20 Top Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations for You and Your Best Travel Buddy

Calling everyone who can't bear the thought of not being with your dog for more than 24 hours... here's the perfect guide to exploring the world with your furry companion.

  • Choosing a Destination
  • International

It was mid-2008 when Amy Burkert and her husband Rod found themselves adopting a stray German shepherd . The puppy was found near their home in Philadelphia, and after a few weeks of looking for his family to no avail, they decided to adopt him as their own and name him Buster. The issue? The couple, who at the time had a small dog named Ty, was planning a huge trip up to Canada about a month later and hadn't accounted for two dogs coming along.

Burkert searched online for dog-friendly hotels and dog parks along their route but didn't come up with much. The trip went well, but the experience taught her that other people probably were also looking for the same information.

In 2009, she launched GoPetFriendly.com , a comprehensive pet travel platform that quickly took off. Soon after, she and Rod, both who work remotely for their CPA firm, sold their place in Philly, hit the road in an RV, and haven't looked back since.

"In a few months, we will have been on the road for 11 years," Burkert says, adding that Ty and Buster have sadly passed, and they now have a new pup named Myles. "We love it, and by doing that with our dogs, we are walking the talk."

Since we're all attached to our dogs at the hip, here are some of Burkert's recommendations for how you can bring them along for a vacation.

How to Choose a Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination

Consider your itinerary.

There are many things to consider when traveling with your dog , from where you'll go to how you'll get there to fun activities to do along the way. While in the decision-making phase, Burkert recommends thinking about what you and your dog like to do together first.

"Do you like to go to the beach?" she asks. "What about hiking? Exploring cities? Or sitting at a coffee shop watching people walk by? It's important to think about how much your dog physically can and would want to do and what you'd want to do together."

And be prepared to make a few sacrifices for your four-legged companion. Dog-friendly vacation spots can come in various forms. Taking a road trip with your dog to New York City, for example, may not seem like a good spot because of the population density, but there are actually tons of great green spaces for your dog to play.

"That said, you might consider sacrificing your trip to the Guggenheim if you're with your dog," she says.

Think About Where You'll Stay

Your choice of accommodations is another important thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. While some locations have hotels that allow pets , other destinations with more natural surroundings might require flexible arrangements like renting a unique Airbnb or camping.

"A lot of people think that camping is a wonderful thing to do with a dog on vacation, but not if you're planning on leaving him or her in the camper all day," Burkert says. "That isn't much of a vacation for your pet. Instead, try to find a place that will work for you both."

As you decide the best vacation destination for your family (fur babies included), these Burkert-recommended places both domestic and international might just do the trick.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the East Coast

Eastern vermont.

Among the places on the East Coast to take your dog on vacation, a place called Dog Mountain in the Eastern Vermont town of St. Johnsbury ranks highly for Burkert.

"The people managing it have turned what was a dairy farm into an off-leash dog heaven," she says. "There is a pond, trails, even a dog chapel."

Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

The town of Jim Thorpe , Pennsylvania, is home to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which offers breathtaking trips through the Pocono Mountains. According to Burkert , the trip is a must for dog owners and is among the best dog-friendly vacation spots in the eastern U.S.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The 5,500-person town of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island is a great place to bring your pet companion, especially if you're interested in hiking at Acadia National Park . This island is the best of both worlds with mountains and sandy beaches within the park, and pet-friendly patios for eating in town. Doggie visitors are encouraged and there are tons of trails both you and your pup will enjoy.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the West Coast

Bend, oregon.

The 100,000-person town in central Oregon is so obsessed with dogs that they are allowed almost everywhere. Dog-friendly hiking trails are abundant at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, and within the city limits, you'll find many outdoor food carts , food truck parks, and breweries (including the award-winning Deschutes Brewery ), all of which welcome dogs.

