Meet the captain and senior staff on board msc grandiosa.

MSC Cruises announced that Marco Massa will captain the MSC Grandiosa when the ship is handed over to MSC on October 31st. Like all captains of the MSC fleet, Marco Massa has many years of experience and a successful career within the company.

Captain Massa: In the footsteps of his father

Massa began his career in 1995 at the MSC Symphony as Junior Cadet Officer – a position on which his father also started at MSC. After that, Massa sailed as the third and second navigation officer on the MSC Rhapsody, the MSC Melody and the MSC Monterey. In 2003, he became Environmental Officer on MSC Lirica, the first cruise ship ever built by MSC for his fleet. For Massa followed other stations as Safety Officer at the MSC Opera and the MSC Sinfonia.

In 2006, he was appointed Staff Captain of the ship during MSC Musica’s entry into service, and later became Staff Captain on the MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida, and the MSC Magnifica. The Staff Captain is responsible for the operations on board during the final phase of construction and commissioning of the ship.

In 2012, Massa became captain at the MSC Musica. He was the youngest captain ever to take command of a cruise ship from MSC.

In 2018 he was the captain of the MSC Seaview and took command of the MSC Magnifica in January 2019 during the first World Cruise of MSC Cruises. Before taking up his job as captain at the MSC Grandiosa at the end of October, he will head the MSC Seaside.

The 9th of November 2019 is not only the day of the festive baptism of the MSC Grandiosa, the date also marks Marco Massa’s birthday.

Antonino Cuccaro becomes Staff Captain

In addition, MSC Cruises announced that Antonino Cuccaro will become Staff Captain at the MSC Grandiosa. His career began in 2002 as Junior Deck Cadet aboard the MSC Melody. Afterwards he took on various positions on board as well as on land. In 2011 he was promoted to Safety Officer of MSC Musica and in 2016 to Staff Captain on the MSC Divina. For the past two years he has been working with Captain Massa aboard the MSC Seaside, the MSC Seaview and the MSC Magnifica.

Chief Engineer: Antonio Iaccarino

Antonio Iaccarino becomes the future Chief Engineer at the MSC Grandiosa. He started his career in 1995 as a second engineer at MSC Cargo. After his promotion to Chief Engineer, he joined MSC Cruises in 2000, initially as a Staff Engineer aboard the Lirica class, and a year later he was appointed Chief Engineer. Iaccarino has already worked aboard all MSC Cruises ship classes. His last stop was the MSC Meraviglia, whose final stage of construction he accompanied intensively and on which he was also on board after the commissioning.

Hotel Director: Giuseppe Maresca

Giuseppe Maresca will take over the position of hotel director at the MSC Grandiosa. He comes from the MSC Bellissima, for which he has been working as hotel manager since commissioning. He began his career at MSC in 2000 as a hotel storekeeper aboard the MSC Melody. In 2008, he was appointed deputy hotel director aboard MSC Splendida within a year, and in 2011 promoted to hotel director of MSC Fantasia.

We look forward to meet Captain Massa and his team during our visit on board MSC Grandiosa in a few weeks time.

MSC Cruises today announced that Marco Massa will take the command of MSC Grandiosa when she enters service on Oct. 31, according to a press release.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Massa started his career on MSC’s fleet in 1995, embarking aboard the MSC Symphony as a Junior Cadet Officer, and then sailed as a Third and Second Navigation Officer on MSC Rhapsody, MSC Melody and MSC Monterey. He became Environmental Officer of the MSC Lirica in 2003 and was subsequently employed as Safety Officer on the MSC Opera and MSC Sinfonia.

He was named captain of the MSC Musica in 2012, becoming the youngest person to take command of an MSC Cruises ship, according to the company.

His most recent assignments include the command of the newly-launched MSC Seaview in 2018 as well as the command of MSC Magnifica during the company’s inaugural world cruise in January 2019.

He is currently captain aboard the MSC Seaside, a position that he will hold until he assumes the Grandiosa’s command in October.

