“What’s the one thing that all of us have felt during this time?” Nick Jonas tells Apple Music, reflecting on the year spent in lockdown. “It’s just completely isolated and disconnected from the world. I wanted to turn our collective isolation into something that could connect us,” he says. Unlike his past projects—each an increasingly steamy blend of soul, funk, and R&B—Spaceman is more pop-oriented and sentimental. On top of the global lockdown, Jonas’ wife Priyanka Chopra spent much of 2020 filming a movie abroad. “I missed my person,” he says. “Most of the songs are just love letters. When I can't articulate the way I feel with words, I go to the studio.” Producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Beck) helped him channel the atmospherics of ’80s radio. “I wanted to tap into a few of my influences that I hadn't before,” Jonas says, citing the commercial hits of boomers like Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, and Steve Winwood. On Spaceman, he turns their signatures—lush synths, padded drums, sax solos, and sticky hooks—into sleek, clear-eyed, contemporary love songs. Read on for the backstory behind each one. Don't Give Up on Us “This was the first song we wrote, and it was an immediate feeling. Emotionally, it stemmed from being away from my wife—those moments when you’re reassuring your person that you're in it for the long haul, and that no matter what happens, there are better days ahead. Musically, Greg [Kurstin] helped me channel a number of my influences, using this heartbeat and a beautiful, ethereal melody, to create what felt like a new sound. It got us excited to go further.” Heights “‘Heights’ came later, after I'd established these four themes for the album: distance, indulgence, euphoria, and commitment. I wanted to create a journey for the listener where one song would go right into the next seamlessly. ‘Don't Give Up on Us’ and ‘Spaceman’ were already written, so I wanted one more song in this block that talked about the leap of faith everyone takes when they dive into a relationship.” Spaceman “I was really inspired by David Bowie, and I’ve always loved ‘Rocket Man’ by Elton John. I always wanted to do something that had that feeling, but in a new way. When I came into the studio, I had the title already written, as well as the last piece of the song, which is the outro that says, ‘Don't want to be alone/Don't want to be/I don't want to be out on my own.’ To fill in the rest, I just thought about what I was going through: I was away from my person, there was this crazy election, we’d all been wearing masks for almost a year. I wanted to speak about that in a poetic way.” 2Drunk “This is something I feel like a lot of us have experienced this year. I wanted to sing about it without getting too serious or heavy, you know? To speak to the mundane Groundhog Day feeling this past year has had. Because definitely some drinking has taken place.” Delicious “This song is directly influenced by Huey Lewis & The News and Peter Gabriel. It has that classic ’80s feel, especially with the horns. One of the cool things about this album is that there were certain limitations we had because of COVID, whether it was doing sessions over Zoom or having to keep bodies in the studio to a minimum. And Greg worked very, very hard to make all these digital instruments sound totally real. I don’t think anyone would know that they’re not actually listening to a full horn section but instead, it’s Greg playing horns on keyboard. So hats off to him.” This Is Heaven “This might be my favorite track on the album. It’s about my personal experience with faith and religion. I believe in a lot of things, and one of the things I believe is that love is a high, important power that connects us all. When you're in that state of euphoria and connection with your person, it should feel like heaven. I wanted to write a song that embodied that. Also, naturally, heaven would have sax solos.” Sexual “This song was originally called ‘Glow,’ but after my wife heard the album she kept referring to it as ‘Sexual.’ I was like, ‘I don't know what you're talking about.’ She felt strongly that it should be called ‘Sexual,’ so at the very last minute I changed the title. Obviously I think she was right. The thing I like about this record is that it feels like the connective tissue between my last solo album, which was more R&B and soul-inspired, and this solo album, which is more ’80s pop. It’s the bridge.” Deeper Love “I love this song’s big, soaring chorus and how unapologetically romantic it is. It has that ’80s feel to it. It’s an anthem. Hope is a major theme throughout this album, but this song brings it home.” If I Fall “I view this track as the bridge between my Jonas Brothers stuff and my solo stuff. My brother Joe even called that out. He was like, ‘I feel like this one could have gone either way, but it's awesome that it's on this album because it shows that it can all coexist in one big, happy, creative family.’ That was just a great thing to hear. Lyrically, I love the message in the song. One of the things about Hindu weddings is that you commit to seven lifetimes together during the ceremony. I've touched on this idea a few times in songs I've written because I just think it's such a beautiful idea. You’re committing not just to this lifetime, but the next, and the next, and the next.” Death Do Us Part “This song definitely leans a little more Frank Ocean or Drake, but the message is very clearly an extension of the previous song. Again, I really wanted that seamless, flowing feeling. We cut the track off abruptly at the end to signify that there's never really an end to that journey. I wanted it to feel like it’d go on forever if we hadn't stepped in.” Nervous “As we were winding down to the last few songs, I wanted a pure love song. Something that I could hear artists like Dan + Shay doing, but produced in a way that matched the rest of this album. I think the message is beautiful. One of my favorite movies is Up because I love the relationship between the couple—the wonder and nervousness in his eyes even as they're years into their relationship. I want that to be how I am throughout my whole life.”