San Diego, California

Sunny San Diego is among one of the best dog-friendly vacation spots thanks to its many open areas that accommodate them. If your pup likes to play on the beach, there are plenty of dog beaches and off-leash dog parks in and around this SoCal city. Check out Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, or Morley Field Dog Park in San Diego's famed Balboa Park .

If you're a lover of the sea, take advantage of SD's coastal location and rent a boat or a yacht to let your dog feel the wind in her hair. If you're looking for an activity that will satisfy your pup's competitive nature, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park where they have a special viewing area called The Barkyard just for people and their pets.

Northern Arizona

Many people are surprised to learn that Grand Canyon National Park , located in Northern Arizona, is a vacation spot that allows dogs. As Burkert explains , the South Rim is your best bet if you're bringing your furry friend.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Midwest

Chicago, illinois.

"I love going to Chicago with dogs ," says Burkert. She suggests checking out the trails along Lake Michigan and exploring Navy Pier, as just a few examples of things to do.

When you get hungry, grab a slice on the patio with your pup at Paradise Park or a pint at Empirical Brewery , which is also home to a colony of beloved brewery cats .

Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven is a picturesque town on Michigan's West Coast loved by tourists and their dog companions alike, mainly for the number of greenspaces and beaches. Grand Haven City Beach is a great place to go with your pup on a warm summer day. The vacation town even boasts the Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa , a pet-friendly shopping spot where you can bring your pup to sniff around the store.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is filled with great places to take your dog on vacation, including breweries, outdoor restaurants, and open spaces like White River State Park . The city's growing number of outdoor dining spots that allow dogs makes Indy a no-brainer for foodies bringing along their fur babies.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Southern U.S.

Asheville, north carolina.

The sprawling Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., allows dogs on its grounds and outdoor patios (but not inside buildings). Still, at more than 8,000 acres to explore, it's absolutely worth bringing along the pooch, especially on a beautiful day. Once you've gotten your steps in stomping around the mansion gardens, the nearby town of Asheville has a ton of pet-friendly activities for the two of you to take on, as well. Check out the street art in downtown Asheville, or sniff out some local goodies at one of the town's many bustling outdoor farmer's markets. After you've gotten your fix of city life, head out to explore the miles of trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and book a camping spot for your and your furry friend to soak in the sounds of nature.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is one of the most dog-friendly U.S. cities on our list, featuring many pets-allowed restaurants like Brown Dog Deli and Poogan's Porch , named after the friendly neighborhood dog who greeted guests until he passed in 1979.

If your dog wants to live like a princess for a day, Charleston Carriage Works offers historical tours of the city and allows dogs to come along for the ride in style. When you're ready to stretch your legs, check out Charleston's beaches at Sullivan's Island and Morris Island . If the weather isn't favorable, take your dog for a dip in the indoor dog pool at Wag-n-Splash .

Sarasota, Florida

Brohard Beach and Paw Park is among the top places to go in Sarasota if you have a pup in tow. The beach is especially accommodating for pet parents with its dog showers and fire hydrants for puppy bathroom breaks, according to Burkert.

International Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas

Before you head out on an international adventure with your favorite travel buddy, keep in mind that there can be potential health risks when taking your dog on long flights . It may make more sense to explore the spots where you can safely bring your dog along in the car on a road trip, or even via train travel , before booking a trip to one of these pet-friendly international cities. As always, it's best to talk with your veterinarian about whether it's safe for your dog to accompany you on long flights or to visit other countries. Your vet will help you understand the risks and what you need to know before your pup gets a new passport stamp.

Venice, Italy

While may not be many sprawling greenspaces in Venice, dogs are still welcome in the charming Italian city limits. Pups are allowed in many water boats and are able to stroll the street with you. Just be aware that sometimes the small alleyways can be crushingly busy, so it's best to go in the off-season in November–March so your pup's not overwhelmed with the crowds.

