History of Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Origins and early history of nissan patrol super safari.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari has its roots in the broader Nissan Patrol series, which has been an iconic part of Nissan’s lineup since the early 1950s. Established as a rival against vehicles like the series Land Rover, the Patrol was marketed as a no-nonsense off-roader built to take on the most challenging terrains. Over the years, the Patrol series evolved significantly from its utilitarian beginnings into a more sophisticated and comfortable vehicle, while maintaining its rugged capabilities. The Super Safari variant, introduced in the late 1980s, marked a significant milestone in the Patrol series and quickly became a favorite among off-road enthusiasts.

The Evolution of Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Over the years, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari saw numerous modifications and improvements in design, performance, and technology. From the initial y60 model to the current y61 version, each generation aimed to improve upon the last by incorporating state-of-the-art designs and features.

One of the first major facelifts occurred with the transition from the y60 to the y61 model. This carried significantly enhanced features, including a new exterior design, interior refurbishments, and engine upgrades. The y61 model provided both luxury and reliability without compromising the vehicle’s renowned off-road prowess.

Key Influencers Behind Its Development

Nissan’s primary objective behind the Super Safari was to create a vehicle that combined luxury and comfort with off-road capacity. This model was the result of extensive research and development by Nissan’s team of engineers and designers who understood the need for a robust, comfortable, and versatile 4×4 vehicle.

One of the key influencers in the Patrol Super Safari’s development was consumers’ feedback and their need for improvements. Nissan consistently incorporated this feedback into the design and performance of the Super Safari, leading to ongoing refinement of its specifications, power, and comfort levels.

The Unique Features Each Model Introduced

Every new iteration of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari introduced distinct features that set it apart from its predecessor. The y60 model, for example, was the first to introduce the coil-sprung suspension instead of the traditional leaf springs, resulting in better suspension and a smoother ride.

The y61 model saw an introduction of a more powerful engine, a turbo diesel option, as well as a direct injection petrol engine. Additionally, Nissan added creature comforts normally found in more upscale vehicles like an adjustable steering wheel, power windows, and dual airbags.

Perhaps the most notable feature, unique to the Super Safari, is its off-road prowess. The Super Safari’s robust engine, combined with a highly capable 4WD system and high ground clearance, allows it to tackle the harshest and diverse terrains with ease.

Introduction to Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Keeping with tradition, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari excels at delivering a powerful, luxurious, and unmatched off-road experience. Rare Rides: Patrol the Desert in This 1989 Nissan Safari

Corey Lewis

The Patrol has forever been Nissan’s answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser, as both brands compete for rough and tumble SUV customers. Today’s Rare Ride represents just how many creature comforts can be added to a go-anywhere truck.

Presenting the Nissan Safari from 1989.

rare rides patrol the desert in this 1989 nissan safari

The Patrol started production in 1951, aping the looks and function of the Willys Jeep. It borrowed the name too; sometimes it was just called a Jeep. Mostly intended for military use, the bare-bones first generation lasted through 1960.

With the debut of the second generation, production expanded to include more body styles: Patrol now offered hardtops, vans, and a pickup truck. Distribution expanded as well, and the Patrol was sold (as a Nissan) at Datsun dealerships in North America between 1962 and 1969.

It was 1980 before the third-generation Patrol began production, known as the 160 series. Comfort and equipment came into play for the first time, as this generation saw the introduction of an automatic transmission. Accompanying the transmission option were new trim levels. Deluxe examples included luxuries like air conditioning and power steering.

A fourth-generation (Y60) Patrol started production in 1987, bringing us to today’s Rare Ride. In a turn from prior generations, a coil suspension replaced the old leaf springs and brought refinement to travel. Power steering was standard and, if buyers spent enough money, they’d have the benefit of front and rear disc brakes. Automatic transmissions in this generation were all of the four-speed variety, while manuals had five forward gears. Engines ranged between 2.8 and 4.2 liters, all of them inline-sixes.

The Japanese market received the fourth-generation Patrol as the Safari. While models for other markets had a 12-volt electrical system, the Safari had a 24-volt. Today’s Rare Ride is a decked-out short-wheelbase example from the end of the Eighties. It has the largest 4.2-liter diesel engine. Said diesel propels all the tape stripes, power equipment, and tweedy seats through an automatic transmission. The Safari asks $14,900 and is located in Philadelphia.

