Downtown Orlando is the city’s historic center and has an entirely different vibe. You won’t spot any fantasy castles or cartoon characters on either of DT Orlando’s two main streets. What you will find is a cosmopolitan neighborhood with fantastic public artworks, a spacious lakeside park, museums, and shops. There are places where you can pamper yourself in a luxury spa, catch a comedy show or have a drink in an underground speakeasy. You name it, and DT Orlando has got it.

1. Art Orlando

Grab a map from the DT Orlando Information Center and go on a self-guided tour of DT’s streets to discover the nine contemporary sculptures which are Art Orlando. Not only will you get to know Downtown as you walk around, you’ll be seriously impressed by these stunning works of art.

The Take Flight sculpture decorates the shoreline of Lake Eola and is a flock of metal birds which appear to be caught in eternal flight. Entertainment looms large in Orlando, and thanks to its globally famous and universally loved theme parks, it's a world leader in welcoming families. Millions of people pass through the various Disney and Universal parks every year, often on their very own trip of a lifetime. Beyond the parks, though, there's a wealth of cultural and educational experiences to be had. Space ages past and present come alive at EPCOT and the Kennedy Space Center, and there's a call to nature at Gatorland and the Disney Wilderness Preserve. Downtown Orlando is often overlooked, but make time for Church Street and the Milk District, not to mention the upscale options at Winter Park. Wondering how much you were missing? Church Street District Arrow

Downtown Orlando is a much-overlooked location, especially given the worldwide fame of its surrounding attractions. The neighborhood dates back to the 19th-century, and some of the period aesthetic remains in the form of wrought-iron balconies and bridges and cobbled streets. You won’t find huge malls; rather, smaller boutiques and independent stores and restaurants that offer an interesting alternative to the chains and global brands dominating most of the city.

Quiet green spaces aren’t the first thing that spring to mind when one thinks of Orlando, but thanks to author and journalist Edward E. Bok, the city has at least one park where quiet contemplation and tranquility reign. Bok Tower Gardens consists of 250 acres of beautifully kept parkland that contains it own nature trail and bird sanctuary. It’s a welcome retreat from the clamor of the theme parks and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A hands-on, science-focused museum of sorts has existed here in some form since the mid 1980s, but its modern incarnation opened in 1997. Today the Orlando Science Center is is a huge white building with glass and steel walkways. Across its four floors are eight themed exhibitions that cover a wealth of scientific subjects. The natural world is an especially strong theme, given the importance of the environment in Florida, but there are also dinosaurs and planetary exhibits that will transport minds of all ages to different times and worlds.

Gatorland Arrow

What began as a working farm in the 1950s has since grown into Gatorland, a wildlife attraction in its own right. Unlike the technologically focused parks of most of Orlando, this one has a more rustic, old-fashioned feel, but that doesn’t mean it has any less charisma. It’s now a zoo and sanctuary where you can see alligators up close, whether from the rickety wooden walkways or in a show, from tiny babies to huge adults laying out in the sun or slithering around the swamps and pools that comprise much of the parkland.

Legoland Florida Resort is the largest of all Legoland theme parks. Beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Eloise, the complex offers a huge array of things to do, with exciting rides, chances to build with Lego bricks, Lego reproductions of cities and landmarks, live shows, and a water park. It’s a playful, hands-on atmosphere that has broad appeal for kids and adults alike.

The Milk District Arrow

The Milk District, built up around the TG Lee milk factory that dates back to the 1920s, has been an up-and-coming neighborhood in downtown Orlando since 2008. Over the course of a decade, businesses moved in and events cropped up. Now the area supports a community of stores, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. There’s a funky, DIY feel to the place, with food trucks, colorful street art, and stores, many converted from the industrial buildings that preceded them.

ICON Orlando, an entertainment complex, centers around a 400-foot observation wheel—the largest of its kind on the East Coast. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding region; it’s also one of the few places around that lets you ascend that high without also traveling upside down at 50 miles an hour on a coaster. Among the other main attractions are the underwater sights of Sea Life Orlando Aquarium, the celebrity lookalikes of Madame Tussaud’s Orlando, the 450-feet high swings of the Orlando Star Flyer, and the fascinating skeletons of the Museum of Osteology.

