Itineraries

The M/C Galapagos Seaman Journey offers a wide range of itineraries for those looking to see the highlights in short time or for those that want to experience a long cruise on the Galapagos Island. There are three main itineraries that combined all together could be a trip of 15 days

Itinerary A | Seaman Journey

The hightlight of this itinerary is Genovesa Island and the possibility of walking to the cliff at El Barranco, observing thousands of sea birds fluttering around. Of course this obvious Red Footed Booby is ever present. Darwin bay offers great encounters with sea birds and top class snorkeling

AM: FLIGHT TO GALAPAGOS

This day you will fly to the Galapagos Island. Due to the Galapagos Government, a fee of 20 USD must be paid for the migration control card.

Once in Santa Cruz, passengers must go through an inspection point at the airport to make sure that no foreign plants or animals are being introduced to the archipelago. Also, this inspection point is where passengers have to pay for the entrance to the Galapagos National Park under the following parameters:

Passengers Foreigners $100 and Children $50 (under 12 years old).

Later on, your guide will pick you, and will carry your luggage to the bus. Passengers will arrive to the Catamaran Seaman Journey on a motorized boat called panga.

PM: NORTH SEYMOUR

North Seymour is an uplifted (as opposed to volcanic) island. Therefore, it is generally flat and strewn with boulders. There are good nesting sites here for a large population of magnificent frigate birds. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the more open areas and swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges.

Despite the tremendous surf that can pound the outer shore, sea lions haul out onto the beach and can be found bodysurfing.

AM: GENOVESA, ISLAND EL BARRANCO – THE CLIFF

The visitor site of El Barranco is located in the southern part of Darwin Bay from Genovesa Island. The trail is on volcanic rock, consists of 1.5 km and can be done in about 2 hours. The youngest area of the island, from a geological point of view, lies on this area.

The cliff is located in the south, are composed of very fragile lava. The natural erosion in these lava flows has become the ideal place for nesting Storm Petrels. You can see two species of petrels that nest in cavities and holes in the lava.

One of its main predators is the short-eared owl. The red-footed booby nests only in the outer islands of the archipelago, Punta Pitt, Gardner (Floreana), Wolf, Darwin and Genovesa. Also, present on this island is the masked booby. During the “panga rides” along the cliffs, fur sea lions and several species of seabirds can be seen.

PM: DARWIN BAY

This bay has its origin when the crater of this island collapsed below sea level. The wet landing is on a beautiful white coral sandy beach. This is a favorite island for birdwatchers that allow the following species to be seen: red footed-booby, masked boobies, wandering tattlers, lava gulls, whimbrels, yellow-crowned, and black-crowned lava herons, and yellow warblers.

Continuing on the trail, visitors climb gradually to the edge of the cliff seeing Red-Foots nesting in the Mangrove trees below. Birdwatching includes sightings of sharp-beaked finches, large cactus and ground finches, Galapagos doves, and swallow-tailed gulls. Reaching the end of the trail, at the cliff’s edge an incredible view of the island and the many birds living there can be observed.

AM: PLAZAS, SANTA CRUZ

Plazas is located at the east of Santa Cruz Island, and forms part of two islands known as Islas Plazas. Despite its small size, some of the most interesting and outstanding species of the Galapagos are found here. The Plazas land iguanas are smaller than its relatives found at other islands.

Throughout the island are several hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana, they are unique, recognizable at first glance by their black/gray color, with a land iguana’s crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The big population of iguanas is due to the presence of tunas, their favorite food. Swallow tailed gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other seabirds as: Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds, and brown pelicans.

PM: SANTA FE

Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, this island was formed from an uplift instead of a volcanic origin, this is why it is mostly flat. There are some theories which assure this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. Santa Fe is the home of a number of endemic species like the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land Iguanas of the islands.

After disembarking in the beautiful and clear waters you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail many salt bushes can be seen as well giant Prickly pear cactus: gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. There are great possibilities of snorkeling with playful sea lions and tropical fish.

AM: SAN CRISTOBAL, Jacinto Gordillo Breeding Center

In 2004 the Breeding and Rearing Center for young tortoises Jacinto Gordillo, named after a famous settler, was located in Cerro Colorado, San Cristobal Island, in order to take care of young tortoises. In 2008 an assisted reproduction program started on the island due to the birth of a little turtle in captivity. All of this will be learnt at the Jacinto Breeding Center.

One can not only learn about breeding processes but as well get engaged and experience why this breeding centre does what it does.

After the morning excursion you will be taken to the airport for your flight to the mainland.

Galapagos Seaman Journey | Itinerary B

Explore the oldest islands of the archipelago, the highlands of these areas boast tropical cloudforests and developed flora. Espanola island is one of the archipelagos gems, it is the only place in the world where the waved albatross nests and features colorful iguanas. The Post office bay is another highlight of this route.

Once in San Cristobal, passengers must go through an inspection point at the airport to make sure that no foreign plants or animals are being introduced to the archipelago. Also, this inspection point is where passengers have to pay for the entrance to the Galapagos National Park under the following parameters:

PM: SAN CRISTOBAL, INTERPRETATION CENTER

This is an interpretation center with exuberant gardens and stunning ocean views. Visitors at the interpretation center can learn a lot from the geological and human history of the islands, conservation facts and natural history. This is the oldest museum of Natural History in the Galapagos Islands which attempts to preserve the archipelago. It is indeed inspiring and motivating to watch and learn all of their research and attempts.

AM: SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND, GALAPAGUERA

A short visit will take place at the Galapaguera, a good place to observe Galapagos tortoises in its natural habitat.

San Cristobal island has endemic species such as: the Mockingbird Nesomimus melanotis, lava lizard (Microlophus bivittatus), Chatham Leaf-toed Gecko (Phyllodactylus leei) and the tortoises. All of these species can be observed in this place, the beach is really big and it works as a nesting zone for marine tortoises. Between January and May, it is common to find the footprints of the female tortoises who have climbed to the sand dunes to deposit their eggs! This truly is a worthy experience to be a part of.

PM: CERRO BRUJO

Cerro Brujo is a beautiful white coral beach where you can swim and watch birds and sea lions, plus you can snorkel. This is the first coast where Charles Darwin walked on, in 1835. In this marvelous lava landscape, you can watch seabirds like blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, herons, frigate birds and shore birds. The protected bay is well known for its young tortoises which like to swim around.

The pools with salty water behind the sand dunes were used by the fishermen as a salt mine in order to preserve food for the local population. Among the fauna you can observe the Chatham Mockingbird and the San Cristobal Lava Lizards, both species are endemic to the island and unique to the area. Furthermore, you will see the Galapagos turtles and with luck, the little bird known as the Pájaro Brujo in Spanish, an endemic species in San Cristobal Island.

The vegetation covers all the route, where you can find species like the candelabrum cactus and carob trees. Located on the north coast of Isla San Cristobal it is a peaceful place with white sand and crystal water, a perfect combination for an incredible stay.

AM: ESPAÑOLA ISLAND, GARDNER BAY

Located on the north-eastern coast of Hood, Gardner Bay offers an excellent beach to relax, swim and even kayak, plus the opportunity to observe sea lions (Zalophus wollebaki), here we can also observe sharks in the crystal clear ocean waters.

At this place you can see three species of Darwin finches:

A subspecies of the large-billed cactus finch (Geospiza fuliginosa), which is similar to the large-billed terrestrial finch;

The small-beaked ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa and;

The singing finch (Certhidea Olivacea) which is another endemic subspecies.

Both resident and migratory birds are observed.

PM: SUAREZ POINT

This area is great for spotting blue-footed boobies, albatrosses and Nazca boobies. A beautiful site on the oceanfront, the large waved albatrosses use the cliff as a launching pad. The famous attraction is the magnificent blowhole, spurting water high into the air at least from 50 to 75 meters high. This site presents wonderful photograph opportunities

AM: CORMORANT POINT, CHAMPION ISLET

This site offers probably the best flamingo lagoon in the

Galapagos; it is also one of the largest in the islands. It’s situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintail ducks, and other migratory birds. It is very interesting to see the two distinct beaches: “The Green Beach” (due to its high  percentage of olivine crystals in the sand) and the “Flour Sand Beach” which is made up of coral.

After the interesting walk, the group is taken to Champion Islet, a great place to enjoy snorkeling and underwater wildlife. Some of the animals that can be seen are sea turtles, sea lions, and multiple fish thanks to the nearby coral reef.

PM: POST OFFICE BAY

Historically, this site is the location of a wooden barrel that was placed in the 18th century by the crew of a whaling ship. It has been used since this time by marines and tourists as a post office. The idea is to carry letters or postcards to their destination by hand. Besides, this site was the landing area for some of the first colonists. This day’s afternoon is thought to be a relaxing time for visitors to enjoy the beach and the beauty of Galapagos.

AM: TURTLES TRAIL

Although the great majority of Galapagos visitors come here to observe and appreciate natural wonders, it is also  interesting to learn how the protection and conservation of the islands are carried out. This path offers the possibility to learn aspects and feel synchronized with nature. After the morning excursion you will be taken to the airport for your flight to the mainland. Transfer to Baltra airport.

Galapagos Seaman Journey | Itinerary C

This program takes you on a journey to the remotest corners of the archipelago. We visit the far west islands, these are the youngest, lave fields are common, scarce vegetation has driven wildlife to adapt the most. Flightless cormorants and penguins share the rocks and waters of Bolivar channel. Fernandina island is the youngest island and perhaps the most unique.