Tokyo, Japan

Japan celebrates six native dog breeds , called the Nihon Ken, which have been designated as national monuments. So as you can imagine, the country is incredibly dog-friendly . Dogs are allowed in hotels, stores, and some restaurants, and there are tons of dog parks for them to run in cities like Tokyo. Some of the best of the capital city include Yoyogi Park Dog Run , Honmoku Sancho Park , and Ueno Park .

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Recognized as one of North America's most dog-friendly cities, Vancouver is well-known as a great destination for dogs and their human counterparts looking for an adventure. While here, make a stop at any (or all!) of the great beaches or off-leash parks throughout the city, and don't miss a day playing at the world-renowned Stanley Park and Arboretum.

When you get hungry, take an afternoon stroll through the Mainstreet Station Farmer's Market on Wednesdays in the summer months. Or explore all that Granville Island public market has to offer, from food to art to some pretty cool historical architecture, any day of the week. Outside of the city limits, Vancouver also has a lot to offer nature lovers, including some of the best hiking you'll ever do in every season.

How to Travel with Pets? (Complete Guide)

Avatar

Leaving behind your family member can seem inconceivable to some pet owners.

Many of us would love to take our pets with us everywhere, but following regulations can make traveling with pets complicated.

But, if you understand what you need to do in advance of your trip and plan accordingly, traveling with your pet is completely doable.

Things to Consider Before Traveling With Your Pet

Before traveling, you’ll need to consider a variety of things when it comes to your pet.

Car travel between states is pretty simple, just keep them comfortable and make pit stops when necessary. However, keep in mind that individual states may have their own entry regulations for pets.

  • What Kind of Pet Do You Have?

Cats and dogs are the easiest travel companions. Many airlines allow most small dogs and cats, whether in-cabin or as checked luggage, in the cargo hold. Also, almost every country accepts them.

If you’re traveling with pets other than a dog or a cat, you’ll need to find specific regulations about travel and entry into the country or state you’re entering. Exotic pets like monkeys, snakes, and birds have different entry requirements and additional restrictions.

Before taking your pet on a trip , you’ll need to schedule a trip to a US licensed veterinarian for a checkup and be sure they’re a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Listen to your vet’s advice about whether your pet is healthy enough to travel and have them help you research requirements for your final destination.

Additionally, make sure your pet has all the required vaccinations while you’re at the vet. If you don’t have them, you’ll need to apply for a CDC Dog Import Permit, especially if you’re coming from high-risk countries. Your dog’s rabies vaccination is the most important, as many places are considered high-risk countries for contracting rabies in dogs.

The vet may also need to do bloodwork.

Plus, they can help you with microchips and permits, but be sure to get a health certificate.

  • What Should You Bring?

Of course, you’re going to need an approved pet carrier to fly with your pet. Maximum dimensions for in-cabin pet carriers are 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high for hard-sided kennels and 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches tall for soft-sided kennels.

The pet must be able to stand in a natural position and have enough room to turn around in the carrier. Regulations vary by airline, but usually, you can only house animals of the same species together in carriers, and for dogs and cats, only one animal may be in a single crate.

Bring your pet’s food with you as well. New food and water can result in upset stomachs and even sickness in your animals. Also, be sure to bring blankets or toys for comfort.

  • Keeping Your Pet Comfortable

Before traveling get your dog or cat used to their carrier. They need to feel comfortable spending long periods put away, as you’ll have to keep them inside during the entire flight. Overall, if they can’t stand being in a crate, you shouldn’t travel with them.

You should also give your pet a light meal about three hours before they travel.

  • Airline Regulations

To start, not complying with airline regulations can result in them denying you entry.

Each airline has individual regulations for travel safety. For example, on some aircraft, people traveling with animals must have a window seat. However, most flights accept pets and have similar rules, but they also consider the type of pet and destination regulations.

Any live animal must stay inside an approved travel carrier while inside the airport, during the flight, and inside an airport.

Whether you’re traveling internationally or domestically, your airline considers your in-cabin pets a carry-on bag. Thus, you cannot bring a pet, a carry-on bag, and a personal item.