Kennedy Space Center Arrow

The Kennedy Space Center was most famously the launch pad for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969. Today the complex welcomes around 1.5 million visitors a year, and encompasses more than 130 square miles. One of the main draws here is the actual space shuttle, the Atlantis orbiter, which goes hand-in-hand with the Shuttle Launch Experience, an immersive simulator. It’s a comprehensive space experience, with real-life artifacts and spacecraft mixed in with impressive multimedia presentations.

Orlando Museum of Art Arrow

The idea of the Orlando Museum of Art dates back to 1924, but the modern-day facility, with its large, white, rotund exterior, was completed in 1997. The museum presents 10 or 12 onsite exhibitions at a time, and is home to one of the best collections of fine art in Florida. The collection here, which includes 2,400 objects, focuses on American art from the 18th century to the present day and international contemporary art. Paintings and photography are presented alongside textiles, pottery, and mixed media.

Disney Wilderness Preserve Arrow

Part of the price that Disney had to pay to develop so much land was to preserve some of it, and the Disney Wilderness Preserve, a nature conserve, opened to the public in 1992. The park contains around 12,000 acres of lakes and swampland that's home to a diverse selection of animals and plantlife. Interpretive trails wind around the grounds, which feel worlds removed from the clamor of theme parks—like a little a corner of tranquility and natural wonder.

Epcot is actually an acronym and stands for the "Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow." Originally intended to be a utopian version of the future, the park has developed into an educational center and a permanent version of the World’s Fair exhibition. The park's two halves encompass 250 acres; Future World is all about education and entertainment, while World Showcase pays tribute to international cultures. Parents will gain a well-rounded outing and kids will enjoy the interactive nature of the exhibits and, of course, the rides.

Universal Studios Florida Arrow

Once a single park, this facility eventually become two parks and an entertainment complex; Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Universal CityWalk are both stand-alone attractions in their own right. Universal Studios itself is a mix of high-octane rides and meticulously rendered movie sets that immerse park guests. It’s a relatively adult-friendly atmosphere, especially compared to the other major parks, but that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of things for kids. The park is also a working movie production studio.

As Universal Studios grew, its sister theme park, Universal's Islands of Adventures, came into being. Today, it's a world-class theme park all its own, one with some of the most technologically advanced attractions you'll find anywhere in the world. The "islands" break down into Jurassic Park , The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Marvel Super Hero, and Seuss Landing. This park is very much focused on rides rather than elaborate shows, making it slightly more appealing to older children and adults.

Disney's Hollywood Studios Arrow

For nearly 20 years, Disney's Hollywood Studios functioned as a working movie and TV production facility. That stopped in 2004, but today it remains a must-see park themed around Disney films. The attractions are a mix of rides and shows, and there’s also a fair amount of interactive, educational experiences. The most popular ride is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror , arguably Orlando’s scariest ride, set in what looks like an abandoned hotel. The high-speed Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is also a crowd favorite.

1. ride a swan boat at lake eola.

Chances are that if you ask a local, they will tell you that one of the best things to do in downtown Orlando is to visit Lake Eola. One of the greatest features of this lake is the popular swan boat ride attraction.

While riding on the pedal-driven boats, you can take in gorgeous views of the lake, the beautiful swans that have resided at the lake since 1922, and the famous Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain.

The boats are available from 10 AM – 7 PM Sunday through Tuesday and from 10 AM – 9 PM Wednesday through Saturday. You are permitted to bring pets on the boats.

Lake Eola features many more free activities to do that will also be included later in this post!

Each boat ride costs $15 for 30 minutes and can seat up to 5 people. Keep in mind that they only accept cards, not cash.

Note: If you visit on the weekend or in the evening, plan ahead, as they do not take reservations . The activity can build a wait time, and the waitlist can get filled up for the rest of the day.

2. Enjoy a Panoramic City View at AC Sky Bar

One of the more recent sought-after things to do in downtown Orlando is to visit the AC Sky Bar. Located on the 18 th floor of the AC Hotel by Marriott Downtown Orlando, this trendy spot offers indoor seating and an outdoor terrace filled with fireplaces and live music on select days.

