Journey

Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.

During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .

The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.

Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.

With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.

"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)

This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery.  Listen here.

"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)

The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.

"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)

The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.

"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)

Journey "Faithfully"

The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”

"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)

Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.

"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)

The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.

"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)

If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.

"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)

Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.

"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)

Journey "Don't Stop Believin'" (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)

More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.

"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)

Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

Behind the Melody: Unraveling Journey’s Timeless Classic, “Feeling That Way”

A Journey Through Time: Rediscovering “Feeling That Way”

Journey, the iconic rock band formed in San Francisco in 1973, has stolen the hearts of fans worldwide for decades with their anthemic hits and powerful performances. Known for chart-topping tracks like “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Open Arms,” the band consists of Neal Schon on guitar , Ross Valory on bass, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, Steve Smith on drums, and Arnel Pineda on vocals. Journey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, solidifying their legacy as one of the greatest rock bands in history.

“Feeling That Way,” a track from their 1978 album “Infinity,” showcases the band’s versatility and penchant for crafting memorable tunes. Featuring the vocal talents of then-frontman Steve Perry and keyboardist Gregg Rolie, the song beautifully melds harmonies with a driving beat, highlighting the depth and range of Journey’s musical prowess. While Journey’s lineup has changed over the years, with Perry leaving in 1998 and Rolie departing in 1980, the essence of the band’s sound remains as powerful as ever. However, some critics argue that their newer material doesn’t quite capture the magic of their earlier work, which many fans consider to be the band’s creative peak. Nevertheless, “Feeling That Way” stands as a testament to Journey’s enduring impact on the world of rock music and serves as a nostalgic reminder of the band’s exceptional artistry.

A Visual Journey: The Music Video for “Feeling That Way”

Surprisingly, there isn’t an official music video for Journey’s classic hit “Feeling That Way.” However, the absence of an official video has led fans to create their own visual interpretations of the song over the years. These fan-made videos have given a platform for Journey’s followers to showcase their creativity and love for the band.

One notable fan-made video for “Feeling That Way” is a tribute to Journey’s lead vocalist, Steve Perry. The video masterfully compiles clips of Perry’s performances from various concerts and appearances, highlighting his powerful stage presence and signature vocal range. In addition to showcasing Perry’s talent, the video also includes footage of the band performing together, showcasing their dynamic chemistry and musicianship. The visual journey it provides serves as a worthy homage to the band and its iconic lead singer.

Another popular fan-made video takes a more conceptual approach, pairing the song with footage from classic films and television shows. This video taps into the nostalgic feel of “Feeling That Way” by using visuals from various eras to create a dreamy, time-traveling atmosphere. As the song plays, clips of iconic movie scenes enhance the emotions evoked by the lyrics, making for a compelling visual experience that complements the song perfectly.

Given that “Feeling That Way” was released in 1978, well before the rise of MTV and the golden era of music videos, it’s no surprise that Journey didn’t create an official video for the song. However, the imaginative and inventive fan-made videos have more than made up for this, allowing fans to engage with the song in a visual format and connecting with the timeless appeal of Journey’s music.

Overall, while there may not be an official music video for “Feeling That Way,” the fan-made tributes showcase the creativity and love that Journey’s fans have for the band and their music, delivering a visual experience that remains true to the spirit of the song. Diving Into the Musical Depths of “Feeling That Way”

“Feeling That Way,” a standout track from Journey’s 1978 album “Infinity,” is an exemplary showcase of the band’s musical prowess and creative versatility. Structurally, the song is written in the key of D major and follows a classic verse-chorus format. The verses predominantly feature a chord progression of Dmaj7 – Gmaj7 – Em7 – A7sus4 – A7, while the choruses shift to a more straightforward D – G – Bm – A progression. This contrast in chord structures between the verse and chorus adds a sense of dynamic tension and release, which is further emphasized by the song’s tempo of approximately 130 beats per minute (BPM), giving it a lively and energetic feel.

Delving deeper into the track’s musical intricacies, one cannot ignore the masterful interplay between the rhythm section and the melodic instruments. In particular, the bass guitar and drums work in tandem to provide a solid foundation for the soaring guitar riffs and catchy keyboard melodies that characterize the song. The use of syncopation and intricate fills by the drummer adds an extra layer of complexity to the track, while the guitarist’s tasteful solos and delicate arpeggios serve to highlight the song’s underlying harmonic structure. Furthermore, the vocal harmonies between lead singer Steve Perry and keyboardist Gregg Rolie add a rich, textured quality to the track, making “Feeling That Way” a prime example of Journey’s exceptional musicianship and collaborative spirit. Accolades and Timeless Influence

“Feeling That Way,” released in 1978, may not have racked up the awards directly, but it has undoubtedly contributed to Journey’s legacy as a classic rock powerhouse. The song, written by Gregg Rolie, Aynsley Dunbar, and Neal Schon, was part of Journey’s fourth studio album, “Infinity,” which was certified 3x Platinum in the United States. “Feeling That Way” has remained a fan favorite and a staple in the band’s live performances, often paired with “Anytime” in their setlist for that seamless transition between the two tracks. This testament to Journey’s timeless appeal proves that “Feeling That Way” is an integral part of the band’s successful catalog.

