Milton Nascimento, one of the greatest representatives of the so-called Brazilian Popular Music, announced in October last year that in 2022 he would carry out a farewell tour, “A Última Sessão de Música”, the same name as one of the songs on the album “Milagre dos Peixes” , published in 1973.

In a publication in official page of the musician on the social network Instagram were announced as tour dates, which include concerts in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and the United States of America.

Health problems

The famous composer of classics like “Canção da América” and “Maria Maria” completes 88 years of life in October.

Although his voice has no problems with age, nor his health problems, Milton Nascimento has had difficulties, in recent years, in fulfilling his obligations due to several hospitalizations, at an age of which he had to be a catheterization.

In his last performances before the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, in Brazil, his state of combat was evident, as well as the difficulties in walking on stage, so he was seated.

However, in the live presentations of the pandemic that he gave in his virtual residence during the pandemic, he showed that his voice remains unbreakable.

60 years of career

The singer, songwriter and musicians, who completes 60 years of career, recorded 34 years and has performed with groups and musicians from other countries, such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Mercedes Sosa, Fito Paez, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Sting, Paul Simon and Duran Duran, in addition to his compatriots Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, among others.

The Brazilian received five Grammy Awards, including one in 1997 in the World Music category for his album “Nascimento”, which he received and a Latin Grammy in 2000 for Best Contemporary Pop Album for “Crooner”.

Milton Nascimento says goodbye to the stage, but ‘never to the music’

The colossal brazilian singer-songwriter’s farewell tour comes to the birchmere.

milton nascimento europe tour 2022

Milton Nascimento says he never planned the beautiful zigzags of his musical career, and if you trace the contours of his teeming songbook, you’ll have no choice but to believe him.

In 1972, he quietly etched his greatness in stone with “Clube da Esquina,” a subtle and sumptuous collaborative album with Lô Borges named after the duo’s musical coterie, the “street corner club.” Two years later, Nascimento was singing breathtaking mockingbird duets with Wayne Shorter’s saxophone. By the time the curtain fell on the 1990s, Nascimento’s bright, clarifying voice had won the admiration of Herbie Hancock; Paul Simon; Earth, Wind and Fire; Duran Duran; Pat Metheny; Peter Gabriel; and James Taylor. And he’d recorded with them all, too.

But after six decades of open-minded exploration and big-hearted improvisation, Nascimento had to map his current chapter in advance. “Everything in my life happens naturally, and with music it’s the same,” Nascimento, 79, says in an email from a farewell tour that has already woven its way through Europe and Brazil. “After 60 years of career, the time has come. But as I’ve been saying, I say goodbye to the stages, never to the music.”

It’s hard to imagine saying goodbye to Nascimento’s music. In his prime, his voice seemed to exist in some anti-gravitational state between floating and soaring, and his ability to suspend exquisite melodies over motley song forms led him toward alliances with pop stars of nearly every stripe. Nascimento still speaks of his co-creators with all the warmth you hear in his music, but he’s quick to extend that gratitude to his most loyal collaborators — his listeners.

“I often say without friendship I would be nothing,” Nascimento says. “The most important things on my journey happened because of the great friends who crossed my path. Another thing I always say is this: Without friendship, I don’t even cross the street.”

His Clear, passionate voice captures the spirit of Brazil

Milton Nascimento’s milestone year marks the 50th anniversary of one of Brazil’s most important albums and his final concert tour.

Milton Nascimento’s clear, passionate voice captures the spirit of Brazil.

It rises from the rich, red soil of his homeland, Minas Gerais, where he banded with other young musicians to create the Clube da Esquina, The Street Corner Club.

2022 marks the 50 th anniversary of the Clube da Esquina album, one of Brazil’s 10 most important recordings. It also celebrates Nascimento’s six-decade career with his final concert tour, including six US cities.

Nascimento’s music has crossed cultures on a global scale. New York’s Verve Records signed his first album contract. Wayne Shorter’s Native Dancer established Nascimento internationally. He’s collaborated with Elis Regina, Earth, Wind & Fire, Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Duran Duran, and dozens more.

Milton Nascimento has five Grammy Awards, including Best World Music Album .