The outdoor area provides guests with wonderful 360° scenic views of downtown and even as far as International Drive with clear skies! If you visit during sunset, be prepared for a spectacular sight.

Together with the food menu that offers tapas-style dishes, the drink menu features delicious cocktails and craft beers. Each Sunday, the Sky Bar offers an appetizing brunch where you can enjoy bottomless mimosas.

Keep in mind that no reservations are accepted except for Sunday Brunch. The bar is first come, first served. Brunch hours of operation are from 11 AM – 3 PM on Sundays.

Public parking is available in the garage located below the hotel. Parking is not validated by the bar.

Fan of hidden gems? Then you should take a visit to Mather’s Social Gathering!

Mather’s is a Prohibition-styled speakeasy, one of downtown Orlando’s most unique bars. The vintage furnishings and employee attire illustrate the ambiance and decor of the Roaring Twenties.

Prepare to be impressed by the craft cocktails and appetizers. I highly recommend the Mathers Fizz, Frosé, and charcuterie board!

When you first enter the building, you will be greeted by a bouncer that will guide you to the elevator to reach the third floor. You will then enter a library, and from there, look out for a secret book that will be the entrance to the bar.

Besides Mather’s, downtown is also home to a few other speakeasies, which include Hanson’s Shoe Repair and The Courtesy.

10. Laugh Your Night Away at SAK Comedy Lab

Downtown provides Lime e-bikes for use and several brands to choose from for scooters, including Bird, Lime, and Wheels. As a way to help avoid busy traffic times, there are many bike lanes in the area.

All you’ll need to do to rent a bike or scooter is download the application of your chosen company. After locating one with the app’s GPS, scan the QR code with your mobile device. Safety helmets are available for use.

It will cost $1 to unlock the specific bike or scooter, with a rate of 25 to 35 cents per minute, depending on the company.

Note: Although it may seem enticing, scooters and bikes cannot be ridden at Lake Eola.

12. Explore Thornton Park

Thornton Park is a charming and chic neighborhood outside the Central Business District. Here you can walk around and enjoy the views of the vintage bungalows and gorgeous Spanish moss hanging from trees.

There are plenty of things to do in Thornton Park. The neighborhood features many restaurants, some mentioned earlier, such as Soco Thornton Park, and more, including Graffiti Junction, Ootoya Sushi, and Anthony’s Italian Restaurant. You can also shop till you drop at the different boutiques and shops in the area.

A fun activity is to attend a Wine & Art Walk hosted on the second Thursday of the month. Attendees go on a walking tour at this event, commemorating the local neighborhood. Several local vendors participate in the event.

You’ll find many arts, food, and drink vendors at the Wine & Art Walk in addition to live music entertainment. The Wine & Art Walk tickets are $10 and can be purchased here .

Can You Walk Downtown Orlando?

Downtown Orlando is very walkable! A perk of downtown is that the various attractions are not too far from one another. For example, if you are around Lake Eola, the nightlife hubs around Wall Street and Church Street are only about a 10-minute walk away.

The North Quarter district is home to places like Reyes Mezcaleria is around a mile and a 20- to 30-minute walk from Lake Eola, as well as the entertainment districts located more southward. So, downtown Orlando is still very manageable by foot, bike, or whatever your preferred method of transportation is.

There’s no denying it! Orlando ‘s dizzying rise in fame is due mainly (if not exclusively) to Disney World , Universal Studios , and the other amusement parks that have made it the most visited city in all of Florida in just a few decades, with its more than 50 million visitors a year: more than Miami , more than Key West and every other tourist city in the state.

This has made the hotel industry’s fortune: International Drive and all of Orlando’s outlying areas are teeming with hotels, resorts, and accommodations, with an impressive variety that you can read about in my article on Orlando hotels .

Such growth could not preserve the original spirit of pre-Disney Orlando , which presented itself as a simple central Florida country town of swamps and farms lost in the middle of nowhere. It is said that when it was announced that the Disney parks would be built south of the tiny downtown area, someone commented bitterly on the fact, calling Disney World a “little town in the swamp called Orlando.”

