Street Art Walk RADIUS in Dortmund – Heimat und Hafen

Heimat finden – das kannst du jetzt auf ganz besondere Weise beim Street Art Walk durch das Dortmunder Hafenquartier. Dort sind mit dem Urban Art Projekt RADIUS zehn Kunstwerke an Fassaden, in Gärten und Parks entstanden, die sich kreativ mit dem Begriff Heimat auseinandersetzen. Die „Leinwände“ für die Straßenkunst könnten nicht unterschiedlicher sein: von riesigen Hallenwänden bis zur Mauerritze im Kleingarten.

Ich bin den etwa 5,5 Kilometer langen Rundweg durch den Dortmunder Norden gelaufen und habe nicht nur Kunst, sondern auch ein bisschen Meerweh, originelle Cafés an der Hafenkante und spannende Kultur-Orte entdeckt, die mir sonst nicht aufgefallen wären. Wenn du nach dem virtuellen Rundgang hier Lust hast, den Walk in Dortmund selbst zu machen, findest du bei Google Maps eine Karte mit der Route und allen Standorten:

Das Motto von Graffiti-Künstler Marc Kemper ist „Move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy“ – dementsprechend regen die kurzen Botschaften an der Hauswand zum Nachdenken über unsere Beziehung zu Stadt, Abfall, Natur, Heimat und Lebensraum ein. Wo fühlen wir uns zu Hause? In der Stadt, in der Natur, auf der Erde?

2 | HEIMAT großgeschrieben von Markus Wiese

Der Dortmunder Künstler Markus Wiese aka „Mason“ arbeitet hauptsächlich mit Typografie und Geometrie – auch bei RADIUS. Die Gestaltung der Buchstaben erinnert an feurige Sonnenuntergänge über dem Ruhrgebiet. Der Künstler begann sein Schaffen in den Achtzigerjahren mit Lackspray und ließ sich von Street Art in Städten wie Amsterdam, London oder Paris inspirieren.

3 | Blindenschrift-Kunst von Alexis Dworsky

An der Außenmauer der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Realschule gibt es Street Art zum Ertasten. Kunstprofessor Alexis Dworsky, der unter anderem über Google Street View virtuell durch die Welt reist und Vorträge darüber hält, hat an der Dortmunder Schule mit Förderschwerpunkt Hören und Kommunikation eines seiner ein Braille-Kunstwerk installiert.

Neben Kunstwerken, die zu RADIUS gehören, tauchen während des Walks in der Dortmunder Nordstadt auch Street-Art-Botschaften von anderen Künstler*innen oder unbekannten Verfassern auf.

5 | Eine Giebelwand voller Heimat von André Trafic

Ein Container, der sich langsam auf einen Anker hinabsenkt – ganz viel Hafenliebe gibt es beim riesigen Mural von André Trafic. Der Künstler mag es, Industrie und Natur in Beziehung zu setzen und den Betrachtenden dazu zu bringen, über Menschen und ihren Umgang miteinander und mit ihrem Planeten nachzudenken. Wenn er keine großen Wand-Graffitis schafft, arbeitet er an kleinteiliger Keramik-Kunst.

6 | Den Raum verändern – Samuel Treindl

Es summt im kleinen Stadtgarten an der Straßen-Ecke. Der offene Community-Garden „7000 Schmetterlinge“ ist nicht nur ein Paradies für Insekten, sondern auch ein Ruheort für Anwohner und alle, die auf ihrem Street Art Walk hier vorbeikommen. Mitten im Garten findet sich eine Skulptur von Samuel Treindl. Treindl steht für anarchistische Produktionen und Materialforschung.

„More than Words“ ist ein Zusammenschluss aus vier Künstlern, die professionell Fassaden, Stromkästen, Züge, Autos oder Innenräume gestalten. Auch auf dem RADIUS-Rundgang findet man ihre Spuren.

Der Walk auf dem Rundgang führt nicht nur streng zu den Kunstwerken von RADIUS, sondern auch vorbei an Dortmunds Hafen mit weiteren Street Art Motiven, alternativen Hafen-Cafés und ehemaligen Industriegebäuden.