Read and listen to new weekly episodes of The Brazilian Minute.

Milton Nascimento's Milestone Year; The LP album cover of 1972's 'Clube da Esquina', rated as one of Brazil's greatest recordings.

It’s only fitting that the year that marks Brazil’s Bicentennial also celebrates one of the country’s most beloved singer/songwriters.

Milton Nascimento’s creative roots are as strikingly unique as his vocal range. From its resonant depth to the chime-like clarity of his falsetto mastery.

His musical influences are of equal parts. Firstly, Nascimento combines a unique international vision via jazz, rock, and the world. Secondly, he remains introspectively Brazilian; a result of putting down roots in the rich, red soil of his hometown of Belo Horizonte.

2022 is a milestone year for Milton Nascimento. It brings the 50 th anniversary of the Clube da Esquina album, one of Brazil’s greatest recordings. It salutes his musical career of 60 years.

Finally, 2022 marks Milton Nascimento’s final concert tour, across Brazil, the United States, and select European venues.

Putting Down Musical Roots

Nascimento’s story offers one of the most impressive vignettes in the panorama of modern Brazilian music. It is far removed from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, nor within the scent of the African spice of Bahia.

Nascimento’s music begins inland, in the hill country shadows of Minas Gerais. This landlocked state is known for its diamonds, gold, and gems.

In 1945, a small town called Três Pontas inherited its own musical treasure from Rio. A three-year-old boy named Milton Nascimento.

A move to Belo Horizonte would inspire him to uniquely redefine Brazilian music. He was influenced by the traditions of the region and its folkloric, colonial past. Even the sentimental, melancholy of the ‘Toada’, the narrative song form that is distinctive to the region.

Nascimento’s creative drive drew many fine musicians to his side. This includes pianist Wagner Tiso, Lo Borges, Beto Guedes, songwriter Fernando Brandt, and guitarist Toninho Horta.

Collectively this group of young musical innovators became known as the ‘Street Corner Club’ or ‘Clube da Esquina’.

Clube da Esquina Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

In 1972, the group joined Milton Nascimento and co-leader Borges in a Rio de Janeiro studio to record Clube Da Esquina . The double album spawned hit singles, notably ‘Cravo e Canela’ (Clove and Cinnamon), ‘Cais’ (The Pier), and ‘Nada Será Como Antes’ (Nothing Will Be As It Was). Rolling Stone Brasil’s list of ‘Brazil Top 100 Songs’ ranks Clube Da Esquina at #7.

The album drew on a number of diverse musical influences, including jazz, rock, Chopin, and the Beatles. Surprisingly, Clube Da Esquina has influenced the direction of Brazilian music for decades.

One of Milton’s best-known albums in the U.S. is ‘Native Dancer’, his 1975 album with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Shorter’s reputation as an alumnus with Miles Davis and Weather Report helped to launch Nascimento’s music internationally. Milton’s voice can also be heard on Paul Simon’s ‘The Rhythm Of The Saints’ and Sarah Vaughan’s ‘Brazilian Romance’ album. Nascimento co-wrote and recorded ‘Breath After Breath’ with Duran Duran in 1993.

He has participated with James Taylor, Peter Gabriel, Jon Anderson, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and Quincy Jones. Numerous U.S.-based musicians, including the Manhattan Transfer and Stan Getz, have recorded his music.

In 2020, Brazilian American jazz pianist Antonio Adolfo released a tribute album titled Bruma: Celebrating Milton Nascimento .

Milton Nascimento’s Milestone Year Takes Center Stage

Milton Nascimento is one of the rare vocalists who can draw audiences around the world, regardless of language. He has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Latin America.

2022 will mark his final concert tour. Nascimento’s official announcement came on Sunday night, May 15 th with a video. Read the complete story .

A Grammy nominee in 1991 for Txai and in 1995 for Angelus , he won the ‘Best World Music Album’ award in 1997 for his self-titled release Nascimento . He captured 1992’s Down Beat International Critic’s Poll and 1991’s Down Beat Readers’ Poll.

