Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) posters by Otto Nielsen
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has a rich history dating back to 1946, when it was founded as a partnership between three Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Today, it is a leading airline with a global network of destinations. Throughout the years, SAS has produced many airline posters to promote its brand and encourage air travel. Let's take a closer look at SAS's posters, with a particular focus on the work of Otto Nielsen.
The Work of Otto Nielsen
One recognizable name in the world of airline posters is Otto Nielsen, a Danish artist who produced many posters for SAS. Nielsen's distinctive style and clever use of animals in his designs have made his posters highly sought after by collectors. He worked for SAS for 47 years, creating around 40 posters that showcased the romance and adventure of air travel. In addition, Nielsen designed 26 annual calendars with varying themes that were highly popular with SAS customers.
Nielsen's SAS Posters
Nielsen's SAS posters from the 1950s and 1960s are some of the most well-known airline posters in the world. They showcase exotic destinations such as New York, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, India, South Africa, as well as the beauty of Scandinavia. Nielsen's use of animals in his designs was a clever way to add personality and whimsy to the posters, while still promoting the allure of air travel. Many of Nielsen's posters have become highly valuable and are sought after by collectors around the world.
At our webshop, we offer a range of vintage SAS posters, including some of Otto Nielsen's most famous designs. If you are looking for a way to connect with the history and legacy of SAS, or simply want to add a piece of aviation history to your collection, be sure to check out our inventory of SAS posters .
The Allure of Airline Posters
Airline posters have been a popular art form since the early days of commercial aviation. These posters were designed to capture the excitement and romance of air travel, showcasing exotic destinations and the luxury of flying. Many people desire these posters as a way to connect with a bygone era or to decorate their homes or offices. As a result, vintage airline posters have become highly collectible and valuable, with some selling for thousands of dollars at auctions.
SAS's Enduring Legacy
SAS has a rich history of innovation and quality service. Its partnership with Otto Nielsen was a key part of the airline's success, as Nielsen's distinctive style helped to define SAS's brand identity. While SAS no longer produces the type of airline posters that made Nielsen famous, the airline continues to inspire travelers with its commitment to quality, service, and innovation.
In conclusion, airline posters are more than just works of art - they are a way to connect with a bygone era and to capture the romance and excitement of air travel. SAS's posters, particularly those created by Otto Nielsen, are some of the most sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Whether you are an art lover, a history buff, or a travel enthusiast, these posters offer a glimpse into the past and a connection to the enduring legacy of SAS.

SAS - Far East - Cranes

SAS Far East Cranes is a c. 1955 Africa travel poster created by Otto Nielsen. The artwork was commissioned by Scandinavian Airline System (S.A.S.), which is known today as Scandinavian Airlines. Nielsen created many beautiful posters for SAS from 1954 to 1976. These posters showcase Nielsen's loose oil painting technique and feature the people and animal life from destinations across the globe. This poster features a pair of Red Crowned Cranes indigenous to China and is part of a series of Asia themed travel posters that focused on the unique animals found on the continent. Otto Nielsen (1916-2000) was an accomplished painter who dedicated much of his career to studying the people and animals of different regions. He illustrated many travel books outside his career at SAS. Nielsen created posters as well as calendars and other promotional material for SAS for nearly 50 years.
