Review: Cabela's 50th Winchester Model 70 Featherweight
Cabela's is offering special versions of the venerable Winchester Model 70 gun to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Available in the Winchester Model 70 Sporter, Super Grade Featherweight and Safari, only 750 of the Sporter, 500 of the Featherweight and 400 of the Safari Grade will be produced. The gun I tested is the Featherweight, chambered for the .270 Winchester.
From one end to the other, this Cabela's Model 70 certainly pays tribute to the history of the original Winchester rifle. The stock is beautifully executed in a typical classic styled stock that fits my average frame perfectly. The comb is straight, and when placed on my shoulder to shoot, my eye lines up perfectly with the center of the reticle on the scope.
Finished in oil, the stock on these guns is nothing less than Grade V, and mine shows a nice sample of feathering starting from the comb and working its way down to the toe of the stock. On the other side of the stock, the figuring is a bit more pronounced, includes the customary shadow-line cheekpiece. There are no pin knots — certainly the mark of a true high-grade piece of wood — and the inletting is so close you would think the gun was poured into this walnut stock.
The fore-end features an ebony tip cut at the preferred 90 degrees, and the checkering on both the fore-end and the pistol grip is cut in a traditional point pattern, with no overruns or glitches of any kind. The pattern wraps completely around the fore-end, and the pistol grip checkering finishes off with an impressive flair toward the rear of the gun. The buttstock sports a "Winchester red" Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad with black spacer.
The receiver and related metal parts follows the old lines as much as possible. The barrel is 22 inches long, free-floated and finished off with a custom crowned muzzle. All of the metalwork — barrel, receiver, floorplate and trigger guard — is polished bright and then finished in a luxurious blue. There is a step between the receiver and barrel, typical of the vintage Featherweight rifles made during that era.
The controlled-round-feed bolt includes the trusty claw extractor, with twin lugs providing the lockup. On the Cabela's gun, the bolt is finished bright, jeweled and stamped with the last four digits of the guns serial number.
The bolt is swept rearward and includes a band of machine checkering, and of course it has the three-position wing safety. To remove the bolt, push the small lever on the left side of the receiver down, and withdraw the bolt for cleaning or travel.

The gun is equipped with an adjustable trigger, and right out of the box mine broke consistently at 4¼ pounds with no slack before the sear let go. The trigger face is nicely contoured, which aids in controlling the trigger even with gloves on.
Special editions come with special touches. The rifle has a beautifully engraved floorplate trimmed in gold and a tastefully executed gold Cabela's 50th Anniversary logo. The floorplate is also engraved with "1 of 500" for the Featherweight, and all guns come with an accurately produced 1961-era box, owner's manual and hang tag.

The .270 Winchester is of course a natural chambering for this gun — one of Jack O'Connor's favorites, especially in the Model 70. My sample came with a Cabela's Alaska Guide 3-10x40mm scope in a matte finish. Another option would be the Leupold scope made for this occasion made in a limited quantity of 500 scopes. If this were my gun, I'd opt for a glossy rather than a matte finish to bring out the full beauty of this rifle.
At the range, at 100 yards, the gun handled like a dream. Feeding was smooth and uneventful with a wide range of brands and bullet designs. Ejection was positive, especially if I put my heart in pulling back the bolt; spent cartridges ejected at least four to five feet to the right. Like other .270 Winchester guns in my collection, the 130-grain bullet weight always seems to do the best.
In short, regardless of whether this gun has the Cabela's mark on it — which does make it more desirable and collectable — the Winchester Model 70 is still the "rifleman's rifle."

Cabela's African Adventures
Cabela's African Adventures is a 2013 third-person hunting/adventure game developed by Fun Labs. Set in an unspecified African country, the story follows big-game hunter John Mason as he is tasked by a man named George to retrieve pieces of an idol that was believed to have been stolen from the local tribe in a dispute from a rival. The idol was then broken up, and the pieces hidden in the territory of the region's most aggressive animals. The game was later re-released on the Xbox One and PS4 in 2015. Despite the exclusively African setting, the game is unrelated to the earlier Cabela's African Safari .
The following guns are seen in the video game Cabela's African Adventures :
- 1 Searcy Double-Barreled Rifle
- 2 Unknown Bolt-Action Rifles
- 3 Remington 870 Express
- 4 Double-Barreled Shotgun
- 5 Webley Mk. VI
Searcy Double-Barreled Rifle
The Searcy Double-Barreled Rifle appears in the game as the "Break-Action Rifle" and is available in two variants, one chambered in .458 and the other in .700 Nitro Express.

