Q: I’m hoping to plan several quick weekend ski trips next season from my home near Los Angeles. Which resorts are closest to major airports?  —Andrew H., Glendale, Calif.

A: The conventional wisdom on weekend ski trips by plane is 1) choose a major airport 2) fly nonstop, and 3) rent a car. The point being that you want to cut down on time spent getting to the slopes and maximize time on them while not spending an arm and a leg on such a short trip. Some of that advice is still accurate, but things are changing slightly in this world where the pandemic is waning and travel is ramping up. Spoiler: Flying into smaller regional airports just might save you time and hassle, and not cost very much more in the long run. We’ll take a look at both options below, and you can decide which works best for you.

Flying Into Metropolitan Hubs

  • LAX to Salt Lake City: Multiple airline and flight options; affordable fares; quick and convenient access to multiple ski resorts
  • LAX to Reno-Tahoe: Multiple airline and flight options; quick and convenient access to multiple ski areas
  • LAX to Denver: Multiple airline and flight options; travel from the airport to ski resorts is not as quick or convenient due to I-70 traffic

But first, let’s consider larger airports. Flying into a major international airport can keep costs down, give you some flexibility around flight times, and offer better rental-car options. To that end, you simply can’t beat Salt Lake City International Airport for accessibility and efficiency. Technically, Little Cottonwood Canyon’s Snowbird is the closest to the airport, at 33 miles, and Alta is located right next door. What’s more, the airport unveiled some major upgrades last spring , making an already efficient airport even more user-friendly.

"None"

Next-door in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude and Brighton are two additional convenient options, and are likely to be less crowded than the Little Cottonwood Canyon resorts. But if having more powder to yourself is equally as important as convenience—you’re willing to go just a bit farther—consider Snowbasin (47 miles from the airport) or Powder Mountain (63 miles).

Related: Where to Sleep, Eat, Drink, and Play in Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows

Tahoe is another region to consider thanks to Reno-Tahoe International Airport ‘s proximity to several Nevada and Lake Tahoe resorts. Mt. Rose is 23 miles away—less than a half-hour drive from airport. It’s slightly farther to Tahoe’s North Shore resorts, but not too much: 42 and 47 miles, respectively, to Northstar and Squaw Alpine. Traffic is the unknown factor here. If you hit it right, you can be checking into your hotel within an hour of leaving the airport.

"Skier at Mt. Rose"

Colorado’s Front Range resorts are plagued by I-70 traffic most winter days, so Denver International Airport, while a major hub with tons of (cheap) flights, puts you at least two hours from the closest major resort. And that’s with no traffic, which is basically unheard of these days.

Flying Into Regional Airports

  • LAX to Aspen/Pitkin: access to Aspen Snowmass ski resorts
  • LAX to Yampa Valley: access to Steamboat Ski Resort
  • LAX to Gunnison-Crested Butte: access to Crested Butte Mountain Resort

Here’s where you should consider regional airports. Air service has really picked up over the last few years at some of these secondary hubs, and while you might pay more in fares, you could opt to forgo a rental car (which are crazy expensive due to low inventory right now) and use a shuttle service instead.

"None"

Aspen/Pitkin Regional Airport is less than 10 minutes from downtown Aspen, and has nonstop service from LAX and several other major cities in the winter. Yampa Valley Regional Airport , served by United and American, in addition to Southwest, is 30 miles from Steamboat. There’s nonstop weekend service from LAX, as well. And Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport is only 30 miles south of Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

On That Topic: Where to Sleep, Eat, Drink, and Play in Aspen

Just for fun, we priced out weekend flights in January between LAX and Aspen and compared it to the same weekend flying into DIA. A nonstop flight on United into Aspen/Pitkin costs $464; a similar flight to Denver is $250—but you still have to travel the 3.5 hours to Aspen. You could add a rental car—don’t forget the AWD—for about $100/day, or book a shuttle for $150 per person each way, but you’ve already burned through your flight savings. What’s more, smaller airports also mean easy in-and-out, fewer baggage hassles, and shorter lines—especially over the next year or so as the return to travel continues to surge.

Now that you’ve got the tools and inspiration to start planning those weekends, the real challenge will be how much terrain you can tick off before you have to catch your return flight.

15 of the best weekend ski breaks in Europe

Skiing doesn’t have to be a week-long affair. here’s where to go if you’ve only got a few days of winter spare.

long weekend ski trips

T here are few travel experiences quite as miraculous as a ski weekend. There you are on Friday morning, trapped in your routine, stuck at the bottom of the year. Suddenly — a day later — you’re gliding down a mountain in a blaze of bright white glory, or sipping something fizzy on the roof of the world. Fast-forward to Monday, and you’re back at work, with a grin as wide as the Alps plastered across your face. “Did that really happen?” you wonder. “And if it did, when can I do it again?”

