Experience More of Patagonia, More Personally, with Nat Hab!

  • A More Personalized Nature Experience We limit our group to approximately 12 travelers—and just 10 on photography departures. You'll enjoy quieter encounters with the natural world and plenty of personal attention from our Expedition Leader.
  • Varied Angles to View and Photograph Patagonia's Famous Glaciers The Southern Patagonian ice fields are some of the largest on Earth, and glacier sightseeing is a highlight. In Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we do some light hiking near Perito Moreno, which unlike most glaciers is still advancing. We also view it from the water on a private boat trip on Lago Argentino, and watching icebergs calve from its 200-foot-high face is a matchless thrill. View Upsala Glacier from Estancia Cristina, too, an equally impressive sight.
  • Search for Wild Pumas—Sightings are on the Rise! While pumas—also known as cougars or mountain lions in North America—are elusive and rarely seen, sightings are increasing, and we put a special focus on looking for them. In fact, we've added a third day in the Torres del Paine National Park region for this very purpose. This is likely not the case on other Patagonia trips, which aren't as wildlife-oriented as ours is.
  • Unique Lodgings Include Coveted Patagonia Camp Nat Hab accommodations are often as memorable as the destinations we explore. Among the special places we stay is Patagonia Camp, with access to Chile's renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Warm, wind-resistant luxury yurts provide an immersion in the natural environs while offering supreme comfort. We also stay on two private conservation-focused ranches—Estancia Cristina and Estancia Cerro Guido—for an exclusive look at how sustainable agriculture works hand in hand with wildlife protection.
  • Your Expedition Leader is One of Patagonia’s Top Naturalist Guides Our Patagonia Expedition Leader is one of the most acclaimed guides in the region, with years of in-depth experience in the southern Andes. All our Expedition Leaders benefit from further resources provided by WWF scientists, so your trip is sure to be an adventure for the mind as well as the body and spirit. On our special photo departures, you'll travel with a professional photographer guide who has years of expertise in the wild reaches of the southern Andes. Read our Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Superlative Patagonia Adventure Natural Habitat Adventures offers an exclusive guarantee that clearly states that we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise for yourself!
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. When to visit patagonia.

Unlike many destinations, there is no “bad” or “wrong” time to visit Southern Patagonia. Discover the region's stunning landscapes any time of year with our expertly-made itineraries. Each season in Patagonia offers its own special magic.

Whether you're captivated by the vibrant colors of spring, the endless daylight of summer, the fiery foliage of autumn, or the pristine snowscapes of winter, there's an experience waiting for you.

Patagonia in January

January is one of the 3 summer months in Patagonia where the days are the longest all year and the temperatures are the warmest of the year (although its never warm in Patagonia). Temperatures are pleasant during the day, with cooler temperatures at night. You can expect the sun to be up as early as 4:30am and sundown to be at around 10:00pm. This is also the busiest time of the year in Patagonia.

  • Average Air Temperature: 67ºF (19ºC)

Patagonia in February

February is one of the 3 summer months in Patagonia along with December and January. It is the busiest time of the year in the Parks and temperatures are also the warmest of the year (although it’s never warm in in this corner of the world). The sun also rises very early during this time of year, at around 5:00am and sundown can be as late as 10:00pm.

Patagonia in March

March is the first month of the fall in Patagonia and rewards travelers with beautiful colors as leaves begin to change color for the upcoming winter season. For photographers, this is one of the nicest times of the years to go as the landscape contrasts beautifully with the shades of reds, yellows and browns of the plant life. The winds of the earlier months start to die down and the larger crowds of the summer months also begin to diminish during this time of the year.

  • Average Air Temperature: 63ºF (17ºC)

Patagonia in April

During the month of April the colors of the trees around the Park start to get more dramatic as they prepare for the winter. For photographers, along with the months of April and May this is one of the nicest times of the years to go as the landscape contrasts beautifully with the shades of reds, yellows and browns of the plant life. There is a lot less wind during this time of year as compared to the summer months and crowds also begin to diminish.

  • Patagonia Wild Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 56ºF (13ºC)

Patagonia in May

During the month of May the foliage colors around the park are very intense, making it a perfect time of year for photographers. There is also a lot less wind during this time of year as compared to the previous months, allowing for those beautiful photographs of the mountains reflecting on the perfectly still lakes around the Park. Puma sightings also become a lot more common during this month of the year as these big cats get ready for their favorite season of the year… winter.

  • Patagonia Untamed Puma Safari
  • Patagonia Hidden Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 48ºF (9ºC)

Patagonia in June

June is the first month of the winter season in Patagonia; the season with the least amount of wind all year. It’s very common to have lots of days of big blue skies, and because there is no wind it can often feel warmer than Fall or even Summer months. For photographers, this is the most beautiful time of the year to visit Patagonia and it is much easier to spot elusive wildlife like Pumas and foxes.

