into the series after the BuzzFeed allegations, and DeGeneres vaguely discussed the atmosphere on her show in a letter to staffers . "As we've grown exponentially, I've not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I'd want them done," DeGeneres wrote. "Clearly some didn't. That will now change and I'm committed to ensuring this does not happen again."
After a handful of the show’s producers were accused of sexual misconduct and harassment , the show made staffing changes in leadership positions, and DeGeneres apologized to her employees again on a Zoom call. “Does that mean I’m perfect? No. I’m not. I’m a multi-layered person, and I try to be the best person I can be and I try to learn from my mistakes," she said.

The show then launched its 19th season in September 2020, and DeGeneres addressed the allegations in her first episode since the controversy began. “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened,” she said. “I am so sorry to the people who were affected. I know that I'm in a position of privilege and power. I realized that with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”
“The truth is I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things,” she continued. “Sometimes I get sad. I get mad. I get anxious. I get frustrated. I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress and I'm especially working on the impatience thing because, and it's not going well because it's not happening fast enough.”
The next year, DeGeneres announced that her show would end after 19 seasons, though she did not cite the controversy as a reason for its conclusion (though the show did reportedly lose over a million viewers following the allegations).
DeGeneres said she “really didn’t understand” the allegations in an interview with Today in May 2021. "It was too orchestrated, it was too coordinated,” she said. “People get picked on, but for four months straight and then for me to read in the press about a toxic work environment when all I've ever heard from every guest that comes on the show is what a happy atmosphere this is and what a happy place this is.”
Last month, DeGeneres discussed the aftermath of the controversy at a small stand-up gig at the Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles. "The hate went on for a long time, and I would try to avoid looking at the news," she said. "The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind. That was the headline." She also said she had a “hard time” following the allegations, and that "It's hard to dance when you're crying.” She also characterized the show’s end as herself “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.”

Ellen DeGeneres is set to return to Netflix with a new stand-up special, her second for the streamer and what she’s calling her “last special,” later this year.
“To answer the questions everyone is asking me — yes, I’m going to talk about it,” DeGeneres said in a statement. “Yes, this is my last special. Yes, [wife] Portia [de Rossi] really is that pretty in real life.”

The special will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73.
While this will be her second stand-up special for Netflix, it also marks her first special since the 2022 end of her eponymous daytime talk show, after 19 seasons, which came after she faced personal criticism and claims of a toxic workplace in the summer of 2020.
The allegations, initially reported by Buzzfeed News , led to an internal investigation and the dismissal of key executives .
When DeGeneres returned to Ellen after her summer hiatus that fall, she addressed the toxic-workplace claims, saying, “I learned that things happen here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously. And I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”
Still, as she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 when she decided to end her show, these claims weren’t the reason she stepped down.
“It almost impacted the show,” she said at the time. “It was very hurtful to me. I mean, very . But if I was quitting the show because of that, I wouldn’t have come back this season. So, it’s not why I’m stopping, but it was hard.”
According to Netflix, DeGeneres is set to kick off a multi-city tour June 19 in San Diego. But she’s already returned to stand-up, making headlines last month for joking about the toxic-workplace controversy and the end of her show.
She continued to say that she was “the most hated person in America.”
“The hate went on for a long time, and I would try to avoid looking at the news,” DeGeneres said, according to People . “The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
In a Q&A with the audience after her set ended, DeGeneres reflected on what was a rough time for her personally.
“I’m making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating,” she said. “It took a long time for me to want to do anything again,” adding that she “hated the way the show ended” because she “loved that show so much.”
When DeGeneres spoke to THR around her talk show ending, she said she would try to “sit still” for a while but indicated she was open to movies and stand-up.
“I also love doing stand-up, so I can always write another special and go out and [perform], which is Portia’s preference,” DeGeneres said in 2022 . “She really loved when we went out on what she calls ‘a tour.’ She doesn’t understand, we only went to seven cities.”

The special, which marks her second for Netflix, will arrive later in 2024. It will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73.
In addition to the special, DeGeneres will also kick off a multi-city stand-up tour on June 19 in San Diego.

