How to get to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore

Kuala Lumpur is on the western side of Malaysia, a five- to six-hour bus ride from Singapore. We always book our tickets with 12GoAsia *, a handy website that shows you all the available buses. You can either book directly from Singapore * (most buses leave from SunCity), or you can get a much cheaper ticket by booking from Johor Bahru *. The buses go to the main bus terminal of Kuala Lumpur – Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS Terminal) – which is on the south side of Kuala Lumpur. From there you can take a Grab or light rail to the centre of Kuala Lumpur.

With a bus directly from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, the bus drops you at the border to complete border formalities and picks you up again on the other side. If you take a bus from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur, you have to travel yourself to Johor Bahru Larkin Sentral Bus Terminal . The 170 bus from Singapore goes directly from the Malaysian side of the border to Larkin Sentral and you can pay with your EZ-link card, so this is a convenient option.

Central Kuala Lumpur from the Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is quite far from the centre of the city. The quickest, most convenient way to get between the two is with the KLIA Transit train. This brings you directly from the airport to KL Sentral railway station. You can buy tickets in advance * for the train, and just scan the QR code from your phone to get on board.

If you are visiting more places in Malaysia, it may be more convenient to hire a car for your holiday from Kuala Lumpur, check options on Rentalcars *.

Tips for Kuala Lumpur Walking Tour

Kuala Lumpur Walking Tour Route

This walking tour starts from Masjid Jamek Light Rail Station in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. From here you will see the first stop on the walking route, Jamek Mosque, right in front of you.

1. Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque

Jamek Mosque

Key Information: Free entry, open 8:30am-12:30pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm. You have to dress modestly to visit Jamek Mosque, but if not you are given a long gown.

Jamek Mosque ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) is a wonderfully beautiful mosque in the centre of town, near Merdeka Square. You can go in or just admire it from the outside. The mosque is set amongst palm trees by a confluence in the river, and it’s the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur, dating back to 1909.

Directions: Head around the right-hand side of the mosque and across the river on the glass-sided Masjid Jamek Pedestrian Bridge, into Merdeka Square.

History of Kuala Lumpur

The city of Kuala Lumpur is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gomak Rivers. Initially, a little township grew up here along the banks of the rivers, surrounded by very fertile land. It grew up with the tin mining boom and is now a booming, modern city. In the centre of town, many historic buildings are well preserved, and others are beginning to crumble into ruins, in a way even more evocative of the past.

2. Merdeka Square

kl tour map

Key Information: Free entry, open 24/7. Lit nicely at night and pedestrianized at the weekends.

Merdeka (Independence) Square (Tripadvisor Reviews*) is a large grassy square in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by historic buildings. It’s a sight not to be missed in Kuala Lumpur. Important parades are held here, where independence was gained by the Malaysians from the British. It was here in 1957 that the old Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag was raised. The road along the edge of Merdeka Square is pedestrianised on certain weekends.

Directions: Head straight on, across a road, then right to reach the Count Down Clock

Count Down Clock and St Mary’s Cathedral

Count Down Clock

At the Count Down Clock monument, you can slip inside beneath the water and look out through the rain drops while simultaneously being cooled down by the damp air. Oppoiste this new buildings is the Panggung Bandaraya DBKL Theatre , a historic theatre in a lovely building.

Directions: Head left across the river, then left again to walk along the river to the front of St Mary’s Cathedral.

St Mary’s Cathedral ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) is an old colonial British cathedral, a gathering place for Christians from the British colonial era. You can visit inside. It’s next to the Royal Selangor Club , a unique building from 1884, now with a mock-Tudor style. It’s always been a posh members club, so you can’t go in.

Directions: Now make a loop of Merdeka Square, passing the important monuments on the way.

Museums and historic buildings

 Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

The Kuala Lumpur City Gallery ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) is a great museum about the history of Kuala Lumpur City, located in the fancy building at the far end of the Square. It’s open 9am-6pm every day apart from Tuesdays.

The gorgeous long building with the clock tower is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building ( Tripadvisor Reviews *). From 1897, it used to be the base of the colonial British administration in Kuala Lumpur. The design is Moorish-European, with clock towers covered in burnished copper.

To the right of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is the old post office, and next to that in another lovely building, is the National Textile Museum ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open 9am-6pm daily, RM2-5). This museum is about how textiles have been important in the fashion and culture of Malaysia, with a focus on Batik.

Directions: Head towards the river, and then left to walk along the banks.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building

From the walkway by the river, there are great views of Jamek Mosque and the back side of the Sultan Abdul building, along with a peaceful garden and several benches.

Directions: Continue along the river, across Jamek Mosque Pedestrian Bridge and then right along the street past the light rail station where you started. Now head right down a side street immediately after the overhead bridges. Continue walking along the river until you reach the front of the Central Market.

3. Central Market

Central Market of Kuala Lumpur

Key Information: Open 10am-6pm. Allow 30 minutes.

The Central Market of Kuala Lumpur ( Tripadvisor Reviews *), founded in 1888 for the local tin mining community, used to be a bustling wet market selling fresh produce. It’s now transformed into a huge warehouse selling mainly tourist goods, antiques, clothes and craft works, along with food upstairs. The building itself is from 1888. Batik products. There are also sometimes cultural shows and eating places in the market upstairs. The current building, Art Deco style, is from the 1930s.

Directions: Head out of the far end of the market and turn right. Take a right, then quickly left and right again down Jalan Hang Kasturi. You’re now near the centre of Chinatown.

4. Chinatown

Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur

In Chinatown ( TripAdvisor Reviews *) there are Chinese Buddhist temples, Sri Mahamariamman Temple , shophouses, street food and bars, with lots going on along the streets, and that shopping street. The Chinatown area feels more busy and authentic than some other more sterilized areas of Kuala Lumpur. It’s a great place to walk around.

On your left you’ll soon see the famous Taoist temple, Sze Ya Temple , a small but ornate temple that you can visit during daylight hours.

Directions: Walk down the street and cross the main road. Turn left and soon you’ll reach the entrance to pedestrianized Petaling Street.

Petaling Street

Petaling Street Market, a stop on a walking tour through Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Street Market ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) is in the centre of Chinatown. It feels quite different, very busy and more authentic than some of the other neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur. The street is covered, so shady and sheltered from the rain. There are many little stalls along the street, selling fabrics, crafts and much more, at quite good prices, and haggling is excepted at most stalls. Petaling Street is also a great place to visit at nighttime when there’s a night market.

Directions: At the end of Petaling Street, continue straight on through busy Chinatown. You’ll reach a roundabout and see Chan See Shu Yuen Temple on your left.

Temples in Chinatown

Sze Ya Temple

Chan See Shu Yuen Temple is an old, atmospheric Chinese temple with many red lanterns in the central courtyard.

Directions: Head back a short distance, then left and right to walk along a street parallel to Petaling Street. Cross Jalan Sultan, head slightly right then left again to continue north. At the next crossroads turn left.

You’ll soon see Guan Di Temple (open 7am-7pm, free entry), another Taoist Temple, dedicated to the God of War. There are several fierce temple guardians, calming incense and wooden statues.

Directions: Just down the street on the opposite side of the road is Sri Mahamariamman Temple.

Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Sri Mahamariamman Temple ( Tripadvisor Reviews *), from 1873, is a Hindu Temple of southern Indian origins for the Tamil community and the oldest Hindu Temple in Kuala Lumpur. The gopuram is very colourful and wonderfully carved. On non-festival days you can visit inside, with free entry at 6am-noon and 4:30-8:30pm. Women must have covered shoulders and knees.

Crossing the Railway and the River

Directions: Just right of the temple, head towards the river. You’ll see an escalator going up to a walkway and bridge across the railway. You’ll cross the river first, then a highway, then head right to parallel the railways before the walkway turns left and into a multistory car park. Head out of the car park and right along the road to a large roundabout.

Kuala Lumpur Sentral Railway Station

From the roundabout, you’ll see Kuala Lumpur Sentral Railway Station ( Tripadvisor Reviews *), an atmospheric crumbling old colonial building. It’s very picturesque and quite an anomaly in the middle of the town. Opposite the Railway Station building is another colonial building in a slightly better state of repair.

Directions: Cross over the road (there is an underground passage, but it’s quite dark, or go back to the roundabout), and at the roundabout head left towards the Islamic Art Museum.

5. Islamic Art Museum

Islamic Art Museum on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur

Key Information: Open 9:30am-6pm every day. Tickets to the Islamic Art Museum cost RM14/7 for adults/discounts. Allow 1-2 hours.

The Islamic Art Museum ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is a large museum containing thousands of Islamic objects, all housed in a beautiful gallery space. The building is also lovely from outside, with a large blue onion dome. The museum has various exhibits focusing on architecture, books, and textiles, and also displays models of important mosques from around the world. It’s well worth a visit.

You’ll pass the National Mosque ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) before reaching the Islamic Art Museum. It’s less attractive than Masjid Jamek and quite a contemporary building, but it’s very large and can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers. To visit, head to the visitor’s entrance (you’ll be provided with robes and headscarves) which is open 9am-12pm, 3-4pm and 5:30-6:30pm every day, but not Friday mornings.

Directions: Head back down the street a little way and turn right opposite the mosque up a road towards the Botanical Gardens. Follow the signs towards the National Planetarium, up some steps into the park.

Just before the gardens, you’ll pass the Royal Malaysia Police Museum ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open 9am-5pm (until 2:30pm on Fridays), closed Mondays, free admission). It’s a museum about the history of the police in Malaysia, from British colonial rule until the present.

6. Perdana Botanical Garden

Perdana Botanical Garden

Key Information: Open 7am-8pm, free entry.

The Perdana Botanical Gardens ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) are a peaceful place to relax near the centre of Kuala Lumpur, and a break from walking. There are several sections of the gardens to explore, including the Sunken Garden, the Hibiscus Garden, the Bamboo Garden, and several walks around lakes.

Bordering the gardens is the KL Bird Park ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open 9am-6pm, RM42-63). It has a very large walk-in aviary and a restaurant/cafe, a great place if you like birds. If you’re interested in birds, butterflies and Orchids, try a tour that combines them all *.

The National Planetarium ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open Tue-Sun 9am-4:30pm, RM12/8 for foreign adults/children) is also located in the Botanic Gardens. There are exhibits about space and how past great Islamic civilizations have contributed to astronomy.

Directions: Your route through the Botanical Gardens is not important, but end by heading towards the southern end of the park, at the south end of the lakes. There is a tunnel here underneath a highway, and once across you’ll see the National Museum, and the final stop on the walking tour, on your left.

7. National Museum of Malaysia

National Museum of Malaysia, the last stop on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur.

Key Information: Open 9am-5pm every day. Closed first Monday of every month. Allow roughly 2 hours. R5/2 for foreign adults/children.

The National Museum of Malaysia ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) is divided into four exhibits about four different periods of Malaysia’s history, starting far back in time and ending in the current day. There are also several exhibits around the museum grounds, such as old planes and trains.

This is the end of the Kuala Lumpur Walking Tour. There is a useful Metro stop right by the National Museum, from which you can take a train back to the beginning of the hike, or to other attractions in Kuala Lumpur further away from the centre, as described below.

Best Museums in Central Kuala Lumpur

The best museums in Kuala Lumpur are the National Museum of Malaysia (the last stop on this walking tour) and the Islamic Arts Museum (stop 5).

kl tour map

Attractions in Kuala Lumpur further Afield

Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur

The Batu Caves ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open 6am to 9pm) are quite far from the centre of town, but definitely worth a look as they are one of the most unique sights in Kuala Lumpur. The spectacular limestone hills contain many caves, several of which are known as the Batu Caves, which contain a temple complex roughly 100 years old.

The main cave is free to enter, though there are several additional caves that you have to pay a small fee to enter. One cave displays the story of the Ramayana, and is worth the small entrance fee. Women must cover their knees – you are forced to buy a sarong to wrap around if your knees are not covered.

To reach the Batu Caves either take a taxi/Grab or go via train – there’s a station adjacent to Batu Caves. In rush hour, the train can be much quicker than Grab. The trains, however, are not that frequent, running roughly every hour or so. Alternatively, you can go on a guided tour to the Batu Caves * from central Kuala Lumpur.

Petronas Towers

Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers ( Tripadvisor Reviews *) are the most famous landmark building in Kuala Lumpur. They used to be the tallest towers in the world, and have come to define the city. These towers have 88 stories each, with a bridge between them roughly halfway up, called the Skybridge (check out tickets on Klook *, open 9am-9pm, closed Mondays). You can also visit several rooftop bars in the area for sky-high views.

To visit the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves and the KL Bird Park, organized for you, check out this full-day tour on Klook *.

Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower)

The KL Tower Observation Deck ( Tripadvisor Reviews *, open 11am-7pm Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri and open 10am-10pm on Tue, Sat and Sun) is another tower viewing option and is much higher than the Petronas Towers Skybridge. It has the added advantage of being already built on a hill.

Kuala Lumpur Aquarium KLCC

The Aquarium near the Petronas Towers is very popular. There are tiger sharks, sea snakes, sea horses and much more. One of the highlights is walking through a long glass tunnel surrounded by many fish, sharks and other sea creatures. Get tickets to the aquarium online * to avoid the queues and secure a spot.

Accommodation in Kuala Lumpur

There are many, many places to stay in Kuala Lumpur. They vary from cheap hostels to the most luxurious hotels.

Best Budget Hotel : BIG M Hotel * has a great location close to both Jamek Mosque and a train station. The rooms are clean (some with views of the Mosque), there’s good WiFi and a 24-hour reception.

Best Comfort Hotel : Mingle Highstreet * also has a great location close to the Jamek Mosque. It’s a cute hotel with a lovely swimming pool and it’s a great place to meet other travellers. The staff are friendly and the hotel offers many activities every day.

Best Luxurious Hotel : The RuMa Hotel and Residences * is not far from the Petronas Towers and has large, stylish rooms and great service. There’s a gorgeous infinity pool and bar on the sixth floor, as well as a gym and WiFi throughout.

I hope you enjoyed this walking tour of Kuala Lumpur. If you want to see another historic Malaysian city, check out historic Malacca , or explore Johor Bahru just opposite Singapore.