Listen To Milton Nascimento’s Music

Milton’s sound draws from the undercurrents of numerous styles and cultures. This includes centuries-old sacred and folk expressions, from African tribal chants to Gregorian chants.

Nascimento’s soulful voice has fluid command of both lower and upper registers. His falsetto range is distinctively powerful and passionate.

He sings of community, of the earth, of friendship and love, of truth and character. The things that bind all humanity together.

With 60 years of music and 42 memorable albums to enjoy, it’s no small wonder that Milton Nascimento is able to touch us so deeply with just a single phrase.

25 ANOS DE TRAVESSIA

"Nascimento transcends sound barrier", read the headline of "The Boston Globe", when commenting the tour 1986, which led more than 100 thousand people to concerts given in 21 cities in the United States, Canada, France, Denmark, England and Spain. If Milton's voice can transcend the sound barrier, as the newspaper states, the success of this work, specially after this trip abroad, transcends important boundaries for Brazilian music, which contaminates audiences of all languages and ages, and showcases an art form of universal reach, without losing the strength that comes from its Brazilian roots. "Singing was seeking the way to the Sun" (Nascimento and Brant). This search, which began in the 1960's in Belo Horizonte, has always been persistent and, several times, harsh. Today, after more than 20 years, audiences of all corners of Brazil, from the Oiapoque to the Chuí; from several regions of the United States - from coast to coast -, or from several countries all over the world get hyped when they hear Milton's singing and can seem him illuminated, in a trajectory that "is the way to the Sun". Or the heart of any person, anywhere in the globe, who searches, honestly, the true and permanent values of life. "My music is my life, and my life is to sing whatever else lies within me" says the artist. In the United States, with performances in Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Detroit, Chicago, New York (2 nights) and Boston, Milton always found packed theatres and more: his LP "Encontros e Despedidas", which held the 32nd place in the Jazz section of Billboard, climbed in only 3 weeks to the 7th post of the top selling albums in the US. An unheard of achievement, if we take into account that the record was totally produced in Brazil, and recorded in Portuguese. Success still held other surprises in North America. The greatest names in Jazz of the time, such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick COrea and Bob McFerrin didn't let the opportunity slide by: knowing of Milton's work's quality, several of them did not hesitate to going on stage with him and lending from their talents, playing together in several concerts. The same happened in Montreal, in Canada, where Milton took part in the International Jazz Festival, opened by the fantastic Ella Fitzgerald. Copenhague's skies were cloudy and a fresh breeze blew in the awe-inspiring Parliament Plaza. But none of these signs were enough to stop 14 thousand people from filling the square to wait for Milton Nascimento. A very special crowd for Milton, who performed for the fourth time in Denmark, a country with a culture as different from ours as could be, and in Copenhague, enchanted city, worthy of its Tivoly Park and the magical storyteller immortal Andersen. The concert lasted for more than an hour, and took place under pouring rain. But the show went on, and nobody left. The square looked even more beautiful, colored by the thousands of umbrellas of people dancing to the sound of Maria Maria, or Nos Bailes da Vida. In every newspaper and TV channels, just and generous spaces were granted to applaud the strength of Brazilian music. In one, a curious title read: "Fourteen thousand people in the wet concert". In Paris, Milton participated in the Festival Coleurs Bresil, a joint operation by the Ministries for culture of both Brazil and France. When arriving to the Zenith Theatre, Milton encountered yet again his friend and "brother" Wayne Shorter, with his sax ready to come into action. Later, in the south of France, in a town called Vienne, a concert in an immense roman amphitheater, with its benches of secular stones. In the dark night, the crowd watched the show in silence. Milton's voice cut the night, and nested in the hearts, flowed through the veins and arteries, and at the end, exploded through the pores, making people dance and sing together, lighting up the night with thousands of little lights, made with matches and lighters. The tall benches got mixed up with the sky, and, for that night, Vienne had more stars. In London, where he performed for the first time, the expectation was immense. But nothing was different there. Although it rained on the night of the concert, the Odeon Hammersmith Theatre was packed. Backstage, before the show, Milton was hugged by Sting, who wished all kinds of success. And during the show, one thing consolidated his absolute success: right up front, in one of the first rows, Milton was applauded by one very special Englishman: Mick Jagger. In Spain, a lot of heat. In Barcelona, Madrid, Avila, Segovia, Valencia, Aviles... But the hottest warmth came from the heart of people. It was hot in the Mediterranean voice of Maria Del Mar Bonet, a Spanish singer from the region of Cataluña, successful for her beautiful voice and the strength of the songs sung. Songs that speak of simple and profound things: things of the life of the people from her motherland, things from the heart. She and Milton performed together. And Milton also presented, besides his band, the mineiro group Uakti. In Madrid, in the gardens of the