Live reviews

Although the majority of Marlene Shaw’s success was through her work back in the 60s, she is still producing and performing today at 72 years old. I am a huge fan of hers, and love the way that her music has transferred into popular culture through samples in other artists work, and I was incredibly excited to see her perform live after all of this time.

She opened the show with her track California Soul, and had everyone in the audience singing along right away. She was wonderful at encouraging everyone to join in, and even stopped singing herself, and turned her microphone out to the audience to encourage us further. It was a really great touch, because she knew that everyone knew the words, so the entire auditorium were dancing around! She played a great selection of new and old tracks and even some that I didn’t know, which was incredible hearing beautiful songs for the first time live.

The show was nearly 2 hours long and she maintained incredible energy throughout the performance, and was incredibly talented and her voice didn’t appear to get tired from start to finish. She’s really a wonderful performer too.

Marlena Shaw, Venerable Nightclub Chanteuse, Dies at 84

She sang jazz (with Count Basie, among others) and later funk and disco, frequently in intimate venues, where she regaled audiences with tales of old love affairs.

A black-and-white portrait of Marlena Shaw, looking glamorous, with her short dark hair upswept, as she looks toward the side.

By Alex Traub

Marlena Shaw, who cultivated a sultry stage presence and husky voice from the final echoes of the big-band era to the go-go Playboy Clubs of the 1960s, to the rise of funk, to disco, and finally to the modern cabaret circuit, died on Jan. 19. She was 84.

Her daughter MarLa Bradshaw announced her death on social media but did not provide any further details.

Ms. Shaw first came to public notice in the mid-1960s, when she performed at Playboy Clubs around the country. Describing one of those performances in 1966, The Los Angeles Times labeled her a “pretty girl singer” but also called her “the surprise of the bill.” That same year, Jet magazine reported that “three record companies were waving contracts in her face” after a New York engagement.

She signed with Cadet Records, which in 1967 released her recording of “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” a vocal version of the Joe Zawinul tune that had been a hit for Cannonball Adderley . It reached No. 58 on the Billboard pop chart and 33 on the R&B chart.

It also got the attention of Count Basie , who invited Ms. Shaw to try out for a job singing with his band.

She traveled to Las Vegas for an audition. “I have to admit,” she recalled to The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1975, “that when I was first asked to sing with the Count I thought he was dead.”

Halfway through one of her songs, Basie walked out. Ms. Shaw was not surprised: She didn’t think she had a chance at the job.

Then he reappeared, holding two glasses of Courvoisier. He handed one to Ms. Shaw.

“Don’t push the voice,” he told her, she recalled to The Inquirer. “Save the pipes; you’ll need them tonight.”

She sang with his band for several years.

“From Basie I learned that you can put on a good show without having to have a frantic pace going,” Ms. Shaw told The San Francisco Examiner in 1977.

She also toured and performed with Sammy Davis Jr. , but by the early 1970s she was mainly embarked on a solo career.

She began developing a half-mischievous, half-melancholic style.

The jazz label Blue Note released her album “Who Is This Bitch, Anyway?” in 1975. Its lead track, “You Me and Ethel/Street Walkin’ Woman,” featured a skit in which Ms. Shaw played a commanding and clever but down-and-out prostitute — she works, she says slyly, in “social services” — who gently shakes off a would-be john offering only $25. The album’s liner notes said that, for her, its songs narrated “some of the scenes I’ve lived through.”

She transformed yet again in 1979 with an up-tempo disco album, “Take a Bite.” Although she continued to release albums until 2004, she never made it big as a recording artist. Journalists often noted that she had not garnered the acclaim or celebrity that was once expected of her.

“Marlena Shaw is one of those evergreen performers, a trusty force in jazz even when she isn’t at the top of the charts,” the jazz critic Josef Woodard concluded in The Los Angeles Times in 2001.

Live performance became the focus of her career. As late as 2003, she worked 175 dates a year. She was inspired to sing gospel after trying out the style on a jazz-themed cruise. She studied how to relate to audiences, regaling them with ribald stories. When she sang “You’ve Changed,” a ballad made famous by Billie Holiday, she reminisced about a cross-dressing boyfriend.

Not everyone enjoyed the shtick. In 1978, the New York Times music critic John Rockwell praised Ms. Shaw’s ability to make even “the plainest of songs” into “jazz extravaganzas,” but he deplored her use of “the elegantly vulgar sexual miming that is so popular on the supper‐club circuit.”

Another Times critic, Stephen Holden, took the opposite view. “Her outstanding skill is an ability to interpolate amusing, semi-improvised commentary within songs, in a variety of musical styles, that turns them into personal testimony,” he wrote in 1987.