Nick Jonas Spaceman

By Olivia Horn

Pop/R&B

March 16, 2021

To those paying attention, Nick has long been known as the most ambitious of the brothers Jonas —the de facto bandleader, whose outsize aspirations drove them to their highest late-aught heights, and then over the edge to their breakup in 2013. In adulthood, Nick is certainly the most ubiquitous of the trio: Catch him on the big screen colonizing space , on the small screen doling out pop star wisdom to contestants on The Voice , on Broadway , in your local liquor store peddling branded tequila, and, of course, in the studio. Including Spaceman , his latest, Jonas has four solo albums to his name. Between the two of them, his brothers have just one.

Jonas is rich, famous, hyper-visible—a member of a class whose behavior over the past year has arched many an eyebrow. In the throes of pandemic, celebrities have flubbed efforts to boost morale, and failed to disguise the ways that wealth—and the healthcare, real estate, mobility, etc. that it brings—mitigated the need to modify their lifestyles in the interest of public health. Still, relatability is a virtue in pop music, so Jonas approached Spaceman with an eye to shared experience. When, on the album’s first single and title track, he sings, “Mask off minute I get home/All safe now that I’m alone,” it’s clear that he’s not speaking metaphorically.

Spaceman is divided into neat quarters, each with a distinct theme: distance, indulgence, euphoria, and commitment. Jonas has waxed poetic about the significance of the chapters, pegging each to the broader pandemic experience. The first three tracks explore the emotional toll of social isolation; the next two, the coping mechanisms he employed to deal with it. The “euphoria” segment proposes an antidote to the pain, and the final chapter, “commitment,” doubles down on that antidote (spoiler: it’s love). This is all a bit self-help-y. It also scans as an after-the-fact effort to make the album more topical, when its material is actually quite straightforward, and doesn’t warrant this sort of explanation. Using Nick’s liner notes to decode Spaceman feels a bit like cheating on the Monday crossword.

He needn’t try so hard. There’s enough to like on this record, at least initially. With co-writer and executive producer Greg Kurstin—a champion of pleasurable, unchallenging pop, whose past clients have included Maggie Rogers , Maren Morris , and three-fifths of One Direction—Jonas concocts a gaseous synth-pop sound swollen with reverb, punctuated with Phil Collins-style drum fills, and elevated by liberal application of falsetto. The space theme enters the mix via futuristic blips and fragmented radio signals. Modulating synths gracefully bridge gaps between songs, demonstrating interest in the album format beyond its potential as a vessel for singles (though continuity goes out the window on Spaceman ’s “Classics Edition,” which interpolates the four biggest hits from Jonas’ previous records into the new material).

There are particular bright spots in the “indulgence” chapter, which ducks the album’s overall self-seriousness. “Delicious” is a juicy slice of blue-eyed funk, the sort that Jonas might have aspired to when he recruited core members of Prince ’s New Power Generation to back him on 2010’s Who I Am . “2Drunk” lands lightly, and with a wink; Jonas sets a delightful scene (“Now I’m dancing in the kitchen/Breaking all the dishes/Breaking all the rules that I set myself”) and gamely makes himself the butt of the joke (“I think I just hit my stride/’til I wake up and hate my life”).

