02 Port Moresby - Deniki

Our adventure begins with an early 30min flight from Port Moresby to Popondetta. Using the same road the Japanese Imperial Force used, our 3 hour transit will take us across the incredible wide Kumusi River, finally reaching the heart of Kokoda Village .

We'll pause for a quick lunch, then immerse yourself in history at the informative onsite war museum, followed by a reflective walk across the sacred grounds of the Kokoda battlefield . Meet our expert guide and expedition support team. These professionals are dedicated to setting up camp, managing logistics, and carrying our essential supplies, such as food, tents, and safety equipment ensuring ensuring your trek is both secure and memorable.

Visible from Kokoda village Deniki awaits. Just a 3hr walk, you will pass through rubber plantations via the charming village of Hoi, before a challenging 45-minute ascent to Deniki. Refresh with a shower, have dinner, and retire early under the stars.

03 Deniki - Alola

With the new days light, we break camp post a nourishing breakfast and head towards Alola. Our path leads us to the sacred grounds of the Isurava Battlefield , a site of profound historical significance, where we will take a pause for lunch and pay respects at the Memorial.

The Battle Of Isurava occurred between August 26-31, 1942 and was a pivotal conflict in the broader Kokoda Track Campaign . It was this location where Private Bruce Kingsbury was killed and later awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for his actions.

In remembrance of the 60th anniversary, the memorial was inaugurated in August 2002, marking the fierce four-day conflict that this serene landscape once witnessed. The Isurava Memorial, commanding a view over the valley, stands out with its four granite pillars, embodying the attributes of Courage , Endurance , Mateship , and Sacrifice —tenets that capture the spirit of those who fought on this terrain.

The journey continues with a descents and ascents out of, as we traverse the Abuari valley. Our path meanders us up to the village of Alola. This vantage point offers a magnificent view, directly across the valley to Abuari Village.

04 Alola - Templetons

Embracing the day's challenge, we rise before dawn to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures. Our path leads us through Alola village, where the day's early light breaks across the valley.

Traversing the valley in awe, the Kokoda Track unveils its spectacular views, as we pass a procession of stunning waterfalls. These natural wonders direct us down narrow winding paths, to the bottom of the valley, where we pause and replenish water bottles.

Kokoda is a rhythm of ascents mirroring each descent. We spend most of the day climbing at a steady pace, finally reaching Templeton's Crossing , (also known as Dump 1) situated at the base of Mt. Bellamy.

More than physical exertion; this sector is rich in biodiversity, steeped in history, with countless points of interest. There's also ample opportunity to forge connections with your fellow trekkers and the porter team , whose stories and support are as integral to this trek as the steps we take.

05 Templetons - Kagi

The morning air is crisp and invigorating, as we vigorous ascent out of the enchanting Templeton's Crossing . We ready ourselves for the challenge of climbing to the summit of Mt. Bellamy, reaching an elevation of 2,190 meters.

As we rise through the terrain, if the fog canopy lifts in time, we might be afforded the breath-taking view across the Kokoda Gap . Take a moment to marvel at the sweeping beauty of the landscape, an awe inspiring vista that affirms the grandeur of Papua New Guinea's natural environment.

Veering slightly from the Kokoda Trail , our expedition leads us to Myola 1. This natural wonder, set amidst the dense rainforest, holds both ecological marvel and historical significance, a site where nature and time converge.

The remainder of our hike is marked by a gradual descent along the mountain's ridge lines, with intermittent pauses, taking in the breathtaking scenery. These pauses in our journey not only offer respite but also allow us to pinpoint the location of Kagi in the distance.

Our descent will see us navigating down ridge lines, with opportunities to pause and take in the spectacular views. The sight of Kagi's gardens signals our approach's end, as we are warmly welcomed in the heart of the village.

Sabbath Day Church Service

06 Sabbath Rest Day

Honouring the sacred Sabbath Day reflects our deep respect for the spiritual and cultural practices of our Kokoda porter team. Out of respect and cultural exchange, you'll be invited to join a village church service in the morning. This is a profound opportunity to witness their devotional practices, to be moved by their harmonious, angelic singing—an enriching experience that we highly recommend and one that offers insight into the heart of their community.

As the day unfolds, the Kagi village becomes a vibrant hub of connection. You'll have the delightful opportunity to mingle with the local people, engage in friendly games with exuberant children. You’ll also have the opportunity to venture on an excursion to a spectacular Kokoda Trail natural wonder nearby, a refreshing escape to witness the beauty that nature has sculpted here.

