Amateur Miles Russell still ballin’ after making Korn Ferry Tour history

Miles Russell, Veritex Bank Championship

Miles Russell continues to prove himself on the biggest of stages.

The 15-year-old Floridian earned a spot in last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour and took full advantage of the opportunity by finishing in a tie for 15th. That paved the way for another exemption in Texas, where Russell opened the Veritex Bank Championship with a 3-under 68.

The left-hander opened his round with eight straight pars but finally broke through with a birdie at the par-5 9th. A long-range bomb from 30 feet followed at 11, and another birdie at the par-3 12th came minutes after. Suddenly, Russell sat at 3-under and in a solid position through 12 holes.

Russell made another birdie at the drivable, par-4 16th, which measured 329 yards on Thursday. But he made a costly mistake on the final hole, a par-5, as he three-putted from 25 feet for a bogey six.

Still, Russell played beautifully from tee to green, hitting 13-of-14 fairways and 16-of-18 greens. He scrambled nicely, too, going 2-for-2 when he missed the putting surface with his approaches.

But at the end of the day, Russell is 10 strokes behind Frankie Capan III, who shot 58 and broke Scottie Scheffler’s course record in the process.

Still, Russell has a great chance to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour again—one week after becoming the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour since 1983.

He will likely need another round in the 60s to make the cut again, but knowing how much talent this 15-year-old has, that is most certainly within the realm of possibilities.

What to know about the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, the last at Victoria National

NEWBURGH, Ind. — This week will mark the final professional golf tournament at Victoria National for the foreseeable future.

The 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance returns to the Evansville area from Thursday to Sunday. It is the 12th year Victoria National has hosted an event on what is now the Korn Ferry Tour. Following a change in 2019, it is also the final stop on the tour's schedule.

In addition to it being the final year at Victoria, the tournament also has a new format. Here is what you need to know for this week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship.

Korn Ferry Tour: Championship will leave Victoria National Golf Club in 2024

Why is it the final tournament at Victoria National?

It was announced in February the tournament would relocate to Pete Dye Course in French Lick starting next year.

There has been a professional golf tournament at Victoria National since 2012. The first seven years were played in the spring or summer under the names United Leasing Championship (2012-15) and United Leasing & Finance Championship (2015-18). The Korn Ferry Tour moved its season-ending tournament to Victoria National the following year.

Dormie Network, the owner of Victoria National in Newburgh, exercised its ability to leave a 10-year contract in its fifth year. The event is locked in at French Lick through at least 2028. Dates won't be set until after this season.

"It just didn’t fit their model," United Leasing & Finance Executive Chairman Ron Romain said in February of Dormie Network's decision. "French Lick was on our radar from the get-go because we knew the caliber of golf course they had. It's important to me that we have some major sporting event (in Southwest Indiana)."

What is the tournament schedule?

The Korn Ferry Tour Championship is Thursday-Sunday. Tee times are scheduled for 7:30-9:45 a.m., split tees in groups of three, with tournament play over at approximately 3 p.m. each day.

The Pro-Ams were on Monday and Tuesday. The Tri-State Varsity Shootout involving area high school golfers was conducted Monday.

How can I watch or purchase tickets?

General admission tickets are available each day for $20 online or at the tournament . Hospitality passes are available through the Korn Ferry Tour Championship website. Children under age 17 are not required to have a ticket for general admission per the website but are required to have a ticket to enter a hospitality area.

Parking will be available at Friedman Park for a $5 donation. No passes or credentials are required.

The first round will have television coverage starting at 1 p.m. CDT via Golf Channel and Peacock. The second and third rounds start at 11 a.m. The final round has coverage on Peacock starting at 11 a.m. and Golf Channel at noon.

What is at stake?

Unlike previous seasons, the championship doesn't have a separate points list. The top 30 through the entire season will earn PGA Tour cards. A handful of spots were already clinched through the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio, two weeks ago.