Two bolt-action rifles appear in the game as the "Bolt-Action Rifle .500" and the "Bolt-Action Rifle .375" respectively. The rifles' scopes are able to be toggled on and off.
Remington 870 Express
The Remington 870 Express appears in the game as the "Pump-Action Shotgun 12 GA".
Double-Barreled Shotgun
A Double-Barreled Shotgun appears in the game as the "Break-Action Shotgun 12 GA".
Webley Mk. VI
George retrieves a Webley Mk VI out of a drawer, but is knocked unconcious by John Mason.

Safari (always ready) Rifle Sling

Has anyone ever used the Safari Rifle Sling? A couple of years ago I was hunting elk in my native Montana when I heard a rifle shot just over a ridge from me. I hadn’t been seeing any elk or even any sign of elk in that area, which normally held significant numbers. My son and I had seen three mountain lions (A.K.A.: puma, cougar, catamount) leaving their mule deer kill site a few days prior to that morning and lion tracks were in the snow all around the area. I was already blaming the cats for routing the elk population from that favorite elk hunting spot of mine. After hearing that shot I was discouraged, thinking that a deer hunter had probably just driven any remaining elk out of the area. So, I immediately headed for my rig, determined to hunt somewhere else for the rest of the season. A couple of hours later, while I was packing up my truck, an acquaintance stopped by and asked how hunting was going. I told him that I was discouraged by all the lion sign and sightings. “Was that you that shot?”, I asked. He said, “Yeah. I just shot a lion in self-defense!” He was waiting for the game warden to come so he could show him the unauthorized kill. He explained that he was walking through some brush and walked right up on a mountain lion on a fresh deer kill. The lion immediately crouched and was clearly ready to pounce on him to defend its kill. The animal was so close all he could do was point his rifle and fire. (The game warden saw no reason to question his story, so it was a ruled an unavoidable, self-defense kill.) I asked him what would have happened if his rifle had been slung on his back. He turned out to be one of those hunters who do not use rifle slings, because they don’t want to be tempted to put their rifles on their backs. For most, it is probably more a desire to not miss a quick shot opportunity on game, so they carry their rifles at the ready without a sling. For this particular hunter, avoidance of a traditionally shouldered rifle now carries a deeper significance. I stopped putting my rifle on my back many years ago when I discovered the Safari Rifle Sling in a sporting goods store. I have them on all of my big game rifles and haven’t used a traditional sling since. I am not in the business of selling Safari Rifle Slings. In fact, I have a little trouble finding them myself, without an Internet search. After checking the Internet just now I only see one place to buy them: Cabela’s. There are several other rifle slings that are called “safari” slings, but they are all traditional slings. I understand how important tradition is, but I just can’t see why the vast majority of hunters prefer to have a gun slung over one shoulder on their backs. I never mastered a fast technique of swinging a shoulder-slung rifle into a ready position. I guess I’m in good company, because the military uses designs similar to the Safari Rifle Sling. You can see a photo of my youngest son using a Safari Rifle Sling on my website home page: Elk Hunting: Practical Elk Hunting Tips for the Realistic Hunter . This sling is always at the ready and does not require constant hands-on attention to keep it in place. It might swing back and forth a little while walking, so a light hand keeps it steady. The sling is designed so that the length can be quickly and easily adjusted without removing the sling from the shoulders. I would think that more hunters would want this type of “at the ready” sling when hunting dangerous African game. Not to mention the advantage of the increased comfort of having the weight of the rifle spread across a larger area of the shoulders. This type of sling has the option of also slinging the rifle over your back, but I never find a reason for doing that. I like the at-ready convenience and comfort it provides, as well as the safety factor, in case of a bear or mountain lion attack. So, what do you guys think? Why is this type of sling not used more? Or, is it and I just don't know it?