Alternatively, embrace the leisurely pace of the day. Utilise the pause in our journey for personal reflection, tend to any trek necessities, and to recharge your spirit. This respite is an ideal time to recharge both physically and mentally, ensuring you are fully prepared for the adventures that lie ahead on the Kokoda Track .

07 Kagi - Menari

We bid farewell to Kagi and descend to the creek bed. A strenuous climb up we reach reach the twin villages of Efogi 1 and Efogi 2. Take the opportunity to sample and purchase fresh, local fruit—a sweet, juicy reprieve.

Our passage through the Efogi villages gives way to what seems a relentless ascent up a sun-drenched ridge-line, with the humidity settling upon us like an unwelcome companion.

We soon reach the historic site of Brigade Hill. It was here that the poignant Battle of Mission Ridge-Brigade Hill unfolded from September 6-9, 1942. As part of the Kokoda Campaign , this location bore witness to intense combat and each fallen Australian is remembered by a stick adorned with a poppy.

In this contemplative space, we take a moment to honor the past, to learn of the harrowing events that transpired, and to reflect on the sacrifices made. Leaving Brigade Hill, we carry with us a profound respect and a heightened sense of gratitude. We soon arrive in Menari for the night.

Image depicts Brigade Hill - Kokoda Track. A small hill less than 100m in length with sticks driven into the ground and poppies on top, representing all the Australian lives lost in the Battle of Mission Ridge, during the Kokoda Campaign.

08 Menari - Nauro

As we move off, our path weaves through the community, crossing quaint streams, the gentle elevation provides an excellent warm-up.

The true test of the Kokoda Track soon makes its presence known as we face a steep ascent out of Menari. Calculated, deliberate steps are the key to success for the climb, finally the saddle. Its hard not to feel a sense of achievement as everyones pulses race.

Descending the saddle presents its own set of challenges, compared to the climb. Our journey leads us to the Brown River , offering a short respite where the adventurous can indulge in a bit of river surfing.

Pressing on, the Kokoda Trail biodiversity continues to unfold. A vast swamp waits, with its complex network of wetlands. We navigate this delicate ecosystem, traversing over bridges, logs, and additional rivers.

The final approach to Nauro Village can feel like an eternity, with numerous false peaks playing tricks on your determination. But as the distinctive orange hue of the earth begins to dominate the landscape, we arrive at Nauro Village.

09 Nauro - Wa-ule Creek

The day's trek begins with an immediate ascent. With each step, we're introduced to a tapestry of geological wonders—from the open grasslands to the rugged reaches of the Maguli Range summit. The diversity underfoot is as striking as the vistas that surround us.

The echoes of history resonate deeply here as we come across remnants of the Kokoda Campaign —trenches and foxholes, silent witnesses to the intense battles fought over 75 years ago. These scars on the landscape offer a poignant reminder of the tenacity and struggles of the soldiers.

Navigating the descent to Ofi Creek demands our utmost attention. Careful foot placement brings us to a well-earned lunch break, a pause in the shadows of history.

Departing Ofi Creek with renewed vigor. Our route crisscrosses the same river up to a dozen times, leading us to the enchanting Wa-Ule Creek campsite. Take up natural invitation to refresh in the waterholes. Enjoy your last Kokoda Trail dinner as you witness the delicate dance of fireflies.

10 Wa-ule - Owers' Corner

Our Kokoda Trail adventure reaches its climax on this final day of trekking. We continue to navigate river crossings, each step bringing us closer to the daunting base of the infamous Imita Ridge . Here, we pause, readying ourselves for the arduous climb. Take a breath, set your pace, and ascend to the crest, where a plaque recounts the poignant history of this place.

The descent on the other side is a foray through mud, retracing the steps of history down the storied Golden Stairs . Our path leads to the majestic Goldie River. Here, we embrace the water—wading through the currents, waist-deep or more, our clothes authenticating your Kokoda Experience.

The final ascent is a testament to the Kokoda transformative power. We weave through a canopy offering brief respite, gathering ourselves for the last sun-drenched push to the finish. As we step through the Kokoda Track arches at Owers Corner, a surge of elation mixes with a kaleidoscope of emotions—a triumphant finale to an epic passage.

A celebratory quick lunch and refreshing cold drink await, shared with the entire team, cementing the bonds formed over the trek. An evening of camaraderie, laughter, and shared stories, a fitting end to our remarkable journey together on the Kokoda Track .

Where Is The Kokoda Track?

