Best time to visit mozambique.
June to August is considered the best period to visit as the weather is cooler and drier. Later in the dry season (in late August and September) the temperatures start to climb, but this is the best time to see big game and enjoy the sunshine on the coast. The best time for bird watching is early in the rainy season, which usually runs from November to December.
Geography and Environment
Located in Southern Africa , Mozambique shares land borders with Malawi , South Africa , Tanzania , Zambia , Zimbabwe and Swaziland . The eastern side of the country runs along the Indian Ocean, giving Mozambique plenty of coast line crucial for recreation, trade, tourism and the fishing industry. Inland, mountainous terrain extends along the western and northern borders with the Limpopo and the Zambezi Rivers running through the country into the sea.
Top 5 Coastal Pursuits in Mozambique
1. scuba diving.
Home to perennially warm waters, pristine coral reefs and a wide variety of marine life, Mozambique is one of Africa's best spots to dive. Explore the archipelago and find exquisite tropical fish, graceful rays, rare dugongs and (if you're lucky), colossal whale sharks.
2. Snorkeling
Travelers not into diving don't have to miss out on the underwater wonders, as snorkeling opens an exhilarating (and often cheaper) window into the colorful creations that live under the waterline.
3. Beach Football
Like most African countries, the locals of Mozambique love a game of football. It won't be hard to find a casual game of beach football on the coast of Mozambique and local kids are usually happy to have a traveler or two join in.
Taking to Mozambique's crystalline seas aboard a traditional dhow is one of the more mellow ways to enjoy the coast. Laze on deck, take in the sun and scenery and watch the islands glide by, just as locals have done for centuries.
5. Sandboarding
Forget the ocean for a while and experience a wild ride on Mozambique's dunes. Sandboarding is comparable to snowboarding and with Mozambique possessing some enormous dunes, this is a top spot for experienced and novice boarders to get some thrills.

Is tipping customary in Mozambique?
Although tipping isn't customary in Mozambique, establishments in tourist areas like Maputo are increasingly accepting (and expecting) tips. Mozambique Tours & Safari Packages
Mozambique’s main draw are the countless paradisiacal palm-fringed beaches that line its 2,600km/1,616mi Indian Ocean coastline and innumerable offshore islands. Serviced by some first-class luxury resorts, it is the perfect country for a relaxing beach holiday, as well as for more active marine pursuits such as snorkeling, diving and coastal safaris. Inland, Mozambique’s national parks and reserves were once major attractions, but a prolonged civil war that ended in 1992 left them poached out and depleted of wildlife. Despite this, recent rehabilitation efforts mean that some of these little-visited parks are now slowly emerging as worthwhile goals for adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-track safari experience.