Royal Palace, opened specially for that specific concert, another special appearance: Pat Metheny, who was in Rome, heard of Milton's concert and no sooner took a plane and brought his amazing guitar to the show. Applauses from everywhere. Deliriums, even from the public. Standing. Asking for more and storming through the Spanish night. Yet again the truth is confirmed "All artists must go where the people is" (Nascimento and Brant) MUITAS EXCURSÕES - MANY EXCURSIONS Milton's last excursion began here in Brazil, with concerts in São Paulo (Ibirapuera - 45 thousand people), Rio (inauguration of the Apoteose square, 80 thousand people) and Belo Horizonte (Mineirão Square - 130 thousand people). Coming from such a hit, the results overseas couldn't have been different: once again Brazilian Popular Music enchanted the world. Starting with New York, at the Carnegie Hall, where for the first time a Brazilian musician performed alone. For two nights, Carnegie Hall, jammed packed, saw the phenomenon The New York Times had spoken of in the front page of its weekend edition. During the midnight Saturday concert, one of the most traditional in New York, where the presence of artists is common, Milton Nascimento wrapped up with one of the longest ovations ever seen in the old Carnegie Hall. The stage, covered in American flowers set the tone of Brazilian success. On Sunday, again, the apotheosis and consecration of one of the most perfect artists in contemporary music, according to some American critics. With the repercussion and comments still very strong (he was interviewed by some of the most important newspapers and magazines in the US), Milton left for Quebec, as the first Brazilian personality to ever be officially invited to participate in the celebration of the 400th anniversary of that State. He was welcomed by the mayors of Quebec, Montreal and Lac Beauport, where he was given the medal for Cultural Merit. There Milton received several proposals to reside in Quebec. The next step was Europe, lovely Denmark who's always welcomed Milton so well. Caringly, he paid back with a song in honor of that country. In Copenhagen (every time he arrives, he is a guest of honor of captain Kay Sorensen in jaunts to Danish islands in the northern sea) Milton performed two concerts in the Montmartre, a holy shrine for Jazz, where great names from around the world perform. Wagner Tiso and his band opened the season. After Copenhagen, Milton set to find new markets: in Germany, which seemed cold and demanding. The Frankfurt Opera, where a new surprise came to be: a full house, and a lot of good vibes, in a concert transmitted by radio stations. Here too Milton climbs on stage many times, under warm applause. Vienna, birthplace of music, with its Blue Danube was the following concert. In the Franz Schubert room, where Gustav Mahler performed several of his pieces, Milton made ladies in furs and coats and frowning men dance and sing, in a concert aired live by the Vienna radio. Paris, a city open to the world, welcomed him for a concert in its newest concert room: Le Zenith, an acrylic gymnasium for 12 thousand people, where, in a show of light, Milton rekindled the magic ever present in his Parisian shows - this was his fifth season in Paris, having, in the eighties spent fifteen days in the Theatre de La Ville. Fatherly birthplace of our civilization, Spain was the following home. Official guest of the Minister for Culture, Milton showed in Spain, for the first time, his iberian voice and roots. A guest participant, in the year the Spanish government paid tribute to our Cuban brothers through the "Llegó La Salsa" project, Milton performed five times. The first one was in Barcelona, at the Plaza D'El Rey, where Isabel de Castela once receptioned Columbus, after the discovery of America. In this emotional and sensible concert, millions of people pressed together in the historical streets of the Gothic District, while Milton masterfully made his voice echo on the suffered and expensive walls of the Royal Palace, raising goosebumps on the crowd's skin. This show had its duration tripled by the general emotion. At some moments, five seagulls who inhabit the Palace flew over Milton and his magnetized audience. In Barcelona, he did yet one more presentation, for the Catalã TV. After the now anthological concert in Barcelona, Milton performed in Madrid, as an already known star in Spain, to a sold out Real Madrid gymnasium. In the Canary Islands, in Santa Cruz do Tenerife, Milton performed in the bulls' plaza, where, surprisingly, the local audience accompanied him dancing his songs. The last Spanish performance was in Alcalá de Henares, land of Cervantes and his Don Quixote de La Mancha. College town, and traditionally young, with its Cultural July, it prepared Milton's loving farewell. Rome and its Brazilian festival welcomed Milton Nascimento and his group in the Italic Foro for a concert outdoors, aired by both radio and television, with an audience of over seven thousand people in the artist's first performance in Italian ground. The repercussion of this show went on in several articles in Italian press. The Nice Festival, dedicated that year to Brazilian culture by initiative of Minister Jack Lang, had in its opening act a record of public in its fifteen years. Milton Nascimento's performance was watched by thousands of French, live, on by on the TV. During sixty five days of touring, in performances that consecrated him an artist of the world, Milton Nascimento showcased himself as a song, as a chant that came from the Sun country, carrying in his gigantic voice of mineiro calmness, the light of the stars, the joys of birds' dances that only children know how to keep. A SUCCESS WORLDWIDE, MILTON IS BRAZIL.

