Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.

Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.

When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:

The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?

The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?

The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?

The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?  

Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.

Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.

Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.

Disney Cruise Line

When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.

There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.

Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.

Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.

The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship. 

Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities. 

Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke. 

The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited. 

In-room babysitting isn't available.

Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.

The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.

All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.

The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.

For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.

As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.

Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.

Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.

Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.

For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.

On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.

Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.

Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary. 

Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together. 

Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke. 

For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.

The fleet has 22 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.

Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.

The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.

Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.

For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.

MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.

Celebrity, Holland America and Princess

Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line and Princess offer kids programs, but they’re not as well known for amenities on the ships like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters. The ships often aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships.

These lines can be great for multigenerational cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And they also have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.

The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). The Oasis of the Seas is one or the largest ships in the world. As someone who cruised on the Oasis of the Seas recently, I’ll be the first one to say that this is the ultimate cruise ship for families!

With multiple restaurants, fantastic entertainment and endless activities, the Oasis of the Seas has something for every member of the family. For a ship with over 6,700 passengers, somehow the Oasis never feels overly crowded.

Now if you’re thinking about food that is great for kids and families, there are many free casual food options including Sorrento’s Pizza, El Loco Fresh and the Dog House.

Additionally, the Windjammer Marketplace (buffet) has a wide variety of options. If you prefer a sit down meal, the main dining room has great food and service. You’ll also find plenty of specialty restaurants that have an extra charge.

There are multiple entertainment venues onboard the Oasis of the Seas, including the Aqua Theatre, Studio B (ice skating show) and the Royal Theatre.

A few other fun things to do for families are a parade and a 70’s show, all happening in the Royal Promenade.

On sea days , the pool area is a great place to hang out with the family. There are multiple hot tubs and pools, and there is even poolside ice cream for those who have a sweet tooth.

3. Quantum of the Seas

The Quantum of the Seas is one of the best cruises for families . This is a sister ship to the Anthem of The Seas and the Ovation of The Seas cruise ships.

In comparison to the Oasis class ships, the Quantum of the seas is smaller (although still a big ship at 168,000 tons). Quantum of the Seas holds just under 5,000 passengers.

The Quantum of the Seas has some cool and unique attractions: bumper karts, indoor sky diving and the North Star.

The North Star is a ride that brings you 300 feet above sea level where you’ll have beautiful view of the ocean and cruise ship. This ride accommodates up to 14 passengers and last for around 15-20 minutes. Depending on the time of day and sailing, charges may apply for the North Star.

The Quantum of the Seas has multiple pools and hot tub areas including the main pool, an indoor pool and a beautiful adult only pool area.

While your kids are at Adventure Ocean kid’s club, feel free to enjoy the beautiful adult only solarium. This is a great place to relax in a calm and quiet environment, while your children are having the time of their lives!

One of the great things about Voyager class cruise ships their size. At 137,000 tons, the Voyager of the Seas is a large ship with many onboard attractions and activities.

This ship size is great for families with younger kids that might find Oasis class ships overwhelming in size. While the Oasis of the Seas has many bells and whistles, the Voyager of the Seas has many great activities as well.

The Freedom of the Seas is one of the three Freedom class cruise ships. At about 155,000 tons, this cruise ship is a bit larger than the Voyager class ships, and smaller than the Oasis class.

Since it got refurbished back in 2015, the Freedom of the Seas now has some new attractions and activities . Royal Caribbean added water slides, laser tag, and the Flowrider Surf Simulator to the cruise ship.

One of the biggest advantages of doing a family cruise on Freedom of the Seas is its value, which is amazing for families cruising on a budget .

Since the Freedom of the Seas is not one of the newest Royal Caribbean cruise ships, the price is often lower than other newer cruise ships.

One of the best parts about cruising for families is the kid’s club. The kid’s club, Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean, is a place where children and teens can hang out in a supervised and safe environment.

Children are divided by age group, which allows for each age group to have a unique set of activities. Here’s how the children are divided:

Adventure Ocean Age Groups:

• Royal Babies & Royal Tots (6-36 months)
• Aquanauts (ages 3-5)
• Explorers (ages 6-8)
• Voyagers (ages 9-11)
• Teens (ages 12-14)

Royal Babies & Royal Tots Information (6-36 months)

The Royal Babies and Royal Tots program is offered on select Royal Caribbean ships. This program is for younger children who are not old enough to attend the Adventure Ocean kid’s club.

There is a 1 staff to 3 children ratio, to ensure that each child gets the proper supervision. There are activities for the young kids throughout the day, like play time, watching movies and art sessions, which parents can participate in.

This program costs $6 per hour, per child, between 9 am to 6 pm and $8 per hour, per child, between 6 pm and midnight.

The Royal Babies and Royal Tots program makes cruising with young children a lot easier and it’s one of the many reasons that Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for families.

Aventure Ocean Information Ages 3-11:

Those who take part in the Adventure Ocean kid’s club will have the time of their lives. As a kid, my parents could never get me out of the kids club, because it was so much fun!

The teen club on Royal Caribbean is a great place for young people on a cruise to meet and hang out. In the teen’s club there is a dance floor, video game areas and activities going on throughout the day.

As a teenager who has cruised on Royal Caribbean , I can say that they have one of the best youth programs at sea. The staff are super friendly. Plus, the kid’s club is a cool area to hang out and the activities are super fun.