I never seen that kind of sling before or a gun ever carried like that before! It looks interesting and I can see your point of view especially hunting dangerous game. I know Ive been one of the traditionalists who carry their gun on their back and probably will do so around home here in Wisconsin chasing deer, But I'm very apt to buy one on my next trip to Cabela's & try it, It definitely makes sense for Africa especially when you don't know what's lurking around the next corner!!
Well I have used a sling like the Safari Sling and they are very handy when still hunting. They are not really all that new either, as I remember seeing a similar product close to 30 years ago. As for dangerous game...........for follow up after a shot I will never have a sling of any type on my rifle.....not even a safari sling. I do not want anything that can get caught up on brush or me for that matter. While I have not waded in after wounded lions or leopards yet, I have gone in after wounded grizzlies and black bears dozens of times. If you have ever gone after a wounded bear in tag alders or thick hazelnut brush, dwarf birch or the like you would know why no sling and no scope are the norm. I have followed up on buffalo in the thick thornbrush in Zimbabwe where you could not see more than 15 or 20 yards. You do not want anything that could hangup.......heck even your clothes can potentially be a problem at times.
I have no sling on my rifles. Just my personal preference.
I guess I would have to try it out. I know my PH didn't like me slinging my rifle on my back, but I told him I hunted that way for 20 plus years and I have never had a problem. I still do it my way and believe I because it is familiar to me and I'm no rookie...let the issue die. I agree with Skyline..if I'm getting up on something wounded the gun if in both arms and I never let my guard down. I started carrying my gun on my shoulder when I was driving deer at 12 years old and we go through the thickest of swamps...if the gun starts catching to much I carry it in both hands.

I was taught still hunting also, but, my grandfather (who taught me) never used a sling and thus , nore do I. After seeing a few pics of safari hunts 20+ yrs ago and grand paws technique I guess I just have never had the need for one. Then again, enysee, once I hit the remote mountain areas of Alaska for my first brown, I am taking one of my old military leather slings, just in case.
Bert the Turtle
I learned to use an old school military shooting sling at Thunder Ranch. We were not just taught position shooting, but also how to sling the weapon and how to get safely and efficiently from a slung to shooting position. I must have been a slow learner because I spent hours of my free time working on it. It takes about a second, and certainly well under two seconds from the slowest position. It does take a bit of instruction and a lot of practice, but it is not slow. Now, were I actively in pursuit of something dangerous, I would have the rifle in my hands, and the sling off if given the opportunity. It is faster to have the rifle at the ready and slings can hang up on stuff. While it is uncommon to use a shooting sling, I do use one, and do use one in the field if I can. The last was on oryx in Namibia. He was slowly working his way across and any shot was obscured by brush. I hid beside some brush and took a good slung kneeling position with a natural point of aim down an open area that he would eventually cross. When he did, it was a good clean, steady shot. So I like to have the option of a real shooting sling. I do think proper instruction is critical to efficiently using one's weapons, and highly advocate spending money on high quality training. I've been to Thunder Ranch and **NOT**PERMITTED**, as well as several classes with Louis Awerbuck. I've never failed to learn something new.

Hunt Moose with a Safari Sling I have seen the Safari Sling in use over many years. Although I have never used one myself (I am a shoulder, or no sling carrier) I can see the advantage as well as the disadvantages of them. One day I would like to try them out on a moose hunt. I hunt moose in British Columbia Canada and have taken many over the past 25 or so years with both a rifle and a bow. The typical moose hunting rifle would be well suited to one of these slings. Moose are hunted in more open areas than that of the thick brush you may find in Africa, I don't believe the sling would create much of a snagging problem. I guess I'll have to get one to see just how good (or not) they would work. Has anyone ever used one of the Safari Slings on a moose hunt?

We put a Safari Sling like you mentioned on my wife's .243 and she likes it. However I found it a bit unwieldy walking through woods with the rifle facing outward. Also for me, the sling got in the way of the scope or would not slip off the stock sometimes when shouldering the rifle. Maybe it was due to the brand of Safari Sling we have. For our Africa trip I took the Safari Ching Sling for our 30-06 and the Vero Vellini Double Sling for my Blaser .375 H&H. I did not regret either decision. We could have used a Safari sling but didn't due to the fact my wife and I were sharing the 30-06 and for reasons I mentioned above.
Bert - I agree. I use the Military sling in service rifle competition. I can't say I ever used the classic military sling hunting - for me there's never been enough time to sling-in and sling-out. But I have used my slings as a "hasty" sling many many times to good effect. I once used the Safari Ching sling we have that way and it worked out.