Eine große Welle schwappt über das Dortmunder U, das mitsamt dem Hafen auf großen Stelen steht. Daneben eine überdimensionale Flaschenpost und eine Yellow Submarine. In einem Innenhof versteckt sich das Werk von Robert Matze aka Rookie. Mit Sarkasmus und Spott kommentiert der Künstler Alltagssituationen. Seine Graffitis sind wie ein Schnappschuss mit einer Kamera.

10 | Fische, Mikroskope und Zettelsalat by Pandora 2.0

Manche Kunstwerke sind so groß, dass man einen Schritt zurücktreten muss, um sie zu erfassen. Die Seitenwand, die Pandora 2.0 im Hafengebiet gestaltet hat, ist nicht nur immens, sondern auch turbulent: Fische, Papierzettel, ein Mikroskop, ein Hai – das Mural wirkt wie ein kurioses Aquarium, in dem man immer wieder neue Motive entdeckt.

Pandora 2.0 ist eine Arbeits- und Begegnungsstätte aus Containern direkt am Hafenbecken. Die Community möchte aus Brachland schöne Orte machen. Gelungen!

Das Depot ist einer der Initiatoren des RADIUS Kunst Walks. Außerdem gibt es hier immer wieder tolle Ausstellungen, Konzerte und Interventionen. Auf dem Street Art Spaziergang kommt man direkt am Depot vorbei – reinschauen lohnt sich immer.

12 | Tausend bunte Augen von Ursula Meyer

Direkt am Depot befindet sich eine Steinwand, die mit bunten Augen übersät ist. Hier gibt es auch noch mal eine Bank für eine Pause. Schöpferin Ursula Meyer liebt Farben jeder Art und möchte nicht nur die Welt etwas bunter gestalten, sondern auch vorbeigehende Leute stutzig machen. She not only wants to make the world a little more colourful, but also to make people passing by wonder about what they see.

13 | Winzige Kunst zum Suchen und Staunen

Wo ist die Kunst? Nach all den großen Murals und bunten Farbklecksen in der Stadt, lädt Evelyn Bracklow zu einer Spurensuche im Detail ein. Im Kleingarten Hafenwiese hat die Künstlerin an fünf Orten Ameisen versteckt – in echter, winziger Lebensgröße. Einige von ihnen krabbeln am Vereinshaus hoch – findest du den Rest?

Drei ungewöhnliche Spaziergänge in Dortmund

Endlich Frühling und somit Zeit rauszugehen! Da die Möglichkeiten aufgrund der Pandemie immer noch sehr eingeschränkt sind, stelle ich Euch drei sehr unterschiedliche Spaziergänge in Dortmund vor, die etwas Abwechslung in den Alltag bringen.

Street Art: Graffiti Tour in Dortmund

Anfang des Jahres hatte ich auf dem Blog bereits über meine Graffiti-Tour in Bochum berichtet. Das hat mir so viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich mich dazu entschieden habe, Dortmund in Bezug auf Street Art mal genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Direkt in den Kopf gekommen ist mir dabei das Kreativquartier Unionviertel in Dortmund, welches stadtnah im Dortmunder Westen gelegen ist und viele Galerien und eben auch Graffitis hat. Los ging es also an einem Sonntagmorgen am Dortmunder U – insgesamt solltet Ihr ein bis zwei Stunden für die Tour einplanen, je nachdem wie lange Ihr an den einzelnen Stationen stehen bleiben wollt.

Startpunkt der Tour: Das Dortmund U

Eine grobe Übersicht über die Graffitis in Dortmund findet Ihr auf dieser Street Art Map . Allerdings sind einige Graffitis dort nicht abgebildet und an manchen Stellen gibt es neue Motive zu entdecken. Als groben Leitfaden fand ich sie aber sehr hilfreich.

Startpunkt: Das Dortmunder U

Das erste übergroße Graffiti

Das erste Graffiti, in der Künstlerszene Mural genannt, findet ihr direkt am Startpunkt. Ein übergroßes Motiv ziert hier eine Hauswand und leuchtet mir an diesem eher tristen Vormittag entgegen. Zu sehen ist eine urbane Skyline im comicartigen Stil mit Phantasie-Figuren belebt.