What past guests loved about the experience:

“ My partner and I were staying in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days and booked a tour with Brendon to explore the city, learn about Malaysian culture, get food tips and to meet a local. Brendon delivered all of that!  We met in the city center, told him what we had been up to the previous days, our dietary restrictions and based on that Brendon guided us through the city. We learned a lot, got recommendations and had a lot of fun throughout the tour.  We will recommend Brendon as a guide to anyone coming to KL. Ideally, you book him on the first day so you know what to do the following days too. Thanks, Brendon! ” – Marina (read more reviews )

  • Patrick S 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Lovely Experience Our Guide AND Driver was Ayyanar and that was the reason why the experience was so great! He was very friendly and very kind and on top he delivered some really top insides about Kuala Lumpur, all the people and their religions! The tour was very smooth - we had enough time to explore the temples and mosque! If we did the tour on our own we would have needed much more unnecessary time, and it would have been more expensive! So nice experience! Thank you Ayyanar! 24 Top Tourist Attractions in Kuala Lumpur

By Jamie Gambetta · Last updated on May 4, 2024

One of the world’s most iconic cities, Kuala Lumpur, is abuzz with action. It’s a sleepless collection of modern skyscrapers, old-time flea markets and a crazy mix of car fumes and smoke from shoebox kitchens.

Kuala Lumpur is electric and enticing from the moment you land. Everything you’d expect from a bustling South East Asian city, yet in many ways utterly Western. Your days are spent wandering between the ultra-modern malls of Butik Bintang and the hectic Jalan Alor, a delightful contrast.

See also: Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur

Without the seediness that permeates other nearby cities, there are things to do in Kuala Lumpur for all ages and budgets. Families are as well represented as couples and solo travelers. Choose between the fascinating tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur, explore the incredible caves and highlands nearby before toasting to a memorable day atop one of the city’s many rooftop haunts.

24. National Museum

National Museum

For those who appreciate history and want to learn more about Malaysian culture, you can’t pass up a visit to the National Museum. This is the country’s most prominent heritage space. It tells the story of a relatively young nation and connecting it to its ancient history over thousands of years prior.

Set on lands once bombed during the Second World War, you’ll find exhibits that explore that very era alongside traditional military from the centuries prior. Other halls explore Malaysia’s colonial past under British and Japanese rule, the ensuing fight for the nation’s independence plus 19th century timber palaces and traditional clothing.

23. Lake Symphony

Lake Symphony

The centerpiece of the KL Convention Center is Lake Symphony. Featuring a 43 meter (140ft) bridge that spans a massive man-made lake, the Lake Symphony is a captivating water show that sees fountains shoot water 180 meters (590ft) up in the air.

This memorable event occurs three times daily at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm, respectively. Complementing the water flying upwards is every color under the sun, along with music that helps to set the scene and elevates the anticipation.

Adding even more to the sense of occasion is the looming presence of the Petronas Twin Towers, which also shine bright under the night sky.

22. Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

Set alongside Merdeka Square, the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery is the spot to learn about the history of the capital while also indulging in contemporary art.

The gallery is within a historic colonial-era building. The gallery’s miniature-scale exhibit known as the Spectacular City Model Show showcasing more of the city’s prominent landmarks.

Afterwards, check out the enormous wall that takes you on a journey through the history of KL from the mid-19th century to today. Art lovers will also enjoy the offerings from national talents along with emerging young artists. For those who enjoy a great selfie, don’t miss the famous I Love KL sign at the City Gallery.

21. Pavilion KL

Pavilion KL

Within Kuala Lumpur’s famous shopping district, Bukit Bintang, Pavilion KL is one of the city’s premier malls. In contrast to some of the local street markets, Pavilion KL specializes in international brands, especially renowned European luxury apparel such as YSL and Versace.

It’s a fun temple to consumerism for our shopaholics. But in a city renowned for its thundering rain, boiling heat and beating sun, Pavilion KL is a prime escape. The moment you walk through the doors and past the lapping fountains, air-con whips through your hair and cools every bead of sweat.

Beyond shopping, you’ll find plenty of modern bars to enjoy a drink with friends and family surrounded by the mall’s sparkling marble.

20. Butterfly Park

Butterfly Park

Want to dance among colorful creatures, minutes from Kuala Lumpur? Then get along to the Butterfly Park. Set within the wider Perdana Botanical Garden, the Butterfly Park is home to thousands of beautiful, fluttering butterflies that roam around the lush canopies and pond floor.

The KL Butterfly Park is one of the largest of its kind on earth. All up, there are 5,000 butterflies that flutter between the array of exotic plants and hoards of flowing ferns. All are set around the traditional Japanese koi pond.

Beyond, you can uncover a collection of freshwater turtles, a live insect display and a museum focusing on butterflies and insects from across the globe.

19. Petaling Street

Petaling Street

Foodies will be salivating at the opportunity to visit the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, known as Petaling Street. The single street is as big as it needs to be and begins with a giant arch stretching from one side to the other.

Despite being a street, you’ll find the entire stretch to be undercover. A lengthy green roof (known as the Green Dragon) runs along Petaling Street, protecting those beneath as they peruse the offerings of delicious street food.

Those up for a food-laden adventure will revel in the opportunity to experience genuine Chinese and South East Asian cuisine. Popular haunts include Kim Soya Bean that will melt in your mouth and Lai Foon Lala Noodles, whose smell will entice you long before you see the menu.

18. Petrosains Science Discovery Centre

Petrosains Science Discovery Centre

At the foot of Petronas Twin Towers within the Suria KLCC you’ll find the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre. Fun for all ages, the entrance is budget-friendly and grants you access to eleven hands-on exhibits.

Of course, there is a strong focus on Malaysian nature and scientific past. For travelers looking to go beyond the classic tourist experiences and get to know their destination, the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre will help you achieve that goal.

Inside the almost dozen exhibits are spaces that showcase Malaysia’s epic rainforests and mountains on the fun Dark Ride. You can also discover the county’s space exploration, Malaysia’s natural resources such as off-shore oil rigs and dinosaurs that once roamed these lands.

17. Central Market KL

Central Market KL

As you’ve already realized, there’s no shortage of shopping in Kuala Lumpur. But while others, such as Berjaya Times Square, specialized in high-end products, the Central Market KL keeps it authentically local.

The Central Market KL is found within a historic 1800s building, with each shop spread out in stalls across the space. Each shoebox stall has its own specialty, whether that be ornamental woodcraft, batik textiles or native dress.

It’s a wonderful way to experience local culture and atmosphere away from the often stuffy modern malls. Beyond the Central Market is Kasturi Walk. This is a kaleidoscopic flea market where live music flows through the air and haggling is encouraged.

16. Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon

There are a few amusement parks in our list of things to do in KL. But Sunway Lagoon, otherwise known as Petaling Jaya, carves out a niche thanks to its diverse options. A theme park with multiple themes, you’ll find around 100 thrilling rides and fun attractions.

These are broken up into several areas, one home to your traditional rollercoasters and rides, with others featuring wildlife, haunted houses and an Extreme Park. The last two are not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to scream at the terrifying haunted house, or while bungee jumping and running for your life on the paintball course.

Travelers with younger kids will love the Lost Lagoon, which specializes in play areas for little folks.

15. Hang out on a Rooftop Bar or Pool

Hang out on a Rooftop Bar

With its sparkling skyline, home to famous skyscrapers and a rich sunset, Kuala Lumpur is a city made for rooftops. Whether it be for a drink or a dip in the pool, you’ll receive the all-important side benefit of a postcard-worthy view.

Away from the noisy, bustling streets of KL, rooftop bars and pools help provide a fresh perspective in relative peace. The city has a range of jaw-dropping rooftop pools and bars, in buildings you can even call home while in town.

