Versailles Full-Day Bike Tour with Picnic

Having inspired countless royal residences around the world, the château of Versailles is the original symbol of royal power and wealth. Built as the palace for the French monarchy in the 1600’s, we can still visit the King’s home and personal backyard that’s larger than life. We’ll have a chance to see the palace, the grounds, and the formal gardens all in a day!

Versailles is located just 16 kilometers/12 miles from Paris, so we’ll meet near a metro station within Paris before beginning our journey. From there, we’ll take the suburban rail together (about 30 minutes) and then pick up our bikes just across from the train station. Our first stop will be the famous city market where we’ll shop for our picnic supplies (cost not included) to enjoy a lunch fit for a King (or Queen!) once on the grounds. Then, we’ll cruise through the Château’s enormous park along a network of fantastic trails and tree-lined paths, pausing along the way to share the rich history of the palace and French monarchy. Next, it’s on to our picnic at the end of the Grand Canal where we’ll settle down for a royal feast.

After lunch, we’ll continue through the grounds to visit Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet and the area known as the Trianons, which were pleasure palaces for the royal family. The Grand & Petit Trianon were home to visiting heads of state during their stay in Versailles, mistresses, extended royal family members, and day apartments for the Queen. After visiting these lesser-known but magnificent satellite palaces and Marie Antoinette’s controversial peasant village, we’ll make our way back to the front of the palace, drop off our bikes, and enjoy our timed entry into the château. Please note that certain parts of the tour include walking.

Once inside the palace, you will be able to see the room where Marie Antoinette’s guards were killed as they protected her from the mob at the beginning of the Revolution. You can walk through the breathtaking Hall of Mirrors where King Louis greeted guests, and centuries later the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end World War I. When you ride with us, you will explore exponentially more of the 2,000+ acres of royal property than you would ever be able to see on your own.

This tour is perfect for intermediate bike riders. You should have good balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. Most of this tour is on roads and although we stick together as a group and carve out a lane for ourselves, we ask that all guests feel confident with their riding ability. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety.

If you’re not sure how you’ll fare, we invite you to try out some of our other tours first.

What is the difference between the Versailles Bike Tour and the Small Group VIP Versailles Bike Tour?

There are two main differences between the Small Group VIP Versailles tour and our standard Versailles tour.  Firstly, our Small Group VIP tour guarantees no more than 12 guests per tour guide, giving you a more personal experience throughout the day.  The other main difference is that the VIP option includes an extra hour-long private guided tour of the King’s apartments which are closed to the general public. You will get to see these 12 different rooms, which include the King Louis XIV’s office and bed chamber. It is an amazing way to experience the beauty of the chateau without having to fight the crowds.

Our VIP tour also dedicates time to visit the fountain show in the formal gardens. Both tours include transportation to and from Paris, timed entry ino the public areas of the chateau, a guided bike tour of the grounds, and a picnic lunch (cost of food not included).

Versailles, far more than just a Palace!

Our Versailles Bike Tour with reserved entry into the Palace is the perfect way to discover the grandeur of the 2,000 acre Royal Domain of Versailles!

You'll start your tour by exploring the local farmers market and picking up some supplies for your picnic lunch along the lake. Then spend the day discovering the royal grounds, the inside of Marie Antoinette’s private domain, the Grand & Petit Trianon chateaux, culminating in your reserved entry into the beautiful Palace of Versailles with its famous Hall of Mirrors.

Cycle with us and learn about the Sun King’s life and legacies, the scandals of Louis 15th and his 50 mistresses, and Queen Marie-Antoinette during the French Revolution. Your guide will share the French Royalty’s history with you in a fun and interactive way and you’ll go home loving Versailles.

FYI : Blue Fox Travel does not make you carry your Blue Bike™ onto the train, the bikes for this tour are stored just across the street from the Palace, in Versailles.

Picnic By The Lake.

A perfect day in Versailles.

On our Versailles Bike Tour we’ve planned out everything to be fun, easy, and well organized. We’ve focused on all the little details and created an incomparably awesome, stress free, day of exploration in Versailles.

Start the day by meeting up with your guide in central Paris at the train station named Gare Saint-Lazare (exact details in booking confirmation). We’ll provide the train tickets for you and together you’ll take the train to the town of Versailles. The train ride takes about 35 minutes and then you’ll arrive right next to the Farmers Market. Please note than your Blue Bike™ is waiting for you in our Versailles bike hub, you do not have to carry your bike into the train.

Versailles Farmers Market and picnic by the lake.