Over the years, “Feeling That Way” has been featured in various media, further solidifying its status as a classic rock anthem. This song has appeared in the hit TV show “The Sopranos” in Season 6, Episode 17, titled “Walk Like A Man,” and has had its fair share of cover versions by aspiring musicians and Journey enthusiasts. However, no official covers have been released by notable artists or bands in the industry. The track’s legacy lies in its long-lasting appreciation and resonance with fans and audiences alike, proving that “Feeling That Way” is an essential piece of rock history. Charting the Journey of “Feeling That Way”

“Feeling That Way” was released as a single by Journey on April 1978, featuring as the second track on the band’s fourth studio album, “Infinity.” While the song itself didn’t achieve significant chart success on its own, it’s important to note that it was often paired with “Anytime” in radio airplay, creating a medley that resonated with listeners.

When “Feeling That Way” and “Anytime” were combined as a double-sided single, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on May 6, 1978. Although it started at position #81, the single gradually climbed the chart, reaching its peak position of #57 on June 10, 1978. It remained on the chart for a total of 10 weeks, showcasing the staying power of these two songs, even if they didn’t break into the top 50.

As one of the first songs to feature Steve Perry on lead vocals, “Feeling That Way” marks an important transition in Journey’s musical style, moving towards their more recognizable sound. While it may not have been a chart-topping hit, it did pave the way for future successes the band would achieve throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.

In terms of chart trivia, despite not reaching the top 50, the medley of “Feeling That Way” and “Anytime” managed to outperform the album’s lead single, “Wheel in the Sky,” which only reached #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This demonstrates the combined strength of these tracks when played together and how they resonated with the audience.

To sum up, while “Feeling That Way” may not have been a standalone chart sensation, its partnership with “Anytime” resulted in a memorable and widely-enjoyed medley that still managed to make its mark on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Moreover, it signaled the beginning of a new era for Journey, setting the stage for the band’s future chart triumphs. The Mastermind Behind “Feeling That Way”: Gregg Rolie

A crucial architect in Journey’s sonic world, Gregg Rolie is the composer responsible for crafting the unforgettable song “Feeling That Way”. Besides his work with Journey, Rolie is known for his artistic contributions to the legendary rock band Santana. As the co-founder and original lead vocalist, Rolie was the driving force behind some of Santana’s most beloved classics, such as “Black Magic Woman,” “Evil Ways,” and “Oye Como Va.” This multi-talented musician’s passion and skill for blending rock, jazz, blues, and Latin elements into an electrifying fusion, undeniably made a significant impact on the music world, earning him a well-deserved place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both Santana and Journey. A Deeper Dive into the Lyrics of “Feeling That Way” by Journey

When the summer’s gone She’ll be there standing by the light Once she’s been to where she’s gone to She should know wrong from right

Is it all on my mind Or is this love at first sight? Please don’t make it wrong Just stay for the night

All I want to do is make love to you Say you will You want me too All I want to do is make love to you Say you will You want me too Now the feeling is beginning to grow And the meaning is something you only know If you believe it Take my hand And I’ll take your heart, come on

The lyrics of “Feeling That Way” by Journey delve into the complexities of love and desire, reflective of the late 1970s, when the song was released. In 1978, the year “Feeling That Way” came out, the world was experiencing a significant cultural shift. The sexual revolution was in full swing, and the feminist movement was progressing, leading to the widespread questioning of traditional gender roles and societal expectations around love and relationships.

Listening closely to the lyrics, we can see that Journey’s “Feeling That Way” captures the spirit of the time, with its focus on the pursuit of love and finding a true connection. The verses echo the uncertainty and vulnerability that comes with new relationships, asking questions like, “Is it all on my mind or is this love at first sight?” and “Where does true love begin?” The chorus reinforces the song’s overarching theme of love and desire, with the repeated plea, “All I want to do is make love to you.”

The lyrics also touch on the fleeting nature of love and happiness, with lines like “When the summer’s gone, she’ll be there standing by the light.” This sense of transience aligns with the 1970s’ broader societal shift towards valuing personal fulfillment and self-discovery, as well as the growing awareness that even seemingly perfect relationships can be temporary.

