Luss, Loch Lomond

Cruise Loch Lomond - Luss Circular Cruise

One of our favourite cruises as it takes in the pretty islands of the southern part of Loch Lomond. Learn about the history of the Loch and its inhabitants, spot osprey, sea eagles, deer and even wallabies and sit back, breathe and drink in the view.

Enjoy a leisurely 90 minute circular cruise around the island jewels and explore the historic Lomond landscape – listen to live commentary on the marauding Vikings to feuding clans. Watch out for wildlife and a chance to see deer and ospreys.

This circular cruise departs from Luss Pier and brings live commentary about St Kessog’s Christianity in the 6th century and the Vikings who left a 9th Century Hogback stone in the churchyard.

In the 13th century, the Clan Colquhoun controlled the area so clan feuding ensued, but in more peaceful times they built the village of Luss for workers in the slate and cotton industries. Today, locals welcome visitors who come to appreciate the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

A Simple Guide To Luss: Loch Lomond’s Perfect Village

Published by Graeme on November 15, 2023 November 15, 2023

If you’re heading to Loch Lomond during a trip to Scotland, then there’s a good chance you’ll be visiting Luss village. This wee place is one of the prettiest in Scotland, with perfectly pruned gardens lining the quiet streets. Take two steps away from the carefully manicured streets though and you’re surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.

Visiting Luss Parish Church

It’s by no means the biggest place in Scotland, but there are more things to do in Luss than you might expect. From Vikings to fairies, boat trips to bonnie banks, there’s a lot of history in this idyllic village. To make the most of your visit, you’ll find everything you need to know in this simple guide to Luss.

If this trip to sounds like something you’d like to do with an experienced guide, then send me a message now about  booking a Scotland’s Stories tour!

How To Get To Luss

You’ll find Luss nestled in beside Loch Lomond, not far off the main A82 road. It’s the perfect stopping point to stretch the legs whether you’re heading north to Skye or west toward Loch Fyne. Surrounded by mountains and a particularly large body of water, there aren’t many options for how to get to Luss!

The easiest way by far is to drive and Luss has a large car park which you’re encouraged to use instead of clogging up the streets. It should take you about 45 minutes from Glasgow or 2 hours from Edinburgh.

If you’re taking public transport then you’re only option is the bus with Citylink services from Glasgow as well as the local 305 from Alexandria.

Explore The Streets Of Luss

Something as simple as “explore the streets” might not sound like one of the most exciting things to do in Luss! Trust me, once you’ve arrived at this lochside village, it will all make sense. Most of the cottages were built in the 1800s to house slate quarry workers, but the village goes back a lot further than that!

Visiting Luss

Legend has it that in the 14th century, a visiting French noble fell in love with a local girl. He whisked her away to life somewhere a little sunnier but on her deathbed she asked to be buried back home. Following her wishes, he made another trip to Luss and laid her to rest, scattering Fleur de Lys on the grave. They took root and eventually gave their name to the village.

Whether that local legend is true or not, you will notice plenty of beautiful flower displays as you wander the streets of Luss. If you want a simple walking guide to Luss, then have a look at this heritage trail!

Admire The Views From Luss Pier

It really wouldn’t be a visit to Luss without setting your eyes on Loch Lomond! Head down to the waterfront and take in the dramatic view from the pier. You can see right up the Loch towards Ben Lomond and if you’re thinking of hiking your first Munro then that’s not a bad nearby option.

Things to do in Luss

Stop in at the Highland Art Studios to browse their crafts and gifts. On a particularly hot day, I picked up some dog ice cream there for Molly before we took a dip in the water. You can walk along the shore in either direction, maybe litter picking as you go. Or just sit and enjoy the view on the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond!

Beach at Luss

On a warm summer’s day, expect to find the small beaches here filled with Scots making their own daytrip to Luss. It’s a popular spot for sunbathing, paddling and for kids to jump off the end of the pier! Be warned though, even on the hottest of days the temperature in Loch Lomond is icy cold.

Cruise Loch Lomond From Luss

Since you’re already down at the pier in Luss, Loch Lomond is just one boat ride away. There are a few different options for you to choose from, with a few different tour companies or destinations. My top recommendation, not just for things to do in Luss but as a daytrip anywhere in Scotland, is to head to Inchcailloch Island.

Loch Lomond Ferry

Molly and I did this trip with Cruise Loch Lomond in 2022 and it’s one of my favourite ever daytrips. We got an entertaining commentary as the boat slowly plodded past different islands in the loch. Unfortunately we didn’t spot the wallabies, but we did get a peek at the resident ospreys!

Inchcailloch Church

Once we arrived at Inchcailloch Island, we hiked to the historic Clan MacGregor graveyard. Then it was time to take in some beautiful, scenic views. After a picnic and a paddle down by the beach, we were picked up again by Cruise Loch Lomond and head back to Luss.

Find The Viking Gravestone

Back on dry land, no guide to Luss would be complete without a visit to Luss Parish Church. I’m not trying to convert you, but this spot is special for two reasons. The first is found in the graveyard, known as the Viking gravestone or Hogback and it’s around 900 years old.

