View over Toulon

The Old Town of Toulon was severely damaged during the Second World War, however, it has retained much of its former charm.

You will enjoy wandering the narrow cobblestone streets and relaxing at the peaceful squares embellished with gushing fountains. On warm days, it's pleasant to stop in one of these shady squares and enjoy a refreshment at an outdoor café.

Not to be missed is the Hôtel de Ville , famous for the "Caryatides" sculptures at the building's entrance. These sculpted figures that seem to hold up the balcony were created by Pierre Puget (1620-1694) and have been copied many times all over Provence, but here they remain unsurpassed in their expression.

By continuing to the west, you may stroll along the busy Rue d'Alger that leads into the Rue Hoche and then to the Place Puget with the Fontaine des Trois Dauphins (Fountain of Three Dolphins), which is overgrown and covered with deposits of lime like many fountains in Provence.

Along the waterfront of the Port Saint-Louis is the atmospheric old fishing village, Le Mourillon quarter. This historic area is characterized by its narrow lanes and charming small houses painted in an array of vibrant colors. On Rue Lamalgue are many boutiques and gourmet restaurants.

The Mourillon quarter also has lovely sandy beaches , ideal for families; the beaches feature things to do year-round and restaurants at the water's edge.

A charming way to see some of the sights of the Old Town is on a touristic train ride. Les Petits Trains de Toulon offers sightseeing tours in Le Mourillon. This 45-minute "City Tour" route passes by the military port, the Mourillon beaches, the Fort Saint-Louis, the Opéra de Toulon, and the 16th-century Tour Royale (Royal Tower) with exceptional sea views.

Port de Toulon

The Bay of Toulon is considered Europe's most beautiful harbor, but it is also a busy working port. In fact, there are multiple ports where fishing boats and yachts are docked, as well as where ferries and cruise ships depart.

Along the scenic waterfront, palm-fringed sidewalks are lined with boutiques and the terraces of bustling brasseries. Take a leisurely quayside stroll to soak up the scenery.

Toulon is the main hub of the French navy fleet in the Mediterranean. One of the ports at the harbor is the historic Arsenal de Toulon (naval base), which dates back to 1738 during the reign of Henri IV. The naval base includes shipbuilding yards and military port docks.

Besides its military and commercial purposes, the Toulon harbor is the launching point of ferry routes . From the Port of Toulon, you can take boat rides to many of the attractions in the area, including La Seyne-sur-Mer and Les Sablettes beaches.

From May through October, a ferry service is available to the idyllic Porquerolles Island , one of the Îles d'Or (Golden Islands), which are also known as the Îles d'Hyères. The ferry ride takes about 75 minutes. Ferries also depart from the Port of Toulon to the Island of Corsica and Italy's Sardinia .

Alternatively, take the Téléphérique du Faron (cable car).

Housed in a martial building, the museum displays a collection of artifacts and documentation, weapons, and articles of equipment related to the landing of the Allied Forces on August 15, 1944.

A telescope on the roof of the fort provides a superb panorama of the city, the port, and the mountains rising all around. On the plateau of Mont Faron's summit is a charming garden with a great variety of flowers.

Opéra de Toulon

On the Place Victor Hugo, the Opéra de Toulon theater was created by the architect Charles Garnier who also designed the Palais Garnier (Opera House) in Paris . This splendid Neoclassical building is one of the largest opera houses in France outside of Paris.

This exquisite theater was designed as the performance venue for the Opéra de Toulon company. With its splendid design details and exceptional acoustics, the Opera House provides an elegant venue for opera, dance, theater, and symphony performances, as well as music festival concerts.

The museum also displays a fascinating assortment of antique model ships, from an 18th-century steamboat to the Imperial Canoe of Napoléon I.

One of the museum's prized possessions is Le Louis XV (circa 1720 - 1725), a model of an 18th-century ship created to house the French Royal Navy squadron's command. The richly ornamented model features three decks and more than a hundred cannons.