Event Details

Considered one of the icons of Brazilian Music, Milton Nascimento's unique voice was described in the New York Times as “an agonizingly pure tenor that often slips into an ethereal falsetto." His incomparable style blends a variety of musical invoices from European classical music to Brazilian Bossa Nova to African folk and British Pop.

Nacimiento’s international breakthrough came with his appearance on jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter's 1974 album Native Dancer, which led to widespread acclaim and collaborations with an array of American artists including Sting, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. Through his friendship with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, he came to work with the pop-rock band Duran Duran in 1993 and performed with the band in concert when they toured in Brazil. Nascimento earned a Grammy award for "Best World Music Album" in 1998 for his self-titled album and was nominated again in 1991 and 1995.

Live reviews

Milton Nascimento is a national treasure in Brazil. His music is a fabulous blend of jazz with Brazilian and Portuguese traditional styles that sounds absolutely delectable, as if Milton was aways destined to be on this Earth to create beautiful, beautiful music. He has a huge vocal range which he exploits to its full capabilities in his songs, with a tender falsetto that is heart-wrenchingly moving. He is a prolific composer, releasing over 40 albums. Highly regarded works include "Canção da América," "Bailes Da Vida" and "Travessia."

Seeing his performance of "Travessia" at Jazz Day in 2013 was an incredible experience. The sound he produced sounded as if there was a whole orchestra behind him, when in fact there was only a small group of accompanists. His full guitar sound just seemed so rich and textured, as if there were several string players behind him. Hs soulful voice swept throughout the concert hall, warming deeply the ears of the audience. It is such a romantically smooth song full of depth it is impossible not to be moved by his performance. He has had an illustrious career over many years yet he still appears to sound as fresh as he did when first starting out, with his music being timeless in its beauty. A fabulous talent that deserves to be appreciated more widely.

Milton Nascimento

About milton nascimento.

One Final Music Session second show added due to overwhelming sell out at Town Hall.

A true music icon, Milton Nascimento announces farewell to the stage and promises an epic concert to honor the fans. With a trajectory career that includes a 60-year career and eighty years of life, Milton Nascimento decided that the time has come to say goodbye to the stage. But for this cycle to be complete, the artist decided to pay one last tribute to the fans with an international tour that promises to be epic: “One Final Music Session”.

“I could never end this part of my life of so many years on the road without honoring those who have been with me all this time: the fans. And this tour was designed especially for you!” – explains Milton. After forty-three albums, five GRAMMY awards and an honorary doctorate from the Berklee School of Music, Milton is now preparing to sing his greatest hits on a tour that will pass through Brazil, Europe and the United States.

Composite image: Takeaway coffee cup with a fiver wrapped around it

The £5 coffee is coming – but should we swallow it?

