5SOS toured with One Direction in 2014 and the boys have just opened up about what it was like supporting the biggest boyband in the world.

5SOS accompanied One Direction on their 'Take Me Home', 'Where We Are' and 'On The Road Again' tours from 2013 to 2015, two years after first forming their group.

And as the Aussie lads, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford, are at the peak of stardom they’ve finally shared what it was like to tour with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik , Liam Payne , Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson .

Speaking to Apple Music’s Beats 1 Chart show host Brooke Reese, Ashton said working alongside 1D was “awesome”.

He said: “Something we found when we toured with One Direction a couple of years ago, was obviously we were younger guys in two bands, but we were a rock band. And putting that with a boy band at the time was an awesome, diverse tour."

The One Direction lads became good friends with 5SOS when Louis found their videos on YouTube and they went on to form a long-lasting bromance.

5SOS recently confessed they'd like to see the 1D lads reunite, but Luke pointed out: "not at the sake of their own happiness".

Last week 5SOS returned to the Summertime Ball stage and their set was definitely one to remember.

Luke Hemmings let everyone know he's got one of the best voices in the industry as Ashton, Calum and Michael smashed their way through a stadium set including brand new hit 'Easier', crowd favourites 'Youngblood' and 'She Looks So Perfect.'

They also took us back to 2014 with ‘Amnesia’, which had everyone feeling all kinds of emotional before ending on banger ‘Youngblood’ to close in epic fashion.

The boys had everyone in stitches backstage at the Summertime Ball after they were challenged by Capital Breakfast Show host Roman Kemp to swap phones and show each other’s camera rolls.

After Luke took Ashton’s phone and Calum took Michael’s, we knew we were going to see something pretty unique – both Luke and Calum flashed some pretty dodgy and hilarious selfies.

The Take Me Home Tour  was the second headlining concert tour by British-Irish boy band One Direction.  Announced by member Liam Payne at the 2012 BRIT Awards in early 2012, the original concert tour was billed as the UK & Ireland Arena Tour. In mid-2012, the concert tour expanded with legs in North America and Australasia. The concert tour visited arenas and stadiums from February through November 2013. The concert tour commenced at London's O2 Arena on 23 February 2013.

5 Seconds Of Summer's U.S. Tour Takeover To Meet Up With One Direction Again

Thought One Direction's upcoming Where We Are Tour couldn't get any hotter? Well, think again because the boys of 5 Seconds Of Summer will be joining them on the road.

The pop-rock Australian boy band, consisting of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin, are no stranger to the 1D scene, since they opened for the group on their worldwide Take Me Home Tour in 2013.

However, all you 5SOS fans won't have to wait until August to see them take the stage in the states, because the group announced their first ever North American tour. The tour, which sold out in minutes, kicks off on April 11 in San Francisco and stops in 10 cities across the U.S. and Canada.

"We are so excited about playing our first ever North American headline tour," said the band in a statement. "Our U.S. fans are absolutely crazy! We love it! Can't wait to see everyone in April."

Just last month, the group, who recently signed with Capitol Records, released their worldwide debut single, "She Looks So Perfect," which also serves as the title track to their upcoming four-song EP, due out April 1. The upbeat pop-punk song showcases the band's fun and flirty vibe, as they sing about young love. And if you haven't heard it yet, take Niall Horan's advice because "you need this tune in your life."

The group, who play all their own instruments, also released the video for the single, which has people escaping the Australian heat by stripping down to their underwear. Unfortunately, the boys don't get in on the action, but fans don't seem to mind since the video topped 1 million views in its first 24 hours of release.

5 Seconds of Summer on tour with One Direction

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) fit the boy-band mould: four young men with a feverish female fan base touring with the British megastars One Direction. But the Australian pop-rock group identify more with Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy than Harry Styles.