For 19 seasons, DeGeneres hosted the talk series, which won 63 Daytime Emmys in total. Before “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” she broke out as the star of “Ellen,” an ABC sitcom in which DeGeneres’ character came out as gay shortly after DeGeneres did the same in real life. It was a groundbreaking television moment in 1997 that sparked widespread controversy and prompted the network to slap a parental advisory at the start of each episode.
DeGeneres is also known for her prolific stand-up comedy career; hosting the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys; and creating and hosting “Ellen’s Game of Games.”
“There is nobody quite like Ellen. She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can’t wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year,” said Robbie Praw, VP of stand-up and comedy formats at Netflix.

When she says “it,” Degeneres is likely referring to her controversy-laden exit from The Ellen DeGeneres Show , after allegations of a toxic workplace culture emerged in 2020. She ended her run there on May 26, 2022 after 19 seasons, during which the show garnered 64 Daytime Emmy Awards including 12 for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show, coming in as the record holder in that category.
Coming to tape the Grammy-nominated Relatable following a 15-year hiatus from stand-up, Degeneres previously put out the HBO stand-up specials The Beginning and Here and Now , both of which were recognized with multiple Emmy nominations. As a producer, her most recent projects include the Discovery docs Endangered and Saving the Gorillas: Ellen’s Next Adventure .

Ellen DeGeneres announces her final special and promises to talk about 'it'
Ellen DeGeneres is planning a new comedy special that she says will be her last.
The comedian and former "Ellen DeGeneres Show" host, 66, will star in an hourlong comedy special on Netflix later this year, Deadline reported May 13.
The unnamed special will come more than five years after “Relatable,” DeGeneres’ first Netflix comedy special, which premiered in December 2018.
DeGeneres confirmed the news of the upcoming special on Instagram when she posted the image of Deadline's story. “To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life," she joked in her caption, referring to her wife, Portia de Rossi.
Though she didn't specify what she meant by "talk about it," it may have referred to the accusations of a toxic workplace at her daytime talk show , which ended in 2022.
The accusations were documented in a July 2020 BuzzFeed report , which featured current and former "Ellen DeGeneres Show" staff members alleging they endured a culture of racism, fear and intimidation while working for the show.
The report prompted an internal investigation, and it was later announced that three of the show's executive producers had "parted ways" with the program.
DeGeneres called the report and the backlash "devastating" while speaking to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie in 2021 after announcing her decision to end her program after its 19th season.
"It started with attacks on me and attacking everything that I stand for and believe in and built my career around," said the comedian, adding, "I am a kind person. I am a person who likes to make people happy."
The Emmy winner told Savannah she had “no idea” problems existed behind the scenes of her show until she read the allegations "in the press."
“I don’t know how I could have known when there’s 225 employees here and there are a lot of different buildings,” said DeGeneres. “Unless I actually stayed here until that last person goes home at night.
“It’s my name on the show, so clearly it affects me, and I have to be the one to stand up and say this can’t be tolerated,” she said.
DeGeneres, who has kept a lower profile since her talk show left the air, said she was "not bulletproof" and did not have "thick skin."
"I’m extremely sensitive to the point of it’s not healthy how sensitive I am," she said.
“When something is coming back at me that I know is not true, I guess I could take one or two of those shots, but four months in a row took a toll on me.”

Ellen DeGeneres to return with Netflix special: Yes, I’m going to talk about it
Ellen DeGeneres will return to Netflix for her final stand-up special.
The US comedian stepped down from The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2022 after allegations of a toxic workplace environment.
The 66-year-old previously apologised to staff after an internal review found “deficiencies related to the show’s day-to-day management”, but denied this was the reason for her exit.
On Monday, DeGeneres announced she is set to return with her final TV comedy special, appearing to suggest it will feature her departure from The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which she had hosted since 2003.
“Here we go!,” DeGeneres said, sharing the news on Instagram.
“To answer the questions everyone is asking me – Yes, I’m going to talk about it.
“Yes this is my last special.
“Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life,” referencing her wife of 16 years.
The special will mark her second for Netflix, following her 2018 special titled Relatable.