In this article I want to give you some advice on what to see in Orlando outside of the parks (if you are interested in the parks read our guide on the best parks in Orlando ): in the compact and modern downtown, there are museums, skyscrapers, and buildings with a contemporary architectural taste, but also retro neighborhoods and beautiful green spaces, parks, and lakes that deserve a walk.

Orlando boasts a good number of interesting theaters and museums of various kinds. Here are the best ones:

Among the various places of cultural interest in Orlando, this is the most suitable museum for families with children intrigued by the world of nature: in addition to scientific exhibits on prehistory, the human body, astronomy, biology, and physics in general, you can learn about the flora and fauna of the ecosystem of Central Florida .

Children will find dedicated areas with interactive attractions, they can see baby alligators and pick oranges from the Orange Grove (Orlando is famous for these fruits!); older children will be attracted by the CineDome, an impressive mega-screen where scientific documentaries of considerable interest are projected. Strange but true, weddings are often held here.

The Orlando Museum of Art is home to 5 collections of works that draw on the artistic traditions of different cultures throughout the centuries. You’ll find artifacts and artwork from across the Americas and Africa; Native American jewelry, stones, and jewels; and paintings, photographs, and prints by contemporary artists from America and beyond. Also noteworthy are the installations and temporary exhibitions that are set up on the museum’s premises.

In the heart of downtown we find the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts , an ultra-modern theater with sophisticated and striking glass architecture that is at its best at night, when it hosts classical, rock and pop concerts, ballets, dance shows and – for those who haven’t seen them in New York yet – one of the most successful Broadway shows: The Lion King. The advantage is definitely to see a great show at a lower price than at the official New York venue!

Would you like to learn more about the history of Orlando? Would you like to take a trip back in time to see how man related to the Florida wilderness, from prehistoric times to the theme park era? Make your way to E Central Blvd. and enter the historic building that houses the Orange County Regional History Center , an interesting and informative museum with numerous themed exhibits and carefully curated reconstructions of historic buildings, including a 19th century “Pioneer Cabin”.

Parks, neighborhoods, and gardens

Not sure what to do in Orlando ? Well, downtown has some beautiful green spaces where you can spend a relaxing afternoon before venturing out to explore the more interesting neighborhoods of downtown Orlando, one of them being Thornton Park .

Nestled on the banks of Lake Rowena, north of downtown is the fascinating botanical garden of Harry P. Leu , a local businessman who in the 1930s transformed the land around his farm into a lush tropical forest with plants and flowers from every corner of the world. It’s worth wandering aimlessly along the garden’s shady paths, peering here and there at the most unusual plant species, and finally visiting the Leu House , which has preserved the style of an old Florida farmhouse from the late 1800s.

Between one amusement park and another, there is also room for a romantic walk around Lake Eola , recognizable thanks to the elegant fountain that spouts at the center, in harmonious contrast to the skyscrapers of Downtown: it is one of the places of interest in Orlando preferred by tourists, who love to enjoy sailing the lake waters in swan-shaped boats, taking pictures of the landscape and swans (the real ones).

If you’re in town on a Saturday, you’ll find the stalls of the Orlando Farmers Market , which has been located on the southeast corner of the lake since the 1990s, between E Central Blvd and N Eola Dr, just outside the Thornton Park neighborhood .

A quick stop (preferably a food stop) in the Thornton Park neighborhood is a must to complete the restful and pleasant experience of a walk around the adjacent Lake Eola Park. Along Summerlin Avenue and on Washington Street, there is a nice selection of quality restaurants and local eateries where you can sample the cuisine and specialties of Central Florida.

On either side of the neighborhood’s quaint cobblestone streets, you’ll also see a few Craftsman-style log cabins with porches – a good way to get a feel for what a residential neighborhood looked like in turn-of-the-century Florida

Orlando’s central location is quite a fortunate one: from here you can reach both coasts of Florida, or organize a multi-day tour to Miami, Key West and Everglades National Park. Let’s see what are the most popular excursions departing from Orlando.