Our guide will pick you up and carry your luggage to the bus that transports the tourists to the ferries to cross the Itabaca Channel. After this, you will be taken by another bus to the first visit to Ranch Manzanillo where visitors must wear comfortable walking shoes, light clothing and a waterproof jacket, sun-block lotion, a camera and repellent for the first activity. The visit to Ranch Manzanillo includes a picnic lunch and a short walk before boarding the Motor Catamaran. It is important to follow these instructions in order to accomplish this itinerary properly. Please be aware that passenger ́s luggage will be sent directly to the Seaman Journey yacht.

Santa Cruz offers excellent opportunities to observe the wild Galapagos Tortoises. Tracking tortoises is not the only exciting activity to be found in the highlands. There are also plenty of lava tubes, sinkholes and craters ready to be explored. After this visit they moved to the M / C Seaman Journey.

AM: FERNANDINA ISLAND, MANGLE POINT

Off the eastern coast of Fernandina, Mangle Point can be found, a superior snorkeling site and a beautiful location for riding in a panga or zodiac through a grove of mangrove trees. A hike of about 1/2 miles is possible. While you are on your ride, you are likely to see sea lions, tortoises, pelicans, rays and birds too numerous to name them all.

P M: PUNTA MORENO

Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island between the volcano Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcano.

The trail runs along a lava flow Pahoehoe (solidified lava in the form of corrugated or an accordion) into a complex of coastal lagoons, where several species of birds which can be found around this lakes and mangroves

AM: ISABELA ISLAND, URBINA BAY

Urbina Bay is located at the base of Alcedo Volcano on the west coast, between Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay. This area experienced a major uplift in 1954, which caused the land to rise over 16 feet. The coast expanded half a mile out, leaving marine life stranded on the new shore. This area is also a great place to snorkel. Urbina Bay is a path that starts off with a wet landing. The course is approximately 3200m, and made up of sand, pumice, lava, coral and vegetation where one can observe iguana burrows. It is an ideal place to see red and blue lobster!

In Bahia Urbina you can see Darwin’s finches. Its main attraction is the land iguanas, which are larger than in places like South Plaza Island and Galapagos tortoises also in the wild, sometimes even out of season they are on the bottom of the islands. A large amount of vegetation can be observed such as chamomile and Rosewood, but among all these plants, the beautiful flowers of cotton Darwin, endemic to the Galapagos Islands stand out.

PM: ISABELA ISLAND, TAGUS COVE

Tagus Cove is located west of Darwin Volcano on Isabela Island. This was a favorite spot for pirates and whalers, and it was them who started the following tradition: the inscription of the names of boats. At the beginning of the trail, you will see a small cave where you will find inscriptions dating to the 1800s.

Its name originated from a British warship that went across the islands in 1814 looking for Galapagos Tortoise for food. Due to former eruptions, the substrate has a large amount of volcanic rocks of different sizes, among the most common are little balls of nearly spherical shape known as the “lapilli” or petrified rain.

AM: FERNANDINA ISLAND, ESPINOZA POINT

Espinoza Point is a famous place known for its large colonies of marine iguanas and as the habitat of unique species like the flightless cormorant, Galapagos penguin, Galapagos hawk, and Galapagos snake.

PM: VICENTE ROCA POINT

One of the most impressive and spectacular places of the enchanted Galapagos Islands; with high cliffs and tuffstone, ash and lava formations give this area a majestic touch, is Punta Vicente Roca. It is located in the north-western coast of the island; it comprises two distinct islets. This large bay has a spectacular marine life.

Here, you can see seahorses, sea turtles and the strange yet fascinating Mola-mola or sunfish. This bay is a great place to practice Panga Ride and Snorkeling.

You can as well find: Penguins, Blue-footed boobies, Terns, Boobies, Sealions. Also you can snorkel and observe sea turtles, stingrays and puffer fishes.

AM: SANTIAGO ISLAND, PLAYA ESPUMILLA

Espumilla beach is located on the northern coast of Santiago Island in James Bay. During the last presence of the El Niño phenomenon, one of the two lagoons in this site underwent a process of sedimentation, thus causing the disappearance of a representative colony of flamingos. The main attractions are the palosanto forest and the nesting of baby turtles.

PM: PUERTO EGAS

It’s black beach is located on the west side of the island and is the main attraction of the island. Their volcanic tuff deposits have favored the formation of this special black sand beach.

This site is called Puerto Egas, because there was an attempt to start the exploitation of salt, which failed because the price of salt in the continent was very cheap, and did not justify its exploitation in Galapagos. The project and the infrastructure was left abandoned.

AM: RABIDA ISLAND

Rábida Island is unique due to the red color that colours all rocks and sand. The volcanic material in this island is very porous and external factors as rain, salty water, and sea breeze have acted as an oxidizing agent.

A short walk along a trail leads you to a coastal lagoon behind the beach which permits you to observe the land birds such as finches, doves, yellow warblers, and mockingbirds. At the lagoon there is a colony of flamingos.

PM: CHINESE HAT – SOMBREO CHINO

This is a small islet (1 sq km) located just off the southeastern tip of Santiago Island. It is a recent volcanic cone, shaped like a Chinese hat when seen from the north. On the west you can see lava formations, formed under the sea and raised upwards, this is why coral heads are found on the lava.

This is an excellent visit for interpretation of geological features such as lava tubes and lava flows. The landscape is covered by sea lions colonies, marine iguanas, and Galapagos penguins.

AM: SANTIAGO ISLAND, SULLIVAN BAY

Santiago, also called James, or San Salvador Island, is located in the west central part of the Galapagos archipelago. It is the fourth largest island in the archipelago (following Isabela, Fernandina and Santa Cruz). Along with some of the large western volcanoes of Isabela and Fernandina, Santiago is also volcanically active, with many young flows and cones to be seen, particularly along the south, west, and east coasts.

These may even be seen from the summit of Darwin Volcano and from space. A number of historic eruptions have been reported over the last 2 centuries. Santiago actually consists of two coalesced volcanoes: a typical shield volcano on the northwest end and a low, linear fissure volcano on the southeast end.

PM: BARTOLOME ISLAND

Bartolome Island is situated across Sullivan Bay. It has an altitude of 114 meters , from where we can observe one of the most beautiful sceneries of the Galapagos Islands such as: Volcanic cones, lunar – like craters, lava fields, and the famous Toba formed pinnacle eroded by the sea. There is very little vegetation on this island.

It has two breathtaking beaches where marine turtles exist and at the base of the pinnacle, as well as a very small colony of Galapagos penguins.

AM: BACHAS ISLAND, SANTA CRUZ

These two small beaches are found to the West of Turtle Cove. Their sand is made of decomposed coral, which makes it white and soft, making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches there is a small brackish water lagoon, where it is occasionally possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black- necked stilts and whimbrels.

The other beach is longer, but it has two old barges that were abandoned during the Second World War, when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategically point to protect the Panama Channel.

Galapagos Seaman Journey | Itinerary C1

A complete overview of Galapagos combining the amazing birdlife at Genovesa with natural history sites like Post office bay. Unique species like the waved albatross and the Red Footed boobies. Seaman Journey Itinerary A 2025

AM: Flight to Galapagos

On this day, you will fly to the Galapagos Island. Due to the Galapagos Government, a fee of 20 USD must be paid for the migration control card.

Once in Santa Cruz, passengers must go through an airport inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are being introduced to the archipelago. Also, this inspection point is where passengers have to pay for the entrance to the Galapagos National Park under the following parameters:

As of September 2024, Foreign Passengers $200 and Children $100 (under 12 years old).

Later on, your guide will pick you up and will carry your luggage to the bus. Passengers will arrive at the Catamaran Seaman Journey on a motorized boat called Panga.

PM: Bartolome Island

Bartolome Island is situated across Sullivan Bay. It has an altitude of 114 meters, from where we can observe one of the most beautiful sceneries of the Galapagos Islands such as Volcanic cones, lunar-like craters, lava fields, and the famous Toba-formed pinnacle eroded by the sea. There is very little vegetation on this island.

It has two breathtaking beaches where marine turtles exist and at the base of the pinnacle, a tiny colony of Galapagos penguins.

AM: Mosquera Islet

Located between North Seymour and Baltra, Mosquera Islet is one of the smallest islands in the Galápagos. It is of volcanic origin, formed by geological uplift, has no visible crater, and its terrain is very flat.

One of the most striking features of Mosquera is the contrast of colors. A beautiful beach of white sand, transparent turquoise waters, lush green vegetation, and jet-black lava rocks. Landscape photography is highly recommended here, especially in the golden light conditions of early morning or at sunset.

PM: North Seymour

North Seymour is a raised island (rather than volcanic). Therefore, it is generally flat and filled with rocks. There are good nesting sites here for a large population of magnificent frigatebirds. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the more open areas, and swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges.

Despite the tremendous surf that can pound the outer shore, sea lions haul out onto the beach and can be found body-surfing.

AM: Genovesa Island, El Barranco – The Cliff

The visitor site of El Barranco is located in the southern part of Darwin Bay on Genovesa Island. The trail is on volcanic rock, consists of 1.5 km, and can be done in about 2 hours. The youngest area of the island, from a geological point of view, lies in this area.

The cliff is located in the south and is composed of very fragile lava. The natural erosion in these lava flows has become the ideal place for nesting Storm Petrels. You can see two species of petrels that nest in cavities and holes in the lava.

One of its main predators is the short-eared owl. The red-footed booby nests only in the outer islands of the archipelago: Punta Pitt, Gardner (Floreana), Wolf, Darwin, and Genovesa. Also present on this island is the masked booby. During the “panga rides” along the cliffs, fur sea lions and several species of seabirds can be seen.