Corey Lewis

Interested in lots of cars and their various historical contexts. Started writing articles for TTAC in late 2016, when my first posts were QOTDs. From there I started a few new series like Rare Rides, Buy/Drive/Burn, Abandoned History, and most recently Rare Rides Icons. Operating from a home base in Cincinnati, Ohio, a relative auto journalist dead zone. Many of my articles are prompted by something I'll see on social media that sparks my interest and causes me to research. Finding articles and information from the early days of the internet and beyond that covers the little details lost to time: trim packages, color and wheel choices, interior fabrics. Beyond those, I'm fascinated by automotive industry experiments, both failures and successes. Lately I've taken an interest in AI, and generating "what if" type images for car models long dead. Reincarnating a modern Toyota Paseo, Lincoln Mark IX, or Isuzu Trooper through a text prompt is fun. Fun to post them on Twitter too, and watch people overreact. To that end, the social media I use most is Twitter, @CoreyLewis86. I also contribute pieces for Forbes Wheels and Forbes Home.

Bumpy ii

One of the carriers around here has a JDM Mitsubishi Pajero for that.

JohnTaurus

@bumpy ii I've been tempted to become a mail carrier just so I can justify buying some quirky RHD Japanese metal. But, in reality, $14k+ is a bit much for an older vehicle that will see daily service and may quite possibly be near impossible to find parts for. Yeah, a new RHD Wrangler is twice that easy, but it has a warranty and service/parts availability virtually anywhere on this continent.

Gedrven

Does it still have the 24V electrical system? While such things have merits for reliability reasons, maintainability would take a huge hit unless you have military-like economies of scale. What do you use for lightbulbs, for instance?

If i were to guess, it's only a partial 24v for the starting and charging circuits, and the cluster and other electrical accessories are 12v. Some older diesel tractors were set up that way.

Nissan patrol super safari: enduring off-road icon’s encore run.

By Ghaith Madadha - May 01,2023 - Last updated at May 01,2023

nissan patrol super safari history

First introduced in 1997 and resurrected again seven years after its ostensible retirement, the fifth “Y61” generation Nissan Patrol’s 2017 Middle East comeback marks a welcome return of a rugged and authentic off-road icon.

Now dubbed the Nissan Patrol Super Safari and beloved by Gulf motorists in particular for its near-legendary durability, extensive off-road ability and high comfort levels, the Y61 has since been sold concurrent with the more modern and refined, if perhaps more softer-edged, “Y62” sixth generation Patrol, circa 2010 onwards.

Reliable reputation

A favourite family car and lifestyle off-roader, the Y61 Patrol’s position as an icon of the Gulf automotive scene is rooted in its extreme durability.

This is perhaps best exemplified by its popular use as the basis for highly modified uphill sand dune drag racing, where its proverbially “bullet-proof” engine is routinely tuned to in excess of 2,000BHP.

Playing to such a reputation, the revived Patrol Super Safari has since also spawned more off-road capable factory modified Middle East market Falcon and Gazelle editions.

If pitched as a resurrection in response market demands in its return for private use, the Y61 has, however, never truly been retired, and remained available for fleet sales to non-governmental international agencies.

In regular service for use in inhospitable terrain and demanding conditions by such organizations during its 2010-2017 “hiatus”, such vehicles were more basic and utilitarian variants, whereas the revived Super Safari is a more sportily styled and better-equipped variant with extensive and more up-to-date comfort, convenience and tech features.

Refreshingly uncomplicated

Boxy, chunky and upright, the Super Safari’s ruggedly utilitarian styling is virtually unchanged for it revival run, bar for the addition of more muscularly defined wheel arches, slightly redesigned light elements and the addition of two-tone paint, tailgate spoiler and new alloy wheel design.

With a big glasshouse and low, level waistline allowing for good visibility, the Super Safari’s design is refreshingly uncomplicated and easier on the eye with its horizontal emphasis, airy cabin and low wheel-arch to bonnet height, than more complicated and vertically-oriented modern SUVs.

Renowned for its durability, the Super safari’s thoroughly proven naturally-aspirated large displacement 4.8-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine carries over. Capable of handling huge power upgrades at the hands of aftermarket tuners, the Super Safari’s engine is relatively unstressed in its stock factory state.

Developing 280BHP at a low-revving 4,800rpm and a more substantial 332lb/ft torque at 3,600rpm on the more generous “gross” rating, as advertised, the Patrol’s engine is, however, estimated to produce perhaps around 248BHP and 310lb/ft by the more widely used ‘net’ rating system.

Ruggedly smooth

A silky smooth “straight six” with a responsive yet relaxed demeanour, the Super Safari’s engine is progressively linear in delivery.

Pulling well from tick-over to redline, it is confident and capable, if not excessive, but delivers good low-end response, a versatile mid-range and an eager, if low-revving, top-end.

Driving the rear wheels — under normal conditions — through a smooth shifting 5-speed automatic gearbox, the Super Safari’s engine is perhaps thirsty compared to more modern engines, but nevertheless carries its significant 2.5-tonne estimated heft through 0-100km/h in approximately 10-seconds.