The No. 1 player on the season-ending points list earns fully exempt PGA Tour status for the 2024 season and qualifies for the 2024 U.S. Open and The Players Championship. Ben Kohles is currently the top points leader at 1,795. Those ranked from No. 2-30 begin the season in a Korn Ferry Tour graduates category.

Those from 31-60 on the final list earn direct access to the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School. The remainder begin Q-School at the Second Stage unless otherwise exempt via an alternate category. All players who qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship are fully exempt for the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour.

Players to Watch

The field will feature 73 players, as Grayson Murray and Nicholas Lindheim will not compete.

The top six on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List are scheduled to play: Kohles, Chan Kim, Rico Hoey, Ben Silverman, Alejandro Tosti and Pierceson Coody. The latter two are the highest-ranked players on the Official World Golf Rankings with Tosti at 100 and Coody at 106.

Those around the coveted top 30 mark include Chase Seiffert (28), Shad Tuten (29), Jackson Suber (30), Roger Sloan (31) and Wilson Fuff (32).

Who is the new 'kid' on the Korn Ferry Tour? We found out

A RLINGTON, Texas – Miles Russell, the 15-year-old golf whiz kid, made headlines on the Korn Ferry Tour last week - the youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut and record a top-20 finish - but when he arrived at the Veritex Bank Championship Korn Ferry event this week, he was undone by the twin challenges of securing a rental car and locking up a housing arrangement.

"It's good he needs me for that; they certainly don't need me for golf," joked his dad, Joe Russell, a Florida senior living developer, who is here this week along with caddie and longtime instructor Ramon Bescansa.

Of course, dad picked up the check for a Tuesday night dinner at a local Pappadeaux, but other than that, he was resigned to applying sunshine on the range while his son and Bescansa honed their craft next to other players, some more than twice the teen’s age.

Miles Russell, a high school freshman, finished T20 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, and the top-25 finish qualified him for this week, his second Korn Ferry Tour event. He tees off at 2:43 p.m. local. A surprise? Maybe. But Russell’s list of accomplishments are longer than his slightly built 5-foot-7 frame.

The AJGA’s top-ranked junior, he broke Tiger Woods’ record as the youngest player ever to win AJGA Player of the Year and was the youngest ever to win the Junior Players Championship. He captured the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots, played in the Junior Ryder Cup and was named to the first USGA Junior National team. And don’t forget his 17 Florida Junior Golf Tournament wins and upcoming PGA Tour exemption for the fall Bermuda tournament.

Although there’s still room for improvement - at least in some areas.

"I got to get better (with autographs),” he said. “I've got to get a lot faster.”

With his bulky TaylorMade staff bag (with his name on it) an NIL deal and promising future, he seems like the typical modern junior golfer, although he’s old school in the fact that he refuses to wear ear buds when he warms up.

"I prefer to hear the sound of the ball coming off the club," he said.

Both his PGA Tournament mentor, Steve Wheatcroft, who was a member at Russell's home course, Atlantic Beach Country Club, and Bescansa, have emphasized that no matter how bright his future is, there will be struggles along the way. Wheatcroft also taught him something that could come in handy down the road - the art of trash talk and money games.

"Weathie!" Russell said, when thinking about their sessions together. "He took some money from me and then it turned around and I took some from him."

Added Atlantic Beach head golf pro Richard Podwalski: "Steve would dog him and trash him and make him tougher. That was his job and he did it well."

Around Atlantic Beach, Russell's already made a name for himself.

There was the albatross on the par-5 6th hole last summer, where he holed a 5-wood from 239 yards, only the second in recent club history. ("He was too young to buy drinks after that, so we gave him a piece of framed artwork," Podwalski said.) He's already shot 29 multiple times on the front nine of the par-72 course; his low is 62, and Podwalski says 59 isn’t unrealistic. And of course, they're still talking about his shot during the annual Black Friday shootout last November.