  • Average Air Temperature: 39ºF (4ºC)

Patagonia in July

Landscapes are very different during these winter months in Patagonia, as both Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks get powdered with light snow at night. 95% of all the excursions offered during the summer months remain open during the winter, offering a whole new way to experience the wilds of Patagonia. It is also very common to see Pumas during this time of the year, making it the perfect season for our Puma Tracking and Wildlife Photo Safaris.

  • Patagonia Untamed Safari
  • Average Air Temperature: 38ºF (3ºC)

Patagonia in August

Both Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks get powdered with light snow at night, giving way to some of the most spectacular views in the morning right from your hotel. It is very common to see Pumas during this time of the year, making it the perfect season for our Puma Tracking and Wildlife Photo Safaris. For those looking to escape the heat in the Northern hemisphere, traveling to Patagonia during August as couples or with the family is the perfect getaway.

Patagonia in September

September is the first month of spring in Patagonia and the Parks are gorgeous during this time of the year. Many trees in Patagonia are evergreens, and the ones that lost their foliage begin to grow it back in September, thereby giving way to vivid green colors during this time of year. Puma sightings are still quite common during this time of the year, making it a perfect option for Puma Tracking tours, as weather starts to get warmer.

  • Patagonia Select Safari (Starting September 25)
  • Average Air Temperature: 50ºF (10ºC)

Patagonia in October

Spring is beautiful in Patagonia as the greens turn very vivid during these months and natural life recovers from the winter months, giving a renewed aspect to the entire region. Days also start getting longer in October and travelers start arriving in larger numbers to the parks.

  • Average Air Temperature: 58ºF (14ºC)

Patagonia in November

November is the last month of Spring in Patagonia and the Parks are extremely green as the summer approaches. Days are longer in November and the weather is very pleasant during the day, yet you still don’t have the larger crowds of the summer months in the Parks. This allows for some great outdoor adventures each day, with good weather and no crowds.

  • Patagonia Select Safaris
  • Patagonia Immersion Safaris

Patagonia in December

In December, Patagonia transitions from spring to summer, bringing sunny days for outdoor enthusiasts. Prepare for varying weather by layering clothing and packing waterproof gear. Chile's Torres del Paine, a UNESCO gem, boasts magnificent peaks, glaciers, and azure lakes, with chances to spot elusive pumas. In Argentina's Los Glaciares, enjoy a boat tour of Lago Argentino, birdwatching, and ice trekking on Perito Moreno Glacier—just a few of the recommended activities.

Each season has its own allure, ensuring that your Patagonia experience is unforgettable no matter when you go.

The highest temperatures in Patagonia can be experienced during the summer months, where they can reach around 72°F (22°C). 3. HOW MUCH DOES A TRIP TO PATAGONIA COST?

We often get asked about the cost of a trip to Patagonia, and the answer truly depends on the type of experience you're seeking. Factors that have an important influence on the price of your trip will include trip duration, quality of accommodations, time of year when you travel, quality of guides, inclusions and more. Below is a quick summary to give you an idea on how much you might budget for a tour in Patagonia. Costs exclude flights, which we briefly touch upon below.

There is a wide variety of trips and tour options available in Patagonia, but we have worked out an average per person cost per night for the different options.

Budget Trips: On budget or backpacker trips, you can expect to pay anywhere around $100 to $200 per person, per day for a Trekking trip in Patagonia. These trips normally require you to sleep in tents or very basic refuges as you trek around the different circuits of Patagonia’s Parks. Price includes meals.

Mid-Range Trips: On mid-range Patagonia trips, you can expect to pay anywhere between $250 to $350 per person, per day for a more upscale Trekking trip in Patagonia. On these trips you normally stay in good refuges or 3-star hotels around the Parks, and they don’t require you to sleep in tents. Price includes meals.

Luxury Trips: For a luxury Patagonia tour, or a tailor-made trip, you can expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $1000+ per person, per day. These are the top-of-the-line trips in Patagonia, where you stay at the finest hotels and enjoy excellent dining experiences. Most luxury hotels offer world-class spas and are all inclusive (bar, tips, excursions, meals, transfers, etc.)

International Flights: Reaching Patagonia requires first an international flight to Santiago, Chile, or Buenos Aires, Argentina. International flights from North America generally range between $600 and $1200 USD in Economy class, depending on the timing of your booking.

Domestic Flights: Additionally, a domestic flight from either Santiago or Buenos Aires to Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales, Chile, or from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, Argentina, can cost anywhere from $150 to $500 USD roundtrip, depending on the advance purchase.

Park Fees & Gratuities: Once in Patagonia, you'll encounter park fees to access renowned sites like Torres del Paine National Park in Chile or Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. These fees vary seasonally, typically ranging from $20 to $50 USD for park access. In Argentina, the access is usually valid for the day, while in Chile, it extends up to 3 days. If you're staying at all-inclusive luxury lodges, park access is often included. We recommend you also consider funds for tips to Guides and hotel staff when visitinPatagonia. On budget trips, a standard tip is approximately $10 per day, while luxury trips may entail tips of around $20 to $30 per day. Learn more - How Much Does a Patagonia Trip Cost?

4. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SEE PATAGONIA?

The best way to experience Patagonia depends on your travel style. Quasar’s private Patagonia tours offer a more immersive alternative to the typical tour bus experience. Led by our expert naturalist Guides or available as a self-guided tour, our private safaris delve deeper into the heart of Patagonia's wilderness. With this travel style, you can enjoy the flexibility to tailor your journey, stopping at hidden gems and capturing unique moments as they unfold.

Unlike crowded buses, a private safari offers you personalized attention and park access, allowing you to immerse yourself in the region's awe-inspiring landscapes and wildlife. Whether you opt for a guided adventure or choose to navigate Patagonia on your own, each path promises unforgettable memories in one of the world's most breathtaking regions.

5. SHOULD I VISIT CHILE OR ARGENTINA FOR PATAGONIA?

The decision between Chile and Argentina for experiencing Patagonia depends on your interests. Chile offers dramatic landscapes and diverse ecosystems, while Argentina boasts iconic sites like the Perito Moreno Glacier. Consider a trip that covers both countries to fully appreciate Patagonia's diversity!

6. HOW LONG SHOULD I STAY IN PATAGONIA?

The ideal number of days for a Patagonia trip depends on your interests and activities. A minimum of 6 days is recommended to experience key highlights in both Patagonia Chile and Patagonia Argentina in the shortest amount of time. However, spending 9 or more days allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the region's natural wonders, remote parts of the parks, and immersive experiences. If you want to experience both Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia, staying longer ensures the best of both! Quasar offers a variety of itinerary options tailored to different durations, ensuring you make the most of your travel in Patagonia.

Why not see more of South America while you’re at it? Consider enhancing your Patagonia adventure with our enticing trip add-ons. With custom-designed itineraries, you can experience the otherworldly landscapes of the Atacama Desert, indulge in the delights of Chile's wine country, or discover the enigmatic Easter Island. We also have options to immerse yourself in Chiloé Island’s unique culture or explore Iguazu Falls, Bariloche, Ushuaia, and more. These pre- or post-safari experiences seamlessly complement your Patagonia exploration.

7. CAN I TRAVEL THROUGHOUT PATAGONIA WITHOUT A GUIDE?

Yes, you can travel around Patagonia without a Guide—Quasar even offers self-Guided Overland Safaris for those who want to be in the driver’s seat of their adventure. Our luxury all-terrain vehicles are equipped with pre-loaded itineraries and expert recommendations, offering a well-planned option with the flexibility of solo adventure travel.

8. DO I HAVE TO BE A MOUNTAIN CLIMBER OR HIKER TO ENJOY PATAGONIA?

In Patagonia, there are activities for travelers of all ages (from 6 to 90), abilities, and interests. It is important to travel with an organization with enough flexibility, local knowledge, and connections to tailor your travel experience to your passions. With the right balance of excursions, anyone can enjoy the depths of Patagonia at your own pace.

Can you see yourself off-roading in your own all-terrain amidst turquoise lagoons and rolling pampas, and kayaking lakes where you can reach out to touch the icebergs? What about a boat navigation to a 2.6 million year old glacier, searching for fossils, tracking Patagonia Pumas, or taking a gentle hike to the home of a 7 ft prehistoric sloth? These are just a few ideas of activities you can experience during your Quasar safari.

My husband and I did the South American landscape tour, Argentina and Chile. It was Amazing!!!! The tour as is has a great itinerary but I had a few extra things I wanted to add. Excellent route to visit Argentina under S34 lattitude if there is limited weeks for travelling that huge & fantastic land. The organisation, timing, service and, in case support/returns of agency were excellent. The periods of accomodation at selected points were also perfectly enough to visit all gorgeous places and surrounding national parks. I recommend this itinerary at top.

7-days "W Trekk" discovering Torres del Paine National Park

As a solo female traveler, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience doing the W trek. This tour company handled everything and was incredibly responsive via WhatsApp and Tour Radar with any questions or concerns I may have had. If you’re thinking of booking through a company or going alone, I can tell you I met many people on the trail who were cautionary tails of those who tired to wing it and found out that they were without accommodation, reserved food, or transport to and from the welcome center. This was an awesome company to book with, I am so relieved and thankful that I went with a company instead of trying to do all the reservations alone! Highly recommend booking!

This was a bucket list, once in a lifetime experience for my client and he was thrilled with the service he received. As a travel advisor, I have to say that communication before, during and after my clients trip was outstanding. They made it very enjoyable to do business with them.