6 Questions About Mozambique Tours
Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.
Why should I go to Mozambique?
“There are plenty of reasons to go to Mozambique. With its endlessly long, unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is the ultimate beach destination. The picture-perfect setting of turquoise waters lapping on white sandy beaches fringed by swaying palm trees is like a dream come true. The marine life is phenomenal. You’ll have the opportunity to dive or snorkel with shoals of colorful fish zigzagging around the beautiful coral reefs. Or you can take a boat trip further offshore to get close to dolphins and whales. Real adventure enthusiasts might want to swim with whale sharks. Meeting the local Mozambicans is easy; these laid-back people love to welcome visitors to their piece of paradise. Go back in time with them on a traditional dhow cruise, check out the art deco Portuguese-influenced architecture, or dance the night away in one of Maputo’s edgy nightclubs. Whatever rocks your boat, don’t walk away without tasting the many tantalizing Mozambican dishes, especially the famous LM prawns.”
Where should I go in Mozambique?
“There is no shortage of stunning beaches in Mozambique. The most popular resort towns are in the south of the country. Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost extremity of Mozambique, is usually visited from South Africa and is a great place for diving and fishing. Nearby Maputo Special Reserve is a sanctuary for an estimated 450 to 500 coastal elephants. Nature-lovers will enjoy the bush-and-beach combo in a pristine protected environment. Other resort towns further north include Xai-Xai, Bilene, Tofo and Vilankulo. The latter is perhaps the biggest tourist hub in Mozambique. You’ll find lots of activities available here, including boat trips to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago where you’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling and diving reefs in the country. While you can visit these reefs from mainland Mozambique, staying on one of the archipelago’s islands is a more exclusive option. With several luxury lodges to choose from, the islands are ideal for a romantic getaway. More remote and less developed is the string of islands in the north, known as Quirimbas Archipelago. As is the case further south, the main attractions are the beaches and the marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and a magnificent coral reef with associated fish. Aside from these natural wonders, you’ll get a taste of the country’s turbulent history with historical landmarks, such as the old Portuguese fort on Ibo Island.”
Can I extend my African safari with a trip to Mozambique?
“Although Mozambique has plenty to offer for a stand-alone holiday, it is also the perfect companion to a safari in East or southern Africa. It is very easy to add some days in Mozambique to a South Africa safari, for example. Connections are usually good from Kenya and Tanzania, though you might need an extra flight hop. There are few beaches in East and southern Africa that can really compete with the islands of Mozambique as idyllic destinations. The water is always warm, the reefs protect the shore from big waves, the marine life is incredibly varied and the islands are totally unspoiled. It is no surprise that you’ll find some of the most exquisite lodges here. They cater to families, newlyweds, adventure enthusiasts and people wanting to just get away from it all for a couple of days.”
Which parks should I visit on a Mozambique safari?
“While Mozambique is mostly rated as a beach destination, it has some parks and reserves worth visiting too. None of these parks competes with the top safari destinations in the likes of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. However, if you’re looking for a bit of an off-the-beaten-track adventure, they have a lot to offer. Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the Rift Valley, incorporates a great variety of landscapes and habitats, including lakes, savannahs, woodland, mountains and rainforest. You’re likely to see elephants and plenty of antelope species here, and lions are making a strong comeback too. Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave National Parks all form part of Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation initiative that also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park. Limpopo NP is the most regularly visited of Mozambique’s inland parks, but most of this traffic is merely in transit between Kruger and the Mozambican coast. And while Limpopo is home to all of the Big Five, wildlife densities are very low, partly due to a lack of permanent water. The recently rehabilitated Zinave NP, by contrast, is an off-the-beaten gem where you stand a good chance of spotting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and white rhino, along with a wide variety of antelope. Predators that prowl Zinave include lion and leopard but densities are low and sightings very rare. Set along the far south coast of Mozambique, Maputo National Park is home to elephant, zebra, hippo and several species of antelope. This scenic park now incorporates several oceanfront lodges that offer a truly special bush-and-beach experience.”
What is the best time of the year for a holiday in Mozambique and/or a Mozambique safari?
“The tropical climate of Mozambique makes it suitable as a beach destination throughout the year. However, the months of December to March can be very wet and torrential rains are not uncommon over this period. Underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is best from April to June and from September to November, when the sea tends to be calm. The dry months from July to October are best for wildlife viewing. At this time animals congregate around lakes and rivers and the thinning bush makes spotting easier.”
How much will this tour cost?
“There are several variables determining the price of a Mozambique tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a tour package to cost around US$300 to US$500 per person per day. The level of accommodation is the biggest factor. Most beach resorts fall in the mid-range to luxury span, but there are a few budget options as well. If you’re looking for a tour visiting several places in the country, you might need some internal flights, which will add to the price. When available, a group tour might be more cost-effective than a private tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

While Mozambique is slowly becoming a staple of the safari scene, it’s still largely considered one of Africa’s untapped gems. As the birthplace of the famous walking safari and a whole host of other ecotourist pursuits, a Mozambique tourist guide is quick to extoll the virtues of this country’s off-the-beaten-track appeal, where lion spotting and cheetah chasing can still be done in quietude. In the northern climes of the country, the curious inselberg peaks and lush floodplains of the Lugenda basin represent one of the premier safari spots (famed for its remoteness and wildness), while the Gorongosa National Park at the centre is a perfect example of a Rift Valley habitat. But it’s not all about safari-going here, and today Mozambique offers a host of other touristic activities. Beach lovers can opt for a spot of diving in the pristine waters of Quirimbas or Bazaruto, or sunbathing on the majestic Tofo coast, while city-lovers shouldn’t miss a stroll down the cobbled streets of the Ilha de Moçambique, or a coffee break at one of the lively cafes in the colonial downtown of Maputo.