He can’t sustain the buzz, though. In the morass of the album’s second half, we get “Deeper Love,” a song that, despite its title, doesn’t quite grasp the profundity of lifetime commitment. “I wanna know what it’d be like to know what I believe in/I wanna find it in your eyes,” Jonas sings, ambivalently. He’s 28 and married, but still relies on eye contact as a locus of stability, the same way he did on the Jonas Brothers smash “When You Look Me in the Eyes”— initially penned for his first solo album, which he released at age 12. If he’s is trying to light a fire with “Sexual,” he smothers it with the ham-handed lyric, “You put the sex in sexual.” The song namedrops Marvin Gaye , but has no place alongside “Sexual Healing” or “Let’s Get It On” in the hallowed canon of horny jams (though the electric sitar is a cute nod to wife Priyanka Chopra’s Bollywood roots).

The dud parade marches on: The placid synth of “If I Fall” is soothing, but the song doesn’t hold water conceptually. Jonas is ostensibly singing about his current and forever love, but pretzels the premise by looking ahead to the next: “If I fall again /It’d be the last time.” What? “Death Do Us Part” is genuinely the record’s sexiest song—Jonas’ delivery is cool and relaxed, his ad libs additive—but verses comparing wedded bliss to assorted snacks (watermelon, Cool Whip, Pringles, caviar) verge on absurdity.

“Wife guy” is a prominent part of Jonas’ public persona these days, the way “Disney kid” once was. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it does bind his identity to that of another pop culture heavyweight, casting his music in the shadow of their combined celebrity. To cut through and leave a lasting impression of Nick Jonas, the artist, would require a vision much bolder than what Spaceman has to offer. The album’s interstellar concept is interesting enough to get it off the ground, but too quickly Jonas retreats to his domestic comforts, without really probing the relationship that so inspires him, or charting any new territory in the pop universe. It’s hard to imagine anyone who wasn’t already a Nick Jonas fan playing this album on repeat. His brand may sell, but this music is less desirable.

He alludes to the 2020 election, the coronavirus pandemic, and ongoing inequality in the lyrics: “They say it’s a phase, it’ll change if we vote/And I pray that it will, but I know that it won’t/I’m a spaceman/Yeah, I’m a spaceman/And the numbers are high but we keep goin’ down/’Cause we ain’t supposed to live with nobody around/I’m a spaceman/Yeah, I’m a spaceman.”

Jonas will perform “Spaceman” live for the first time as the host and musical guest of  Saturday Night Live on February 27th, 11:30 p.m. EST on NBC. The show will be Jonas’ debut as an  SNL host and his second time performing solo as the musical guest, outside of his performances with the Jonas Brothers.

Album review: “Spaceman” by Nick Jonas

Nick jonas joins the pandemic album club with a heavily thematic and highly uneven new release.

By Sean Maunier on March 19, 2021

Nick Jonas, spaceman, album

Now on his fourth album, there’s probably no arguing at this point that Nick Jonas is the Jonas Brother who made it. His star power is undeniable, and his status as a household name is probably assured for years to come. Having the bar high set for himself might ultimately be what makes his latest release, Spaceman , a frustrating listen.

With Spaceman (★★☆☆☆), Jonas joins an ever-growing list of artists who have put out a pandemic album — not only an album that happened to come out during a pandemic, but one that is preoccupied with its isolating and alienating effects. In the opening few tracks, he returns frequently to the feeling of being physically and emotionally cut off from humanity.

The title track goes beyond the metaphorical with lyrics like, “And the numbers are high, but we keep going down/’Cause we ain’t supposed to live with nobody around.” To Jonas’ credit, keeping his focus on isolation writ large allows him to avoid the painful “we’re all in this together” grasp for relatability that other celebs with a similar profile have attempted and fallen on their faces over.

With its timely concept and light sci-fi vibes, the title track turns out to be the highlight of an otherwise sleepy album. Out of its four “acts,” “Distance,” “Indulgence,” “Euphoria,” and “Commitment,” the first one sounds most true to its concept. After that, the album loses focus.

Nick Jonas: Spaceman

There’s no denying Jonas brings an endearing earnestness to everything he does, and tracks like “2Drunk” and “Sexual” are charming, but the faux-innocence he sometimes affects is laid on so thick that it feels disingenuous. Jonas has more success with “Delicious,” a fun, funky pop track full of a playfulness that could have made for a more fun album had he leaned into it.