This classified Monument Historique was built in the 11th century by the order of the Count of Provence. The bell tower at the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-de-la-Seds dates to the 1740s. The typically Provençal structure features a unique bell and ringing contraption crafted from wrought iron.

When touring the cathedral, be sure to see the Baroque altar, the work of Christophe Veyrier, who was the nephew and a student of Pierre Puget.

Also of interest are the Tour de l'Horloge clock tower and the Church of Saint-Trophime , which both date to the 18th century. Below the church is the oldest part of the village, with steep narrow streets known as "rompi-cuou" ("breakneck"). This type of cobblestone pedestrian lane is a common characteristic of Provençal medieval hilltop towns.

Climate [ edit ]

Climate is typical of the South of France. The summers are relatively hot, with temperatures usually higher than 30 °C. June is a hot month but a sudden storm may occur every once in a while. July usually features hot temperatures and blue sky. August may be even hotter, but storms may begin to occur especially after the 15th of the month. Autumns are rainy. Storms will occur. Winters are dry. Temperatures don't usually drop sharply under 0 °C, but the wind factor causes a loss in Celsius degrees equal to one less degree per 10 km wind speed, thus with a wind blowing at 50 km/h 0°C will feel like minus 5°C.

Unlike many other towns of France, there is no big river which crosses this city. As a matter of fact, there are no big rivers in the whole department of Var. A few smaller ones in the city are: Rivière neuve , Le Las , L'Eygoutier also known as Rivière des amoureux (lover's river for a no apparent reason). All the other rivers are in tunnels under the town, and not visible.

Economy [ edit ]

The economy relies on the presence of a big French naval base that creates thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Tourism is also important. the town has up to 167,400 tourists every year

History [ edit ]

The history of Toulon dates back 3000 years. The Ligures settled here because of exceptional conditions:

  • a hill protects the center of the town from the Mistral, a strong wind which blows in the southeast of France (you will experience wind almost everyday).
  • on the south face of the hill, several sources gush out, which is exceptional in the so dry Provence . The name Toulon is linked to Telona, an ancient Ligurian goddess of sources.
  • the hill (named Faron, about 500 m high) enables one to view boats arriving from very far away, specially enemy boats. The name Faron cames from the Greek pharos (English: lighthouse ) for this reason. At the top of Faron, there still is a military camp dedicated to communications with submarines.
  • the water of the port is very calm, because it is protected by a peninsula ( Saint-Mandrier ) that nearly closes the port as a lagoon. It was possible to watch boats entering the port from there.

For all these reasons, Toulon early became a town of military vocation. When the Romans invaded the Provence (Latin: provincia romana ), they settled a military base and renamed the town Telo Martius, where martius recalls Mars, the Roman god of war.

During the Middle Ages, Provence was under the coup of lords, before being integrated into the French Kingdom in 1482. During the 18th century, Toulon became an important military port for France, were boats and sails were being built. A famous convict prison was built. During the French Revolution, Toulon gave support to the monarchy, but Bonaparte (later known as Napoleon I) took back the town. During World War II, Toulon was invaded on November 27, 1942. The seamen scuttled all the boats so that the Nazis couldn't use them. The town was freed by the Allied Forces on August 25, 1944.

Vieille Ville (old town) or Basse Ville (lower town) is a historical centre of the city. It is NE of the harbour. As it was built in the Middle Ages, it's a really a maze of narrow streets. A couple of bigger ones, Rue d'Alger and Cours Lafayette , are bordered by numerous shops and crowded every Saturday.