The Kokoda Track , a narrow path winding through the magnificent Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, connects the north to the south of this rugged terrain. This track, steeped in history, has been a part of the local landscape for millennia, utilised by the indigenous landowners. Its significance was further underscored in 1899 when Henry Hamilton Stuart-Russell conducted the first European survey of the area, notably crossing the Kokoda Gap.

The track gained international prominence during World War II as the site of the intense Kokoda Campaign . This critical conflict saw fierce combat between the Imperial Japanese Army and Australian forces, at a time when Papua New Guinea was under Australian jurisdiction. The campaign fostered a remarkable camaraderie between Australian soldiers and the indigenous 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels' , creating a bond that has echoed through history.

In recent times, the Ko koda Trail has emerged as a sought-after destination for avid adventurers.

It offers a deep dive into a world rich in cultural heritage, historical significance, and extraordinary biodiversity. It attracts those keen on experiencing and exploring a prehistoric untouched landscape, that has played a pivotal role in shaping regional history and is one of the last frontiers on earth.

How hard is it to walk the Kokoda Track?

There is no doubt about it, walking the Kokoda Track is difficult. If walking around the block is 1/10, you can expect the Kokoda Track to be a minimum of 7/10 and up to 10/10 in places. The good news is that normal everyday people do it, so its more than achieveable, you simply need to comit the time and effort to reach your goal.

How long does it take to walk the Kokoda Track?

The traditional Kokoda Track itinerary will have you on the track for eight days. However, if you are feeling super fit you can take the fast Kokoda option and get through it in six days. Although the track can be completed quicker, most operators dont offer tours shorter than six days. The quicker you do the trail, the less you see, the less you experience and the risk of injury increases.

Best time of year to do Kokoda Trail?

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a wet and dry season similar to northern Australia. Therefore, the track is typically closed to tourists between December and mid April which is considered the wet season. ANZAC Day (April) is a popular time with many tours booked out with the track, camp areas and key battle sites being very busy. If you want to be part of an ANZAC experience in a remote location then an ANZAC Day tour might be for you. Beyond that, anytime throughout the trekking season is the best time to do the Kokoda Track. You can experience rain and mud at anytime, so it really comes down to your availibility. Obviously airfares are generally a little cheaper outside of school holidays if you are trying to save a few dollars.

How do I book Kokoda Trail?

Simply by booking thorugh us, will score you a  FREE Kokoda Track Field Guide and other track essentials. Choose the Kokoda Tour of your choice, pick a date and book. Should you have a group of 8 or more, you might be able to customise your Kokoda Tour date.

Can you do Kokoda without a guide?

Trekking the Kokoda Track must be undertaken with a licenced tour operator for a range of reasons. The Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) does not encourage trekkers to walk without a tour operator because: the track can vary and be unclear at times, it is not safe for an individual to be travelling solo and a solo traveller brings very little benifit to the local communities.

Who won the battle of Kokoda?

After speaking with many veterans the fought in PNG and veterans that have fought in modern conflicts, the common response to this question is, there are no winners in war. In terms of the battle for Kokoda itself, there were multiple engagments between the Australians and the Japanese whereby the Japanese took the ground and the Australians took back the ground. You can learn more about the specifics of the battle of Kokoda alue="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda" label="" type="url" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda" target="_blank" data-runtime-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda">here.

What happened at the Kokoda Track in WW2?

A very difficult question to sum up in just a few sentences because so much happened on the Kokoda Track its unlikely we will ever understand and capture everything the happened. In short, the Kokoda Track marks the location of one of the most important and understated battles during the Second World War and undoubtley in Australian military history. Australian soldiers fought back and advancing Japanese force in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and pushed them back across the PNG mountains. You can read more indepth information about the Kokoda Campagin here.

Where did the Kokoda Track start and end?

To be specific, the Kokoda Track begins at Owers Corner which is the bottom or the southern side of the Track. It spans a length of 96kms traversing the beautiful PNG landscape and finishes at the northern end, slightly before Kokoda Village at a place called Kokoda Station.

The story of Kokoda – the heroic defense of our nation against a powerful foreign invader – is finally gaining its rightful place at the forefront of the Australian consciousness. However, one can only begin to understand what really took place on that remote jungle pathway during WWII by actually trekking over its arduous course.

After the war, the Kokoda legend lay dormant for six decades, during which time the New Guinean jungle reclaimed many of its historic sites. After years of painstaking research on the track itself, and with the aid of the fast-thinning ranks of both Australian and Japanese veterans, Bill James has played an important part in uncovering the ‘lost battlefields’ of Kokoda. His publication, Field Guide to the Kokoda Track, is regarded as the ‘trekkers bible’. Bill acts as a historical advisor for On Track Expeditions and has passed his extensive knowledge of the campaign on to our trek.

