Keys to the Kingdom Tour at Walt Disney World 5

I have been visiting the parks annually since my parents first brought me at just a year old. Recently I was able to fulfill my life long dream of being a Florida local and moved from the wintery Northeast to the sunshine and fun of central Florida. Now I am hoping to share my Disney knowledge with you so you can have the best vacation possible!

The best $120 I've spent at Disney this year got me into Magic Kingdom's secret tunnels

Tarah Chieffi

What would you say if I told you I paid $120 (on top of my park ticket) to walk around Disney World for five hours and only got on two rides? You'd probably think I'd have been better off spending that money on 15 Dole Whips or creating a realistic lightsaber at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge .

But what if I also told you that during those five hours I had some of the most fun I've had at Disney all year, learned enough park history to fill a book, got to see how the magic is made, and visited backstage areas where guests are not typically allowed -- including the secret underground tunnels where Disney cast members, characters, supplies — and, yes, even garbage — move around under the park unseen.

And those two rides I rode? I was ushered straight to the front of the line.

I was able to do all of this (and more) on Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour . Although I am now the keeper of many Disney secrets, I am not going to divulge all of them to you here. What fun would that be? I am, however, going to share a bit about my experience so that you can decide if it's something you'd like to add to the itinerary for your next Disney World vacation .

Keys to the Kingdom: Tour essentials

If you have ever seen a cast member clad in a dapper plaid outfit leading a small group of guests around the Magic Kingdom, you may have spotted a Keys to the Kingdom Tour. (These are not to be confused with the private VIP tours that cost thousands of dollars .)

Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour is held each morning at the Magic Kingdom, with four staggered start times between 8 a.m. and 9:30 am. The tour is priced at $114 per person plus tax ($121.41 total) and each tour holds about 20 guests.

Because of the small group size, advance reservations are strongly recommended, but they will take walkups based on availability. You can book the tour directly on Disney's website .

The tour is fully accessible if you have a scooter or wheelchair, and ASL interpreters are available. Tours are only given in English, but non-English speaking groups will sometimes bring their own interpreter to work alongside the tour guide.

Keep in mind that theme park admission and a Magic Kingdom Park Pass reservation are also required.

It's also worth noting that guests must be 16 years or older (with valid identification) to participate. Although I found the tour to be fascinating, my 3-, 5- and 9-year-old sons may have had something else to say about standing in the heat for five hours talking about forced perspective and how deep the water is on the Jungle Cruise, so these age guidelines are probably for the best.

Making magic: Highlights and revelations

My tour started at Town Square Theater, which is just inside the entrance to Magic Kingdom.

There is a small check-in desk outside of Tony's Town Square Restaurant where a cast member gave me a name tag and headset to use during the tour and also took my lunch order, so that it could be ready and waiting for me when we took a break for lunch.

Once everyone had checked in, our tour guide Lynn went over the basics of what would be involved — lots of walking and standing, plenty of water and bathroom breaks and no photos or videos (I took my own photos after the tour). She also helped us set up our headsets.

Then she teased us with a bit of magic that would be revealed at the end of the tour by telling us that her "onstage" answer for how Tinkerbell flies during the nightly fireworks show was pixie dust, but she would give us the "backstage" answer at the end of the tour.

kingdom tour disney world

We did a lot of "walking and talking," but we also stopped at certain points so our tour guide could delve deeper into certain topics. Our first stop was Main Street, U.S.A. where we learned about the construction of the Magic Kingdom, right down to the color of the bricks. I had never paid much attention to them, but the bricks leading into the park are red. This was Disney's way of "rolling out the red carpet" for every guest who enters the park.

As we walked down Main Street, U.S.A., our tour guide pointed out the names painted on the windows above the shops. I already knew from being a self-admitted Disney nerd that the windows paid homage to people who helped make the park what it is today, but there were some I had never even noticed.

Walt Disney's name is painted above the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor at the end of Main Street, U.S.A. This is not only because he is the "director" of the show and the director's name historically came last in the film's credits, but also because he loved vanilla ice cream.

kingdom tour disney world

We made our way through Adventureland to the Jungle Cruise, where our guide shared interesting tidbits about the ride, like how Walt wanted to use real animals but was (luckily) advised against it.