A large takeaway flat white will already set you back £5.19 in London and other cities aren’t far behind. If cafe owners aren’t getting rich off our caffeine habit, who is?

I t was one of those London museum cafes where buggies block the entrance and children trail veggie straws across the floor. The queue of parents stretched to the door and the staff appeared frazzled. I ordered an iced oat milk latte. “That will be £4.50,” said the server. I remember the sensations that follow acutely.

Shock. How much? Regret. I don’t want it . Self-recrimination. Why didn’t I check the price ? Embarrassment. If I say I don’t want it, everyone will hear. Acceptance. I’ll pay for it, but I’m never ordering here again. I drank every sip of the coffee, waited for the ice to melt, and drank that, too. I was out of sorts for the rest of the day.

It wasn’t that I hadn’t noticed coffee getting more expensive. Prices had uniformly become £3-something – and £4-plus prices were not uncommon. But £4.50 stung because it was almost £5: a ludicrous sum, I thought, to pay for a takeaway coffee.

And yet the era of the £5 coffee is upon us. In London branches of Black Sheep Coffee, a nationwide chain, a large flat white is £5.19. Go into many London coffee shops, add an extra shot to your order, or non-dairy milk or ice, and you’ll easily pay upwards of £4.50 for your drink. Where the capital goes, the rest of the UK follows. “We’re two to three years away from £5 being routine for a standard coffee,” says Jeffrey Young, the CEO and founder of the Allegra Group, which analyses the sector. “Certainly, we’ll see it in the next five years, without any doubt.”

A perfect blend of factors means that having a coffee out is more expensive than ever. First, the beans. “We are in a situation of very low stocks in the US and Europe, exacerbated by the Red Sea being blocked ,” says Carlos Mera, head of the agri commodities markets team at Rabobank. “A lot of coffee comes from Vietnam to Europe and that now needs a much longer transit time.” Brazil and Vietnam, the world’s largest and second-largest producers of coffee, have experienced adverse weather. In 2021, Brazil had a major frost, while Vietnam is in the grip of a drought.

As a result, at the time of writing, robusta futures were trading at $4,178 per metric tonne, the highest ever price for the coffee beans that make up approximately 40% of the world’s consumption . Meanwhile, arabica futures prices have been higher only a handful of times in the past half century. “There is not much unsold coffee left in Vietnam,” says Mera. Prices may yet increase further before the end of the year, as European roasteries attempt to import beans before scheduled EU deforestation legislation . Coffee production is also likely to be severely affected by the climate crisis, with researchers suggesting that it might halve the area of land suitable for growing beans in coming decades.

But the beans are only a small fraction of the cost of a cup. Inflation in the UK began rising in earnest in early 2021, fuelled by the war in Ukraine, as well as the long tail of Brexit and Covid. It peaked at 11.1% in October 2022, a 41-year high, before falling; it now stands at 3.2% . Coffee shops – which use electricity and raw materials such as wheat, cocoa, milk and eggs, all vastly more expensive, and which were, pre-Brexit, often reliant on European labour – have been severely affected.

“Everything that could possibly have gone up, in terms of the base costs of a coffee shop, has gone up by around 20% in the last two years,” says Young. “Equipment has gone up. Labour costs have gone up substantially. Milk has gone up. Packaging has gone up. Electricity and utilities have gone up. Insurance has gone up.” Only commercial rents have remained relatively stagnant .

According to data from the Office for National Statistics , a cup of coffee purchased from a restaurant or cafe in March 2024 is 19% more expensive than two years previously. Consumers are adjusting their habits accordingly. “Our research shows that fewer people bought drinks in-store at coffee shops in October 2023 compared with the previous year: 83% versus 89% in October 2022,” says Trish Caddy of the research agency Mintel, although more people are buying takeaway coffees from kiosks and drive-throughs, which tend to be cheaper.

Paul Ashby holds a coffee cup in his very pleasant-looking cafe

“I don’t mind spending money, but I hate wasting it,” says Georgia Williams, 28, a partnerships manager from London. Williams recently spent £9.10 on two coffees from a local cafe. She only realised how much they had cost when she saw the Monzo notification on her phone. The coffees were delicious, but in future she’ll make them at home, using her moka pot. “Buying coffee out will be a special treat in the future,” she says.