Built on a rugged ladder-frame chassis and riding on multi-link coil spring suspension with good articulation, the Super Safari is designed with off-road ability and durability in mind, and even features an electric-driven winch embedded in the front bumper.

For traversing rough terrain, the Super Safari features good 215mm ground clearance and 47° side slope and 38.7° grade capability, while short overhangs allow generous 37° approach, 27° ramp and 31° departure angles.

Its off-road abilities are meanwhile underpinned by its tough four-wheel-drive system that includes low range gears and a locking rear differential for more demanding conditions.

Sturdy and spacious

An unassailable off-road beast, the Super Safari nevertheless avails itself well on-road. Tough but comfortably compliant, its suspension and tall tyres provide a cushioned and settled ride quality, making short shrift of big and sudden bumps and potholes.

In handling and manoeuvrability, the Patrol certainly isn’t a corner carving road racer, but isn’t particularly unwieldy either. It is instead confident, balanced and predictable through corners, and comparatively well contains body roll, while steering is light and user-friendly, if not layered with nuance and feedback.

Confidently planted and stable on highway, the Super Safari has an impregnably sturdy sense of insulated refinement, which extends to cabin quality.

Airy and spacious, it comfortably seats front and middle row passengers, and features twin side folding third row seats to accommodate a total complement of seven.

Styling is meanwhile elegantly uncomplicated, with user-friendly controls and instruments, and plenty of storage space. Updated in presentation and materials, the Patrol’s cabin incorporates more contemporary amenities including an infotainment screen system, reversing camera, and automatic climate control.

Bachir Gemayel, Sales and Marketing Director, Al Masaood Automobiles argues that the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is a step ahead of other SUVs

nissan patrol super safari history

The exceptional design, impressive technologies and vibrant performance of the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari are a perfect blend that works in sync to deliver a pleasurable overall driving experience to its owners. This drives the popularity of the Nissan Super Safari model further upwards, consistently winning the hearts of many car enthusiasts in the UAE who are in search of new off-roading adventures.

As a reflection of its growing popularity, Al Masaood Automobiles, the official distributor of Nissan in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, witnessed a 30 per cent sales increase in the Patrol Super Safari during the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. A large 90 per cent of its buyers were male customers whilst 10 per cent were female as reported by the company.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari continues the rich heritage of the Nissan brand in the region and showcases the Patrol’s undisputed standing in the UAE’s automotive culture. It comes as no surprise that a growing number of women drivers are gravitating towards this model, as they, like their male counterparts, invest more in and value its class-leading power.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari picks up where the previous models had left off. It builds on the SUV’s immense popularity amongst car owners in the UAE and the region who are after powerful vehicle performance designed for off-roading adventures.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 offers enhanced performance supported by a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which can produce 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, the Patrol Super Safari, which is available in a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, delivers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway.

Equipped with many capabilities and aesthetic features, it boasts a unique exterior and interior design for a memorable driving experience. Staying true to the Nissan identity, it incorporates features that combine strength, stability, control and robust performance even on rough terrains.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022 is available across Al Masaood Automobiles showrooms in Abu Dhabi in colours black, white and gold, with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. In addition, the striking `Super Safari’ decal can be seen along the side of the car, complemented by a set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Customers mainly gravitated towards the black and twilight grey colour combination in 2021– accounting for 49 per cent of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari sales during the period. However, the radiance of the white hue proved to be a great driver of customer demand in 2022. During the first quarter of this year, the white Patrol Super Safari units constituted 52 per cent of the total sales.

As for its interior, the new model sports luxurious leather seats with a special Super Safari emboss that adds a unique touch to the model’s overall appeal. It also includes a display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and a wireless charger for added comfort and convenience. Its advanced technologies are amongst the highlights of the Patrol Super Safari, reflecting Nissan’s commitment to building vehicles with outstanding features that can level up the overall experience of its customers whilst on the road.

The Super Safari 2022 offers a host of Nissan safety features, including cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system that prevents understeer when entering or exiting a corner, and dual-front SRS airbags that reflect Nissan’s attention to the smallest details of security and safety in its models.

Providing the right features and technologies to instill confidence and guarantee reliability and stability at various road conditions, the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari is without a doubt a step ahead of other SUVs in its segment.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022: upgrades announced for the off-road stalwart

It was tough before, but now the uae favourite has had a series of enhancements that have taken it to the next level.

Never one to let the blowing dust settle around the wheels of its most popular vehicles, Nissan has announced a series of upgrades and adjustments for the 2022 Super Safari, the most hardcore of the Patrol breed .

This offshoot of the UAE’s most popular car is easily distinguishable from the standard version, standing higher and looking just a little bit more high-spirited.