In 2005, when Ms. Shaw was performing at the Manhattan cabaret Le Jazz Au Bar, Mr. Holden found that her act had retained the kind of appeal it had nearly 20 years earlier.

“She evokes the battle of the sexes, which she suggests is continuing and ultimately hopeless,” Mr. Holden wrote . “Her weapon of choice is a voice with the cutting edge of a meat cleaver.”

Marlina Burgess was born on Sept. 22, 1939, in New Rochelle, N.Y. She grew up singing in a church choir, and during her girlhood she performed at the Apollo Theater. She hoped to go on tour with her uncle, a trumpeter named Jimmy Burgess, but her mother forbade it. She later adopted Marlena Shaw as a stage name.

One night, when Ms. Shaw was in her 20s, she was at a bowling alley when a girlfriend of hers insisted that she ask the bandleader who was performing there if she could sing. With the courage endowed by two beers, Ms. Shaw put herself forward. She got a job singing at the joint for $15 a night.

As of the mid-1970s, she had five children and was married to Ed Boyer, a bassist, but family life did not stop her from touring. “We talk about problems on the phone when I’m on the road,” she said about her relationship with her children in a 1977 interview with The Oakland Tribune. “They’re very cool about my traveling.”

Ms. Shaw lived in Las Vegas for decades. Complete information about survivors was not available.

In recent decades, some of Ms. Shaw’s records provided soundtracks to TV commercials and material for sampling, including “California Soul” (which was used by KFC and Dockers ) and “Woman of the Ghetto” (which was sampled by Fat Joe and Beenie Man , among others).

Before her death, her birth year had generally been listed as 1942 or 1944, but her daughter wrote in the death announcement that she had actually been born in 1939. On that subject, Ms. Shaw once told The Oakland Tribune that she had learned a lesson from Sammy Davis Jr.: “He taught me to use everything I have onstage; I don’t hold anything back, except my age.”

Marlena Shaw, Oft-Sampled ‘California Soul’ Singer, Dead at 81

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Marlena Shaw , the oft-sampled soul singer best known for her enduring 1969 hit “California Soul,” has died at the age of 81.

Shaw’s daughter Marla Bradshaw confirmed her mother’s death Friday on social media; no cause of death was provided.

“It’s with a very heavy heart for myself and my family I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist Marlena Shaw has passed away today,” Bradshaw said. “She was peaceful. We were at peace… She went listening to some of her favorite songs.”

Shaw’s onetime label Verve Records added in a statement , “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St. helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”

Shaw’s catalog would later become a treasure trove for turntablists and hip-hop producers, with her music sampled on songs by the likes of Gang Starr, the Avalanches, Drake, Schoolboy Q, Ultramagnetic MCs, DJ Shadow, The Game, Jay Electronica and Ghostface Killah, with the latter’s “Ghetto” prominently making use of Shaw’s “Woman of the Ghetto.”

Marlena Shaw, exuberant singer known for ‘California Soul,’ dies at 84

‘when i sing, i want people to feel something,’ she said. ‘i don’t care if it’s jazz or pop.’.

marlena shaw tour

Marlena Shaw, an exuberant, genre-busting singer who performed with jazz bandleader Count Basie, recorded an enduring version of the 1960s anthem “California Soul” and channeled the marches and demonstrations of a turbulent era in songs like “Woman of the Ghetto,” died Jan. 19. She was 84, her family said, although she was long reported to have been three years younger.

Her death was announced in a Facebook post by one of her daughters, MarLa Bradshaw, who did not share further details.

Equipped with a powerful alto and a cheeky, playful demeanor that came out in extended stories that she told onstage, Ms. Shaw started performing at age 10, singing and playing the piano with an uncle during amateur night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. She was still performing well into her 70s, venturing into soul, funk, gospel, R&B and disco while remaining rooted in the jazz tradition that she had first fallen for as a child.

“She suggests Dinah Washington with a double shot of bebop or a roughed-up Betty Carter,” New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote in 2005 , when Ms. Shaw was wrapping up a concert residency at Le Jazz au Bar in Manhattan.

“Attacking phrases in a sharp, biting voice with no soft edges, she bends notes and subjects tunes to spiky rhythmic scrutiny,” he continued, adding that in her rendition of songs like the jazz ballad “Cry Me a River,” Ms. Shaw “evokes the battle of the sexes, which she suggests is continuing and ultimately hopeless. Her weapon of choice is a voice with the cutting edge of a meat cleaver.”