Town 2.0 Sues to Terminate Lease for St. Phillip’s Church

While the middle portion of the album meanders, the final chapter, “Commitment,” is even less focused and brings the mood down with its sleepy self-seriousness. “Death Do Us Part” in particular is bogged down by nonsensical yet earnestly delivered lyrics. As anticlimactic as “Nervous” is as a closer, five bonus tracks follow it on the deluxe version of the album, which is the one that most listeners will probably end up hearing anyway.

The other Jonas brothers, Kevin and Joe, join him on “Selfish,” a track that sounds like what it is — a little Jonas Brothers reunion tour that will probably give anyone who grew up on them a blast of nostalgia.

Spaceman can’t quite decide if it wants to be an album about an isolating pandemic, Jonas’ doe-eyed love for Priyanka Chopra, or both. Ultimately, it ends up being a work that seems to want to say something but in the end says nothing much about anything in particular.

Nick Jonas certainly has the charisma, drive, and access to A-list talent around him to come up with a record that would not only define his career but would also be genre-defining as well. Despite its charm, the thought-provoking subject of its title track, and a few standout moments, Spaceman is just not that album.

Spaceman is available to stream and purchase now .

Nick Jonas Drops Deluxe Version of 'Spaceman' Album — and It Features a Track with the Jonas Brothers!

"Told you @jonasbrothers weren't going anywhere 😎," he wrote

JoBros stans, this one's for you!

On Sunday, Nick Jonas dropped the deluxe version of his recently released Spaceman album — and one of the new tracks features his brothers Joe and Kevin .

"Told you @jonasbrothers weren't going anywhere 😎," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram announcing the album's new iteration, including the Jonas Brothers ' collaboration of "Selfish."

"🚀🚀🚀," the Jonas Brothers commented.

The deluxe Spaceman — and its new cover — features five new tracks, including three remixes to previously released songs. "2Drunk," Don't Give Up on Us," and "This Is Heaven," which all got a "chill" makeover."

Along with the JoBros track, Jonas released a song titled "Dangerous."

"I wanna be selfish, selfish / For you and not for me / I wanna be loveless, selfless / Want all of you for me," Joe and Nick sing in the chorus for "Selfish." "I wanna be the only thing you can't live without / Every day, every night, when you try to breathe."

Nick released Spaceman just on Friday, along with a music video for the track's title track featuring a scene with his wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas .

During a recent conversation with Apple Music's Zane Lowe , Jonas talked about his new album's concept.

"I think the key for me was trying to find a way to give this idea a persona, give it a name. So 'Spaceman' came into my mind because I was thinking, 'What's the one thing that all of us have felt during this time?' It's just completely disconnected from the world," he said.

Jonas continued, "We've gotten so accustomed to looking at a screen instead of human interaction, and I think the thing that keeps us all encouraged and hopeful is just the idea of knowing that there will be a tomorrow when this isn't our reality, and I think the body of work as a whole tracks that ."

Spaceman is Nick's first album since the Jonas Brothers reunited and since he dropped his solo LP Last Year Was Complicated in 2016.

Nick Jonas album review brothers

In a still-young 2021, the ubiquity of Nick Jonas is stunning. Along with coaching duties on NBC’s singing competition “The Voice,” Jonas has already appeared as host and guest of “Saturday Night Live,” will release his Lionsgate film “Chaos Walking” momentarily, is prepping for the role of Frankie Valli in a streaming theater version of “Jersey Boys,” appears as a narrating actor on Apple TV Plus drama mystery “Calls” starting March 19 and, this Monday, joins his wife, actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas to announce 2021’s Oscar nominations.

So busy is he that his own fam, Jonas Brothers ’ Kevin Jonas, made a surprise appearance during Nick’s SNL monologue to joke, “Are we good?”

Look no further than Nick Jonas’ “Spaceman” album for the answer. Then, imagine if Jonas had only utilized all that time spent on goofing around with Blake Shelton, or career-building busy work, on a new solo album that wasn’t merely semi-soulful and often just listless.

A Nick Jonas solo project differs from any work with Kevin and Joe in that it is more spacious with zero chance of power pop, and never quite as cluttered as having three brothers’ ideas of rhythm or desire for guitars in the mix. If we go back to to 2014’s “Nick Jonas” and 2016’s “Last Year Was Complicated,” it’s clear this solo bro digs his pop on the sensual, electro-soul and sleek club tip, baring lyrics rippling with references to a sensitive but occasionally salacious lover-man within.

