Only The Young by Journey

journey only the young

Songfacts®:

  • According to the liner notes of Journey's Time3 compilation, this song was originally recorded for Journey's 1983 Frontiers album but pulled off at the last minute. The song was finally released as a single off the soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest , which also features Madonna's " Crazy For You ."
  • Through the Make-A-Wish foundation, Journey hooked up with 16-year-old Kenny Sykaluk, who was suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, and played the song for him in his hospital room. Sykaluk, who was a huge Journey fan, died the night, leaving the band deeply affected. "As soon as I stepped out of that hospital room I lost it," said Perry. "Nurses had to take me to a room by myself." Inspired by Sykaluk, Journey used "Only The Young" as the concert opener throughout the Raised On Radio tour.

  • Kerri Journey use to rock with Steve as lead. New singer is good. But he is a substitute. Too bad all the old pain will not heal for those 3 guys. They are adults I think.
  • Scott from Sc Journey is my favorite band and this is my favorite Journey song. I could listen to it over and over.

Journey – Only The Young – The Story Behind the Song

October 11, 2020 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Journey Only the Young

Journey’s Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon wrote the song ‘Only The Young’ in 1983 and sold it to another one of our favorite ’80s bands, Scandal . Scandal released it on their 1984 Warrior album. Journey also recorded and released the song as a single in 1985, and Journey’s version was included on the soundtrack to the 1985 movie ‘Vision Quest’. Scandal was actually given a large settlement in the legal aftermath of Journey releasing the song themselves.

Journey’s version reached number nine on the Hot 100 charts in March 1985. Scandal didn’t release the song as a single.

The song had a tremendous impact on a 16 year-old boy and subsequently changed Cain, Perry, and Schon’s lives forever:

The first individual outside the band to hear the song was sixteen-year-old Kenny Sykaluk of Rocky River, Ohio, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son’s terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside in Cleveland, Ohio at the request of the Make a Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said, “As soon as I walked out of the hospital room, I lost it. Nurses had to take me to a room by myself.” On the band’s episode of VH1’s Behind the Music, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that “children should not have to live with that kind of pain”. Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny’s death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on Radio Tour. via Wikipedia

This song apperead in the movie Vision Quest, it's about a high school wrestler, and it's one of my favorite Journey's song.

to jatuab- you should feel that way. This song stuck so well with me when I was 16 (1990). Its the most awesome time in your life. When I hear this song today at age 33 I still remember those incredible times.

@cropduster I completely agree! And of course I would because I was in my 1st "puppy love" relationship 1986/87 @ 16 1/2 yrs old. Journey's Greatest Hits Album brings me to my knees (emotionally not literally) no matter which song. Teen years are soooo awesome & packed with grand memories.. (For most..) May we all be able to remember our memories & smile about them in the future. :o)

i like how there are 1-15 comments on every song except Faithfully and Seperant ways with like 40 and Dont stop believin' which has like 140

Journey is the best band 2 listen 2 wen ur in the middle or the end of a relationship and makes u realli sad like that episode of just shoot me were they are listenin 2 it and cryin over Xs

I like this song, though I liked Scandal's version a little more. It rocked a little harder.

@DarkPoo Thanks for mentioning this as I have never heard that version and I'm going to check it out now.. However? Journey's Greatest Hits album holds WAY to much meaning and memories for me to ever think another version of this song (let alone any other) is better. Just my personal pref. Thx again!

@DarkPoo Hey there.. Back again to say that I did really enjoy Scandal's version! I always did enjoy Scandal which is why I decided to check it out & thrilled I did. I also found out & figured I'd share the info. (Whether you see this ever or not.. shrugs shoulders.. lol) But? I guess Journey sold the song to Scandal in 1984 which they released on their Warrior album. Which I liked but can't believe never heard them sing Only The Young.. Anyhow, ... Journey also recorded & released the song & Scandal was given a large settlement in the legal aftermath. Figured I'd share this interesting little tidbit as I was clueless to all this myself.

This song is awesome, one of my favorites by Journey. To me, I think of this song as being about being young and having the freedom to do whatever you want cause its so early in life. I guess this song can also mean dying at a young age as well. Idk, thats what i think.

This song's meaning is clear. It always makes me feel optimistic because I'm only 20.

I just turned 22 and this song makes me feel old...

@AnotherBrick how does it make you feel now?

@AnotherBrick Well 22 years old is not old however? In a blink you'll be 32 and then 42 and then... Lol, well you get it.. It's all good! But if a song makes you feel old, sad or otherwise down, I suggest you change the channel, CD, Video or whatnot to something that makes ya jump around and feel great! No time to be down! :) Age is but a #.... Seriously!

Journey’s ‘Only the Young’ Gets Lyric Update in New Cover

Journey 's "Only the Young" has been reimagined in a new cover version featuring Eels frontman E — with a lyric change that took the band's former singer  Steve Perry by surprise. The Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan tackled the song — which became a Top 10 hit for Journey and originally appeared in the 1985 movie Vision Quest —  enlisting E to handle vocals on the new record.