Ellen DeGeneres Promises to ‘Talk About It’ in Final Netflix Comedy Special
Ellen DeGeneres is returning to television for the first time since her long-running talk show ended in 2022, as the comedian will take a new stand-up routine to Netflix later this year.
The streamer announced DeGeneres’ new special, which will reportedly serve as her last, revealing that the special will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73. Regarding the show’s premise, DeGeneres shared a revealing quote about what topics will be discussed onstage.
“To answer the questions everyone is asking me: Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life,” she added about wife and actress Portia de Rossi .
As fans of DeGeneres will recall, the former talk show host found herself embroiled in controversy toward the end of her show’s run after toxic workplace allegations behind the scenes. While DeGeneres doesn’t specifically reference this in the quote, it seems heavily implied, hinting that some big insights may loom on the horizon.
This untitled special will serve as DeGeneres’s second on Netflix following her 2018 show Relatable . “There is nobody quite like Ellen. She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can’t wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year,” Robbie Praw, VP of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats at Netflix shared in a statement.
Ellen DeGeneres Addresses Getting 'Kicked Out' of Showbiz
The news comes as DeGeneres prepares to embark on a multi-city tour beginning June 19th in San Diego, California. Considered a television icon best known for hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for 19 seasons, DeGeneres’s talk show took home more than 60 Daytime Emmys throughout its run.

Ellen DeGeneres announces her 'last' stand-up comedy special
Ellen degeneres, the renowned comedian and former talk show host, is making a comeback to netflix with a bang.
- United States
Ellen DeGeneres, the renowned comedian and former talk show host, is making a comeback to Netflix with a bang! Netflix has officially announced that DeGeneres will be headlining a brand new stand-up comedy special, marking her return to the streaming giant since her 2018 special, 'Relatable'.
However, the excitement is tinged with a hint of nostalgia as the star herself revealed that this upcoming special will be her last taped one. In a statement shared with People magazine, DeGeneres addressed the curiosity surrounding her return, affirming, "Yes, I'm going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special."
She also couldn't resist expressing admiration for her wife, Portia de Rossi, adding, "Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life." Netflix's Vice President of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats, Robbie Praw, praised DeGeneres as a true legend and pioneer, eagerly anticipating the release of her latest comedy venture later this year, according to People magazine.
Produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73, the special promises to showcase DeGeneres at her comedic best, touching upon a myriad of topics including the end of her iconic show, 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', after its successful 19-season run in 2022. While DeGeneres embarks on a multi-city stand-up tour starting June 19 in San Diego, her statement suggests that this show marks a significant conclusion in her comedy career.
Despite recent controversies and her departure from daytime television, DeGeneres remains steadfast in her commitment to spreading joy through laughter. Addressing attendees at her April show, she emphasized the importance of humour during difficult times, hinting at a desire for more laughter and less drama. With her final Netflix special on the horizon, fans eagerly anticipate one last uproarious ride with Ellen DeGeneres, bidding farewell to an era of laughter and entertainment. (ANI)

Ellen DeGeneres Says She “Hated” The Way ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ Ended: “It Was Devastating”

Two years after The Ellen DeGeneres Show reached its abrupt end, Ellen DeGeneres will be returning to Netflix with her second stand-up special for the streamer, which could also be her very last.
People reports that DeGeneres’ new comedy special will premiere late this year after the comedian embarks on a multi-city stand-up tour starting June 19. This marks her second special for Netflix, releasing six years after her 2018 special, Relatable .
Most notably, this will be DeGeneres’ first special since her reputation took a hit in 2020, after several anonymous Ellen Show employees detailed their experiences with racism, sexual misconduct, and hostility behind the scenes in a BuzzFeed News exposé. The disgraced talk show host ended the award-winning show in 2022 after 19 seasons on the air.
And it sounds like the comedian knows the messy end of her show will be at the top of viewers’ minds.
“To answer the questions everyone is asking me – Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life,” DeGeneres said in a statement.
The special will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73.
DeGeneres addressed the show’s “devastating” end during a recent stop on her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour .
“What else can I tell you?” she said, per Rolling Stone . “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”
She joked that it wasn’t the first time her career had taken such a blow. “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business,” she said, referring to when she came out in the ’90s and her ABC sitcom was subsequently canceled . “Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”
But she later admitted that this level of public scrutiny was “a whole different thing.”
“This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful,” she said. “I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal… I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”
A premiere date for DeGeneres’ new comedy special has not yet been announced.
Netflix’s VP of of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats, Robbie Praw, praised the former talk show host and comedian ahead of her new special.
“There is nobody quite like Ellen,” Praw said in a statement. “She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can’t wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year.”
