Kong Collapse - The Deepest Super Sinkhole In Vietnam

Kong Collapse - The Deepest Super Sinkhole In Vietnam

To reach the Kong Sinkhole of Quang Binh province, visitors must cross more than 20km of forest roads, 6.5km of caves, and 500m of underground rivers with a water temperature of about 18 degrees Celsius.

How Kong Sinkhole Was Found?

The magnificent structure of kong sinkhole, strict standards to explore kong collapse.

Kong sinkhole is located deep in the Tiger Cave system in the Phong Nha - Ke Bang area , Quang Binh Province. The Kong sinkhole was first discovered in 1997 by a British expert during the annual Phong Nha - Ke Bang discovery trip.

kong collapse river

At that time, the only way to reach this sinkhole was to swim through Dai A Cave, also known as Tiger Cave. It was temporarily called a closed sinkhole because there was no way out. Therefore, cave experts could not complete the cave map and the whole cave system became a big question mark.

kong collapse from above

More than 20 years later, Mr. Le Luu Dung, a cave explorer in Quang Binh, discovered an eye orbit of this super sinkhole from a drone. When the drone flew out of range, this super sinkhole appeared with the strange shape of the one and only King Kong of the MonsterVerse. As a matter of fact, Quang Binh was also the place where the blockbuster movie Kong: Skull Island was filmed.

kong collapse cave

With curiosity, Mr. Dung and his group planned to explore the mysterious rocky cavity. The group had to walk for 6 hours and swim through the Tiger Cave. Afterward, they followed the drone, opened a path in the forest themselves, and crossed the steep slope without human footprints by following the footprints of the mountain goat.

"Members who managed to conquer the Kong sinkhole said the path to the top of it was very difficult because the path was full of sharp cat's ear stones. The slope was vertical, one side was a cliff, and the other side was an abyss. But Kong sinkhole was too beautiful, at that time, I could not believe I was admiring a huge sinkhole," Luu Le Dung recalled.

According to experts, the sinkhole is a great surprise hidden in the overlapping limestone mountain system of Phong Nha-Ke Bang as this cave has a unique structure that could only be created by nature for millions of years. Most of the caves have a vertical height, pretty much like other giant skylights with low slopes.

kong sinkhole

The process of measuring the depth of the Kong sinkhole yielded an unexpected result of 450m. At the same time, 3 new paths to enter the sinkhole are being discovered: swimming through the Dai A cave, swinging over the crater or walking, although it is a bit difficult. The Kong super sinkhole has been recognized by experts of the American Cave Association as the deepest sinkhole in Vietnam and has become one of the deepest sinkholes on the planet.

explore kong collapse

Reaching the Kong sinkhole is the most difficult cave adventure tour in Vietnam at present. With many extreme challenges such as walking through the forest, swimming in the dark cave, exploring 3 consecutive caves, particularly swinging from a vertical height of 100m, from the orbit of Kong sinkhole to the bottom.

U.S. cave experts have surveyed, assessed the safety level, and developed their own operational formula for the swing activity to explore the sinkhole. With extremely strict safety standards such as a load-bearing rope anchor system, a 3-wire system including the main swing, a safety team-controlled lifeline, and an emergency lifeline.

kong collapse standards

All safety equipment must be imported from international standard manufacturers. Safety personnel and guides must meet the standards and be unlocked with full skills to handle rescue and respond to unexpected situations.

Participants must meet the following criteria:

Mandatory age from 16 to 65.

No symptoms of fear of heights, hypertension, bones and joints, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Currently, the Kong sinkhole has been open for tourism with the support of experts and porters. Tourists have to book a 60-hour tour of 35 million VND per person. However, only those who pass the medical examination and safety test can participate in this adventurous excursion.

kong collapse path

Because of everyone's safety, the standards for exploring this cave are also very strict, and not everyone can participate, so IZITour also has some suggestions for other tours in Quang Binh as well as equally, if not more, interesting alternative activities when traveling in Quang Binh .