Overall, “Feeling That Way” captures the essence of love and relationships in the late 1970s, shedding light on the emotional landscape of that era. Journey’s lyrics resonate with the listener, transporting them back to a time when searching for love and grappling with desire were paramount concerns, and societal norms were shifting to forge a new path.

The ‘My Way’ Story: The Song’s Unlikely Journey From France to David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Las Vegas and the Super Bowl

My Way

Las Vegas was built on glitter, risk and razzle dazzle and the organizers of this year’s Super Bowl were wise to pay tribute to the man who arguably played the biggest role (besides Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel) in making the Sin City what it is today: Frank Sinatra , whose Rat Pack-era residencies defined Vegas in the 1950s, along with his best-known song, “My Way.”

Popular on Variety

Enter David Bowie.

In 1968, the pre-“Space Oddity” Bowie was a struggling London singer-songwriter who’d released several singles and an album to underwhelming success. He had already tried on several guises (mod, psychedelic pop, novelty songs like “The Laughing Gnome”) in his futile-to-date ploys for stardom.

Bowie’s then-publisher, David Platz, worked with another music publisher, Geoffrey Heath, who held limited options for the British rights to “Comme d’habitude.” When Heath asked Platz for a lyricist to adapt the song into English, the latter offered up Bowie. His attempt, titled “Even a Fool Learns to Love,” even featured a nod to his own 1967 ballad, “When I Live My Dream.”

Those updated lyrics had been written by none other than legendary American crooner Paul Anka, who’d heard the French original during a vacation in the south of France. He negotiated the rights to the song, acquiring its adaptation, recording, and publishing rights for one dollar , according to an interview he gave Terry Gross during a 2005 episode of NPR’s “Fresh Air.”

Immediately thinking of Sinatra — his cadence, manner of speak-singing and tough demeanor — Anka set about writing new lyrics, shifting its melodic structure slightly. In December 1968, with producer Sonny Burke and arranger Don Costa, Sinatra recorded Anka’s newly-minted “My Way” in one take and released it through his Reprise label in three months later. While the song only reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969, it has since become as iconic as the singer himself.

Anka told this writer last year, “All the people I worked with after Frank and ‘My Way’ said, ‘We must write another one just like it.’ But it doesn’t work like that; there’s only room for one.

“The content of that lyric hit everybody,” he continued. “Back then, I saw that we were getting into the ‘Me-Me-Me’ generation. I was only 26 — boys, scientifically, do not become adults until after they’re 30 — but somehow, it hit everybody. People get married to it, get buried to it; guys write me letters from death row to say they identify with it. I’ve sung ‘My Way’ for Putin, for Trump. Narcissism runs rampant, but when it’s under control, this is the perfect song in terms of wrapping up one’s life. We’re all ego-driven. Read Freud enough and you get that.”

However, the song had not heard the last from David Bowie. The success of Sinatra’s version “really made me angry for so long — for about a year,” he told Parkinson. “Eventually I thought, ‘I can write something as big as that, and I’ll write one that sounds a bit like it. So I did ‘Life On Mars?,’ which was my sort of revenge trip on ‘My Way.’” (Ironically, “Life on Mars?” would follow a similar decades-long road to iconic status.) Bowie acknowledged the influence on the back cover of his 1971 “Hunky Dory” album, with “Inspired by Frankie” handwritten next to the song’s title.

At around the same time, Elvis Presley, riding the success of his 1968 comeback via the televised “Elvis” special, was hot to return to live performance. He helped open Las Vegas’ then-new International Hotel, and began performing “My Way” in concert during the early 1970s. By the time of January 1973’s satellite-televised live concert, “Aloha from Hawaii,” he had effectively made the song his own, with a haughty performance tailor-made for his lower register.

Of course, the most unique — and unlikely — cover of “My Way” came courtesy of Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious in an f-bomb-filled punk version featured in the group’s swan-song film, “The Great Rock and Roll Swindle.” Vicious sneers his way through the song while gunning down elegantly clad members of the audience (including, in an eerie foreshadowing, his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, whom he was later accused of murdering just months before his own death in 1979). A decade later, that version was used by Martin Scorsese to close-out his bloody gangster flick, “Goodfellas.”

That version has become a kind of template for a long succession of deeply irreverent covers of iconic songs.

“I was somewhat destabilized by the Sex Pistols’ version,” Anka told the Telegraph in 2007. “It was kind of curious, but I felt like [Vicious] was sincere about it.”