  • 43.119906 5.931931 1 Vieux Port . Visit the old harbour and its promenade . The folk of old Provence, the typical accent of locals, and some wooden boats on the still sea (the folk is better in smaller town along the coast, however). Numerous souvenir shops, coffee shops and fish restaurants. Also on the port square, you'll see the statue of the Spirit of Navigation pointing at the sea, locally known as "cul vers ville" for its buttocks are turned toward the city. The statue was hidden and thought lost, during World War II, until it was found by chance in a local carpenter's shop who returned it to the authorities. ( updated May 2015 )
  • 43.123311 5.932885 2 Place Puget . In the historical centre, it's the ancient centre of the town. There is a fountain built in 1780 with a sculpture of three dolphins, now completely covered by ivy. You'll enjoy staying in the shade of this place, at a coffee shop, during a hot afternoon. ( updated May 2015 )
  • 43.1214 5.934 3 Cathedral Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds ( near Place Puget ). (aka Saint Marie de la Seds Cathedral) Built in the 11th century, it has never been finished, but widened in 1738. There are numerous paintings of the 18th century. ( updated May 2015 )

Haute Ville [ edit ]

Haute Ville (upper town) is located on the north of the historical center. The most of the buildings and squares there are in splendor of the late XIXth century style. The major part of Haute Ville was built under the guidance of Georges-Eugène Haussmann (aka "Baron Haussmann", who was later called to build Paris).

  • 43.126046 5.9306 7 Place de la Liberté . (Liberty plaza in English) This is one of the town's main square with a fountain of "Monument de la Fédération", featuring a very idealized start of the journey of the Statue of Liberty from Toulon to New York on the frigate Isere. In winter, a skating rink is put up for children and there's a picturesque Christmas market featuring tasting of several specialties from around France during most of December. However this square may be noisy due to the main boulevard of the town running just along the square. ( updated May 2015 )

Beaches [ edit ]

The town features several beaches just south of the Mourillon quarter. They were set up in the 1950s to develop tourism. More beautiful beaches may be found elsewhere on the coast. In any location, you should be prepared to crowd on the beach. The beaches of Toulon are associated to a park with entertainment for children of all ages. At the east of the town, the Cap Brun and Anse Magaud beaches are more isolated, far less crowded, but more difficult to reach (need to climb a little).

  • Les Sablettes in la Seyne sur Mer.
  • L'Argentière, in the town of La Londe-les-Maures (30 km east of Toulon).
  • La Capte, near Hyères (15 km east of Toulon). The bottom is of pure sand (no seaweed) and the depth increases very very slowly.
  • St Cyr sur Mer some 20 km west of Toulon features a long sandy beach, perfect for families and kitesurfers. There too the seabed drops rather slowly, enabling one to reach way out into the water.

Sport [ edit ]

  • RC Toulon — A club with a proud history, the rouge et noir (red and black) are a major force in French and European rugby, thanks to a deep-pocketed owner (comic publisher and Toulon native Mourad Boudjellal). Toulon, who play at Stade Mayol in the heart of the city, have assembled an impressive array of international stars, and won an unprecedented three consecutive European club championship crowns from 2013 to 2015. Tickets may be hard to come by for some big matches, and the club plays one or two major matches a season at either Stade Vélodrome in Marseille or Allianz Riviera in Nice .

Toulon travel guide

Photo of Toulon

Visit Toulon (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France)

Toulon is a major town located on the Mediterranean coast to the east of Marseille in the Var department of Provence.

The town is situated around a rocky bay, sheltered by the limestone rocks of the 'Faron', crowned with ancient fortifications. This sheltered position has given rise to a large harbour and Toulon's role as home to the French naval fleet. See also history of Toulon for the city's development.

Explore Toulon

Although it is not a major tourist destination on the Riviera, Toulon has several notable historic buildings, a great deal of character and - most important - some important museums.

A visit to Toulon will usually start in and focus around the old town. Now much restored, this is the most interesting sector with narrow streets lined with shops leading to small open squares and numerous cafes. The best time to visit is in the morning when the daily market on Cours Lafayette adds some colour to the town.

buildings in Toulon town centre

One of the first important buildings you will see is the 18th century Church of Saint Louis , with its classical style facade, three naves and double Doric columns. Construction began in 1709 and was completed in 1788.