PM: Darwin Bay

This bay originated when the crater of this island collapsed below sea level. The wet landing is on a beautiful white coral sandy beach. This island is a favorite destination for birdwatchers, allowing the observation of several species including: red-footed boobies, masked boobies, wandering tattlers, lava gulls, whimbrels, yellow-crowned and black-crowned lava herons, and yellow warblers.

Continuing on the trail, visitors gradually climb to the edge of the cliff, where they can see Red-Foots nesting in the Mangrove trees below. Birdwatching opportunities include sightings of sharp-beaked finches, large cactus and ground finches, Galapagos doves, and swallow-tailed gulls. At the end of the trail, at the cliff’s edge, an incredible view of the island and the many birds living there can be observed.

AM: Plazas, Santa Cruz

Plazas is located to the east of Santa Cruz Island and forms part of two islands known as Islas Plazas. Despite its small size, some of the most interesting and outstanding species of the Galapagos are found here. The Plazas land iguanas are smaller than their relatives found on other islands.

Throughout the island, there are several hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. They are unique, recognisable at first glance by their black/gray colour, with a land iguana’s crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The large population of iguanas is due to the presence of tunas, their favourite food. Swallow-tailed gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other seabirds such as Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds,

PM: Santa Fe

Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, this island was formed from an uplift instead of a volcanic origin, which is why it is mostly flat. There are some theories which suggest this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. Santa Fe is home to a number of endemic species like the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land iguanas on the islands.

After disembarking in the beautiful and clear waters, you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail, many salt bushes can be seen as well as giant prickly pear cacti: gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. There are great possibilities for snorkelling with playful sea lions and tropical fish.

AM: David Rodriguez Land Tortoise Breeding Centre

In 2002, the Galapagos National Park Service undertook the programme for the breeding and care of tortoises in captivity, establishing for this purpose the Tortoise Breeding Centre at that time with the name of Jacinto Gordillo. In 2016, it changed its name to the Tortoise Breeding Centre with the name of “David Rodriguez,” in recognition of the 39 years of service to the Institution of the park ranger.

The David Rodriguez Tortoise Breeding Centre is located in the southeast of San Cristobal, 22.5 km from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Access is by land; the bus trip takes approximately 40 minutes and is located in the vicinity of Cerro Colorado. This breeding centre has been built to improve the population status of giant tortoises, Chelonoides chathamensis of San Cristóbal Island in an environment with conditions similar to their natural state, and in this way, promote the tourist development of San Cristóbal.

After the visit, you will be transferred to the San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.

Seaman Joruney itinerary B 2025

This day, you will fly to the Galapagos Island. Due to the Galapagos Government, a fee of 20 USD must be paid for the migration control card.

Later on, your guide will pick you up, and will carry your luggage to the bus. Passengers will arrive at the Catamaran Seaman Journey on a motorized boat called a panga.

PM: Gianni Arismendy Environmental Interpretation Centre

This is an interpretation center with exuberant gardens and stunning ocean views. Visitors at the interpretation center can learn a lot about the geological and human history of the islands, conservation facts and natural history. This is the oldest museum of Natural History in the Galapagos Islands which attempts to preserve the archipelago. It is indeed inspiring and motivating to watch and learn about all of their research and attempts.

AM: San Cristobal Island, Punta Pitt

Punta Pitt is located at the eastern end of the island of San Cristobal, with a beach of approximately 90 metres and several natural viewpoints overhanging an eroded hill of volcanic tuff.

A 1,400-metre trail leads from the beach called Oliviana to the top of the hill, which is coloured by different types of lava.

The strong winds present on the hill have caused a natural erosion that produces fantastic and memorable landscapes that look like something out of a science fiction movie.

A beautiful olive yellow colour with bright crystals from the erosion of lava and shells paints the sand of Oliviana beach, where sea lions lie in the sun watching the flight of frigate birds, pelicans, herons and seagulls.

Pitt islet is one of the few places where the three species of boobies (blue-footed, red-footed and masked) and the two species of frigate birds can be observed in the same area.

PM: Lobos Island, San Cristobal Island

Isla Lobos is a small, flat islet. The name Isla Lobos is given to it as it is home to several sea lions, which frolic on the beach; their brown fur stands out against the white sand. Isla Lobos is approximately 20 minutes by boat (10 kilometres) from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island.

Classified as a tourist diving site, it has 2 piers from which tourists can explore the bottom of the ocean accompanied by sea lions.

In its waters, a protected channel offers a fantastic place for snorkelling. An 850-metre long trail runs along the island, connecting the two piers. The estimated time of the walk is one hour, during which you can observe coastal vegetation of saltwater-tolerant plants. Its name is due to the two species of sea lions that inhabit it. The sea lions are related to the California sea lions, while the two-furred sea lions, known as fur seals, have their origins in Antarctica.

AM: Española Island, Gardner Bay

Located on the north-eastern coast of Hood Island, Gardner Bay offers an excellent beach for relaxing, swimming, and even kayaking, along with the opportunity to observe sea lions (Zalophus wollebaki). Here, we can also spot sharks in the crystal-clear ocean waters.

At this location, you can observe three species of Darwin finches:

A subspecies of the large-billed cactus finch (Geospiza fuliginosa), which resembles the large-billed terrestrial finch;

The small-beaked ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa); and

The singing finch (Certhidea Olivacea), another endemic subspecies.

Both resident and migratory birds can be observed in this area.

PM: Suarez Point

This area is excellent for spotting blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, and Nazca boobies. Situated on the oceanfront, it is a beautiful site where the large waved albatrosses use the cliff as a launching pad. The famous attraction here is the magnificent blowhole, which spurts water high into the air, reaching heights of at least 50 to 75 meters. This site offers wonderful photography opportunities.

AM: Cormorant Point, Champion Islet

This site probably offers the best flamingo lagoon in the Galapagos; it is also one of the largest in the islands. It’s situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-cheeked pintail ducks, and other migratory birds. It is very interesting to see the two distinct beaches: “The Green Beach” (due to its high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand) and the “Flour Sand Beach” which is made up of coral.

After the interesting walk, the group is taken to Champion Islet, a great place to enjoy snorkelling and underwater wildlife. Some of the animals that can be seen are sea turtles, sea lions, and multiple fish thanks to the nearby coral reef.

PM: Post Office Bay

Historically, this site is the location of a wooden barrel that was placed in the 18th century by the crew of a whaling ship. It has been used since this time by mariners and tourists as a post office. The idea is to carry letters or postcards to their destination by hand. Besides, this site was the landing area for some of the first colonists. This day’s afternoon is thought to be a relaxing time for visitors to enjoy the beach and the beauty of Galapagos.

AM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre

The Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre is located in the Galapagos National Park, on Charles Darwin Avenue, at a distance of 1 km from the Gus Angermeyer Tourist Pier. After a 40-minute walk, the attraction is part of the network of visitor sites of the Charles Darwin Foundation.

The visit starts at the information booth of the Galapagos National Park Service (SPNG). The trail leads to the Van Straelen Interpretation Centre, then to the breeding centre. From there, an elevated circular path begins, made of wood, from where you can observe Lonesome George and the tortoises of Española Island. It ends at the tortoise exhibition corral.

After the visit, you will be transferred to the Baltra airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.

Seaman Journey Itinerary C 2025

Today, you will fly to the Galapagos Islands. Due to the Galapagos Government’s regulations, a fee of 20 USD must be paid for the migration control card.

Once in Santa Cruz, passengers must go through an inspection point at the airport to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are being introduced to the archipelago. Additionally, this inspection point is where passengers have to pay for the entrance to the Galapagos National Park under the following parameters:

As of September 2024, foreign passengers $200 and children $100 (under 12 years old).

Our guide will pick you up and carry your luggage to the bus that transports tourists to the ferries to cross the Itabaca Channel. After this, you will be taken by another bus for the first visit to Ranch Manzanillo where visitors must wear comfortable walking shoes, light clothing, a waterproof jacket, sunblock lotion, and carry a camera and repellent for the first activity. The visit to Ranch Manzanillo includes a picnic lunch and a short walk before boarding the Motor Catamaran. It is important to follow these instructions in order to accomplish this itinerary properly. Please be aware that passengers’ luggage will be sent directly to the Seaman Journey yacht.

Santa Cruz offers excellent opportunities to observe the wild Galapagos Tortoises. Tracking tortoises is not the only exciting activity to be found in the highlands. There are also plenty of lava tubes, sinkholes, and craters ready to be explored. After this visit, they moved to the M/C Seaman Journey.

AM: Moreno Point, Isabela Island

Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island, between the Sierra Negra volcano and Cerro Azul volcano.

The trail runs along a Pahoehoe lava flow (solidified lava in the form of corrugated or an accordion) into a complex of coastal lagoons. Several species of birds can be found around these lakes and mangroves.

PM: Fernandina Island, Mangle Point

Off the eastern coast of Fernandina, Mangle Point can be found. It is a superior snorkelling site and a beautiful location for riding in a panga or zodiac through a grove of mangrove trees. A hike of about 1/2 mile is possible. While you are on your ride, you are likely to see sea lions, tortoises, pelicans, rays, and too many birds to name them all.

The course is approximately 3200m, and is made up of sand, pumice, lava, coral and vegetation where one can observe iguana burrows. It is an ideal place to see red and blue lobsters!

