Wild Morocco organises tailor-made Morocco tours and activity holidays, specialising in Sahara Desert experiences.

Wild Morocco is a registered Amazigh-Anglo operator organising private tailor-made Morocco tours and activity holidays in Morocco, including photography holidays. We specialise in the Sahara Desert, connecting you with nature through desert hiking and camping in Morocco’s unique outdoors. Read about our purpose-driven travel goals below.

Discover our best-selling Morocco tours in the Sahara Desert with a range of guided 4×4 trips starting from Marrakech, the North or the Coast (or optional self-drive packages on demand). Experience the Sahara in as little as 3 or 4 days excursion. We offer the chance to hike or camel trek  in the Iriqui National Park, with wilderness camps in the seclusion of isolated dunes. Enjoy a variety of  desert camping   options in Morocco, at the Erg Chigaga dunes and the Erg Chebbi dunes; from glamping sites, or en-suite tents, to mobile wilderness camps that will truly take you off-grid.

Whatever your interest or your reason to explore Morocco, please take inspiration for your Morocco tours from our site and get in touch.

Moroccan-pattern-02

Our aim on our Morocco tours is to take you away from the crowds and provide you with the ultimate desert safari. We offer small desert camps in the Moroccan Sahara and the location of the camps is key.

Camp Al Koutban

Camp-Al-Koutban

The Berber desert camp ‘Camp Al Koutban’ is at the base of the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, the longest ‘erg’ (sand sea) in Morocco, and off the beaten path. The Camp Al Koutban is encircled by smaller, rolling dunes for privacy which offer a great vantage point for sunset and sunrise.

Nomadic Camping

morocco nature tours

A private, wild encampment in the Erg Sedrar dunes, to the east of Erg Chigaga great dunes. Two hours off-road drive from civilisation. The stay at the camp can be combined with a bespoke self-drive adventure in Morocco or with a tailor-made tour.

Deluxe Camp

Camping-Erg-Chigaga

One of the finest tented accommodations in Morocco’s Sahara Desert, the desert camp offers pure luxury at every level but retains the spirit of the culture of the Sahara Desert, given it is run exclusively by a Berber team who all originate from the area.

Travel With Purpose

Our team are the last generation to have grown up as children in the desert, previously practising a way of life that was unchanged in centuries. Our parents kept farms and livestock in the desert when water was freely available. That way of life became untenable more than three decades ago when the river to this region (Draa) was dammed near its source and the desert encroached on farmland.

Our responsible travel goals, purpose-driven, aim to support a very poor region of Morocco, educate visitors on the nomadic way of life, and care for our very fragile desert environment.

Moroccan-man-cooking-outdoors

  • Environment

Tourism is the mainstay in this region of Morocco. Young people normally have to move away from the local village (Mhamid El Ghizlane) to find work elsewhere.

However, we aim to put local knowledge and skills to work locally through employing local guides, local cooks, local camel-handlers and local drivers. Young men who are often the main breadwinners of their extended families will be the source of funding all living costs for 3 generations of their families.

Employing local men ensures that they in turn benefit their own community by contributing money there.

  • We pay fair wages and garner loyalty from our team through fair and equal treatment.
  • We buy all of our food from local shopkeepers. Fruit and vegetables are seasonal only.
  • We donate to animal welfare charities.
  • We aim to care for our very fragile environment and show visitors the beauty of the desert wilderness.
  • Having grown up in this region of the desert we are acutely aware of the scarcity of water.
  • We only transport enough water on our desert hikes for food preparation and hand-washing. We do not transport water for ‘showering’ which is non essential for responsible travel.  We don’t encourage desert hiking trips longer than 6 days, again to conserve water.
  • We customise desert hiking on a private basis, and certainly for group sizes no larger than 16. Most of our hiking trips are arranged for couples and individuals who want peace and quiet.
  • We encourage our visitors to collect litter whenever they find it in the desert, as we instruct our local guides and camel-handlers to do so.
  • We ask that our visitors take their litter out of the desert with them or hand it over to their guide who will bring it out of the desert.
  • We do not encourage the rental of quad biking which is harmful to the environment.
  • We offer our visitors information on the flora and fauna of the desert environment in the Iriqui National Park before they visit the region.
  • We encourage our visitors to travel by public bus to the desert frontier.   ctma.ma
  • We encourage our visitors to visit Jarjeer Mules and/or SPANA if they are staying in Marrakech.
  • We reuse paper and recycle card/plastic in the office. We do not produce printed brochures.

We aim to offer authentic, simple experiences which are unique to this part of the world. We aim to educate visitors on the nomadic way of life.

Please refer to the introduction on our background. We are passionate about sharing our nomadic background and desert experience with our visitors. The majority of our team are indigenous Amazigh, or Sahrawi (whose forebears migrated from much further south). The local guide will act as a bridge between the visitors and the cook and camel-handler.

On the desert hikes, our team wear traditional dress and we give our visitors each a desert turban to protect from the sun/wind when hiking.

Examples of the nomadic experiences we offer – walking for several hours each day accompanied by a camel caravan; preparing tea on the campfire; preparing sand-bread in the embers of the fire; singing traditional songs in the evening at camp; using the stars to navigate.

We provide detailed   Frequently Asked Questions   pages to visitors once they confirm a desert trip. We promote responsible travel/packing tips.

We encourage our visitors to visit one of the remaining ‘Ksar’ (series of earth-built dwellings) at Mhamid, on the Draa Valley. It is possible to visit a local family and take tea with them in their home, if so our guide will offer a small donation to the family.

“We booked a 14 day trip with Wild Morocco – and every moment exceeded our expectations. From the intimate riads with fabulous food to the local tours of Berber villages and tea with nomad families, we experienced the real Morocco – customs, culture, food, connections with the people.”

Group of travellers and Intrepid leader look over Ait Benhaddou

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy does of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a  3 day Sahara Mini Adventure  to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our  11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip,  or make it a quick journey on our  Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a  7 day Mount Toubkal Trek  or a  Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek  for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our  8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our  18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our  9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

How will I get around Morocco?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Morocco, you may find yourself traveling by:

Board an iconic ‘ship of the desert’ and amble off across desert sands for a quintessential Sahara experience.