Not surprisingly, we all enthusiastically answered "yes," when our guide asked if we wanted to go for a ride. Then, rather than the typical Jungle Cruise spiel (which cracks me up every time), our guide took the microphone and used our time on the ride to discuss how the mechanics of the boats and animals work, along with some Easter eggs to look out for.

kingdom tour disney world

The ride revelations continued as we walked past Pirates of the Caribbean and Splash Mountain — and then things became really interesting.

Our guide took us through a door marked "Cast Members Only" and we were suddenly in a backstage area behind Splash Mountain. I felt like we were sneaking around behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain, which would have been more than enough for me. Then our guide said she had a surprise for us.

kingdom tour disney world

We walked right past the huge warehouse that stages the Festival of Fantasy parade floats just in time to see them preparing the floats for the noon parade. Based on what I learned there and what I know of my own driving skills, I would never have what it takes to pilot one of those parade floats.

kingdom tour disney world

By then, it was time for lunch, which was at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in Frontierland. We had about 30 minutes to eat, but our food was waiting for us when we arrived. Inside each name placard marking our seats was yet another surprise — a golden keepsake pin to commemorate our tour.

kingdom tour disney world

After lunch, we moved into Liberty Square, which, I learned, has one of the last Liberty Bell replicas made from the same mold as the original in Philadelphia (Disney added the distinctive crack on its own).

The Haunted Mansion sat just behind us as we discussed other elements of Liberty Square, so our guide took that opportunity to share details on its design and the special effects used to create the happy haunts who reside there. She then ushered us straight onto the ride, which I looked at in a whole new light after learning more about how it all worked.

kingdom tour disney world

I think the tour guides know that seeing the secret tunnel system — dubbed the "Utilidor" by Disney — is one of the big reasons people take this tour. The Utilidor is something of an urban myth for Disney nerds and a part of the parks that most guests never see or even realize exists.

Referring to the Utilidor as a tunnel is a bit of a misnomer. The part of the Magic Kingdom most guests see is actually on the second floor of the park. The first floor is the Utilidor.

We saw the tubes where 83,000 pounds of trash per day are whisked away from the park, walked past costumed cast members on their way to meet-and-greets with guests and saw walls lined with photos and memorabilia that tied back to everything we had learned about the history and creation of the park during our tour. Since no photos were allowed, you'll have to take the tour for yourself if you want to get a peek.

kingdom tour disney world

The last stop on our tour was where our guide revealed the Tinkerbell scoop she had promised us at the beginning of the tour.

If you are old enough to read this, you probably already know that Tinkerbell doesn't use just pixie dust to fly. Our guide revealed exactly where she lands at the end of her 30-second flight from the top of the 189-foot-tall Cinderella Castle. A young child walked past as she was explaining it to us and the guide stopped so as not to "ruin the magic."

kingdom tour disney world

Was it worth it?

You might think that seeing how the magic is made would ruin some of the mystique of Disney World, but it actually made me appreciate it more than ever -- which was already quite a lot based on the amount of time and money I spend there. I learned so much about the care and attention to detail that went into building the Magic Kingdom and that still goes into operating the park today.

So much of Disney is in the details. Spending five hours walking through the park and focusing exclusively on those details only made the magic stronger.

One of my favorite things about Disney World is that there is always something new to discover — be it a name on a window, a "hidden Mickey" or learning something new about the "man behind the mouse," Walt Disney.

Whether you're a Disney history buff or just really into getting a peek behind the curtain at Disney World, this tour is bound to show you things you've never noticed before. You have to be OK with spending the morning and early afternoon doing more touring than riding, but after the tour is over, you'll step onto those beloved attractions with a newfound admiration for what goes into keeping the magic alive all these years later.

For those groups who are into all things Disney, yes, this tour was definitely worth the time — and money. And of course, there's the added benefit of being able to tell all your friends that you've been inside Disney World's "secret" Utilidors.

How to Book The Keys to the Kingdom Tour

You book the Keys to the Kingdom tour through a dedicated hotline listed on Walt Disney World’s webpage for the tour. This link will take you to that page, as well as other pertinent information.

How far in advance can you book the Keys to the Kingdom tour?

