Jay Monahan shuts down a big rumor about the PGA Tour's future

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan announced a number of enhancements to the tour and its schedule to both improve its product and incentivize players to remain with the organization rather than jumping to LIV Golf. But amid these alterations Monahan struck down rumors about one tour facet that won’t be changing.

In LIV Golf’s transformation from boardroom concept into a real, viable threat, there has been speculation that the tour would have to renounce its tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)6 structure to compete with the Saudi-backed circuit. Though that set-up facilitates a number of benefits—including saving millions of dollars in taxes—it simultaneously can confine what the tour can offer players and how it operates its business. The belief was by stripping its tax-exempt status and allowing for private investors and equity firms to come in, the tour could compete against LIV Golf’s unfathomably deep pockets.

However, when asked about the possibility, Monahan said such a scenario is not on the table.

“The 501(c)6 status and the integrity of that and all it does for us, that's always going to be a central fabric to who we are as an organization,” Monahan said. “It will always be that way.”

Monahan did note that the tour could allow for-profit subsidiaries to operate within the tour structure to create value for its members. Such an example was announced this week, with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy creating a new tech-driven exhibition series that will run on Mondays starting in 2024.

Conversely, Monahan asserted the non-profit framework is imperative to the tour’s mission.

“That status, if you think about our impact in the communities where we play, our history, our legacy, that's a point of differentiation for our sport,” Monahan said. “That's a point of differentiation for the tour, and that will continue to be that way.”

As for how the tour can financially compete with LIV Golf, Monahan said Wednesday’s announcements will only improve its existing product and ability to give back to local communities , two things that inherently make the tour a superior choice over their new rivals.

“When you're dealing with a non-economic actor, you have to come back to the core of who you are,” Monahan said, “and if the core of who you are is providing the single greatest competitive access and opportunities for players, and pipeline, then how do you make that stronger? And that's what everything starts with.”

Earlier this year, the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group made a deal worth up to $3 billion. Reports suggest that part of that money will be given to PGA Tour players as equity payments for their loyalty.

Some of the projected share numbers were released on Wednesday ahead of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans . Tiger Woods will reportedly receive upwards of $100 million, and Rory McIlroy will receive the second most, at $50 million.

With that information, McIlroy was asked for his thoughts.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy said Wednesday.

The PGA Tour will never be able to compete with LIV Golf and their seemingly endless amounts of money.

Nearly two-thirds of the infused money will be distributed through equity shares. A number of factors determined how much players would receive in shares.

Among the factors are ‘career points’ and how golfers have finished in the Player Impact Program (PIF). Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will allegedly receive $30 million each.

It seems McIlroy comprehends that no matter what kind of money is given out, there will still be guys tempted to leave for LIV Golf.

Earlier this month, a rumor suggested McIlroy was taking an $850 million deal to leave for LIV Golf. The four-time major winner quickly suppressed that allegation and said he would remain on the PGA Tour for the rest of his career.

This week, reports surfaced that McIlroy may also return to the PGA Tour Policy Board .

“I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months, and I was hopeful that there would be,” McIlroy said. “I think I could be helpful to the process, but only if people want me involved.”

Webb Simpson's resignation from his position sparked this chain of events. Under the circumstances, McIlroy would replace him.

The Northern Irishman expressed his interest in the seat if other people wanted him to take it.

“I feel like I can be helpful. I feel like I care a lot, and I have some pretty good experience and good connections within the game and sort of around the wider sort of ecosystem and everything that’s going on,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it’s not up to me to come back on the board. There’s a process that has to be followed.”

Nothing has been finalized regarding McIlroy's return, but there will be a vote to determine whether he will replace Simpson.

The 33-year-old has not always seen eye-to-eye with the LIV Golf players, but after he resigned from the board in 2023, a number of his opinions on the matter shifted. McIlroy has publicly voiced numerous times how the divide is hurting the sport. He feels unification is the only way forward for golf.

“We obviously realize the game is not unified right now for a reason, and there’s still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed, but I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together,” McIlroy said.

The PGA Tour has made multiple changes to its schedule in the last eight months and has gotten sponsors to add money where they could. Although more money is involved in professional golf than ever before, fewer people are watching.

Television ratings are down, and golf feels even more divided.

The end of April is quickly approaching, and there appears to be no movement on the PGA Tour’s deal with PIF. Their deadline for an agreement was initially set for the end of December, but they pushed it back to April. However, now all movement seems to have stalled.

With just over 40 days until the year mark of the June 6 announcement, will the PGA Tour and PIF find a way to make a deal and bring golf back together?

Viktor Hovland quells LIV rumors, rips PGA Tour leadership

Viktor Hovland said he completely understands why Jon Rahm signed with the LIV Golf League, but the world's No. 4-ranked player doesn't plan to be the next marquee player to bolt to the Saudi-backed league.