Luss Viking Hogback

These are incredibly rare, carved into the shape of a Scandinavian Longhouse with intricate designs along the side and what look like roof shingles on top. It’s like a blend of cultures, with the stone carving skills of the Scots meeting a Norse design.

Guide to Luss Church

The other reason to stop here is to see inside the church itself! A very early chapel is believed to have been founded here by St Kessog around 1500 years ago. This current church dates to 1875, built by the local Colquhoun laird to commemorate his father’s death on the loch. Look up and you’ll notice the roof looks like an upturned boat.

Discover The Loch Lomond Faerie Trail

If you’ve got children to keep entertained, then head to the Loch Lomond Faerie Trail . Take a walk through the woodland around Luss, searching for Scottish fairies which shouldn’t be too hard to find. It’s primarily aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 10, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all enjoy it!

They’ll hunt for clues left behind by the fairies and solve little puzzles. Look for secret doorways, listen for fairies chattering away and expect a magical experience. It should take anywhere between one and three hours to explore the faerie trail.

Luss Faerie Trail

You can find the silver trailer selling tickets in the main Luss car park. It’s open between 9.30am and 3.30pm most days during the tourist season and wellies or firm boots are advised. There is a festive version of the route available during December as well, just make sure you wrap up warm!

A brand new add on is the Faerie Tale Farm which is included in the price of your ticket. You’ll find Highland Cows, Alpacas, Donkeys and more to finish off your day exploring Luss.

Places To Eat In Luss

For a small village, you’ll find plenty of places to eat in Luss.

The Village Rest – The most popular place to eat in Luss is easily the Village Rest, serving from breakfast and lunch as well as a takeaway menu. Dog friendly and delicious food.

Sassenach Coffee – If you need a coffee and cake to perk you up before you wander the streets, you’ll find the excellent Sassenach Coffee van in the main car park!

Places To Eat In Luss

Loch Lomond Arms – Another option for lunch or an evening meal is the Loch Lomond Arms, serving a large menu including very traditional Scottish food!

Coach House Coffee Shop – For soups, coffee and cakes in a very dog friendly spot, head to the Coach House Coffee Shop!

Places To Stay In Luss

Why not turn your daytrip into a whole weekend by finding a place to stay in Luss?

Loch Lomond Arms – Back to the Loch Lomond Arms, this 200 year old inn is a great, central place to stay!

Alderdale B&B – If you enjoyed the look of all the quaint cottages in Luss, then how about staying in one of them?

Where to stay in Luss

Cameron House Hotel – Looking for some 5* luxury accommodation? Look no further than Cameron House Hotel, just a short trip along the banks of Loch Lomond.

Luss Campsite – If you want the other end of the luxury scale, pitch your tent or caravan at Luss Campsite. Just be aware that it’s not far from the main road.

If these locations have caught your interest, how about visiting them on a Scotland’s Stories Tour?

Hi I’ve been to Luss a few times when I was wee. We went to the beaches and explored the village round about its beautiful x. I was also told that’s where they filmed Take The High Road x.

Loch Cruises

No trip to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park would be complete without a cruise across a loch. Sit back, relax and take in the beautiful and dramatic scenery. On Loch Lomond, opportunities to cruise the loch are available from Balloch (on the River Leven just opposite the railway station or from Loch Lomond Shores, and from Tarbet, Inversnaid, Luss and Rowardennan.

For trips on Loch Katrine  cruises run from Trossachs Pier near Aberfoyle, to Stronachlachar and back. Choose from circular cruises, or a number of themed journeys like sunset, island discovery, wildlife and history.

There’s also a short ferry from Balmaha to Inchcailloch  – a nature reserve with shady woodland walks, sandy beaches, wildlife and a history of saints and early Christianity. And speed boat trips if you fancied something faster, available from Luss Pier.

lomond-duchess-boat-on-loch

As well as the cruises, there’s a scheduled waterbus service providing regular ferry services between both shores of Loch Lomond at numerous disembarkation points – Inveruglas, Inversnaid, Tarbet, Rowardennan, Luss, Balmaha, and Balloch.

These services have been designed to provide visitors with the flexibility of combining trips on the loch, with breaks on shore – for lunch stops, picnics, pub visits, short (and long) walks, cycle routes (bring your bike or rent one locally), exploring local history (Rob Roy in particular) and wildlife, even bagging a Munro – or to tie-in with train stations (Balloch and Tarbet).

The waterbus service even stretches across two lochs – combining Lochs Lomond and Katrine, linking Tarbet and Trossachs Pier via Inversnaid and Stronachlachar – mind you’ll need to walk or cycle the 5 miles between the two lochs, twice!

If you fancy being captain of your own vessel, then why not hire a boat? Self-drive rentals are available from the lagoon at Loch Lomond Shores, while you can hire a speed boat complete with driver/guide at Luss Pier. Or power your own with row boats at Balmaha and canoes at Loch Lomond Shores.