You can book the Keys to the Kingdom tour up to 180 days in advance of your anticipated tour date. It is also possible to simply walk up and buy tickets if they are still available. However, most travel-savvy individuals would likely advise you against waiting so close to time!

How to Save Money on the Tour

Check for deals.

Walt Disney World offers deals on many tours and experiences throughout the year. Keep informed regarding these offers – you might save a lot of money on your Keys to the Kingdom experience!

Buy a base ticket.

Walt Disney World offers two different types of tickets – base tickets and Park Hopper tickets. Base tickets grant admission to only one park per day, while Park Hopper tickets allow you to visit as many of the parks in the Disney World resort as possible in one day.

A base ticket is not only more inexpensive but more practical, as one can really take in only one park per day.

Stay off-site.

Unless you live in the Orlando, Florida, area, you will need to book a room in order to enjoy your Keys to the Kingdom experience.

There is a plethora of budget-friendly options that do not involve staying at a Disney World hotel. Hotels in a variety of price points ring the resort, not to mention private rentals on websites such as Airbnb and VRBO. Look at all your options – a great deal might just be out there!

Buy items ahead of time.

You know you will want to sport Mickey ears during the tour. Why not buy them ahead of time? Amazon provides great deals on Mickey’s ears, as well as T-shirts and other Disney-themed merchandise. Taking this step will leave you with more money to enjoy your excursion.

Pack snacks and drinks.

Walking for hours in the hot Florida sun would make anyone hungry and thirsty. You will not regret packing your own water bottle and snacks to bring along with you on the Keys to the Kingdom tour.

Unlike many theme parks, Disney allows visitors to bring their own food and drink. But do save room in your stomach – this tour offers lunch as part of the package. More on that later…

Should You Do It?

As amazing as the Keys to the Kingdom Tour is, it would not be suitable for everyone. There are people who would not enjoy this experience or could join it due to restrictions. Here are a few things to keep in mind before buying tickets and heading to Florida.

  • Age.   Disney World does not allow visitors under the age of 16 on the tour. This makes plenty of sense – no one would want to ruin Disney for its youngest guests.
  • Devotion to Disney magic . Do you adore the magic of Disney? Do you find the thought of that magic being dimmed to be distressing? Then this tour is probably not for you. The Keys to the Kingdom tour, though fun and fascinating, brings the Disney experience down to earth in a way you would likely not enjoy.

On the other hand, you should strongly consider going on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour if you are:

  • A big Disney fan . Obviously!
  • Someone who enjoys learning secrets. The stated purpose of this tour is to let guests in on some “insider” information about the park.  Brace yourself for a mind-blowing experience!
  • Someone who loves a good time. Without a doubt, there is lots of fun to be enjoyed on this tour!

There are so many captivating aspects of the Keys to the Kingdom tour. Let’s dig into the details of this amazing experience!

What do you do on the Keys to the Kingdom tour?

On the Keys to the Kingdom tour, you will enjoy learning and experiencing:

Walt Disney

Millions of people revel in the magic that this man created; however, few take the time to get to know him. The Keys to the Kingdom tour changes this reality by giving guests an in-depth look at the life of Walt Disney. Tour guides unveil the genius he applied to Disney World and take visitors through his thought process in designing and building the park.

Fun facts and trivia

There are so many interesting stories and details about Disney World that one easily misses unless someone points it out to them. This tour provides guests with a wealth of information. The hidden Mickeys throughout the park are just one example of the fascinating features that are revealed on the tour.

Secrets of the Magic Kingdom

Have you ever explored the Magic Kingdom and wondered, “I wonder what happens behind the curtain at such and such a location”? Then you are in for a treat. The Keys to the Kingdom tour goes behind the scenes of iconic locations in one of the most beloved resorts in Disney World and unveils the secrets of these spots to you. Examples of possible tour stops include the Haunted Mansion and the Jungle Cruise.

The underworld of the Utilidors

Last but certainly not least, we come to a world-famous non-secret of Disney World: the utilidors. The Disney World resort is actually housed on the second floor of the complex. The first is a labyrinth of corridors that contains a separate world away from guests’ view.