Where will I stay in Morocco?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. The riad is the Moroccan traditional house, normally with two or more stories around an Andalusian-style courtyard that contained a fountain. Riads were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.

Does my trip to Morocco support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Morocco directly support our foundation partners, Education For All and High Atlas Foundation. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Education For All

Education for All allows girls in remote areas of Morocco to access education and prepare for successful careers. Donations from our trips help girls in the High Atlas Mountains through secondary school, bringing a generation of women out of the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and early marriage.

Find out more or make a donation.

High Atlas Foundation

The High Atlas Foundation helps communities in Morocco implement human development initiatives such as organic agriculture, women's empowerment, youth development, education and health initiatives. Donations from our trips directly support their sustainable agriculture programs, which fund fruit tree and wild medicinal plant nurseries, irrigation infrastructure, organic certification, technical skills-building, carbon sequestration, and commercialization.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my Intrepid trip include airfare?

While our Intrepid trips include many modes of transport, from tuk-tuks to overland vehicles, bullet trains and feluccas, airfare to and from your home country is not included in your tour package.

Morocco's 10 best natural wonders

Sep 11, 2020 • 5 min read

On the top of the flattest area you could imagine, suddenly a long mountain of sand rises. The Erg Chebbi dunes of wind-blown sand near the little town of Merzouga are renowned for their great height and size.

Sometimes, Morocco's scenery will stop you in your tracks © Kelly Cheng Travel Photography / Getty Images

From golden sand dunes to the lofty peaks of the High Atlas mountains, Morocco is an adventurer's dream. Epic landscapes carpet this slice of North Africa like the richly patterned rugs you’ll lust after in the souqs.

On lower ground, windswept coastlines, waterfalls and caves are tucked into forested hills and verdant palm oases. Here are Morocco’s top 10 natural wonders.

Editor's note: Please check the latest travel restrictions before planning any trip and always follow government advice.

Erg Chebbi

Shape-shifting over 17 miles from north to south and reaching heights of 525 feet, the great sand sea of Erg Chebbi is extraordinarily scenic. The rose-gold dunes rise dramatically above a pancake-flat, grey hamada (hard-packed rocky desert) and turn stunning shades of orange, pink and purple as the sun sets.

Plage Sauvage

Two-and-a-half miles south of Mirleft is this truly wild beach, accessible down a set of steps, featuring caves, cliffs and crashing waves great for surfing. There's an outpost of Spot-M here for board and wetsuit rental, and Biscou Surf School also brings students here. But the beach is gorgeous and the ocean relatively mild, whether or not you're riding a board.

Green fields in the foothills of High Atlas

High Atlas Mountains

Welcome to North Africa’s highest mountain range, known by Imazighen (Berbers) as “Idraren Draren” (Mountains of Mountains), and a trekker’s paradise from spring to autumn. The range runs diagonally across Morocco for almost 625 miles, encircling Marrakesh to the south and east from the Atlantic Coast just north of Agadir to Khenifra in the northeast. Its saw-toothed peaks act as a weather barrier between the mild, Mediterranean climate to the north and the Sahara to the south.

For rafters and kayakers, the valley is a green jewel where rafts whip between 8.3ft-wide limestone walls; for climbers and trekkers, the extreme topography and huge routes offer ridiculous views and a thrilling sense of wilderness.

The best hikes in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains

Jebel Toubkal

For pure mountain air that cuts through the heat and leaves you dizzy, don’t miss the highest mountain in North Africa: snowcapped Jebel Toubkal (13671 ft), situated in the heart of the Toubkal National Park . Mountain trails criss-crossing the range start from Imlil , which is located at the source of the Mizane River.

How to climb Toubkal, Morocco's highest peak

Camel drivers and camel caravan walk along the sand dunes in Erg Chigaga, Morocco

Erg Chigaga

There's not a single sand dune (erg) found at the misnamed Erg Chigaga, instead, there is an incredible stretch of golden sand sea some 35 miles southwest of M'Hamid. It is the largest sand sea in Morocco, snaking along the horizon for 25 miles and bordered to the north and south by mountain ridges. The best way to get here is in classic movie style: by camel (from Dh500 to Dh600 per day), which takes between five and seven days round-trip.

Gouffre de Friouato

More than 66ft wide and 755ft deep, the Gouffre de Friouato is said to be the deepest cavern in North Africa, and the cave system is possibly the most extensive. It was first investigated in 1935, and access leads down 520 precipitous steps (with handrails) to the floor of the cavern.

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you can squeeze through a hole to start exploring the fascinating chambers that are found 200 more steps below. It’s dark and eerily beautiful.

The most spectacular chambers, full of extraordinary formations, are the Salle de Lixus and the Salle de Draperies. They do indeed resemble thin sheets of curtains, frozen and calcified. Speleologists have explored to a depth of 984ft, and they believe there are more rooms another 1640ft below.

Ouzoud waterfalls, Grand Atlas in Morocco

Cascades d’Ouzoud

The many-tiered Cascades d’Ouzoud are stunningly beautiful, with several distinct falls, the largest a massive 328ft drop. The area is also one of the most popular day trips from Marrakesh, so be prepared to not have this natural idyll to yourself.

On summer weekends the cafe-lined paths that lead down to the falls are filled with local families and tourists browsing souvenir stalls and taking pictures. To reach the falls, walk past the signs for Riad Cascades d’Ouzoud towards the precipice, where converging paths wind down towards the largest falls and beyond.

Two men in a red motorboat head out to the surf at Oualidia beach

Oualidia (wa-lid-ee-ah) is a gorgeous crescent-shaped lagoon fringed with golden sands and protected from the wild surf by a rocky breakwater.

With great fish and seafood – the town is renowned for its oysters – and a range of accommodation options, it's a popular weekend and summer retreat for Marrakshis and Casablancais, and the perfect destination for those in need of a break from the city hubbub.

Outside July and August, it's quiet, with little more to do than relax, surf and gorge on shellfish. In spring and autumn, birdwatchers arrive to observe migrating pink flamingos, terns, egrets and more on the lagoon and surrounding coastal wetlands.