Kong Collapse Experience with Jungle Boss

Welcome to another Travel Tuesday ! I talked previously about what to expect on the Kong Collapse Top Adventure , but what of our actual experience there? Comin’ right up in this post!

Day 1: Arrival, Welcome Lunch, Technical Training, Welcome Dinner

The morning after our Son Doong Cave Expedition, we had breakfast at Chay Lap Farmstay + packed up our belongings. Our tour guide (Messi) from Jungle Boss came to pick us up/take us over to the Jungle Boss Homestay.

On the way, due to the fact that I’d lost my voice a few days ago and was still coughing (sigh), they did me a solid and stopped at the pharmacy so I could get cough drops. (Bless their souls.)

After we settled into our rooms at the homestay, we enjoyed a welcome lunch and got our vitals done/started our technical training.

kong collapse tour

Since it was just the 3 of us, training day was much shorter and we finished pretty quickly. We had dinner that evening with Messi and 2 of our safety assistants + had the evening free to pack and rest up.

Day 2: Road 20 Victory to the lower entrance of Tiger Cave (11km)

Breakfast: crepes with lemon/sugar or chocolate/banana, or beef pho

kong collapse tour

Before heading out!

We boarded what looked like a party/karaoke bus back to Phong Nha National Park (~45 minutes) + hiked ~1.5-ish hours before stopping for a lunch of bread, peanut butter + condensed milk (or jam) + various fruits (bananas, apples, oranges, dragonfruit) + rice crackers, Oreos + Choco pies for snacks. After another ~1.5 hours downhill, we made it to our first campsite!

While dinner was being prepared, we climbed over a bunch of sharp rocks to get to the swimming site. (The provided helmets + sandals were a must!)

kong collapse tour

Due to recent rain, the water wasn’t its usual blue but we were able to swim through the cave to a doline for photos/to explore a bit before heading back for dinner.

Dinner: fish, steamed rice, jungle vegetables that were harvested along the way, jungle vegetable soup, fried tofu, bok choy with beef, egg dish, beef/veggie soup, steamed carrots with crushed peanuts, cucumber dish

Bathrooms were unfortunately a lot less convenient to get to + also a lot less pleasant than the Oxalis bathrooms , so I resumed my Team-Hold-It-Til-Morning-Status that I usually adopt when camping.

Day 3: Abseiling 100m + 3km trek

Breakfast was beef pho! We trekked for about an hour through the jungle (30 minutes uphill) to get to the Kong eyes. My brother is scared of heights and decided to offer me up for slaughter to go first, citing that I “had the most experience” out of all of us. (He says this because I used to do aerial silks , but this was for a pretty short time. I’m also mildly afraid of heights + took up rock climbing as self-exposure therapy.)

Since I’d lost my voice several days before and didn’t have a voice to protest, off I went. The most terrifying part was honestly just trusting the equipment and convincing myself to step off the cliff. Afterward, I was all good! :D (The training that they provided was excellent in preparing us for this day!)

kong collapse tour

Helloooo, 100ft drop!

The second section was just 20m (66ft), but more technical. We got to eat our lunches while sitting in a hammock nestled in a crevice in the mountain overlooking the Kong Collapse! At 450m deep, it’s the 3rd largest collapse/doline in the world + was also our campsite for the night!

Lunch: stir fried noodles with hardboiled eggs/bok choy, yams, pumpkin with a crushed peanut dip/soy sauce, fresh fruit (apples, oranges, dragonfruit)

kong collapse tour

Afterward, we completed the last 50m (164ft / pictured above + below in multiple views) to get to our campsite.

kong collapse tour

We took a boat over to check out the first entrance of Tiger Cave and were able to wash up in the river. (There was an option to swim but it was pretty cold so we were good with staying in the boat.)

Dinner: fish, pork/eggs, pork/chicken dish, seaweed soup, green mango dish, okra, egg plant, spring rolls, steamed rice

After dinner, we lay on the tarp to look up at the sky + saw a flying squirrel soaring across + also got to do some stargazing.

