After Friday’s sweltering heat, should the PGA Tour allow shorts? Pros’ answers may surprise you

It was a different kind of hot Friday in Memphis.

Getty Images

In case you haven’t heard yet, Friday’s second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship was hot, and we don’t just mean the scores.

The heat index (also known as “apparent temperature” or “real feel”) at TPC Southwind reached 111 degrees — the hottest round of the season. It was so hot, Harris English’s caddie had to be relieved after 11 holes.

“Ahhh, it’s not that bad,” Tommy Fleetwood said sarcastically before having a laugh and quickly correcting himself. “I’m only joking. It’s hot.”

Jordan Spieth said he was “humbled” by the sweltering conditions.

“It’s just a different kind of heat,” said Jordan Spieth. “It felt like it was just coming off the ground. Like you could just feel the water coming off the ground.”

Spieth said he’d likely bring a second shirt to change into at the turn Saturday when a heat advisory will still be in place in Memphis and heat indexes are again forecasted to reach into the low triple digits. However, the weather has prompted another question regarding the PGA Tour’s dress code: Should pros be allowed to wear shorts on the PGA Tour?

“Probably,” Fleetwood said. “You know, it might have been nice.”

That was only after he kind of threw playing partner Denny McCarthy under the bus.

“I’ve never seen trousers like Denny McCarthy’s today, he was sweating so much,” Fleetwood said. “He looked like he had just jumped in a pool.”

Fleetwood was the only pro who made an outright endorsement of wearing shorts on a day like Friday.

Jordan Spieth

‘What was I thinking?’ Jordan Spieth’s decision-making clouded by debilitating heat

In fact, Spieth even offered a reason against wearing them.

“Sure, if they gave us the option, I would have worn shorts, but I don’t think it would have made that much of a difference. You’d have just seen the sweat dripping down my legs instead of having dark pants on,” he said after a 68 that put him one off Lucas Glover’s 36-hole lead of 10 under. “My shirt made me weigh five more pounds today. I don’t think the pants added much to it.”

Tom Kim went viral for rolling up the cuffs on his pants Thursday but ended up wearing them normally on Friday. He said that was simply to keep his pants clean after he fell into the marsh earlier this season at the PGA Championship.

When asked if he thought about rolling his pants up again Friday because of the heat, Kim said he did, but didn’t pull the trigger because of the social media reaction to Thursday’s ensemble.

Shorts, of course, are somewhat of a controversial topic on the PGA Tour, and even more so in recent years.

Harris English

Extreme heat caused pro’s caddie to quit mid-round. Then, a spectator stepped in

Since the dawn of time — seemingly — the PGA Tour has had a moratorium on players wearing shorts in competition. The policy was altered slightly in 2019 — following the lead of the then-European Tour and PGA of America — to allow players to wear shorts during practice rounds.

The issue came back up last summer when LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman announced the ability for players to wear shorts during all rounds at LIV events.

And when the PGA Tour comes to muggy Memphis in the middle of one of the hottest global summers in recorded history, it’s again a hot topic (pun intended).

However, the players asked about it Friday were generally in agreement: shorts wouldn’t have made much of a difference.

“It’s not something— trousers, shorts. Just playing golf, it’s going to be hot either way,” Fleetwood said.

Millions in guaranteed contracts. Private jets. Swanky hotels. Caddies treated like royalty. It’s all attractive, sure. But the shorts ? How could LIV Golf leave out what might have been its most valuable recruiting tool of all?

CEO Greg Norman posted on LIV’s Twitter account on Friday that his golfers would be allowed to wear shorts during competition, starting with the second round on Saturday in the event outside of Boston.

We jest about the incentive, of course, but shorts have been a subject of debate for a number of years in men’s golf. Women have sported shorts in tournaments for decades, but they’ve been banned on the men’s side since, well, the days of Old Tom Morris.

PGA Tour players often wear shorts in practice rounds and pro-ams, but not on tournament days. For some, it has seemed like an archaic tradition, considering the swampy heat the players face at much of the nation’s summer tour venues. Caddies are spared and have been wearing shorts on tour since 1999. Why not their bosses? And Phil Mickelson has basically made a cottage industry over his muscular (yet hyped) calves.