At On Track Expeditions we have Kokoda Expeditions that walk in either direction as there is no ‘correct’ way to walk the Kokoda Trail. The direction will be clearly noted in the itinerary when booking.

Walking North

Upon arrival at the airport we will be transferred to the Kokoda Trail Hotel on the picturesque Sogeri Plateau, just outside of Port Moresby. A trek briefing will take place before a group dinner.

We make an early start and travel by bus to Owers’ Corner, the start point of the trek. Here we meet the porters who will accompany the group for the first time. We descend to the Goldie River and then climb Imita, the first ridgeline of the Range. It was at this point where the Australians, camped on the ridge, turned the tide in the battle and forced the Japanese, on the opposing ridgeline at Ioribaiwa, to retreat. We descend into the Ua-Ule creek valley for lunch and then we climb to Ioribaiwa Village for camp.

The morning starts with a climb to the top of Ioribaiwa Ridge. It was here that the Japanese were forced to retreat through exhaustion and starvation, despite being within sight of the ocean and the lights of Port Moresby, their ultimate goal.

After crossing Ofi Creek we make camp at the village of Nauro, perched on a hillside in the Maguli Range.

descend to the Goldie River and then climb Imita, the first ridgeline of the Range.

We make our way through the Brown River valley, where the main crossing provides the most pleasant swimming hole on the track. We then climb up and over ‘the Wall’ to Menari, one of the largest villages in the Range.

We ascend Brigade Hill, the site of one of the most famous battles of the campaign.

It was here that a night-time Japanese flanking manoeuvre saw Brigadier Potts cut off from the three Battalions under his command. The 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions managed to regain the Australian lines, but the 2/27th Battalion, having been in the battle for only one day, became lost in the jungle for three arduous weeks before finally re-emerging in the foothills near Port Moresby.

We pass through the village of Efogi before making camp at Naduri.

We make our way up and over Mount Bellamy, the highest part of the track with an altitude of 2100 meters.

In this area we see some of the track’s more interesting geographical features: the high altitude ‘moss forests’ and the Myola Lakes, huge dry lakebeds that served as important dropping grounds for Australian supplies.

We make camp at Templeton’s Crossing, named after ‘Uncle’ Sam Templeton, Captain of B Company 39th Battalion, a popular and courageous officer who lost his life in the early stages of the battle.

We pass through Eora Creek village. Now abandoned, the wartime village was a regimental aid post during the Australian withdrawal, made famous by footage from Damien Parer’s Academy-Award winning documentary ‘Kokoda Front Line’.

We cross to the other side of the range on a path less traveled to experience the beautiful village of Abuari, where the 2/16th Battalion held off a Japanese flanking movement while the main battle went ahead at Isurava.

Welcomed by the local families Abuari we experience true village life and explore this breath taking location. A tour of the school, gardens and church are included in this great day.

We head off a little later today with a river crossing down at Eora Creek. We pass through the village of Alola and make camp at the Isurava Memorial Site.

Dawn service at the Isurava Memorial. At Isurava we will hear how the 2/14th Infantry Battalion of the AIF joined the beleaguered 39th in the fight against the Japanese.

The breathtaking Isurava Memorial is testament to the courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the diggers. We then descend the western ridge of the Eora Creek valley, passing through the fields of choko vines to the village of Deniki.

From here it is just a short descent into the Yodda Valley, though the rubber plantations to the village of Kokoda and the end of the track. We spend the night at Kokoda.

We fly back to Port Moresby on a morning charter flight from Kokoda. We visit the Bomana War Cemetery and have a final group dinner at our hotel in the Port Moresby CBD.

After a nice rest, breakfast, swim in the pool and a hot shower we are transported to Port Moresby International Airport and depart this amazing country knowing we have explored the history, culture, people and Kokoda Track.

Walking South

Fly from Australia to Port Moresby. Overnight Moresby Hotel.

Upon arrival into Port Moresby we will visit Bomana War Cemetery and then be transferred to our hotel.

A trek briefing will take place before a group dinner and a relaxing night before an early start.

We take a morning flight from Port Moresby to Kokoda.

We visit the battle site at Kokoda station, where the 39th Battalion made its first stand against the Japanese. In the afternoon we start the track ascending to our campsite at Deniki, in the foothills of the Yodda Valley.