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). Viking's 180-day World Voyage

For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024-June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service. 

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea. 

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count. 

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent. 

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all." 

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."

Do What Floats Your Boat In Port

And if your best trip involves history or exploration, you'll find that the ports Icon of the Seas  visits on eastern Caribbean sailings are some of the best places for nature hikes and heritage sites, from national parks to trails that lead to waterfalls and even colonial homesteads.

Lazy Days In Saint Martin/Sint Maarten

This island, with its French and Dutch sides, is all about fun in the sun. Spread your towels out on some of best beaches for families in the Caribbean, including Long Bay, Cupecoy Bay and Baie Rouge. Simpson Bay, the largest saltwater lagoon in the Caribbean, is often called the "Great Pond." It's an ideal spot for families with young children.

Or combine a beach day with one of the best family activities in Sint Maarten — plane-spotting. Head to Maho Beach to watch the jets land at nearby Princess Juliana International Airport. Airplanes making their final approach fly less than 100 feet above the beach right overhead. The experience is thrilling.

Perhaps you're more in tune with a bit of peace and quiet. If so, go to Loterie Farm, a private nature reserve deep in the island's interior. It's a tranquil place to spend a few hours, including a dip in the lovely multi-level pool that qualifies as an architectural marvel. Or choose a self-guided hike through the tropical forest and maybe zip line across the property from tree to lovely tree. Keep your ears trained for the sounds of local birds and watch for the monkeys who call the surrounding forest home.

Another worthwhile pursuit is a hike to the top of Mount Concordia at the French and Dutch border. It's one of the best places for panoramic views of the entire island and also a historic location. The Treaty of Concordia was signed here in 1648 by the two island governors who represented the Kingdom of France and the Dutch Republic, officially dividing the island of Saint Martin and Sint Maarten into the two halves that still exist today.

After all that hiking, you might need a bite to eat. If you're lunching ashore, go for grilled lobster, stuffed crab or cod fritters.

Scenic St. Kitts

Some itineraries call on St. Kitts & Nevis, a pair of perfect little islands separated by only two miles of ocean. When you call on the port of Basseterre in St. Kitts, you can look forward to some of the best family activities in the region.

Explore the seventeenth-century seaside Brimstone Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved forts in the Americas.

If you enjoy breaking a sweat, spend a few hours hiking the long and narrow Mount Liamuiga trail through towering trees and tropical flowers. It's a bit further afield, but the crater of this 3,792-foot dormant volcano provides explosive views.

Hop aboard the double-decker railcars of St. Kitts Scenic Railway's "sugar train" — it's a top kid-friendly activity. The scenic two-hour ride travels along the route used a century ago to transport sugarcane across the island.

If a laid-back day of sunbathing and snorkeling is more your thing, the narrow peninsula in the southeast contains the best beaches in St. Kitts, including Frigate Bay with its powdery sand. Or expand your horizons on a 30-minute ferry ride to the sweet little sister island of Nevis.

If you're staying onshore for the day, snack on conch or spiny lobster grilled over an open fire or look for West Indian specialties like pepper pot and Arawak chicken.

Reach The Top Of St. Thomas

An eastern Caribbean family island vacation could hardly be complete without a visit to Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. A classic Caribbean port of call, the city's harbor is dotted with sailboats and lined with colorful houses and shops — and there are beaches aplenty.

Just a few miles from town on the north shore is popular Magens Bay" , home to a horseshoe-shaped beach that has appeared in many "best beaches" lists over the years. To the east are even more appealing stretches of sand, including Coki Beach and Sapphire Beach.

A tiny gem, lush St. John lies just a few miles east of St. Thomas across Pillsbury Sound. More than half of the island comprises Virgin Islands National Park, part of the U.S. National Park Service. To get there, hop on a ferry to Cruz Bay in St. John, and then it's just a 15-minute ride to the gorgeous white-sand beach at Trunk Bay, consistently rated one of the Caribbean's very best. You'll want to try out the marked snorkeling trail, where you can read about the sea life and coral from underwater signs.

For those who dig history, head just off Charlotte Amalie's bustling main street to find pockets of the past. These include the charming, 19th-century brick-and-stone St. Thomas Synagogue and the 18th-century Frederick Lutheran Church, each among the oldest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The nearby Fort Christian, which dates back to the 1670s, was named after Danish King Christian V and rises from the harbor to dominate the town center.

Stop by Blackbeard's Castle, built in 1679 on Government Hill, to see the world's largest collection of life-sized pirate statues. Or climb the legendary 99 Steps built by 18th-century Danes using bricks that once served as a ship ballast.

St. Thomas' central mountain range offers endless opportunities to snag the ultimate panoramic selfie. On scenic Skyline Drive is Drake's Seat lookout, a must-stop spot named after the famous explorer. From here, the views of Magens Bay and the St. Thomas coastline are breathtaking.

Just down the road is the lookout at Mountain Top, which rises over 1,500 feet above sea level — the highest point on St. Thomas — with sweeping views of more than a dozen islands, including St. John and the British Virgin Islands.

Closer to town, take the gondola to Paradise Point, which sits 687 feet up with a hilltop restaurant and bar overlooking the island.

Local culinary favorites in the U.S. Virgin Islands include conch fritters, johnnycakes (cornmeal flatbreads) and chocolate-dipped coconut patties that are impossible to resist.