Orlando has everything… or almost everything to leave you with a lasting memory of Florida. However, it lacks the sea, which is the big star of this corner of paradise in the United States. Fortunately, Clearwater Beach , one of Florida’s most beautiful beaches , is less than two hours away.

If you decide to get away from the parks and have a nice day at the beach on the fabulous shores of Tampa Bay, you’d better leave very early because there are many things to do besides beach life! 17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. 15. Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

I visit Universal Orlando several times a year. Here are my top 10 tips for first-timers.

I’ll never forget walking out of Universal Islands of Adventure in 2022, drenched from head to toe after riding Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barge . 

It was my first trip back to Universal Orlando Resort in years, and I learned some things the hard way, which I gladly shared with fellow travelers, hoping that they’d avoid my mistakes .

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to visit the Florida resort several times a year. And while I stand by my earlier tips, I’ve learned a few others.

Here are my top tips for first-timers visiting Universal Orlando.

1.  Stay on property

From RV parks to vacation rentals, there’s no shortage of places to stay in Central Florida, but it can pay to stay on property when visiting Universal Orlando. Not only are prices comparable to off-property hotels with Endless Summer Surfside and Dockside starting at $99 a night, but all of Universal’s resort hotels offer 30 minutes of early entry to select parks, which vary depending on time of year. 

They also provide free resort transportation, so you can get back to your room fairly quickly after a long park day or for a midday break. That free transportation can be clutch in the mornings, particularly at pricier Loews Sapphire Falls , Loews Royal Pacific , Loews Portofino Bay , and Hard Rock Hotel , which offer water taxis that drop you off closer to the parks than you can get arriving by car or bus. Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Aventura Hotel guests can walk over to Sapphire Falls for water taxis, but the extra time and steps added may make it not worth skipping the resort shuttle bus.

Walking paths are also available to the parks from every resort hotel except the Endless Summer ones. Cabana Bay guests also have a dedicated walking path to Universal’s Volcano Bay water park.

Guests staying at Royal Pacific, Portofino Bay and Hard Rock also get free Universal Express Passes , which dramatically cut waits for most rides and normally start at $79.99 per person. Free package delivery is also available to all resort hotels, if guests don’t want to lug park purchases around all day.

2. Buy a popcorn bucket

Snacking at the parks can get expensive. Guests are welcome to bring their own snacks, but there’s one crowd-pleaser that won’t break the bank. 

A plain popcorn bucket costs a little over $12, and you can keep getting refills throughout your trip. Refills cost around $2 each, making popcorn among the cheapest, most shareable snacks on property. On our last trip, my family and I got multiple refills for the price of one pretzel with cheese dip.

3.  Bring a light, refillable water bottle

Staying hydrated is always important, particularly on hot park days. 

You can fill water bottles with free ice-cold water at any of the many Coca-Cola Freestyle machines across the property. Cups of ice water are also available for free anywhere dispensed soft drinks are sold.

Leave big double-walled stainless steel tumblers at home. Not only will they feel heavy, carrying them around all the day, but if they aren’t leak-proof, they’ll make a mess when you tip them on their sides to fit in lockers for thrill rides.

4. Bring a medium-sized bag to carry your stuff

Numerous attractions, from Jurassic World VelociCoaster to Men in Black Alien Attack , require guests to store loose articles in lockers provided for the duration of the ride. 

I previously recommended keeping most of your things together to avoid having to empty every pocket each time. That’s still true, but I want to add a caveat on size. 

The free lockers aren’t very big. They can fit a Loungefly-style mini backpack or empty popcorn bucket, if you squish them down, but they’re not large enough for packed full-size backpacks. Keep that in mind unless you want to pay for larger lockers.

5. Bring ponchos

Ponchos don’t take a lot of space and can save you from getting soaked like me on Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barge, Dudley Do-Right’s Rip Saw Falls , and Jurassic Park River Adventure .

Even if you skip water rides, ponchos are good to keep on hand for rainy park days.

6. Use single-rider lines 

Many attractions have a single-rider lane. If you’re traveling alone or don’t mind your party being split up, you can save time using the single-rider lane, if it’s open. They’re not always offered.