Walt Disney supposedly came up with the utilidors when he saw a cast member in a Frontierland costume in Tomorrowland and wanted to keep such out-of-place moments from detracting from the magic of Disney.

These corridors help cast members to move between locations, house storage and food preparation facilities, and serve as the headquarters of Engineering Central, the control board of the park’s parades, lights, music, and more.

The utilidors also feature the ingenious AVAC (Automated Vacuum-Assisted Collection) garbage disposal system, which relies on pneumatic tubes to get rid of the tons of trash generated by park visitors every year.

If you would like to learn more about the utilidors, follow the link to this article full of fascinating details about these corridors.

Are there any rides on the Keys to the Kingdom tour?

You will likely experience several rides during the Keys to the Kingdom tour. However, it is important to remember that Disney reserves the right to change specific stops on the tour at any time. Furthermore, the focus of this tour is not as much the rides as the behind-the-scenes details about Disney that it offers. So buckle up and enjoy everything you will experience on this tour!

Tips for the Keys to the Kingdom Tour

Guest requirements

As mentioned previously, guests on the Keys to the Kingdom tour must be over 16 years of age. They must also have a valid photo I.D. to be admitted. So, tour day would not be the time to forget your wallet at the hotel!

The cost of the tour is $129-$149 per person. This amount, however, is for the tour only – you must also pay the price for general admission to go on the tour. Keep this in mind as you budget for this amazing experience!

The Keys to the Kingdom tour is mostly outdoors and completely on foot. Thus, wearing sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes is especially important. You should also make sure to stay hydrated. Keep an eye on the weather forecast as well, and bring an umbrella or raincoat just in case the heavens open while you are on the tour.

Photography/videography policy

Planning on documenting the entire Keys to the Kingdom tour for your vlog? Think again. Disney World has a strict policy forbidding any use of cameras, video cameras, and even cell phones during the tour. Though this is not convenient, it does make sense. Disney does not want all the secrets to be spilled and ruin future tours or the Disney experience for other visitors.

One of the great benefits of this tour is the fact that lunch is included! Thus, you can enjoy everything you are learning and experiencing without worrying about how you will fix the rumble in your stomach later!

Souvenir

Another neat perk of the Keys to the Kingdom tour is the one-of-a-kind souvenir tour guides give you. Previous tour guests received a key pin with mouse ears engraved with the words “Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom” on it.

Of course, it is important to remember that the souvenir you receive could look different. Nonetheless, whatever you receive will be special and unique to the tour!

If you adore Walt Disney World, love learning interesting facts and little-known trivia, and want your eyes opened to what makes this world-famous park tick, then you will want to buy tickets to the Keys to the Kingdom tour. You will not be disappointed!

Keep in mind everyone doing the tour must be 16 years or older. This tour is also fully accessible for those with mobility impairments!

What Can I Expect to Learn & See on Keys to the Kingdom?

OK – if you already know a lot about the Magic Kingdom or Disney Parks history, you probably won’t learn anything too surprising. Here’s a brief rundown of what we learned about and where we went on our tour:

kingdom tour disney world

  • Main Street USA – learned about the history of the property owned by Disney in Florida, and a “who’s who” of some of the windows, with a noted emphasis on Roy Disney
  • Adventureland – talked about the storytelling in Adventureland, with a ride on the Jungle Cruise included. Also discussed some of the history of Audio-Animatronics, and learned some fun facts about Pirates of the Caribbean & Tiki Room.
  • Backstage – we entered backstage near Splash Mountain/Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and learned a lot about entertainment & parades. Our tour guide came from an entertainment background within the company, so he shared a lot about his journey as a Cast Member and some personal stories. We saw parade floats and learned about how they are maintained and some of their operational features, along with the responsibilities of some Entertainment Cast Members.
  • Lunch – next we took a lunch break at Pecos Bill’s. We could order an entree and a bottled drink; I chose nachos & a Diet Coke. They had a little toppings bar set up for us, too!
  • Frontierland – we walked through Frontierland to get to Liberty Square. We did not make any stops in Frontierland.
  • Liberty Square – we gathered on the dock area for the steamboat and learned about some of the details of Liberty Square, with an emphasis on the Hall of Presidents and Haunted Mansion. Next up, we rode Haunted Mansion and then discussed some of the tricks and effects that we saw on the ride.
  • Fantasyland – we didn’t stop in Fantasyland, but we went straight to a door leading backstage and entered the Utilidors! This was very cool and definitely the highlight for me. We learned about some of the operations of the Utilidors and where the corridors lead, and saw a few rooms/offices that help support the operation of the Magic Kingdom. We also saw a couple princesses getting ready to go up to Cinderella’s Royal Table to greet guests at lunch.
  • Backstage Main Street – we exited the Utilidors behind Main Street, where we learned more about Tinker Bell’s flight from Cinderella Castle during the fireworks. We saw where she lands each night, which was really interesting and surprising. We also saw the facility where they store all the ice cream bars.
  • Conclusion of tour – at this point our tour was over and we handed in our listening devices and parted ways with the tour group.