A pet traveling on domestic flights or international flights will have slightly different requirements when it comes to age. Check your airline’s guidelines for both international travel and domestic travel.

Also, some flights only accept checked pets for active-duty military personnel. You’ll need to have all the proper documentation for your pet, valid US-issued active orders, and check-in early both on the phone and at the ticket counter to fly.

Almost all flights accept service animals. You can find more information in your airline’s accessibility guidelines. They will need their rabies vaccination and all documentation, sometimes including a CDC Dog Import Permit.

Your pet may need to spend time in an approved port facility for a quarantine period upon entering the US. This regulation applies to both in-cabin and checked carriers.

Approved ports in the United States are at:

  • Anchorage (ANC)
  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Boston (BOS)
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Dallas (DFW)
  • Detroit (DTW)
  • Honolulu (HNL)
  • Houston (IAH)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Minneapolis (MSP)
  • New York (JFK)
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Philadelphia (PHL)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • San Juan (SJU)
  • Seattle (SEA)
  • Washington DC (IAD)

Most of these airports allow pets to travel on a connecting flight as well.

  • What About Car Trips?

Car trips are much simpler than air travel. You can let your dog or cat sit in the front seat with you, the back seat, or the cargo area. Pets traveling this way have the advantage of being next to their owners and outside of carriers.

Just be sure to stop and take a long walk with your pet during your trip because it gives them time to relieve themselves and stretch their muscles.

Furthermore, you should bring waste bags to pick up after them, be aware of state entry regulations, avoid extreme heat, and keep your dog or cat calm.

  • What About Cruise Ships?

For the most part, cruise ships do not allow pets on board. Few lines will allow you to bring a pet, and restrictions apply. Most of the time, you’ll need to book your pets into a special kennel on board.

However, you can bring service dogs on cruises.

If you do travel with your pet on a cruise, animals allowed on cruises are subject to the same regulations and quarantine periods as they are when entering the US on a plane.

  • Other Options

Train travel is another option but check the rules before you leave.

If you can’t travel safely with your animal, you might need to put your pet into a boarding kennel while you’re gone. Otherwise, get a trusted friend to watch them.

  • Quick Notes

The Center for Disease Control does not require cats arriving in the US to be vaccinated for rabies, but many states require it.

Also, dogs arriving into the US from a high-risk country will be denied boarding if they don’t have a permit because of their classification as high risk for dog rabies.

In the end, you’ll need to discuss traveling with your pet with your vet and check individual airline and country regulations for your cats or dogs. Avoid traveling to a high-risk country, make sure they can handle being in a carry-on carrier, and don’t expect airline staff to be responsible for your dogs or any other in-cabin pets you bring along.

Entertaining dogs on long car rides.

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | May 03, 2024

Long car rides can be a blast for humans, but for our furry companions, they can be a bit of a ruff experience. Dogs, while often great travel companions, can get restless and anxious during extended periods in the car. However, with a little creativity and some preparation, our drivers can turn that potentially stressful journey into a tail-wagging adventure for your four-legged friends

How to travel safely to new destinations with your pet

Preparing to take your pet on vacation includes hotel accommodations, transportation safety, packing supplies, and more!

Are you craving a vacation? You're not the only one who's ready to bask in the spring sunshine and explore new places. Your pets are just as eager as you, if not more.

If you plan to bring your pet on your next adventure, there are several things you'll need to do to prepare. Here is your comprehensive guide to planning a pet-friendly excursion.

Deciding where to go

Public places like beaches, parks, and hiking trails are almost always pet-friendly. Watch out for signs saying otherwise, but in most cases, you can enjoy a vacation or a staycation with your pet in these places. Sightseeing in a new city can lead to some unique photos with your pet if you can get them to sit still long enough with all the new stimuli. Restaurants and wineries are a huge part of tourism as well. You'll probably need to call ahead or check their website to confirm you can bring your pet, but many places will allow it, especially if they offer outdoor seating.