Of course, a lot of planning goes into making ski weekends a success. A lot of rushing about as well. And one of the first steps down that path is to pick your resort carefully: one that’s close to an Alpine airport and has easily accessed slopes that suit how you ski or snowboard. Its hoteliers must be willing to take bookings for fewer than seven nights too. We’ve found options for all skiing tastes and abilities. These are the best European skiing weekends.

1. Hochfügen, Austria

Fly to Innsbruck Best for powder snow and sundecks Less than an hour from Innsbruck airport, Hochfügen is the first ski area you hit at the mouth of the long, deep Zillertal. And like the valley in which it’s set, Hochfügenknows variety is one of its strongest suits. The village itself is tiny — a hamlet of hotels, it’s squirrelled away in a forested side-valley and is something of a schneeloch : a snowhole that snags more than its share of blizzards and has a local reputation for deep powder. Stay in the four-star Hotel Lamark and you’ll enjoy low-key nights and (potentially) epic days thanks to Hochfügen’s unrivalled off-piste infrastructure. This includes a beginner’s freeride area as well as free off-piste guiding at the weekends, transceiver training and an info point for avalanche updates. Meanwhile 60 miles of prepared pistes await if conditions aren’t right or you’re not ready to ski deep snow.

Head to Kaltenbach in the main valley and you’ll find a lower, more workaday base with access to the sunnier, less-forested side of the ski area. It’s also closer to the Kristalhütte — one of Austria’s coolest mountain bars and restaurants with sunloungers on its terrace, a convivial circular fireplace indoors and a piste-side sauna.

2. Ortisei, Italy

Fly to Bolzano Best for magnificent food and scenery Admittedly, Sky Alps’ Wednesday and Sunday flights from Stansted to Bolzano don’t suit a weekend trip, but for a three or four-night break they make skiing the Dolomites a doddle. Transfer times up to Ortisei are under an hour and Santa Cristina is only eight minutes further on.

The former is a proper market town. Peppered with churches, cobbled squares and pretty, painted houses, it offers direct access up to gentle, early-intermediate skiing on the Alpe di Siusi plateau. The latter is a more of a sprawling holiday village. It’s a better base for plucky, athletic intermediates, set on skiing the heart of the Dolomiti Superski area — bombing down the Saslong World Cup race course, and skiing over to Canazei on broad and flattering pistes.

Meanwhile, both will give you the chance to feast in piste-side restaurants such as Rifugio Emilio Comici (above Santa Cristina) and Mont Sëuc on Alpe di Siusi. You’ll be staring in slack-jawed wonder at the scenery too. The first sight of the Dolomites’ soaring, slab-sided crags will blow your ski boots off.

3. Laax, Switzerland

Fly to Zurich Best for snowboarders For years, Laax has been the go-to resort for weekending snowboarders and freestylers from Zurich, but it’s not the natural terrain that draws them. It’s the mighty NoName and P60 snow parks, which are home to one of Europe’s biggest and best kept superpipes as well as every conceivable kind of kicker, box and rail. Performance levels are sky high, helped by the coaches at the resort’s Freestyle Academy. So, if you’re a wannabe acrobat and want to measure yourself against the best, book at least one weekend on the Crap Sogn Gion — which is, by the way, the name of the mountain. Lower down, accommodation includes the Riders hotel, which has bunk rooms for four as well as doubles; the parties in the nightclub below are legendary.

4. Innsbruck, Austria

Fly to Innsbruck Best for instant access to the slopes Step off the plane at Innsbruck airport, and you can see where you’ll be skiing as you walk towards passport control. Notice that round-topped peak, six miles southeast of the runway? That’s the Patscherkofel, where Franz Klammer won Olympic Downhill gold in 1976. He may have flirted with disaster from start to finish, but the slopes down which he hurtled are for the most part broad and steady, provided everyone puts in a few turns.

Confident intermediates will like it best: especially if they book into the Sporthotel Igls in the mountain suburb of Igls, and sign up for a run on the local Olympic bobsleigh. It’s like being strapped to a bullet and fired down the barrel of a gun. Meanwhile, off-pisters should fix their gaze firmly on the looming crags of the Nordkette, immediately north of the city, and pray for fresh snow. When there’s powder, the avalanche-protected chutes near the top offer some of the most exciting, eye-popping descents in the Austrian Alps. For those, Adlers Hotel in the city centre is the place to stay. It’s only ten minutes’ walk from the funicular railway to the Nordkette, and has a rooftop bar on the 13th floor.