Day 4: Explore Tiger Cave + Hang Over Cave to get to Hang Pygmy Cave

Tiger Cave is so named because when they first discovered the cave, they found tiger paw prints at the entrance and a collection of animal bones inside. (Luckily for us, there are no longer tigers there or this trip absolutely could not have happened.)

kong collapse tour

Breakfast: ramen with fried egg, crepes, fresh fruit

kong collapse tour

After breakfast, we did a little abseiling off Turtle Rock! The little white things in the photo = butterflies! :]

We trekked back into Tiger Cave and swam to the 4th + final opening of the cave! The water was cold but super refreshing and after swimming for a short bit, we warmed up pretty quick.

kong collapse tour

We scrambled up a bunch of rocks to get to the very last Tiger Cave entrance, then trekked about 10 minutes in the jungle to get to Hang Over Cave.

kong collapse tour

I love how those light rays hit! <3

Dinner: eggplant, pork spare ribs, sour veggie soup, egg dish, cabbage, chicken, baked sweet potato fries, steamed rice, and hot tea with fresh ginger/honey made by one of our safety assistants (bless him!)

Messi entertained our exceedingly mature shadow wars.

kong collapse tour

We called a truce!

Day 5: Hang Pygmy back to Road 20 Victory (9km)

Breakfast: banh canh with fish (a Phong Nha traditional breakfast) with more hot ginger tea!

kong collapse tour

We trekked back through the jungle for ~8k to get back to civilization — there were some steep sections but nothing too-too difficult, especially since we took plenty of breaks! The lack of rain definitely helped in terms of preventing slipperiness, but the heat sapped a lot of energy out of us.

kong collapse tour

We had a lunch of spring rolls + fresh fruit + a gala dinner with Messi before we parted ways.

Shoutout + major props to Messi (our tour guide), who is the MVP and acted not only as as our tour guide but also as our very dedicated photographer (legit took ~297 photos of us on the second day alone). He also picked a bug out of my eye and helped me to park the moped I borrowed after my lil accident. In conclusion, he’s awesome. If you book a tour with Jungle Boss , make sure you ask for him!

Woooah Farrah I didn’t know you were afraid of heights. All these photos of you hanging backwards upside down made me think you love it!? Did everyone do the beautiful ballet-like poses upside down, or was that just you? I love all the photos of you like that in any case!

p.s. I know it’s not the point of this post, but the food look incredible! I wish all camping was that tasty looking!

  • Farrah on July 25, 2023 at 1:33 pm

Aww, thank you! :] I’ve been doing exposure therapy of sorts over the years with rock climbing + aerial silks/lyra so that’s helped for sure! :P My brother went for more macho/manly poses! :P

I wish that too! I got so spoiled with food on these trips!

What! This is so cool! I need to go back and read the other posts in your series about Vietnam.

It sounds like you guys were really out in the wilderness for a lot of the trip, especially after that hour long hike on day 3. Your campsite was a hammock on the side of the cliff? I’ve seen that on climbing documentaries before but didn’t realize you could sign up for adventure tours that include it as part of the itinerary, that’s awesome. Were you scared?

Man they really fed you well, I would have been just as excited about some of those meals as I would be for the climbing lol.

  • Farrah on August 20, 2023 at 11:06 pm

Hi! They said ~16 to 65. It’s rated as “extremely strenuous” but if you’ve done long hikes/treks before, you should be good to go! The longest trekking day was 11km (~6.8 miles) and aside from the abseiling, there is some scrambling/swimming (optional) involved too.

This sounds like an incredible adventure. Adding it straight to my list of things to do during my next Vietnam trip – Phong Nha was already on the list, but up to now I was not sure how to explore it, so this is perfect. Recently did abseiling for the first time ever and loved it, so it sounds like the perfect adventure for me!

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

The Baltimore International Seafarers' Center held its annual Harbor Cruise Wednesday night, which included a view of the site of the Key Bridge Collapse from the Patapsco River.

"We visit almost every ship that comes into the port of Baltimore. The seafarers on board are the men and women that make our world move," said executive director of the BISC, the Rev. Joshua Messick. "They bring all the goods to us that come in on the containers, the cars, the trucks, everything that we need."