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 9 days Tour

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 9 days

I did this trip couple of days ago and I really enjoyed it. Everything was very well organised, great itinerary and great selection of Hotels in El Calafate, El Chalten and Puerto Natales. Once we landed in El Calafate we found the bus company booked by our guides and got on the bus for El Chalten. There we did two amazing hiking trails Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre. Both of them were well maintained with magnificent views. From El Chalten a bus picked us up from our hotel and drove us back to El Calafate. There we visited the glacier national park to see Perito Moreno Glacier from the view points and from a boat (cruise) that took us very close for a better look. The guide we had was great, very knowledgeable and friendly (English, German and Spanish speaker). Then the following day, they picked us up early for our day in Torres del Paine national Park in Chile. The weather wasn't very good but it didn't rain and the view of the Torres was pretty limited (cloudy, misty) but still very impressive. From there the rest of the group went back to Argentina while we got picked up by a mini bus that took us to Puerto Natales where we spent two chilled days wandering around the town. The next day we took a taxi to the bus station where we caught the 8 o'clock bus back to El Calafate. Finally we spent one more day there and the following morning a mini bus picked us up and took us to the airport on time for our flight. To sum up, everything worked out very well and there were no problems in the hotels and the different means of transport. There was also good communication via email with the people from Say Hueque. They were very keen to see if everything was going ok for us. I would definitely recommend Say Hueque.

Trips to Patagonia Reviews

Overall, I thought this was a pretty great trip package! The BIG highlights are of course Mount Fitz Roy and Laguna Torre (El Chalten), Glacier Perito Moreno (El Calafate), and Base Las Torres (Torres Del Paine, Chile). I personally thought the initial hike of the trip though (on the 2nd day) called Laguna Amarga was a little basic, short, and not overly fascinating or challenging and maybe could've been replaced with something else? But that said, we still saw some guanacos (llama-like animals) on the path and the bulk of the Los Torres park mountains in the distance during that hike. So I guess it was okay. In terms of the accommodations, I was very very pleased with the selection, especially the first and last hotels (in Puerto Natalas, Chile, and El Chalten, Argentina). They were all pretty bouge-y / snazzy looking places with nice amenities. I wish the hotel in El Chalten had better / faster wifi though. As a side note, I bought a cell data plan for Argentina and only had Edge (slower than 3G) in El Chalten and there were also no cell service on the bus rides / roads between cities. So better and faster wifi especially in this last location would've been nice. In terms of the flow, organization, and execution of the itinerary and this travel company, A+, I must say! Drivers there to pick you up from airport / bus and transfer to hotel, waiting for you with a name card in hand. Good communication from the tour companies if there was a change in itinerary for the following day. Hotels were well picked with breakfasts included. Final thoughts? Look, if you wanted to do all the above highlights for hiking in a more budget-friendly way, sure you can find a way to do it. You can buckle down, search the places, organize the accomodations, stay at cheaper hostels, pay for taxis as you go, organize the bus transfers, not have guides on the hikes and do them all solo, etc. Therefore, you might pay a hair bit more in taking this package than you would if you figured out and just did everything yourself, but you do feel like you're living in the heart of luxury once your done the hikes. And the views and open-air, scenic experiences of those hikes are pretty great, too! 4.5 out of 5 stars

What Travelers Say About Their Patagonia Trip

I loved the EcoCamp in Patagonia--every evening, you can decide with the help of staff and fellow travelers what you'll be doing the following day, depending on how you're feeling. Every choice of activity level is top-quality. The EcoCamp represents a good balance between sustainable adventure travel and comfort, and the staff succeeds in quickly building a sense of community.

Ship and staff were great. Everyone very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful.

Smooth trip, great guides. Patagonia is obviously one of the most beautiful places on earth. Torres del Paine is almost terrifying in its beauty. The (reasonably) close contact with wildlife/birds is extraordinary.

Loved the expedition, awesome way to experience Patagonia. Excursions and zodiac rides were perfect (apart from the cold and wind). Now, back home on dry land, we're missing gazing out of our cabin window or having a pisco sour in the bar, staring at glaciers.

Patagonia/Torres del Paine was incredible. I was able to enjoy the trip of a lifetime.

I loved the EcoCamp in Patagonia--every evening, you can decide with the help of staff and fellow travelers what you'll be doing the following day, depending on how you're feeling.  Every choice of activity level is top-quality. The EcoCamp represents a good balance between sustainable adventure travel and comfort, and the staff succeeds in quickly building a sense of community among visitors and between visitors and its staff--even after just 3 days at camp, I was already saying goodbye to people who already felt like good friends (including, in particular, fabulous guides Franco, Sebastien and Pablo).

Meals Review

Unbelievably top-quality service and amazing food, both at the EcoCamp and on board Quark's Sea Adventurer. In fact, all of us guests spontaneously cheered the chef during one of our EcoCamp dinners, and the service on board the Sea Adventurer was on par with any Michelin-starred restaurant in New York City (where I live). Both venues did an excellent job managing my dietary restrictions (pescatarian).