Where will you stay?

Whenever you travel somewhere new, you'll need a place to stay overnight. Bunking with family or friends makes it easy, especially if they don't have any pets or their pets get along with yours. If you need to stay in a hotel, be prepared for rejection or a nightly pet fee. Always call ahead to verify the hotel is pet-friendly. Most hotels don't allow check-in until the afternoon, so you should plan your arrival around that time. Otherwise, you'll need a pet-friendly place to stall before you can get into your room.

How will you get there?

Each travel company has its own pet policy, and you don't want to hear that you can't board because your pet isn't allowed.

For flights: Short-nosed pets struggle to breathe at higher altitudes, so flying is not recommended at all for those breeds. Flying in the cabin is always better than flying in the cargo space. Plan for extra time at security gates, acclimate your pet to their travel carrier in advance, and choose direct flights whenever possible.

For the road: Always secure your pet in the backseat of your vehicle. Place them in a crate or travel carrier if your pet likes to move a lot. If you open the windows for some air, try to prevent your pet from sticking their head outside because they can be injured by flying debris or develop an infection from the gusts of cold air. Plan for rest stops, and don't leave your pet in the car alone because the temperature can rise quickly and harm them. Train and bus rides are similar, but you'll likely be forced to put your pet in a carrier and possibly in a designated space for them. You'll also have to coordinate potty breaks around the stops that are built into the itinerary.

What to bring

It never hurts to be over-prepared, but sometimes traveling doesn't allow for that. You only have limited space, so make it count with the essentials.

  • Food and water: Measure out enough meals for how many days you'll be gone, and pack a few extra scoops for an emergency. Bring a travel bottle for giving your pet water on the go.
  • Wet food and familiar bowls: Many pets will refuse to eat their food in an unfamiliar setting. Wet food is almost irresistible, so pack a can or two to help coax your pet to eat if they're acting stubborn. Your pet may respond better to mealtime if you bring bowls they know. Familiarize them with some travel bowls before you leave.
  • Collar, leash, and harness: Make sure your pet's tags are current on the collar you bring. Don't forget a harness for longer walks. Most places will require you to keep your pet on a leash, so definitely don't forget to pack one of those, too.
  • Treats: Giving your pet little bonuses throughout your trip will keep them in good spirits, especially if they show any signs of fear or reluctance. You might also try some of the calming treats on the market that can help your pet relax during travel. Make sure you talk to your veterinarian before giving your pet any new treats or substances, though.
  • Toys: A bored pet can become a destructive pet . Make sure your pet has some entertainment if you plan on leaving them alone in a hotel room. A damage fee is the worst way to end a vacation.

Before you leave, make sure your pet has received flea and tick medication recently, especially if you're going to a place where these parasites are common. Also, take note of potential hazards like poisonous plants or extreme weather that might harm your pet. Ultimately, preparation is your best option for protecting your furry friend and having a delightful time with them on vacation.

Rabies Countries:

Although there are various diseases that pet dogs, cats and ferrets can host, there are none considered more serious than rabies. If you are traveling internationally, the first thing you must do is to find out the rabies classification of the country your pet is leaving from according to the country your pet is traveling to. The World Organization for Animal Health classifies countries as rabies-free, rabies-controlled or high-risk. Although the European Union has a uniform list of country classifications which is considered standard, many countries have their own classifications.

The 23 Best Places to Travel with Your Dog This Summer

pet travel near me

As a dog parent, jetting off on a vacation can feel like more trouble than it’s worth. Even if you hire a trustworthy dog sitter, set up pet playdates, and leave enough treats behind to feed a whole pack, you might constantly worry that your pup isn’t getting enough snuggles or sleep or attention. Plus, it’s tough to be away from your furry best friend — even if just for a weekend.