5. Megève, France

Fly to Geneva Best for sybarites Megève is one of the great smoothies of the skiing world. It was developed by the Rothschild family in the 1920s, and its luxury hotels and broad, ego-boosting pistes have long been favoured by the French elite — especially those who like their gastronomic lunches as much as their snow. That said, there’s excellent, tree-lined intermediate skiing here, only 70 minutes’ drive from Geneva airport: and if you check into the central, rustic-luxe Hotel Mont Blanc Megève, and splash out on lunch at the Flocons de Sel (which has three Michelin stars), you may well fall in love with Megève too. Just be sure to head there mid-winter, ideally in January or February, as most of the slopes lie between 1,100m and 2,100m, which is low by modern standards.

• Best ski resorts in France

6. Chamonix, France

Fly to Geneva Best for experts Chamonix always gets a mention when the conversation turns to ski weekends. And no wonder. Barely an hour from Geneva, this bright-eyed, up-for-anything town crouches beneath the mightiest of all the Alps — Mont Blanc — and serves up several of their most exacting and exhilarating off-piste descents. If you’ve got the legs to ski 2,000 vertical metres of steep powder, and the budget to afford a top-rated IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide, then book into the Hotel Les Grands Montets, next to the ski lifts in Argentière — just north of Chamonix town — and get set for a proper adventure (which will probably involve some ski touring until the Grands Montets cable car is replaced in 2026).

If conditions are right, this could be the pinnacle of your skiing career. Intermediates will, by contrast, wonder what all the fuss is about. Yes, there are several areas of lift-serviced pistes scattered along the Chamonix valley, but they’re all quite small, and getting between them by car or local bus is a bore. Stay in the outlying village of Les Houches and ski its steady, tree-lined slopes if you must. But it’s better to save a visit for your more skilful future, and enjoy the likes of Morzine, Megève and La Clusaz in the meantime.

7. Courmayeur, Italy

Fly to Turin Best for la dolce vita Courmayeur is about ten miles from Chamonix, via the Mont Blanc tunnel. But it’s a very different resort. Here, on the sunny side of the Alps, the emphasis is on good food, stylish piste-skiing and the evening passeggiata , up and down the traffic-free Via Roma. Yes, of course, there are epic off-piste descents to be tackled here too, most memorably on the Mont Blanc massif, linked to the valley by the Skyway cable car. But for most visitors the aim on a Courmayeur weekend is to make merry on the relatively steep pistes of its pocket-sized ski area and enjoy a good lunch in one of its fêted mountain restaurants. Meanwhile, down in town, the swanky, five-star Massif is a two minute-walk from the key lift up to the slopes. Those on a tighter budget should target the popular three-star Bouton d’Or.

• Best ski resorts in Italy

Skiers at Courmayeur (Lorenzo Belfrond)

8. Pila, Italy

Fly to Turin Best for bargain hunters (and historians) A favourite school-trip destination, Pila is also a canny choice for weekenders on a tight budget. It’s only 70 minutes’ drive from Turin airport, and the journey is even shorter if you stay in the fascinating valley town of Aosta — linked to the pistes by gondola. Never mind the business-park atmosphere on the outskirts: in the centre, the town’s Roman walls are almost intact, as is its Augustan triumphal arch. It’s quite a change from your average ski resort. Up high, the lift system serves surprisingly varied terrain.

No-one would pretend it’s big, but it’s home to several short, sharp black-rated pistes as well as long easy blues and — its strongest suit — fast and enticing reds. The views across the Aosta Valley are magnificent too. If you can live with its four-night minimum stay requirement at weekends, the pretty little Hotel Della Nouva is a good spot in the ski village. Down in Aosta, Maison Boch is a chic B&B just off the main town square.

In the the Aosta Valley (Dario Mazzoli)

9. Engelberg, Switzerland

Fly to Zurich Best for off-pisters The Laub is what makes Engelberg magnificent. An extraordinary off-piste run down the central section of the Titlis mountain, it drops at a steady pitch through 1,100 vertical metres — unbroken by any cliff bands or forests. When the snow’s good and deep, you’ll make turn after joyous turn until your legs explode. Coupled with short transfer times (75 minutes by car from Zurich airport) you’d think that such a miraculous slope would make Engelberg a popular target for short ski breaks. But its slopes are blissfully quiet, especially in midweek.