The latest Super Safari comes with a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451Nm of torque. You can get the car in a five-speed automatic or manual transmission version.

The 2022 car has greater ground clearance, allowing it to tackle harsh gradients with more ease. It also has a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, with telescopic shock absorbers and a torsion bar, which should make the ride smoother.

In addition to the usual electronic power steering, the Super Safari is also equipped with a range of Nissan’s intelligent mobility features.

These include cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, airbags, and a system that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner. Not a feature those into drifting would approve of.

Inside, drivers can opt to have the seats and cabin decked out in PVC, fabric, or tan leather, with the latter being adorned with a special Super Safari emboss.

The new vehicle now comes in three colours — black, white, or gold — with a choice of grey or gold flourishes across the roof, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. That is all set off, of course, with the bold Super Safari decal along the side, just to drive the point home.

The Patrol is now in its 70th year of production , with a special edition being unveiled at Expo 2020 . The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line specific to the Middle East.

The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available in the UAE at Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai. It has a starting price of Dh153,000 ($41,654).

Driven in the UAE: 2021 Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Auto test drives.

Amidst clamour for luxury SUVs, this fabled iteration of an iconic off-roader stands tall

auto safari

Introduced towards the end of 1951, the Nissan 4W60 — later named Patrol — had a relatively slow start. But over the decades, helped by the much improved G60, the MQ, and the GQ iterations, the Patrol nameplate established itself as a badge to be reckoned with among off-road enthusiasts. However, it was the fifth-generation Y61 version that truly cemented its now legendary status as a go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle. While it was popular in markets such as Australia and South America too, in the Middle East, the Nissan Patrol almost became an integral part of the landscape. This was especially so here in the UAE. The Y61 Patrol Safari was so popular among the country’s off-roading enthusiasts that it was safe at the time to assume that it would only evolve at a pace similar to that of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. It seemed too good to be altered, and was etched into the collective psyche of the region’s dune-bashers.

However, as rival brands started churning out capable SUVs loaded with luxury trappings that appealed as much to the affluent city driver as it did to the daring explorer, the Safari started looking archaic. The modern, comfortable, luxurious, and sophisticated Y62 interpretation of the legendary Patrol was launched in 2010, complete with a new platform, a design overhaul, an interior that oozed luxury, a new V8 engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a new, more capable four-wheel drive system. Sales figures show that was a wise decision, but what seemed a wiser decision to Patrol aficionados was the one taken by the Japanese carmaker to keep the Y61 in production alongside the new version.

auto safari

The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line of the Y61 that is specific to the Middle East. While it essentially remains the same for the 2021 model year, a few tweaks and additions here and there have made sure it remains suitably updated. These include three new colour combinations, with a black exterior colour option joining the existing white and gold body colours. Also available as an option is a new gold accent across the roof, bumpers and spare tyre cover as an alternative to the dual tone accent from previous models, letting owners create the combination of their choice. The classic ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car has also got a subtle refresh. New 17-inch alloy wheels with a ‘diamond cut’ pattern and black paint rounds out the exterior upgrades.

auto safari

The interiors of the 2021 Super Safari have also been updated with new tan leather and cloth options to choose from. If you choose the tan leather option, the seats come with a special Super Safari embossing. A new 8-inch display and audio system with Apple Carplay add a touch of modernity to the otherwise delectably utilitarian cabin.

auto safari

The rest of the good-old Safari remains the same. The 4.8-litre inline six-cylinder mated to five-speed automatic is superbly capable, refined and smooth on- and off-road. While an adventure-oriented three-door variant is still available, the five-door model is as practical and comfortable as any modern SUV and is still a great family car. It can easily seat seven passengers thanks to the two foldout cargo-area seats, which are also reasonably comfortable. It also comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in cool box, making it an ideal companion for impulsive detours into the wilderness with family or friends.

auto safari

And the rough country brings the best out of the Super Safari, with its straight-line drive transfer allowing on-the-fly shifting from 2WD to 4WD with just one shift of a lever. The navigation system, rear locking differential, front and rear-pintle tow hooks as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera make sure you are ready for anything that the mountains, the desert or the back woods throw at you. Stability control and a tyre-pressure monitor are standard, as are dual front airbags, ABS, an immobiliser and cruise control.

auto safari

A single model lasting six decades and still going strong is no mean feat. Not more than a handful of cars have managed to achieve this in the history of automobiles. And even as the Patrol nameplate keeps evolving in its successive iterations, if Nissan chooses to keep the Y61 going with periodic updates, there will still be takers. And they will tell you why this is one of the best SUVs on sale today.