Your first stop in Versailles will be the wonderful Farmers Market. There you’ll be free to roam the brimming food stalls and pick up your own lunch supplies for the picnic that’s planned for later in the day. Once you have finished shopping you’ll be fitted to a Blue Bike™ and given some bike panniers (baskets) so you can carry all of your picnic supplies.

Your guide will then lead you into the 2,000 acre Royal Domain of Versailles and show you all of the most picturesque and historically interesting parts of it. You’ll cycle at a medium speed and cover about 11K or 7 miles on mostly flat ground. During this time you’ll stop every 15 minutes or so to hear fun bits of history and learn about the life and legend of our famous Sun King, Louis the 14th, and our infamous Queen, Marie-Antoinette. You’ll also stop for a picnic lunch by the beautiful lake with a view over the Palace.

Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet

Louis the XIVth and Marie-Antoinette

Following the picnic you’ll get to experience some of the unique hideaways which the royalty enjoyed when you visit their private homes known as the Petit and Grand Trianons. You’ll learn about and enjoy free time inside of King Louis’ Grand Trianon, his marble summer home with exquisite French Gardens. Then you’ll cycle next door to learn about and explore inside of the very private Petit Trianon, which was built exclusively for the king’s favorite mistress Madame de Pompadour.

Afterwards you’ll have the free time to walk along the little dirt paths from the Petit Trianon to Marie-Antoinette’s Private Domaine. You’ll wander through the adorable English style garden and admire the small farmers village which Marie Antoinette had built for herself. It is unlike any other part of Versailles and gives us a deep and wonderful glimpse into the folly and longing of Marie-Antoinette’s heart. The time spent in the Private Domain of Marie-Antoinette, is completely on foot, as bikes are not allowed, and usually lasts 45 minutes.

Palace and Hall of Mirrors

By this time you will have learned about and experienced so much of the history of Versailles that the only thing left to do is explore inside the main Palace of Versailles itself, so that’s what you’ll do. You’ll say goodbye to your Blue Bike™ and your guide will escort you right to the entrance of the Palace itself where you will say goodbye to them. Inside of the Palace you'll be free to explore at your own pace and focus on the rooms that interest you the most for as little or as long as you like.

The Hall of Mirrors

Good to Know:

  • From April to October the French garden which is attached to the Palace closes at 8:30PM, so you will have plenty of time to visit it after your time inside the Palace.

For Kids and Paris Museum Passes : tickets can be purchased directly on site if desired. BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered SARL (Société à Responsabilité Limitée - Limited Liability Company) at the Paris Chamber of Commerce under the number : 534 151 576 BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered French Travel Operator under the licence : IM075160040 BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered Public Service Vehicle Operator under the Licence : 2016/11/0007784 Because BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered French company, and all of our tours take place in France, only the French Law will apply in the case of any conflict. Last updated : January 2019. Valid until : the end of the world.

I - Cancellation Policy

BFT offers a 100% refund if a reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tour. The notification must be made by email. No refunds are given for ANY reason once within the 24 hrs prior to the scheduled tour. All of our tours run Rain or Shine. We do not issue refunds if you choose to skip your tour because the weather doesn’t suit you. You can always wait until the last minute to book your tour to ensure the weather suits you that day. BFT reserves the right to cancel any of its tours last minute in case of an Act of God or crazy act from a large group of people. Flooding, hail, dangerous weather conditions, riots, etc. In such instances full refunds will be given to anyone who had their tour cancelled.

II - Satisfaction Guarantee Policy

If the tour you took with us didn’t live up to what we promised you on our website and failed to meet your expectations, we will be heartbroken. We will also give you a 100% refund so long as you do all of these things: You remember that we we are in no way responsible for the weather and that our guides actually have to give 110% of themselves to you on days when the weather is not as nice in order to help you enjoy the tour. You participate in the entire tour from: being on time at the meeting point until the “goodbyes” at the very end of the tour. You can’t leave a tour half-way and ask for your money back. At the end of the tour you tell your guide, in person, that you were not satisfied with the tour you took. You provide your tour guide with the reasons you were not satisfied with the tour itself.

III - Payment Policy

A valid credit card is required to secure your booking. All reservations must be prepaid online prior to the tour. We accept Visa, Mastercard. None of your personal credit card or billing information is stored by BFT.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

The ultimate bike tour of unforgettable Versailles

If you’ve come to Paris to discover vivacious Versailles, this is your ultimate bike tour, taking you to the Palace, Gardens, Fountains, Royal Grounds, Open Air Food Market (for an extra special Parisian picnic), and even Marie Antoinette’s private hamlet. This guided day tour is your all-encompassing Versailles via velo adventure!