Try to time your arrival shortly after a snowstorm, book a room at the chic, refurbished Bellevue Terminus hotel (along with an experienced mountain guide) and leave your piste-loving intermediate friends at home. There are a few groomed and way-marked runs here, but none is anywhere near as special as the Laub.

10. Morzine, France

Fly to Geneva Best for intermediate explorers Access to the Portes du Soleil ski area is the big draw at Morzine. Stretching across the Swiss border, it is — in a cold, snowy winter — a vast intermediate-friendly playground, with plenty of freeriding too (provided if you hire a guide to lead the way). Of course, you won’t do it justice in a single ski weekend or short break, but a group of athletic intermediates will have a blast trying, as they carve their way down its tree-lined blues and reds. They’ll enjoy the buzz in the bustling town centre too, and should book a central hotel, such as the friendly Bel’Alpe, to take full advantage of its bars and restaurants. But they must bear in mind Morzine’s modest altitude when planning when to go — this is not a pre-Christmas or late-March destination unless conditions are exceptional.

Morzine (Sam Ingles)

11. La Clusaz, France

Fly to Geneva Best for variety Just over an hour from Geneva airport, La Clusaz packs a lot of variety into its mid-sized, mid-altitude ski area. That’s because it ranges across five massifs: from the steep, full-throttle slopes of La Balme to the tree-lined cruisers of Manigod. It’s home to a highly rated terrain park too — as well as off-piste terrain that nurtured the eye-popping talent of local hero Candide Thovex. Admittedly, it will take a while to get between the more far-flung sectors, so don’t try to see everything on day one. Find the slopes that suit you — the wide blues under the Crêt du Merle lift, perhaps, or the long, fast reds of La Balme — and stay put. For maximum Savoyard style and quick access to the main hub of lifts, the middle of the village is the place to stay, beneath the stone tower of church. Au Coeur du Village is the luxury option. Nearby, Les Airelles is a comfortable and convenient two-star.

Taking in the view at La Clusaz (C Hudry)

12. Verbier, Switzerland

Fly to Geneva Best for hard-skiing socialites The strength of the Swiss franc has made Verbier a pricey resort for Brits in recent years. But there is a way to make it cheaper: by staying in the valley village of Le Châble. Here, the cute Hotel A Lârze is an hour and 40 minutes from Geneva airport and close to two key lifts. One whisks you up to the middle of Verbier, and connects with a second lift up the mountain. The other Le Châble lift will take you directly to the quiet and underrated Bruson area. What’s more, the cable car up to Verbier runs until after 11pm, which means that socialites can enjoy the resort’s upmarket bars and restaurants without contemplating a bus or taxi ride back to base.

Meanwhile, up high, Verbier’s slopes remain as enticing as ever. Over a weekend, intermediates will find enough skiing to keep them smiling — provided they focus on the Savoleyres and Bruson sectors of the piste map. But the real appeal lies in skiing ungroomed snow. When conditions are right, there are slopes here to suit every level of off-pister: from the plucky first-timer to proper experts. So be sure to spend some of the money you’ve saved on accommodation on a qualified ski instructor or mountain guide.

Verbier (Anders Ödman)

13. Kühtai, Austria

Fly to Innsbruck Best for freestylers The little resort of Kühtai is a canny spot for a terrain park — just 40 minutes’ drive from Innsbruck and high enough to withstand all but the steamiest spring thaw. What’s more, it’s shaped by the same company that built the Winter Olympic park at Pyeongchang in 2018. So you can expect reliable kickers, rails and boxes, as well as some stellar local talent to inspire your own tricks and jumps. But it’s not just freestylers who’ll enjoy it.

Kühtai’s ski area may not be big enough for a week-long trip, but it’s blast for a couple of days. Hotels such as the sleek, modern Vaya Kühtai (which has its own indoor pool) offer instant access to the snow, while long, steady intermediate pistes beckon on both sides of its mountain pass. More expert skiers will also be tempted by the resort’s thriving ski-touring scene. Book a guide to show you the way and suddenly the ski area becomes a launchpad for much wider-ranging adventures.

On the slopes in Kühtai (Kuhtai_Tirol Werbung)

14. Alagna, Italy

Fly to Milan Best for heli-skiers One of the joys of European ski holidays is the speed at which they whisk you to a different world: and none one will take you further, faster than a heli-skiing trip. Of course, you need good snow and helpful weather to get airborne: and you must steel yourself for the possibility that you won’t. You need to be able to ski fluently off-piste as well. But it’s worth the risk and the effort. On a calm sunny day, with fresh snow on the ground, it’s like starring in your own personal James Bond film.