“I [grew up] watching, you know, live rock ’n’ roll bands and I wanted to be like Tre Cool from Green Day,” says 5SOS’s drummer Ashton Irwin, 20. “To be called a boy band coming from those roots and writing our own songs and starting in the garage, I don’t think it’s the correct term for us.”

The group's first full-length, self-titled album debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200's albums chart this week after selling 259,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. 5SOS's debut single, She Looks So Perfect , became a Top 40 hit and the follow-up, Amnesia , has peaked at No 16.

Irwin says the “high-energy rock album” was inspired by guitar bands of the 1990s and early 2000s, including Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World, as well as contemporary performers such as Imagine Dragons.

Despite that, One Direction have had some influence on 5SOS.

“We’ve become comfortable. I think we’re just really very used to having each other on the same tour,” says Irwin. “They’ve had us on their tour for two years now.”

The Canadian and United States leg of One Direction’s Where We Are stadium tour kicked off on August 1 in Toronto, where 5SOS opened.

“The way they treat their crew and stuff like that, it’s a real family-type environment and really we look up to that,” Irwin says.

The rising band are also performing for larger audiences: 5SOS announced this week they would headline an arena tour next year.

Despite their early success, social-media stardom and devoted fan following, the band – who include the vocalist Luke Hemmings, the guitarist Michael Clifford and the bassist Calum Hood – are taking their new-found fame in their stride.

“I don’t see us as having any fame factor,” said Hemmings. “We’re just dudes in a band who play some stuff.”

They also co-write most of their music that, like the break-up song Amnesia , focuses on love and ­heartache.

“It feels nice to write about girls because it gets it off your chest,” said Clifford. “It’s good.”

But there’s no time for love.

“[We’re)] married to the band, we always say,” says Hood.

"We discovered 5SOS on YouTube last year and we all knew straight away they were very special," 1D's Niall Horan says. "We're so excited to have them on the road with us and we know our fans are going to LOVE what these lads do."

And 5SOS couldn't be more stoked! "None of this has sunk in for us; it's surreal to think we will be on the same bill as a band who are on such a world-wide scale."

Louis Tomlinson was the one who originally found them on Youtube. "A little while ago, a lad by the name of Louis Tomlinson stumbled across a video of ours on Youtube," 5SOS say. " He showed the rest of the guys and they really liked what we were doing."

All Time Low is one of their biggest musical inspirations.

Their latest album is called 'Unplugged' and it's available on iTunes.

Our fave rockers Five Seconds of Summer  have opened up about that time they toured with our other fave boy band One Direction and we are LIVING.

The boys chatted to Apple Music ’s Beats 1 Chart show host Brooke Reese to celebrate the release of their amazing new single "Easier" and spilt so much tea.

Drummer, Ashton Irwin revealed "Something we found when we toured with One Direction a couple of years ago, was obviously were younger guys in two bands, but we were a rock band. And putting that with a boy band at the time was an awesome, diverse tour."

The Aussie rockers have also recently toured with "Closer" hitmakers The Chainsmokers, whom they also collaborated with on EDM smash "Who Do You Love" .

Ashton dished "I'm intrigued, particularly by the Chainsmokers and their work ethic. They understand what music fans think of them. They understand what the general audience thinks of them. They have a very, very clear understanding of who they are and where they stand in the music industry."

"I've never seen anyone work harder than these guys, and they're going to create a fantastic show" he added.

Details on One Direction’s Secret Financial Investment in 5 Seconds of Summer

When One Direction ­members Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne tweeted at fellow boy banders 5 Seconds of Summer back in February, announcing to their millions of followers that the Aussie pop-rockers had a new single out, casual observers may have chalked up the endorsement to chummy camaraderie. After all, 5 Seconds, which formed a year after 1D debuted on the U.K. X Factor, were represented by the same company, London-based Modest Management, founded by music industry veteran Richard Griffiths .