Among the countless versions of the song that have been performed along its journey to the Super Bowl this weekend, Anka himself recorded it on five occasions, including one in Spanish with Julio Iglesias (“A Mi Manera”) and even in a duet with Jon Bon Jovi. It was also covered by Yuzo Kayama, a vocalist known as “the Japanese Frank Sinatra.”

The song had an unlikely postscript in 1978 when the BBC discovered a demo tape and typewritten lyrics for Bowie’s version, “Even a Fool Learns to Love” — long thought to be lost — in the possession of Ken Pitt, the singer’s 1968-era manager, while filming a documentary program on the song . Pitt even showed the BBC a self-made video to “Even a Fool Learns to Love” where Bowie superimposed the song over a previously filmed promotional clip.

However, for all that, Sinatra himself came to regard his signature song with his legendary disdain. “He always thought that it was self-serving and self-indulgent,” his daughter Tina told the BBC . “He didn’t like it. That song stuck and he couldn’t get it off his shoe.”

About the author

Sarah Cart was raised and educated in New York and New England. As a freelance writer, her work appeared in multiple local publications while she and her husband, Ben, raised four sons in northeastern Ohio. Upon becoming empty nesters, the two moved to the Florida Keys. Then in 2017, Ben was diagnosed with a degenerative autoimmune disorder and over time, their relationship evolved to that of patient and caregiver, but by the dawn of 2020, Ben was dying. Ten days into the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, his kidneys crashed, his heart was failing, and he ended up in the ICU at Cleveland Clinic Weston (FL).

Sarah’s memoir, On My Way Back to You, is more than the chronicle of Ben’s journey to death’s doorstep and back. It’s a love story about resiliency and the power of community, a roadmap through some of life’s greatest challenges and the determination of two people who relied on grit, grace, and endless patience to find their way back to each other.

Having sheltered in place in Florida for the entirety of 2020, in the wake of Ben’s undergoing miraculous lifesaving measures, they have been afforded the unanticipated gift of a future and, more than ever before, relish time spent with family and friends.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

In the way or on the way ?

If something or someone is in the way or in my/his/our way , it is in the space which someone needs for a particular movement or action:

She can’t do her dance because the table is in the way . Can you help me move it?

We use on the way or on my/his/our way (to ) when we talk about the route, direction or path to somewhere:

We could leave early and have breakfast on the way . (during our journey to somewhere)
I was on my way to Peter’s house when I met him in the street. (I was going to Peter’s house when I met him)

We can use on the way to (plus a noun or an - ing form of a verb) to mean ‘close to’ doing or completing something:

I understand that "I am on my way" means I am just about to start the journey and "I am on the way" means I am in the middle of the journey. Is that correct ?

32000BTUGasGrill

They both can mean both things. In my American English experience, though, one usually says "On my way" to refer to both of those meanings, and "On the way" to refer to something in the path of your journey.

Hello Mr X Senior. Welcome to the forum! Your analysis is almost correct. In fact (at least in British English) you could use either expression in the event that you are in the course of your journey. "I am on my way to New York" might signify you are about to leave, but equally you might already be en route - if, for example, you started in Paris and are waiting for a connecting flight in London. In those circumstances, you might equally say "I am on the way to New York". Both are correct. If someone says to you, "Come on, are you coming?", the correct answer would be "Yes, wait a minute: I'm on my way".

As for what has already been mentioned, I want to get further information about "on the way": " Plans for a new 30-metre pole are presently under way" In this sentence, do they mean that "under way " =something in the path of your journey? So, I wondered if you could help me figure out what does the sentence mean!

Here "under way" still means "moving forward," but in this context, that does not refer to physical motion. A plan moves forward as it is completed, reviewed, revised, approved, and put into action.

Port Orange finally has a KBBQ at Hanwoo in the old Mellow Mushroom on Taylor Road. They're still in a bit of a soft opening phase but let me tell you that did not reflect in the service which was spot on. The only tell is that they were out of some items - corn dog, chicken wings, marinated roast beef, bean sprouts. Hopefully they'll work out sourcing issues soon. I eat a lot of KBBQ down in Orlando and this is a great entry level place if you've never tried it before. The seasoning is toned down so nothings overly spicy or strongly flavored. There are plenty of "recognizable" meat options and things like butter garlic shrimp and chicken teriyaki for less adventurous eaters. I guess my point is it's good, but it's safe good. I'll give them huge props for absolutely tender and flavorful lamb and gator - two meats I've never seen at a KBBQ before. But the kimchi and gochujang were mild. Chopsticks and dipping sauces are upon request. While the banchan are unlimited they come in tiny single-serve dishes which says to me they're afraid of waste because people might not like them (the table behind us was adamantly against even trying kimchi). The place underwent an amazing transformation and it's clean, modern, and trendy/romantic without feeling pretentious or stuffy. Despite a hot grill at your table the temperature was very comfortable. Also gotta love a front desk that's a giant bull sculpture. I do hope they'll embrace the K of KBBQ a bit more as time goes on but I'll definitely be back because it was all quality ingredients and great staff. Also I absolutely adore the cow serving boards!