Tips for Experiencing Keys to the Kingdom

If you are participating in a tour that begins before the park opens, think about your transportation wisely! We booked the 8am tour on a day when the park was scheduled to open at 9, meaning that Early Entry for resort guests began at 8:30. Since we are local, we drove ourselves in. We planned to arrive at the gates as early as possible. We parked around 7am after encountering no Cast Members at the parking booths, and we were held at security until about 7:15am. The security guard let us know that the only mode of transportation available at this time was the ferryboat – so once we were cleared through security we hustled over to the boarding area. It wasn’t long before we were underway to the Magic Kingdom, and we made our way over to the tapstiles, which opened right at 7:45am.

If you’re staying on Disney property, I would strongly suggest looking into using Uber or Lyft to get you to the Ticket & Transportation Center, as buses may or may not be running that early. Another great option is the Minnie Van service, which drops guests off right outside the gates of the Magic Kingdom.

If you have a later tour, you don’t need to worry as much about the logistics of transportation, but do make sure you arrive early to give yourself ample time to get through security and into the park. The check-in area is just past the Main Street train station, on the right, at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. Arriving early allows you to get your listening device, place your lunch order, and do a quick bathroom stop before embarking on your tour.

kingdom tour disney world

During the Tour

If you have a physical disability requiring the use of an ECV or wheelchair, this tour is fully accessible for you! Your tour guide will talk to you in advance about boarding the Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion so that they can let the Cast Members at the attractions know.

If you have food allergies, make sure to mention that when you place your lunch order so that the chefs at Pecos Bill’s can prepare a special meal for you. Disney is great with allergies, so you don’t need to worry about not being able to find something to eat.

They will also provide you with Dasani water bottles on the tour, but feel free to bring additional snacks and/or drinks. Also, sunscreen up! This is a long tour and has a lot of walking and standing in the Florida heat. Be prepared!

There are designated bathroom stops during the tour, but if you need to go, make sure to tell your tour guide and the group will wait for you.

There is absolutely no photography or video recording backstage, and there are a few opportunities to take pictures throughout the tour. Our tour guide told us if we wanted to take a couple quick pictures we could, but I only took one the entire tour because I was too busy listening to the information!

You will be given an audio listening device so you can hear what the tour guide is saying. If you encounter any issues with your device, let your tour guide know ASAP, as they carry spares with them. We had a couple that died out on our tour and they were swapped out within a minute or two.

Another thing to note is that the tour guides who run the tour are extremely well-versed in Disney Parks history, so feel free to ask them any questions that come up. If they don’t know the answer, they will reach out to their team and try to get an answer for you! Some of the questions can only be answered backstage so as other park guests don’t overhear and have the magic spoiled for them. They’ll let you know if they need to answer your question backstage!

Tron and Keys to the Kingdom

With Tron requiring a boarding group via virtual queue or the purchase of an Individual Lightning Lane , talk to your tour guide if you received a callback time that is during your tour. They will work with you and get you rescheduled so you don’t miss out on riding Tron! Additionally, if your tour takes place around 1pm (during the 2nd drop for the virtual queue), make sure to let your tour guide know that you will need to take a moment to book yourself a boarding group. The Cast Members understand and are more than accommodating!