It doesn’t guarantee a short wait, but it’s usually shorter. On our latest trip, my middle schooler still waited at least 45 minutes for The Incredible Hulk Coaster and an hour for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit . That was about as long as the regular standby wait for Hulk but shorter than the standby wait for Rip Ride Rockit.

The following attractions have single-rider lanes, though availability varies.

7. Use child swap 

If someone in your party doesn’t meet ride requirements for an attraction or simply wants to sit it out, you can ask for a child swap. It’s particularly helpful for families with young children because it allows parents and caregivers to take turns riding the ride and staying with whoever is sitting it out.

On our most recent trip, my youngest didn’t want to ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure , so we all waited in line together, but then she and I peeled off to a designated waiting room while my middle schooler and mother-in-law went on the ride. When they were done, my mother-in-law stayed with my youngest while I went on the ride. My middle schooler lucked out, getting to ride it twice.

Not all attractions have waiting rooms, but they all offer swaps. Just let team members know you need one.

8. Take breaks

Theme parks can be exhausting. Not only are you on your feet all day, but they can be loud, crowded and overstimulating. 

When possible, I like to plan for at least one sit-down meal in the day. This way, I can take my time and recuperate in air conditioning away from crowds. I’ll typically splurge on one table-service meal, but there are several medium-priced, quick-service restaurants across both theme parks where you can grab a lighter snack and relax.

Really, any cool spot where you can sit down works. Knockturn Alley in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida is always refreshing, though dark. Jurassic Park Discovery Center in Islands of Adventure is a great place for kids to explore while adults unwind. 

9.  Watch the shows

Rides get a lot of the love, but Universal Orlando’s live entertainment is top tier. You can find showtimes on the free resort app or simply stop to watch performances you stumble across while roaming the parks.

The only year-round shows with dedicated seating are at Universal Studios Florida: Animal Actors On Location! , The Bourne Stuntacular , and Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show, which is more funny than scary.

10. Let little ones stretch their legs

There are several play areas across both theme parks for little ones to burn off energy.

This summer, a new DreamWorks Land will open at Universal Studios Florida with a “Kung Fu Panda”-themed play area.

At Islands of Adventure, kids can explore Camp Jurassic in Jurassic Park, If I Ran a Zoo in Seuss Landing, and Me Ship, The Olive in Toon Lagoon. There are also splash pads and water features across Toon Lagoon; just make sure to either bring swimsuits or backup clothes for those.

Bonus: Don’t sleep on Volcano Bay

You’ll definitely want to pack swimsuits if you’re heading to Volcano Bay, which regularly ranks among the best water parks in the country and adds a completely different experience to vacations.

It’s themed like a tropical paradise, with plenty of trees and an iconic volcano that houses multiple water slides. The water park can get crowded, but you never spend too much time standing in line because every guest gets a Tapu Tapu wearable bracelet that lets them join one virtual queue at a time. 

Single-day tickets start at $80, which is considerably less than the $119 starting price for guests age 10 and up at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, but still not cheap. However, if you’re already planning to buy multiday tickets for both theme parks, tacking on Volcano Bay is not much more.

17 Places to Visit in Moscow on a Budget

Looking for honest, low-cost tips on what to do in Moscow? Here is my suggestion on places to visit in Moscow, which I created during my three-month stay in this Russian metropole.

Before we jump to the top places to visit in Moscow let’s talk about the transportation you will need to use. Ideally, you should get a map of Moscow that includes the metro map. If you love to carry a printed version with you, I suggest getting the Lonely Planet Moscow Travel Guide that includes the metro map. If you are fine without it, you should at least download the offline version of Google Maps to make it easier to navigate in Moscow.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the best things to do in Moscow.

1. Visit the Red Square

The Red Square is without a doubt the most iconic place to visit in Moscow. It is located in the heart of Moscow close to the metro station Ploshchad’ Revolyutsii (blue line) , surrounded by the Kremlin and the famous shopping center GUM.

From the Red Square you can also visit further points of interest such as the St. Basil’s Cathedral, Kremlin, the Lenin Mausoleum or the Bolshoi Moskevsky most , which is a great spot to take pictures from.

The Red Square is on top of the list of places to visit Moscow since you can’t skip this when doing some sightseeing in Moscow.