Iriqui National Park

Morocco’s largest national park – covering a landmass of 303,940 acres – and uniquely Saharan, Iriqui was created in 1994 to protect the biodiversity of this wild region of arid savanna, dunes and salt flats and, in particular, the ephemeral wetlands of Lake Iriqui which attracts migratory birds during the winter rainy season. It's around 55 miles of off-road driving from Foum Zguid, but can be visited as part of a tour to or from Erg Chigaga.

Rif Mountains

The Rif  (reef) is the greenest and most northerly of Morocco's mountain chains. It's an excellent place to explore, especially on foot. There are plenty of good hikes, particularly in Talassemtane National Park .

Day 1: Casablanca – Rabat – Chefchaouen

Fes - Marrocos

After arriving at the airport of Casablanca you will receive a warm welcome to the country from our guide. To start the tour we will go to one of the major wonders in Morocco: the Hassan II Mosque, the second highest mosque in the world, and a rare example of mosques that can be visited by non-Muslims. After lunch, we will depart for Rabat, where you can enjoy its beautiful domes, minarets, wide avenues and green spaces. It conciliates the best of a modern cosmopolitan life with the lively cultural traditions of Morocco. Rabat is a city that grew up in the fourteenth and fifteenth century, with the expulsion of Andalusians from the Iberian Peninsula. It is surrounded by three walls corresponding to the most significant stages of its history: the Almohad wall, the Andalusian wall and the Alawite wall. Your guide will show you these walls and the main attractions of the city like the Hassan Tower, situated on top of an imposing mosque, and the opulent tomb of Mohammed V among many others.

After lunch we will leave Rabat and head towards the blue city of Chefchaouen. To arrive at Chefchaouen is to dive into a labyrinth of that is unlike other Moroccan medinas, it has a perfect order and harmony. All roads lead to Hamman Square, where it is the largest mosque and meeting center of its inhabitants.

The blue city of Chefchaouen is one of the most charming and emblematic of Morocco. With a calm Medina, nestling between the Rif mountains and the Middle Atlas, Chefchaouen is famous for its handicrafts and goat’s cheese.

Suspended and anonymous among the mountains, the city is extraordinarily picturesque, ideal for those who like to explore a city with freedom and to take photos, and for those who find delight in details, in terms of culture or architecture. Enjoy also the view over the city, with its soft and continuous shades bathed in light, from the top of a hill.

Day 2: Chefchaouen

Casablanca - Marrocos

In this day, you can explore the Rift and the delights of its landscapes of this place of sublime beauty. The faint light of dawn over Akchour waterfalls or the “God’s Bridge” will allow you to discover breathtaking scenery and provide a good spot for photographs.

Then we will keep discovering the city of Chefchaouen, its harmonious gastronomy and handicraft offices where you can buy their product for very comfortable prices.

The best way to visit Chefchaouen is to let yourself be lost on its streets and watch life happen. Appreciate the traditional women’s clothes, blue above and with a kilt that resembles a blue and red striped quilt, with a nice straw hat to match. The visit of Chefchaouen, includes the view of the city from the top of a mountain, the washerwomen area near the river and the central square where there is a castle and a mosque with the only octagonal minaret of the Muslim world.

The tour is only complete if you are talking to the friendly locals and sampling the delicious food at one of the many restaurants, hidden in the narrow streets or in plain sight on the central square.

Day 3: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

Fes - Marrocos

After a relaxed breakfast, we will leave for Fes and on the way we will stop by the imperial city of Meknes.

Sultan Moulay Ismail dreamed of making Meknes the most splendid of the cities of North Africa, hence its nickname of “Versailles of the Maghreb”. Here we will visit the main points of interest with a professional guide which will tell you the rich stories and legends of Meknes and present the city. Nearby it is possible to do a wine tasting: a unique experience for the lovers of wine and impossible to repeat in any other part of Morocco.

We can visit the roman ruins of Volubilis, one of the best preserved roman sites of the world. For a long time, Volubilis was the principal roman administration center in the North Africa outside of Egypt.

Toward the end of the afternoon, we arrive in Fes, where we will still have time to see the city in its splendor, bathed in the soft light of the afternoon. We will take a short panoramic tour of the city.

For dinner, we recommend the Clock Café which always has a very original and diverse menu with original dishes such as a camel hamburger, among other Moroccan specialties that are not easily accessible. This Café also has an interesting cultural life: you can hear an ancient Moroccan tell his stories and talk about the Morocco of old, enjoy a cinema night, have a workshop of Arabic calligraphy, among others.

Fes - Marrocos

We will spend the morning and part of the afternoon visiting medina de Fes, described by Paul Bowles as “an enchanted labyrinth protected from time”. You will be assigned an extra historical guide who is thoroughly familiar with this city, so that you can discover it deeply: its corners, traditions, stories and history. The labyrinthical medina de Fes has more than 9000 streets that create a magical environment between light and shadow. It is considered as a World Heritage Site. Fes was once the capital of Morocco, and it has Fatimid, Andalusian, Arabic and Jewish influences. The city reached its peak in the 13th century, and it became a center of knowledge, with one of the world’s oldest universities. You will be able to visit the most important palaces, the Jewish quarters, the Madrassa (old school and university from the 13th century) and the Quranic school. Furthermore, you will visit the authentic handicraft of Fes and its work of leathers. It is possible to buy original leather products very cheaply near the place of production, where ancient methods are still used.

Day 5: Fes – Azrou – Merzouga

Deserto de Merzouga - Marrocos

We will leave in the morning to visit the magical cedar forests of Azrou and Ifran, where you will be dazzled with its spectacular native nature. The atmosphere is calm, clear and rich in nature’s scents. On our journey, we will make a brief stop in Midelt, a small town between the High and the Middle Atlas, an exceptional location to watch the exuberant mountain landscape. During our journey, you may observe monkeys and other typical animals of these forests. After arriving in Merzouga, you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan tea as a welcome sign of affection. After that it’s time for ridding a camel through the desert for about an hour to visit some of the most beautiful oases of the desert. You will also visit the dunes of Merzouga, a UNESCO world heritage site. After that you can have an unforgettable dinner outdoors, in the desert, under a beautiful nomad tent where, in ancient times, the weddings were celebrated, and where the wedding dinner occurred. After dinner, there will be live music, and those who wish to can dance around the fire.