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” – Christopher McDougall

Discover the Highlights of Mozambique
Off the east coast of Mozambique you will find the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park . Often described as one of the most spectacular destinations on earth because it is paradise for marine life. So relish in the opportunity to either snorkel or scuba dive off the coast and swim close to dolphins, manta rays and whale sharks. While offshore you can explore small islands where turtles come ashore to nest.
Although Portuguese is the official language, English is often spoken along with Swahili, Makhuwa and Sena.
Pemba lies on the coast and is popular for water sports and diving. Coral reefs are close to the shore so they are perfect to explore. In the center of Pemba you will find an authentic local market. Here talented tradesmen and women sell traditional art, crafts and silverware.
Our Mozambique Tours offer the best routes for your amazing journey while traveling on a Mozambique Safari.
Quirimbas Archipelago
While some areas are rustic with poor roads, Quirimbas Archipelago in the north of Mozambique is tropical bliss. Either wade in warms waters or hike through mangroves during low tide. Brace yourself for friendly, energetic local children who are dying to meet and play with you!
Bazaruto Island
Bazaruto is an island situated around 80 kilometers southeast of the Save River mouth. It is the biggest island in the entire Bazaruto Archipelago. While it’s crystal clear waters make it the most popular tourist destination in Mozambique.
As a result, the islands of Bazaruto are a paradise getaway. Furthermore they offer a wide range of private accommodation. Tranquil sunsets and solitude are typical of your time spent on the Bazaruto islands. Travelers can enjoy pristine and uncrowded beaches which are fringed with palm trees swaying in the breeze . In contrast to moments of relaxation, there are a range of exciting activities to enjoy. These include superb bird-watching and fantastic diving and snorkeling. An exhilarating fishing trip is also popular with many visitors.
Tours to Bazaruto Island
The archipelago has earned its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Boats are the only means of transport between the islands thereby preserving the integrity of the sealife.
The coral reefs and sparkling waters offer some of the finest diving in the world. Dive sites are not crowded and as a result the sea life is diverse and plentiful. Some sites reach up to 30 meters deep with amazing visibility. Diving here you will see sheltered reefs brimming with dolphins, humpback whales, whale sharks, manta rays and turtles.
Also known as ‘Terre de Boa Gente’ meaning Land of Good People, the city of Inhambane is in the south of Mozambique. While 470 kilometers northeast of Maputo, the town is quiet and rich in history. It was the southernmost port which the Arabs used for the slave trading industry. Vasco da Gama visited the area in 1498 and claimed Inhambane Bay for Portugal. This then led to the Portuguese creating a trading post here in 1534. Yet in the 20th century, Maputo became the primary center of Mozambique. As a result Inhambane’s status weakened and the town’s economy suffered.
The city now contains a museum and bustling market. The main market or ‘Mercado Central’ is along the central avenue. At the market you can buy local produce including spices and vegetables along with fresh prawns, fish and cashew nuts. The province is the second largest cashew producer after Nampula and also grows coconut and citrus fruit trees.
Praia do Tofo
Praia do Tofo is commonly known as ‘Tofo’ and is in the south-eastern region of Mozambique. While only a small town, it is also a huge tourist attraction. This coastal town on the Indian Ocean is only 22 kilometers from the city of Inhambane. It is a popular destination with plenty of beach villas and stunning scenery along it’s shoreline. Tofo is also home to diving retreats, drawing travelers to it’s beautiful reefs which are rich with marine life.
The people of Tofo are friendly and hospitable and in addition the town has vibrant night life with great restaurants. On your Mozambique Safari you can go diving and snorkeling with incredible sea life. These include Manta Rays and Sea Turtles. Tofo is also one of the finest destinations for divers to spot Whale Sharks.
Activities on Mozambique Tours
Mozambique has the best fishing of the Eastern Indian Ocean. As a result it has become a top destination for Marlin fishing. The season runs from early October until the end of January. Bazaruto Archipelago also offer saltwater fly-fishing for you to try your hand at catching a prized bonefish.
Professional scuba diving and snorkeling operators offer you the chance to further explore the coast . Off the shores of Inhambane you will find the world-renowned Manta Reef and Galleria. These diving spots have Giant Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Turtles and other thriving sealife to discover.
Experience sailing in a traditional dhow around the Archipelago. These islands offer gorgeous azure waters, bronzed beaches lined with palm trees and untouched coral reefs.
Weather in Mozambique
Mozambique has a tropical climate with lovely sunshine throughout the year. Average temperatures are around 28°C to 32°C which makes it a perfect holiday destination to enjoy outdoor activities. The rainy season is from November to April yet it still remains hot and humid especially during December and February . In contrast inland is slightly cooler with heavier rainfall mostly during January and March .
However the Southern regions of Mozambique are prone to cyclones. So during the months of January and February the region experiences torrential downpours . Hence the Bazaruto Archipelago is best avoided during the cyclone season.
May to November is the Winter season. Travel during this time if you prefer the cooler temperatures of 15 to 21 degrees Celsius. Game viewing in Mozambique is also ideal during the dry season particularly from August to September . As the vegetation thins out you will have greater visibility as animals congregate around the rivers and waterholes .