Patrol 70th Anniversary

70th Anniversary collage

70 Years of Patrol

Known as the Hero of All Terrains, the Nissan Patrol is a cut above the rest – combining power and rugged capabilities with opulent luxury to offer an unparalleled driving experience. The Patrol’s 70-year legacy is testament to the powerful connections that it has formed with drivers over the decades as a true partner, enriching the lives of families and communities from around the world.

The Patrol nameplate has remained an unchanging testament to Nissan engineering, despite the fact that the car has changed dramatically over the years in terms of design, performance, role, and technology. It is still one of the world's most loved and respected SUVs, having earned its reputation in the scorching heat of deserts, rugged mountain slopes, and modern city streets – a genuine hero of all terrains. This four-wheel drive vehicle has also amassed an enviable reputation and trophy cabinet including three Guinness World Records in addition to becoming the first car to climb Japan’s revered Mount Fuji, a 2500-meter ascent.

But, even more important than the car itself, are its many owners over the years – the legends of the Patrol who have brought its legacy to life. The Patrol is distinguished by its drivers' diverse and unique experiences, each of whom has their own story to tell. This year, as the Patrol celebrates its 70th anniversary, we honor this enduring human connection that embodies the Patrol's true and lasting legacy.

A Timeline of Legends

4W60 SERIES (1st Gen)

60 SERIES (2nd Gen)

The Patrol began conquering global terrains as a consumer-friendly model, making history as the first motorized vehicle to cross the grueling Simpson Desert in Australia, winning admiration from American audiences including ‘King of the Cowboys’ Roy Rogers, and becoming a symbol of self-reliance for the Indian Army with the ‘Jonga’.

160 PATROL (3rd Gen)

160 PATROL (3rd Gen)

This AC-equipped, family-friendly generation saw the Patrol conquer the hearts of people across the world. It became the first Nissan vehicle to be manufactured in Europe, and in 1987, the Nissan Patrol Fanta Limon became the first diesel vehicle to bag a top 10 finishing position in the Paris-Dakar rally.

Y60 PATROL (4th Gen)

Advanced technical and aesthetic styling upgrades enabled the Patrol to offer the best of comfort and performance – cementing its position as the vehicle of choice amongst on-road and off-road driving enthusiasts.

Y61 PATROL (5th Gen)

Y61 PATROL (5th Gen)

Stepping into the modern age, the Patrol became a benchmark for reliability while catering to the evolving expectations of buyers. The Middle East’s undying love for this off-roader resulted in its exclusive return to the market as the Patrol Super Safari in 2016.

Y62 PATROL (6th Gen)

Y62 PATROL (6th Gen)

2010-present.

The most advanced, sophisticated and rugged Patrol to date, this generation has broken three Guinness World records since its launch, and became the first to sport a NISMO version with a V8 engine tuned to perfection by Nissan's legendary  Takumi  craftsmen team behind building GT-R engines.

Celebrating the legends behind the wheel

From first car to dream car, the Patrol has been at the center of adventures for decades. This year, as we commemorate 70 years of exciting and memorable experiences behind the wheel, we celebrate Patrol Legends – those whom without, the Patrol’s iconic legacy would not have been possible.

My obsession with the Nissan Patrol began in 1980. My father worked for a company in Damascus and drove a 1980 Nissan Safari. I cleaned the car every day and drove it without my father's knowledge. Then, in 1988, I moved to the UAE and worked for a private company for four years. In 1996, I purchased a Nissan Super Safari. It was a magnificent car, externally modified and striking to the point where everyone who saw it stopped me and asked if I could buy it. At the end of 2014, I began looking for a used Nissan Patrol car that fit my needs. My family and I visited every car market in the UAE. I looked through more than five cars at Al Dana Trade but couldn't find a good one. I resumed my search for a Patrol, to the point where most car dealership owners who see me ask if I've found a Patrol or not. My friend and I returned to Al-Awir on the same day as we were leaving Abu Dhabi. I found a Nissan Patrol 2013, full optioned, white on the outside and beige on the inside, within an hour. My car arrived on the Abu Dhabi Corniche at exactly twelve o'clock on January 1, 2015, with the launch of fireworks to celebrate the New Year, and my family and I celebrated the arrival of my Nissan Patrol.

I owned the Patrol 2001 for 14 years driving the car with my entire family to reach 900,000. My father purchased it in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and it was completely green. It has a very strong memory in my family, a story that books and newspapers will not be able to write about. It brings tears to my eyes, as if it were one of my brothers.

nissan patrol super safari history

The Nissan Patrol Y61 was the best car in my life when I was younger. I was going to wash the car after my father got home from work, as I usually did when he was sleeping. While I was washing the car, an idea struck me. I reasoned that I should fill the tank and save my father the trouble of driving all the way to the Patrol station. I didn't hesitate and filled the tank as well as the reserve tank with the hose of water. Later that evening, my father went out in the car, and after about 5 kilometers, the car broke down. After contacting my cousin, who is knowledgeable about automobiles, they determined that there is water in the tank rather than fuel. My father returned home and tried to figure out who had done this. When my father spoke to me, he quickly realized that I was the one who had done this. I was severely punished, and I am still mocked for it. Only then did I realize how valuable a car can be to a person. When I was older, I got the same car and learned to drive.