My husband and I just went to Hanwoo for opening day (at my husband's insistence). And oh my goodness, was it delicious! We have been to several different AYCE Korean BBQ places in the past, and this one definitely has some of the best quality of meat. The filet was extremely tender, and the New York strips was delicious. The beef bulgogi had great flavor and was also very tender. As soon as I bit into the corn dog, there was an awesome cheese pull. The cheese was sweet, and the hot dog was yummy. The hot dog itself was made of fish, but it did not taste fishy at all. The corn cheese had the same kind of cheese, so I was very happy I also tried the beef kimbap, which was filling but filled with fresh and pickled veggies. It made for a good bite, especially dipped in sauce. My husband had the chicken gyoza, and he liked it a lot too. The unlimited sides were awesome! My favorites were the radish, potato and egg salad, and spicy cucumber. Finally, for drinks, I got the Hanwoo Delight while my husband got the Mellow "Mango" (they did not have mango yet, so they replaced it with peach flavor). the fruity drink was our favorite! The yogurt one, I found, grew stronger with yogurt flavor as you drink it with your meal. All in all, very happy and will definitely be returning!

Hanwoo Korean BBQ for the Win Service, atmosphere, cost, food and beverages were all excellent! We are very happy that this restaurant has opened so close to home. We are a bit of food snobs and are generally very picky especially since eating out seems like a luxury anymore. It's hard to find a local place that hits all the marks. Fresh, delicious with a flare! Run don't walk and go see for yourself Very happy Customers. Shout out to Stephen our server! We also spoke to the lovely owner who seems to have her head on a swivel making sure everyone was happy and taken care of. Even if you don't normally eat this type of cuisine you will be pleasantly surprised!

Some of the BEST Korean BBQ I've ever had. Huge portions and everything is obviously made in house. Five stars.

journey on my way

I use to live in South Korea for 2years .It's not a real Korean restaurant! Bartender doesn't know what is Chamisul soju server doesn't know what Gochujang is ! During the lunch we were asking for additional rice and extra portion of bulgogi meat and spicy cucumbers in 15 minutes he came back and asking again if we need anything like he was never asked ‍ Customers not allowed to manage the fire while cooking by that all the meat got burned! Pork belly was skin ON which is not supposed to be!‍ Anything you asking takes 15 min to get it As for the mushrooms, I thought that they were waiting until they grew to bring them to me. Very slow! It wasn't busy like less than half of place it was Saturday afternoon The food is regular cookie cutter.. Be careful with their lettuce seems they not washed them at all as you can see on the photo. And lots of other unpleasant details that I've noticed. I feel nauseous now.. Be informed and good luck!

To Create a Greener Future, the West Can’t Ignore China

journey on my way

Fighting climate change is a promising area for engagement between Western companies and China. However, geopolitical strains, the disruption of business relationships by the Covid pandemic, and domestic Chinese policies all make engagement complex. In this article the authors examine the complexities of the current climate-change opportunities in China and present practical strategies for businesses ready to enter the market.

There is a twofold opportunity, they explain. First, China offers a vast market for Western-developed solutions. The Chinese government has set ambitious targets, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. That goal creates significant opportunities for firms with cutting-edge technologies. Second, businesses have an opportunity to integrate China’s own advances in climate-related technology.

The authors go on to outline four strategies, all of which involve partnering in some way. They advise companies to make sustainability a global theme, to join or form coalitions to find safe spaces for technological development, to forge partnerships with local companies for market access, and to insource technology.

Four ways for companies to safely engage

Idea in Brief

The opportunity.

Fighting climate change is a promising area for engagement between Western companies and China. After all, China is responsible for 27% of global emissions and offers a vast market for green tech.

The Challenge

Geopolitical strains, the disruption of business relationships by the Covid pandemic, and domestic Chinese policies all make engagement complex.

The Solution

To engage effectively with China, consider forming coalitions for safe technological development, forging local partnerships for market access, and insourcing innovative technology.

In the current geopolitical landscape, marked by escalating tensions between Western nations and China, it’s a challenge to identify potential areas of collaboration between East and West that would yield mutual benefits and foster trust. But fighting climate change is one. Climate change is a problem that affects every nation, and it cannot be solved without China’s involvement because the country contributes 27% of global emissions, according to the World Bank.