Zu zweit machen Graffiti-Touren mehr Spaß

Ich bin heute übrigens nicht allein unterwegs, unterstützt werde ich von einer wahren Kunstkennerin: Meiner Hündin. Der Vorteil – wir sind uns über meine Interpretation der Kunstwerke recht schnell einig. Es lohnt sich übrigens auch einen kurzen Zwischenstopp am Dortmunder U einzulegen. Die fliegenden Bilder direkt unter dem bekannten Wahrzeichen sind immer ein Hingucker und rund um das Gebäude stehen verschiedene Kunstinstallationen.

Ein neues, dystopisches Graffiti am Dortmunder U

Dieses Mural ist ganz neu und Ihr findet es, wenn Ihr auf die andere Seite des Dortmunder Us wechselt. Ich denke, dieses Kunstwerk warnt davor, wie sich unsere Welt durch digitale Transformation negativ verändern könnte. Was ist Eure Interpretation? Wenn Ihr dem kleinen Weg rechts von dem Parkplatz folgt, kommt Ihr wenige Meter weiter zum nächsten Graffiti, welches ein ganz anders Thema hat.

Auf versteckten Pfaden: Street Art in Dortmund

Etwas versteckt hinter einigen Bäumen, seht Ihr hier Nelson Mandela mit dem Zitat: „Was im Leben zählt, ist nicht, dass wir gelebt haben. Sondern, wie wir das Leben von anderen verändert haben.“ Ein ziemlich cooles Graffiti, welches mich beim Weiterlaufen nachdenklich stimmt. Nur ungefähr 50 Meter weiter findet Ihr das nächste Mural, welches von brasilianischen Künstlern kreiert wurde. Der Stil ist ein ganz anderer, das Graffiti spielt mit Farben und Formen.

Einmal abbiegen und weiter geht’s

Weitere Routenempfehlung: Wechselt die Straßenseite und folgt der Adlerstraße. Hier lohnt es sich auch immer mal wieder einen Abstecher in die Nebenstraßen zu machen: In der Sudermannstraße findet Ihr beispielsweise etwas versteckt das Mural mit dem Namen „Seht selbst“, welches einer meiner Favoriten bei der Tour ist. In der Falkenstraße sind besonders viele Hausfassaden mit Street Art verziert, unter anderen ist dort an einer Stelle die Grinsekatze aus Alice im Wunderland versteckt. Am Ende der Adlerstraße biegt Ihr links ab und folgt der Langen Straße wieder Richtung Dortmunder U.

Tierische Street Art zum Ende der Tour

Bei meiner Graffiti-Tour in Bochum hatte ich bereits über den riesigen Wal und überdimensional große Flamingos gestaunt. Auch in Dortmund durfte der Künstler Dennis Klatt an mehreren Stellen zur Farbdose greifen. Auf der Tour lauft Ihr zunächst an einem Wal vorbei, der vom Stil her dem Bochumer Wal auf jeden Fall ähnelt. Einige Meter weiter fällt mir direkt eine riesige Blaumeise ins Auge, die ebenfalls aus seiner Dose stammt.

Langsam neigt sich meine Graffiti-Tour dem Ende zu: Zwei sehr große und schöne Murals findet Ihr in der Nähe vom Dortmunder U und lauft auch automatisch daran vorbei, wenn Ihr der Langen Straße weiter folgt.

Die letzten beiden Graffitis findet Ihr in der Humboldtstraße. Nach rund zwei Stunden habe ich beschlossen, dass ich eine Stärkung brauche und einen kleinen Zwischenstopp bei Kugelpudel einlege. Das ist eine Eisdiele mit sehr leckerem Eis – viele Eissorten sind übrigens auch vegan!

Zum Abschluss der Tour genieße ich Eis und Kaffee auf den Stufen des Dortmunder U. Die Sonne hat sich in der Zwischenzeit auch rausgetraut. Es war ein ziemlicher cooler Tag in einem spannenden Viertel, in dem es wahnsinnig viel zu entdecken gibt.

Echte Liebe: Stadionspaziergang im Dortmunder Stadion

Schon von außen ein imposanter Anblick

Ein echtes Wahrzeichen der Stadt Dortmund und Heimat vieler Fußballfans: Ein Besuch des Dortmunder Stadions stand schon lange auf meiner To-Do Liste. Umso mehr habe ich mich gefreut, als ich vor einigen Wochen gesehen habe, dass der BVB aktuell Corona-konforme Spaziergänge anbietet.