Mickelson got to display them on Saturday and was among 19 of the 48 players to go bare-legged on a rather pleasant 78-degree September day in Bolton, Mass.

Bryson DeChambeau and Carlos Ortiz wore shorts during the second round of the LIV Golf Boston.

Jonathan Ferrey/LIV Golf

"I think this is a long time coming in the game of golf," Mickelson said after his round of two-under 68— only his second effort in the 60s since joining LIV . "I think it just takes a disruptor like LIV to get things done. ... I have a lot of friends on tour and I hope for their sake the tour follows. ... It feels good. It's more comfortable."

Mickelson was asked if he had influence on the decision. "I might have given input," he replied.

We at Golf Digest staged a debate about this very subject in May 2020—we were desperate for something to do during the pandemic shutdown—with writers E. Michael Johhson and Dan Rapaport facing off.

Rapaport argued for shorts, opining: “Virtually all of today’s tour players are athletes by any definition. They have fitness plans and nutrition regimens. Athletes wear shorts. It sounds simple, but try to think of another sport that requires its participants to wear pants. There aren’t any. Actually, cricket does. But there’s a reason we don’t play that one in America.”

Countered Johnson: “Well, for starters baseball players wear pants last I looked. Funny pants, but at least not shorts, which makes it, well, cricket, in my opinion. Fashion does evolve. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good thing (see: shirts, Ryder Cup, 1999 or pretty much anything John Daly wears). I mean, even Rickie Fowler was smart enough to realize those joggers and ridiculous shoes he was wearing were more fool-looking than cool-looking after a while.”

The debate raged on, but you get the idea.

So, it would seem as if the LIV vs. PGA Tour rivalry has one more wrinkle. What say you, Tiger and Rory?

Peter Oosterhuis, British golfer who blazed path in America, dies at 75

Mr. Oosterhuis was among the first Europeans to play full-time on the PGA Tour and later became a longtime commentator on CBS.

Peter Oosterhuis, a British golfer with a 6-foot-5 frame and an elegant compact swing, who became one of the first Europeans to compete full-time on the PGA Tour in the 1970s, and who later found a second career as a longtime golf commentator on CBS, died May 2 at age 75.

PGA officials announced the death in a statement but gave no further details. Mr. Oosterhuis, who lived in Charlotte, retired from broadcasting in 2014 because of early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

For nearly two decades, Mr. Oosterhuis (which he pronounced OH-ster-house) was one of golf’s most distinctive players on both sides of the Atlantic. He blasted towering fairway drives, swinging extra-long clubs to accommodate his height. With his short game — folding himself over his wedges and putters — he showed a finesse and deft touch that often left spectators roaring.

In his lone PGA Tour victory , at the Canadian Open in 1981, he chipped a perfect shot from the sand on the final hole and then knocked in a one-foot putt, giving him a single-stroke win over three runners-up including Jack Nicklaus , who had designed the course.

“You’ve been very patient, Peter, and now you’ve won one,” Nicklaus told him.

“I don’t know if I’ve been patient or just stubborn,” replied Mr. Oosterhuis, who was widely known as “Oosty.”

Just his presence on the PGA Tour was something of a novelty. His decision in 1975 to compete fully on the PGA circuit made him one of the first Europeans on the tour, and helped show the possibilities to other international players at a time when the PGA carried the biggest prize money and prestige.

“I came over to the States and I think maybe I was just happy that I was on the PGA Tour,” he told Golf magazine. “At that time, it was an achievement.”

Even before his PGA years, Mr. Oosterhuis had made a mark on the sport. He was among the dominant golfers on the newly formed European Tour, winning back-to-back Open de France titles in 1973 and 1974, a year he also won the Italian Open. At Britain’s Open Championship in 1974, he was runner-up, four strokes behind South Africa’s Gary Player.

His most-watched moment during that run came in the United States. At the 1973 Masters, Mr. Oosterhuis stunned the field and fans. After 54 holes, he had a three-stroke lead at Augusta National Golf Club with shots that included a dazzling 60-foot putt for an eagle.

“Nervous?” someone asked Mr. Oosterhuis as he headed for the fourth and final round.

“Yes,” he replied.