The northern end of the loch is narrower and more mountainous than the south end which is broader and flatter so my suggestion would be the north end from Tarbet which is also closer to Crianlarich, something like.

https://www.cruiselochlomond.co.uk/cruise/tarbet-circular

If using a satnav be aware there are many Tarbet's so make sure you pick the correct one!

Thanks looks brilliant and only 25 minutes drive from our Hotel

loch lomond boat trips luss

You’ve also got this one…

https://www.lochkatrine.com/

Also look at boat trips in Loch Katrine which is beautiful.

If you make a circular tour, you can include Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine and a few other lochs in the Trossachs.

If you start southwards, you can return via Drymen, Aberfoyle, Kilmahog (near Callander)

Thanks but that might be pushing it. The wife's not a lover of boats so I'm doing well to get her on one.

https://www.cruiselochlomond.co.uk/cruise/tarbet-circular The CLL crew are always helpful and knowledgable. Cruise times: see below re parking!

The site at Tarbet is being redeveloped at the moment and the work is major. Uncertain when it will be completed, expected 'late summer'. The works will improve things for visitors in the longer term but meantime there is much reduced parking - maybe 20% of what was available - so that can be an issue. The site gets busier with people squeezing their cars in as the day goes on. If you can book an early boat trip, then do that as a ticket on the boat is no guarantee of a parking space and there are virtually no alternative parking areas within walking distance of the pier for the boats.

See https://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/tarbet-pier-visitor-site-regeneration-faq/

So since you'll be just up the road, try to book 10:30 am boat as parking may well be easier at that point.

And if sounds a bit off-putting, you could always book a later (latest in the afternoon, say) cruise on Loch Katrine instead: parking plentiful and you can reach the site via Glen Dochart, Glen Ogle, Strathyre and down into the Trossachs making it a great day out with fabulous scenery whatever the weather. Also lunch and cafe options available, including at the Loch Katrine site.

That boat trip from Tarbet is glorious for scenery...much as I love Loch Katrine, I don't think overall it's in quite the same league.

INCHCAILLOCH ISLAND - HAVE YOU BEEN? ???? This is one of our favourite ‘Explorer cruises’, a 45 minute sailing from the pretty village of Luss, sailing past the islands of Loch Lomond and arriving at Port Bawn on Inchcailloch. With a fantastic beach and picnic spot it’s a great place to relax and take in the beauty of the loch. There are pathways that lead you round the island, ideal for families with little ones. Keep an eye out for fallow deer, woodpeckers, otter and osprey, we have even seen white deer here! ⛴ Daily sailings from Luss at 10.00am, 11.30am and 1.45pm Return boat departs at 12.00pm, 1.45pm and 3.15pm. ???? Tickets: £18.00 adult return, Child: £10.00, family £54.00 ???? Dogs welcome but must be kept on a lead on Inchcailloch Island Go to: https://www.cruiselochlomond.co.uk/island-explorer ???? DID YOU KNOW that all our skippers give a live commentary on our cruises? So as well as taking you to the most amazing locations around the loch, they’ll tell you the history of the area, the wildlife you might spot and there might even be the odd wee joke or two thrown in! Here’s Skipper Archie showing us how it’s done.

We welcomed @scotlands_stories on board with us last week and here’s their story of their time on Inchcailloch Island…..‘ How can I get a picture with this view of Loch Lomond?’ I hear you ask! Well, while everybody else is on the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond, you're going to need to get yourself to Inchcailloch, one of the 22 islands in the middle. Molly and I took the scenic journey by booking a trip with @cruiselochlomond which left from the wee village of Luss on the west bank. The trip took a wee tour around the loch with expert commentary on some of the other islands along the way. No wallabies to be seen, but the Ospreys were out and about! Inchcailloch has been on my bucketlist for a while and it didn't disappoint, especially on a day like this. It's not a huge island, but there's still stories to discover. Buried in the undergrowth, but easy to find, you'll come across a ruined church and a jumble of old gravestones. This is the church of St Kentigerna, the mother of St Fillan who allegedly established a little chapel on this site in the 8th century. Inchcailloch is said to be named after her, translating as the island of the old woman or cowled woman meaning a nun! Amazing to think this was once a parish church and locals would row across the loch every Sunday up until 1621, true dedication. If you can read through the moss then you'll find a lot of Macfarlanes and Macgregors buried here, including Rob Roy's uncle once the Macgregor Clan Chief. After a couple hours of wandering the forest tracks and climbing to the summit of this little hill for the panorama, we still had an hour before Cruise Loch Lomond came to get us. Plenty of time for a wee dip in the shallow bay at Port Brawn, much needed for both Molly and I to cool off. This was easily up there with one of the most enjoyable things I've done all year and hopefully it's convinced you to get out there the next time you're visiting Loch Lomond and explore! It can get busy so book ahead and you can look through a range of boat trips like this through the @stirlingalive website - www.yourstirling.com I reckon Molly would agree that this summer, happiness is a bookable experience!