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to choose between a much-needed vacation and time with your pooch! You can have it all at travel destinations across the United States that welcome dogs as esteemed guests. We partnered with  Pumpkin , the best-in-class pet insurance and wellness care provider, to select the best places for pet parents to visit with their dogs this summer. Whether a beach lover, camper, adventurer, hiker, foodie, swimmer, or more, these 23 dog-pampering destinations from Cape Cod to Southern California will be sure to keep everyone’s tail wagging.

Rutland, Vermont: The Paw House Inn

This dog hotel is more dog-friendly than it is human-friendly — they actually charge you a $10 fee if you don’t bring a dog. Conveniently located only miles from hundreds of dog-friendly outdoor destinations — such as Chaffee Falls (a hidden gem swimming spot), Pico Mountain (a challenging yet rewarding hike), Long Trail Brewery (a classic Vermont brewery), and even the Lincoln Family Home — The Paw House Inn is Vermont’s go-to dog house. The property’s Paw House Park is an off-leash, fenced-in park where dogs can romp and socialize, and Mario’s Playhouse is a custom-built doggie-day-care facility for when you’re looking to shed your puppy parent duties for a day of exploring or a night on the town. At the Paw House Inn, you can trust that your pup is in very good paws.

Pilot Point, Texas: Waggin’ Tail Ranch RV Resort

The Waggin’ Tail Ranch RV Resort works hard to keep the promise embedded in its name. This rustic-meets-modern RV Park is a resort that “caters to dogs,” offering an elaborate agility course, doggie day care program, dog wash/dog litter stations, and a separate swimming pond for pups. The resort also incorporates a community pavilion, outdoor cooking space, community garden, kids play area, and lawn game area — all of which welcome dogs. The RV sites are fully fenced for maximum dog security, and there’s even a “laundromutt” (which is really just a laundromat with a cute name) for when you need a fresh set of T-shirts. The welcoming, dog-loving, tight-knit family culture of the Waggin’ Tail Ranch keeps guests coming back year after year.

Boulder City, Nevada: Rail Explorers

Rail Explorers is a year-round outdoor-adventure attraction featuring pedal-powered rail bikes for all ages; it’s a way to experience the magic of the railroad from outside a train, taking in the landscape as you ride. It’s been a go-to for family-friendly adventures, and they now invite riders to bring their furry canine friends with them. Rail Explorers’ bikes accommodate larger dogs on the platform between the human riders’ seats (though huge dogs might not fit), and small dogs may also ride while strapped in a carrier to their owner. If you and your doggo both happen to be athletic thrill-seekers, then Rail Explorers is the place for you. Plus, bustling Las Vegas is only about thirty minutes away; for a luxury experience in Sin City, you can stay overnight at Delano Las Vegas , which allows one or two dogs with a combined weight of less than 100 pounds.

Greenough, Montana: The Resort at Paws Up

Set on 37,000 acres of pristine Montana landscapes, The Resort at Paws Up will not only welcome your best friend, but cater to them. The pet fee is only $50 per night, and amenities include The Last Best Doggie Bed, a dog dish, locally made treats, a dog-friendly hiking trail map, a tennis ball, and an adorable welcome card from the owner’s dog, Coco. The resort’s accommodation options feature a private home or safari-style luxury tent, and either choice will have you feeling right at home among Montana’s gorgeous scenery. Plus, there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time outdoors, including horseback riding, trail adventures, climbing pursuits, and lake activities. It’s virtually impossible to run out of things to do.

Alamogordo, New Mexico: White Sands National Park

You’ve seen sand by the ocean, but the white sand at  White Sands National Park  takes that experience to the next level. It’s the largest gypsum dune field in the world, and it’s so expansive it can literally be seen from space. And unlike most national parks, White Sands allows leashed dogs the same access as it allows people (except inside buildings). This means that there are miles and miles of soft sand and dunes for you and your canine to explore. However, bring lots of water and be wary of hot temperatures under the paws, as temperatures at the park can reach extreme heights in the summertime. After you and your doggo have exhausted yourselves for the day, you can go back to the nearby  Quality Inn & Suites Near White Sands National Monument  for a comfortable refresh.