What’s Different About the New 'Only the Young' Lyrics?

The new version of "Only the Young" has a relatively minor lyrical change, with the last line of the chorus modified from " Burning like wildfire " to " Reaching higher and higher ."

E — whose full name is Mark Oliver Everett — sounded enthused about the project on a recent episode of the  Naked Lunch podcast, where he also discussed how he learned about the lyrical change while texting Perry, a longtime friend.

How Did Steve Perry React to the New Lyrics?

Perry responded to E and said, "Nice job. Did you change the lyrics, or did they,'" E recalled, noting that there was no punctuation from Perry — not even a question mark — in any of the text messages during their conversation. "They changed the lyrics?" he asked the singer. "Yes," Perry replied. "It doesn't matter now," he added when E inquired about the changes. (UCR has reached out to Miraculous Love Kids' PR regarding the change.)

Who Are the Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan?

Featuring more than 200 children from Afghanistan, as well as Iraq, Pakistan and Kurdistan, the Miraculous Love Kids were formed by organizer Lanny Cordola. The former Giuffria and House of Lords guitarist formed a nonprofit under the same name to teach guitar to war-torn, poverty-stricken children.

Invoking Martin Luther King Jr., Cordola shared in a statement: "We also have a dream – to one day end the suffering of children — and to address this in the most creative and compassionate way possible."

Cordola sought to arrange the new version of "Only the Young" in a "'70s dreamy, California way," to highlight the kids' guitar skills.

'It's Very Sad, Painful and Lovely'

Perry was touched and supportive when he was introduced to the Miraculous Love Kids' music. "It's very sad, painful and lovely," he said in a press release of a previous collaboration  they had done with Brian Wilson . "So sweet, these girls are."

E added that a personal message from the kids "melted my cold, icy heart. … Despite being friends with Steve Perry, I was not familiar with the Journey song they wanted to sing with me, but I knew I wanted to sing with them." You can watch previous Miraculous Love Kids performances with Sammy Hagar , Joe Walsh , Tom Morello and more on Cordola's YouTube channel .

Meet Zoe Dungas, a National Eucharistic Pilgrim

John Hanretty

Meet Zoe Dungas, a Filipino-American actor and dedicated Young Catholic Professional in New York.

Zoe is preparing to undertake the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, a journey of not only miles but of faith, stretching from the verdant landscapes of Connecticut to the anticipated National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. This event, noteworthy as the first of its kind in over eight decades, promises to bring together thousands of the faithful in a profound expression of unity.

Zoe joined John Morales on Morning Air to discuss why her trek is a tapestry woven of adventurous spirit and devout faith, echoing the historical significance of the disciples’ walk to Emmaus.

“The Lord is kind of mysterious. The desire for adventure has been on my heart for a while and then when I stumbled upon the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, it just felt like this desire for adventure and the desire to grow closer to Our Lord kind of came together in such a unique and special way,” she said. “In my own life, the Lord has really met me deeply in Eucharistic adoration and the sacrament of confession. And so, the opportunity to bring our Eucharistic Lord to our country and to be able to pray over our country and pray over the people that Our Lord wants to meet is such a blessing and a gift.”

This act of Eucharistic devotion will see Zoe and her fellow pilgrims journeying along the Seton Route, embracing the struggles of a path that promises both physical challenge and a multitude of graces.

Every day of this pilgrimage is a testament to the vigor of faith, starting with the celebration of the Mass, followed by Eucharistic processions that will bring the sanctity of the Blessed Sacrament into the open world. Walking a robust 10 to 15 miles daily, Zoe’s pilgrimage embodies a journey of life, faith, and the unwavering belief in the true presence of the Holy Eucharist.

The anticipated culmination of this journey to Indianapolis, where as many as 80,000 Catholics are expected to gather, is set to be a monumental occasion. It will be a beacon for all Catholics to participate in this Eucharistic Revival, whether attending in person or being present in spirit from afar.

Through her participation, Zoe aims to traverse not just the American landscape but the contours of her own spiritual life. She speaks of Eucharistic adoration as a cornerstone of her life, a source of peace, clarity, and healing, especially in recent times.

“Something that I’ve learned in Eucharistic adoration over the past couple months of really diving deeper, being committed and consistent to spending that time, is just that the Lord sees us so deeply and always wants to be there with us. He wants to penetrate deep into our hearts, and He wants to heal every wound you could imagine, even the unknown wound.”

This pilgrimage, is a mission embodied in each step, fueled by a heartfelt belief in the guiding and sustaining presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist. This discovery of peace that Zoe found in His presence is something that she hopes to bring to her fellow pilgrims, to all Catholics, and to all non-believers.

The story of Zoe Dungas, as she sets out on this extraordinary, 60-day odyssey, invites each of us to look within and rediscover the pillars of our faith. Her journey, physical and spiritual, challenges us to consider the roads we all walk in our paths to personal holiness.