The BISC, who serves seafarers that come into the Port of Baltimore, said there are currently eight ships, including the Dali that are stuck in the Port of Baltimore due to the collapse.

"We have more than eight ships at a time from the port, but they come and go. So, these ships being stuck has been unique. They're on this side of the bridge collapse and have nowhere else to go right now," Messick said.

Messick said they are serving the seafarers stuck on these ships the same way they do each vessel that comes into the city.

"We have been offering transportation ashore for them. We've gotten Wi-Fi hotspots on board, thanks to our partners in Tampa. We got them on board so they could deliver those. (We provide) pastoral support for those that need it. It's just sort of constant care and support," Messick said.

Messick said the seafarers are often underpaid and spend months at sea away from their families. He said the BISC ensures no human rights of seafarers are violated and provide things like toiletries and transportation off the ship, as well.

"That's our primary offering to seafarers, is transportation ashore. They can't leave the ship without an escort. So, our staff and volunteers have the credentials to escort them out of the restricted zones in the Port of Baltimore, which are all of the zones in the port of Baltimore," Messick said.

On Wednesday, roughly 150 people attended the cruise. Messick said typically, they have under 80 people each year.

"(The bridge collapse) affects a lot of jobs," said Mike Singer, who attends the Harbor Cruise each year. "I think it's to help the seafarers because they can, they can come out and see where these ships are stuck. People from the other side of the world who work on these ships that don't get to go home for six or (so) months and see their families. So you're helping a fundraiser to help them."

"This year's unprecedented in the number of people we have. A big part of that is, it's an unprecedented situation. There's a great deal of interest in what's happening in the Port of Baltimore right now," Messick said. "There's also more of a spotlight on seafarers and the ships that are here now. So, more people are interested in what's going on."

Taking it from the top this session: GxK grossed $21.6M in 77 overseas markets this frame, just a 42% dip in the holdovers. That puts the international cume at $313.6M and global at $485.2M .

In like-for-like international markets and using today’s exchange rates, the monster mash is tracking 55% ahead of Godzilla , 22% higher than Meg 2: The Trench , 13% over Godzilla Vs Kong and roughly on par with Dune 2 and Kong: Skull Island .

The film has really lit up in China – rare for that fickle market — regaining the No.1 spot this frame amid strong competition. The running total there is $119.3M. Rounding out the Top 5 are Mexico ($30.2M), UK ($15.9M), India ($14M) and Australia ($10.7M).

A note about India, GxK is now the biggest WB movie ever in the market, surpassing Joker .

IMAX total is now $40M worldwide.

UNI/DWA’s Kung Fu Panda 4 keeps on kicking with notable increases in markets with school vacations (-32% overall, but up significantly in France and Germany). The fourquel added $15.3M this session in 82 overseas markets to top the $300M milestone. With $300.3M international, the performance so far is above KFP2 at the same point. The global cume to date is $480.3M .

Tops to date are: China ($47.3M), Mexico ($34M), UK ($23.1M), Germany ($15.2M) and France ($11.8M).

Universal also released Abigail in 62 overseas markets this session. That included majors UK, Mexico, Spain, Australia and Brazil. Offshore scared up $5M for $15.2M global. Many markets to come on this one.

Crunchyroll/Sony’s Spy X Family Code: White launched in seven overseas markets with $6.1M lifting the Sony cume to $11M worldwide.

Warner Bros opened MGM’s Zendaya-starrer Challengers in Australia and New Zealand this frame with a combined take of $769K . In Oz $672K from 278 screens served up a No. 3 debut. The start was roughly on par with Lady Bird and over Battle of the Sexes (+11%), Poor Things (+22%), King Richard (+39%), Past Lives (+168%), Call Me By Your Name (+230%) and Licorice Pizza (+1,397%).

Next week adds 51 markets including France, Italy, Korea, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and the UK.

From Focus, Studiocanal and Monumental Pictures, Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black continued its rollout this weekend with Universal adding Italy, Central America and Colombia. The full Uni weekend was $1.4M for an offshore cume of $2.8M to date, in line with Priscilla , and well above Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Judy in the same hubs. Notably, Italy was a No. 1 start with $800K on 443 screens.

