Moonlight Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Let the full moon illuminate your path as you paddle along mangrove shores and shallow waters of the Merritt Island National Wildlife refuge. This tour features a healthy balance of every nighttime feature available. As the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, thousands of species of birds and animals make their home that we are privileged to respectfully visit. In the summer months, glimmers of bioluminescence, “dino bio,” can often be observed in the shadowy shorelines of nearby mazes and canals, creating blue swirls of light on your paddle and in your hands. In the cooler months, harmless Comb Jellies can also be found in the nooks and crannies of the lagoon, pulsating their blue-green down rows of their bodies, and striking a rainbow-y pose when put under your flashlight!

With rocket launch pads and NASA in view, we take you on an informative paddle, often crossing paths with jumping schools of mullet fish, curious dolphins, and sometimes a sleeping manatee for an unforgettable encounter with nature. After an especially star-studded tour, patrons often say, “Just looking at the night sky was my favorite part! The stars stole the show!”  We invite you to come explore the calming waters of the only wildlife refuge nestled in the shadow of Kennedy Space Center, and decide for yourself which of the elements most excites you.

Experience a Sunset and Moonrise Over Myrtle Beach

Spend the late afternoon and twilight with us on this beautiful moonlight Myrtle Beach kayak tour, complete with a jetty walk, paddling, and wildlife sightings.

We launch late in the day and paddle out near the jetty in daylight. A nice beach stroll takes us out to the jetty, with great birding and wildlife watching along the way. At the jetty, we watch the full moon rise over the ocean, then turn and watch the sun set over the mainland.

We return to the kayaks, put lights on each boat, and paddle back by the light of the moon. The kayaks look like floating lanterns in the marsh, and the moon glistens off the water.

Book early as this full moon kayak tour in Murrells Inlet is one of our more popular tours and we get a lot of repeat customers! Select your tour online.

This tour begins near Murrells Inlet, SC. Please review your confirmation email for the exact meeting location.

What is it about the pull of a full moon?   Everything reacts.  The tides, wildlife, us.

If you see a big moon rising in the sky, you’ll become transfixed, whether you’re looking at out of your car window or from a back porch.  And that’s what makes our monthly full moon paddles one of the best things we offer.

Departing from our Isle of Palms Outpost, this excursion begins before sunset when we prepare you for your adventure, fitting you to the gear and teaching you how to sea kayak.   Once on the water, we’ll paddle out to see the sun set and moon rise over the horizon from the best vantage point.

As the salt marsh settles in for the day’s end, you watch flocks of native birds go to roost and notice the estuary becoming more quiet. We’ll paddle under the silvery moonlight before using it to lead us back to the dock.

Whether it’s your first time paddling or you’re an experienced, paddler, you’ll leave this tour with memories of time well spent.  And maybe you’ll feel a little different after being pulled by the moon.

NOTE: Tandems are REQUIRED for this tour. If your group has an odd number, please denote in the booking the approximate height and weight of the individual needing a single kayak.

Florida Rambler

Kayak under a full moon

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: March 14, 2024

Night-time can be a peaceful or romantic time to kayak. Many parks and outfitters offer full-moon kayaking and canoe trips. Some encourage participants to bring a bottle of wine; others end the night with a campfire and s’mores.

A twist on night kayaking is bioluminescent kayaking, where you paddle on the darkest nights (when there isn’t a full-moon) in order to see creatures that are like underwater lightning bugs. Here’s a Florida Rambler story on bioluminescent kayaking.

Outfitters generally choose a Saturday night closest to the full moon for their night-time kayak trips.

On the Indian River Lagoon, an outfitter offers moonlight kayak tours regularly. In the summer, if you paddle on a truly dark night, you can experience b ioluminescence — when creatures in the water glow like underwater lightning bugs. Near Tallahassee , long-time outfitters T-N-T Hide-A-Way offers full-moon tours on the Wakullah . It’s a leisurely one-way downstream paddle with a shuttle.