In Urbina Bay, you can see Darwin’s finches. Its main attraction is the land iguanas, which are larger than those in places like South Plaza Island and Galapagos. Tortoises also live in the wild; sometimes, even out of season, they are on the bottom of the islands. A large amount of vegetation can be observed such as chamomile and Rosewood, but among all these plants, the beautiful flowers of Darwin’s cotton, endemic to the Galapagos Islands, stand out.

PM: Isabela Island, Tagus Cove

Tagus Cove is located west of Darwin Volcano on Isabela Island. This was a favourite spot for pirates and whalers, and it was they who started the following tradition: the inscription of the names of boats. At the beginning of the trail, you will see a small cave where you will find inscriptions dating back to the 1800s.

Its name originated from a British warship that passed through the islands in 1814 looking for Galapagos Tortoises for food. Due to former eruptions, the substrate has a large amount of volcanic rocks of different sizes, among the most common are little balls of nearly spherical shape known as “lapilli” or petrified rain.

AM: Fernandina Island, Espinoza Point

Espinoza Point is a renowned location recognized for its extensive colonies of marine iguanas and as the habitat of unique species such as the flightless cormorant, Galapagos penguin, Galapagos hawk, and Galapagos snake.

PM: Vicente Roca Point

One of the most impressive and spectacular places in the enchanted Galapagos Islands, with high cliffs and tuffstone, ash, and lava formations giving this area a majestic touch, is Punta Vicente Roca. Located on the northwestern coast of the island, it comprises two distinct islets. This large bay boasts spectacular marine life.

Here, you can see seahorses, sea turtles, and the strange yet fascinating Mola-mola or sunfish. This bay is a great place for practicing Panga Rides and Snorkeling.

You can also find penguins, blue-footed boobies, terns, boobies, and sea lions. Additionally, you can snorkel and observe sea turtles, stingrays, and pufferfishes.

AM: Santiago Island, Espumilla Beach

Espumilla Beach is located on the northern coast of Santiago Island in James Bay. During the last occurrence of the El Niño phenomenon, one of the two lagoons at this site underwent a process of sedimentation, thus causing the disappearance of a representative colony of flamingos. The main attractions are the palo santo forest and the nesting of baby turtles.

PM: Puerto Egas, Santiago Island

Its black beach is located on the west side of the island and is the main attraction of the island. Its volcanic tuff deposits have favoured the formation of this special black sand beach.

This site is called Puerto Egas, because there was an attempt to start the exploitation of salt, which failed because the price of salt on the continent was very low, and did not justify its exploitation in Galapagos. The project and the infrastructure were left abandoned.

AM: Rabida Island

Rábida Island is unique due to the red colour that colours all rocks and sand. The volcanic material on this island is very porous and external factors such as rain, salty water, and sea breeze have acted as oxidising agents.

A short walk along a trail leads you to a coastal lagoon behind the beach, which allows you to observe land birds such as finches, doves, yellow warblers, and mockingbirds. At the lagoon, there is a colony of flamingos.

PM: Chinese Hat – Sombrero Chino

This is a small islet located just off the southeastern tip of Santiago Island. It is a recent volcanic cone, shaped like a Chinese hat when seen from the north. On the west, you can see lava formations, formed under the sea and raised upwards, which is why coral heads are found on the lava.

This is an excellent visit for interpretation of geological features such as lava tubes and lava flows. The landscape is covered by sea lion colonies, marine iguanas, and Galapagos penguins.

AM: Black Turtle Cove, Santa Cruz Island

A dinghy ride to Black Turtle Cove, located on the north coast of Santa Cruz, just west of Baltra, offers a window into a quiet hideaway of the Galapagos.

Once in the cove, the boat continues with the engines off and begins to explore the mangrove-protected cove.

Sea turtles feed and mate in the calm waters, and three species of sharks are found here: the black-tip shark, the white-tip shark, and the Galapagos shark.

Groups of spotted rays are also often seen, as well as egrets and herons.

Seaman Journey Itinerary C1 2025

AM: Genovesa, Island El Barranco – The Cliff

Throughout the island, there are several hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. They are unique, recognisable at first glance by their black/gray colour, with a land iguana’s crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The large population of iguanas is due to the presence of tunas, their favourite food. Swallow-tailed gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other seabirds such as Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds, and brown pelicans.

AM: San Cristobal Island

Seaman Journey Itinerary D 2025

Santa Cruz offers excellent opportunities to observe the wild Galapagos Tortoises. Tracking tortoises is not the only exciting activity to be found in the highlands. There are also plenty of lava tubes, sinkholes, and craters ready to be explored. After this visit, they moved to the M/C. Seaman Journey.

This is the oldest museum of Natural History in the Galapagos Islands which attempts to preserve the archipelago. It is indeed inspiring and motivating to watch and learn all of their research and attempts.

AM: San Cristobal Island, Galapaguera

A short visit will take place at the Galapaguera, a good place to observe Galapagos tortoises in their natural habitat.

San Cristobal island has endemic species such as the Mockingbird Nesomimus melanotis, lava lizard ( Microlophus bivittatus ), Chatham Leaf-toed Gecko ( Phyllodactylus lee i), and the tortoises. All of these species can be observed in this place, the beach is really big and it works as a nesting zone for marine tortoises. Between January and May, it is common to find the footprints of the female tortoises who have climbed to the dunes to deposit their eggs! This truly is a worthy experience to be a part of.

PM: Cerro Brujo

Cerro Brujo is a beautiful white coral beach where you can swim and watch birds and sea lions, plus you can snorkel. This is the first coast that Charles Darwin walked on, in 1835. In this marvelous lava landscape, you can watch seabirds like blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, herons, frigate birds and shore birds. The protected bay is well known for its young tortoises which like to swim around.

Located on the north-eastern coast of Hood, Gardner Bay offers an excellent beach to relax, swim and even kayak, plus the opportunity to observe sea lions ( Zalophus wollebaki ), here we can also observe sharks in the crystal clear ocean waters.

AM: Santiago Island, Sullivan Bay

Santiago, also called James, or San Salvador Island, is located in the west-central part of the Galapagos archipelago. It is the fourth largest island in the archipelago (following Isabela, Fernandina, and Santa Cruz). Along with some of the large western volcanoes of Isabela and Fernandina, Santiago is also volcanically active, with many young flows and cones to be seen, particularly along the south, west, and east coasts.

These may even be seen from the summit of Darwin Volcano and space. Several historic eruptions have been reported over the last 2 centuries. Santiago actually consists of two coalesced volcanoes: a typical shield volcano on the northwest end and a low, linear fissure volcano on the southeast end.

AM: Bachas Beach, Santa Cruz

These two small beaches are found to the West of Turtle Cove. Their sand is made of decomposed coral, which makes it white and soft, making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches, there is a small brackish water lagoon, where it is occasionally possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels.

The other beach is longer, but it has two old barges that were abandoned during the Second World War when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategic point to protect the Panama Channel.

After the morning excursion, you will be taken to the airport for your flight to the mainland.

Galapagos Seaman Journey | Main Deck

About the Galapagos Islands

Situated 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos archipelago consists of 19 islands and more than 40 islets, created six million years ago when they emerged from the Pacific in a flurry of volcanic activity. The islands were discovered in 1535 by Tomas de Berlanga, who sent the first known description of the Galapagos to the King of Spain: “…nothing but seals, and turtles, and such big tortoises that each could carry a man on top of itself, and many iguanas that are like serpents”. He also remarked on the tameness of the creatures: “…so silly that they do not know to flee, and many were caught in the hand”.

Perhaps our first association with the word “Galapagos” is the name “Darwin” – and for good reason. He sailed into the Galapagos Islands in 1835 on board the Beagle and was amazed by the extraordinary life he found on the islands. Each island forms a unique ecosystem, a series of specialized relationships that have adapted to the volcanic and isolated nature of the islands. As a result, the Galapagos Islands are home to a wide variety of endemic species.

It has been more than 450 years since their discovery, yet the islands remain largely intact thanks to the conservation efforts of the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station. A further boost to the protection of the islands was given in 1978, when UNESCO declared them a World Heritage Site. The waters around the Galapagos, which are the lifeblood of the archipelago, are also legally protected within the Galapagos Marine Reserve, making the islands one of the best places on the planet for scuba diving. The Galapagos Islands offer a unique interaction with nature, and their name is synonymous with survival and the celebration of the diversity of species on earth.