I've had my Nissan Patrol Platinum 2020 for over a year. It's fantastic; you can't imagine how much prestige this car carries. I'm happy when I see someone who owns my car on the road because it makes me happy because I ride in the same car and sad because I can't see my car from the outside when I drive it. When I try it for off-roading, it always makes me feel proud. In terms of strength, the car is on a different level, and I don't need to press hard on the gas at any height or hill; on the contrary, driving the car is very smooth. When I drive it for long distances, my family and I feel completely at ease because I have children of various ages who are all happy to ride it and enjoy it. The chairs' comfort is excellent, and the spaciousness is commensurate with the size of the vehicle. I adore Nissan Patrol and always recommend it to my colleagues and friends; they even suspected that I was a Nissan representative. In comparison to everything else you own, I believe the price of the car is very reasonable.

nissan patrol super safari history

My relationship with Nissan Patrol began when I was a child, when my father owned a Patrol in 2000. My father purchased a 2009 Patrol Super Safari for me when I moved to university, and it lasted about three years. As a fan of road trips and the new Patrol pick-up, I purchased a 2013 Patrol Hardtop Safari, which lasted a year. After two years of use, I was offered an exorbitant sum to sell it, which I did, and I now own another Patrol pickup for myself, in addition to the one with my father. The appeal to people, as I made numerous offers to sell it, and one of these offers piqued my interest, and I sold it and insisted on purchasing this generation again. I sought out an original 1997 Patrol Super Safari and completely restored it, supplying it with tb48 engines due to my fondness for this engine. I've had a Nissan Patrol since I was a child, so it's like a member of the family.

My Nissan Patrol story began in 1993, when I obtained my driver's license. My father, may God have mercy on him, purchased a Nissan Patrol for me from the dealership. I was very pleased with it, and I had a great time driving it. Years passed, and I bought many cars, but the longing for this lover remained, as it is difficult to forget the way she drives. That is why I tasked one of my car maintenance experts to track down this golden generation. After a long wait, my friend informed me that he had what I was looking for, so I purchased it right away, and I am now using it as a classic car.

In 1997, I was on a road trip with my father, may God have mercy on him. I was about 9 years old at the time. We were out for a walk in the woods. It was getting late, and it was time to go home. But my father's car became stuck in the sand, and when night fell, the car was still stuck, and I was terrified. After 3 hours, I was crying out of fear, and the night was dark. I was very happy when a car came to us; the owner of the car rescued us, and I asked my father, "Do you know this person who rescued us?" Our car is larger than his. My father told me that his car is extremely powerful. I inquired about his vehicle. Nissan Patrol, he said. I've always admired that car and wished to own one when I was older. I purchased my first Nissan Patrol in 2006, and here we are in 2021, and I still own two Nissan Patrols.

nissan patrol super safari history

My first trip with my family as a child was in a 1997 Nissan Super Safari owned by my father, and my uncle also owned a Patrol. When I was younger, the trip from the Emirates to Oman was one of the most beautiful I'd ever taken. My fascination with Nissan began with my father's ownership of the Patrol. I had a Patrol Safari in 2005, and then I had a Patrol with a 400-horsepower engine, a 2013 model, and it was one of the most beautiful vehicles I'd ever driven. Unfortunately, the vehicle was written off due to an accident, and I was unable to switch from Nissan, so I purchased a 2015 model and am now the proud owner of a 2020 Patrol Super Safari. Patrol is an enthralling story with no end in sight.

My relationship with the legendary Nissan Patrol: A car that I admired since I was a child until I purchased it, and what I admire most about it is its strength and toughness on bumpy roads, as well as its durability in the harshest conditions. One of its most appealing features is that it includes two differentials. In the past, my friend's car became stuck in the sand and he was unable to escape. My other friend arrived with a car to help him out, but he was unable to do so. I arrived with the Patrol, and thanks to God and then the Patrol's Power, I was able to pull him out of the sand. On the bumpy roads, the car never let me down.

I really liked the car and used it to travel to a lot of places. I returned to places like Taif, the eastern region, and Jeddah. It is a very practical and beautiful car, and it is one of the best cars available. It has a V8 400 engine, and the specifications and luxury of the interior cabin are excellent. In addition, the comfort and hydraulic suspension system provided me with a stunning appearance for the Y62 Patrol. It truly is the all-terrain hero.