The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful to look at but not as breathtaking from the inside. If you are on a budget it is not a “must-visit” place in Moscow.

2. Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum

Right in the middle of the Red Square, you will notice a strange building which will remind you on a pyramid. This is Lenin’s Mausoleum.

I highly recommend you to not skip this tourist attraction in Moscow. It’s an experience by itself. The area is surrounded by Russian soldiers which monitor every step you make.

Just make sure you are polite and show some respect when visiting Lenin’s Mausoleum.

There are no entry fees and it’s open daily from 10:00 to 13:00h. Be aware however that it is closed on Mondays and Fridays.

3. Try Russian Food at Teremok

The easiest and cheapest way to try local food is to go to the Russian fast food chain Teremok. You can find them everywhere. There is also one located close to Red Square.

It is a great opportunity to grab some food if you plan on taking the free walking tour , that ends right at Alexander’s Garden. Even if you like to explore Moscow on yourself. Alexander’s Garden is a great spot to watch the change of the guards, which might be of interest to you.

When it comes to Russian food I suggest you go for the Blini (Russian pancakes filled with various toppings) and Syrniki (Russian dessert made from cheesecake).

4. Walk Through the City Center

The great things about Moscow city center are that you can walk to many points of interest by foot. Be aware however that the city center is quite big. Bring enough water with you to keep hydrated. Especially during the summer, it can get very hot.

From Alexander’s Garden, you can walk up the street to Bolshoi Theater and Tverskaya street. I personally enjoyed exploring the side streets where there isn’t too much traffic. You will find a lot of coffee places and local shops that will give you a sneak peek into Russian culture.

If you decide to visit the Bolshoi Theater you can view what’s being performed here . The tickets are usually around 3ooo rubles.

5. Walk to the Arbat Street

When exploring Moscow you should not miss the Arbat district with its icon Arbat street .

This one-kilometer long street belongs to the oldest streets in Moscow and is the place where you can spot local artist and musicians.

It is one of my favorite streets as it is for pedestrians only so you will not be bothered by any traffic. The best way to get there is by taking the metro blue line to Arbatskaja or walk from Red Square.

6. Visit “Moscow City” the Highest Towers in Europe

If you want to admire some “modern” architecture, go see the Moscow city. It’s a complex of the highest skyscrapers in Europe. Apart from the skyscrapers, there is however not much to see.

If you have the budget and enjoy a nice view of the city you can visit the rooftop bar called, Sixty Bar which is located on the 60th floor in one of the towers at Moscow City. , The closest metro station to Moscow city is called Vystavochnaya (light blue line).

If you are on a tight time schedule, you can skip this attraction.

7. Visit VDNKH and the Museum of Cosmonautics

A place yo need to visit in Moscow is the VDNKH complex and the Museum of Cosmonautics. It is one of my favorite places to visit in Moscow.

The Museum of Cosmonautics tells the story behind Russian space exploration. You can also learn about the two dogs Belka and Strelka that made it to space. The entrance is only 200 rubles which is a good deal.

VDNKh is an amusement and exhibition park and in winter the home of the largest ice skating rink in Russia. The atmosphere at VDNKh is great.

Both points of interest are close to each other. The closest metro station is called Prospekt Mira.

8. Visit Zarizyno Park

Moscow is full of beautiful parks, one of them is called Tsaritsyno. It’s located approximately one hour south of the city center. If you feel like escaping the noise of busy Moscow this is the place to relax and connect with nature.

You can get to Zarizyno Park with the green line all the way to the Metro Station Tsaritsyno.

Be aware that the visit of the Zarizyno Park will probably take you at least 4 to 5 hours as the park is quite big and it takes a while to get there.

9. Visit Kolomenskoye

Another place to visit in Moscow is the former royal estate complex called Kolomenskoye. This place is a bit off the beaten path and is usually not visited by many tourists. You can connect the visit with the above mentioned Zarizyno Park if you have some days left in Moscow and you need a break from the city center.

The walk around Kolomenskoye gives you a better impression of the Russian culture as it is located in one of Moscow’s suburbs.