Why Travel to Mozambique ? by Luke Hardiman
Mozambique is first and foremost an ideal beach destination. A trip to Mozambique is not complete without visiting the tropical islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago or the pristine sandy beaches along the east coast. Popular activities include scuba diving at some of the world’s best dive sites , as well as snorkelling, fishing, surfing and horse riding .
Most safaris to Mozambique also incorporate a bush experience, visiting the untamed Transfrontier Peace Park and/or the Maputo Elephant Reserve . The wilderness areas of Mozambique are wild and rugged, making for a real African adventure . You also get to experience Mozambique’s rich culture and colonial past in the towns and cities visited on the Mozambique safaris, as well as the exotic cuisine and abundant fresh seafood of this beautiful country.

Mozambique beckons with its coastline and swaying palms, its traditions, its cultures, its vibe and its opportunities for adventure. This enigmatic southeast African country is well off most travelers' maps, but it has much to offer those who venture here: long, dune-fringed beaches, turquoise waters abounding in shoals of colorful fish, well-preserved corals, remote archipelagos in the north, pounding surf in the south and graceful dhows with billowing sails. Add to this colonial-style architecture, pulsating nightlife, a fascinating cultural mix and vast tracts of bush. Discovering these attractions is not always easy, but it is unfailingly rewarding. Bring along patience, a tolerance for long bus rides, some travel savvy and a sense of adventure, and jump in for the journey of a lifetime.