We climb into the Owen Stanley Range and traverse the western side of the Eora Creek Valley through the fields of choko vines.

We pass through present-day Isurava village and on tothe Isurava Battle Site. The breathtaking Isurava Memorial is testament to the courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the diggers.

This morning starts with a stop a Con’s Rock and then to Alola. A steep decent to Eora Creek and a steeper climb to the beautiful village of Abuari on the eastern side of the range.

Having arrived in only a couple hours, the rest of the day is spent in the school with the children, exploring the village or swimming at their breathtaking waterfall – today is a great day to understand village life and be with the locals.

Local foods will be cooked for lunch giving everyone a chance to relax and enjoy the jungle lifestyle.

A lesser-worn track will guide us to Eora Creek Village, now abandoned but a lovely swimming spot.

Now back on the Kokoda Track we continue on until camp. We make camp at Templeton’s Crossing, named after ‘Uncle’ Sam Templeton, Captain of B Company 39th Battalion.

We make camp at the Naduri with its nice high outlook over the villages below.

We traverse a steep creek valley to reach the village of Efogi, the largest on the track with close to 1000 residents.

We ascend Brigade Hill, the site of one of the most famous battles of the campaign. It was here that a night-time Japanese flanking manoeuvre saw Brigadier Potts cut off from the three Battalions under his command.

We descend into the village of Menari and make camp.

We climb out of Menari and descend into the Brown River valley before climing again to the village of Nauro, perched on a hillside in the Maguli Range.

We climb up and over the Maguli Range and descend to Ofi Creek. We then climb up to the top of Ioribaiwa Ridge. It was here that the Japanese were forced to retreat through exhaustion and starvation, despite being within sight of the ocean and the lights of Port Moresby, their ultimate goal. We camp at Ua-Ule Creek.

We climb up and over Imita, the final ridge before Port Moresby.

We cross the Goldie River and finish the track at Owers’ Corner, that’s right, you have completed the Kokoda Track!!

We return to Port Moresby by bus and check in to our hotel and have a final group dinner.

After a nice rest, breakfast, swim in the pool and a hot shower we are transported to Port Moresby International Airport and depart this amazing country knowing we have explored the history, culture, people and Kokoda Track

In the company of our expert guide, we trek across the geographical heart of Papua New Guinea following trails from the tropical rainforests to the rarified climes of the Owen Stanley Ranges. At night we stay in secluded jungle camps close to traditional villages in some of the most remote regions of PNG. We take our time, allowing plenty of opportunity to embrace the history and local culture as well as meet the physical demands of this rugged track. It takes nine days to cover the 96km trail - offering tremendous rewards and a feeling of accomplishment as we complete the trek between the township of Kokoda and the highlands.

Trek Summary

After a pre trek gathering and our first night’s accommodation in Port Moresby, we commence our trek Kokoda journey travelling via road, in the Getaway Trekking (GT) Private Motor Vehicle (PMV), bound for Owers’ Corner; the point where the Kokoda Track commences. En route we visit the humbling Bomana War Cemetery, where we will pause to remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice as part of the 1942 Kokoda Campaign.

Our trek across the Owen Stanley Range, from south to north, commences with a steep descent down to the Goldie River, which we wade across with the help of our loyal Carriers. Over the next 8 days we will trek through and explore several historical sites including Imita Ridge; site of Australia’s last stand, Ioribaiwa Ridge; the furthest point reached by the Japanese, Brigade Hill; site of one of the most horrific battles our soldiers fought during their withdrawal, Eora Creek Village; the site where 99 Australian soldiers were killed during fierce gun battles and Isurava Battlefield; where Private Bruce Kingsbury was killed during battle and ultimately awarded (posthumously) the Victoria Cross.

As a group, we will hold a small memorial service at Brigade Hill and a much larger service at the Isurava Battlefield Memorial to reflect upon the gallantry, courage and sacrifice made by all Australian soldiers. During the service at Isurava you will be invited to participate, perhaps with a reading or poem (should you wish to do so), the Last Post will be played and National Anthems sung.

Our Kokoda Track trek concludes once we step through the Kokoda Arch at Kokoda Village. Armed with a new found appreciation of the accomplishments and hardships endured by our Australian soldiers during the Kokoda Campaign, we will pause to reflect upon the past 8 days.

We will spend our final night on the Kokoda Track at Kokoda Village before returning to Port Moresby the following morning. Upon our arrival back in Port Moresby we will transfer back to our hotel for a hot shower and our final dinner as a group. This evening is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon, what for many, will have been the experience of a lifetime.