Some of the top rooftops include the Vertigo and Horizon Grill within the Banyan Tree, a modern hotel. Enjoy panoramic views, sunsets and lounges all by the pool. Another option is the Face Suites, which boast head-on views of the Petronas Twin Towers and a jaw-dropping infinity pool.

14. Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is a gracefully designed colonial building that combines Eastern and Western architectural influences, including Moorish and Indian.

Visitors have described its style as unique and stunning. The station was built in 1910 at a cost of $23,000 and served passengers bound for Singapore and other Southeast Asia destinations up until 2001 when it was replaced by a more modern station.

While long-distance operations mostly have moved to the Sentral Station, commuter trains still use the station as do some long-distance companies.

13. Aquaria KLCC

Aquaria KLCC

Beneath the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is a world-class aquarium. Aquaria KLCC is a great indoor attraction, when you’re seeking relief from the heat or if the rain begins to fall. But with the help of its extensive exhibits, it’s an attraction that stands on its own two feet.

The aquarium will guide you through a vast range of ecosystems and unique underwater environments that go well beyond the South East Asia region.

One can venture down to The Stream where otters roam. You can also view the Flooded Forest home to Arapaima and Alligator Garfish before finishing up at the Living Ocean, where sharks, turtles and moray eels can be seen. All told, Aquaria KLCC is home to 5,000 aquatic and land-bound species.

12. Trip to Genting Highlands

Trip to Genting Highlands

Kuala Lumpur is a non-stop, 24/7 city. It will quickly tire you out. To get you back on track, enjoy some fresh air, gorgeous mountains and plenty of family fun in the Genting Highlands.

You’d be forgiven for thinking such a small country, home to an enormous capital city, could have such open spaces. But without having to travel far, you’ll find yourself in the Highlands. Here you can take your pick of hikes to elevated temples, pick strawberries at a local farm or experience the Butterfly Wonderland.

A few degrees cooler than downtown Kuala Lumpur, the Genting Highlands provide plenty of heat relief and fun. Beyond the above options, you can get super chill at Snow City, ride the gondolas for epic views and enjoy the heart-in-mouth outdoor theme park.

11. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

One of the finest modern temples in South East Asia, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, is a sight to behold. One of only a few Hindu places of worship around Kuala Lumpur, this temple’s Spanish and Italian tiles shimmer under the sun alongside the rows of gold motifs.

The facade is captivating. Its rainbow-like collection of colors and statues of gods make Sri Maha Mariamman feel alive, as if it’s constantly telling you a story. Even more impressive is the five-tiered, 23 meter (75ft) entrance, which represents the human feet. The temple, after all, resembles the human figure lying on its back.

After passing through the entrance that boasts almost 230 sculptures of gods and goddesses, travelers can discover a trio of shrines, spectacular idols and the enormous 350kg (770lbs) silver chariot.

10. Batu Caves

Batu Caves

At the entrance to the Batu Caves, it’s hard to shake the feeling that you’re within the city’s biggest tourist trap. In a way, you’d be correct for harboring these feelings, but in this case, you have zero reason to turn around.

After battling through the hoard of stalls on wheels and locals flogging authentic goods and clothing, you’ll quickly see why Batu Caves became the phenomenon it is today. Just a short drive from downtown, the Batu Caves is home to three main caves, with Cathedral Cave being the main attraction.

Here you’ll discover vast limestone walls that rise over 90 meters (295ft), nature’s own version of a deluxe palace or ancient church. Within the walls is a Hindu chapel surrounded by stalactites, both of which shimmer whenever sunlight meanders through.

9. Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square

Where Bukit Bintang marks the commercial shopping hub of Kuala Lumpur, Merdeka Square is the heart and soul of the city’s culture and way of life. Once a vast green space for a local sporting club, the square has been transformed into the go-to place for protests and cultural events.

In 1957, the Malayan flag was raised here for the first time six years before gaining independence. To mark this significant spot, visitors will discover a head-turning 100 meter (330ft) flagpole. Surrounding it are historic colonial buildings that tell the tale of British occupation from the late 1700s.

Like Merdeka Square, these buildings explore the city’s amazing history, including and ancient culture, such as at the KL City Gallery and the National Textile Museum.

8. Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple

Visitors to Thean Hou Temple will find a little bit of China in Kuala Lumpur, since it is one of the largest Chinese temples in Southeast Asia.

Opened in 1989 by Malaysia’s Chinese community, it is a stunning example of Chinese architecture, with its four levels of orange-tiled pagodas. The temple honors Thean Hou, the goddess of the sea.

With a spectacular view of Kuala Lumpur as a backdrop, the temple is a popular spot to take wedding photos; the temple even has a marriage registration office, with about 5,000 couples a year choosing to get married here.

7. Perdana Botanical Garden (Lake Gardens)

Perdana Botanical Garden

A short trek from the city center, Perdana Botanical Garden, will feel a world away from the exciting streets of Bukit Bintang. Also, home to the KL Bird Park this botanical garden is home to a number of memorable sections that add up to an enormous green space.

Spread throughout the Perdana Botanic Garden are orchid and hibiscus gardens, the Exotic Species Collection, Cycad Island and the Sunken Garden. This is just a small sample, with delightful hiking trails taking you between these gardens and much more.

One worth mentioning is the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park. Here you’ll find a rich space packed with vegetation and a riveting pond where thousands of colorful butterflies fly around you.

6. Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Home to over 10,000 paintings, artifacts and creations, the Islamic Arts Museum in Malaysia, is one of the most significant Islamic museums in the world. Over the last 20 years, the museum has been at the forefront of exploring the country’s religious history.

Malaysia may be secular, but Islam is its official religion, playing a strong role in local culture and life. Within the Islamic Arts Museum, visitors can go on a journey back centuries as they peruse the twelve permanent exhibits.

The highlight is the Quran Gallery. It hosts fragments from the holy text that date back to the 9th and 10th centuries and as far away as North Africa.

Beyond the galleries, the two-story building features mesmerizing architecture including the turquoise domes and an entrance strikingly similar to the Persian Iwan.

5. KL Bird Park

KL Bird Park

Those traveling to Malaysia with their kids in tow will want to find space in their itinerary for the KL Bird Park. Great for all ages, it’s especially exciting for the little ones.

The spacious park is a beguiling aviary that more than 3,000 birds call home. At the heart of the experience are native species that allow visitors to get up close experiences with birds that are hard to find anywhere else on earth.

With a focus on conservation and education, the whole family can learn about the importance of these species and the overall environment in Malaysia. The thousands of birds are placed in four sections, with the most popular being Zone Four. Here you’ll find an open parrot enclosure, feeding station and a gorgeous 9 meter (30ft) waterfall.

4. Jalan Alor Food Street

Jalan Alor Food Street

In the evenings, Jalan Alor Food Street is devoid of the bustling traffic that swamps it through the busy daylight hours. It comes to life without the rushing scooters and noisy cars as locals and tourists alike combine to make up the noise deficit.

Like any good food street, the eating takes place as much on the road as it does inside. Come here to experience the best Thai and Chinese food in Kuala Lumpur. Just sit down on one of the hundreds of plastic chairs, try your utmost to fit your legs under the diminutive tables and get your hands on an inexpensive pint.