Alagna is the place to try it. In the high Alps, two hours northwest of Milan Malpensa airport, this long, low-key village is the launchpad for flights onto both the mighty Monte Rosa massif, and the (generally) easier terrain of the Valsesia next door. So book your place on a guided descent, reserve a room at the stylish MH Olen Boutique Hotel next to the lifts, and don’t be too downhearted if Mother Nature doesn’t oblige. Alagna’s lifts can whisk you to several thrilling off-piste descents without help from a helicopter (although you will need a mountain guide).

• What is heli-skiing and where can I do it?

Heli-skiers on Monte Rosa (Alamy)

15. Andermatt, Switzerland

Fly to Zurich Best for contrasts There’s nowhere quite like Andermatt. Set in a high, cold valley, 90 minutes’ drive from Zurich aiport, it catches almost every snowstorm going in the northern Alps, and used to be a byword for “remote”. But ever since the Swiss army scaled back its presence here, the little village has been on the make. So now, as well as a chocolate-box street of teetering timber houses, it’s home to a growing hamlet of new-build apartments and the kind of dark, gleaming five-star hotel you’d expect to find in the Middle East.

The Chedi Andermatth hotel is unusually spacious and lots of fun. So too is the weird mix of skiing, which ranges from plunging pistes and powder runs on the mighty Gemsstock to the smooth, easy-going pistes towards neighbouring Sedrun. New lifts have significantly improved access to the latter. But you have to try the slower mountain railway at least once: it gives you a taste of skiing straight out of the 1930s.

5 Killer-Value Weekend Ski Trips

Sure, it's early season, but book these mid- and late-winter vacations now and you'll save big

There’s one main reason to wait until the last minute to book ski trips: You can keep an eye on the weather forecast for a better chance of scoring a powder day. This strategy has its drawbacks, though: If you wait, you’ll pay top dollar on everything from hotels to lift tickets. For the best savings, most ski resorts and ski-town hotels incentivize you to book now, in the early winter months. Here are five dependably promising spots.

Powder Mountain

Powder Mountain is a secret giant. It’s bigger than Whistler Blackcomb, with 8,464 acres of skiable terrain, and has two newly added lifts, plus a massive zone for guided and inbounds cat skiing. More than 500 inches of snowfall a year and significantly smaller crowds than elsewhere in Utah (ticket sales are capped at 1,500 per day) mean you’ll be sure to get fresh tracks here. Fly into Salt Lake City and drive 80 minutes, or fly into the tiny Ogden-Hinkley Airport, 25 miles from Powder Mountain, on Allegiant Air’s new direct flights from Los Angeles and Las Vegas, with midweek flights starting as low as $35 each way. Book a house or condo in nearby Eden or a slopeside room at the Columbine Inn , starting at $125.

Now that Vail Resorts owns Stowe , you can use your Epic Pass to ski here starting this winter. The Spruce Peak base area has undergone a transformation, featuring a new $90 million adventure center with a climbing wall and an upscale 300-room hotel and performing arts center. With an average of 314 inches of snow a year, plus extensive snowmaking, you can’t go wrong here in January or February. No Epic Pass? Buy your lift tickets at least 48 hours ahead of your trip for the cheapest rates. You can ride Amtrak from Washington, D.C., or New York City into nearby Waterbury. Or book a seat aboard Tradewind Air ’s eight-passenger planes for an hourlong flight from White Plains, New York, to a small airport 20 minutes from Stowe. (Tickets start at about $232.) Stay at Field Guide Stowe , where a breakfast basket is delivered to your room each morning. Rooms start at $139.

Mammoth Mountain

Nestled into the steep peaks of California’s snow-drenched eastern Sierra Nevada, Mammoth feels remote. But getting here for a weekend jaunt really isn’t that hard. It’s a five-hour drive from Los Angeles, 3.5 hours from Reno, or less than an hour when you hop a direct flight from San Francisco, L.A., or San Diego. Need to stay connected to the office? New this year is a co-working space called the Fort in the mountain’s base lodge, so you can squeeze in a conference call midday if duty calls. You’ll save 40 percent on lift tickets if you buy more than a week in advance, or a book a ski-and-stay package for tickets and lodging at resort-owned properties like the Mammoth Mountain Inn or Tamarack Lodge. Rooms start at $161 per person per night.