The Safari Sling in RealTree Edge has just been released and available for immediate shipping!!!
Equally important, this patented design lets you carry your rifle hand-free in three different positions:
- Out in front of your body, in the right-side-up position.
- Over your shoulder, in the traditional hiking position.
- Across your back, and out of your way.
The 2″ wide webbing is soft and comfortable, yet remarkably rugged. And, it does a superior job of spreading weight evenly which lessens strain and fatigue. (The sling itself only weighs four ounces.)
Safari Sling installs easily on most rifles and shotguns. And, the patented heavy nylon loops fit 1″ and 1-1/4″ standard swivels.
If you’re inclined to cover a lot of ground while hunting, remember that the Safari Sling works great with backpacks.
The Safari Sling comes in two versions:
- The BP-2 fits rifles and shotguns with 1″ or 1-1/4″ sling swivels front and rear.
- The BP-6 fits most shotguns without factory swivels and includes a rear swivel and stud. For regular buttstocks only.

I have several Safari Slings and have used them for well over a decade. I no longer use any other sling because the Safari Sling makes them all obsolete. A brilliant hands-free option for carrying your rifle.
Coleson Warrington – March 24, 2021
Absolutely the best sling you can buy. Stop looking and buy a pair while you’re here! Works for big game, or even bird hunting if you like to cover serious country like us chukar hunters! Coleson in Idaho

I have at least 6, have been using them for over 10yrs and can’t see ever using a traditional sling again. Wanting a couple more rifles and will be getting some for them, I know they swap easy but I like them on ea gun and will likely get a pink one for my daughter.
Clermont Savoie – August 2, 2018
Absolutey the best designed sling I have ever used. Rifle is always at ready, well protected and one “never” has to retrieve from behind the shoulder.
Dave Sambar Deer Hunter Australia – June 15, 2016
I don’t write many reviews but for superb, best in class gear you just have to. I have used this sling for 4 years and hunt a deer that will only give you a maximum of 3 seconds to take a shot or lose the opportunity. It’s outstanding for that purpose, uninterrupted fast shouldering of your rifle, always ready to go. Even with a pack on and wearing a chest bino holder.
I hunt steep, wet, thick country and can’t tell you how many times I have slipped and used my hands free of the rifle to stabilise myself without any concern for safety as it is almost imposible for the rifle to point at your head or chest area. Hiking, riding a quad or motorbike is all easily done with no issues once the sling is adjusted exactly for you. It is worth taking the time to get the rifle tilt angle off your body exactly right for you and length right as well, then you can easily walk, ride or whatever hands free.
It does have one fault of which I have solved; it will chafe against your neck, I found if you buy a seat belt shoulder protector it will fit perfectly and the sling slides through the protector as it sits against your neck making you not ever notice it’s even sliding through it. Just superb !!
Glenn S. – November 16, 2014
Without question, the best way to go and I’ve used these for several years now and previously had 35 years experience trying to use other “traditional” types of slings. Don’t even consider anything else.
Rick – February 24, 2014
I love it. I’m gonna use it on all my guns.
dewey mahoney – January 21, 2013
best sling ever!!! i have hunted florida to canada, and out west, won’t wear you out on long hikes, and your ready to shoot when needed, have bought one for all my hunting buddys, it’s improved all of our hunting, works good as a deer drag. yes!!!
T Mur – January 19, 2013
Thank goodness I was able to find it again. I had got these in Canada years ago at a hunting show, then we lost them. Do yourself a favor, go ahead and buy yourself some, you will not be disappointed.
H. James Topping – March 3, 2012
Just sent a check for my seventh (7) Safari Sling. I won’t hunt with any other type of sling. I am so pleased with the way this sling has performed for me and my son (my hunting partner). Thank you.
Jim Ahrens – July 23, 2010
Absolutey the best designed sling I have ever used. Rifle is always at ready, well protected and one “never” has to retrieve from behind the shoulder. Will not go the hunt without it!