Washington, D.C.: Hotel Madera

Those planning a visit to D.C.'s central Dupont Circle with their furry friends will delight in  Bark and Park Package at Hotel Madera . The pet-friendly amenity goes beyond the hotel’s standard canine accoutrements — complimentary treats, food bowls, pet beds, waste bags, and fur baby door hangers — to provide a list of pet-friendly parks and eateries in the area, including  the terrace at Firefly  and nearby  Glen’s Garden Market . As an added bonus, the hotel offers complimentary overnight valet parking; when you need your car — perhaps for a trip to the  National Mall  — the hotel will  fetch  it. The package starts at $199 per night.

If you want to venture outside the resort, there is a railroad-turned-bike path and special bird watching spots nearby. The best part? Your dog has a built-in best friend and frolic buddy throughout your stay, as the resort is home to the cutest White Siberian Husky, Heidi.

Mt. Hood, Oregon: Lavender Valley Farms

It’s an unforgettable, fragrance-filled experience like no other, made extra special with your canine companion by your side. Plus, dogs find the smell of lavender endlessly soothing, so this is a great getaway if your pup is a little on the anxious side. For overnight lodging, head to Cooper Spur Mountain Resort . Only twenty minutes from Lavender Valley Farms, this cozy resort with dog-friendly units features relaxing hot tubs and easy access to Mount Hood National Forest .

San Diego, California: Thousand Trails Pio Pico RV Resort and Campground

The whole resort and campground is pet-friendly and includes an awesome onsite dog park. There’s no reason why your four-legged family member shouldn’t get to make some new puppy pals while on vacation.

But the dog-friendly area surrounding your stay is really the star of the show. Located at the beautiful Nantucket Boat Basin, the cottages are the closest thing to staying on the water without being on a boat, and there’s ample space to stretch your legs or just enjoy the scenery. Trusty concierge Bailey takes his job very seriously and will gladly brief you and your dog on the best places to run wild, play fetch, and eat lunch.

St. Louis, Missouri: Gateway Arch National Park

St. Louis’s Gateway Arch National Park is a dog-friendly destination that combines grace, simplicity, and an abundance of green space. An urban national park disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the city, the park stretches all the way from the Old Courthouse (built in the 1800s) to the Mississippi River Overlook. While you enjoy the views and absorb the local history, your dog will relish exploring the trails and napping on the grass. When you’re hungry, the park is the perfect place to picnic with your pup; vendors on the park’s outskirts sell delicious snacks as well as doggie water bowls. The park even hosts a Pups on the Gateway Arch event, where your dog can take the pledge to become a National Park-protecting B.A.R.K. Ranger. For lodging, check out Drury Plaza St. Louis at the Arch ; not only does it welcome dogs, but it’s less than five minutes from the national park.

Chicago, Illinois: Kimpton Gray

If you’re hoping to see The Bean and eat some Chicago caramel corn on your next trip, then look no further than Chicago’s Kimpton Gray hotel. Kimpton believes that having a pet shouldn’t stop you from seeing new places. As long as your pet fits through the door, they’re welcome guests for no additional cost. Kimpton prides itself on being an exceptionally pet-friendly hotel brand, and they’ve truly gone above and beyond. A stay at the Kimpton Gray means a welcome treat and hand-made bow-tie, in-room amenities like a dog bed and dog bowls, and a Kimpton Spotify Pet Playlist for de-stressing you and your pet in the event you find a poo where it shouldn’t be. What’s more, their recently-initiated Pawtraits at Gray program gives those that sign up a welcome package that includes a hand-drawn charcoal drawing of your dog by a local artist — as long as you share your favorite dog photo seven days prior to arrival. And outside the hotel is equally as dog-friendly; popular activities include a trip to Montrose Dog Beach , a Mercury’s Canine Cruise (yes, dogs on a boat!), and a walk on the Valley Line Trail .