Studiocanal markets on the Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed pic include the UK with a running total of £5.9M ($7.3M) through Saturday (we are waiting on full weekend reporting). Projected to retain the No. 1 spot for the sophomore frame, the film saw terrific uptake on Saturday (35% over Friday) and only down -24% from opening. So far, it’s tracking 49% ahead of Whitney Houston and 50% above Judy at the same point.

Other Studiocanal markets include Germany ($2.45M), Netherlands ($540K) and Australia ($964K). Totaled (and excluding Sunday in the above markets as well as Poland for which we do not yet have full numbers), that brings the estimated international cume for Uni and Studiocanal to $14.1M .

We also do not yet have full overseas estimates on A24’s Civil War , however the film is expected to hit $50M global in the next week. Based on early reporting, the drama has opened within the Top 5 in most of its international markets. On Friday this weekend, Brazil launched the pic to No. 1 via Sun, the biggest opening day for an A24 movie. Civil War was No. 1 on Friday in each of France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Norway and Finland. The UK cume is an estimated $4.8M.

Next weekend will be a busy one with Universal’s The Fall Guy starting international rollout while Challengers expands, The Roundup: Punishment debuts in home market Korea and GxK travels to Japan.

AG Brown tours site of the Key Bridge collapse

Attorney General Anthony Brown toured the site of the Key Bridge collapse to view the damage and recovery efforts.

“This is all part of the Office of the Attorney General doing our part, which is going to be to protect the interests of the state of Maryland, which will involve legal actions Anyone from the ship owner; the management company; it may include others who designed, manufactured, and maintained various systems on the ship,” Brown said. “So, at this point, we’re not completely clear on who the responsible and liable parties are. But that’s our responsibility in the Office of the Attorney General, to work with experts, assistant counsel, outside counsel to make the claims to recover for Maryland.”

Army Corps gives tour of 'very dangerous, very complex' Key Bridge salvage site

By Paul Gessler

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 2:09 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE – Key Bridge crews worked Thursday to rig a large portion of steel from the collapsed bridge in preparation to move it to the nearby salvage yard at Sparrows Point.

Known as Section 0, the massive debris piece is from the center of the span. Crews hope to remove it from the collapse site in the next couple of days.

Dangerous, unforgiving salvage work

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers debris vessel gave WJZ a tour of the complex salvage operation on Thursday.

"They were having to stop because of the lightning we saw yesterday," Colonel Estee Pinchasin of the US Army Corps of Engineers said. "The work that's taking place is very dangerous, very complex in an unforgiving environment."

More than 1,110 tons of steel have been removed from the site and taken to nearby Tradepoint Atlantic.

Cranes have removed more than 100 containers from the Dali ship, which remains pinned down in the riverbed with a portion of bridge truss and concrete from the road resting on top. Dozens more containers must be removed before removal of the ship can be attempted.

"There's no breach of the hull. There's no breach of the tanks," Captain Dave O'Connell of the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Ship severed by bridge debris

The bridge truss severed a piece of the front of the Dali about eight feet above the water line, according to Capt. O'Connell.

"The span that's laying across the vessel itself is 5,000 tons," Col. Pinchasin said.

Commanders praised divers and salvage crews for safe and steady progress in challenging conditions.

"With every lift that's taking place, there are lessons to be learned," Col. Pinchasin said. "(Crane operators) make it look graceful, but it's extremely challenging."

2 workers remain missing

Among the tangled steel, concrete and rebar there are two missing construction workers in the water. If anything resembling a vehicle or human remains is spotted, work stops immediately. A team of ten divers is on standy to enter the water if that happens.

“You must do this !!!!!” This is something you must do. We did the Dong Thien duong 7 km walking tour, one of the highlight of this year’s trip. You need to book in advance if you want to do the 7 KM (each way) as it requires a guide, it is pitch black and huge. You can do the first 1 KM that is all light up but you will miss the main attraction if you don’t do the 7KM. http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/photos/5950490/ Visited April 2015