As dusk darkens, the atmosphere continues to light up. Take your pick of small stalls serving small plates or choose something bigger. Work up some courage and maybe find yourself striking up a conversation with one of the many friendly locals as you dine.

3. Menara KL Tower

Menara KL Tower

The almost 335-meter (1,100-foot) high Menara KL Tower serves two purposes. The first is as a communications tower. The second is as a tourist attraction with a revolving restaurant and observation area that offers stunning panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur below; it is the highest public viewing area in the city.

Trivia fans will be impressed that it took 31 consecutive hours to pour the concrete for the tower base. Travelers in top athletic condition might want to participate in the annual race to climb the steps to the top levels; couch potatoes can take the elevator.

2. Berjaya Times Square

Berjaya Times Square

Centered in KL’s famous Bukit Bintang shopping district is Berjaya Times Square. This bustling hub features over 1,000 shops and a thrilling atmosphere that is bound to excite shopaholics and convince the rest of us to stick around for a while.

The sprawling mall is the centerpiece of a stunning 48-storey building of the same name. Not only will you find shops and endless selections of food but also one of the largest indoor amusement parks in Asia. This makes Berjaya Times Square a place for the whole family who can indulge in some retail therapy or chase the thrill at the theme park.

Beyond is Bukit Bintang, home to street markets, authentic local restaurants and their renowned spa houses.

1. Petronas Twin Towers

Petronas Twin Towers

Once the tallest buildings on earth, the Petronas Twin Towers continue to be the centerpiece of Kuala Lumpur’s dazzling skyline. Shining brightly every evening, the Petronas Twin Towers are a sightly masterpiece and one of the most iconic modern-day pieces of architecture.

From about halfway up the 88-story structures, is a sky bridge that allows you to survey the electric city. One that is both technologically advanced yet still swarming with a buzz synonymous with South East Asia. While you enjoy the spectacular sights, keep in mind, the bridge’s foremost purpose is to keep the towers upright.

Once you have completed your visit, head back to the base where you’ll find the Suria KLCC. It boasts over 300 high end shops, the Philharmonic Hall and the entrance to the Lake Symphony.

kl tour map

Welcome to the Chinatown Walking Tour.

Chinatown is the name given to the original commercial heart of Old Kuala Lumpur. The area surrounds Petaling Street which is a busy street market and one of the most popular tourist destinations for any visitor to Kuala Lumpur.

Your tour begins at  Maharajalela Monorail Station  which might be a convenient if you are arriving by public transport.

Right next to the station you will see the colourfully decorated  Guan Yin Temple  dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion. This temple was built in 1880 in ornate style. People prayer here in the hope of acquiring the Buddhist quality of compassion.

Guan Yin Temple, Kuala Lumpur

Across the busy street, seemingly surrounded by motorways, you will see the  KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall . This whitewashed, domed building was completed in 1923 and is mainly used for meetings and functions. In 2005 it was recognised as a National Heritage site.

KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall

Next up on your Chinatown Walking Tour is a handsome low green building, the  Chan See Shue Yuen Clan Association temple . A clan association is a kind of club for people with the same surname which in this case is 'Chan' and includes 'Tan' and 'Chen' whose names are written using the same Chinese characters. That makes it a very big clan!

The association would have helped new immigrants to settle, find work and so on. This temple was built between 1897 and 1906. All the materials and craftsmen were imported from southern China which is where this clan originates.

As a result the temple is similar in architectural style to ones which you might find in Guangdong province, China.

Chan See Shue Yuen Clan Temple

Proceeding along Jalan Petaling you will see a traditional-looking shophouse to your left opposite the police station. This shophouse, complete with bamboo chick blinds and a saloon-style half door, is home to the  Old China Cafe,  a cosy restaurant serving tasty  Peranakan  food.

The cafe oozes character and is decorated with antiques, old photos and paintings.

Old China Cafe

Further up,  Petaling Street  becomes pedestrianised and lined on both sides with stalls selling souvenirs, bags, shoes, T shirts, pens, watches, fake DVDs, and imitation/pirated branded goods. Selling fake products is of course illegal in Malaysia but these vendors still seem to find ways to remain in business.

Open till late in the evening it is very popular with foreign tourists. You will need to practice your bargaining skills to avoid being overcharged. Compare prices (all stalls are selling the same sort of stuff) and it is possible to get some very good bargains. But if you pay RM50 for a 'Rolex' watch don't expect it to work for very long!

Petaling Street, Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur

You will need to make a detour away from Petaling Street if you want to see  Guan Di Temple  (see Chinatown Walking Tour map).

Earlier you paid your respects to the Goddess of Compassion at Guan Yin temple. Now it is time to admire the statue of the Taoist God of War (Guan Di) which is believed by its devotees to have special powers. It is said that well-wishers who touch the statue will receive its protection and have their wishes granted provided they have a pure mind (having a pure mind is, of course, the hard part!)

The coiled incense spirals hanging from the roof and the general antiquity of the building lends a special atmosphere to this temple.

Be sure to leave a small donation towards the temple's upkeep and to ensure that you do not get on the wrong side of Guan Di!

Nearby is a Hindu temple,  Sri Maha Mariamman Temple  and if you are still in the mood for visiting temples it is worth the effort.

Said to be the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Malaysia, a temple has stood on this site since 1873 though the current building was remodelled substantially in 1968.

Elaborate wall friezes tell tales from Hindu scriptures. The finely decorated entrance gate  (gopuram)  is constructed in typical Tamil style and measures 23 meters high.

If you wish to enter you have to leave your shoes outside and you might wish to employ the locker service to ensure they are still there when you get out. (I usually do not have to bother due to the shabby state of my footwear!).

From here it is a short stroll to  Kasturi Walk , the newly pedestrianised and covered Jalan Hang Kasturi featuring various kiosks aimed at the tourist market.

Kasturi Walk, Kuala Lumpur

The next door  Central Market  is the last stop on the Chinatown Walking Tour and for many people it would be the highlight.

The sign on the entrance says 'Since 1888' but the current building dates from 1933 and is designed in the Art-Deco style that was popular at that time.

In those days the building served as a wet market but today it is probably the biggest and best place in Kuala Lumpur to shop for handicrafts, gifts and souvenir items. It is air-conditioned too which will be a relief after your long sweaty walk!

On the upper level you can find various eating outlets including  Precious Old China (the same company as the Old China Cafe and serving similar delicious Nyonya cuisine) and  Ginger Restaurant  (serving Thai/Malaysian cuisine).

Before finishing up at Central Market make sure you visit the  Annexe  ,across an alleyway at the far end of Central Market, where you can find a number of art galleries showcasing various local and regional artists. In particular you should drop in at Art House Gallery Museum of Ethnic Arts and see their unrivalled collection of tribal arts from Borneo and beyond.

Central Market, Kuala Lumpur

If you have any energy left after completing this Chinatown Walking Tour you can continue walking from Central Market and follow the guidance in my next city trail, the KL Heritage Trail .

  • Learning the history of Malaysia
  • Enjoying the best Indian, Chinese and Malay food in KL
  • Experiencing a slice of rainforest in KL
  • Visiting the gorgeous Batu Caves
  • Shopping at KL’s top spots

This list of what to see in Kuala Lumpur in 3 days assumes that you arrive the night before or first thing and are ready to get out and explore! We list all the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur in the order that we recommend you visit them.