As the National Eucharistic Congress draws near, the excitement and anticipation are palpable. For many, this pilgrimage is more than a journey—it’s a proclamation of faith, a moving narrative of a modern-day pilgrim guided by the light of the Eucharist, and an invitation to the world to witness and possibly join in this historic sojourn.

Among the nearly 30,000 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), only tens possess Earth co-orbital characteristics with semi-major axes ~1 au. In particular, 469219 Kamo‘oalewa (2016 HO3), an upcoming target of China’s Tianwen-2 asteroid sampling mission, exhibits a meta-stable 1:1 mean-motion resonance with Earth. Intriguingly, recent ground-based observations show that Kamo‘oalewa has spectroscopic characteristics similar to space-weathered lunar silicates, hinting at a lunar origin instead of an asteroidal one like the vast majority of NEAs. Here we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that Kamo‘oalewa’s physical and orbital properties are compatible with a fragment from a crater larger than 10–20 km formed on the Moon in the last few million years. The impact could have ejected sufficiently large fragments into heliocentric orbits, some of which could be transferred to Earth 1:1 resonance and persist today. This leads us to suggest the young lunar crater Giordano Bruno (22 km diameter, 1–10 Myr age) as the most likely source, linking a specific asteroid in space to its source crater on the Moon. The hypothesis will be tested by the Tianwen-2 mission when it returns a sample of Kamo‘oalewa. And the upcoming NEO Surveyor mission may help us to identify such a lunar-derived NEA population.

Extended data

Extended data fig. 1 comparison of kamo‘oalewa’s spectral slope with bus-demeo asteroid taxonomies and lunar materials..

Due to errors in the infrared reflectance, Kamo‘oalewa’s slope possibly ranges from 76 to 101%/ μ m 3 . Typical asteroid slopes are plotted with the mean values and the standard deviations, based on 371 asteroid samples 10 . The slopes of lunar meteorite and samples, whose spectra have been shown in Fig. 1 , are measured using the online Bus-DeMeo taxonomy tool 10 .

Source data

Extended data fig. 2 spectral comparison using the mixture of common factor analysers (mcfa) model..

The latent scores are computed as a lower-dimensional representation of the reflectance spectrum, using the classy package 51 . The MCFA results suggest that Kamo‘oalewa is spectrally similar to lunar materials, but incompatible with any typical asteroid spectrum in public repositories.

Extended Data Fig. 3 Simulated rotation distribution of escaping SPH particles with L \({}_{\max }\) larger than 36 m, for a Kepler-sized crater forming event.

Here we use the SPH particle vorticity to approximate the rotation state of the sub-resolution fragments. The upper panel presents the cumulative fraction of these high-velocity and low-shocked particles versus the rotation period. Note that about 65% of these particles, when ejected, are spinning faster than Kamo‘oalewa which has a period of 28.3 min 3 . The lower panel is a boxplot of the period distribution, suggesting a median of about 6 minutes and an interquartile range (IQR, the box range from the first quartile Q1 to the third quartile Q3) from a few to several tens of minutes. The whiskers are bounded at Q1-1.5*IQR and Q3+1.5*IQR, with the flier points removed. There are 466 and 94 SPH particles used for k=10 30 m −3 and k=10 33 m −3 , respectively.

Extended Data Fig. 4 The location and topography of lunar crater Giordano Bruno.

Left is a map of the lunar farside using the Lunar QuickMap ( https://bit.ly/45Ftwjh ). Right is the topographic map of GB crater from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) data 69 .

Extended Data Fig. 5 Initial condition of N-body simulations.

We start each set of simulation at a random lunar phase ϕ , which indicates the relative position of the Sun-Earth-Moon system, and launched 300 particles along a θ  = 45 ∘ cone at random azimuths ζ and with a given velocity magnitude distribution v 0 (following a power law distribution ranging from 2.38 to 6.0 km/s, and with the power of -4.0 according to Supplementary Fig. 7 ).

Extended Data Fig. 6 GB ejecta delivered to Earth, normalized with the background lunar meteorite flux.

It has been estimated that the GB ejecta is comparable to the total lunar ejecta produced by other craters over 10 Myr 42 , thus the background lunar ejecta per Myr is about one-tenth of the GB total ejecta. Assuming the same delivery efficiency (Earth collision fraction over time) as the GB ejecta, we can integrate the product of the ejecta volume and the delivery efficiency of all previous craters, to estimate the background flux delivered to Earth per Myr. The result shows a ten-fold spike of GB meteorites than the background flux in the first Myr after GB formation (several million years ago). However, this spike is currently unobservable due to the short terrestrial preservation period of lunar meteorites, which only lasts a few hundred thousand years 8 . Presently, GB ejecta contributes to roughly 10% of the background flux of lunar meteorites, implying that our current collection of lunar meteorites likely contains only a handful of GB ejecta, for example, the possible GB meteorites Yamato-82192/82193/86032 42 .