What to Do in Mozambique: A 10-Day Mozambique Travel Itinerary
This post may contain affiliate links. I may earn a small commission if you click through them, at no extra cost to you.
Looking for what to do in Mozambique? Read on for my 10-day Mozambique travel itinerary based on my recent visit to the pearl of the Indian Ocean, with everything you need to know to start planning your own trip right now.
Mozambique has been in my imagination for a long time. This year I finally fulfilled my curiosity for this fascinating southeast African country. And the reason could not be better: the wedding of one of my closest friends, which prompted an unexpected reunion with my girlfriends from college. We are spread over the world now, so getting together in Mozambique made this trip very special.
But I’m not going to lie: this trip was also, in some ways, the hardest I’ve ever taken. Mozambique is among the poorest countries in the world, and the poorest I’ve ever visited. The poverty and inequality were a punch in the stomach and, at the same time, a wake-up call.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. Quite the contrary. Mozambique is also a country of kind and resilient people, with a rich and captivating culture, delicious food, and breathtaking beauty. A country with a lot to offer to whom is willing to truly see it, and learn from it.
Table of Contents
When to visit Mozambique
Generally speaking, the best time of the year to visit Mozambique is from May to November, during the cooler dry season. From December to April, the wet summer season brings higher temperatures and rain.
I traveled to Mozambique in March and got two days of unstoppable pouring rain at the end of my vacation, when I was expecting to enjoy the beach and the Indian Ocean. Fortunately the next and last two days of my time in Mozambique were much better.
If you don’t want to take any chances with the weather, I’d recommend sticking with the dry season, especially from June to October.
Safety and health in Mozambique
Mozambique is a relatively safe country for travelers. As long as you take normal precautions – don’t leave your belongings unattended on the beach or anywhere else, look out for your bag or pockets on crowded places like markets, and avoid isolated areas, especially at night – you should be all right.
Before traveling to Mozambique, see your doctor or a travel medicine specialist and do the recommended vaccination. Your doctor will also advise you on the best anti-malarial medication for you. Mozambique is a malaria risk country, so it’s important you take malaria tablets before, during and after your trip to prevent the disease. And don’t forget to avoid mosquito bites with the use of a repellent spray.
Finally, do not drink tap water while in Mozambique, but opt for bottled water instead.
Now that you are all set, here’s what to do in Mozambique:
Things to do in Mozambique: a 10-day Mozambique itinerary
Maputo – 2 days.
Maputo is probably not the most beautiful city you’ll ever visit. But that doesn’t mean you should skip it altogether, as I’ve seen recommended on other travel blogs. After all, traveling is not, or shouldn’t be, only about seeing pretty places.
Yes, Maputo can be a little rough around the edges. But as the capital and biggest city of Mozambique, it offers a great opportunity to learn more about the history and present of the country.
Maputo is also the gateway to most of Mozambique’s beach destinations. So take at least two days to explore former Lourenço Marques, as it was called before independence from Portuguese rule in 1975.
Top things to do in Maputo
#1 mafalala walking tour.
Start your visit to Maputo discovering one of its most iconic neighborhoods. Mafalala is a symbol of anti-colonial resistance, and birthplace or once home to some of Mozambique’s most prominent writers, intellectuals, politicians, and athletes.
The guided walking tour with Iverca Association was one of the best experiences I had during my time in Mozambique, and I truly can’t recommend it enough.
#2 Maputo beach
Enjoy a day on the beach, or just stroll along the beachfront avenue for some beautiful views over the Indian Ocean.
#3 Maputo Railway Station
Considered the third most beautiful train station in the world by Time magazine in 2015, Maputo Central Railway Station is definitely worth a visit.
#4 Downtown Maputo
Downton Maputo offers a handful of attractions, including the Maputo Fortress, the Independence Square with its huge Samora Machel (the country’s first president) statue, Maputo’s Cathedral, the Iron House (designed by Gustav Eiffel), and the Tunduru Gardens.
Book a tour of downtown Maputo here .
#5 Feima – crafts, flowers and gastronomy fair
Don’t leave Maputo without some souvenir shopping at Feima. Maputo’s artists and artisans show and sell their unique work here, from batik paintings to wooden handicrafts, from straw bags to the traditional capulanas.
Recommended places to eat in Maputo
I don’t even know where to start when talking about this place. A stunning view over the Maputo Bay, an elegant atmosphere, and delicious Greek-inspired cuisine – Dhow has it all.
This restaurant slash café slash art gallery features unique decoration pieces and artwork from the Asian and African continents, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
Mundo’s is a locals’ favorite, famous for its pizzas and as a meeting point to watch football and rugby. We had dinner here on a Saturday and it was pretty crowded with fans of Portuguese football. The atmosphere is extremely friendly and relaxed, and the pizza very good.
Soul Gourmet
Hidden in a quiet street of the Sommerchield neighborhood, Soul is a restaurant and gourmet store with a healthy and contemporary concept.
Open for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday, it offers delicious daily menus, prepared with local and fresh ingredients. I had the raw salad, with cucumber noodles, white mushrooms, avocado, and mint.
Saturday mornings are time for yoga and brunch. Definitely my kind of place.
Graciana (Feima)
For traditional Mozambique dishes head to Graciana, at Feima. Food is very good here, but you’ll need some patience with the service. Nevertheless, I still recommend eating here for a taste of the local gastronomy.
Considered one of the best restaurants in the city, Zambi is a mandatory stop in your Maputo itinerary. With a wide variety of dishes, from seafood to European cuisine and sushi, great service, and an excellent location on the oceanfront, Zambi doesn’t disappoint.
I chose the tiger prawns and all I can tell you is that they tasted as good as they look.
Where to stay in Maputo
The perfect spot in sommerchield.
We’ve stayed in an amazing Airbnb in the Sommerchield district , the best residential neighborhood in Maputo. This beautiful and very comfortable apartment is perfect for a group or family vacation (we were four adults but there’s space for up to six people). It’s also conveniently located close to restaurants, coffee shops, and several banks.
Disclaimer: we were non-paying guests since my friend owns the apartment, but I wouldn’t include it here if I didn’t think it’s a great option for your stay in Maputo!
Click here for more info and booking.
Polana Serena Hotel
If you’d rather stay in a hotel, Polana Serena is one of the finest in the city. In fact, this historic building is worth visiting even if you don’t stay here. Polana Serena offers 5-star accommodation and a spa.