The previous night, he forgot to tell the hotel to block his calls. A friend in Britain phoned at 3:45 a.m. to wish him luck. He said he couldn’t fall back asleep for an hour.

From the first hole, the lead Mr. Oosterhuis had built was chipped away. Nicklaus and American Tommy Aaron were surging. By the 10th tee, Mr. Oosterhuis had surrendered the lead to Aaron and J.C. Snead, the nephew of golfing great Sam Snead . Still, Mr. Oosterhuis was just a stroke back. A steady push to the finish could keep him in contention.

On the 520-yard 15th, Mr. Oosterhuis misplayed the drive, forcing him to take an extra shot to reach the green. Then his putting, normally a reliable part of his game, failed him. He missed a 10-footer for a bogey, his fourth of the round. He could not recover.

Aaron finished at a four-under 283 for his first and only Masters victory. Snead was second at 284; Mr. Oosterhuis was third at 285 along with Nicklaus and Jim Jamieson.

“I played a scrappy round,” Mr. Oosterhuis recounted , “but didn’t play particularly well.”

Mr. Oosterhuis retired from professional play in 1986 and turned his golf knowledge — along with his self-effacing wit — into a broadcast career. He worked for Britain’s Sky Sports and the Golf Channel before debuting for CBS Sports in 1998. For the next 16 years, he was part of the network’s golf coverage team.

At the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Mr. Oosterhuis and his colleagues noticed that his memory and usually prodigious attention to detail appeared to be slipping. “When an [obsessive-compulsive disorder] person can’t obsess the way he used to,” he recalled, “he starts to obsess about his inability to obsess.” He later received a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s disease, and announced he was stepping down.

In a 2015 interview, he was asked if he had moments of anger over his inability to continue broadcasting. He joked that he never gets angry. Then he added a caveat. “Maybe once,” he said, “when I missed a few short putts.”

‘Thinking globally’

Peter Arthur Oosterhuis was born May 3, 1948, in London. His father, who had fled the Netherlands during World War II, was a commodities broker for coffee and other products. His mother was a homemaker who was a low-handicap golfer.

As a boy, he was permitted on the grounds of a golf club , Dulwich and Sydenham Hill, to pick blackberries. “I used to eat all the blackberries I picked,” he said , “so I was soon dismissed from that and I started to play golf instead.” Within a few years, he was winning junior tournaments.

He represented Britain in amateur international play in 1967 and 1968 before turning professional. He finished sixth at Britain’s 1970 Open Championship, where Nicklaus defeated fellow American Doug Sanders in a playoff. (In 1982, Mr. Oosterhuis narrowly missed again at the Open, finishing a stroke behind Tom Watson .)

From 1971 to 1974, Mr. Oosterhuis held the No. 1 ranking in Europe. As part of Ryder Cup competition — U.S. teams vs. Europeans — his one-on-one record during the 1970s included twice beating Arnold Palmer .

Mr. Oosterhuis said his move to the PGA Tour was inspired by countryman Tony Jacklin, who had been taking part in American competitions since the late 1960s. “After Tony I was really the only guy in Europe thinking globally,” he once said. “I made the effort to go over, and I proved to myself that I could compete.”

After leaving the professional circuit, Mr. Oosterhuis was golf director at country clubs in New Jersey and outside Los Angeles before returning to Britain for the broadcast job with Sky. He also contributed golf commentary for the BBC.

In his golf bag, he always kept a copy of National Geographic’s “Complete Birds of the World” to help identify new species that he spotted while playing. He tallied about 500 over his career.

His marriage to Anne Coney ended in divorce. In 1993, he married Ruth Ann Pittluck. Besides his wife, survivors include two sons from his first marriage; two stepsons; and four grandchildren.

During a 1973 Ryder Cup match in Scotland, America’s Lee Trevino announced that he would kiss his teammates in the rear if he lost to Mr. Oosterhuis. They tied. Even so, the American team waited for Trevino in the locker room with their pants lowered as a joke.

“I didn’t know about that until years later,” Mr. Oosterhuis recalled. “I guess I should take it as a compliment that I must have played well enough to get Lee Trevino’s attention.”

Taylor pendrith gets 1st pga tour win at byron nelson after final-hole collapse from ben kohles.