Navigating the on-premises to cloud migration journey for your Oracle Databases

journey on my way

Which way is north?

Quite often when we are tasked with a migration from either old hardware to new, from one database platform to another, and particularly, from an on-premises deployment to the cloud, the task can be daunting. Finding out what options are available can be just as challenging as the migration itself.

This blog will highlight a few technical and business considerations that you will find useful on your migration journey to the Oracle Cloud with a focus on:

  • Discovery and capture of where you are today
  • Knowing the available OCI database platforms and services
  • Licensing models and Support Rewards
  • Review of migration services as your next step

Discover and capture current environments

Having a good handle on the platforms that support your Oracle Databases, such as operating systems, Oracle Database editions and options, is critical in helping you determine what OCI database services will meet your needs. This information will help you navigate to where you need to dig further.

Things to consider:

Capture key details in a spreadsheet. Here’s an example or use the Oracle Cloud Migration Advisor spreadsheet.

Review current Workloads and Processes

While having a good handle on your database environment is critical, knowing how you are using those database editions and options is just as important and will help you identify functionality you will need in choosing your target database service.

For any given application and Oracle Database you are looking to migrate:

Are you looking to reduce operational costs?

  • Faster and automated deployments
  • Automated operational management
  • Less databases options to purchase and manage

Are you looking to accomplish more?

  • Leverage OCI managed service features as autoscaling and administrative functions
  • Gain benefits from OCI provisioning speed
  • Gain database functionality and options based on deployment model

Are you looking to reduce risk in managing your Oracle Database platform?

  • Ensure timely Oracle patching
  • Leverage automation to reduce human error
  • HA capabilities to increase application up-time

Are you looking to maintain same level of control in the cloud that you do on-premises?

  • What level of DBA access does the application require?
  • Is operational- or application-level support required?
  • Is it an application requiring little to no DDL changes or internal management?

Do you require “root” access of the database server?

  • Do your ADMINs require the ability to install OS based agents, security tools, auditing features? Splunk or other 3rd party agents?

Do you require “DBA” access in the Oracle Database?

  • Do you require the ability to create tablespaces, directories, DB Links?
  • Do you perform tablespace refreshes as part of a refresh cycle?

What functionality do you use to support your application releases?

  • Do you leverage high availability functionality such as online Table Reorgs or Index Rebuilds, or Flashback?
  • Do applications, whether homegrown or commercial, invoke DBA level actions, such as creating Tables, Indexes or Tablespaces?

Landing on the appropriate cloud database service

The Oracle Database portfolio has an abundance of capabilities and offers four primary databases to choose from. The Oracle Service Advisor tool helps you reduce the time to find the correct database cloud service by checking off your requirements, such as deployment location (ie: Oracle, Customer site, or Azure,) usage, capacity, availability requirements, compliance, automated operations required and more.

The four cloud deployment choices and Oracle Databases include:

Standalone BM or VM Deployments ( Bare Metal , Virtual Machine )

This is an Oracle infrastructure service ( IaaS ) that will stand up bare metal (BM) or Virtual Machines (VM) hardware. Once deployed, customers can install their Oracle Database software and options on the BM or VM infrastructure as if on-premises. This deployment option provides the most hand-on control at both the OS and Database level.

Oracle Database Base Database Service ( Base Database Service )

This is an Oracle Database service ( DBaaS ) that deploys both infrastructure and Oracle Database software, creates your databases, schedules backups, and does patching. When deploying using this model, you will get to choose the VM shapes (chip, OS, and storage) that your Oracle Database software will be deployed to and the version and edition of the Oracle Database, allowing you to deploy in “minutes” rather than days.

This database service is offered with:

  • Oracle Database as a Service running Standard Edition
  • Oracle Database as a Service running Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle Database as a Service running Enterprise Edition High Performance
  • Oracle Database as a Service running Enterprise Edition Extreme Performance

Here, “Edition” truly means Oracle Database edition when looking at Standard Edition vs Enterprise edition. When it comes to the three Enterprise Edition deployments, they are geared at the options the software is deployed with. For details on available options in each edition, see Enterprise Edition Options .

Oracle Exadata Database Service ( Exadata Database Service )

This is an Oracle Database service that deploys the Oracle Database software on Oracle Exadata engineered system. This is geared at those enterprise workloads demanding the highest performance and the benefits of a database service. This option is available both in OCI, Azure, as well as on-premises with Exadata Database Cloud@Customer.