Kruger National Park, South Africa – 2/3 days
Ok, I know what you might be thinking: Should I include a park in South Africa in a Mozambique travel itinerary? The answer is: Absolutely!
Kruger National Park is the biggest game reserve in South Africa and one of the largest in the African continent. It stretches 360 kilometers on the border with Mozambique, and it’s closer to Maputo than to any major city in South Africa.
Famous worldwide for its wildlife, it offers a great opportunity to spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) and much more.
Taking a safari in Africa is an experience you won’t want to miss, especially being so close.
How to get there
The easiest and cheapest way to get from Maputo to Kruger National Park is to rent a car or hire a private driver. Alternatively, there are also organized day tours to Kruger National Park from Maputo.
We decided to hire a private driver. It took us around three hours, including border crossing procedures, to get to Malalane. This small town is home to one of the main entrances to the park, the Malelane Gate.
Make sure you get a multi-entry visa for Mozambique prior to your travel. This will save you some time and paperwork on your way back. If you’re traveling with a single-entry visa, you can still visit Kruger National Park, but you’ll need to request a border visa when reentering Mozambique.
Doing a safari in Kruger National Park
Shortly after checking in at our lodge in Malalane, we got picked up by Echo Africa Safaris for our afternoon game drive. The next four hours were some of the most exciting of my entire life.
We were lucky enough to get close to elephants, rhinos, impalas, giraffes, a buffalo, and even spot some lions from afar. Observing these wild animals roaming freely in their natural habitat, against the breathtaking landscape of the park, was a moving and unforgettable experience.
The next day we did a morning game drive, before returning to Maputo in the afternoon. This time, though, we were not so lucky.
We saw a couple of elephants and rhinos, zebras, and again some lions from afar, but nothing compared with the natural spectacle of the previous day. We also got stuck with a guide and a tourist couple who were very much into birds, so that’s what we ended up seeing for most of the morning.
Echo Africa Safaris also offer full day game drives, bush walks, and night drives.
Where to stay in Kruger National Park
Kruger view chalets.
We stayed at Kruger View Chalets , an affordable self-catering lodge right outside Kruger National Park. Our chalet had everything we needed for one night: two comfortable bedrooms with en-suite bathroom and AC, lounge, kitchen and patio. There’s also a swimming pool area with a view over the park and Crocodile River, and a restaurant next door, at Rio Vista Lodge .
Malalane has no taxi service, but the reception was kind enough to arrange our transportation to the town center, where you can find a supermarket and several restaurants, at an extra price.
Click here for more info and booking: Booking.com
Pestana Kruger Lodge
For an upscale stay, Pestana Kruger Lodge offers 4-star accommodation, two outdoor swimming pools, one indoor pool, restaurant, two bars, and spa. Located only 150 meters from Malelane Gate, Pestana Kruger Lodge has a deck restaurant and bar overlooking Crocodile River, and a safari company located inside the hotel. Guests can also request a breakfast pack to take on the morning safaris.