SEAMAN JOURNEY CRUISE REVIEWS

Cruise rating: 3.9 /5 - 5 customer reviews

Hello Elizabeth The Seaman cruise was wonderful ! Very comfortable, good food, excellent guide & crew. We had a very nice 7 nights - excellent itinerary. A highlight was snorkeling with sea lion cubs. Having the staff member meet us at Quito airport at the beginning was extremely helpful, as the processes there can be a bit confusing (especially the tourist control card - long queue, signs saying we had to scan a QR code, which did not work, etc...). Dear Diana, My husband and I have returned home to Australia now, and I would just like to thank you for helping us to organise a truly wonderful tour of Galapagos. We had a wonderful time. The replacement boat, Seaman Journey, was excellent. The naturalist guide, Marco Vizcaino, was fantastic. The whole crew was great; the food very good; the cabin extremely comfortable; and all the other guests were very nice. It would have been difficult to improve anything. I can highly recommend this boat and guide for any future clients you may be in touch with. Thank you for your excellent and very professional service at every stage of our planning for this tour. You did a wonderful job!! I will certainly recommend you and your company to friends who may be interested in touring Galapagos. best wishes, Janette October 2018 3.9
Hi Lilian, We are home from our amazing trip and very sad not to be lounging on a boat with beautiful views and the most amazing crew. I can't thank you enough for all of your help in the planning stages. Everyone in the group agrees this was the best vacation we've ever had. The crew spoiled us and took such good care of us. I can't say enough about the quality of food, the special care they took to cook for the various special dietary needs and just their overall effort to fulfill any request. I've definitely been spoiled and am ready to come back. Please pass along our thanks to the Seaman crew. And please know how much we appreciated all of your help organizing and answering our numerous questions. Margie Whitfield February 2018 3.9
Hi Peter, We had a fantastic time in the Galapagos. It was a very special trip as we got engaged! Damien asked me while we were out snorkeling one day and had just seen a shark. Crew on Seaman II was excellent. The food was delicious and plentiful. The itinerary was good, the snorkeling and land excursions were fun and interesting, and we felt 5 days on the boat was enough for us. We thought the additional cost of the wetsuits should have been included in the trip, especially at that time of the year when it's known for the water to be cold. Also, it would have been helpful to have more assistance and instruction on our first snorkeling session, how to properly wear mask etc., and the types of animals we would see and how they would act around us (ie that sea lions will come blow bubbles in your face and this is just them being playful). Dear Lilian, I've just returned from my Galapagos trip and I wanted to let you know that it was wonderful. Thank you so much for helping me organise it. The Seaman was a fantastic choice of boat and the crew and guide were just great. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Thank you again. This has been a real highlight of my whole time in South America. All the best, Melanie Geelan January 2020 3.9

Constant opportunities for wildlife and scenery

We made the right choice with the Seaman Journey

We felt that we lucked out with a fun group of fellow travelers, an attentive, smart & local guide, and a great crew on a very comfortable boat. For me, the snorkeling the final 3 days in clear, warm, abundant waters was the highlight. Little coral but where else can you swim with sea lions, penguins, sharks, eels, octopi, starfish, rays, schools of angelfish, and much, much more. I wish that we could have stayed on the boat for a few more days.

We’re here to help, 24/7.

mc galapagos seaman journey

M/C Galapagos Seaman Journey is a first-class catamaran offering superior comfort, style and stability. Her maximum capacity of 16 passengers combined with the spaciousness of a catamaran enables both connection with shipmates and privacy.

Why Sail Aboard Seaman Journey

Choose the Seaman Journey for a stable, roomy, sun-filled Galapagos journey. One of the best aspects of this yacht is that she is a catamaran. The multihull design of the Seaman Journey reduces rocking while under motor and at anchor, allowing for smoother sailing. The shallow draft of the catamaran’s hulls enables the ship to get closer to shore, and this design also creates more roomy cabins and spacious areas above deck, making the Seaman Journey an ideal Galapagos yacht. Finally, Seaman Journey uniquely offers a citizen science program, with opportunities for guests to document whales and penguins for scientific databases.

Our Galapagos experts have been aboard the Seaman Journey firsthand. Read our dedicated Seaman Journey Galapagos Review written by one of our specialists, or consult this page further for a detailed description of the catamaran, including ship specs, deck plan, cabin images and photo gallery. Our small ship cruise experts have been aboard nearly every first-class Galapagos cruise ship . Let us help you compare the Seaman Journey with other  small cruise ships , yachts and catamarans offering  Galapagos cruises and private  Galapagos yacht charters .

Hear it From Travelers Who've Sailed Aboard Seaman Journey

Surreal & animals welcomed us everywhere! I'd been to the Galapagos before, but traveling with my 8 year old this time. It now seemed vital that I book with someone I trust. AdventureSmith Explorations really knows what kind of trip people desire and they only work with the very best world-wide!

With very little notice (less than two weeks) Leslie at AdventureSmith provided options for a catamaran excursion. We went on the Seaman, which was a superb experience. Totally geared toward seeing the blue footed boobies!

The entire trip was awesome. The boat in the Galapagos was unrivaled. Excellent management of all travel plans. Our Adventure Specialist, Taylor, was great. Setting up this trip was simple and easy.

Wonderful trip to the Galapagos. Andrew Browning was very knowledgeable and accommodating in helping us plan our trip. Galapagos Islands cruise on Seaman Journey was absolutely great!

Second time to the Galapagos done right! No where else in the world do sea lions come to play with you. It’s amazing how the animals welcomed us everywhere we explored! When our boat was in route in between Isla Isabela and Isla Fernandina it took us a while to see the whales behind us, but the captain turned the ship around and all the dancing frigate birds above continued north and we on the Seaman Journey turned around to observe these whales put on a show for us. The marine iguanas would be baking themselves on volcanic rock then slowly walk to the water’s edge and then feed underwater on anything green. They weren’t underwater for that long but actually swimming on their side and seeing them swim back to land was one of my highlights. When a penguin was spotted everybody would silence themselves because it truly felt surreal.

Accommodations Review

Seaman Journey was a palace, a floating five star hotel. Our spacious room had quite a big bathroom for a boat. The sundeck up on the very top was the best lounging area, day and night. We had two outdoor meals, which made it seem like a super special occasion.

Every night before dinner we would have a briefing of the next day’s activities. I must admit that seeing a disembarking time of 6:15am made me a little nervous. But I felt for the Australians that chose to sleep in and miss out because it was a magical introduction to the island of Isabela. Our guide grew up on this island and shared stories of swimming in shark channels. Now the Galapagos are extremely regulated and not only for tourists, but locals have strict hours when they can go to certain places. I felt fortunate to have seen these sleeping sharks, definitely worth getting up early for! Yes the days were filled with quite a lot to do; yet there was time to relax as well.

Crew & Guides Review

Not sure how everybody felt when my daughter drove the panga back to our boat, but it was one of her highlights as she laughed the whole way.

Itinerary Review

Rabida island was one of the raddest reddest beaches I’ve ever been to! Also, this is where the sea lions played the most with us.

Transportation Review

We had been in Ecuador for over a month and all the traveling finally turned into a vacation on this trip when a local guide at the airport greeted us at 5:00am and took care of us. Then again on arrival in the Galapagos a local guide showed us the way. Being taken care of was relaxing.

We were assured that our luggage would end up on our boat and not to worry about anything as we hopped on a public bus to a small boat to cross between the islands of Baltra and Santa Cruz. Then we had our own mini bus to take us an hour from the north to the south where our ship awaits. I enjoyed this ride, as it was the greenest part of our journeys with a stop to meet the giant tortoises. Arrived just before dark to see the lively town of Puerto Ayora cheering on the volleyball game and all the kids on a fun playground (including my daughter).

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I had plenty opportunities in Ecuador to book a ‘cheaper trip’ like I did before. But honestly I started to recall how poor my first trip to the Galapagos was. I started hearing travelers share their experiences about their boats in the Galapagos. I heard horror stories about different boats; bad service, poor gear, guides unable to speak English, and even hunger from running out of food! The wise mother came out in me as I was traveling with my 8 year old this time. It now seemed vital that I book with someone I trust. AdventureSmith Explorations really knows what kind of trip people desire and they only work with the very best world-wide!

Traveler Advice

I sure hope that if you’re reading this you go to the Galapagos with the best, and honestly the next time I go I want to bring as many family and friends as I can to fill the boat so I can share the memories all the time! No other place is like this in the world!

With very little notice (less than two weeks) Leslie at AdventureSmith provided options for a catamaran excursion. We went on the Seaman, which was a superb experience. Totally geared toward seeing the blue footed boobies! All passengers, except for us, were fulfilling delayed covid-trips from 2020. We had a blend of ages - including four pre-teen and teenagers. (Three families including myself and my 27 yr old daughter, a single woman in her 60s, and a couple in their 30s.) Everyone was pleasant and engaged during the tours and the meals.

Seaman was a wonderful catamaran - friendly crew, very comfortable accomodations.  I was glad to be voyaging in the evening as I found the water movement to be comforting, not sickening. It was not too rough although we journeyed during the more volatile weather season.

Meals Review

I liked the variety of food selection. The chef was talented. The group meals were fun as we kept changing places at the table throughout our five days.

The guide that took our group of 13 was incredible (Carmillo of Seaman Journey) in his knowledge and obvious care for the environment which we travelled. Carmillo was superb -as was the crew. We had an unfortunate fluke incident of a broken foot. Carmillo, the Captain, and two crew members took us to the Emergency ward on Santa Cruz after dinner... on their free time. Carmillo translated for us with the doctor and staff, got in touch with AdverntureSmith - all communications handled professionally and with compassion by all players. It was a family experience all around!

We went on short notice to get to the Galapagos to see the mating season of the blue footed boobie. Our itinerary (southern islands) didn't disappoint and provided up close and extraordinary encounters with boobies, albatross, (and many different birds) in the most exquisite, breathtaking settings as we walked along cliffs high above the ocean. The snorkeling with sea lions, the kayaking, and daily expeditions were wonderful. The first day "education center" tour was a bit boring.

Given the SHORT prep time, really responsive. AdventureSmith was unable to help with hotel accomodations, nor arranging a tour in Guyaquil prior to the air transport to Galapagos. But we were so very happy with the Excursion Catamaran provider they found for us - Seaman Journey. Absolutely a wonderful customer-oriented experience. Very responsive and friendly.

6 to 7 days would be ideal.  Pack light= casual it key with good footwear for hiking. Go on a small vessel, and definitely expect to be surprised by the natural beauty.

The entire trip was awesome. The boat in the Galapagos was unrivaled. Guayaquil was a necessary stopover but not that exciting.

Seaman Journey was exquisite. Great food. Great staff. Great guides. Tried to recommend to someone else already. All other hotels were above expectations.

I think on meals, a little more explanation would be helpful. Included hotel meals were a nice surprise as I didn't realize as many were included as they were.