The base offering comes with 2 database servers and 3 storage servers. Compute and storage servers can be added independently. You can configure 2 to 32 Database servers, each with 4 to 252 OCPUs and 3 to 64 storage servers.

Oracle Autonomous Database Service ( Autonomous Database )

This is an Oracle Database service ( ADB ) which eliminates virtually all the complexities and challenges of deploying and managing an Oracle Database environment. This option eliminates the need for System Admin’s and greatly reduces the workload on Oracle DBA’s.

This service provides the ability to quickly provision databases for Online Transaction Processing (ATP), Data Warehouse (ADW), or JSON workloads and comes preconfigured with “best practice” parameter settings. These are great for third party, line of business applications that do not require heavy DBA interaction.

This service can be deployed as:

  • Oracle Autonomous Serverless
  • Oracle Autonomous Dedicated Deployments
  • Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer

FAQ link for Autonomous Database offering is included in the additional resources section.

License models

Each of the four Oracle Database deployment models has a license included and bring your own license (BYOL) option to allow customers to leverage existing investments and transfer them to the cloud.

BYOL is a great opportunity for customers not just to migrate as is but migrate and modernize. For many on premises deployments, it’s a big improvement to upgrade into the latest Oracle Database innovations and the economics of a fully managed service.

As an example, customers owning Standard Edition licenses can transfer their existing licenses to an Autonomous Database service and run the Oracle Enterprise Edition – Extreme Performance database software with all its options on the Exadata hardware platform. Beyond gaining increased database functionality, BYOL subscriptions have discounted pricing. In the SE to Autonomous case, the hourly fees are 76% lower.

For more information:

  • FAQ's for BYOL models
  • Standard Edition to Autonomous migration program

Oracle Support Rewards

Oracle offers additional economic incentives to migrate your licenses to the cloud. The Oracle Support Rewards program reduces support fees by paying down your tech software license bill for every dollar spent in OCI. As you consume more OCI services, you accrue more support rewards and can even reduce your support bill down to zero. (taxes excluded)

Oracle Migration Services

If all this still seems overwhelming, you are not alone. Because of this, Oracle offers migration support through Oracle Cloud Lift Services .  Cloud Lift Services provide cloud engineers for planning, architecting, prototyping, and managing cloud migrations. Clients will work with a dedicated group of OCI experts to assist from inception to go-live, including assessment design, prototyping, migration, and management.

Migration Services and Tools

Part of knowing which way’s north is knowing the roads that lead there as well. While this Blog’s focus was not methods of migration, I would be remiss if I did not whet your appetite for what comes next, determining the means and methods for your migrations.

Our Oracle Database Cloud Migration  web page is the place to start for “all things migration.” Here you can get a complete overview of migration solutions, tools, and resources, whether you are looking for assistance and automation with your upgrades or will be doing them in-house.

There are two main sections contained on this site. The “Getting Started” section outlines the process of planning, preparation, execution and validation and the other provides details on “Migration Methods,” including automated and do-it-yourself migration workflows. See how you can benefit from the automated methods: OCI Database Migration, Zero Downtime Migration, and the Enterprise Manager Workbench.

In the Getting Started section you will find things like:

  • The Plan tab for resources to assess your database estate. Here are three free tools that provide insight and options for your migration strategy:
  • Estate Explorer  catalogs and evaluates your database estate, suggesting alternatives for lowest TCO cloud operations and prioritizes databases to migrate based on effort required.
  • Database Service Advisor helps you choose the most appropriate Oracle Database cloud service based on specific technical requirements.
  • Migration Methods Advisor prioritizes the best migration methods for your specific source and target database configuration and operating requirements.
  • The Prepare  tab for resources such as our Cloud Premigration Advisor Tool aka CPAT to help analyze source databases and suggest preparation steps for the selected target cloud service.
  • The Validate tab provides solutions to help reduce the risk associated with migrating your databases. Here you will find links to Enterprise Manager Migration Workbench and Golden Gates Veridata to help you manage the accuracy and completeness of your migration efforts.
  • The Migration Workflow  tab describes the online or offline migration options available to each database target described above.
  • The OCI Database Migration tab describes the free OCI Database Migration service.
  • The Zero Downtime Migration tab describes the free toolkit for executing all migration methods.
  • The Enterprise Manager tab describes the Enterprise Manager Workbench that is an included feature of Enterprise Manager.

Whether it’s knowing the direction you need to go, what options and choices you have, regardless of how simple or complex your migration needs are, Oracle is here to help every step of the way.

Knowing where you are starting is critical as you head out to migrate your on-premises Oracle Databases to OCI. Hardware and software inventory, database editions, versions and options in use, database functionality used all need to be identified and captured.