Crew & Guides Review

Franco, Sebastien, and Pablo were simply extraordinary, with a passion for Patagonia and a genuine desire to make every guest's experience extra-special. Franco even dived after my backpack as it was rolling off a cliff; Sebastien made time to get to know each guest over dinner and drinks deep into the evenings; Pablo has an encyclopedic knowledge of local flora and fauna that turned every day trek into an unforgettable experience.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Andrew was great at providing advanced reading materials, packing lists, and answering all manner of pre-trip questions quickly and accurately. He had great advice and I consider Andrew to be primarily responsible for ensuring that this 2-in-1 trip combo worked so beautifully.

Accommodations Review

Nice clean cabin. Comfy bed. Other facilities in tip top shape.

Mostly good, some very good. They did a good job feeding 190 people, but some dishes were not the best. Would have been nice to have more fresh veggies. Also, breakfast was the same (runny scrambled eggs) every day. Some more variety, like hard boiled eggs or omelettes would have been nice. Service was terrific.

All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful. We can mention those we met: Juanita, Chris, Monica, and expedition leader Mauricio. All were great.

Be prepared for all kinds of weather and sea conditions.

Smooth trip, great guides. Patagonia is obviously one of the most beautiful places on earth. The boat trip to across the glacier lake and up to the glaciers (the second day of our safari) is exciting, reasonably safe, and breathtakingly beautiful. Torres del Paine is almost terrifying in its beauty. The (reasonably) close contact with wildlife/birds is extraordinary.

The Hotel Orly is excellent. EcoCamp is a bit rough (even in the "suites") but that is to be expected. This would not pull down our rating from excellent.

Plainly, the chef at EcoCamp takes great pride in his or her work.

Our guides in Santiago were extraordinary. The first day of our safari was beyond our physical abilities, but our guide had assured us that it would not be. Your materials had made the difficulty fairly clear, and we had decided to take the "easy" routes, but there was fairly strong pressure from our guides (and others in our group) to do this "hard" trek on our first day, when we really had no reference point to know how hard "hard" would be. We (now) understand that "trekking" is serious exercise, but that was not explained to us (I think everyone just assumed that we knew what "trekking" means; but for folks over 50, that is a relatively new concept of which many of us are not really aware). Otherwise, the rest of the safari was absolutely fabulous! (We went "easy" after that first day!) Claudio was an outstanding guide on our third day.

Clothing requirements for EcoCamp could have been clearer due to the stark changes from cold to hot (and vice versa), even within a few hours. Transportation was very smooth.

This was a trip of a lifetime (particularly because we tacked it onto the a cruise around Cape Horn, which is equally wonderful). But we are being candid about the problems mentioned above simply to offer what we hope is constructive criticism to help you improve a truly wonderful adventure even more for folks like us.

Cabin was perfect - bed comfy, shower very good, decor appropriate for expedition. Gazing out of the window was fantastic.

Meats (lamb, beef, pork) were really good, not for foodies but good quality. Breakfasts were uninspired. Lunches too elaborate - fish was at times disappointing, simple grilled fish would have been better.

Sofia was an outstanding guide - very knowledgeable with a wonderful sense of humor. All other guides and staff were wonderful, always efficient but not in your face. Really excellent, can-do team.

Itinerary Review

[We most enjoyed]...Pia glacier, Porter glacier, and Magdalena Island. We could not disembark at Cape Horn because of high winds, but that was an adventure. Enjoyed most of the documentaries. Patagonia has long been on our bucket list - we planned this tour hastily because we were planning our son's wedding at the same time. We are now in Torres del Paine, also phenomenal. Wish we had included El Calafate.

Transportation Review

We had a minor glitch with coordination for our post-cruise pickup by our hotel in Torres del Paine. We ended up off the boat at noon but had to wait until 13:30 for pickup because our transfer company didn't offer services from 12:30-1:30. Had lunch in town -  it was no big deal but we wish transfers were included.

Fellow Passengers Review

It was an international multi-age group from 13 countries. Made friends with a couple Australia and had fun interacting with many others.

Super prompt responses and overall stellar service by Andrew (and earlier by Kevin). Thanks, guys!

We highly recommend Cilene del Fuego in Ushuaia. It's rated three stars, but the rooms are brand new and spacious with killer views, right in town. They extended our checkout time to 5pm for free.

Amazing trip. I normally do a lot of research and planning but since Arielle helped to identify amazing options with a lot of structure baked into the itinerary, I was able to just tell my buddy we could show up and figure things out for the day. It reduced a lot of the typical planning burden.

Explora guides were knowledgeable and engaging. They did a better job to speak a combination of English and Spanish than guides on other parts of our trip.

I really appreciate AdventureSmith/Arielle with all the suggestions and support.

Patagonia Discovery Trek (Chile to Argentina)

What is expedition cruising.

Embark on a sea-based adventure to the remote coastal regions of our globe, where unique encounters will allow you to experience nature at its most pristine.

This type of travel was born three decades ago, nurtured by rugged adventurers keen to share the magic of the wilderness with like-minded travellers. Expedition cruising brings together those with a curiosity about the world around them, a keen sense of adventure, and a desire to immerse themselves in the natural environment.