You may not think of Boise as a destination ski town, but that’s actually a good thing: Nobody else does, either, which means you’ll have the freshies all to yourself at Bogus Basin , 40 minutes from downtown. Last winter, the mountain had nearly 300 inches—one of the snowiest winters on record. You can fly directly into Boise, a low-key airport with direct flights from many major cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis, and San Francisco. Stay at the Inn at 500 Capitol , a new boutique hotel that opened last January in the increasingly hip downtown Boise. It offers a ski-and-stay package that includes rooms with fireplaces, lift tickets, and après-ski cocktails delivered to your room, starting at $350 a night.

If you can handle the four-hour drive on I-70 from Denver to Aspen , you’ll be treated to vast, empty bowls at four distinctly different mountains. Hop on one of dozens of nonstop (albeit often expensive) flights from major cities to Aspen’s tiny airport, and you’ll be lapping the gondola at Aspen Mountain or bootpacking Highland Bowl that afternoon. The Mountain Collective Pass works here, or buy tickets at least a week in advance for the lowest rates. Book a slopeside room at the base of Snowmass’ Stonebridge Inn and you can get breakfast at the in-house restaurant, the Artisan, before walking to the lifts. Rooms start at $126.

Ski Weekend Destinations

Far removed from a purpose-built resort, Chamonix is made up of several small villages, including Argentiere, which gives the area a unique charm. Transfer time: 1hr 15mins Piste length: 155km

What Our Short Ski Breaks Offer

  • Short transfer times - To maximise your time on the slope, we try to choose resorts that are 2 hours or less from the airport.
  • Extensive choice of flights -  From regional airports in the UK to the most convenient airport hubs for skiers in Europe, e.g. Geneva - just 1 hour 30 minutes flight from London.
  • Shared transfers - The cost of a short ski break is often the most off-putting part to an otherwise great holiday idea. By offering shared transfers at our selected resorts, we can provide better value to you.
  • An array of choice - We have a whole host of accommodation to suit your desires, whether you’re looking for a classic self-catering apartment or luxury 5-star hotel.
  • Ski extras - With all Ski Weekends, we’re able to pre-book your lift pass and ski hire – saving you time and money.

FAQs about ski weekends and short breaks

  • Find a resort with a short transfer time - less time travelling, can mean more time on the slopes and time to get gear and lift passes once you arrive.
  • Get early flights out and late flights back - While an early start can be a struggle for night owls, getting an early flight ensures you're spending more time in resort. And naturally, you can further maximise your time in resort by opting for a late flight back, giving you even more time to ski before you have to leave.
  • Get accommodation close to the slopes/center of the resort - If you choose accommodation close to the slopes, you'll naturally spend less time getting to first lifts in the morning. Ski-in and ski-out options are often ideal for this reason. Meanwhile, if the resort is out of town and requires a bus to get to it, being close to the bus routes in the center of town means less time travelling to the lifts.

Ski Weekends & Short Breaks

Ski weekends and short midweek breaks in Europe with SNO

Short ski breaks

Our flexible ski weekends and midweek short breaks tend to range from 3-5 nights, letting you decide a duration that suits your plans. They’re just the ticket if you can’t take a full week off, but don’t want to completely miss out on the mountains.

By planning early arrival and late departure times and picking a resort with short transfers from the airport or rail station, savvy skiers can squeeze in an extra half day - or even full day - on the slopes. Choose between our short break packages with flights, train or coach travel included to find the best journey for you, or give us a buzz on the number above and we’ll do the searching.

Transfer times vary hugely in the Alps, some taking just over an hour’s drive and others more like three. Picking somewhere with transfers on the shorter end of the scale makes the most of your precious time off by giving you more time on the mountains and less on the road. The resorts in the Portes du Soleil , Grand Massif and Chamonix Valley ski areas are excellent in this department. If you’re travelling a little further (e.g. to the Paradiski area or Espace Killy ), opt for accommodation with doorstep skiing and make up your time by being able to ski straight out each morning.

Midweek ski holidays

If you’re balancing a budget as well as time, midweek ski breaks often work out cheaper than ski holidays that run over weekends. Flights cost less outside peak times, and as a bonus, the pistes are a lot quieter during the week too. Different mid-week packages depart on different days, with most setting off on Sunday or Monday.

Chalet ski weekends

Who said Britain’s favourite ski accommodation was only for week-long stays? Plenty of chalets work with short bookings, and when breakfasts, afternoon teas and suppers with wine come in the overall price, you can focus on skiing and lunchtimes on the mountain. Pair this with a position near the slopes and ski lifts, and you’ve got a fabulously hassle-free few days.