On arrival at Kuala Lumpur airport, book a transfer , catch a taxi or the express train into Kuala Lumpur so you aren’t wasting any time.

If you want something more organised for your KL time, find our list of best tours here.

Today, you are going to explore some of the most interesting places in KL while learning about the past and present of Kuala Lumpur. This includes learning about its different cultural groups.

Merdeka (Or Independence) Square

things to do in Kuala Lumpur 3 days Merdeka (Or Independence) Square

When looking at Kuala Lumpur things to do in 3 days, Merdeka Square will be high on your list. You will want to include some cultural Kuala Lumpur activities, so this is the perfect start.

Merdeka Square is where the Malaysian flag was raised for Malaysian independence from the British for the first time in 1957. There is an enormous flag here today as well as some grand buildings surrounding the square.

The Square is a Kuala Lumpur landmark and so is always high up in places to see in Kuala Lumpur. If you are particularly interested in Malaysian history, this is especially somewhere you should go. It is easily accessible by one of three train lines that run through the Masjid Jamek station.

Address: Jalan Raja, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Jamek Mosque

things to do in malaysia Kuala Lumpur Jamek Mosque

What to visit in Kuala Lumpur next?  Head on over to the Jamek Mosque where you can experience an authentic Mosque. The Jamek Mosque is one of the places of interest in Kuala Lumpur that is recommended.

This Mosque is recognised as the oldest Islamic place of worship in Kuala Lumpur. This is one of the best things to do in KL if you are keen to learn more about Islam. There is also an Islamic Experience centre just outside the mosque.

Whilst it is open to the public, you can only visit inside outside of prayer times and you should dress conservatively.

Address: 109 Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Little India/Brickfields

itinerary Kuala Lumpur 3 days Little India

Your next stop is Little India otherwise known as Brickfields by KL Sentral. This is the perfect place to enjoy lunch after you explore the colourful streets. Little India really is one of the best Kuala Lumpur attractions for families with it’s bright stalls, traditional clothes and amazing flowers. In fact, I’d be surprised if anyone didn’t enjoy it here.

Start at Jalan Tun Sambanthan. You will feel like you are being transported into the street of India. From the people and the colour to the food and the customs, it is certainly reflective of the more than 160,000 Malaysian-Indians living in Kuala Lumpur. Without a doubt, Little India is one of the best places to visit in KL.

You can easily arrive there by train or bus or car if you have access to one.

Address: Jalan Travers to Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields

Petronas Twin Towers

Walking the Skybridge at Petronas Twin Towers

After lunch, it’s time to head to the most famous landmark in KL, the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s can be hard to get a ticket by just turning up so it’s essential to buy your ticket at least a few days in advance ( click here ).

When deciding what to do in KL, the Petronas Twin Towers is a must! Standing at 451.9 metres tall, these twin towers really are an amazing sight. The towers are certainly beautiful from the outside but it’s the city views from the towers themselves that make the towers a Kuala Lumpur must see.

With your ticket, you first visit the Skybridge between the two buildings on the 41st floor before visiting the 86th floor observation deck. There’s also information and models of what you are seeing. It’s a great way to become familiar with the city.

Tours last around an hour. Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to spare before your time slot if you don’t get a tour here. It’s tricky to work out where to enter. Head to Dewan Filharmonik Petronas which is connected to Suria KLCC shopping centre, and it’s obvious where to go once you hit there.

If you get lost in the shopping centre, like I did, look for the Salvatore Ferragamo shop in the directory. There is a sign next to this which tells you which way to go and it’s easy from here.

There is a security scan on entry and anything bigger than a small backpack or any beverages, need to be left at a luggage counter (included).

Entry starts at RM80. It’s worth it!

KLCC Park with Petronas Twin Towers

For a change of pace, head outside to the KLCC Park, another one of the top places to visit in Kuala Lumpur. KLCC Park is a 50 acre garden designed to provide some greenery for the Petronas Twin Towers and the areas surrounding it.

The park is great if you are looking for things to do in KLCC where you can relax a little and escape the busy city. It’s also one of the fun places in KL for kids as there are walkways to explore, a fantastic children’s playground and incredible water features.

This is also a great place to get photos of the towers and to see them from another perspective.

Entry is free.

the Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur Skybar tables

Just before sunset, head to SkyBar and have a drink as you watch the sunset over unmatched views of Petronas.

Always in the top 10 things to do in KL and located high up on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel , the award winning SkyBar has a great variety of cocktails, popular nightly DJ’s and, of course, that view.

The bar is the perfect place to hang out with friends or if you are wondering what to do in Kuala Lumpur at night. If you have a large group there are cabana booths, which are the perfect way to enjoy a drink with friends while enjoying incredible views.

Symphony Fountain Light Show

Kuala Lumpur malaysia tourist spots Symphony Fountain Lightshow

Looking for places to visit in KL at night? You will love taking in this light and water show at the KLCC Fountain. In this spectacular fountain scene, dozens of water jets in the artificial lake will shoot up in the air and colourful beams of light almost seem like they are dancing across the water.

This is the lake in KLCC Park just opposite the entrance to Suria KLCC. This great show runs at various times from 8pm which makes it one of the most enjoyable places to visit in Kuala Lumpur at night. Click here for the latest times.

Address: Lake Symphony, right next to Suria KLCC

In day two of Kuala Lumpur in 3 days, you will see more of Kuala Lumpur including the fabulous Batu Caves, rainforest, shopping and you’ll eat a ton of great food!

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are about 30 minutes north of Kuala Lumpur, situated in the Gombak District and accessible by train from KL Central Station. You can also book a tour which takes care of all the details – all you have to do is enjoy!

I recommend you get going early to avoid the heat and crowds during the day. It’s so serene when you have it to yourself!

The caves are dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Morugan, and is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India. If you walk up the 272 steps, you will find yourself at the top where the main temple is located. It’s quite a walk, but there’s a good reason to take rest breaks on the way up. There are some great views of KL city from here.

Watch out for the cheeky macaque monkeys who call the caves their home and won’t hesitate to snatch your bag or food if given half the chance!

KL Forest Eco Park

KL Forest Eco Park

Ready for more Kuala Lumpur sightseeing? Looking for some more fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur? Located at the base of KL Tower is the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve where you will visit the KL Forest Eco Park.

This slice of a tropical rainforest in the middle of KL gives you the opportunity to see wildlife and view the rainforest canopy and surrounding city from the canopy walk. KL’s urban business is replaced by buzzing insects and birdlife in this 9.7 hectares right in the heart of the city.

The Eco Park is one of the most beautiful places in Kuala Lumpur which everyone can enjoy who visits.

Address: Lot 240, Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur

tourist places in malaysia Kuala Lumpur KL Tower

Always in the list of popular Kuala Lumpur tourist spots is the very tall and spectacular KL Tower. A fantastic alternative to the Petronas Towers (particularly if it is booked out), it is actually taller at a height of 452 metres. It’s the seventh tallest communications tower in the world and the lift moves at a super speed, taking only 54 seconds to reach the very top.

The KL Tower has fabulous views over the city and, from the observation deck at 276 metres, you can view most of the things to see in Kuala Lumpur .

You can buy discounted tickets here . For some some heart pumping activities to do in KL, try out the Sky Deck as well if you dare!