Since my father purchased the Patrol Super Safari when I was a child, I've had a crush on Nissan. I have wonderful memories. As I grew older, I continued to own the same car and took better care of it. I will never forget my trips to the Al-Baha region in the mountains and valleys, and then to Riyadh. The sand stories, particularly Al-Thumama, were fascinating. Beautiful days that I will never forget.

I was driving from Najran to Dubai, a distance of over 1800 kilometers, and it was very dark. The sign that tells me how many kilometers remain was on the other side of the road, and a large truck was passing by in the opposite direction. Because of the very dark roads and truck lights, I mistook the sign for a camel and had to deviate from the road. The Patrol took me on a bumpy ride through some dunes until I was able to come to a halt. I went down to look for damage, which I expected to find in abundance, but the car was in perfect condition. I had a few other incidents on the same road where I had to deviate, but the car proved to be tough and durable and was unaffected each time.

The Nissan Patrol is the family's preferred vehicle. While on a wild picnic, someone came to us for assistance because his car had become stuck in the sand. We were surprised that it was a four-wheel drive, but was buried in the sand. So we took it out with ease with the help of our Patrol, and he looked at us and said, "I'll buy like your Patrol." There are numerous other stories that attest to the Patrol, ranging from off-roading to city driving.

nissan patrol super safari history

DUBAI, UAE – Nissan has announced the rebirth of its legendary Patrol Super Safari in the Middle East, one of the most coveted off-road vehicles ever sold in the region. The Patrol Super Safari's long-standing heritage in the region has lasted with every passing generation, achieving iconic status among gulf nationals and expats alike.

"The return of the legendary Patrol Super Safari reflects Nissan's willingness not only to listen to its regional customers, but to also respond to their wishes," said Samir Cherfan, managing director of Nissan Middle East. "The Patrol Super Safari's return is the direct result of customer demand for this legendary vehicle that has a strong heritage with the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. Widely considered as one of the few truly all-terrain vehicles of modern time, the Patrol Super Safari continues to impress with its inherent ruggedness, durability and ability to cope with the extremes of the varied terrains and temperatures prevalent in this region."

The re-imagined Nissan Patrol Super Safari retains all the elements that have elevated the vehicle to iconic status like its rugged design and off-road capability, while delivering a modern approach complimented by the special upgrades and enhancements. It marries legendary off-road capability with modern day comfort. Designed to be a remarkable off-road vehicle while maintaining all the comforts of a road going full size SUV, the Patrol Super Safari incorporates some of the latest innovation and features that Nissan customers have come to expect.

Key highlights

The 2017 Patrol Super Safari boasts all-new tan leather seats and door trim with 8-way power seats for the driver and 4-way for the front passenger. New driver aids include a navigation system as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera, Bluetooth, USB, CD, auxiliary input socket and FM/AM radio to complete the in-car entertainment offering.  The vehicle comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in, refrigerated cool box.

Building on the iconic Super Safari model, the New Nissan Patrol Super Safari enjoys the legendary exterior design, which has distinguished it from other Patrol models and made it one of the most recognized icons of modern off-road vehicles. Distinctive machine cut 17" black alloy wheels, dual-tone body colors, flared fenders, a rear spoiler and a Super Safari body stripe all build on its iconic looks.

The Patrol Super Safari boasts a 4.8L DOHC in-line 6-cylinder engine producing 280hp and a mighty 46kg or 451Nm of torque that allows it to power up dunes or tow heavy objects with ease. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) keep everything on the straight and narrow while driving on the highway.

Dual front airbags, ABS, an immobilizer and cruise control are among the other features contributing to both safety and driver convenience, while the vehicle boasts rear locking differentials, an electric front winch, as well as front and rear tow hooks as standard equipment for desert use.

Complementing the existing Patrol line up which includes the V8, V6 and Patrol NISMO, Cherfan is confident that the market for the Patrol Super Safari is a healthy one thanks to its captive audience and devoted fans.

"We know this vehicle will appeal to many customers who have grown up with the Super Safari brand, and as new generations come to know the Patrol Super Safari, they too will appreciate its legendary capability and appreciate its deep-rooted heritage in the region's culture," said Cherfan.

Patrol Super Safari 2022

  • Aesthetic and technological upgrades complement visual identity and luxury of the legendary SUV

Dubai, UAE (14 March 2022) – Building on the success of the legendary Patrol Super Safari, Nissan announces aesthetic and technological upgrades for the 2022 model to cater to the evolving needs of buyers in the region. Conquering the harshest of terrain for almost seventy years, the Patrol has built a legacy in the Middle East, composed of a deep-rooted heritage, power, and superior off-road capability.