Day 6: Merzouga – Ramlia

Ramlia - Marrocos

After an unforgettable night, you can wake up early to the morning in the desert, and let the first light of the day show you the wide space of the desert. For the ones who crave adventure, it is possible to do sandboard in the dunes, paragliding, or ride a 4×4 moto as an extra activity. After breakfast, we head in the direction of the deep desert, where you will have the opportunity to meet the nomads. This is the ancient desert, still with off-road tracks. Along the way, it is possible to see small oásis and villages, cross the desert with dunes or drive freelly through plains. After arriving in the oasis where you will be staying, you can enjoy various activities such as Moroccan cooking workshops and learning about the life in an oasis.. You will have the opportunity to meet a local family, have lunch with them and share their customs. Moroccans are an incredibly hospitable people. In the evening after a delicious dinner enjoy the night in this magnetic and mystical place.

Day 7: Ramlia – Todra Gorges – Skoura

Skoura - Marrocos

After an unforgettable night in the desert, and getting to know its culture, traditions and nature, you will leave for something completely different, the rocky landscape of the Gorges, the high Atlas and the green beauty of the Dadès Valley. Explore the Todra Gorge, which is one of the most spectacular canyons in the world, towering rock cliffs that reach 600 meters high, each separated only by 10 meters, and that extend through several kilometers.

Finally reach the palm grove of Skoura, one of the rare palm trees in Morocco, with 25 kilometers square. The whispers of palm trees are powered by the sound of the breeze, the crickets, frogs, birds and the course of the water, the element of nature that creates the life of this little paradise.

Day 8: Skoura – Ait Benhaddou – Imlil

Imlil - Marrocos

Start the day by taking a walk through Skoura. After that, we will follow the “Route of the One Thousand Kasbahs”, until Kalaat Mgouna – The City of the Roses. A Kasbah is an ancient form of Castle, and even the word “Castle” has its origins in the word “Kasbah”. Next, we will go to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou, which are two locations of great historical and cultural importance in the Atlas mountains. You will feel as if you have travelled in time to see the landscape and the lives of those who dedicated themselves to trade. Ait Benhaddou is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is the most important ksar in the “Route of the One Thousand Kasbahs”, a route of small fortifications that allowed the caravans of trade to travel between the Sahara Desert and the city of Marrakesh. It is still inhabited and used as setting, for movies, such as “Gladiator” and “Game of Thrones”, to add authenticity.

Follow the calm and clear high Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, going higher than 2000m of height, and where the rocky hills and scarps that remind an old western movie.

Arrive finally at the marvelous mountains of Imlil, green in Spring and Summer, covered in Autumn leaves in the Fall and with snow during the Winter, the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.

Day 9: Imlil – Marrakech

Marraquexe - Marrocos

Imlil is a typical village from the Atlas, 1760m high, where you can enjoy all the beauty and peace of the splendor of the mountains. It is the best place for those who love outdoor walks, through the mountain. These walks include a picnic on the mountain, accompanied by a guide from the Atlas.

There are several points of interest that can be visited near Imlil, like the Takerkoust Lake and the little Berbers villages from the Atlas. One of the adjoining montes is the monte Toubkal, the highest Northern-African point (4167m). You will visit this wonderful places with an experienced mountain guide who knows the best and most beautiful trekking circuits.

In the evening we will arrive in Marrakech, where we will spend the night and enjoy all the life and bustle of the city.

Day 10: Marrakech

Marraquexe - Marrocos

Visit Marrakesh, the red city of Morocco and the cosmopolitan centre of the country. The surprising architecture, the intense sent of spices, the colourful and exotic atmosphere, and the small corners and secrets of its history make this city the most desired and visited city of Morocco.

During the day the best choice is to be accompanied by a tourist guide exclusively dedicated to the city of Marrakesh, so that you can enjoy the best the city has to offer.

The attractions are multiple: the Bahia Palace (opulent building from the 19th century),the Ben Youssef Medersa (old mussluman university), Majorelle’s gardens, along many more. Commerce is chaotic and it is the city’s main activity.

At night, dine at the Jemaa el Fna Square, a market under open sky, where the mixture of scents, songs and shows are engaging and where the most traditional and typical food can be tasted at Moroccan prices. Return to the Riad.

Day 11: Marrakech – Essaouira

Essaouira - Marrocos

After the excitement of Marrakesh we will leave to the fresh and artistic coastal city of Essaouira. It is one of the loveliest cities in Morocco and it is also a multicultural artistic centre that has captivated people like Jimi Hendrix, Orson Welles and Bob Marley. With a fresh ocean breeze that is permanently invading all the corners of its medina, the city of Essaouira stands out by its urban life, culture. Highlight for its gastronomy, based of fresh fish and in the use of argan oil.

Essaouira Medina was built on the 18th century and it is one of the few in the world that had in facto an architectonic planning. It was by then that the city was given the name of Essaouira, which literally means “beautifully drawn”.

Nowadays the city is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it is the favourite place of most Moroccan artists and musicians. The city is also the stage of the famous music festival Gnoa, an old spiritual art form of the North-African Islamism.

Day 12: Essaouira – Casablanca

Essaouira - Marrocos

Explore the coast/Shore of Morocco with its deserted beaches, fresh fish, marvelous food and genuine cities. Leaving Essaouira, stop in Safi, the centre of exportation of sardine and famous for its pottery; Oualidia, is a small village by the sea with a protected lagoon, and the wild Atlantic Ocean always by your side; and El Jadida, a small port city, previously controlled by Portugal, that is now World Heritage Site.

The scenery along the route is other worldly, and we want to have time to take it all in—birds, history, geology, culture, and cuisine! This tour is designed to pair perfectly with our Spain Birding & Nature tour or runs well as a stand-alone. This tour is designed to pair perfectly with our Spain tour or runs well as a stand-alone.