‘We are here today, because they were here before us.’

Anzac Day: 11 Days Kokoda Trek

Craig mibus.

Trekking Kokoda with my daughter was the most amazing – awesome thing I have done. I penned a poem about our experience with choosing a Trekking Company and the benefits of going with Getaway Trekking. THANKS FOR THE MOST AMAZING – AWESOME TIME Was looking for a company, my daughter and me, To do the Kokoda, a track you must see, There’s so many out there, just google it you’ll agree, So after time wasted, and a phone call or two, It was pretty obvious, about who, Getaway trekking, for quality and cost, And Laurie the leader, who won’t get you lost. So out on the hill, to train like a machine, I had too many kilos, I had to get lean, On September the fifth, time was up, Jumped on a plane, to get closeup, Packed my bags, with all kinds of stuff, I really did take, heaps enough. Out on the track, you won’t have to worry, Cause the knowledge and wit, of a tour guide named Laurie, He’s got it sorted, from the flights to the feeds, And the porters will take care, of all your needs, Three cheers for Laurie, he’s one of a kind, A better leader, I think, you will not find. Don’t just dream it, do it and see, You’ll be amazed at the scenery, just like me, From the terrain to the history, it can’t be described, From the food to the fun, and a pig on the side, A more caring company, it will be hard to beat, Give them a ring, and book your seat, So 5 stars for the company, 3 cheers for Laurie, If you choose Getaway, you won’t be sorry. Craig Mibus, Digby Vic.

My experience completing the Kokoda trek with Getaway trekking was honestly amazing! The trek leader and PNG boys who assisted with the trek were all so welcoming and friendly and made it a thoroughly enjoyable trip with zero worries. My experience completing the Kokoda trek with Getaway trekking was honestly amazing! The trek leader and PNG boys who assisted with the trek were all so welcoming and friendly and made it a thoroughly enjoyable trip with zero worries. The food on the trek is delicious! I don’t even have words to describe how much I loved the experience of trekking with the company – it was absolutely perfect and I will definitely be trekking with them again.

Greg, our leader was just great! Highly organised, as we’d come to expect from being our Car Club President for some 8 years. Provided excellent insight into the history of the Kokoda campaign throughout the trek, very emotional it was too.

The “boys”, read “men”, were all just fantastic. Really caring about their charges, never a complaint and unbelievably sure footed and tough with heavy packs. Well organised by Humphrey the Trek Master, great food, plenty of it and the whole team was just great. Could not recommend Getaway any higher to anyone wanting a unique Kokoda experience, not just of the toughness of the track itself, but of the Campaign that has made it so well known. Enforces just how lucky we are to live in this great country, and what we owe to those who went to PNG and did not come home, as well as those that did, carrying scars that most continued to hide for the rest of their lives.

Hiking the Kokoda trail is one of those things that needs to be experienced, to be understood. An adventure; one that only those who have experienced it, can truly appreciate. And maybe that’s the magic of it?! It’s the kind of place that sinks deep into your bones and is hard to shake. My Dad and I are so glad that we chose Getaway Trekking as the company to trek with. Our leader, Russell was fantastic. His love for the trail, the history, and helping people experience the best of Kokoda, is evident in the way he leads. Our porters (the Buna boys) are some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. They consistently went above and beyond to make our trip memorable. They crew feels like family now!

Catherine Renshaw

The experience is difficult to describe – it was overwhelming and profound. There is no one thing you can pull out to say “THAT” is what made it great – it was the combination of everything that we did and that happened. The experience is difficult to describe – it was overwhelming and profound. There is no one thing you can pull out to say “THAT” is what made it great – it was the combination of everything that we did and that happened. The astonishingly beautiful country; the inspiring and amazing trek leader; the tough trail; the local boys who helped with cooking and carrying; the way they sang in the mornings; the way our walking group, who were total strangers at the start if the trek, bonded and supported each other; how careful the tour leaders were to make sure no one got sick or hurt; washing in mountain streams; the beautiful campsites; the fireflies at night and the slow dawn that emerged after wake-up call; the silence; the music; the monuments to Australian soldiers; how solemn the serves were; how joyful reaching our destination was at the end of each day and then finally when we reached Kokoda. All the pre trek information supplied to us was excellent, our Accommodation at The Stanley was 5star

Anthony Albanese travels to PNG to walk historic Kokoda Track for Anzac Day

Anthony Albanese will this week become the first sitting prime minister to walk the historic Kokoda Track. Here’s why that matters.