Los geht’s mit dem Stadionspaziergang

Es hängt zwar immer von der aktuellen Inzidenz ab, aber sobald diese unter 100 liegt, können Besucher und Besucherinnen Slots buchen und auf eigene Faust einen Rundgang durch’s Stadion machen. Keine Angst, verlaufen könnt ihr Euch nicht, denn alles ist gut ausgeschildert und im Zweifelsfall weisen Euch freundliche Ordner*innen den Weg.

Bestes Wetter, beeindruckende Fotokulisse

Kurzerhand habe ich mir einen Slot gebucht und los geht’s mit dem Stadionspaziergang. Ich finde es richtig spannend, alleine durch dieses riesige Stadion zu laufen: Eine super Fotokulisse übrigens auch für Hobby-Fotografen und Fotografinnen, denn man hat die Möglichkeit, an einzelnen Punkten zu verweilen. Es gibt verschiedene QR-Codes, die Ihr mit Eurem Handy auslesen könnt und ihr bekommt auf diesem Weg Infos über das Stadion und den Verein.

Leere Ränge und ein exklusiver Blick hinter die Kulissen

Ein etwas trauriger Anblick die eingepackten Sitze

Ich folge den Markierungen auf dem Boden und komme so in die Kabine der Spieler, die ehrlich gesagt ziemlich unspektakulär aussieht – könnte auch die Kabine der Turnhalle der Schule um die Ecke sein.

Nur die kleinen Autogrammkarten der Spieler direkt neben den Haken weisen darauf hin, dass sich hier sonst die Dortmunder Fußball-Elite auf das Spiel vorbereitet.

Noch ein Tunnel und drei Stufen bis zum Spielfeld

Weiter geht es Richtung Spielfeld: Ich laufe eine Treppe runter und stehe plötzlich in dem Tunnel, welcher zum Spielfeld führt. Nur drei Stufen trennen mich dann noch von dem großen Auftritt. Aber ich entscheide mich doch lieber am Spielfeldrand Platz zu nehmen. Der Rasen darf sowieso nicht betreten werden, er ist nämlich sehr empfindlich.

Letzte Station: Das Stadion-Gefängnis

Kurz bevor ich den Spaziergang durch’s Stadion beende, kann ich noch einen Ort besuchen, der den Fans im Normalfall verborgen bleibt: Das Stadion-Gefängnis. Bis zu 30 Personen können hier im Ernstfall festgehalten werden. Heute ist aber alles leer und ich gehe weiter, bis ich wieder am Startpunkt der Tour lande.

Eher unspektakulär – das Stadiongefängnis

Urban Hiking: Wanderung entlang der Emscher

Dortmund mal von einer anderen Seiten entdecken – das war die Idee, als ich mir die Wanderung, die im Dortmunder Westen startet und über den Emscherweg bis nach Deusen führt, ausgesucht habe. Die Strecke ist rund 9 Kilometer lang und wir waren mit Pausen bei schönstem Frühlingswetter etwas mehr als drei Stunden unterwegs.

Zu unserer Wandergruppe gehören heute meine Schwester und mein Hund, weil es sich zusammen doch am besten läuft.

Der hübsche Tremoniapark liegt etwas versteckt im Dortmunder Westen und ist der Startpunkt der Wanderung. Von dort geht es zunächst entlang der Straße Richtung B1 und über die Schnettkerbrücke.

Am Ende der Brücke führt Euch eine Treppe in eine Schrebergartensiedlung und von dort kommt Ihr gut auf dem Emscherweg . Die Schrebergärten strahlen richtige Ruhrpottidylle aus und zeigen wie eng Stadt und Natur in dieser Region miteinander verbunden sind.

Die Strecke ist gut ausgeschildert

Auf dem ersten Teil der Wanderung lauft ihr abseits der Straße und könnt zwischendurch immer mal wieder einen Blick auf die Emscher erhaschen, die etwas versteckt rechts im Flussbett fließt.

Der Weg ist sehr gut ausgeschildert und insbesondere wenn Ihr mal die Straße überqueren müsst, zeigen Euch die blau-weißen Schilder und Markierungen immer, wo es weitergeht.