Note: Many other kayak and canoe outfitters all over the state offer full-moon kayaking, so check with your local outfitter or park. Most, but not all, require you to rent canoes or kayaks from them for the trips. Each outfitter is different, so call ahead. Most require advance registration and these trips do fill up during winter

Most night kayaking activities take place on weekends closest to the full moons. Be sure to call ahead to make reservations.

And let us know about full-moon kayaking events that aren’t listed here so we can update our listings and share them with others.

BIOLUMINESCENCE & FULL MOON NIGHT KAYAK TOUR

Quick Details

  • Hour Glass Duration: 1.5 Hours
  • User Ages: All Ages

EXPERIENCE OUTER BANKS BIOLUMINESCENCE

Outer Banks Kayak Adventures is excited to offer Bioluminescence and Full Moon Kayak Tours again this season!  Join us for either a full moon tour or a bioluminescence tour, depending on when you book and where the moon is within its cycle. Whether you visit during a dark night and see the bioluminescence at its brightest or schedule your tour during a full moon to see a sky full of stars, you’re sure to feel the magic of this incredible natural location.

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon where organisms produce light through a chemical reaction. Our nighttime kayak tours allow you to experience the Outer Banks’ bioluminescence in the water.

This tour will start just after sunset, so we’ll begin kayaking in the twilight. Once it gets completely dark, you’ll be able to see the glowing organisms in the water. On clear and magical nights, we sometimes get to see shooting stars. This nighttime excursion is a bucket list kayak tour for sure!

When there’s a full moon, seeing the bioluminescence gets a little tricky. To see bioluminescence, we need it to be dark. Therefore, when there’s a full moon, we may not see the bioluminescence. But when this happens, we get to kayak under a beautiful star-filled sky and a bright and beautiful moon. So, if the thought of kayaking amongst the stars interests you, you’ll want to choose a date when the moon is at its peak. Every once in a while, mother nature gives us the gift of both. You get to see the bioluminescence as well as see the full moon rise. We try to time it just right on these days so you get the best of both experiences.

Our Full Moon & Bioluminescence kayak tours are fun for most families but unsuitable for young children and beginners. We kayak later at night and in complete darkness. In fairness to the other kayakers, crying children and people that are unable to stay with the group should not sign up for this experience. If you are over 275 lbs and/or unable to manage your weight/balance DO NOT book this tour. Please consider the limits of your abilities when booking.

The start time will change throughout the season, so if you make your reservation more than a month in advance, please check your email a day before your tour for your updated start time. *Please note: Our kayak tours are subject to weather-related changes, as with all outdoor activities. We recommend making reservations early on in your vacation to move your tour to another date if needed. This is a warm-weather tour that we typically schedule from mid-May through mid-September. Weather, wind, and water conditions are determining factors.

What to know when booking?

  • We require children 12 and under paddle tandem (double) kayak with an adult.

What to bring?

  • Plenty of water and a snack if you’d like
  • A towel for after the tour (you’ll want to have it in your car)
  • Shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting wet
  • Apply insect repellent and bring a rain jacket if it might rain.

Please Note

This tour requires a minimum of THREE ADULTS to run , if we’ve not received enough bookings at the time you’ve requested, we will contact you to reschedule or refund your booking costs.

  • Chevron down Additional Information & Requirements

Outer Banks Kayak Adventures provides the best kayaking experience on the OBX. We use American-made Perception Kayaks which are known for being extremely versatile, making them the top choice for beginner and intermediate paddlers. If you are not very experienced with kayaking and SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) fear not! Before each of our tours, Outer Banks Kayak Adventures provides a paddle lesson on land, ensuring that you and your group have the experience they need before paddling.