There are simply no words in existence to do full justice to the breathtaking beauty of Château de Versailles. The Palace has stood since 1634 as the ultimate architectural masterpiece, representing the highest imaginable degree of beauty, and perhaps the most extravagant status symbol in the history of world politics. It was built to be the official royal residence of King Louis XIV of France. Inherent in the design are the two key principles that guided the king - power and beauty.

You will receive a guided tour of the interior of the Palace, where magnificence knows no bounds. Explore the Hall of Mirrors, King’s Apartment, and Royal Chapel amongst other exquisite locations of interest. Outside, ride around the Royal Inner Gardens and the world-famous fountains for a mesmerizing tour of triumphant topiary, decorative lawns, and sensational statues.

You’ll park your bicycle up at the Versailles Open Air Food Market to purchase authentic French delicacies for the most picturesque of picnics. You’d have to ride a long way to have lunch on a lawn with a more regal view!

Your guided bike tour sees you ride around the Royal Grounds, from the Estate of Trianon, to the stables, to the Park and Gardens. You’ll finish with a regal flourish at Marie Antoinette’s private hamlet, a lakeside crescent of captivating cottages ordered by the Queen herself - her own slice of paradise in the grounds of the most prominent palace in the world.

The ride of a lifetime.

Your Experience

Because Versailles is only 16 kilometers (12 miles) from Paris, your meeting point will be near a metro station in the city before embarking on the Versailles bike tour. You’ll then ride the suburban rail together for around 30 minutes before picking up your bikes right across the street from the train station.

Your first visit will be at the famous city market, where you’ll stock up on picnic goods (not included) in preparation for a lunch fit for a King (or Queen!) once you’ve arrived on the grounds. Then, via a network of beautiful trails and tree-lined paths, you’ll cruise through Château’s immense park, halting along the way to explore the palace’s and the French monarchy’s rich history. Then it’s off to our picnic at the Grand Canal’s end, where we’ll have a royal feast.

Versailles Bike Guide

You’ll continue through the grounds after lunch to see Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet and the area known as the Trianons, which were royal family pleasure homes. During their tenure in Versailles, visiting heads of state, mistresses, extended royal family members, and day apartments for the Queen were housed in the Grand & Petit Trianon. You’ll return to the front of the palace, put down your bikes, and enjoy your skip-the-line entry into the Château after touring these lesser-known but spectacular satellite palaces and Marie Antoinette’s contentious peasant town.

Once inside the palace, you may see the room where Marie Antoinette’s guards were assassinated while protecting her from the rabble at the start of the Revolution. You can walk inside the magnificent Hall of Mirrors, where King Louis greeted visitors and where the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, was signed decades later.

Versailles Segway Tour

The Versailles segway tour takes you through the magnificent Versailles Park on a 1-hour or 2-hour narrated tour on segway, making it a fun and easy way to see the city. Ride along the Grand Canal, past the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and Queen’s Hamlet, pausing for a breathtaking view of Versailles’ magnificent Palace. It’s a fun and easy way to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Versailles Park (Parc du Château de Versailles) while listening to your guide’s educational commentary. This small-group Segway trip has a maximum of 12 participants, ensuring a more customized experience.

Duration of the tour

Note: Mobile tickets are accepted.

Policy regarding cancellations

Cancel at least 24 hours before the adventure begins to receive a full refund.

English and French are the languages that are available.

What can you expect on the Versailles Segway Tour?

An orientation session led by your guide will help you get acquainted with your Segway. These self-balancing personal transportation systems let you cover more ground quickly and comfortably while also being enjoyable to ride.

Take a ride around Versailles Park to start your Versailles segway tour.. Glide around the Grand Canal of this UNESCO-listed landmark while listening to your guide’s fascinating commentary. Visit the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon, respectively, the private retreats of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, as well as the Queen’s Hamlet and the King’s Stables. As you ride along, your guide will point you to more noteworthy structures.

Stop for views of the Versailles Home, where you may take photos while listening to your guide discuss Louis XIV’s aspirations of grandeur, which drove him to build and enhance this lavish palace.

All Aboard!

Your day begins at the Javel Train Station in Paris. Enjoy a comfortable, quick train journey of about 35 minutes alongside your guide and fellow travelers, before arriving at Versailles Rive Gauche Train Station. Now, your adventure can begin!

Retrieve Your Bicycles

Now that you’ve arrived, you will follow your guide to the Chateau grounds to pick up your bikes at the Versailles Gardens. This is a great time to stop at the adjacent cafe for water or drinks, as there won’t be many opportunities to do so during the tour.

Once you and your group members are situated with your bikes and helmets, it’s time for the adventure to begin!