Trip Itinerary

Itineraries are guidelines; variations in itinerary may occur to account for weather, road conditions, closures, etc. and to maximize your experience.

Sun., Apr. 9 : Arrivals

Arrive today at Marrakech Airport, where you are met to transfer to our hotel. Depending on arrival times you can bird the hotel gardens or simply rest after a long day of travel. Booted Eagle, and Little and Pallid Swifts are regulars above the gardens. Gather for some late-afternoon garden birding and enjoy a welcome dinner with your guide and travel companions. Some may want to arrive early to explore the city; we are in an area that is quite comfortable to walk in and enjoy. We’ve blocked a few rooms for April 8;, contact us if you wish to use one. Accommodations at Hotel Farah Marrakech or similar (D)

Mon., Apr. 10 : Marrakech’s Medina & Souk | High Atlas Mountains

This morning we explore the famous Medina and Souk of Marrakech with a local guide that shares history and a passion for Morocco’s culture. Imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of this stunning market! We also enjoy lunch here, then head on to Morocco’s natural highlights, taking off on a scenic drive into our next lodgings in the mountains, with some birding stops in route, particularly to survey for the elusive Barbary Partridge. The northern aspect of the Atlas Mountain range is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean; hence the vegetation is green and lush, but as we climb the landscape changes and vegetation clings to areas where water passes and becomes sparse on the steep slopes of the multi-colored mountains. As we go, we make stops that give us a leg stretch and a chance to find the elusive Levaillant’s Woodpecker. It’s a dramatic part of the country and we enjoy this landscape in depth. Accommodations at Guesthouse Mamouchthke or similar near Oukaïmeden (B,L,D)

Tues., Apr. 11 : High Atlas Mountains Full Day | Oukaïmeden

Enjoy a full day of birding a scenic valley and national park of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, where the views are spectacular and varied. The area we visit also has a ski area, where we enjoy lunch at a café. This part of the journey presents contrast to our desert experience; mountain specialties include finding possible Tristram’s Warbler, Atlas Horned Lark, Crimson-winged Finch, Seebohm’s Wheatear, Alpine Chough, and Red-billed Chough; we also hope for good views of Barbary Falcon and Moussier’s Redstart. Dipper and Common Rock Thrush might also be seen here along a rushing stream we explore; wildflowers are lovely here as well. Our previous visits and success at finding these key birds has ranged from very easy to difficult—much depends on the weather, so all things crossed the weather is kind and we have no difficulties finding our birds. Views abound as do wildflowers in bloom. A great way to start our adventures. Accommodations at Guesthouse Mamouchthke or similar (B,L,D)

Wed., Apr. 12 : Travel Day – Tizi N’Tichka Pass

We return down the mountain grade today, then climb it again to negotiate another high pass of the Atlas Mountains. We can take a break for our lunch at the top of the pass and wander more in the alpine realm if we missed some species yesterday—or snap some scenic shots and continue onward. Rock Bunting and Rock Sparrow are possible here. It is a day of amazing scenery and wonderful birds, and we end up at a lovely oasis known for great food and hospitality. We make our way to the gorgeous town of Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara Desert and famous for its movie studios (Lawrence of Arabia was filmed here). We stop at river crossings where we may find green gardens and species such as Melodious, Bonelli’s, Subapline, and Spectacled Warblers along with many other species. We aim to arrive at our hotel with time for guests to relax and clean up before dinner and the run through of our bird checklist. Enjoy the rich texture of Moroccan rugs and furnishings and some local riverine birding. Accommodations at Riad Tama or similar (B,L,D)

Thurs., Apr. 13 : Ouarzazate | Todra Gorge | Boumaine du Dades

This morning we bird our way from our delightful riad visiting the famous birding area of the Tagdilt Track and the surrounding high steppe plateau. The route is also a good one to watch the world go by as we drive; catch scenes of daily life for rural Moroccans tending fields, moving livestock, unloading their camels or donkeys, and enjoying tea and conversation along the roadside. We enjoy our lunch in the Boumaine area and then explore the steppes, walking out into open areas looking for Temminck’s, Thick-billed, and Greater Short-toed Larks, Cream-colored Courser, Red-rumped Wheatear, and a host of other species, including raptors. Time passes quickly; we settle into new lodgings, then enjoy our delightful Kasbah dinner, and a chance to catch up on our species list this evening. Accommodations at Kasbah Tizzarouine or similar (B,L,D)

Fri., Apr. 14 : Boumaine | Gorges du Dades | Draa Valley

This morning we drive up into and through the Gorges du Dades, an amazing deep sided valley with equally amazing geological features. Our photographers can savor the rich colors and textures of this dramatic landscape as we stop for views and a chance to scan for birds. The road up the Gorge winds between villages with classic kasbahs and mosques, and many brick buildings with flat roofs. The gorge itself is quite steep; we watch for Crag Martin and Gray Wagtail, and hopefully find Tristram’s Warbler by walking up a small but steep, shrubby ravine at our turn-around spot, a small coffee shop. Lunch is at one of our favorite spots today, in the garden of Riad Dades Birds in the Dades Valley. Here we enjoy wonderful food and hospitality and let the birds come to us, including a favorite of many, the Hoopoe! Continuing on, we are sure to stop along the way to take in the scenery and keep our eyes on the sky as we are now in Bonelli’s Eagle territory. We also look for Crag Martin and Blue Rock Thrush. Nightingales are often singing at the river’s edge below our hotel. Accommodations at Kasbah Tizzarouine or similar (B,L,D)

Sat., Apr. 15 : Boumaine de Dades | Sahara Desert near Mezouga | Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes

Today is largely a travel day as we leave the Draa Valley, an extensive river system lined by palmeries and small villages; it is also a main route for migrant birds arriving from the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert. We should find our first Blue-cheeked Bee-Eater here among other exotic migrants, so we need to be in our best “find the bird” mode as we head into the desert. From this wonderful valley we head east and make our way to the largest sand dune complex of the Moroccan Sahara, Erg Chebbi. We make this unique area our home for three nights. One of the three we are “glamping” at a desert camp in the dunes! This is not so much camping as glamping, which consists of personal large tents with en suite facilities including toilet, wash area, and shower, all simple luxuries in the Sahara, With the sand dunes out your door, the food and campfire entertainment provides a glimpse into Berber life. Accommodations at Auberge Les Dunes d’Or Merzouga or similar (B,L,D)

Sun., Apr. 16 : Full Day in the Sahara

We spend a day in the desert, traversing the dunes and open areas in our 4x4 vehicles, searching for Egyptian Nightjar, Desert Warbler, Crowned and Spotted Sandgrouse, Hoopoe Lark, Cream-colored Courser, Fulvous Babbler, and Lanner Falcon to name but a few! The scenery is stunning, and we really are on an adventure day with birds. Later in the day we enjoy lunch and then make our way to the sand plains nearby for Pharaoh Eagle Owl and a nesting place for Lanner Falcon. Accommodations at Auberge Les Dunes d’Or Merzouga or similar (B,L,D)

Mon., Apr. 17 : More Time in the Sahara | Sleep Under the Dunes & Stars!

We added another day to this area to take in some of the temporary wetlands and small pocket oasis for desert birding. This also gives us time to look for a few of the more challenging species such as Bar-tailed and Dunn’s Lark. Depending on winter rainfall we visit desert lagoons and if they are present then prepare for a wonderful selection of shorebirds including Marbled Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, and Greater Flamingo. This third night is typically our glamping night, so we set off in four-wheel drive vehicles to get there. Dropped off in a quiet pocket of the dunes, we are embraced by sand dunes and views. The highly local Desert Sparrow is likely to already be seen at our camp and from there the night skies are remarkable! Enjoy conversation around the campfire and night sounds of the desert. Accommodations at a luxury tented camp in the Merzouga desert (B,L,D)

Tues., Apr. 18 : Merzouga | Birding on Return to Ouarzazate

This morning we depart and take a leisurely drive to our next destination, a return to Ouarzazate. The journey provides places where we can stop to seek a few birds and we also pass through the Valley of the Roses, a famous region in Morocco where women’s cooperatives harvest rose petals and rosehips to manufacture cosmetics and lotions. If the group wants to view these products, we make time for stopping at a cooperative—a big hit for our group in years’ past. We take our lunch at a desert Kasbah near to the town of Skoura, or journey onwards for lunch in Ouarzazate. We stop at a local reservoir for some water birds, viewing with scopes for a host of species including herons, egrets, and even Osprey. We may find Ruddy Sheldrake, Little and Great-crested Grebes, both Black and Whiskered Terns, Great Cormorant, both Little and Great Egrets, and above us several swift species. The approach road should also produce birds such as European Bee Eater and Black-eared Wheatear that are en route to Europe. After our lunch we search a couple of green areas, cultivated by local villagers, to look for migrants such as roller and warbler species. Our hotel is up on a bluff with a fine view of an ancient Kasbah used as a film set for Game of Thrones. Those that wish can walk down the entry road to bird there, walking among planted dates and pomegranate trees, often an oasis for migrants passing through. Whinchat like the rocky hillside on our route and near the kasbah we might find Iberian Chiffchaff, White Wagtail (Moroccan race), both Spotted and European Pied Flycatchers, and European Turtle and Eurasian Collared Doves. Hospitality at the Riad is memorable, we enjoy conversation perched in a sunny alcove with the taste and smell of fresh Moroccan mint tea. Local rugs and furnishings give a cozy feel. Dinner is one of the best of the trip, perhaps a tagine carefully crafted by the family from running this small property from their private recipes. Accommodations at Hotel Riad Tamadakhte or similar (B,L,D)

Wed., Apr. 19 : Return to Marrakech | Ounila Valley

Enjoy a fine breakfast at Riad Tamadakhte before we continue on our loop drive back up and over the Atlas Mountains. We pass a World Heritage Site and stop for views of it, the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou. Geology along this stretch is some of the best of the trip, with intricate colors and folds in the rock like our finest southwestern scenery. Follow the Ounila Valley for its length and then ascend to meet up with the road we first used to cross the pass. On stops we may find Coal Tit, Mistle Thrush, and Common Raven. Along the route we look for Tawny and Tree Pipits, Black-eared Wheatear, Blue Rock-Thrush, and we another chance for both Tristram’s Warbler and Rock Sparrow. We chose this route, looping back through Marrakech both for scenery and due to road conditions, the alternate road crossing over to Agadir is dusty, bumpy, and slow. This route keeps us on pavement once we’re back at the pass. We look for birds along the way, finding possibly Little Owl or Woodchat Shrike, arriving toward evening at our familiar hotel. As our energies permit, we may venture out for dinner at a nearby local restaurant tonight. Accommodations at Hotel Farah Marrakech or similar (B,L,D)

Thurs., Apr. 20 : The Coast at Agadir | Shorebirds, Waders & Gulls

On a modern road, we can be in Agadir, a popular winter destination known for its beaches, on the Atlantic coast of Morocco in about three hours. We arrive in time for lunch and then spend the afternoon birding at the Oued Souss. Here we add a stunning variety of shorebirds and waterbirds, including gulls and terns to our list and we experience whole new habitats and vistas. About ten miles south of the city, we enjoy a leisurely walk along an embankment as we look for stilts and other waders. The mouth of the Souss River is a Ramsar site, indicating its international significance for conservation. We look for Barbary Falcon and keep an eye on surrounding trees for raptors. Laughing Dove and Maghreb Magpie are found as well as the wetland species. We return to the city for time to freshen up, enjoy dinner and catch up on our growing species list. Accommodations at Hotel Riad Agadir or similar (B,L,D)