MCKINNEY, Texas – Taylor Pendrith tried his best to ignore Ben Kohles’ final-hole meltdown , focusing on the eagle putt that the Canadian thought he might have to make even to force a playoff as he walked toward the 18th green.

Several stunning minutes later, a 3-footer for birdie gave Pendrith his first PGA Tour victory.

Recommended Videos

Kohles overtook Pendrith with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 for a one-shot lead, then bogeyed the 18th after hitting his second shot into greenside rough. Already in shock following two chips from the rough — the second with his feet in a bunker — Kohles missed a 6-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

“Wasn’t really trying to pay attention to what they were doing, although it really mattered, obviously,” Pendrith said. “I feel for Ben. He played really, really good today, especially down the stretch. I’ve been on the other side of it a couple times, and it sucks. But it’s golf. It’s a hard game.”

Pendrith shot 4-under 67 for a 23-under 261 total at the TPC Craig Ranch. The 32-year-old won in his 74th career PGA Tour start.

Playing just north of his birthplace of Dallas, Kohles shot 66 to finish a stroke back. The 34-year-old who plays out of North Carolina is winless in 68 starts.

“Honestly, hadn’t seen any rough like that all week,” said Kohles, who moved to North Carolina when he was 10. “Just needed a little bit more umph on it. Did so many good things this week, and I’m just going to keep reminding myself of that and try to get myself back in this position.”

Alex Noren, a Swedish player also seeking a first PGA Tour victory, was another stroke back. He wowed the crowd on the stadium hole at the par-3 17th with a tee shot to 2 1/2 feet, but followed that birdie with a par knowing he probably needed an eagle on 18. Noren shot 65 and was alone in third at 21 under.

Aaron Rai and first-round leader Matt Wallace of England were at 20 under along with the South Korean pair of S.H. Kim and Byeong Hun An. Rai and Kim shot 64, An 65 and Wallace 68.

Pendrith, the third-round leader, and Kohles were separated by just one shot or tied most of the day. After Kohles made a 20-footer to take the lead on 17, Pendrith's par putt rolled all the way around the cup and went in.

“It just curled in, that putt on the last second there, which was unreal just to give me a chance,” said Pendrith, who set it up with a chip from an awkward stance with his heels hanging over the lip of a bunker, after saving par with another testy putt at the par-4 16th.

The victory qualified Pendrith for the PGA Championship in two weeks and next year's Masters. He's also in the next three $20 million signature events, starting next week with the Wells Fargo championship. Kohles and Noren also played their way into Wells Fargo with their Nelson showings.

With Wells Fargo and the PGA coming in the next two weeks, just three of the top 30 in the world ranking were in the field.

Jordan Spieth, the highest at No. 20, missed the cut for just the second time in 12 appearances at his hometown event. Defending champion Jason Day (22nd) and Tom Kim (23rd) didn’t contend, with Day finishing one shot behind Kim at 9 under.

Jake Knapp, the second-round leader who three years ago was working as a security guard in his home state of California, shot 70 to finish at 19 under. Knapp and Wallace were the only players in the top eight with a previous PGA Tour win.

The start of the final round was pushed back 2 1/2 hours because of overnight rain, and pairings turned into threesomes going off both tees with the players allowed to lift, clean and place shots in the fairway.

Wallace appeared to start a charge by chipping in for birdie at 12, the toughest hole of the week, and getting another birdie at the par-4 13th. A three-putt bogey on the par-3 15th stalled him out.

Rafael Campos, a 13-year journeyman from Puerto Rico who has spent most of his career on satellite tours, birdied five of the first six holes starting on the back nine to make the turn at 29.

The 36-year-old cooled off on his second nine before making a 48-foot putt from off the green for eagle on the par-5 ninth for a 63 that put him at 18 under.

Taiga Semikawa, a 23-year-old from Japan playing on a sponsor exemption, also finished at 18 after a 64.

Kris Kim, a 16-year old amateur making his PGA Tour debut, had a rough finish as the youngest to play a final round on tour in 10 years.

Playing his final nine on the front, the son of South Korean-born former LPGA Tour player Ji-Hyun Suh had four bogeys and shot 73 to finish 6 under.

Kim, who is from England, played on a sponsor exemption from the South Korean company and tournament title sponsor CJ Group.