The rugged appeal of the Patrol Super Safari is available with a choice of three bold exterior colours – black, white, or gold – with a unique choice of grey or gold accents across the roof, bumpers, wheel arches, and spare tyre cover for drivers to create a combination of their choice. The striking ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car is complemented by a bold set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels that contribute to the SUV’s head-turning presence.

Inside, drivers can opt to have the cabin with PVC, woven fabric, or tan leather seats, with the latter adding a unique touch through a special Super Safari emboss. In addition to 2 DIN display audio system with smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay, drivers also benefit from a newly installed wireless charger for added comfort and convenience.

Thierry Sabbagh, Managing Director, Nissan Middle East said: “The region’s sustained love and demand for the Patrol Super Safari is reflective of the deep-rooted heritage of this all-terrain vehicle with the people of the Middle East and its compatibility with the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. The 2022 model retains the Super Safari’s off-road prowess, offering customers in the Middle East value and convenience through the integration of innovative design and technological elements.”

Thrilling performance is provided by a 4.8-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451 Nm of torque. Equipped with VTC and NICS, in addition to a 5-speed automatic or manual transmission, the Patrol Super Safari offers exceptional off-road performance and impressive top speed on the highway. A straight-line drive transfer and rear differential lock further the Patrol’s performance and allow it to explore places where other SUVs don’t dare to go.

Built for adventure, the Patrol Super Safari’s higher angle of stability, improved gradeability, and the larger approach, departure, and ramp-clearance angles, are all furthered by a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, incorporating telescopic shock absorbers and torsion bar, for confident handling on all terrain.

In addition to electronically controlled power steering that ensures effortless control at low speeds and firm handling at high speeds, the Patrol Super Safari is equipped with a host of Nissan Intelligent Mobility features for a safer and more connected driving experience. This includes cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, dual-front SRS airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner.

The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available at Nissan’s partner network across the Middle East including, Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi, YK AlMoayyed & Sons in Bahrain, Arabian Automobiles Co. in Dubai, Anwar Babel Co. in Iraq, Bustami & Saheb Co. in Jordan, Abdulmohsen Abdulaziz Al Babtain in Kuwait, Rasamny-Younis Motor Company (RYMCO) in Lebanon, Suhail Bahwan Automobiles in Oman, Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana Co. in Qatar, and Tehama Trading Co. in Yemen.

Renault hands Russian assets to Moscow

Moscow (AFP) – French automaker Renault has handed over its Russian assets to the Russian government, both parties announced Monday, marking the first major nationalisation since the onset of sanctions over Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine.

Issued on: 16/05/2022 - 09:08

Renault controlled 68 percent of AvtoVAZ, the largest carmaker in Russia with the country's top brand Lada, but was under pressure to pull out of the country since Russia's military intervention in Ukraine.

Renault has funnelled billions of euros into the Soviet-era factory since the two automotive makers signed a strategic partnership agreement in 2008.

No financial details were provided but Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said in April that Renault planned to sell its Russian assets for "one symbolic ruble".

"Agreements were signed on the transfer of Russian assets of the Renault Group to the Russian Federation and the government of Moscow," the industry and trade ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Under the agreement Renault will retain a six-year option to buy back the stake in AvtoVAZ.

The deal also included Renault's Moscow plant, Avtoframos, which makes Renault and Nissan models.

"Today, we have taken a difficult but necessary decision; and we are making a responsible choice towards our 45,000 employees in Russia, while preserving the Group's performance and our ability to return to the country in the future, in a different context," Renault chief executive Luca de Meo said in a statement.

Contacted by AFP, Renault refused to confirm whether it had sold its Russian assets for one ruble.

Thanks to AvtoVAZ, Russia was Renault Group's second-largest market behind Europe last year, with around half a million vehicles sold.

'New page in history'

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said production of passenger cars at the Renault plant would resume under the Soviet-era Moskvich brand after the French automaker decided to close it.

"This is its right, but we cannot allow thousands of workers to be left without work," Sobyanin said in a statement.

"In 2022, we will open a new page in the history of Moskvich," he added.

"We will try to keep most of the team directly working at the plant and with its subcontractors."

Since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in late February, Renault has had difficulty keeping its operations going due to a lack of components following the imposition of Western sanctions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in March called on Renault and other French companies to quit Russia. Kyiv also urged a boycott of Renault vehicles until it pulls out of Russia.

On February 24, Putin ordered Russian troops to pour into pro-Western Ukraine, triggering unprecedented Western sanctions against Russia and sparking an exodus of foreign corporations including H&M, McDonald's and Ikea.

The authorities said they were ready to nationalise foreign assets, and some officials assured Russians that their favourite brands would have domestic alternatives.

Officials in Moscow have sought to downplay the gravity of the Western sanctions, promising that Russia will adapt and taking steps to stop the flight of foreign currency and capital.