It is this exact situation that Paul Ashby, 44, a coffee shop co-owner from Leighton Buzzard, fears. “If I raise my prices, hoping to get more revenue, am I shooting myself in the foot, because you’re not coming in as frequently?” he asks. We are meeting in one of the three coffee shops he co-owns, the Bogota Coffee Co , in central Milton Keynes. It is a warm and inviting wood-panelled space that serves single‑origin Colombian coffee. The week before I visit, Ashby put prices up by about 10%. A flat white has gone up from £3.20 to £3.50. “It’s a big jump,” he says, but unavoidable. His costs have gone up 17% in the past year.

“The coffee industry has been seen as recession-proof, because it’s so low-spend,” says Ashby. “But because that spend is getting higher, we can’t say it’s bulletproof any more. That’s the worry.”

Ashby places a coffee cup in front of me. On it, he has written out his costs for a £3.50 flat white. Seventy pence goes to VAT; 25p for corporation tax; 50p for rent; 35p for wages; 27p for coffee beans; 15p for milk; 15p for utilities; and 7p for the cup, lid and sleeve – leaving £1.06 profit. I visit on Monday, the quietest day of the week; in the hour I spend there, I estimate that 20 people buy coffees, equating to about £21 profit.

A barista makes latte art with the foam

“I do not want people to think I’m pleading poverty, because I’m not,” says Ashby. “But this is a lifestyle business. If you’re hoping to get rich out of it, you’re not going to.”

It’s easy for independent operators to get into a financial mess. “A one-off independent is often a passion project,” says Young. “They don’t have the cost controls a large-scale operator can put in place. They don’t have the marketing reach. They are not in the highest footfall locations, because landlords can’t take the risk. It’s very hard to make money.”

Despite not having the same economies of scale, independent coffee shops have to match or even undercut the major brands. “The chains set the price,” says Prof Jonathan Morris of the University of Hertfordshire, the author of Coffee: A Global History and the host of a podcast called A History of Coffee .

Many of the chains have put up prices by above inflation in recent years, sometimes by startling amounts. “Well-established brands with strong pricing power have been able to raise menu prices without losing market share, particularly among 16- to 34-year-olds who are willing to pay more for their favourite brands like Costa Coffee and Starbucks,” says Caddy.

According to data collected by the coffee retailer UCC, a medium latte in Buckinghamshire branches of Starbucks went up from £3.20 in January 2023 to £4.50 in January 2024 , a 40% increase. “The fact is, the independents don’t have the confidence to charge what they should be charging to have a commercial business,” says Young. “Whereas the likes of Costa, Starbucks and Nero are charging what they need to charge.”

The Bogota Coffee Co remains profitable because it has a well-established customer base, many of whom Ashby knows by name, and because he is on top of his costs. “We don’t waste anything,” he says. “We know exactly how much to put out on the counter every day. We know exactly how much milk to order.”

B ut even the most well-operated and beloved coffee shops can founder. “Until lockdown, we were all right. It was never going to be a business you can retire early on. But we were OK,” says Sharon Henderson, 44, from Kingswinford, near Dudley. Henderson opened the Red Cone Coffee House in Wordsley in 2013. She had previously owned, and sold, a successful coffee shop in Kinver. “I went in with knowledge and experience,” she says. The Red Cone was a charming, rustic cafe, known for its cakes in particular. “We baked everything in-house,” she says proudly, “in the tiniest kitchen you’ve ever seen.”

The Red Cone was within a heritage attraction. It relied on tour groups, which Covid decimated. Then came the cost of living crisis. Henderson’s electricity bill tripled overnight. A single egg went from 6p to 20p. “We couldn’t pass those increases on,” she says. “So we were always absorbing the costs.” She put up prices, but “there was a ceiling to what customers were prepared to pay”. To make matters worse, renovation work began at the heritage site and the scaffolding put off customers.