What to do After Keys to the Kingdom

After your tour, you’ll likely be pretty tired from walking around all day, and you’ll probably also be on information overload. If you’re local, I would recommend heading home and resting before returning to the parks. If you’re visiting from out of town, I would do a slow-moving/restful attraction like Carousel of Progress or take a ride on the Monorail . A table service meal is also a great option, so you can sit with your party and talk about everything you learned on the tour!

My Thoughts on the Tour

I thought Keys to the Kingdom was informative and I appreciated our tour guide’s personal insights. He did a great job weaving stories from his days as an Entertainment Cast Member into the storytelling and production that goes into running the Magic Kingdom. I didn’t learn too much that was groundbreaking or new to me, but I did learn more about Roy Disney and his involvement in getting the Magic Kingdom & Walt Disney World Resort up and running. Although I heard things that I mostly knew already, it was insightful to be standing in the park, looking at different aspects of the park both onstage and backstage, and seeing it all come together to tell different stories. Magic Kingdom is not my favorite park at Walt Disney World (shoutout to Epcot) but after going on Keys to the Kingdom I now see the flagship Florida Disney park in a new light and appreciate the operations required to support such a complex park.

I would gladly go on this tour again, and I’m interested in taking it with a different tour guide! I loved our tour guide’s information and personal stories from his time in Entertainment, and I would love to hear other perspectives and details too.

Learn more about how you can make your Magic Kingdom Park visit memorable and as stress-free as possible. Here are a few things to consider:

Pack Light for your Day

Keep things simple and portable, especially when traveling with kids. The last thing you want to do is juggle personal items around and feel weighed down.  Streamline your necessities  for a smoother day.

Bring water, buy water, or ask for free water and ice in a cup at any of the quick-service restaurants and eateries for your family. With all the excitement, someone might forget to stay adequately hydrated.

Height Restrictions

It’s best to steer your kids away from rides where you know they won’t meet the height requirements, even if it’s only half an inch. Safety comes first, and Disney Cast Members won’t budge on height requirements.

It’s Florida. Chances are it might rain, so be sure to pack ponchos for your whole crew. Buying them ahead of time at a local big box store will save you money.

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Walt disney world announces largest expansion ever to magic kingdom park.

LAKE BUENA VISTA., Fla. – “The Most Magical Place on Earth” is going to have a lot more for guests to explore in the next few years.

On Thursday, Disney announced a 10-year investment plan which would include a 14-acre expansion to the Magic Kingdom Park.

Recommended Videos

The expansion to the most visited theme park in the world is just part of a $60 billion investment in the company’s portfolio of theme parks, experiences and cruise ships in the works for the next decade.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said, 70% of the investment will be focused on new attractions that expand the capacity of Disney’s theme parks and cruise ships. The remaining 30%, he said, is focused on the technology and maintenance to make that expansion happen.

“As I looked at the returns on the invested capital that we made in this business over the 15 years prior to my coming back, it was extraordinarily compelling. We should allocate in a direction where we had great returns,” said Iger.

According to the Disney Parks Blog “ Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ” in Frontierland is set to open this Summer. The ride will feature dozens of audio-animatronics, new music and the famous 50-foot drop. The popular attraction, formerly known as “Splash Mountain” officially closed in Jan. 2023 for refurbishments.

Disney World Planning Largest Magic Kingdom Expansion Ever As Part Of $60 Billion Effort

Disney World is growing in a big way.

By Eddie Makuch on April 5, 2024 at 11:32AM PDT

Walt Disney World has big plans to grow. The company has confirmed plans for the "largest expansion ever" at Disney World's Magic Kingdom park, though many of the key details remain a mystery for now.

Disney is planning to expand beyond the existing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction for a new space that will be about the same size as Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, which is 14 acres. "It's probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom," Disney's Michael Hundgen said, as reported by CNN.

Importantly, though, Disney has not yet disclosed what the theme of this new area might be, or when the expansion could break ground. The expansion is in the works under the name "Beyond Big Thunder," and Disney is now reportedly seeking permits to kick things off.

Pressed for specifics about the expansion, Iger declined to discuss things further. "We disclose these at a cadence and when we really feel we're ready, and we have something more tangible to show people," he said, according to Deadline. The website also reminds us that Disney management previously suggested that the future expansion could be themed in part around Encanto.