There are NO shoe or clothing requirements. Along with kayaks, Outer Banks Kayak Adventures provides the paddles and life jackets. We offer single and tandem (double) kayaks and we use sit on top style hybrid kayaks, making it easy for you to get in and out. Please be sure to select the number of tandem (double) kayaks you’d like for your tour when making the online reservation.

  • Chevron down Cancellation Policy

The Fine Print:  All cancellations must be at least 48 hours before your scheduled tour for a refund. We paddle in the rain and the wind but not during thunderstorms. If we must cancel due to inclement weather, we will reschedule your tour or issue a refund. If you choose to reschedule and you don’t attend the tour for any reason without giving us notice before 48 hours of your tour, you will not receive a refund. You are expected to arrive at the correct tour location 15 minutes before the tour’s start time (we will send location details in your confirmation email). Late arrivals and no-shows will not be issued a refund.  If you choose to cancel for any reason within 48 hours, there is no refund.

Moonlight Paddle – Sea Kayak Tour

Quick Details

  • Hour Glass Duration: 2 Hours
  • Map Marker Location: Portland, Maine
  • User Ages: Ages 12+
  • Info No. of Participants: Max of 8 People

Join us for a full moon kayaking trip in Maine!

The silence and darkness that envelopes Casco Bay at night can be incredibly peaceful. But there’s also plenty to look at: The stars overhead, the sparkling bioluminescence in the waters below and the flickering lights of the Portland skyline. We’ll hit the water just in time to watch the sun set and then we’ll glide through the dark waters, keeping track of each other with the help of glow sticks dangling from our lifejackets.

  • Chevron down Children

Children age 12 to 15 are welcome on this tour if they paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult. If you would like to go paddling with a child under age 12 please consider our Family Tour.

  • Chevron down Parking

There is free all-day parking in the lot halfway down the hill on Cutter Street about 50 yards from Portland Paddle. When that lot is full you can find free parking on streets in the residential neighborhoods nearby. The parking spaces right beside Portland Paddle are limited to 5 minutes or two hours and some are reserved for vehicles with boat trailers.

  • Chevron down Bathrooms

There are public bathrooms and changing rooms that are open during limited hours. We have our own private portable toilet for customers. Most of the islands we visit do not have bathroom facilities, so it’s best to use the facilities before heading onto the water.

  • Chevron down Tandem Vs. Solo

We typically use tandem (two-person) sea kayaks on our shorter tours, but you may request a solo kayak if you have previous experience using one. Please reply to your confirmation email with this request. We try to accommodate everyone’s preferences, but ultimately your guide will make the final decision based primarily on safety considerations. We find that tandems are best for most people because they are more stable and spacious. Plus, if you get tired, your partner can pick up the slack! If you are joining a tour on your own, you will either be given a solo kayak or paired up with another person in the group.

  • Chevron down What to Wear

It’s often cooler on the water than on land, so bring a warm layer even if it is a warm day. Sometimes we get slightly wet from sea spray or from water dripping off the paddles. Cotton will not keep you warm if it gets wet, so it’s best to leave the blue jeans and t-shirts at home and wear fleece, nylon, wool or other non-cotton materials.

  • Chevron down Footwear

You may need to briefly step in shallow while getting in and out of your kayak, so you should wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Water shoes, sandals and old sneakers are good options.

  • Chevron down Tipping

We encourage you to offer a gratuity to your guide if you are satisfied with your experience. Tips are never expected, but always appreciated. A common tip on our day tours is $5-$10 per person. Tips can be given directly to the guide (cash or Venmo) or online via the follow-up email you’ll receive.

After our meal we continue our tour upstream, under the Bolte Bridge, embracing the city skyline as the day transitions into night. Kayaking through to Melbourne’s lively downtown, past Melbourne’s Tallship Polly woodside, Crown Casino and alongside stylish Southbank with stunning riverside and floating bars and restaurants. We continue past Flinders Street Railway Station and beneath historic Princes Bridge before arriving at the approach to Melbourne’s sporting precinct.