Guide Andres on Seaman was funny, a unique individual with great knowledge. He was excellent.

Excellent management of all travel plans. Taylor was great. Setting up this trip was simple and easy and she was helpful with any and all my questions.

Don't trust weather websites on the weather in the Galapagos. It is entirely island dependent and we overpacked warm clothes a bit.

  • Taylor Cranney

Seaman Journey was a wonderful catamaran! The crew and the accommodations were absolutely first class. The seas were very rocky (because we traveled in July), and there were times that we were airborne in our bunks at night. We were thankful that we had the Scop patches!

NOTHING could be improved as far as the food was concerned. Fresh salads, good meals were all beautifully served and delicious!

Our naturalist, Daniel  Gordillo, was extremely knowledgeable, professional and passionate about his work. He gave us a real feel for the wildlife and these wonderful islands. Since our trip was a little unconventional (as we left the cruise on Santa Cruz and took a motorboat to San Cristobal), Daniel actually accompanied us to our island (as he lives there).

We were very well prepared for this trip. However, that being said, it surpassed our expectations.

We would absolutely recommend AdventureSmith to anyone! The person we dealt with, Andrew Browning, was extremely professional and accommodating. We didn't book this trip until about 6 weeks before departure, and he gave us about 4 cruise options to choose from.

You can pack light! Everything was very casual ... bring plenty of sunscreen!

A Tale of Two Cities – a journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow

mc galapagos seaman journey

A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma – that’s how one great politician characterized Russia. Is it really so? Last Summer I had a chance to visit Russia’s two capitals; the trip was short but intense and quite exciting.

Planning the trip and getting Russian visa.

It was a spontaneous idea. Long ago we booked a private boat to cruise Croatia. When the time came to search for airfare, I found an attractive option via Moscow. I thought if we were going through Russia anyway why not to stop there for a few days. Great idea but here comes the reality. The first thing to learn was to visit Russia you need a visa. Google search on Russian visa returned a long list of requirements.

To apply you need an application (to be filled online but then still printed and brought to in-person appointment), a valid passport, one photo, and also (a quote from the Embassy website) a confirmation of the hotel reservation, a confirmation of reception of the tourist, and a register number from the Uniform Federal Register of the Tour Operators of the Federal Tourism Agency.

These hurdles are probably a turn off for most people considering such a trip, but as I was about to learn, when dealing with Russia have patience and don’t rush for judgment. Yes, the application form is long, but questions are simple and it does not take long to fill out. A worldly and confusing passage about the Uniform Federal Register is actually a one-page letter that Russian incoming tourism entities are very well aware of. Most hotels provide such a letter within 24 hours for free via email if you book a stay at that hotel. If you stay at a small bed and breakfast, Airbnb or with a family, there are plenty of online services that provide the letter for you for a nominal charge. Then get a photo, make sure your passport is valid 6 months after your departure from Russia date, print out an application and a letter you received from a hotel or a hosting service, and you are ready to apply.

If you leave in New York, Washington DC or Houston areas, you are lucky as there are Russian consulates there and you can submit your application directly and pay only a consular fee.  The access is strictly by appointments that you should request online at a consulate site . Start looking for an appointment at least three months in advance to get your visa in time. You (not your representative or an agent) must apply in person however if you travel with a group or a family on the same dates and itinerary, only one person from the party may submit all applications. The visa fee payment is accepted in the form of USPS money order only.

However, do not despair if this option is not feasible for you. There are Russian Visa processing centers that have a much more flexible attitude. You can apply by mail or show up with no appointment, you can get an application photo there, you can delegate the procedure to your representative or an agent, if needed you can get a visa in a much shorter time even in the same day, and you can use all form of payments. The service charge is reasonable –$33 plus the consulate fee. If however, this does not work for you either, the is also an option to obtain the visa via one of the visa services or via your travel agency. Speaking about fees – the consular charge for all kind of tourist visas is $160 for standard processing time (officially 20 working days but most of the time done in 2 weeks or less. The price goes up if you need the visa faster up to a whopping $600 for the same day service.

The embassy recommends 3-year multiple entry visas, so if you return to Russia within 3 years you won’t need to apply again, and even if you don’t – the fee for a single entry is the same. I did not want to pay for a Russian visa more than absolutely necessary and chose to apply directly at a consulate. The earliest available date for a visa appointment was about in two months, so I was right to start the process early.

I  booked an appointment and I started planning the actual trip. Marina and I decided on two days in St. Petersburg and one day in Moscow. Our daughter with a friend traveled with us, they have never been to Russia before so they wanted to stay in Moscow one extra day. There are plenty of accommodation options in both cities, but more in Moscow. All major hotel chains have properties there, and the rates are good due to a favorable exchange rate  To utilize my stash of IGH points I booked two rooms at Crown Plaza Ligovsky in St. Petersburg at just 30K per room per night. There are several IHG hotels in the city, but Crown Plaza had the best location – right off Nevsky prospect , St. Petersburg’s main thoroughfare. In Moscow, the choice was even better. We contemplated booking   Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton , even they were affordable, but at the end decided on Marriott Grand Hotel on Tverskaya street – just minutes walk from the Red Square . I made reservations online and emailed hotels asking to send for The Uniform Federal Register nonsense. I received them via email the very next day, our visa paperwork was ready.

The next task was to get from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Two Russian capitals are connected by all means of transportation from airplanes to riverboats, but we decided to take a train. The expresses make 403 mile-long journey in less than 4 hours, and depart almost hourly from Moscow train station in St. Petersburg that is conveniently located right across from Crown Plaza hotel. There are sleek bullet style “Sapsan”  trains  but we chose “Nevsky Express”. This unique though a bit old-fashion train leaves at 1pm and arrives at 5pm so we could have lunch while traveling. This is the only train that has a full-service restaurant – Sapsans only have bistros. The reviews said that the seat configuration is 3 X 3 in a glass door compartment, it feels a bit like you are in a fish tank, but the ride is much quieter than in an open coach. I booked the train tickets on Russian railways website : there is English version, credit cards are no problem, and the booking process is mostly straightforward.

The form advises you to enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport but then asks your paternal name (your father’s name). Obviously, there is no paternal name in US passports. I typed “X” in a paternal name box (we could put N/A or real names I guess). This was never questioned.. Also, as we learned later the seat map did not show the actual configuration correctly. I thought I booked four seats together, but we ended up in adjacent compartments. It was not a big deal as we spent most of a trip to a restaurant car anyway, but if seating is important to you, I suggest double checking at a ticket office.

Time flew and the day of the interview at the consulate came. The Russian mission in New York is located in a posh Upper East Side 91 th Street right near Central Park . Unlike other recently shut down Russian diplomatic entities in the USA this is an actual Consulate and not a spy safe house. The elegant French maison was initially built by Vanderbilt – Sloane couple at the beginning of the 20 th century and was one of the grandest private residences in the city at that time. It went a long way before becoming a Russian property but still keeps its grandeur look (which partially explains those high visa fees as the maintenance surely costs a lot). The appointment itself was fast and non-eventful. A guard at the entrance checked my name against a list of appointments and quickly let me in, there was only one person ahead of me at the visa window, and within minutes I handed my papers to the clerk. He examined the pages, asked a few simple questions, and directed me to the cashier to pay the fee. The visas were ready in 10 days the countdown to the trip began.

St. Petersburg

Aeroflot is the only airline that flies from the USA to Russia directly, and it only flies to Moscow. Interesting to know it is one of the oldest airlines in the world operating under same name since it started flying in 1923. The Russian capital has 4(!) international airports (I already wrote about it in an earlier post), but the largest Sheremetyevo  is Aeroflot’s hub and has frequent connections to other Russian cities including St. Petersburg. Aeroflot is a part of Skyteam alliance but booking on points via Delta or Air France/KLM will cost a lot especially in business class. The smart way is to book via Aeromexico . It charges only 50K each way for a business class ticket to Russia which you can transfer from Amex Membership Rewards. The transfer is not instant, but Aeromexico holds the reservation until points reach your account. Aeroflot business class excided my expectations. The seats were spacious and lay flat, the service was punctual and meals delicious. Unfortunately, due to sanctions, a cheese platter was not available  (no kidding), but wine choice was adequate. The thunderstorm hit New York area right before the takeoff, so JFK was at a ground stop. The delay was over two hours – obviously, we were missing the connecting flight to St. Petersburg. We worried but a flight attendant assured that everything would be taken care of. She was right!  We were rebooked on the next flight in an hour and arrived with a minimal delay.

Unlike Moscow, St. Petersburg has only one airport that is not that far from the city. It took about 30 minutes to get to Uprising Square –Crown Plaza was just around a corner. As époques and rulers changed so did the city toponymy. The name itself made a round trip from St. Petersburg to Leningrad (with a short detour to Petrograd) and then back to St. Petersburg. Uprising Square commemorates events in 1917 Russian Revolution. It got its name in 1918 after the Bolsheviks took control and managed to keep it till present.

Hotel Crown Plaza Ligovsky was surprisingly good, may be one of the best in its brand. The building used to be a school but a few years ago was acquired by IHG and completely remodeled. The lobby was a medium size, without an excess of ornaments but convenient and functional. Behind a reception, there was a souvenir shop (don’t shop – you find better variety at lower prices elsewhere) and a restaurant (don’t eat – for the same reason).

Our room was on the top level and had the floor to ceiling wall to wall window that if needed could be closed by a mechanical shade. The view was right at the train station plaza, but with the excellent soundproof the noise did not bother us at all. We settled, unpacked, refreshed and had some rest after a long trip. In the evening we stepped out to Nevsky Prospect that was beautifully lit and rightfully rivaled Paris Champs-Élysées. It is an excellent place for sightseeing, however for a good value dinner avoid its touristy eateries and turn to adjacent streets.