Ms. Shaw had an eclectic repertoire. She interpreted traditional blues songs (“Stormy Monday”), Broadway show tunes (“Matchmaker, Matchmaker”), soft-rock hits (“Just the Way You Are”), gospel anthems (“I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free”) and modern-day standards (“Here’s to Life”). During her disco-diva era in the late 1970s, she had success with a silky cover of Diana Ross’s “Touch Me in the Morning” ; a decade later, she and Joe Williams earned a Grammy nomination for their duet on the mischievous love song “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby.”

One of Ms. Shaw’s biggest hits, a buoyant 1969 recording of the funk-soul song “California Soul,” was largely overlooked when it was released on her second album, “The Spice of Life.” Written by the husband-and-wife duo of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the song was recorded in 1967 by the Messengers and covered by groups including the 5th Dimension and the Motown singers Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

But it was Ms. Shaw’s version — opening with an orchestral blast of strings and horns, followed by a syncopated drum break — that became a favorite at the turn of the century, when it was sampled by hip-hop artists including Gang Starr (for their 1990 song “Check the Technique” ), remixed by the DJ and record producer Diplo and used in commercials for Dockers pants, Dodge Ram pickup trucks and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

“Like a sound you hear that lingers in your ear / But you can’t forget, from sundown to sunset, now, now,” Ms. Shaw sang. “It’s all in the air, you hear it everywhere / No matter what you do it’s gonna grab a hold on you / California soul.”

While tapping into a sun-dappled image of West Coast cool, the song offered a stark contrast to some of Ms. Shaw’s more overtly political material. Her funky protest song “Woman of the Ghetto,” which she co-wrote and used to open “The Spice of Life,” was structured as an appeal to an apathetic power structure that seemed to have little interest in listening to Black women like her: “I’m a woman of the ghetto / Listen to me, legislator / How do you raise your kids in a ghetto? / How do you raise your kids in a ghetto? / Feed one child and starve another.”

Like “California Soul,” the song found new life through hip-hop and electronic music, sampled by Ghostface Killah, the British DJ Blue Boy and the French musician St. Germain. Elements of another Shaw song, a cover of Roberta Flack’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” made their way onto tracks by Schoolboy Q and Drake.

“Sampling of my music has caused an interest in the original again,” she told a New Zealand interviewer in 2005, when she was preparing to tour the country. It didn’t hurt, she added, that sampling had also reminded her children that her fan base extended far beyond her contemporaries and the baby boomers that followed her.

“I’d love to take a picture of the audience,” she joked, “and take it home to my kids and say, ‘See these people are listening to me — what’s wrong with you?’”

Ms. Shaw was born Sept. 22, 1939, according to her daughter’s Facebook post, and grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y. By most accounts, she was born Marlina Burgess.

As a young girl, she played piano at a Baptist church, sang with gospel choirs and discovered jazz through her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a trumpeter who introduced her to records by Dizzy Gillespie and vocalist Al Hibbler.

Ms. Shaw studied music at New York State Teachers College at Potsdam (now the State University of New York at Potsdam) before dropping out and getting married. She had five children, although information on survivors was not immediately available.

While performing at the Playboy Club in New York in 1966, Ms. Shaw met the accountant of Count Basie, the renowned bandleader and pianist. She soon began a four-year gig with the musician, singing with his band at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Decades later, she still recalled Basie’s advice on setting the tempo for a song: “Well, Darlin’, now just remember: Don’t put it above a heartbeat.”

Around that same time, she signed with Cadet Records, a subsidiary of Chicago’s Chess Records, and released soul singles that included “Let’s Wade in the Water” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” a moderate hit that added lyrics to the jazz song made famous by Cannonball Adderley.

Ms. Shaw went on to release five albums with the venerable jazz label Blue Note Records, including the bluntly titled 1975 record “Who Is This Bitch, Anyway?” (She was often described as the label’s first female vocalist, although another singer, Dodo Greene, released an album with Blue Note in 1962.) She also broadened her popularity by touring with Sammy Davis Jr. and experimenting with a more pop-oriented sound, including on “Don’t Ask to Stay Until Tomorrow,” the theme for the 1977 Diane Keaton movie “Looking for Mr. Goodbar.”

That same year, she released the album “Sweet Beginnings,” which added synthesizers to her music while retaining her trademark humor. On the satirical story song “Yu-Ma/Go Away Little Boy,” a riff on the 1960s pop hit “Go Away Little Girl,” she spoke of making herself into “the perfect woman” for her “perfect man” — “I got myself a three-year subscription to Essence magazine, read it from cover to cover” — only to drop her boyfriend after he declares that he’s going to “take out a small-business man’s loan and open up a head shop.”

Within a few weeks, the album had sold a reported 136,000 copies, equaling her entire earlier outpoint, according to Ms. Shaw.