Russell put his tee ball on the 9th directly behind a tree in the right rough, just six inches from the tree roots. No matter. He opened a 3-iron, sent the ball skyward around the tree, curved it and landed it right next to the green. The gallery was stunned; Tour players Doc Redman and Vince Covello shook their heads in amazement.

"I've been playing tournament golf for 30 years,” Covello said, “and that's the greatest shot I've ever seen.”

It’s not uncommon to see Russell practicing alone in a bunker for hours or chipping off the cart path. Joe Russell quit playing against his son long ago, but his final match was a memorable one.

"It was the year Tiger and Phil played in The Match on TV, and we decided to have our own match as well," he said. "He went back to the back tees (at age 11) and he beat me by 10 shots. I said that's it, I'm done."

Russell has even learned how to turn a rare disappointment into a positive. In 2016, he shot a six-under 30 in a U.S. Kids regional event, only to lose by a single shot to good friend Graden Lomax, who shot 29. But instead of getting bitter and losing a friendship, he got better, forming the Florida Sunshine Cup with Lomax, where elite junior players come together for a day of fundraising for local charities, including the Nicklaus Family Children’s Hospital, which has raised $300,00 in the last five years.

"It started as a dream, but it has turned out great," Joe Russell said.

A lot like his first Korn Ferry Tour start.

Trainer and Brehm can find a few perks amid New Orleans disappointment

Martin Trainer reacts after missing his putt on the 18th...

Martin Trainer reacts after missing his putt on the 18th green during a playoff for the PGA Zurich Classic golf tournament at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., Sunday, April 28, 2024. The disappointment on Martin Trainer’s face was obvious when he pushed a 6-foot par putt that would extended the playoff in the Zurich Classic. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy wound up winning over Trainer and Chad Ramey.

But it wasn’t the worst consolation prize for Trainer.

His portion of the runner-up finish was $525,100, the second-largest payoff of his PGA Tour career behind the $540,000 he earned from winning the 2019 Puerto Rico Open. It also was more than he made in all of the 2020, 2021 and 2023 seasons.

“There’s a lot of really good things to take from this week, and that’s what I’m going to do,” Trainer said. “Solo second finish in the end is still pretty good.”

Solo third also isn’t awful as Ryan Brehm can attest. The big hitter from Michigan was right in the mix with Mark Hubbard, narrowly missing out on a playoff when Brehm’s birdie putt from the fringe grazed the cup.

Third place was worth $343,763 for Brehm, in the final year of his full exemption from winning the 2022 Puerto Rico Open. That was his second-largest paycheck behind the $660,000 he earned from his only win.

Trainer also moved up from No. 171 to No. 103 in the FedEx Cup, while Brehm went from No. 162 to No. 114. Both are in the field for The CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Trainer is at No. 4 in the “Swing Five” list that get into the $20 million Wells Fargo Championship next week.

GOING LOW ON THE KORN FERRY

Frankie Capan III opened with a 58 in the Veritex Bank Championship to further highlight a trend in low scoring on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Scores have been coming down across golf over the last decade, a natural progression. What makes the Korn Ferry Tour stand out is that Capan was the third player this year with a sub-60 round, following Aldrich Potgieter (59) and Cristobal Del Solar (57) in Colombia.

This is the second straight year for the Korn Ferry Tour to produce three sub-60 rounds. Mac Meissner (Lecom Suncoast Classic), Michael Feagles (BMW Charity Pro-Am) and David Kocher (Albertsons Boise Open) each shot 59 a year ago.

No other tour around the world has produced more than two sub-60 rounds in the same year.

Equally remarkable about the Korn Ferry Tour is none of those six players who shot in the 50s in 2023 and 2024 went on to win. There have been 13 sub-60 rounds in Korn Ferry Tour history, and only two players went on to win — Stephan Jaeger in the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic and Jason Gore in the 2005 Cox Classic.