We ate at Smoke BBQ restaurant on Rubinstein . American style steak houses are a cool novelty in Russia. An owner tried and to some degree succeeded in creating a Texas ambiance. We ordered grilled vegetables and baby ribs with a local beer. The food was delicious though a bit heavy, so after the meal, we took a walk before returning to the hotel. The area is called  Vladimirskaya,  and if you are Dostoyevsky fan that where he and many of his characters lived. Built mostly in the middle of the 19 th century for low-income renters it never was a posh part of the capital, but the recent renovation and development brought a lot of life here. We walked along Vladimirsky street , reached our hotel and called it a day.

The next day was fully designated to explore St. Petersburg. The breakfast at the hotel was $15 per person. We politely declined and had a morning meal at a café just next door – a very nice and cozy Russian version of IHOP. The food was excellent and cost half of a hotel price, especially good were “ syrniki ” – Russian cheesecakes in the form of pancakes that are served warm. After breakfast, we met our guide for a historical center walking tour.

For two centuries St. Petersburg was the main city of Imperial Russia until Bolsheviks moved the capital to Moscow in 1918. Czar Peter the Great ordered the construction of his new residence on an empty swamp just conquered from Sweden in 1703.Miraculously the beautiful city was built from scratch. Nevsky Prospect was and still is St. Petersburg main thoroughfare, the imperial façade and the most desirable place to see and be seen. Naturally, the most part of our tour was along and around Nevsky. St. Petersburg impresses and inspires, especially if you are lucky to be there on a warm sunny day. We were blessed with the weather and enjoyed our time to the fullest. The czar’s planners designed the city in the beautiful proportional classical style. To the credit of consequent authorities, St. Petersburg original look was preserved through times (unlike Moscow but more on it later).

We walked toward the Admiralty and observed a palace after a palace, a monument after a monument, and even retail stores were historical and architectural gems. We stopped by Elyseevsky Gastronomy that now is more a tourist attraction than a shop.  The visitors observe Russian delicacies on display from dozens of types of caviar to a chocolate blob in the form of Lenin’s head.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Walking few blocks down is probably Nevsky most interesting point. Czar Alexander I ordered the construction of Kazan Cathedral in 1801 and later it was dedicated to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in 1812 war . The architect decided to use St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome as a prototype but instead of placing it on some kind of a square put it right on the city main street with the colonnade stretching along. We stepped inside to see the interior.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Among numerous artifacts commemorating that war, we noticed the keys of Berlin. After Napoleon invasion failed, the Russian army went on the offensive and chased the French troops all the way to Paris. Along the way, they captured Berlin  – that time an ordinary Prussian town. By the customs of that time, the elders presented the city keys to the victors. These keys along with keys from other conquered places are kept in Kazan cathedral ever since. During the World War the Nazis wanted the keys back, they siege St. Petersburg for 900 days but failed to capture it and were eventually defeated. Maybe the keys were the reason?

mc galapagos seaman journey

Facing the cathedral on the left side and behind, across Nevsky there is an astonishing Christ the Savior on the Blood cathedral. For some it may reassemble St. Basil on Red Square in Moscow but only from a distance. It was built in 19th century exactly at the place where Czar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 (therefore called on the Blood). The bridge across Griboedov canal is the best place to take pictures.

mc galapagos seaman journey

We continued on passing among other beautiful buildings the Stroganov Palace (of Beef Stroganoff fame) to Moika river embankment where a booked private boat was waiting for us for St. Petersburg rivers and canals tour.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Before boarding, we stopped by Mamma Roma restaurant (Russian analog of Olive Garden)  and got pizzas, salads, pasta, and a large bottle of Pino. The lunch cruise was relaxing and delightful.

mc galapagos seaman journey

We went into a mighty Neva river , then to smaller and quieter inner rivers and canals. From the water St. Petersburg looked different and even more beautiful.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The ride took an hour and a half, just the right time to finish the picnic.

After pizza and wine, we would not mind a nap, but it was not in our program. Of course, there was much more to see in St. Petersburg, but we wanted to have at least a glimpse of its imperial suburbs – places where czars had their summer residences. We choose Pushkin –Czarina Catherine park and palace . The original town name was Tsarskoye Selo (Czar’s village), but in the Soviet era, it was renamed after the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin who studied there. Pushkin town is about 30 miles from St. Petersburg, the arranged mini-bus was waiting for us by the pier, the ride took almost an hour as we drove from the center via recent quarters to Pulkovo highway and a belt road.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The palace is the baroque style gem and features the famous Amber room .

mc galapagos seaman journey

The adjacent park is equally nice, designed in a traditional manner with English and French garden parts and is kept impeccably well. We visited it on a late afternoon and took the best pictures of the whole trip.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Our tour ended there. We parted with the guide and took a 30-minute walk from the park through the town to the train station. The town itself was heavily damaged during the war (the Nazis were here), most of the buildings were constructed in the 1940 th and 1950 th . Nevertheless, the town is upscale, green, clean, comfortable and a very desirable place to live for St. Petersburg folks who can afford it. From the station, a suburban train brought us to the city center at an architecturally interesting Vitebsky Vokzal.

We took the metro to our hotel which was just two stops away and noticed its style and decor to compare to Moscow’s later on. The dinner that night was at Russkaya Rybalka ( The Russian Fishing)  restaurant on Krestovsky island . Naturally, it had a seafood menu. We had an excellent sturgeon with a lot of appetizers and then tasty desserts to finish the feast.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Next morning was bright and sunny, but sadly we had to leave St. Petersburg. Our train was in the afternoon, so we still had some time to explore the city a bit more. Our last visit was at the Hermitage museum .

mc galapagos seaman journey

It hosts one of the best fine art collections in the world. It was started by czars and therefore located in the Imperial Winter Palace .

mc galapagos seaman journey

After czars, the collection became a national museum and the must-see place for anyone visiting St. Petersburg even for a short time.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The exposition was enormous, but we were in a rush so to optimize the time I arranged a guide who whisked us inside past the queue and showed all the museum highlights in just two hours (almost impossible task but our guide Nataliya handled it splendidly).

mc galapagos seaman journey

The time after the tour was pretty much the race against the clock. We caught Uber at the Palace square and (luckily with no traffic) got back to the hotel.  Strategically our bags were already packed, so all needed was a checkout. Even though the train station was across the street, we had to enter through a central entrance to pass security which was a bit of a walk. Still, we boarded the train in time.

We settled in our seats and right after the departure headed to the restaurant car. A chicken caesar salad was stupendous, pretty fresh and quite eatable. The restaurant car was more spacious than a cramped compartment, so we hang there after we finished the meal. The first half of a way from St. Petersburg was mostly woods, then as we were getting closer to Moscow, the landscape became more diverse. We crossed Volga river at Tver .

After that it was less than an hour to the destination, the area outside became more and more urban and quickly turned to Moscow suburbs. On the train, we were offered a meet and greet taxi service at a rip off price $30 per ride (street taxis are about twice cheaper, and Uber costs even less), but been pressed in time I sighed and booked it. I believe it was worth it as a driver met us right at a carriage door and led straight to a car through the chaos of a train station plaza. The ride to Marriott Grand Hotel took about 30 min on Sadovoye Koltso (Garden Ring). We did not see any gardens though, just big city traffic. We arrived at the hotel and entered the lobby. The Moscow part of the trip had begun.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Moscow isn’t St. Petersburg, you realize it at the first moment you arrive at the official Russian capital. While proper, classical and phlegmatic St. Petersburg is to fall in love at first sight, an energetic, chaotic, and somewhat barbarian Moscow guards its affections. So what you might not like the byzantine labyrinths of its central streets, the elbowing crowds and the loud attitude on display everywhere – “if you make it there you make it anywhere” so truly applies here. Every Russian knows all roads to success in any walk of life lead to Moscow.

Marriott Grand Hotel huge lobby was hustling and bustling at that busy afternoon hour. A dozen receptionists worked hard checking in guests, but a line seemed to stay unabated. I noticed Marriott Elite sign by one of the clerks and moved right there. In a split of a second between a checked in guest left and a next in line could approach I jumped in and announced my Marriott Gold status. A clerk showed no emotion but took my confirmation paper, did few computer keystrokes, apparently confirmed that I indeed was an elite, checked me in quickly and even gave a suite upgrade and access to an executive lounge. Well, sometimes it pays to be rude!

The suite at Marriott Grand hotel was huge with a bedroom separated from the living room, two TV’s, two bathrooms and also a full kitchen with a side by side refrigerator. Too bad we were only here for one night. After settling, we went to check the executive lounge. The lounge was nicely set on two levels with large windows overlooking Moscow city skyline. The evening chef oeuvres were served. We had a dinner reserved in a couple of hours but had few bites with a glass of chardonnay.