10. Visit the Gorki Park the Riverside of Moskva

Closer to the city center, right next to the river Moskva you will find Gorki Park. In summer this spot is the place to go, relax, socialize and enjoy the vibes at the river. In winter it’s a great spot for ice skating.

It is a good place for a date as well :)

11. Watch an Ice Hockey Game

If you happen to be in Moscow around the ice hockey season you need to visit one of the games. A thing to do in Russia is to see a KHL ice hockey game.

The atmosphere is absolutely worth it. The tickets start at 200 rubles and you can buy it in front of the stadium or buy it online. View the schedule of upcoming games here .

12. Visit the Moscow State University MGU

The building of the Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of the seven sisters, a group of seven skyscrapers which look the same. If you ever visit Moscow you will notice that there are few buildings which look alike.

This one is located south of the city close to the metro station Universitet and Vorobyovy Gory. You will need to walk for another 40 minutes from the metro station to get there.

The building is quite impressive, unfortunately, you can’t access it without a valid student ID, but you can enjoy the view over the city from the observation deck in front of it.

I would suggest visiting this place also only if you have more days to spare in Moscow as it’s quite far from other points of interest.

13. Izmaylovo Kremlin and Market

A place that you should however not skip is the Izmaylovo Kremlin.

Did you know that Moscow has more than one Kremlin? This one is located in the east at the metro station Partizanskaja (dark blue line).

I personally prefer this Kremlin over the one on Red Square, which is not worth visiting in my opinion. Izmaylovo Kremlin is however definitely a place to visit in Moscow.

At the Izmaylovo Kremlin, you can find a market where people sell various Russian products. It’s also a great place to buy some souvenirs for a much better price than in the center. Here you can always negotiate if you dare :)

Apart from the market, you need to try another Slavic specialty Shashlik, the best one I have had in Russia was here. The Izmaylovo Kremlin is a must-visit place in Moscow.

You can also walk through the nearby park from where you can have a quite impressive view on the Kremlin.

14. Visit Krutitskoe Podvorye

Krutitskoe Podvorye is another off the beaten path attraction. It’s a historical building, built some 400 years ago although it looks much older.

It’s really impressive and worth the visit if you have time to spare in Moscow. It’s a few minutes walk from the metro station Proletarskaya (purple line).

15. Explore Novodevichy Convent

Similar to the visit of Krutitskoe Podvorye Novodevichy Convent is also a place to visit if you have planned more time for Moscow. It is probably the best-known cloister in Moscow.

It’s interesting to look at and surrounded by a lake which creates a cozy atmosphere. From here you can also get a nice view of the skyline with the Moscow City in the background.

16. Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is by far the most impressive cathedral in Moscow. It’s gigantic and absolutely worth the visit.

You should definitely include it to your list of things to do in Moscow. It’s just a short walk from Kremlin and the entrance is free.

17. Moscow’s Metro Tour

If you have not noticed yet, Moscow is also known for the most beautiful metro stations.

All of them are unique in their own way. My favorite is the Mayakovskaya station (dark green line).

If you happen to be in Moscow on a rainy weekend, driving around and do some sightseeing of Moscow’s metro station can be a fun thing to do. During the week it’s mostly too crowded to be able to even take a picture of the metro station.

Planning a short trip to Moscow?

As you can imagine, to visit all of the above-mentioned places in Moscow is not possible within a few days. If you plan to stay in Moscow just for about three to four days these are the places you need to visit in Moscow.

Places to visit in Moscow in three days:

• Red Square, Alexander’s Garden, Lenin’s Mausoleum, Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour
• Izmaylovo Kremlin and Market, Gorki park, Arbat street
• VDNKH and the Museum of Cosmonautics

Hi Lakshya, 5 days is indeed to short for Moscow. It takes at least two weeks to explore the city (visit the main points of interest). Definitely check out the (day 1) red square, mausoleaum, (day 2) vdnkh, (day 3) Izmaylovo Kremlin, (day 4) Arbatskaya street. While moving through the city you will have the chance to explore the Metro stations as well (better on the weekends when it’s not that busy). Also check out one of their “Anti-cafe” concepts such as the one called Ziferblat :)