But relations between the two groups go deeper. According to multiple sources, 1D holds a financial stake in 5SOS. An Aug. 9 report in a U.K. paper was the first to make the connection, reporting that the five members of 1D, which also includes Harry Styles , Zayn Malik and Niall Horan , own a share of London-based company 5SOS LLP. Billboard has since confirmed that the registered partners listed for the company are the four members of 5SOS and One Mode Productions, whose directors include the five members of 1D in addition to Modest’s Griffiths and Will Bloomfield .

According to the documents filed at London’s Companies House, the split allots for 120 shares: 1D holds 50 percent, and the managers hold the other 50. Looking at 5SOS music sales so far, for instance — 788,000 albums and EPs and 2.4 million song downloads sold, per Nielsen SoundScan — that would amount to $250,000 in earnings for Modest and 1D, or $25,000 added to each 1D member’s bank account, Billboard estimates. Consider bigger revenue generators like merchandise, and 1D could see far greater returns.

Of course, that also means the members of 1D have an interest in growing the Aussie pop-rock band, which they have faithfully done. Tweets and public acknowledgements aside, 5SOS has benefited from a 66-date international tour ($277 million grossed since April 25, according to Billboard Boxscore) as 1D’s opener — a trek that has, as many ticket-buying tweens might contend, started to shift 5SOS’ status from warm-up act to more of a co-headliner.

The pairing is a no-brainer, says one insider privy to the arrangement. “The thinking is, ‘The bigger these guys get, the more money we make,’ ” says the source. “They’re going to put someone on as the opening act on the tour anyway, why not put somebody that they have a financial interest in?” Modest principals Griffiths and Harry Magee , who manage both groups, declined to comment, but in an interview with Billboard in March, Magee credited 1D as “early adopters of 5SOS” explaining that Horan and Tomlinson played the music to the rest of the band who agreed 5SOS should support 1D on their arena tour.

Call it the new sharing economy, a far cry from the boy-band boom of the ’90s, when acts like Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync were seen as rivals. Both bands went on to tour arenas and stadiums on their own, but it’s easy to imagine the whole being greater than the sum of its parts if the two had supported one another. “If I had both [BSB and ’N Sync], I’d sit them down for a discussion about them working together,” says Johnny Wright , who has represented both acts and still manages Justin Timberlake . “ New Kids on the Block ’s Donnie Wahlberg , he got it,” he adds, referring to the $40 million-grossing 2011 NKTOBSB tour, which saw the two boy bands hit the road together. “Back in the day, there was this shadow created — that these bands didn’t like each other, but the truth is, when that all started, they hadn’t even met. It was always my vision that audiences of ’NSync and Backstreet Boys could like both bands. Instead, you had to be a Backstreet fan or an ’NSync fan.”

Today, Wright offers: “If you’re going to have a stable of artists, you have to create a family. Take a cue from what Berry Gordy did at Motown, where you had The Temptations, the Four Tops and the Supremes and all the acts went on tour together as part of a Motown Revue.” (Of course, dubious publishing deals were the norm in those days, too.)

No longer a dark secret of the industry, the modern-day version of the profit-sharing model is best demonstrated by partnerships like Cash Money’s, where Lil Wayne has a vested interest in Nicki Minaj , and also Justin Bieber ’s “signing” of Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen to School­boy Records, a Universal Music Group-housed label owned by his manager Scooter Braun . Does that make Braun, who leveraged Bieber’s 20 million-plus Twitter followers to help sell 11 million downloads of “Call Me Maybe,” the new Weezy? He may not have the mic skills, but as a pioneering force in the concept of acts investing in each other (see: Bieber benefactor Usher ), Braun is only looking for more.

“Music is at its best when it’s collaborative, and that can be the art of making music and also of marketing it,” he says. “There’s more than enough to go around. People aren’t limited to only one album or one act. We can all share this together.”

Big Time Rush's Carlos PenaVega Recalls One Direction Opening Their Tour: 'That Was Really Hard for Us'

It may have been a boy band fan's dream come true that One Direction and Big Time Rush once teamed up for a tour, but it wasn't so easy for BTR at the time.