The dinner was booked at Rukav (Sleeve) art café in Taganka neighborhood – a half an hour metro ride from our hotel.  The place was cozy, with an artistic decor although a bit kitschy to our taste. To enter the dining room it looks like you must slide down a pipe but don’t worry there is stairs as well. Most of the guests were tourists, but the ambiance was not touristy at all. A band of musicians in retirement age played American jazz. We felt relaxed, let down our guards a bit and ordered way more food we could consume.

mc galapagos seaman journey

As usual, after stupendous Russian dinners, we needed a good walk before going to bed, so we headed to Red Square. It was night, but the symbolic place was fantastically lit and full of people.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The significant part of the square was fenced off for some kind of a festival that either just happened or was about to happen, the grandeur view was obstructed and that was a disappointment.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Still, the illuminated buildings, the Kremlin towers, St. Basil cathedral looked beautiful, we took tons of pictures then walked about a mile off the square along Tverskaya street to our hotel and had a well-deserved rest.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The next day was our last in Moscow and Russia, but before leaving, we had a walking tour of Red Square and surrounding sites. After the breakfast at the lounge that was adequate but mediocre, we met our guide at the hotel lobby and headed down Tverskaya Street toward Kremlin .

We passed Pushkin Square (the great Russian poet loved both Russian capitals), then Kamergersky Lane, a pedestrian street, recently renovated in 19 th -century belle époque style. Unlike more democratic Arbat here is where affluent, well-to-do Muscovites spend their past time in numerous posh restaurants and night clubs.

mc galapagos seaman journey

Approaching Red Square, it was hard to miss a massive red brick white roof building blending with Kremlin walls. It actually was built at the end of the 19 th century and now accommodates Russian State historical Museum – a must-see for Russia’s history buffs. Just before entering the square you see the Four Seasons (former Moscow) hotel on your left and the Ritz – Carlton (former National) hotel on your right. As the grandest hotel in Moscow, Ritz hosted both the current and the former US presidents and has a somewhat tainted reputation as infamous “pee”  tapes were allegedly made here.

Finally, we were at Red Square. Last night it was magically lit, but now in the morning sun, it looked totally different. Unfortunately, the fence that obstructed the wholesome view was still there, the souvenir shops were opening, and the hordes of tourists started arriving. Usually, the best view to Lenin Mausoleum , the Kremlin wall and towers is from the opposite side of the square, the grand shopping gallery named the State Department Store (yes really), but now we had to walk around the fence and get to the Kremlin side  too close to for a panoramic view. We saw Mausoleum still functioning. Although not that long as in Soviet times, the line to enter was still formidable (maybe because this attraction was free). Behind the Mausoleum was Kremlin separated from the square by a monumental red brick wall. Hovering above the wall was the top part and the baroque roof of Great Kremlin Palace

We walked to the other side of the square to see the majestic St. Basil Cathedral . While its multi-color domes became a signature view of Moscow the actual story of this unique masterpiece is rather dramatic. Built in the 16 th century as one of the wonders of the world it later was abandoned and at some point during Stalin rule designated to be blown up as it was in the way of Red Army parades. A legend says on the eve of the destruction the Moscow principal architect chained himself to the building and proclaimed that if the cathedral is blown he is to be blown as well. The demolition was canceled, the cathedral is still there. It is nicely restored and now features icons and ancient Russian artifacts. Although not originally belonging to the cathedral the interior creates the ambiance of that époque. Unlike seeing Lenin’s corps , you have to buy a ticket to visit, but it is well worth the fee.

Past the cathedral is Moskva (Moscow) river and the bridge across it. We walked halfway on the bridge to the excellent vantage point with a magnificent panoramic view of the city.

mc galapagos seaman journey

The area on the other side of the bridge is called Zamoskvorechye (Beyond Moscow river).  It was also heavily reconstructed in the 20 th and 21st centuries but feels more humane. Many great museums and theaters are located there including the famous Tretyakov Gallery . Facing Kremlin and St. Basil cathedral, on the right side we saw a somewhat awkward looking park. The “old city” that used to be in that area was totally demolished in 1960 th   to make space for the Soviet-style “ Rossiya” hotel – at that time the largest in the world. In the new era, the hotel was demolished, and a park was created in its place. The park, however, does not look great and Muscovites’ opinion about it differs. While some insist that a bad park is better than no park, others lament the old hotel saying that it’s functionality overweighed it’s ugliness as it was a moderately priced accommodation option for Moscow visitors at a great location and then it was gone. The opposite side of the hotel –turned – park offered an astonishing view of the Kremlin wall and towers. A bit further you see the main Russian Orthodox cathedral – Christ the Savior . Build initially in the 19 th century this cathedral was less lucky than St. Basil as it was entirely demolished by Bolsheviks in 1931. For a long time, a public swimming pool was located there. Then it also was leveled, and the new cathedral was built – even more significant than the original. The new cathedral is grandiose, and the inside decorations are marvelous. It is very well worth the visit but keep in mind the conservative dress is required (no shorts or mini-skirts).

From the bridge, we returned to the Red Square to see the guards change at the eternal fire by the Unknown Soldier tomb. It was about 10-minute walk passing the places we already visited, so I decided it was a good moment to ask our guide what he thinks about Putin. He answered that Putin is incredibly popular among many Russians including himself as he brought prosperity and stability to the country. In response, I gently pointed out that a lack of democracy may be a too big price to pay for prosperity which is a relative term anyway. I got a firm pushback, something like “who are you to judge,” and dropped the topic for good. Conveniently, we arrived at the change of the guards’ place and focused our attention on it. The ceremony takes place every hour on the hour and even though it is no comparison to one at Buckingham palace still entertaining to watch as specially trained cadets demonstrate their unique marching technique.

After the ceremony, it was the time to part. Marina and I had to go back to the hotel and then to the airport to fly to Croatia while our daughter and a friend stayed in Moscow and continued with the tour.  What we missed and they enjoyed was a visit to Kremlin. This fortress inside the city is the Russian president official residence, but the historical part of it is open to the public. With the general admission ticket, you see beautiful churches and some other relics like the “ Czar – Cannon ” that never actually fired. A coveted extra admission to the Armory Chamber  is somewhat challenging to get, but the guide was able to arrange it. That night Polina and a friend dined at Michelin mentioned White Rabbit restaurant and liked it very much.

mc galapagos seaman journey

That was our blitz tour of Russia. We saw so much in these three days, yet it was just a tiny fraction of what we could and should possibly see, and that was only two cities!  Do come here and stay longer, one day we will go back too, that time for a more extended visit

Hi everyone,

I posted a detailed review in the Consulate reviews section, so if you're interested you can read it here .

I had no problem getting into the Embassy because we called and emailed beforehand to make sure my name was on the list. If you are the petitioner and are planning to accompany your spouse, definitely do this as it'll just be one less bit of stress for you in this process. Indeed, they had a separate list and I saw my name there, so they check these kinds of things.

There were A LOT of people there, a huge line outside the Embassy, but it moved very quickly. The immigrant visa area was also jam packed and crowded with people. We were number 10 in the line. The whole process took about 3 hours from start to finish, mostly just waiting until we were called. Get there early! I'd imagine the later you come, the longer you will wait. We arrived at 8:00am, but our official appointment was 8:30am.

Registration/fingerprinting:

This process took only a few minutes, but we had to wait for about an hour and a half before they called our number.

The registration woman asked my husband his age and his name, where he is working, has he ever had any other names and if he has lived anywhere else besides Russia. She then asked for the following documents:

- Original Russian marriage certificate (no copy/translation necessary; it was returned after the interview)

- Original Russian birth certificate (no copy/translation necessary; it was returned after the interview)

- Original military ticket/booklet (they asked us for a copy as well, we handed them a complete copy with a complete translation and they kept it; the original was returned after the interview)

- Original police certificate (they also asked for a copy, so we gave her the copy plus translation, but they kept the original. This was the only original document they didn't return to us.)

- My husband's foreign passport (no copy was necessary)

The lady then asked for "financial documents," by which she meant the Affidavit of Support (I-864). I handed her a huge stack of these papers which included:

- Letter of explanation for why I wasn't required to file taxes

- Cover letter explaining my proof of domicile in the US, plus evidence to support that (voting record, mail received at US address, letter of resignation from job in Russia, etc.)

- My joint sponsor's I-864 (the lady asked me: "Is this your mother?" and I affirmed that my mom was the joint-sponsor.)

- Cover letter written by my joint sponsor explaining her financial situation

- My joint sponsor's household member I-864A form

- My joint sponsor's IRS transcripts for the last three years, and copies of W-2 forms as well

- My joint sponsor's bank statements for the last 12 months (this was necessary because we used assets)

- My joint sponsor's proof of US domicile, including US birth certificate, marriage certificate (because of the household member), and copies of the joint sponsor and household member's passports.

After all that, they took my husband's fingerprints. We then waited another hour and they called our number again, this time for the interview.

Our interview was extremely short, much shorter than what I had read and heard about previous DCF Moscow experiences. The IO was extremely friendly. Both my husband and I went into the interview room together, and I thought that perhaps they would separate us and interview us separately, but I just sat down and she started interviewing us together. First, my husband took the oath in Russian, and then she started asking him questions in English. She asked him only two questions: "What do you do for work?" and "How did the two of you meet?". She typed in some information while he was answering. After that, she asked me three questions: "Does your mother (joint sponsor) have anyone else in her household (brothers or sisters)?" "How long have you been living in Russia?" and "Where are you planning to move back to in the US?" She also was a bit confused by the huge stack of papers, and she asked me if my mom had filled out an I-864, I told her yes, it's there in the pile somewhere. She found it and then she asked my husband when he had taken the medical exam, we explained that we'd done it a few days earlier. Then she said that "Everything looks great" and that as soon as the results of the medical are in, we should expect the approved visa to arrive about a week later. She basically told us we were approved! Woohoo! (They kept the passport obviously.)

I just want to say thanks to everyone on VJ! I seriously couldn't have done it without this site. Thanks again for everyone's input and advice!

As usual, a thoroughly detailed and immensely helpful post.

What a relief for you, and you must be on Cloud 9!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC , 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