Hotel ski weekends

Ranging from 5* lodgings for luxurious mini-breaks to more basic bases, our hotels with short break availability come in every shape and size.

Half board hotels throw in breakfasts and suppers with lodging, giving you more time to spend skiing and less planning where and when you’re eating. To make things even easier, go for an all-inclusive ski weekend which covers all the food and drink you’ll need, and often extras like lift passes and lessons too.

Or if you want to see as much of the resort as possible during your time away, look for a deal with B&B or room-only.

Ski weekend tips & advice

• If you can get away with it, bring just carry-on luggage and save time waiting at the baggage carousel when you could be sipping a hot chocolate on the mountainside instead.

• Book as many of the ‘extras’ as you can in advance: airport parking, lift passes, equipment hire, ski lessons… So it’s all ready and waiting when you reach resort.

• Check the transfer time to the resort you’ve chosen – does it warrant a long journey, or is it worth picking a closer resort to maximise slope time?

• Opt for a midweek break to keep costs down.

Luxury Ski Weekends

When you’ve only a few days to spare, a more superior lodging could be exactly what the doctor ordered. There’s oodles to choose between, from the plushest chalets in the Alps to 4 and 5* hotels with swimming pools, spas and celebrated restaurants. Ensure you spend as much time on the mountain (or in the hot tub) as possible by booking private flights or helicopter transfers.

Short breaks for large groups & corporate trips

Even for short breaks, organising a bunch of friends or coachload of colleagues can take a lot of effort. We’ll do the legwork for you – just give us your group size and specs and we’ll come up with the best options to browse, whether it’s a big hotel, sole occupancy chalet or a bundle of nearby apartments. When it comes to getting there, bespoke coach trips can be planned around your needs, we can put together packages flying from different airports or source a private jet to transport everyone in ultimate comfort.

Ski weekends by coach

Join a coach trip or book a bespoke coach just for you and your party. Most set off in the evening and arrive in resort the next morning, stopping off at service stations along the way. With spacious seating, TV screens and toilets, the best coaches are kitted out to make your trip as comfy as possible. If you’re the kind of person who can sleep anywhere, you can sleep through the journey and wake up for a full day’s skiing in resort. The bonus of overnight coach journeys is that they give you a whole extra day on the slopes while most other visitors are still travelling.

Ski weekends by plane

Having departures from regional airports all over the UK means you can set off close to home, saving travel time at this end. Fly into the airport nearest your chosen resort, and most packages will include a transfer service to meet you in arrivals and whisk you to the mountains. If you can fit all you need in hand luggage, it’ll help make the journey even smoother – seeing you on your way to the mountains while the rest of the plane are still waiting for their baggage.

Short break FAQ:

Where can i go for a short ski break.

For the UK skiers, you’ll mostly be looking at France, Austria, Switzerland and Spain (the Pyrenees) for a short ski break or ski weekend. Our short break packages tend to focus on resorts that offer convenience. Ski destinations like Flaine , Morzine and Avoriaz are typically good choices because they have short transfer times that let you maximize your time in resorts.

Can you go skiing for a weekend?

Yes! Generally, you’ll find it’s not just Saturday and Sunday though. Most places run durations like Thursday-Monday which give you three solid ski days once you’ve factored in travel times.

What are the best ski resorts for a ski weekend?

Try these ski resorts for a ski weekend:

  • Flaine : Geneva is only 75mins (approx.) away, and the Grand Massif ski area has plenty of terrain for a few days break.
  • Morzine : Another easy trip from Geneva, just 90mins (approx.) and you can be in the Portes Du Soleil ski area.
  • Chamonix : 1hr 20min from Geneva and the perfect place for combining a town break with some fantastic skiing and mountain views.
  • St Anton : A world-famous resort and only a 75min (approx.) drive from Innsbruck. Lots of hotel-style accommodation and you can even take the train (it is a bit longer than driving though).
  • Sierra Nevada : Yes, you can go to Spain for a weekend ski trip! Granada is only 90mins from Sierra Nevada.

Which ski resort has the shortest transfer time?

Here are some of the shortest transfers (based on average traffic and weather conditions):

This Ski Resort Town Was Just Named the Most Expensive Vacation Destination in the U.S.

You may want to start saving up for that vacation right now.

long weekend ski trips

janelca/Getty Images

The average cost of a one-week vacation in the U.S. for just one person hit nearly $2,000 in 2023, up by more than $400 over the previous year, according to a study by Bankrate . And this is just for a basic trip. But if you're hoping to go to places like New York City , you're going to spend a pretty penny, as it was just named the eighth most expensive destination in America.