Obwohl wir bei unserer Wanderung optimales Frühlingswetter haben, sind wir auf vielen Teilen des Weges allein unterwegs, was uns sehr gut gefällt. Der Weg ist nicht überall gleich gut ausgebaut und zum Teil recht schmal, doch vorbeikommende Radler und Radlerinnen nehmen viel Rücksicht. Wir stoppen unterwegs immer mal wieder, weil wir etwas entdecken, was uns interessiert.

Hier führt der Weg entlang der Straße

Als wir in Dorstfeld ankommen, verändert sich die Wegeführung etwas: Rechts vom Weg ist zwar immer noch sehr grün, links liegt dafür aber die Straße. Uns stört das nicht weiter, auch wenn nun ab und an mal ein Auto vorbeirauscht. Schließlich laufen wir ein Stück durch das Hafenviertel, bis wir wieder auf den Emscherweg kommen.

Kurze Auszeit und Stärkung direkt am Wasser

Von hier aus machen wir einen kleinen Abstecher und laufen entlang des Dortmund-Ems-Kanal in Richtung der Halde Deusenberg. Wir finden es hier so schön, dass wir uns spontan entscheiden, eine Pause einzulegen und den Ausblick ein bisschen zu genießen.

Letzter Halt: Der Deusenberg

Der schöne Ausblick bei dem guten Wetter ist am Ende der Tour eine tolle Belohnung. Es war wirklich eine stadtnahe Wanderung, die viel Abwechslung zu bieten hat und richtig Spaß gemacht hat.

Drei Spaziergänge in Dortmund: Mein Fazit

Es waren drei sehr unterschiedliche Touren und alle von ihnen waren auf ihre Art wirklich spannend und haben etwas Abwechslung in den Alltag gebracht. Sehr cool, vielen Dank! Ich fahre nächste Woche erstmals nach Dortmund und stelle mir gerade mein Programm zusammen. Gibt’s irgendwas, was man unbedingt gesehen haben muss, das aber nicht in jedem Reiseführer steht? Warum muss ich mich in Komoot anmelden, wenn ich die gpx-Daten herunter laden möchte. Meines Wissens gibt es einen Wanderrouten-Planer NRW, der hervorragend funktioniert. Dort kann ich die gpx-Daten laden, ohne mich erneut in einem kommerziellen Routenplaner an zu melden. Slowly, attitudes are changing toward a long-controversial form of art: in many cities, street art has evolved from an annoying graffiti on facades to a lively means of expression that many cities are proud of. Of course, it depends on which artist was at work - and how well he mastered his job. Five examples of successful street art culture in NRW .

Dortmund: making do instead of spilling the beans.

If you talk about street art in Dortmund, you can't get past them: Olaf Ginzel and Daniela Bekemeier have been running the 44309streetgallery for several years and have put Dortmund on the map of the international mural scene. Their goal of bringing graffiti artists from all over the world to Dortmund to have them design the largest possible buildings there has worked out. More than twenty huge, yes: enormous murals have been created in and around Dortmund's Union district alone. The most famous and largest so far: the pink-grey HYPE lettering on the parking lot of the subway tower, designed by Dortmund's Mark Gmehling. But also Super Bruno by the Spaniard Belin in Langenstraße - the portrait of a young man between Green Batman and Harlequin - is an impressive testimony to the radiance of good street art. Olaf Ginzel and Daniela Bekemeier have put together a public space map with the help of Google Maps so that people who are not familiar with Dortmund can find their way around the Unionviertel right away: A map with 18 different works by renowned artists. What they have in common: they are big! The final word and a kind of mission statement on the subject comes from the makers of 44309streetgallery, we don't want to withhold it from you: "Street art is everything between actionism and pop startum, between street and cinema, between jail and museum."