Popular on Variety

“Spaceman’s” chic layering and synthetic sheen aren’t quite as glossy as the sound on those predecessors. Producer Greg Kurstin carries over a pre-sequencer ’80s vibe from his recent mix for the Foo Fighters’ “Medicine at Midnight”; pillowy analog synths and cloudy, new romantic choruses are the order of the day. All things synthetic and analog lend ballads such as the title track and the falsetto-laden “Heights” a faux airiness, the likes of which make patients in hospital settings comfortable and gave the likes of Naked Eyes and OMD their careers.

It’s not exactly ambient, but not exceptionally proactive – and, problematically not too melodically provocative – as Jonas and Kurstin experiment with soft, amorphous floating vibes for the vocalist to loll upon. That’s in stark contrast to the Jonas Brothers’ sound, which has always been exacting and precise. Think of their 2019 smash “Sucker,” and the manner in which the trio interacted with that cut’s stammering pulse. That’s stopwatch-pop of the highest, most contagious order.

Through “Spaceman,” Jonas’ sighing highs and delicious falsetto do sound freer than ever., especially when paired with a spare piano or breezy synth on “Don’t Give Up on Us.” When, on “Heights,” he intones, “We don’t need to get so heated / Just trying to talk / Forget about the he-said-she said,” his vocals flit, fly and punctuate. Maybe making movies is paying off as he now understands dramatic enunciation better than ever.

But then again, enunciation without deep emotion or the energy of a payoff hook takes him and the listener nowhere. And this is where the problems of “Spaceman” begin.

The problem with a cloud is that you can’t dig a hook into it; you can’t cut into it with a rich and prickly chorus. It just blows away. Take the strummed, thumpy “Deeper Love,” a song co-credited to Foreigner’s Mick Jones for its subtle nod to “I Wanna Know What Love Is”: Even after multiple listens, it’s hard to find anything to adore about or attach to it, save for Jonas’ pleasant croon. The same thing goes for the drifting, mid-tempo “This is Heaven” and the upbeat “2Drunk.”

There is, maybe inevitably in the time of COVID, a low-level anxiety to all of “Spaceman’s” proceedings, based on 2020’s universal sense of cloistered isolation and the horrors of bigot-based politics. Maybe i’s a noble thought to try to bring that in here, but a title track that goes “TV tells me what to think / Bad news, maybe I should drink” and “They say it’s a phase, it’ll change if we vote / And I pray that it will, but I know that it won’t” signifies nothing.

For a guy whose sly romanticism as a vocalist is a calling card, Jonas’ lyrics are tin-eared, sometimes to the point of weirdness. A lover has a body “drippin’ in definition” in the awful “Delicious,” which doesn’t benefit any more from its Prince nods and too-slick horn charts than it does its words. In an off-kilter, rhythm-heavy ballad dedicated to his wife, “Death Do Us Part.” Jonas makes references to eternity and Dracula, while also comparing their relationship to “caviar with some Pringles.” Is that a thing? Is Priyanka OK with this?

While maybe you can reach to appreciate that mildly twisted a culinary blend, a throwaway moment like that — and so many other bits of “Spaceman,” where throwaways were not required — might make you  question Jonas’ deeper emotional commitment to this project. Which is a shame, as his voice has never sounded more on-point, and the surrounding opulent sonics have never allowed it such freedom. The  album’s true possibilities, meanwhile, are lost in space.

Nick Jonas - 2Drunk (Lyric Video)

Written by Jonas, Mozella, and producer Greg Kurstin, Spaceman is the singer’s first solo album in five years. In 2019, he reconvened with his brothers Joe and Kevin to release Happiness Begins , the first Jonas Brothers record in a decade. The announcement of Spaceman stirred up rumors that the band had gone on another hiatus, although Jonas has insisted that isn’t the case.

“Told you Jonas Brothers weren’t going anywhere,” he tweeted of the release of “Selfish” on Spaceman (Deluxe) .

Jonas created Spaceman in 2020 while at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Writing this album was a way to process everything that was happening in the world, the distance between up, and what matters most,” he said on Twitter.

Jonas added: “I hope you take the time to experience the album in full from start to finish and that you find solace while joining Spaceman on the greatest adventure of all… Love.”