Anthony Albanese will make history this week when he becomes the first sitting prime minister to walk part of the gruelling Kokoda Track.

Accompanied by his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape, Australian Defence Force representatives and a select number of media, the group will walk from Kokoda Village through the unforgiving jungle to Isurava Village.

It’s there he will join Australians and Papua New Guineans for the annual Isurava Anzac Day service on Thursday.

His trip comes with a diplomatic element at a time of intense competition in the region and just days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited the small Pacific nation on the weekend for the first time since 2022.

But as he prepared to board his flight, Mr Albanese said the trek would allow him to pay respect to the Australian service personnel who fought and died during the important Second World War battle of Kokoda.

What is Albo doing?

After attending an Anzac Day commemoration dinner hosted by Mr Marape on Monday, Mr Albanese will begin his 17km track on Tuesday morning.

Although just a small section of the 96km total trail, for two nights Mr Albanese will camp in the same places Australian soldiers did when they fought off the invading Japanese.

On his first day, he will pass through the Hoi Village and camp overnight in Deniki.

Then, on Wednesday, Mr Albanese and his travel companions will continue the walk to Isurava ahead of Thursday’s Dawn Service.

Ahead of his departure, Mr Albanese said being accompanied by Mr Marape “says a lot about how close the relationship is”.

“We’ll be paying tribute to the courage, the endurance and the sacrifice which Diggers made in World War II,” he said.

“Anzac Day is a sacred day for Australians, but it’s also a day that is commemorated in Papua New Guinea. And our relationship is very strong.

The track is 96km long, but Mr Albanese will walk just a section of that before Anzac Day. Picture: Supplied

What is Kokoda?

The Kokoda campaign, which began in July 1942 and went until November, was part of Japan’s attempt to capture Port Moresby when it was an Australian territory.

For Australian forces, holding Port Moresby was crucial in defending Australia.

“Kokoda is the stuff of legend,” Mr Albanese said on Monday.

“As young Australians, we all learned at school the legendary status of those brave soldiers who fought against the odds at Kokoda.”

It began when the Japanese landed in Buna and Gona on the north coast before they made their way over the Owen Stanley Range – a mountain range that separates the northern part of the country from the south.

Over four months, the Australian and Japanese forces fought along a number of foot tracks, including at Kokoda, Deniki, Efogi, and Isurava.

Papuan Infantry Battalion soldiers fought alongside Australians, while thousands of civilians – who became known as the “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” – provided support, carrying supplies, building bases and evacuating the sick and wounded.

The Battle of Isurava – where Mr Albanese will mark Anzac Day – was the scene of some of the most intense fighting during the Kokoda campaign.

An estimated 99 Australians were killed and 111 wounded over six days in August 1942.

Australian forces re-entered Kokoda on November 2, and November 3 is now commemorated as Kokoda Day.

Mr Albanese will become the first sitting prime minister to walk the track, but some of his predecessors have visited the region before. Paul Keating famously kissed the ground at the Kokoda Memorial when he visited in 1992, and John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull both visited memorial sites during their prime ministerships.

Kevin Rudd walked the track while opposition leader in 2006 alongside then-government minister Joe Hockey. Scott Morrison walked the trail in 2009.

Kokoda Track in "worst condition" in 30 years

A view of mountains under clouds, with bananas trees and other green vegetation in front.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Sally Sara: Today Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his PNG counterpart James Marape are beginning a two-day trek along the Kokoda Track, following the journey of Australian soldiers who successfully repelled Japan from Australia's doorstep. The track is a rite of passage for many Australians, but some who guide tourists along the 96-kilometre trail say it is in a dangerous condition. Angus Randall reports.

Angus Randall: Anthony Albanese has a long day of walking ahead as he becomes the first sitting Australian Prime Minister to trek part of the Kokoda Track ahead of Anzac Day commemorations on Thursday.

Anthony Albanese: It will be an honour to pay tribute to them, but also to show respect for all those men and women who have served in the Australian Defence Force.

Angus Randall: More than 600 Australians were killed on the track during the Second World War as they repelled Japanese soldiers from claiming Port Moresby. Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape is also taking part in the trek, joking he'll be the Australian leader's bodyguard.

James Marape: The next possibly 30 hours of our journey together in the mountains, or 36 hours, I choose to be your number one security guard.

Angus Randall: Thousands of Australians walk the Kokoda Track every year. It's a tough hike, with only the most basic facilities across the 96-kilometre trail, but some, like veteran tourism operator Charlie Lynn, worry it's falling into disrepair.