It’s November 2017 and Rafaela Aponte double-checks that the carpets, curtains, and chairs are just right on the MSC Seaside, MSC Cruises’ newest ship. An owner of Swiss-based MSC Cruises, Aponte led the interior design efforts on the Seaside, as she does for all her family’s ships; in the weeks before any MSC ship’s maiden voyage, Aponte lingers near the port and sometimes stays on the nearly-ready ship to examine and perfect the design. The Miami-based Seaside is a milestone – designed with the U.S. market in mind, it was MSC Cruises’ first ship christened in the U.S. and a part of the European company’s $12 billion multiyear investment that will triple the company’s passenger capacity by 2026.

Aponte runs MSC Cruises and its parent company, MSC Group, with husband Gianluigi, a former ferry ship captain. In 1970, the husband-and-wife team launched cargo shipping venture Mediterranean Shipping, now MSC. Known as a shipping giant, Gianluigi bought a few cruise ships as a novelty in the late 1980s, running cruises between Eastern Africa and Europe. Today MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately-held cruise line with $2 billion in 2016 revenues. The couple are worth a combined $8.9 billion and rank no. 180 among the Forbes Billionaires.

Now, MSC, whose ships visited 199 ports worldwide last year, is taking on the massive U.S. cruise market, going head-to-head with well-known publicly-traded companies like Carnival Corporation, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean Cruises, all of which trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Seaside, which is distinguishable for its 26,000-square-foot spa, the widest waterfront boardwalk ever built, and Miami Beach-inspired architecture, exemplifies MSC’s future – it was built, in a nod to its European roots, by Italy-based firm Fincantieri and signals MSC’s vamped-up efforts to make waves in the famously competitive Caribbean cruise market.

Currently the fourth-largest cruise company worldwide, it is expected to pass Norwegian Cruise Line in terms of capacity by 2026, according to Cruise Industry News.

MSC's chief communications officer Luca Biondolillo credits the company’s current success with attracting “consumers who are looking for a cruise line that’s offering an international product.” He also said that continuing to draw this clientele is integral to MSC’s future; MSC’s clientele is also slightly younger-than-average– the average MSC cruise-goer is 45, while Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports that the average cruise-goer is 46.

However, according to lodging and leisure analyst Patrick Scholes, there is another reason it’s faring so well. MSC offers a “newer product for less,” as competing ships are often older. For example, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Seaside is $439, while a similar cruise on the Norwegian Jade is $399. The kicker? The Jade was built in 2006. For context, Frommer’s writes that the ideal lifespan for a cruise ship is 30 years.

Scholes, a managing director at SunTrust, has followed MSC’s growth path for the past few years and says he’s noticed the company’s profile slowly rising. To that end, in 2017, the MSC Cruises served nearly 2 million passengers worldwide and is the top cruise line in both Europe and South America.

“They’ve been pretty aggressive about building new ships and it makes them stand out,” Scholes said.

According to Scholes, the overall demand for cruise vacations has never been better. He credits a “strong economy with minimal unemployment,” as well as minor wage growth and low gas prices. A large percent of cruise-goers drive their cars to port, Scholes said, and gas prices have long been an indicator of cruise demand, along with a country’s economic health.

“The biggest wild card [for MSC] is that they’re making these 2019, 2020 forecasts, so they’d better hope the economy hangs in there,” Scholes said.

Innovative energy-saving and water-recycling systems installed on our latest ships