The church was seriously damaged during the course of its history, including damage during WWII. According to witnesses it once featured a peristyle with four Tuscan columns topped by a triangular pediment that ended in a stone cross and a nave supported by doric columns.

Also remarkable is the Fountaine des Trois Douphins (1780) in Puget Place - surely the most remarkable of all the fountains in Toulon for its grandeur and the flow of water that is collected in the large shell below.

But the most interesting building in Toulon is the National Museum of the Navy , which was opened in 1981 and tells the historical story of the Arsenal of Toulon, while also maintaining an outstanding series of ship models from the seventeenth century (merchant ships and fishing boats and other special models).

The arsenal of Toulon , which is perhaps the place most visited by tourists, dates back to the time of Henry IV: it was inaugurated in 1680, and it is very vast. It is entered by a 1738 portico adorned with relieves.

The arsenal contains many paintings, such as the beautiful picture by Antoine Morel Fatio (19th century) called 'The port of Toulon in 1854', also paintings by Emil Mathon, with the 'Retour de l'Admiral de Courbet aux cendres salins d’ Hières'; Vincent Cordouan and the 'Combat de Vaisseau, the Romulus, 13 fevrier 1814', and by J. Vernet is 'Les Vues des Ports de France'.

Another important monument to visit in Toulon is the ' Cathedral of Saint Marie ', dating from the eleventh century and enlarged in the second half of the seventeenth century before being consecrated in 1661. The portal of the cathedral dates back to 1796, and the bell tower is from 1740. There are two Corinthian columns separating the main door from the two sides.

The interior of the cathedral has three naves with ogival arches; several notable paintings and reliefs, and, in the chapel of Corpus Domini there is a magnificent marble composition by Christophe Veyrier: a majestic work, with statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul between which stands the figure of God amongst a group of angels, made of white life-size marble.

Opera building in Toulon

Next to the Cathedral in Toulon is the Musée des Vieux Toulon . This is a very important museum connected with the customs and the history of Toulon, and is divided into several sections (architecture and urbanism, decorative arts and ceramics, drawings and paintings, local and regional history) and presents permanent and temporary art exhibitions.

Among the permanent art exhibitions, see the one concerning Napoleon and his military activities in Toulon in 1793. Among the paintings in the museum are some based on a strong realism, e.g. by the painters Marcel Lonjon and François Nardi (La Rade de Toulon, effet de Mistral) and various others.

Other places of note and Toulon attractions

Another important monument in Toulon is the Tour Royale (16th century), which once exercised the office of prison and now contains a few pieces of artillery.

After visiting the Tour Royale you can enter the Place de la Liberté, an impressive Place with grand 19th century buildings where you will find the Fountain de la Federation (1889).

Here you can also visit the famous Toulon Museum of Art , which is important because it shows the works of the sixteenth century contemporary art world such as Vernet (the 'Marine') and Guerin (the 'Portraits'). Also very interesting is the overview of the pictorial Provencal landscape of the mid-nineteenth century.

Port in Toulon

Toulon New Town and places to visit near Toulon

The new city now in Toulon also has tourist attractions of interest. Surrounded by a ring of hills the city offers an impressive panoramic spectacle, especially when viewed from Mont Faron. Note that while it is possible to drive up Mont Faron it is more entertaining to take the cable car from the town centre!

The area of the modern port, with its frame of boats, also lends itself to leisurely walks, maybe along the Quai Kronstadt. Boat-trips around the Rade de Toulon are a popular excursion from here, during which you see military ships as well as the rest of the port and harbour area.

The nearby beaches of Mourillon are another good reason to visit the region around Toulon. As well as the beaches, Mourillon is like a small Provencal village distinct from Toulon and enjoyable to explore.

Explore elsewhere in the Cote d'Azur . You can find more travel ideas in the Var guide and the Provence guide .