Cologne-Ehrenfeld: Follow the route

Six kilometers of colorful life, or, borrowing a Sponti saying from the seventies: On the facades lies the beach... In Cologne-Ehrenfeld, the Cologne sprayer scene has developed a kind of six-kilometer-long street art route that begins at Liebigstraße and ends at Leyendeckerstraße. There you can see oversized plush donuts, a convertible pulled into the air by purple brause angels, or the graffiti "All cats are bastards" by MEOW - among others. By the way, MEOW is a Cologne street artist who has been active in the graffiti scene for several years - under different names. Like his probably most famous colleague Banksy, who just recently caused a worldwide sensation with his charitable Corona Piece, he has long since developed his own signature: Cat content once avant-garde. Some other highlights in Ehrenfeld's street art cosmos: the Cologne artist collective Captain Borderline has sprayed an impressive monument to the historic Edelweiss Pirates at the corner of Venloer and Schönsteinstraße. Mr. Trash, alias Christian Böhmer, on the other hand, is more contemporary and took aim at the "cell phone idiot" at the corner of Marienstrasse and Hackländerstrasse. His work "Fallen Angel" shows two cell phone tippers with paper bags over their heads. Finally, the portrait of the lady who embellishes the work of the Berliner El Bocho at the Ehrenfelder Bahndamm is poppy: "I miss my Plattenbau" it says and is probably meant ironically. But who knows. That street art in Cologne is now also taken seriously and appreciated by the bourgeoisie, is shown by the way Rhein-Energie deals with the creativity of local sprayers: the artist and self-proclaimed vagrant Fietse Nowitzki is allowed to paint in Cologne now officially beautify power boxes from Rhein Energie. Krefeld: Sprays in the wood

Is this still street art or can it be the natural way to integrate new art forms into our everyday life? As an attempt to combine the themes of nature, culture and economy, the "Wood Art Gallery" was launched in 2015 as part of the "Krefeld Change of Perspective" program. The works of art, which were created five years ago by 20 street artists from around the world in a short period of time, can still be viewed today - even if nature is slowly taking possession of them again. To do so, however, you have to make a pilgrimage to the site of the former Carstanjen cement factory in Krefeld, because here - in the midst of wasteland and small paths - the street artists have individually transformed the concrete artifacts left behind by the Carstanjen company, which were once so drab and unadorned. From the house facade to the concrete tube, a transformation of the creative kind. The fact that such an idea can also be an attractive way to maneuver Street Art into the (predominantly positive) consciousness of a broad population has been impressively proven here in Krefeld. The best example is the yellow "iron snake" entitled "Yellow Submarine" by the American self-taught artist Anat Ronen: One has rarely seen a concrete block shine more colorfully and cheerfully. Düsseldorf: Pretty in colors

That's the way to do it! Where elsewhere often laboriously search for traces of exciting Street art a Düsseldorf native takes the fans of this young art genre by the hand: Klaus Rosskothen invented the Urban Art Walk , a two-hour tour past the exhibits of various street artists in the Bilk and Friedrichstadt districts of Düsseldorf. He is also curator and founder of the gallery Pretty Portal , which deals with all facets of street art, he knows: "Sure, Düsseldorf is in the matter of Urban Art not yet comparable with major metropolises, but it's getting more and more." In Bilk and Friedrichstadt, works by Jana&JS, FinDAC, Pixelpancho or L.E.T. in particular characterize the city's fresh streetscape, while in Flingern it's Düsseldorf artist Klaus Klinger with his group Color fever . He is a veteran of the scene: in the context of the legalization of a formerly "squatted living space" in the Kiefernstraße in Flingern, Germany, he put Color fever implemented an innovative street art concept: The houses that had been occupied since 1980 - and only those with odd numbers - were decorated with striking graffiti under Klinger's direction. In the meantime, Kiefernstraße has become a much-visited meeting place for people who are interested in the somewhat different, more colorful Düsseldorf interest. Or as one newspaper wrote: "Kiefernstraße is the perfect counter-design to the posh Königsallee." Take that as a compliment and stop by. Even if Color fever -founder Klaus Klinger, formerly a student of Gerhard Richter, doesn't see Pine Street at the end of its rope yet: "If the houses on Pine Street could one day be completely designed, that would be great." Paderborn: Info from the sprayer doc