Entry fee starts at RM28

Address: No. 2 Jalan Punchak Off Jalan P.Ramlee, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 50250

Shop At Bukit Bintang

Pavilion KL

Where to go in KL for shopping? Bukit Bintang of course! This is where you will find the best of Kuala Lumpur in terms of shopping.

Start at Berjaya Times Square, one of the largest shopping centres in the world. There are many eating options for lunch here as well as an indoor theme park.

If you want more shops, you can also head to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Lot 10 or Starhill Gallery for some glamour. Some malls in Kuala Lumpur have designer stores, wonderful boutiques and premium shops, but if you are searching for cheap things to do in KL then you are in luck as the Bukit Bintang shopping precinct is known for it’s cheap shopping malls and specialty shops. You can really find it all.

Happy shopping!

Jalan Alor Food Street

Jalan Alor Bukit Bintang food street

When your tummy starts rumbling for dinner, head to Jalan Alor Food Street in the heart of Bukit Bintang. It is one of the best places to go in KL for food.

There are a crazy amount of hawker stalls and restaurants lining the street and I recommend you try as many foods as you can fit in! You may be overwhelmed as you will have menus presented to you every five steps as you make your way from one end of the street to the other.

This street has to be one of the best Kuala Lumpur tourist places not only because of the food and colour, but also the fantastic buskers who travel up and down the street, keeping the crowds very entertained.

I have had some of the best food in my life on this street – make sure you head here!!

You can read my full guide to visiting Jalan Alor Food Street here as well as some of the foods I recommend you eat.

Address: Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur

Changkat Bukit Bintang Street

Changkat Bukit Bintang Street

If you are looking for things to do in Kuala Lumpur at night and are up for a few drinks, keep walking to Changkat Bukit Bintang Street. This short street has many bars with outside seating.

This is also where you will find the best place in KL for nightclubs such as the famous Havana and Pisco Bar. Named Kuala Lumpur’s Piccadilly Circus, the street is considered one of the most established, long-lasting nightlife districts in the city and locals will often recommend the district when asked where to go in Kuala Lumpur and for fun things to do in KL at night.

This street is connected to Jalan Alor Food Street, but note you do have to walk a block or two before you hit the bars. There are many massage parlours on the way if you need a break between stops, although I did get the impression that there may be more than massages on the menu.

In our final of the three days in Kuala Lumpur, you will learn more about Malaysia’s past while also visiting KL’s green heart at Lake Gardens and bustling Chinatown. You can also choose to do a top rated food tour.

KL Bird Park

KL Bird Park

The KL Bird Park is one of the best attractions in Kuala Lumpur (personally my favourite!) and definitely one of the top 10 things to do in Kuala Lumpur. Here you you won’t just see an amazing amount of birds but get to enjoy the huge and beautiful gardens found here as well.

The Bird Park is one of the most fun activities in Kuala Lumpur and houses more than 3,000 birds representing more than 200 species in an enclosed aviary. About 90% are local birds and 10% were imported from countries such as Australia, China, Holland and more.

The Park receives an annual average of 200,000 visitors so you can see why it is a definite tourist attraction in KL.

It is located adjacent to the Lake Gardens, close to the National Mosque and Royal Malaysian Police Museum. You can buy discounted tickets here which also include a transfer from your hotel for a cheaper price than buying tickets at the gate.

It certainly is a Kuala Lumpur must see, so clear your itinerary!

Standard entry cost is RM 75 per adult and RM 50 per child.

Address: 920, Jalan Cenderawasih, Perdana Botanical Gardens, 50480 Kuala Lumpur

National Mosque

malaysia Kuala Lumpur attractions National Mosque

Next stop is the huge National Mosque which is always one of the places of interest in Kuala Lumpur that tourists are keen to visit. The Mosque has a very large capacity of over 15,000 people and is surrounded by lovely greenery within thirteen acres of land.

Having been built in 1965, it is an important symbol of the Islamic country of Malaysia. Non-Muslims are welcome to visit outside of prayer times, and there are robes to borrow if you are inappropriately dressed. The mosque is definitely one of most interesting places to see in KL particularly if you are keen on culture and history.

Address: Jalan Perdana, Tasik Perdana, 50480 Kuala Lumpur

Islamic Arts Museum

Kuala Lumpur destination Islamic Arts Museum

The Islamic Arts Museum is up next with one of the best collections of Islamic decorative arts in the world. The Museum is an important stop in any Kuala Lumpur trip with it’s beautiful white building, incredible replicas of important Islamic buildings and mosques from around the world.

As you explore, you will enter a room where you will see a display of Qurans and Islamic manuscripts dating back to ancient times. In the Ottoman room, you will get to see a reconstruction from Syria from the 1820’s which, for me, was one of the most interesting things to see in KL. There’s a good Middle Eastern restaurant here if you are ready for lunch.

Entry cost is RM12 per adult and RM6 per student/senior citizen. Children 6 and below are free.

Address: Perdana, Jalan Lembah, Tasik Perdana, 50480 Kuala Lumpur

National Museum

Kuala Lumpur sightseeing places National Museum

The final stop in this area is the National Museum which is certainly one of the main Kuala Lumpur points of interest for many people, as you can learn more about Malaysia’s conflicted history.

The museum has four galleries. We found it was easiest to start at A and follow it chronologically. The museum has displays which show things such as early history, the Malay Kingdoms and the Colonial era. It’s very interesting to read about how Malaysia has been held by the Portugese, Dutch, British and Japanese over the years.

After visiting the Museum and learning more about the history of Malaysia, you can see why it is often in guides to sightseeing in KL.

The Museum also has a small cafe. The opening hours are 9am to 6pm.

Entry is RM2 for locals with children under 12 being free. Fee for non-locals is RM5 and RM2 for children 6-12 years old.

Address: Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Jalan Damansara, Tasik Perdana, 50566 Kuala Lumpur

You can read my full review of doing the morning street food tour in KL here.

If you decide to do this in the morning, simply flip the order of this day and visit the National Mosque, museums and Bird Park in the afternoon instead.

Chinatown Kuala Lumpur

In the late afternoon, head to Chinatown, another one of the Kuala Lumpur top attractions.

Chinatown is actually where Kuala Lumpur first started as a city back in 1857 by Chinese immigrants. This is a must do in Kuala Lumpur with its great atmosphere, market shopping and eating. You’ll see why it is consistently considered as one of the top sights in Kuala Lumpur.

Chinatown is also home to a couple of temples. Start at the Central Market, the perfect place to buy Malaysian arts and crafts Next, head to Sin Sze Si Ya Temple, KL’s largest Chinese temple. Then visit Sri Mahamariamman Temple, a lively Hindu temple. There really is so much to see in Chinatown which is why it features in many a Kuala Lumpur travel guide.

Address: Jalan Petaling, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Street Market

Dive Into Malaysia at Chinatown KL

Finally, enjoy Petaling Street Market (in Chinatown). If you love food then this should be in your list of KL places to visit. This is where to go in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur to buy cheap souvenirs or counterfeit goods and to feast on a Chinese meal for dinner. It is a very popular KL tourist spot.

Petaling Street is the heart of Chinatown, bustling with people and packed with various market stalls selling anything and everything. This Street Market is one of the top attractions in KL due to the atmosphere and where you can find fake handbags, football shirts and everything in between!