What will I do on an Aurora Expeditions cruise?

On our expedition cruises you will sail in a small, purpose-built ship with an expert, international expedition team, through some of the most amazing seascapes on earth. In small Zodiac boats, you will search for wildlife. We land on remote beaches, where you might walk up a ridge for panoramic views or hike to see remnants of bygone eras. Our expedition team is by your side the whole time, enriching your experience with fascinating presentations and insights into remarkable places.

What do you mean by ‘expedition’?

An expedition cruise is never predictable. Every voyage is different, guided by the ever-changing weather, tides, ice conditions and our team’s deep local knowledge. We choose the best plan for each day, pushing for the ultimate experience for everyone on board. Being flexible yields incredible rewards. When we can share a spontaneous wildlife display, watch a breathtaking glacier calving or allow you a moment of true solitude, we know it’s worth it.

On an expedition cruise, we encourage you to make the most of every opportunity to nurture your inner adventurer. You can choose from a range of add-on activities to make the most of your time in these beautiful places. We have pioneered many adventure options to help you explore in your own way.

Planning your trip to Patagonia

To ensure you have an enjoyable and safe cruise or trek expedition we have developed some important pre-departure information to help you prepare. Our reservation staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Before you depart for your expedition we will send you a detailed pack including your itinerary, travel documents and any other essential information relevant to your voyage.

  • Patagonia fitness requirements
  • Patagonia trekking packing list
  • Photography tips for Patagonia

Do you provide polar expedition jackets?

Yes. Each passenger travelling will receive a complimentary polar expedition jacket to wear during your expedition and take home after your trip.

What kind of footwear do I need for our shore visits?

It is most important that you bring a comfortable pair of enclosed walking shoes to wear on board the ship. Muck boots are provided on board and are required to be worn on all landings. If you have concerns regarding extra small or large sizing, or hard-to-fit feet, we recommend you bring your own pair.

How do we dry wet clothing?

On board, you can store your wet weather gear and muck boots in your locker, found in the mudroom.

How often do we get off the ship?

We aim to get off the ship as much as possible to experience the destinations up close. Twice per day is common but more if weather, daylight hours and itinerary allow. Duration of the landings vary from site to site but at the height of the peak season, cruise operators must stick to timings allocated by authorities.

Should I bring along my own walking poles?

Yes, it’s a good idea, especially if you have trouble walking over uneven ground. Some of our landings can be on slippery rocks or deep snow, and we may go for extended walks to see different parts of our landing point. We recommend the telescopic poles, with the optional snow-basket tips. You can purchase these poles in most outdoor stores.

What if I need to go to the toilet when ashore?

Our expedition team will instruct you with these types of rules on board. Generally we ask you to relieve yourself on board before going on a landing and if the necessity arises ashore, you will be driven back to the ship.

Can I do more than one activity?

We strongly advise against selecting multiple activities as each is a dedicated activity for those with the relevant experience. To make the most of your time and money, we recommend selecting only one activity.

How fit do I need to be to travel on a Patagonian expedition?

To make the most of our voyages, you should be in good general health and able to walk reasonable distances, sometimes over uneven terrain. However, if you have problems walking on rough ground, you can enjoy the scenery closer to shore. Should you have any physical limitations please notify us well in advance of your departure, but this should not discourage you participating.

How many people on the ship?

Our ships carry an average of 132 passengers.

Where do passengers come from?

The majority of our clients come from Australia, the UK, Europe and the United States, however we do often have a mix of other nationalities on board, including our expedition team.

How much room is there for luggage?

There is ample storage space in your cabin on all our ships. Your empty baggage can be stored safely elsewhere on the ship if need be. Do you have facilities on board to download digital images from my camera?

There will be computers in the library and media room for your use.

Is the ship air-conditioned?

All our ships are air-conditioned, with the on board temperature ranging from 15°C to 25°C. You can control the temperature of your cabin by adjusting the airflow through the roof vent and turning your heater on or off.

Does the crew speak English?

The crew aboard is international and all speak English.

What is the electrical supply on board?

The electrical supply on board is 220 volts, 50 hertz. Please bring a converter if your devices use 110 volts. International electrical sockets are available in your cabin and throughout the ship. If you have many devices, it is advised you bring a multi power board.

Is there Internet, email or telephone access on board?

Onboard WiFi internet packages are available for purchase during the voyage. Telephone access for personal use is not available on board. In case of an emergency, our expedition team can facilitate communication with your family members if necessary.

What is not included in the price of the voyage?

In general, items that are not included in the cost of your voyage are: flights to and from your voyage, pre and post accommodation, transfers, drinks from the bar (alcohol and soft drinks), gratuities, Ship Shop items, laundry costs and other items of a personal nature (unless stated in your voyage inclusions). Some voyages do include certain pre- and post-cruise travel arrangements, so please check your specific voyage inclusions on the website or contact us .