We have great respect for the world’s oceans and while we sail an increasing number of guests across the globe, we continuously aim to reduce our impact on the environment per passenger. Through the use of modern technology and environmentally friendly actions, we are striving to lower the environmental impact of our cruises. From using the cleaner marine fuels, to efficiency-enhancing technology, to our advanced onboard recycling systems, we strongly believe that we have increased responsibility towards the environment. [READ MORE] Therefore, we are continuously working to reduce our impact on the environment, and optimize our cruise itineraries to help reduce fuel consumption. One of the ways to save fuel is by lowering water resistance. MSC Cruises uses an anti-fouling paint on the hulls of all of its ships to prevent hull fouling and substantially reduce drag. Each ship in the MSC Cruises fleet has an environmental officer who is responsible for all environmental aspects on board. All recycling and waste management activities are carefully monitored. MSC Cruises has been forward-looking in the way it has built its ships and ready them for future rules and regulations. Our engines are already certified for the future NOX emissions standards, and are in compliance with latest IMO-MARPOL Annex VI requirement. In addition, some of our ships are equipped with exhaust cleaning systems, to reduce SOx emissions released from the main engine. Our optimized ballast water management system also complies with the latest IMO guidelines aimed at minimizing environmental impact.

MSC Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the MSC Cruises ships with the most things to do on board? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest MSC Cruises ships.

The biggest MSC Cruises ships have the most pools, hot tubs, waterslides and other deck-top allures, as well as the most restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. They have the biggest spas and casinos among ships in the MSC Cruises fleet, and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 6,000 passengers or more, the biggest MSC Cruises ships are truly massive resorts of the sort you find at such landlocked destinations as Las Vegas and Orlando. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the MSC Cruises ships for you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, MSC Cruises doesn't just operate giant vessels. The Switzerland-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just a third the size of the biggest MSC Cruises ships. These smaller vessels, notably, have far fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest MSC Cruises ships.

Vacationers who like their resort experiences on the more intimate side will want to gravitate to the smaller MSC Cruises ships.

What is the biggest MSC Cruises ship?

The biggest MSC Cruises ship is MSC World Europa. At 215,863 gross tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the sixth biggest cruise ship in the world from any line.

Unveiled in the final days of 2022 (so close to year's end that we considered it a new vessel for 2023 when we listed the year's most exciting new ships ), MSC World Europa can hold up to 6,762 passengers — almost as many as can fit on Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class vessels, the world's largest cruise ships.

What is the smallest MSC Cruises ship?

The smallest MSC Cruises ships are MSC Armonia and its sister vessel MSC Sinfonia. Built with the same specifications, the two ships measure just 65,542 tons a piece — just a third the size of the biggest MSC Cruises ship (MSC World Europa).

Unveiled in 2001 and 2002, respectively, MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia are not only the smallest MSC Cruises ships but also the oldest MSC Cruises ships.

Because of their small size, MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia have fewer restaurants, bars and entertainment areas than the biggest MSC Cruises ships. They also don't have the big water parks that are common on newer MSC Cruises ships. For the most part, their top decks are lined only with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the early 2000s.

Are bigger MSC Cruises ships coming?

Probably. MSC Cruises currently has three new cruise ships on order that are all sister vessels to the line's new MSC World Europa, the first ship in the line's new World class of ships. The line hasn't said for sure how big the vessels will be, but the second, third and fourth vessels in a series are typically at least as big or bigger than the first vessel in a series.

The first of the new ships to arrive will be MSC World America in 2025, which is scheduled to be deployed in Florida . Two more of the World-class vessels are scheduled for completion in 2026 and 2027.

The World-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

In addition to the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big MSC Cruises ships to start arriving later this decade, though there have been few details released.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller MSC Cruises ships?

The biggest MSC Cruises ships have room for a lot more onboard venues and attractions than older MSC Cruises ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience as opposed to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest MSC Cruises ship, MSC World Europa, you'll find an almost unbelievable number of pools and hot tubs (six and 14, respectively). The watery offerings include an aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. There is also a family sun deck.

In addition, MSC World Europa has 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. In a twist, the ship has three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambiance.

The smallest MSC Cruises ships are just a third the size of MSC World Europa and thus lack room for many of the larger ships' features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people.

While the new MSC World Europa can hold nearly 7,000 people with every berth filled, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Lirica class) are only designed to carry about 2,700 passengers with every berth filled.

MSC Cruises' smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try MSC Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the smallest MSC Cruises ships are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of MSC World Europa.