Address: Petaling Street, Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Visit A Speakeasy

sightseeing in malaysia Kuala Lumpur visit a speakeasy

If you are looking at things to do in KL for couples or places to visit in Kuala Lumpur at night then Chinatown is also a good area to have a few drinks, since the majority of establishments are Chinese (and not Muslim). It’s easy to find many bars, but for something more special, try a hidden speakeasy like PS150 .

Speakeasy bars mean underground drinking establishments that are not always easy to find. They date back to the 1920’s where selling alcoholic beverages were illegal in USA, so these underground bars were created. Speakeasy bars are camouflaged which, of course, is part of the fun!

The PS150 bar is one of the best speak easy bars in KL, hidden behind the counter of an old stationery shop. It’s easily one of the most fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur with your special someone.

BONUS: Day 4

If you need to know what to do in Kuala Lumpur in 4 days or you find yourself loving it so much that you add an extra day to your trip, it’s time to head out of Kuala Lumpur to one of the top places to visit near Kuala Lumpur.

If you would like more ideas, you can also find our list of best day trips from KL here.

Genting Highlands

Riding up the mountain in Awana SkyWay

If you have an extra day and need things to do in Kuala Lumpur in 4 days then consider cooling down in the Genting Highlands.

Genting Highlands is only about an hour in a taxi, but it feels a whole world away. It’s located over 1,800 metres above sea level and has a different climate to KL – take a jacket!

At the top is Resorts World Genting Highlands. On arrival, you can take the Awana Skyway cable car up over rainforest stopping at the Chin Swee Temple on the way.

Genting SkyWorlds review Ice Age

Once at the top, there are many things to do. You can read all about them here.

A popular option is the brand new theme park, SkyWorlds. This park has 26 rides over 9 themed lands. You can read our full review here.

There’s also an indoor theme park and many other things to do.

The easiest way to visit is on a day tour. Find an option here.

Putrajaya And Lot 10 Hutong

Perdana Putra

An easy half day tour away is Putrajaya, the judicial and administrative capital of Malaysia. It’s a planned city and has big streets, grand monuments and buildings and is a place quite different to any other in Malaysia.

A tour is the best way to see Putrajaya as the city’s main attractions are the big, grand buildings and monuments which are relatively spread out. Public transport isn’t easy here so you’ll need a taxi anyway if you don’t take a tour.

I took this tour and I highly recommend it.

You get to see all the sights and be back in KL in time for lunch.

I then recommend you have a swim at your hotel and a little relaxation before heading to Lot 10 Hutong…

Walking into Lot 10 Hutong... the food stalls and seating areas just go on and on and on...

Another one of the places to visit in Kuala Lumpur in 4 days is Lot 10 Hutong. Lot 10 Hutong is where you can taste some of the best street food KL has to offer – in the comfort of an air-conditioned shopping centre.

Located in the basement of the super swish Lot 10 mall in Bukit Bintang, do yourself a favour and go to the food court for dinner. Most of the stalls have been perfecting their recipes for generations, and it will be some of the best food you have ever eaten.

Address: Lot 10 Shopping Centre, 50 Jalan Sultan Ismail, Lower Ground F, Kuala Lumpur

Sunway Lagoon

Sunway Lagoon

If you want lots of fun on your fourth day in Kuala Lumpur, consider Sunway Lagoon!

This big theme park is only a 30-minute taxi ride from the centre of Kuala Lumpur and is the best way to cool down and have so much fun. Families will especially love this one.

Hotel Olympic is the perfect choice for bargain seekers who want to be central to all of Kuala Lumpur’s attractions. It’s just a short walk from KL’s bustling Chinatown, two metro stations and the new Merdeka 118.

All rooms are air-conditioned with private bathrooms, kettles and flat screen TVs. There are single, twin, double, triple and quad rooms available. There are also suite options including a fabulous junior suite for families with a double bed and super cool bunk beds (built to look like a house) with a slide.

Hotel Olympic is colourful and modern with a restaurant and convenience store on-site. There’s free wifi.

If you would like something cheaper and don’t mind staying in a room without a window, also consider the Big M Hotel here . This is also conveniently located in Chinatown.

Getting Around Kuala Lumpur

The easiest way to get around Kuala Lumpur is via taxi or the KL Hop-On Hop-Off Bus which will drop you at most tourist attractions including the ones listed here. Click here to see discounted ticket prices.

Taxis are affordable if they use their meter and you avoid the blue taxis (which cost significantly more). Many hotels and tourist areas have a coupon booth where you pay for the ride beforehand. This is pricier but easier.

You can also use the Grab app to hire taxis very easily and usually for a lot cheaper than a regular taxi. There operates like Uber (which is not available in Malaysia).

LRT station at KL Sentral

For public transport, KL has three train lines – the KL Monorail (which travels through the Golden Triangle, the main shopping and entertainment district), the KTM Komuter (which heads out to the suburbs) and the Putra Light Rail Transit line (which goes from Putra Heights to Gombak). Fares start from RM1.20. There are also city buses but these can be difficult to navigate.

The system is great if the trains take you between places you want to go. The problem for tourists is that this often isn’t the case. This is when I recommend you definitely take a Grab taxi.

EXCEPT, sometimes the traffic is so bad that it’s much quicker on public transport even if you have to take several lines. After talking to several taxi drivers, the consensus seemed to be that traffic is bad:

  • 7am-9:30am, 12pm-2:30pm, 5pm-7:30pm weekdays
  • After 12pm weekends
  • During heavy rain

Inside the KLIA train. Room for luggage and plenty of seats

Avoiding taxis at these times can make life more pleasant especially for journeys where you need to be somewhere at a certain time like travelling to the airport. A great bet if you are going to the airport at these times is to take a taxi to KL Sentral and then the train to the airport from there.

Click here for discounted airport train ticket prices.

Google Maps is the easiest way to work out how to use the public transport to get around.

Final Words

There is so much to see, taste and do in KL. It’s amazing what you can get through in 3-4 days. From the incredible culture, temples and gardens, to the massive towers overlooking the city and the trails, wildlife and beautiful hotels, it’s hard to pick the best place to visit in KL.

Some of our favourite attractions are the KL Bird Park which was home to literally thousands of gorgeous birds, and we were also able to take in the incredible gardens. The Batu Caves is another favourite that is worth the journey just on the outskirts of the city.

Within the city, the famous Petronas Towers is definitely a sight, though not for the faint of heart! Viewing at sunset is a must and one that you won’t forget in a hurry.

The food was a highlight of the trip with Chinatown and Jalan Alor Food Street really serving up some incredible food that you just can’t get anywhere else and for such a cheap price! In the evening, we really enjoyed Changkat Bukit Bintang Street with its array of bars and nightlife to entertain well into the night.

I can’t recommend enough that you take a food tour as well when you are in Kuala Lumpur.

It’s such an easy city to get around and, with so much to see and do, all you have to do is decide what to see in KL on your trip.

I hope you have as much fun in Kuala Lumpur as we have.

Malaysia Highlights

Just finished the wonderful Best of Malaysia tour with Yan, our amazing guide! The trip was everything I could have asked for and more. Transport was good - local buses, train, private mini bus - and the accommodation was great (comfy with all the necessities such as wifi and a good breakfast!) Best of Malaysia covers all the touristy spots as well as more traditional experiences such as the local homestay. We were a group of eight with a variety of backgrounds and ages. The small size of the group definitely helped create a warm and friendly travelling environment. The tour was well-paced with a nice balance of relaxation and adventure. Highly recommended!