“When a record does well,” she told the Times , “it builds your confidence and proves your ideas valid. Before, I didn’t have that much confidence or direction in my career. For some people, it’s wonderful to be a jazz purist. But I never considered myself a specialist. When I sing, I want people to feel something. I don’t care if it’s jazz or pop. I guess I’m still an enigma to myself.”

Marlena Shaw

Marlena Shaw (born Marlina Burgess, September 22, 1942 – January 19, 2024) was an American jazz, blues, and soul singer. Shaw began her singing career in the 1960s and continued to perform until her death. Her music has often been sampled in hip-hop music, and used in television commercials. Shaw died on January 19, 2024, at the age of 81.

Marlena Shaw was born in New Rochelle, New York. She was first introduced to music by her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a jazz trumpet player. In an interview with The New York Times, she told the reporter: "He [Jimmy Burgess] introduced me to good music through records – Dizzy [Gillespie], Miles [Davis], a lot of gospel things, and Al Hibbler, who really knows how to phrase a song." In 1952, Burgess brought her on stage at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem to sing with his band. Shaw's mother did not want Marlena to go on tour with her uncle at such a young age. Shaw enrolled in the New York State Teachers College in Potsdam (now known as the State University of New York at Potsdam) to study music but she later dropped out.

Shaw began to make singing appearances in jazz clubs whenever she could spare the time. The most notable of these appearances was in 1963 when she worked with jazz trumpeter Howard McGhee. She was supposed to play at the Newport Jazz Festival with McGhee and his band but left the group after getting into an argument with one of the band members. Later that year, she got an audition with Columbia label talent scout John Hammond. Shaw did not perform well during the audition because she was too nervous. Undeterred, she continued to play small clubs until 1966. Her career took off in 1966 when she landed a gig with the Playboy Club chain in Chicago. It was through this gig that she met with representatives of the Chess Records music label and soon signed with them. She released her first two albums on their subsidiary Cadet Records. A 1969 album track "California Soul", a funk-soul tune written by Ashford & Simpson and originally issued as a single by American pop quintet The 5th Dimension, later became a staple of the UK rare groove scene. This song has appeared in television commercials for Dockers, KFC, and Dodge Ram trucks. Unable to find her own style at Chess, she moved to the jazz-oriented Blue Note Records in 1972.

In 1977 she released an LP Sweet Beginnings on Columbia that contained: "Yu Ma / Go Away Little Boy", a medley containing the old Goffin and Carole King standard, originally recorded by Nancy Wilson. The album also contained the track Look at Me, Look at You, popular in the U.K. rare groove scene. She sings the theme song "Don't Ask to Stay Until Tomorrow" from the 1977 film Looking for Mr. Goodbar which is also found on its soundtrack. She also recorded one of the disco era's biggest hits, a remake of "Touch Me in the Morning", also on Columbia Records.

In 1982 Marlena recorded the Gary Taylor ballad called "Without You in My Life" from the LP Let Me in Your Life that was jointly produced by Johnny Bristol and Webster Lewis on South Bay Records. This had moderate chart success in the USA. In 1983 she recorded the vocals for "Could It Be You", a track by Phil Upchurch on his Name of the Game album.

Shaw continued to perform and record. In 1999, 2001, and again in 2007, Shaw was one of the performers at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.

Shaw began her music career in the 1960s and went on to influence several musical genres, including jazz, soul, disco and R&B. California Soul

Shaw initially rose to popularity when Chess Records noticed her in the ’60s. It was under the music label’s subsidiary Cadet Records that she released the albums Out of Different Bags (1967) and The Spice of Life (1969), the latter of which included the hit tracks “California Soul” and “Woman of the Ghetto.”

“California Soul,” written by Ashford & Simpson, has since been sampled by several other artists , including Gang Starr, Stereo MC’s, DJ Shadow and Diplo. Prior to Shaw’s reading of the song, “California Soul” was first recorded by The Fifth Dimension, and also became part of many television ads too. It currently has more than 100 million streams on Spotify.

Shaw later released a series of acclaimed titles for Blue Note Records, which she moved to in 1972. These include Marlena , From the Depths of My Soul and Just a Matter of Time . She later released Sweet Beginnings under Columbia Records in 1977. The latter release contained the track “Look at Me, Look at You,” popular on the U.K. rare groove scene.

She continued to perform live into the 2000s, and recorded the theme song “Don’t Ask to Stay Until Tomorrow” for the 1977 film, Looking for Mr. Goodbar . In 1999, 2001 and again in 2007, Shaw gave acclaimed performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.

Verve Records, who worked with Shaw in 1987, shared an official statement, “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St. helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