Versailles’s Outdoor Market

Your first stop of the day is Versailles’s bustling, open-air market. Park your bike and begin perusing the numerous stalls selling fresh baguettes, cheese, fruits, and more delicious French delicacies. Not only is the market a feast for the senses, it’s also amazing people-watching and a wonderful look at local life in Versailles. Plus, it's the perfect time for everyone in the group to grab something yummy for later. We've got an awesome lunch stop planned.

Lunch isn’t included in the price of the tour, so be sure to bring cash for any additional purchases.

The Grand Canal

After exploring the market, hop back on your bike and follow your guide to the Grand Canal for an amazing photo opportunity! Shaped like a large cross and designed by André Le Notre, Louis XIV’s gardener, the Grand Canal is an iconic attraction in Versailles. Take in the breathtaking view as your guide explains the fascinating history of the canal and its significance to Versailles.

Lunch with a View

Before moving on to the next stop on the tour, enjoy a traditional Parisian picnic lunch from the top of the Grand Canal. Admire the view as you devour French treats while chatting with your newfound group of friends.

Grand Trianon

Now that you’ve refueled with a delicious lunch, it’s time to hop back on your bike and continue exploring! Follow your guide to the awe-inspiring Grand Trianon, a French Baroque-style chateau found tucked away in the gardens.

Louis XIV requested that the chateau be built as a place for him to retreat with his mistress at the time. The architecture of the building is truly impressive, and after parking your bike, you’ll have thirty minutes of free time to explore the breathtaking site at your leisure.

After meeting your friendly guide back at the bike parking area, you’ll cruise over to your next stop, the Queen’s Hamlet. This rustic retreat was built for Marie Antoinette in 1783, as a place for the queen to relax and entertain her closest friends.

Drop off your bike and follow along as your guide leads a tour through the most prominent landmarks within the Hamlet. Marvel at the Temple of Love, a beautiful marble temple surrounded by greenery, the House of the Queen, the charming Moulin, and the idyllic farm that was actually in use when Marie Antoinette lived there.

If time allows, your guide will also take you to the Petit Trianon, a Neoclassical chateau that served as a place of refuge for Marie Antoinette.

The Chateau

You have one more stop on your royal adventure through Versailles! After riding back from the Hamlet, drop off your bicycles and enter the Chateau, the absolute jewel of Versailles. Explore the magnificent royal palace on your own and learn intriguing stories of those who once lived in this former royal residence.

You will have plenty of free time to explore the opulent palace and extraordinary gardens of Versailles at your leisure. You can take any train back, so no rush to depart the palace grounds.

Versailles bike tour

We lucked out with a nice sunny day for our tour- rain would have made it not as enjoyable since we were outside for a lot of the time. We met our tour guide, Julien, at the meeting spot and from there everything was smooth. We really enjoyed seeing the beautiful market in the town of Versailles and appreciated the recommendations from Julien on what to get. We might not have gone there otherwise if we were on our own so I was very pleased to get to also experience that with the tour. He was very knowledgeable and informative on French history, which makes touring Versailles that much better if you’re not versed in it already. He was with us biking and through the gardens, but we toured inside the buildings on our own, finishing in the main palace at our own pace. It was a nice day and I’m happy we went with the bike tour. Bring comfortable clothes to bike and walk, and we also had a backpack to put our food in that I’m glad we brought since we had leftovers. Thank you Julien!

This was the way to do Versailles!

We had been told that Versailles is worth a full day and that the gardens are bigger than can be imagined. They were right! The tour was perfect for us after several days of city site-seeing. Benjamin met us promptly, was delightful and informative. We walked through the main garden to get to a cafe where we had coffee while our bikes were arranged. The bikes was fine and had good baskets. We rode through a portion of the garden and Trianon section to get into the charming city of Versailles, went through the farmers market getting sandwiches and fruit for a picnic lunch. Then over to ride through around the Grand Canal, picnic lunch, explored more gardens (Mon Dieu, there are amazing sculptures and water fountains everywhere), then to the Grand and Petit Trianon— amazing in different ways. Then returned the bikes and walked back up to do a self-guided tour of the inside of the Louvre. Spectacular as well. Benjamin lived in the US though he is a native Parisian so his English is beyond excellent. Wonderful trip. One of my colleagues was there at the same time and had only allotted 2 1/2 hours for the gardens and palace, totally regretted not having allotted more time and was OMG about riding bikes (because it really is that huge).

After visiting these lesser-known but magnificent satellite palaces and Marie Antoinette’s controversial peasant village, we’ll make our way back to the front of the palace, drop off our bikes, and enjoy our skip-the-line entry into the château.

It is an amazing way to experience the beauty of the chateau without having to fight the crowds.