On an episode of the Unplanned podcast , Big Time Rush member Carlos PenaVega opened up about why it was "hard" for the American pop group to have 1D as their openers on their Better With U tour in 2012. The singer, 34, explained that although fans originally bought tickets in support of BTR, it felt as though they ended up being more excited to see the British band.

"After our show, fans were outside the theater chanting for One Direction," PenaVega said.

"That was really hard for us," he revealed.

The singer/actor explained that between the time the "Boyfriend" band's North American tour was announced in fall 2011 to when the group featuring Niall Horan ,  Zayn Malik , Liam Payne ,  Harry Styles  and  Louis Tomlinson was added to the bill, their popularity simply took off.

"Our tour was sold out before they got on. So, they were there to see us," PenaVega recalled. "But it was like The Beatles . It was like a freak of nature. They wanted these five, cute British boys."

The former Nickelodeon star said that the "What Makes You Beautiful" group tried to return the favor, but he and his bandmates Logan Henderson , James Maslow and Kendall Schmidt decided against it.

PenaVega shared, "They offered for us to open for them in the U.K. and our egos got in the way. We were like, 'No. Never.'"

"Probably should have done it," he added. "I mean we were kids. I was like 22. It's hard to control your ego at that age."

Big Time Rush's Better With U Tour was their first national tour across the U.S. and Canada. It followed the release of their second studio album, 2011's Elevate . The string of live dates ran throughout February and March 2012 and featured support from One Direction on select dates, in addition to artists like JoJo and others throughout the tour.

The concerts marked the "Kiss You" band's first shows in the U.S., as they had previously only played live across the U.K. and Ireland. Shortly after the Better With U Tour, 1D brought their own headlining Up All Night Tour, which was in support of their 2011 debut album of the same name, to North America.

While 1D eventually went through lineup changes when Malik, 31, departed the band in 2015 and they officially went on hiatus in 2016, Big Time Rush still remains active.

The "Windows Down" group did go on hiatus in 2014, but reunited in 2021 for select shows , and last year, they dropped their fourth studio album, Another Life . The project marked their first album in a decade, following 2013's  24/seven , and was also their first-ever independently released record.

BTR also set out on a tour throughout much of summer 2023 in support of their comeback .

When the foursome announced their most recent tour in February of last year, they opened up to PEOPLE about what it means to them to be back together again .

"We're not just looking for hits," shared Henderson, 34. "Obviously that's great, but we want to make good music that we are proud of and that's literally what we're striving for. That's why it's taken so long."

Big Time Rush singer Carlos PenaVega opened up about touring with an early One Direction on the Unplanned podcast.

The two boy bands shared the stage in 2012 for BTR’s Better With U tour.

At the time, 1D was fresh off of The X Factor and had released “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Gotta Be You” as singles in the U.K. in 2011.

During their run as openers for BTR, the frenzy over 1D had already begun, and “What Makes You Beautiful” officially dropped as a single in the U.S., debuting at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“After our show, fans were outside the theater chanting for One Direction. That was really hard for us,” PenaVega revealed.

Later, the One Direction boys offered to return the favor in the U.K.

“They offered for us to open for them in the U.K. and our egos got in the way. We were like, ‘No. Never.’ Probably should have done it. I mean we were kids. I was like 22. It’s hard to control your ego at that age,” he explained.

“Respectfully, thank you for saying no bc 5SOS opening for them will always be the most iconic tour of 1D,” one fan joked in the comments of a TikTok video from the podcast.

“I remember this so well Big Time Rush fans were SOOOO MADDDD half the crowd was always gone after 1D JDJDJDJD,” another viewer commented.

Another person echoed the same thing, noting that fans leaving after One Direction’s performance sparked a “war of the fan bases” between 1D stans and BTR fans.

“One Direction opening for them was like a fever dream. 2012 was wild,” someone else said.