Mendocino, California: The Stanford Inn

The Stanford Inn is no stranger to animal guests, as they’ve hosted dogs, cats, iguanas, parrots, a tortoise, and even Vietnamese pot belly pigs throughout the years. With two beloved dogs themselves (and plenty of other animals, such as horses and donkeys, on the grounds), the Inn’s owners were among the first bed and breakfast innkeepers in California to welcome pets. They will treat your doggo like family, as the inn supplies bowls for food and water, litter bags, treats, and furniture covers so that your stay remains stress-free. This destination was even featured in a 2021 Dogtrekker article, illustrating the inn’s wellness-focused activities (such as yoga, acupuncture, massages, and more) and delicious plant-based dining options for humans and canines alike.

About 1,469 acres wide, this massive state park hosts every activity (literally) under the sun. You and your pup can enjoy some well-deserved solitude with hiking, picnicking, fishing, boating, stargazing, camping, and soaking in the outdoor air. These Are the Top 10 Most Pet-friendly Cities in America, According to New Ranking

The survey factored in things like the amount of pet-friendly hotels, dog-friendly restaurants, cat cafes, veterinary services, and percentage of pet owners in each city.

pet travel near me

For many pet owners, the worst part about travel is leaving their four-legged companions at home, but thankfully there are locations across the U.S. that just so happen to be perfect for pets.

According to a ranking by blog All About Cats, the most pet-friendly destination is Portland, Ore. The west coast city is extremely animal-friendly, with about 60% of the population being pet owners. The city also ranked within the top 10 for most dog-friendly restaurants and charted at number three for the most dog-friendly hotels. And it's also an ideal destination for dogs who love to be outside with 33 dog parks, the highest dog park per capita ratio in the country. And, in the event that something goes wrong while traveling, there are also almost 300 different veterinary clinics within Portland.

A close second in the rankings was Austin, Texas. There, pet owners will find the highest number of cat cafes (six) and 34 different dog-friendly restaurants, the third most of any city in America.

In order to rank the cities, the survey considered several different factors like the amount of pet-friendly hotels, dog-friendly restaurants, cat cafes, veterinary services, and percentage of pet owners in each city. From those stats, each city was given a pet friendly score out of a possible 10 points.

But of course, numbers aren't everything. If you're a foodie with Fido, all signs point to booking a trip to San Diego . The California city has 54 dog-friendly restaurants, the most of any in the country. Good reads by petsafe®, how to prevent your pet from developing joint issues.

Deteriorating joints are a health concern that we share with our pets, especially as we get older together. Just like us, our dogs and cats can develop bad hips, knees, elbows and more. There are many ways to help a pet that's getting on in years and needs support getting around the house or in and out of the car. However, the best way to deal with joint issues is to take proactive measures to prevent them while your pet is still young. Luckily, there are a variety of tools, therapies and tips available to help your young pets stay spry, and to help your older pets keep up.

Chipotle is giving away 100,000 burritos for National Nurses Week. And you don't necessarily have to be a nurse to get in on the deal.

From Monday, May 6, to Friday, May 10, healthcare workers can sign up for a chance to win a free burrito e-card on the Chipotle website . At the end of National Nurses Week, 100,000 healthcare workers will be randomly selected to get an email asking them to verify their employment status via ID.me. Those who successfully verify that within 48 hours will get a free burrito e-card.

Customers can get in on the action, too, by purchasing limited-edition Chipotle Healthcare Heroes E-Gift Cards online; 10% of the proceeds from the gift card purchases will be donated to the American Nurses Foundation. And throughout the month of May, you can round up your online or app orders to the nearest dollar amount. 100% of those proceeds will go to the foundation.

National Nurses Week 2024: A RN reflects on the state of the profession, calls for change

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.