Some are theorizing that Iger is being coy because Disney has a grander announcement to make at D23 this August. Time will tell.

In 2023, Disney said it was planning a $60 billion investment into its parks, cruises, and other experiences in the next 10 years. 70% of this, or $42 billion, will be spent on new attractions, with the other $18 billion allocated for technology and maintenance to support the expansions.

Disney's planned Magic Kingdom expansion comes amidst the news that Universal Orlando Resort will open a third park, Epic Universe , in 2025, featuring a new Harry Potter area and Super Nintendo World.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney's recent settlement with Florida will "enable us to pursue the kind of significant investment in our Florida parks..."

While Disney fans will have to wait a while longer to learn more about the expansion to Magic Kingdom, new attractions are on the much closer horizon. The iconic Splash Mountain ride at Disney World was decommissioned in 2023 and is preparing to re-open as Tiana's Bayou Adventure later this year. The official animatronics for this ride were just revealed this week, and you can see them in action in the video below.

Additionally, the Rock N' Rollercoaster featuring the band Aerosmith at Hollywood Studios is now temporarily closed for refurbishment. And the Test Track ride at Epcot is shutting down in June so Disney's Imagineers can conduct a reimagining of the aging attraction.

Disney World celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021.

Revealed! Exciting New Expansions at Disney World

Ok, who’s ready to visit different lands within Walt Disney World? I know I am!

I recall the expansion of Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom and how eagerly I anticipated the openings of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Under the Sea. In fact, the first time I went on Under the Sea, I was unexpectedly moved to tears (sorry, no idea why).

This new expansion is going to be even bigger! Let’s get to what we know.

Magic Kingdom’s Monumental Expansion

Nestled on the edge of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, the “wildest ride in the wilderness,” Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, marks just the beginning of what’s to come.

The park, celebrated as the most visited theme park globally, is set to undergo its most significant expansion yet. Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World’s site portfolio executive, unveiled plans during a rare media event at the Walt Disney Imagineering facility in California, describing the project as “ probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom .”

Comparable in size to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, which spans about 14 acres, this expansion is still shrouded in mystery with no confirmed themes or completion dates.

However, rumor has it Disney is filing for work permits within the next couple of weeks, so maybe we will know something then.

Animal Kingdom Reimagined

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is set for an exciting transformation with the introduction of new lands inspired by the enchanting world of “Encanto” and the adventurous spirit of “Indiana Jones.”

This renovation will reimagine the current DinoLand U.S.A. area, with significant changes including the replacement of the Dinosaur ride with an Indiana Jones-themed attraction and the Dino-Rama area being revamped into an Encanto-themed space.

Personally, I’ve been on the Indiana Jones ride at both Paris Disney and the original Disneyland. They are completely different, but I think I prefer the indoor ride at the CA theme park. Can’t wait to see if they bring one of these to Orlando!

The expansion aims to bring the vibrant and diverse cultures of the tropical Americas to life, offering park visitors a rich blend of storytelling and immersive experiences.

Walt Disney Imagineering has already begun detailed concept designs for this new area, drawing inspiration from research trips to the Yucatán Peninsula to authentically recreate the lush landscapes envisioned.

Disney’s Decade of Investment

This ambitious expansion forms a part of Disney’s staggering $60 billion investment strategy aimed at enhancing its parks, cruises, and experiences over the next ten years.

Disney showcased some of its cutting-edge projects and technologies currently in development during a special preview attended by media outlets.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, who resumed his role in November 2022, emphasized the importance of strategic investment based on past capital returns and advocated for flexibility in future project allocations, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of future blockbuster successes.

Technological Advances and New Frontiers

A significant portion of Disney’s investment will focus on expanding park capacities and incorporating new technologies like the innovative “HoloTile.” Demonstrated to reporters, this technology allows interactive movement within virtual environments, simulating physical interactions reminiscent of powers from the “Star Wars” universe.

Additionally, Disney’s R&D teams have introduced “Star Wars” BD-X droids, which feature advanced movement and interaction capabilities, further blurring the lines between technology and entertainment.

As Disney continues to push the boundaries of theme park experiences and technological innovation, the excitement for what’s next in store at Magic Kingdom and beyond only grows stronger.