Once you know where you are starting, knowing that there are four database services available to you will help you know where you need to start and then dig further once you determine what option best suites your requirements.

Understanding license models as well as the perks Oracle offers can greatly help you further leverage your Oracle assets, whether currently owned licenses or Oracle provided resources.

No matter what your needs are, OCI and Azure have a place for your Oracle Databases.

Why every entrepreneur needs an exit strategy.

When I began my journey, selling my business was the last thing on my mind.

When I began my entrepreneurial journey, selling my business was the last thing on my mind. However, as time passed, I understood the importance of an exit strategy for ensuring sustainability and success. Here's my story.

The Initial Phase: Starting and Growing

As a serial entrepreneur, nothing thrills me more than starting and growing a business. The satisfaction that comes from seeing an idea transform into a thriving enterprise is unparalleled. However, like many entrepreneurs, I was caught in a cycle of creating a business, nurturing it to success, and then losing interest when things became mundane.

The Problem: The Fading Passion

The pattern was clear. I'd be all in during the early days, driven by excitement and passion. However, as the years passed, the repetitive, managerial aspects would kick in, leading to a gradual decline in enthusiasm. As my interest waned, the business would suffer, eventually prompting me to move on to another venture. This cycle was exhausting, and I knew something had to change.

The Revelation: There's More Than One Way Out

It was during a funding round in 2020 that I had an epiphany. While discussing my plans to take my business global with potential investors, I was repeatedly asked, "What's your exit strategy?" To my surprise, I didn't have one.

For a long time, I had the misconception that no one would be interested in acquiring my business. Why? Because I considered my business as "boring." However, as I soon learned, stable and straightforward businesses are precisely what investors seek: low-risk, easy-to-manage entities that promise consistent returns.

Boeing Whistleblower Will Testify Before Senate Today—Here’s What To Know

At least 20 dead in uae and oman after record rainfall causes severe flooding, u.s. will impose new sanctions on iran’s drone program after attack on israel, shifting perspective: from entrepreneur to investor.

Those pivotal conversations in 2020 marked a turning point in my entrepreneurial journey. They shifted my mindset from viewing myself as a business owner to an investor. I realized that not only was I the main investor in my business, but my business was also a valuable asset. The transformation in my mindset was profound. I transitioned from "I am my business" to “I own this asset”, recognizing my venture as a distinct asset, separate from my identity.

The Takeaway

Every entrepreneur should have an exit strategy. Whether it's a sale, a merger, or a succession plan, understanding your endgame can provide direction, offer motivation, and, most importantly, ensure you maximize your returns.

If you're an entrepreneur with a business generating over 2M in annual revenue and haven't yet considered an exit strategy, it's time to start. After all, being prepared for the end often means making the most of the journey.

To a brighter, freer entrepreneurial future!

Celebrating diversity and empowerment: A Black Muslim woman's journey in London

Safeya banner

Dear prospective study abroad students,

I am writing to share with you my incredible study abroad experience in London, and how it has impacted me as a Black Muslim woman. When I first arrived in London, I was greeted with a sense of excitement and nervousness. As someone who didn't often see people who looked like me back home, I was eager to immerse myself in a more diverse environment.

My identity as a Black Muslim woman influenced my study abroad experience in a profound way. I was drawn to the large Black Muslim population in London and made it a goal to connect with others who shared similar experiences and backgrounds. This led me to strike up conversations with strangers and make connections that I will cherish forever. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to take risks that I wouldn't have considered back home.

"Being chosen as a Global Access Ambassador and receiving the scholarship allowed me to fully immerse myself in this amazing opportunity, and I will forever cherish the memories and connections I made during my time abroad."

Throughout my time in London, I gained valuable insights about the host country and its culture. I was amazed by the diversity and inclusivity of the city. From the international food scene to the rich history and endless activities, London has something for everyone. I learned so much about myself during my time abroad, from overcoming unexpected challenges to embracing new experiences with an open mind.

I highly recommend London to prospective study abroad students, especially those of color who may be hesitant due to concerns about discrimination. London is a welcoming and diverse city that celebrates different cultures and backgrounds. It is a great place to immerse yourself in a new environment and make lifelong memories.

In conclusion, my study abroad experience in London has had a profound impact on me. It has shaped me into a more confident and open-minded individual, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have explored such a vibrant and diverse city. Being chosen as a Global Access Ambassador and receiving the scholarship allowed me to fully immerse myself in this amazing opportunity, and I will forever cherish the memories and connections I made during my time abroad.

I encourage all prospective study abroad students to take the leap and embark on this life-changing journey. You never know what you may discover about yourself and the world around you.

Best wishes,