In Paderborn, people seem to be quite content, says Sven Niemann, because one rarely encounters rebellious or political statements on the walls of the Westphalian city. Instead, there are colorful comic cows, a colorful Ferris wheel or sometimes a melancholy, artistic woman's face. Niemann - a member of Generation Arts, which brings together people from Paderborn's art and culture scene - knows his way around this form of art. A linguist by training, he is not only writing his doctoral thesis on the subject of "graffiti," he is also the official city guide in the cathedral city for this topic. After a test session attracted more than 100 interested listeners, the two-hour graffiti tour is now a permanent feature of the tourist offer in Paderborn. Sven Niemann knows: More than 20 sprayers work in Paderborn, mainly on the Busdorf wall and in the Riemke district. And even CDU city councilor Grabenstroer thinks the graffiti in his city is great and revealed to the local newspaper: "The graffiti behind the Paderhalle in the Paderquell area are still very young and yet in the social networks already something like the landmarks of the city." On his tour, Sven Niemann explains to his guests which stylistic devices sprayers use, what their tags (signatures) mean and where sprayers are allowed to apply paint in the first place. After all, not every location is suitable for this form of decoration, and not every building owner is happy about the colorful images on his buildings. Although Niemann thinks that good graffiti would definitely enrich the cityscape: "There are still an awful lot of gray walls in Paderborn!" Read more here

Street Art to amaze

City stroll with gi­ant graf­fiti and small works of art.

Interesting art can be found even outside of the museums in NRW: large-scale works and small eye-catchers are scattered outside in the streets of large metropolises and smaller towns alike. Many different artists, art forms, and design techniques turn public space into an open-air gallery. Guided street-art tours not only warrant discovery of ever-new pieces of art that often present societally relevant subjects, but also introduce some of the lesser known corners of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Paderborn, and Dortmund.

Düs­sel­dorf

Visiting the state capital, you will find art everywhere, be it on foot, by bicycle, or in the underground network. The artistically designed stations of the Wehrhahn line  or the large “Hornet” mural at the Museum K20  are only two pieces proving that art has become part of public life in Düsseldorf . The most recent example is the “Pretty Wall Bilk” project that turned an underpass into a public art gallery with the help of some international artists. The biennial “40° Urban Art” festival is also adding new works to bridge or building façades every time, as it will do once again in its next edition in 2023.

A current overview of Düsseldorf’s street art is provided by regular Urban Art Walks through the inner city. They include some background information on the creation of the works, the artists, and some brief insights into Düsseldorf’s city history. Co­logne

Cologne has some creative street art to offer at every corner, as made certain not least by the biennial CityLeaks Urban Art Festival . The most renowned festival of its kind in NRW, it brings about new works every time. Some of them have long become photogenic landmarks in their own rights. Some quarters have developed into veritable street-art hot spots. One example is Ehrenfeld, which sports the greatest density of large murals in Cologne. Nippes is a particular treat for fans of graffiti, while Mülheim on the right side of the river Rhine has been compared to a famous scene quarter in Berlin before: “Tomorrow’s Mülheim is like yesterday’s Prenzlauer Berg,” Cologne street artist Tim Ossege, aka seiLeise, who grew up in Mülheim, has said. 

Regular street art tours lead past the cathedral city’s particularly creatively designed quarters, offering a more detailed introduction of both the artists and their works. Pader­born

Street art and the catholic church are very close to each other in Paderborn: Following an initiative of the General Superior of the Vincentine Sisters in Paderborn, graffiti artists have designed one of the monastery’s walls, applying more than 100 metres of graffiti art to turn the wall, called the “Busdorfgalerie”, into one of the city’s photogenic sights . The Secret City Festival , with national and international sprayers meeting up to redesign façades within the city every summer, has ensured the annual addition of further works since 2021. Even science is covering graffiti in Paderborn: The “Informationssystem Graffiti in Deutschland” (INGRID), located at the university, is tackling systematic exploration of graffiti inventories in the Federal Republic. Brightly coloured city jungles may be thriving in many places in the Ruhr area, but street art is particularly colourful in Dortmund , where the Unionviertel quarter constitutes a vibrant hot spot with its many large murals. The 44309 Street Art Gallery is part of it, not only offering urban art for the living room at home, but also inviting graffiti artists from around the world now and then to design façades in the city. Another site here is the Dortmunder U , a cultural centre, observation tower, and city landmark that serves at the starting and end point of guided street art tours and contains the Unionviertel quarter’s namesake: The building used to house the fermenting and storage cellars of the Union Brauerei brewery until the 1990s.