Fri., Apr. 21 : Oued Souss Massa National Park

The Oued Souss and Oued Massa estuaries are located at opposite ends of the 130+ square mile national park along Morocco’s scenic coastline. We have the full day to visit, as we seek out one of the rarest birds in the world, the Northern Bald Ibis. Three of Morocco’s four populations are protected here. The ibis nesting colonies and roost-sites are located on coastal cliffs within the national park and can be viewed safely with scopes from a distance. Coastal steppe habitats and fields are used as feeding areas and with luck we see them flying between areas as well. The park has a nature trail and visitor center. In addition to looking for the ibis, we explore the Massa River estuary which also has many great species, including Squacco and Purple Heron, Plain Martin, and European Thick-knee. We have the chance to use our scopes for some sea watching and as time permits, we may go inland a way to the local reservoir catchment of the Massa River. Black-crowned Tchagra is found here locally. Enjoy some fresh local seafood at dinner if you like and tally up our checklist. Accommodations at Hotel Riad Agadir or similar (B,L,D)

Sat., Apr. 22 : Oued Souss | Marrakech

We linger a bit at this wonderful coast to sample bird life at the Souss estuary. Established in 1991, the park is one of Morocco’s top birding locations so the more time here the better. Gulls may include Mediterranean, Slender-billed, and Audouin’s; out to sea we look for Northern Gannets diving. We scan the estuary and adjacent flooded fields, then return to pack up and depart. We then journey back to Marrakech on a modern comfortable road, birding along the way. At dinner we share tour highlights and favorite species—difficult to choose with so many vibrant memories! Accommodations at Hotel Farah Marrakech or similar (B,L,D)

Sun., Apr. 23 : Departures | or, Join Our Spain Tour!

Today is departure day and you may plan your flights at leisure and thus enjoy time to relax depending on your time for the homeward bound flight. Enjoy a very leisurely breakfast with time to pack or venture out to a local garden or park. Lunch can be available for those not leaving until the afternoon or early evening, although this is not included in the cost of the tour. Pace & Protocols +

Pace of the tour & what to expect.

You will receive a Schedule-at-a-Glance and list of hotels (our eContact List) a few weeks before your departure. This will serve as an outline for each day and alert you to any recent changes made in the schedule or to our hotels, if needed.

Our journeys are set up to follow the rhythm of nature. Our focus is on birding and nature; we offer full, well-planned field days and often get up early for that magical time around dawn. We generally follow the published itinerary, but we stay flexible to the weather, wildlife opportunities and the interests of the group. Your guide will keep you apprised of the next day’s schedule at each evening meal, noting what to bring and what to prepare for. Questions and/or concerns are welcome.

The pace of our Naturalist Journeys tours is moderate; to fully participate you should be able to get in and out of vehicles several times a day, and walk 1-3 miles over uneven terrain.  It is important to participate with a flexible attitude as adjustments may be made in our schedule to make the most of our time in the field or for other purposes at your guide's discretion. We are not a “listing” bird company that drills down on target species, but at times we do wait for those special species unique to the places we visit. During the day, we take time to stop for photos and for educational opportunities to learn about conservation projects, landscapes, and geology. We appreciate other taxa as well as birds, with mammals often the biggest draw but plants and butterflies are also very popular. Our clients often lend their own expertise to the mix.

We like to make meals a fun and memorable part of the experience, too. Breakfasts are often at hotels, and we carry snacks, fruit, and water in the vans each day. Lunches are a mix of picnics in the field (weather dependent) and a chance to dine with locals at small cafes and restaurants. For dinner, we pride ourselves in our homework to keep up with the best choices for dining, choosing restaurants with atmosphere that specialize in local foods. On occasion we keep dinner simple to go back out in the field for sunset wildlife viewing or night walks. In some remote locations, our choices are limited. If you are tired, room service for dinner may be an option you can choose.

Naturalist Journeys International Trips: Guide Role

Naturalist Journeys supports ecotourism and the development of excellent local guides. Once we know our international partners and guides well, we can send out small groups working directly with these trusted partners, adding a Naturalist Journeys guide to assist the local expert when we have a group of 6-7 or more. This helps us keep your costs down while retaining tour quality. The local guide is your main guide. You can expect your Naturalist Journeys guide to be well-researched and often they are experienced in the destination, but their role is not to be primary, it is to help to organize logistics, help you find birds, mammals, and interesting other species in the field, keep reports, help facilitate group interactions, and to keep the trip within Naturalist Journeys' style. Local guides live in the countries we travel to, know the destinations intimately, and are often the strongest force for conservation in their countries. They open many doors for us to have a rich experience.

Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle or in any situation where the group is participating in an activity together, such as a vehicle excursion or a guided walk. Please respect all designated smoking areas at hotels and restaurants.

Transportation

As a courtesy to each other, we ask that all travelers please rotate seating. On international trips we may all be in one small bus, on some trips we are in vans, particularly the roomy Sprinter Vans when available. Some areas require us to be in smaller 4-wheel drive or safari vehicles. Rotation allows you to sit with different drivers and alternate front and back seating.

Photo Release & Sharing

We take many group photos and will share photos with the group. And after your tour, we will organize a chance to share photos via Dropbox or Google Photos. Please note that this is our policy and if you prefer to be excluded, we need to know ahead of your tour.

By registering for this tour, you agree to grant to Naturalist Journeys and its authorized representatives’ permission to record on photography film and/or video, pictures of my participation in the tour. You further agree that any or all of the material photographed may be used, in any form, as part of any future publications, brochure, or other printed materials used to promote Naturalist Journeys, and further that such use shall be without payment of fees, royalties, special credit or other compensation.

Travel Insurance

You are traveling in remote areas. Naturalist Journeys strongly recommends you have full medical and evacuation insurance from a company such as  Allianz , for all international travel. If you do not have medical coverage or evacuation coverage on your existing travel insurance policy or for some reason elected not to take that out, we advise getting an evacuation plan with Global Rescue ,  World Nomads , Medjet , Allianz (they can do evacuation only) or a similar company. These plans are typically $300-$400 for a year for multiple destinations. This coverage may be a part of a larger Travel Insurance policy but can also be purchased on its own.

Please contact Naturalist Journeys by email at [email protected] or telephone our office: (520) 558-1146 or toll free: (866) 900-1146 if you have any questions. Many thanks for traveling with us and we hope you enjoy your journey.