In an appearance on the "Fore" podcast in Norway, Hovland said he doubts he would move to LIV Golf, mostly because of the league's no-cut format. However, he acknowledged the enormous sum of money Rahm signed for -- reported to be more than $550 million including contract and signing bonuses -- while taking aim at the "arrogance" of the PGA Tour's leadership.

"It would be a bit too silly to criticize the players for leaving. After all, you only hear one angle in the media, and there are quite a few different parts happening at the same time here," Hovland said in Norwegian as translated by Eurosport Norway, per Golfweek. "I totally understand why he left. That's a lot, a lot of money."

Hovland's star status has taken off in 2023, highlighted by winning the FedEx Cup title in August and the $18 million bonus that came with it. He also won the Memorial and the second leg of the playoffs at the BMW Championship, and he tied for second at both the PGA Championship and the DP World Tour Championship.

It has been an immensely rewarding year for Hovland on the course, but his earnings would be dwarfed by a potential offer from LIV Golf. Hovland, 26, asserted that the format still does not appeal to him.

"I don't think their product is that great. I'm not such a fan of, for example, playing without a cut," Hovland said. "You need the competition with 150 players and a cut. If you don't play well enough, you're out. There is something about it that makes your game a little sharper. If I had gone to LIV, I don't think I would have become a better golfer. And then it is, in a way, end of discussion."

Hovland has committed to the season-opening The Sentry in Maui, which is a no-cut event, along with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the WM Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational.

Rahm had similarly strong objections to LIV Golf's format before he signed with the league. He has been suspended from the PGA Tour, preventing the Spanish golfer from playing in The Sentry ahead of LIV Golf's first event of 2024.

Hovland was also the latest to provide a blunt criticism of the PGA Tour's decision-makers.

There is a Dec. 31 deadline for the tour to finalize a deal with the Public Investment Fund. The framework agreement that also includes the DP World Tour was announced in June, to the surprise of the tour's members who were not involved in the closed-door discussions.

The secrecy of those talks generated significant anger from many players.

"The management has not done a good job. They almost see the players as labor, and not as part of the members. After all, we are the PGA Tour. Without the players, there is nothing," he said. "When you then get to see what happens behind closed doors, how the management actually makes decisions, which are not in the players' best interest, but best for themselves and what they think is best.

"They are not professional golfers after all. They are businessmen who say that 'No, it should look like this and that.' There is a great deal of arrogance behind it all."

Tiger Woods has since joined the policy board and is heavily involved in the ongoing discussions as the tour seeks investment for a new for-profit entity, PGA Tour Enterprises. ESPN reported that more than $3 billion would be injected by Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of billionaire U.S. sports team owners, into the new entity.

2024 NFL Draft trade rumors: Rams trying to make home run deal that would move them into top 10

The rams, who own 11 picks in this year's draft, are looking to make a splash in round 1.

For the first time in eight years, the Los Angeles Rams are expected to make a pick in the first round of the NFL Draft , and it's looking like they're going to try and make a big splash with that selection. 

The Rams, according to The Athletic , are trying to pull off a trade that would get them into the top 10. The Rams currently have the 19th overall pick, so it won't be easy to make that kind of move, but it's certainly not impossible. The Rams have 11 overall picks this year, which is tied for the most of any team in the draft, which means they have plenty of ammo to use in a potential trade. 

The Rams have a total of four picks in the top 100 with the 52nd pick, 83rd and 99th on top of the 19th overall pick. 

If the Rams are going to move up, that likely means they have their eye on a specific player, although it's not yet clear who that player might be. Based on their needs, it would certainly make sense for the Rams to draft a defensive tackle -- especially after the retirement of Aaron Donald -- which means they could be looking at Byron Murphy II. However, it's also worth noting that an offensive player could certainly be in play. 

Back on April 16, NFL Media's Peter Schrager reported that the Rams would almost certainly take an offensive player . 

"I'll go on record with something of a guarantee here: If the Rams do not trade back, you better believe Sean McVay's first-ever first-round selection will be an offensive player," Schrager wrote. 

If that's the case, the Rams could be looking to take receiver or an offensive tackle. If the Rams trade into the eighth ( Falcons ), ninth ( Bears ) or 10th spot ( Jets ), there's a good chance that one of the top three receivers -- Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze -- will still be available. On the other hand, the Rams could also be looking to take a tackle in the top 10, and if that's the case, they would put themselves in a position where they could take one of the top three tackles in the draft. 

Whatever the Rams do, they'll be doing it in style. For the fourth straight year, the team has taken over a beach house in Southern California to serve as its draft headquarters.

If the Rams don't trade out of the first round and they do end up making a first-round pick this year, it will mark the first time since 2016 that they've made a selection in the opening round. McVay was hired as the Rams coach in 2017, which means the team has never had a first-round pick under his watch, and because of that, it won't be surprising at all if he pushes for the team to take an offensive player whether they pick in the top 10 or stay at 19.