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance, including medical evacuation cover, is mandatory for all Aurora Expeditions’ voyages. We advise you have insurance for voyage cancellation to ensure you will be covered financially if you are forced to cancel your voyage due to circumstances beyond your control. It is in your best interest to read carefully the General Terms & Conditions on your booking form.

How much should I tip? Are tips included, if not how much per person per day?

Gratuities/tips for crew included – to the value of USD$15 per person per day. It is at your discretion if you would like to increase/decrease the amount or remove the tip when you settle your bill. It is not necessary to tip the expedition team members.

Do you cater for special meal requests?

Yes. Our talented chefs will take your requirements into their meal planning and ensure you receive tasty, healthy meals. Please ensure you list any dietary requirements on your personal details form.

What currency do you accept on board?

The onboard currency is US dollars. All your onboard purchases including bar, laundry, ship shop, internet, and massages are charged to your shipboard account and settled by credit card or cash (US dollars only) at the end of the voyage.

Can I smoke on board?

There is a ‘No Smoking’ policy throughout the interior of our ships.

Are there hairdryers on board?

Hairdryers are provided in each cabin.

Will I get seasick?

Many people ask us if they will get seasick. It is a very difficult question to answer because it depends so much on the individual. Our experience is that a small percentage of people are seasick on any trip and most of these people are fine after a day or so at sea. If you feel that you are particularly susceptible to seasickness then it is a good idea to talk to your doctor. We advise you come armed with motion sickness tablets, and there will be a doctor on board to assist with any bouts of seasickness.

Trekking barren landscapes in Patagonia | Richard I'Anson

Occupying the southernmost reaches of South America, straddling both Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is a region of staggering beauty and environmental importance that has long captured the imagination of travelers, artists and explorers. Sparsely populated, mostly wilderness and shamelessly photogenic, this is truly a nature lover’s dream destination.

Get ready for imposing glaciers, vast ice-fields and the rugged snowcapped peaks of the Patagonian Andes; lush forests, majestic fjords and abundant wildlife—above all else, a visit to Patagonia is primarily for walking, trekking or sailing your way around the region’s spectacular collection of national parks and World Heritage Listed wilderness areas.

Hike among the raw, majestic beauty of Chile’s Torres Del Paine, possibly the world's most magnificent national park—an unrivalled landscape of jagged peaks and brilliant blue lakes; and marvel at the mountains, glaciers and stunning frozen landscapes of Los Glaciares National Park, home to the Patagonian ice cap and the colossal Perito Moreno Glacier.

Watch for southern right whales, orcas, elephant seals and sea lions on Argentina’s striking Península Valdés; experience the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Lakes District as you travel between Argentina and Chile; and soak up the fairytale beauty of Bariloche, an impossibly gorgeous lakeside city surrounded by mountains and alpine forests.

Enjoy culture, nightlife and otherworldly landscapes in Ushuaia, the world’s most southerly city; and discover the Balmaceda & Serrano Glaciers as you trace the footsteps of famous explorers and sail through the Ultima Esperanza Sound and past the Strait of Magellan.

Join us as we journey into this mind-blowing wilderness for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list!

The climate in the north of Argentina is hot (tropical and sub tropical); in the centre the weather is temperate; in the northern highlands, it's dry while the coldest conditions are experienced in the south, in the mountains of Tierra del Fuego.

The trekking season lasts all year round. During winter it's possible to trek in the north, in the jungle and desert areas, and during summer in the south – Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

The best time for climbing in the Aconcagua region is from December to March. The weather then is relatively stable, but be warned the weather can still change completely in a matter of hours. The winds can be very strong. Needless to say, on days like that, we stay put. It can also get extremely cold on the upper slopes of the mountain; temperatures can drop to -20°C or lower with the wind chill factor. Warm clothes and a good down jacket are essentials items for the climb.

Mendoza, at 760m, enjoys a Mediterranean style climate in summer, as a result of a rain shadow effect from Aconcagua and other Andean peaks that separate it from the Pacific Ocean and prevailing weather. The region has a consistent supply of water, however, from rivers that are fed by nearby glaciers, and make it well suited to irrigation style farming such as vineyards and olives.

Time in Patagonia

Argentina is -3 hours behind UTC/GMT

Spanish (official), Italian, English, German, French, indigenous languages (Mapudungun, Quechua)

Spanish is most definitely the national language, although here it is spoken with several different regional accents, and includes many borrowed words from other languages, in particular Italian. Many different European languages (and dialects/accents within those) can be heard throughout the country, especially Italian, which is still widely spoken in Buenos Aires.

A curious lingua franca called Lunfardo developed in Buenos Aires towards the end of the 19th century, composed of many different languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German and different African languages. Lunfardo was developed as a common slang language by the city’s criminal underworld, and was then picked up by lower classes, then spread to all classes from the start of the 20th century. The language can often be heard in the lyrics of tango music.

andBeyond and Quark Expeditions are partnering up for a 19-day expedition across Chile, Argentina, and Antarctica in February 2025.