Morocco Nature and Wildlife

morocco nature tours

With more than forty ecosystems located throughout the country, Morocco offers much more variety than the expected arid desert. A great deal of these ecosystems is protected, holding national park or national reserve status while hosting various plant and animal species.

In order to protect such nature and wildlife, national parks and reserves have been created throughout the country. Oued Massa Nature Reserve located in Agadir is a birdwatcher's paradise while also offering incredible plant and animal life. The Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere of Morocco and Spain is part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program. Created in 2006, the goal of such projects is to educate the public and promote conservation and research. Within the biosphere is Talassemtane National Park. A final example of protected areas is Tazekka National Park which covers a diverse range of terrain located in the middle of the Atlas Mountain Range . It is a true example of conservation at work. Originally conceived to protect a grove of cedar trees in the Jbel Tazekka area, it now works to preserve various caves, canyons, rural landscapes, animals and birds.

There are approximately 210 bird species found in Morocco including woodpeckers, flamingos, spoonbills and storks. There are a further 11 threatened or endangered species. Regarding mammals, Morocco is home to around 105 mammal species including golden jackals, the red fox and leopards. Like the bird population, there are a further 18 threatened mammal species.

Stretching across both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, Morocco’s coastline hosts cities like Tangiers and Casablanca . Along with these fascinating cities is equally fascinating marine wildlife. It is not uncommon to spot dolphins and porpoises in the waters as well as many seabirds.

Also found on the coasts of Morocco is the extremely endangered Mediterranean monk seal. With only around 450-510 left, they are one of the most endangered mammals in the world. However, Morocco, along with Mauritania, Spain and Portugal signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Concerning Conservation Measures for the Eastern Atlantic Population of the Mediterranean Monk Seal which came into effect on 17 October 2007. This MoU aims to provide a legal framework for implementing an action plan to save this creature.

Desert wildlife in Morocco is made up of the Dorcas gazelle which is the smallest gazelle in the world and the Fennec fox which is also the smallest fox in the world. Along with these mammals are golden jackals, the addax or screwhorn antelope and rodents as well as snakes and lizards. The Atlas and Rif Mountains provide habitats for the Burbary macaque, wild boars, birds like eagles and cardinals and lizards.

The coastal areas host various plants like eucalyptus, loquat and acacia while the mountainous regions have forests of evergreen, oak, fir, pine and cedar among others. There are also olive trees, scrub brush and alfalfa grass.

We loved our tour with Cultural Morocco Tours! It exceeded our expectations and they provided an excellent and seamless adventure to this beautiful country. Ismael was our driver-he was courteous and drove safely. Had plenty of water, opened doors for us and lugged our luggage. He came with us when we checked in to our hotels and well-I would highly recommend this tour service!

As a group of friends from California, we are Latina girls always love traveling together, and our recent adventure with Vacations to go was truly one of the best we've ever had. From exploring Marrakech to soaking in the sights of Casablanca, every moment was filled with excitement and joy. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to Mustapha for his exceptional care and attention throughout the tour. His knowledge and warmth made our journey even more memorable. Private 5 days from Casablanca to Marrakech Visiting Chefchaouen, Fes & desert

What a marvelous beautiful trip this was. As a solo female traveler, I was concerned about safety when planning my trip to Morroco but Cultural Morroco Tours addressed all of my worries and made sure I had a truly incredible adventure. They answered all my questions and even provided the contact information of my tour guide, Yassine, days before I departed. Yassine was truly amazing, the best guide I’ve ever had. He made me feel like I was traveling with close family and friends. He answered my many questions, provided timely and pertinent suggestions, he adjusted the schedule as needed to maximize the sights and experiences ensuring that nothing was missed. He and the team of local tour guides are very knowledgeable and their kindness made this trip a one of kind experience

Moroccan Desert Adventure: River Canyons & Camels

We were driving a lot in Marocco, but we could see many facets of the country by doing so. The schedule was tight so I would advice to book one or more extra days to discover Marrakesh on your own afterwards. The bus for Transportation had air conditioning, was comfortable and clean. The driver did a good job, but on same places the winding route across the Atlas can be difficult for people who ten with motion sickness. Get some tablets for that. The guide was helpful and took good care of us. The accommodation varies from very beautiful in Marrakesh to simple in the mountain village. But even the mountain village has showers etc. The food was good and gave us some opportunities to test the local stuff. The prices were about 100 Diram per meal. Which is a bit higher than necessary, but acceptable.

Timeless Morocco Tour

Timeless Morocco

My wife and I had an excellent time. The tour was very well organized and the guides were very knowledgeable in every location. Every location was unique and provided great examples of Morocco’s diverse landscapes, people, and ways of life. The only negative thing to mention would be the pace that was necessary in order to take everything in, but this was an adventure and not a leisure trip. We highly recommend this trip for those looking for an adventure in Morocco.

6 Days Best of Morocco Tour

6 Days Best of Morocco

In February we had an unforgettable tour all the way from Tanger to Chefchaouen, Fes, the Desert and Marakech – to name only the longer stops. Ali organized everything and was us a cheerful guide. He was very flexible and adapted the route according to our wishes. Timing was perfect, we never had to wait for the hotel, all the local guides he organized arrived before us. They were all very experienced, nice people. During the car drive we listened to nice Berber music and had interesting chats with Ali. It was a wonderful experience giving us much more from the country as if we would have traveled on our own – not to speak of the burden of organizing everything which he took over. We only can recommend Joy Travel if you plan to visit Morocco. Minè and Akos from Switzerland

Reviews of Small Group tours to Morocco

Fast paced as suggested in the brochure, covering a vast amount of territory. This gave us as the traveller a great opportunity to see various places in Morocco, The local guides were great in their knowledge,A little more general knowledge whilst travelling would have enhanced our travel even more. The Médina tours in Fez and Marrakesh were overlong and rushed. For a general overview of this diverse land this tour had it all.
Excellent tour that was well organised. A lot of places covered, always felt safe and well informed. Our host Abdul was amazing! His knowledge and experience made the trip so personal and wonderful. I feel as though after 9 days I have seen a lot of the beautiful country that is Morocco! Highly recommended.