Charlie Lynn: There's not a single toilet across the entire Kokoda Trail that meets the most basic hygiene needs of these trekkers.

Angus Randall: He says it's about more than just hot showers. There are significant safety concerns about the track.

Charlie Lynn: It's in the worst condition it's ever been in the 32 years I've trekked across it. Now there are areas along the Brown River that are potential death traps. Nothing's going to happen until somebody slips into that river and is not found again.

Angus Randall: Not every tour operator agrees. Fellow trek leader Mick O'Malley says PNG is doing the best it can for such a remote trail.

Mick O'Malley: It could always be better, you know, without a doubt. But in terms of safety, that's the main thing that we want is to make sure the Kokoda Trail is actually safe. We're bloody head and shoulders above where we used to be when I first started trekking.

Angus Randall: Gary Juffa is the governor of Oro Province, which covers the northern end of the track. He hopes to use the Prime Minister's visit to highlight local concerns.

Gary Juffa: We see it as an opportunity also to express to them the need for two leaders to understand the plight of the people of Kokoda and the province indeed in maintaining this iconic trail.

Angus Randall: Who's in charge of the upkeep of the Kokoda Track is complicated. The Kokoda Track Authority was established by the PNG government about 20 years ago. It's partially funded by the Australian government. Critics of the set up say Australia has outsized influence over its management.

Andy Abel: This is Papua New Guinea, this is our country, our law, our resources. Papua New Guinea is not a territory of Australia anymore. We're an independent state, a sovereign nation.

Angus Randall: Andy Abel is the deputy chairman of the PNG government's Tourism Promotion Authority. He says the track should be managed as a tourism asset through his department.

Andy Abel: It's a dysfunctional mess and that's what's driven me to right the wrongs and ensure that Kokoda Trail is realigned under the correct government agency, which is the Tourism Promotion Authority.

Angus Randall: The ABC has approached the Kokoda Track Authority for comment. The Prime Minister's trek will end with an Anzac Day dawn service in the village of Isurava.

Sally Sara: That report from Angus Randall and Kyle Evans.

As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese treks the Kokoda Track ahead of Anzac Day, tour operators say the trail is in a dangerous condition.

The 96km track is of major importance to many Australians, but they say without major changes it'll struggle to attract tourists.

The Kokoda Track was the scene of a lengthy campaign against Japanese soldiers during the Second World War.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Explore Russian Summer Life: Visit Russian Dacha!

People from Northern countries soak up every bit of pleasure out of summertime. Its days are numbered, and we do our best to store up the sunshine for the long, cold months that make up the rest of the year. Russians are among those who take full advantage of the brief, hot weather.

At summer’s peak, many Russians don’t venture far. The reason is dachas , our country houses. August brings the harvest for our small garden plots, but a dacha is much more than just an economic benefit: it embodies a culture dating back to Communist times.

Apple season, Traveler from Hong Kong

The dachas is a unique phenomenon in the life of anyone who lives in the boundless expanses of the Russian Federation. A small plot – just 0.15 acres – with a few currant bushes, apple trees and a vegetable patch, a little wooden house with no telephone or running water and a discreetly located outhouse. I’d love to how you mine.

How we’ll get there:

I believe that it’ll be fun to experience the Russian suburban train (electrichka), which is very popular in our country. Electrichka is inexpensive and it might even be faster than a car as it doesn’t depend on the traffic. Travelling by commuter train you’ll be able to see ordinary people and possibly talk with them. Sometimes trains offer you such “free entertainment” as listening to numerous vendors and musicians. But local trains might be crowded at certain times of the day so in some cases we’d recommend you to go with us by car.

What we’ll do:

We start the trip with the tour of Dmitrov , an ancient Russian town, founded in 1147 and called Moscow younger brother. It is located 1 hour drive out of Moscow.

Mushroom hunting

Learning how to prepare a Russianlunch:

Samovar for making tea

First you choose the right meat, then the right recipe for the marinade. The fire has to be started and allowed to burn down until it’s almost out, but still smouldering. If you catch it at that moment, then the meat will roast evenly and not burn.

Meanwhile, the fire keeps threatening to go out, compelling family and guests to furiously fan it with pieces of cardboard. We serve sashlik with baked potatoes, pickled vegetables and of course Russian vodka. Lunch is followed by traditional Russian tea drinking .

You’ll be so involved, you won’t even notice when it’s time to go back to the city.

The tour cost is 200 USD.

Tour price is for 2 people but I can accommodate up to 6 people in this tour, however the price will change.