Whether you're planning your first visit to Antarctica or a return trip, andBeyond has a new dream itinerary that might pique your interest — particularly if you travel with conservation in mind.

In February 2025, the luxury travel company will partner with Quark Expeditions to host a 19-day voyage to South America and Antarctica by land and sea, accompanied by acclaimed conservationist and philanthropist Kristine (Kris) McDivitt Tompkins.

David Merron Photography/Getty Images; Courtesy of andBeyond

Tompkins, the former CEO of gear company Patagonia, Inc ., established Tompkins Conservation with her late husband, Doug; the nonprofit was responsible for the formation of Chile's Patagonia National Park in 2018. During the trip, Tompkins will share stories about her experience creating a national park, as well as personal anecdotes from her many adventures.

Sam Crimmin/Courtesy of andBeyond

The trip begins in Santiago, Chile, before continuing into Torres del Paine National Park, where travelers will go on a Patagonian safari with puma researchers to learn about their conservation efforts. Then you'll travel to Punta Arenas, Chile, where you'll enjoy a full-day excursion to Cabo Froward, the southernmost point in South America known for its wildlife, ranging from sei whales to Magellanic penguins. From there, it's off to Ushuaia, Argentina, and onward to Antarctica aboard Quark Expeditions' Ultramarine, an upscale expedition ship outfitted with two helicopters for aerial exploration.

“We are thrilled to be working closely with other organizations that reflect our own values,” Pedro Barraza, andBeyond's managing director in South America, said in a statement. “andBeyond has a long-standing relationship with Kris Tompkins and her teams, with our conservation experts from Africa having provided advice and support to both Rewilding Chile and Rewilding Argentina in preparation for their wildlife reintroduction projects. We also relish the opportunity to partner with Quark Expeditions, whose Polar Promise principles reflect our own motto of care of land, wildlife, and people.”

The trip, which departs on Feb. 25, 2025, includes three meals a day (including everything but premium spirits and wine), all excursions, and charter flights, and it's limited to just 14 guests. Rates start at $34,400 per person and can be booked at andbeyond.com .

Quark expeditions blazes a new trail with spectacular helicopter-supported voyage through patagonia.

SEATTLE , April 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Quark Expeditions, the global leader in polar adventures, has blazed a new trail in expedition travel with its inaugural helicopter-supported voyage through Chilean Patagonia. The polar operator also confirms that 90 of the 165 passengers (55%) who joined the maiden voyage of "Essential Patagonia: Chilean Fjords and Torres del Paine " in March 2024 were repeat guests of Quark Expeditions.

"Once again we credit our expedition team—recognized as the best in the polar industry—and our longstanding commitment to innovation for this highly successful maiden voyage," says Andrew White , President of Quark Expeditions. "Working closely with local partners, our team created off-ship experiences unheard of in Patagonia adventure travel. Thanks to our technologically-advanced ship, Ultramarine , and its two twin-engine helicopters and fleet of 20 quick-deploy Zodiacs, we made it possible for our guests to see more, do more and explore more deeply in Patagonia than they could with a traditional land-based operator."

The 15-day itinerary, which ran March 13 to 27 , 2024, departed Buenos Aires with embarkation from Ushuaia, and included Cape Horn, a transit through the Beagle Channel, then into Chile's spectacular network of fjords and channels, featuring helicopter flightseeing and Zodiac cruises along an enchanting stretch of coastline that's known for some of the most remote and picturesque landscapes on Earth.

Quark Expeditions Blazes New Trail With Helicopter-Supported Patagonia Voyage

WHY IT RATES: Add an even bigger element of adventure to your next vacation with a helicopter-supported voyage.—Donald Wood, Breaking News Senior Writer.

Quark Expeditions, the global leader in polar adventures, has blazed a new trail in expedition travel with its inaugural helicopter-supported voyage through Chilean Patagonia. The polar operator also confirms that 90 of the 165 passengers (55%) who joined the maiden voyage of "Essential Patagonia: Chilean Fjords and Torres del Paine" in March 2024 were repeat guests of Quark Expeditions.

"Once again we credit our expedition team—recognized as the best in the polar industry—and our longstanding commitment to innovation for this highly successful maiden voyage," says Andrew White, President of Quark Expeditions. "Working closely with local partners, our team created off-ship experiences unheard of in Patagonia adventure travel. Thanks to our technologically-advanced ship, Ultramarine, and its two twin-engine helicopters and fleet of 20 quick-deploy Zodiacs, we made it possible for our guests to see more, do more and explore more deeply in Patagonia than they could with a traditional land-based operator."

The 15-day itinerary, which ran March 13 to 27, 2024, departed Buenos Aires with embarkation from Ushuaia, and included Cape Horn, a transit through the Beagle Channel, then into Chile's spectacular network of fjords and channels, featuring helicopter flightseeing and Zodiac cruises along an enchanting stretch of coastline that's known for some of the most remote and picturesque landscapes on Earth.