In January 2024, Henderson took the heartbreaking decision to close: “I tried to be very dispassionate and unemotional about it, which I didn’t succeed in, because I cried in the bath . ” She felt “like a failure. It’s soul-destroying.” Having to tell her staff they no longer had jobs, she says, was horrendous. “They were all wonderful. They knew, because I never kept it secret, that I had done everything I could. But that was the worst thing,” she says.

The British have an enduring love affair with coffee, dating back to the 1650s, when coffee houses arrived in England. “They spread very rapidly and became important spaces for socialising,” says Morris. But coffee houses disappeared in the late 18th century, being replaced by pubs or private clubs. There was a limited revival with Italian-style coffee bars in the 1950s , but it wasn’t until the 1990s that coffee shops took off once again in the UK, led by chains such as Starbucks. Throughout the 2000s, independents pioneered Australian-influenced drinks such as the flat white, and began procuring specialty beans.

According to the Allegra Group, there are now more than 22,000 coffee shops in the UK. “We are making a better product,” says Young. “Customers are getting a pretty good deal.”

But sometimes the experience falls short. Sullen staff, cold coffee, dirty tables. (This is Ashby’s pet peeve. “You go to sit down and it’s a sticky table,” he groans. “It’s the worst!”) When this happens, particularly if your drink is expensive, it transforms a restorative ritual into a frustrating experience. It is likely that outlets like these will be winnowed, as price rises force customers to think carefully about where they spend their money.

“Independent places sometimes take their foot off the gas,” says Ashby. “Are customers still having a good experience? Are you taking them for granted?” Independents cannot survive without their regulars. He points out a woman by the till. “She comes every day,” he says. “She’s a really good customer. If we were to upset her, it would be really difficult to replace that revenue.”

Close-up of a woman paying with a Bank of England five pound note, the first English note made of polymer plastic.

Larger chains can afford unhappy customers, as attrition is priced in. “As I was leaving, I thought: have I just been conned?” Nick Green, 50, lives in Ipswich and works for a bank. He has just paid £5.19 for a large flat white at Black Sheep Coffee in the City of London. Green placed the order on a touchscreen menu during the lunchtime rush. “I looked at the price and thought: is that right? ” he says. “But there was a queue of people behind me. I didn’t want to look like an idiot and back out.”

The issue, for Green, wasn’t the cost. “It’s a value thing,” he says. “I wasn’t waited on. I didn’t get a china cup with a little biscuit on it. I got a plastic cup with a lid. I couldn’t see if there was latte art or not. I did the work myself. I ordered it and queued for it and left.”

The best coffee shops are also about atmosphere: the hiss of the milk steamer, the conversation drifting from other tables. “You don’t go to a coffee shop to buy coffee,” says Morris. “You go to the coffee shop to buy the experience of being in a coffee shop.”

When all that is stripped away, even the creamiest latte will leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Consumers don’t tend to complain – they simply never come back. “You literally and figuratively swallow it,” says Green.

Done well, coffee shops are vital community spaces, where for a few pounds mums with prams and pensioners and office workers can meet and talk. “It’s a hospitality venue,” says Ashby, as the milk delivery man arrives and leaves with a free coffee and a cheery wave. “It’s not a coffee shop, really. It’s about coming in and feeling welcomed. About having a nice place to go.”

The £5 coffee is coming – perhaps not today, but soon enough – and when it arrives, coffee shops may not seem like extensions of our living rooms, but more rarefied spaces, like restaurants or bars. “Customers are not ready to pay £5 daily for a regular coffee,” says Young. If they do balk, more well‑loved independents like the Red Cone will falter.

“If we don’t support independent businesses, they will be gone,” warns Henderson. “We are open to the elements. We are on our own.” She now works as a baker. “It’s tough out there, and this time my business didn’t survive,” she says. “Would I do it again? I don’t know.”

Coffee shops disappeared once before from UK shores. In an era of capsules, sachets and worktop espresso machines, with high-quality coffee easier than ever to make at home, whether the neighbourhood coffee shop will survive the dawn of the £5 coffee remains to be seen.

“Coffee’s always been an affordable luxury,” Ashby says. “You don’t really think about it. Whereas now you are thinking about it. And that is the problem.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