The travel experts at OptimosTravel recently analyzed more than 100 vacation spots in the United States, assessing each on the price of a daily meal, public transit, accommodation rates, and attraction fees, all in an effort to uncover the 10 most expensive vacation destinations in the nation. After crunching the numbers, it found that Aspen, Colorado, is the most expensive of all.

"Aspen, Colorado, tops the list as the most expensive vacation spot, with a total daily cost of $761.39 per person, leading to a whopping $5,329.72 for a 7-day trip per person," the team noted in its findings, which it shared with Travel + Leisure.

The research crew noted that gourmet meals can cost upward of $100.5 per day, while "opulent accommodations" cost $494.56 per night. "Aspen's breathtaking scenery comes with a premium price tag," it added, "and for a family of four, the skies are the limit at $13,691. Even with modest transportation costs at $7, the city's unmatched offerings ensure its status as the epitome of luxury travel."

Joining Aspen at the top of the most expensive list is Park City, Utah, in second, where travelers can expect to pay $93.75 for daily meals and $471 per night for lodging. "A week's stay costs $4,971 for one and $12,632 for a family of four," the team shared.

Maui, Hawaii, wasn't far behind in third, with a daily cost of $682. "It boasts the highest meals ($112.50) and lodging ($534.11) among top destinations, but affordable attractions ($26.63) balance the cost. A week costs $4,762 solo or $10,782 for families."

These spots were followed by Montauk, New York, in fourth, with a daily cost of $613.77; Santa Monica, California, in fifth with a daily cost of $592.05; Key West, Florida in sixth, with a daily cost of $537; Charleston in seventh with a daily cost of $535.68; and New York City in eighth with a daily cost of $511.34.

Rounding out the top 10 is Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in ninth with a daily cost of $496.65, and one more ski town, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in 10th, with a daily cost of $490 per day. And while, yes, this all sounds expensive, you can't really put a price tag on making new memories. Right? See the full findings at optimostravel.com .

Sarah - Director "It is well worth catching the bus to Prodains in the morning for quicker access to Avoriaz ski area. Whilst there it's worth stopping at the little restaurant just below where Crot and Coupe du Monde cross. It is very cosy and does lovely food."

Travel sustainably - leaf icon

Morzine is a large, lively, year-round resort popular with the British crowd located in the centre of the Portes du Soleil. It is a traditional town which sprawls along both sides of a river gorge and is surrounded by traditional wooden chalets with slate roofs and stone foundations ensuring the village retains its character and traditional Savoyard charm.

Although accommodation can be scattered, there is an excellent multi-route bus service which links all parts of Morzine to the main lifts as well as neighbouring Les Gets . The village itself is full of life and offers a range of sporting and cultural activities alongside the traditional skiing. For those who are not intent on skiing every day, there are plenty of Alpine shops selling local produce such as Genepi and Tomme de Savoie cheese along with local knick-knacks.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants and bars for you to enjoy the après ski during the winter. If you're keen to sample the local nightlife there are several excellent bars and restaurants. The most well-known apres ski bar is Bar Robinson's. Robbo's is a traditional French cafe run by three locals who remember Morzine before it was popular. Although the bar has no music or entertainment it offers super strength Mutzig lager that has made it a popular destination for anyone who's spent the day on the hill. For a little more sophistication there is the Coup de Cour wine bar and for late night parties the Crepu, Cavern, Tibetan Bar and Opera are all grouped together just below the Pleney Cable car.  Morzine is only a short transfer from Geneva, meaning if you are a keen skier you can often manage an extra ½ day on the slopes.

SKI AREA OVERVIEW

Morzine has an extensive local area of slopes which it shares with its smaller neighbour Les Gets. The local lift pass gives you access to the Morzine and Les Gets ski area and is accessed by the new and improved Pleney gondola. It’s well worth heading over to the Point Du Nyon for views of Mont Blanc and if you keep going to Les Gets you will find the hidden gem that is Mont Chery.

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous it is worth upgrading your lift pass to include the whole of the Portes du Soleil. You can then take the Super Morzine gondola to (and back from as there is no piste alternative) Avoriaz and onto Switzerland taking in resorts such as Les Crosets and Champoussinand. This is a fantastic ski area, and well worth considering for those who like to cover large ski areas.

  • We have 4 lovely chalets in Morzine to choose from, all have saunas and two share a large outdoor jacuzzi.