Golf has seen two other sub-60 rounds this year — Joaquin Niemann at LIV Golf Mayakoba and John Catlin at the International Series Macau on the Asian Tour. Both wound up winning.

BRADLEY ON LIV

Keegan Bradley doesn’t know where golf is headed and how it can be healed. “I hear a different new rumor every day,” he says.

But part of him wouldn’t mind seeing a few PGA Tour events with LIV Golf involved.

“I think it would be really fun to have a tournament like the Travelers, where you’re coming down the stretch against a PGA Tour versus a LIV guy,” Bradley said Monday at media day for the Travelers Championship, where he will defend his title in June.

“I think that would be fun for the media. I think it would be fun for the public. I think it could be fun to watch.”

LIV players can play in European tour events as long as they pay fines for being on the Saudi-circuit without having a release. But they are suspended by the PGA Tour, and showing up at a non-major still seems far away.

Bradley said several players who left for LIV were “big characters, good and bad, and great players.”

“And I think eventually you’d see them come back,” he said. “But the LIV guys are going to have to play on LIV. It would just be an event here or there. I don’t think any of them are going to jump over and play full time.”

LEGENDARY LANGER

Bernhard Langer already has defied age by winning every season on the PGA Tour Champions since he became eligible for the 50-and-older circuit in 2007. That includes breaking Hale Irwin's career victory record with his 46 senior title.

Equally remarkable is the 66-year-old German returns to competition this week in the Insperity Invitational outside Houston just three months after tearing his left Achilles tendon.

Langer tore the tendon Feb. 1 when leaping for a lob while playing pickleball. To no one's surprise, he followed the doctor's order by the book. He also was inspired by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers going through the same injury in September and throwing a football in December, even though he didn't return.

"That lifted my spirits, hearing he was back on the field throwing the ball after eight or nine weeks,” Langer said. “That encouraged me that I may do something similar.”

What's next? He has gone 17 consecutive seasons with a PGA Tour Champions title and sees no reason why he can't extend the streak. This week might be asking too much, though he is a four-time winner of the Insperity Invitational.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Brendan Steele won $4 million for his victory in LIV Golf Adelaide. He won a combined $3,312,000 for his three PGA Tour victories.

“I asked ... if we could play a fourth round this week just because I wanted to experience what we have experienced all week for another day.” — Lucas Herbert on playing LIV Golf Adelaide before a home crowd in Australia.

Kris Kim, 16, becomes youngest golfer to make PGA Tour cut in 11 years

  • Kim makes crucial birdie at last in CJ Cup Byron Nelson

English teenager Kris Kim became the youngest player to make the cut on the PGA Tour in 11 years after a birdie at the last saw him get through to the weekend of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas with a shot to spare.

Amateur Kim, the son of former LPGA player Ji-Hyun Suh, made a second-round four-under-par 67, which included a run of five birdies and one bogey over his front nine.

At 16 years and seven months he became the youngest player to make the cut on tour since 14-year-old Guan Tianlang at the 2013 Masters, and, according to the PGA Tour, the fifth youngest in history.

after newsletter promotion

“I’m happy. I can’t wait to get started again tomorrow,” said Kim, a junior member at Walton Heath in Surrey, whose seven-under total left him tied for 36th. “I’ve enjoyed it so much the last couple days and being here two more days makes it so much sweeter.”

Of his final-hole birdie, he said: “To be honest it being a par five it’s pretty helpful but yeah, there is always going to be nerves when you’re on the cut line.”

Kim’s compatriot Matt Wallace lost his overnight lead despite a second-round 66 – the highlight being an eagle after driving the 324-yard par-four 14th – moving him to 13 under.

Former nightclub bouncer Jake Knapp assumed top spot a stroke ahead after eight birdies in a round of 64. Texas native Jordan Spieth, the highest-ranked player in the field as world No 20, missed his fourth cut in six tournaments after a one-over 70 left him at four under.