Mozambique beaches – 5/6 days
No list of things to do in Mozambique is complete without including its stunning beaches. The country’s vast coastline hides some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa. Think endless stretches of white sand and turquoise waters, with fewer tourists and for much cheaper than other more famous destinations around the world.
I’m including Ponta do Ouro in this Mozambique travel itinerary since that was the only beach town I visited during my 10-day trip. But there are many other options, most of them, reportedly, even more beautiful.
Ponta do Ouro is a small village in the extreme south of the country, close to the border with South Africa, and a popular beach destination among its southern neighbors.
There are no roads here, only sand tracks, and shopping is still limited. A new road connecting Maputo to Ponta do Ouro is being built but its 120 kilometers are not yet completed. For now, this small beach town is only reachable by 4×4 vehicle.
My friends’ wedding was held here, so we spent five days relaxing, enjoying the beach and exploring this (still) hidden gem.
Top things to do in Ponta do Ouro
#1 scuba diving.
Ponta do Ouro is known for its beautiful coral reefs, rich marine life, and clear water, which make it one of the best diving spots in Mozambique.
#2 Swimming with dolphins
Have you ever dreamed of swimming with dolphins? In Ponta do Ouro you can do that in an ethical way, meaning in their natural habitat and without disturbing the animals. Some ocean safaris also include snorkeling and whale watching.
#3 Surfing and kitesurfing
Ponta do Ouro is also a great spot for surfing and kitesurfing, both for beginners and advanced surfers, with several places offering lessons and gear rental.
#4 Shopping
From groceries to art, clothing, jewelry, and handmade crafts, Ponta do Ouro village center is an open-air market made of small wooden stalls and colorful products. There’s also a couple of shops worth paying a visit, like Magenta Moon and Ponki.
#5 Eating and drinking
For such a small village, Ponta do Ouro does have a surprising number of nice restaurants and bars, with a cool and beachy vibe. And what better way to finish a day on the beach than enjoying some fresh food and cold drinks?
Service, on the other hand, can be a little slow and clumsy. But hey, you’re on vacation, so just relax and have fun.
Recommended places to eat in Ponta do Ouro
Love café & deli.
Located right in the center of the village, you can’t possibly miss Love Café when visiting Ponta do Ouro. With its colorful love themed décor and relaxed atmosphere, Love Café is a great choice to grab a bite before heading to the beach or to enjoy the warm African evenings.
We ended up visiting it twice, once for dinner and another time for lunch.
Ponta Beach Bar
If you’re a beach bum who loves being surrounded by surfers and other ocean souls, Ponta Beach Bar is the right place for you. Food and service are ok, although not great. But you come here for the vibe, not the gastronomic experience.
Magenta Moon
Magenta Moon is a quirky café and boutique, with a hippie flair and delicious cakes. Seriously, you ought to try the carrot cake here, before indulging in some shopping.
Café del Mar
Café del Mar was without a doubt the best place we ate at in Ponta do Ouro. Besides the excellent food and service, it offers a privileged view over the village all the way to the ocean. After dark, its cocktail bar turns into a party venue, with chill-out music and a tropical vibe.
Where to stay in Ponta do Ouro
Bougainvilla sol.
This was our second choice in terms of accommodation, and I will definitely stay at BougainVilla Sol if I ever return to Ponta do Ouro. We ended up staying at an Airbnb house that was ok but far from great.
BougainVilla Sol is located just a short 2-minute walk from the beach and the village center. All rooms have private bathroom and AC. The property has also a garden and an outdoor swimming pool.
Other Mozambique beaches worth visiting
Some of the best beaches in Mozambique, and on my personal travel bucket list, include:
- Tofo and Barra in the Inhambane province
- Vilanculos and Bazaruto Archipelago
- Island of Mozambique
There are of course many other things to do and see in Mozambique. But if you’re visiting for the first time, this 10-day Mozambique travel itinerary got you covered.
From history and culture to wildlife and pristine beaches, get ready for a spellbinding trip to an underrated African paradise.

I’m so glad that you enjoyed the Kruger Park and of course, my personal favourite in Mozambique, Ponto do Ouro. In another lifetime I worked as a Dive Master in Ponto for 18 months, it is part of a marine reserve making the scuba diving absolutely splendid with over 21 different reefs in the system to suit every level of diver.

I went to Mozambique for about 2 weeks and I loved it. I haven´t been to Ponta do Ouro but it looks stunningly beautiful. I went to the beaches of Tofu Beach, Xai Xai and Vilanculos. There you can take a boat to even more beautiful beaches of the Bazaruto Archipelago. If you ever visit Mozambique again – check it out. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I enjoyed your post. You supplied good detail about everything a traveler needs to know about visiting Mosambique. Also, I agree that the train station is gorgeous. With people in need, I found it surprising that they created a beautiful train station in a poverty ridden country.

Yes, I’ve read a few articles that say to skip Maputo, but that always feels like a challenge to me! If you dig deep enough you can find beauty (although not necessarily in the aesthetic sense) everywhere. I think you managed to capture it pretty well 🙂
I’ve also heard that Tofu is gorgeous and definitely plan to try and make it there too.
