Renting A Scooter in Phuket Thailand (Everything You Need To Know)

Who doesn’t want total freedom to travel around a beautiful island? Should you rent a scooter in Phuket? YES! You should absolutely rent a scooter in Phuket and prepare for a unique adventure on a busy island.

There are always a few key things from each adventure that sticks out in my mind when I’m on the road and in Phuket, Thailand one not to forget was our own scooter adventures.  It certainly was not my Harley but it worked!

Renting a scooter was easy, we rented one right from our hostel. All they needed was our passports and some cash.  We thought ahead and went to AAA before we left to get our International Drivers License.

They didn’t ask us for them but did take down the information from them when we volunteered them.  For us a helmet was a must, I’m funny enough without hitting my head on the streets of Thailand.

Our scooter was an Automatic so it was easy to work, just give it gas and go! We will call it the little red Honda. Have you ever driven in 5-6 wide lines of bikes but the real lines are only a car wide? Well, that is what it is like.

Going down streets, hills and curves were fun. You just kind of flow with traffic, so if there’s a car stopped in the street you go around it, you may go around it on the sidewalk or shoulder but you just follow all of the other bikes whizzing in and out of traffic.

Yes, it’s kind of crazy, but everyone is nice and watches out for each other. But don’t expect Thai drivers to be driving with the same respect for the driving rules as most drivers in your country do- they have their own set of rules!

That includes going through red lights if no one is coming and driving on the wrong side of the road! As far as the road conditions, they were well paved and smooth so even an inexperienced biker will be able to rent one and have fun.

Read reviews and check prices with our Hotel Search Engine , that gives you the best hotel deals found on the web. Our search engine pulls results from all of the major booking places, including Expedia, Hotels, Booking and more. All the options, all the deals, all in one place and just for you.

People will be honking horns like crazy.  Some just to say hey I’m turning or watch out don’t you see me or hey pretty lady or you’re going to slow! No matter what, just don’t let it get to you, honk back if you want! It’s all part of the culture.

The day we rented our little red Honda we took it beach hopping along the West and South sides of Phuket. From Patong to Kata & Karon was about a 20-minute drive.

Most of the drive is outside of the city and you can enjoy a beautiful jungle landscape and some pretty awesome views of the coast from the higher overlook spots. You just kind of go at your own pace and take it however it comes at you.

Keep your eye out for people running across the street. We saw one bike that had almost flipped over because someone ran right out in front of them!

~ Tequila or Gas? You decide. ~

We filled up at one of the street stations near the hostel and never had to stop for gas again. They don’t have traditional gas stations so you will see people on the streets with liquor bottles in baskets. This is your gas station!

The rates are fair and they are happy to fill you up.  At first, we thought maybe they were tequila or something like that. One day will only use a tank of gas and there are tons you can see.

We did do our fair share of walking, but we enjoy that. We either walked or rented a scooter. Don’t hesitate to rent one, get out there and have your scooter adventure today.

I don’t think renting scooter is that safe in phuket. I rented a scooter and paid 5000 bhatt as security deposit but while returning the scooter , the shopkeeper did not pay me back my 5000 bhatt. He started fighting and speaking abusive language. So I would suggest do not trust these locals and avoid renting scooter and paying any deposit. Never give your passport at any cost as security deposit while renting anything. The police over here is not at all helpful. We tried contacting the police but no good response.

Is it a problem with police if I drive with my 6 yrs old daughter ? And with safety?

Well, it won’t be a problem with the police – we have seen up to 6 people on a scooter before in Thailand! Safety is entirely dependent on where you are driving and what kind of a driver you are. If you have experience and your 6yo knows how to be a good rider, then I would guess you’d be fine but I can’t really say. It’s up to you to make that judgement. Enjoy Thailand!

I’m headed to Phuket in a few weeks but you don’t mention the cost of this 🙁

Hi Brandon, the price will definitely vary depending on where you rent the bike but it is still affordable. A full day rental is around 200-250THB for a daily rental plus whatever you spend in gas. Have fun!

Going in Dec and can’t wait to scoot around, staying at Centara Karon Resort, any suggestions ofor a reputable dealer close by? Appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Vince, Nada. Your hotel will probably have a couple to rent. If not, you can ask them for recommendations. Cheers and enjoy Phuket!

I am thinking of getting a scooter for my next trip in Phuket next month…. but the fact is I just tried driving it one time in Phuket (the uphill road at the north side of Patong beach) and I even did not have a proper license!!

If I am going to get a scooter, I will properly head to south side (Phromthep Cape, Big Buddha). Should I take the risk of having the freedom of travelling or just hire a driver to get in these places ?

Leo, take the risk and have the freedom. It’s easy to get around with a scooter, Yes it gets busy and it can be nuts. However, everyone is nice and will point you on your way if your lost or they will stop and help if you’re having issues. Head South and have a killer scooter adventure! I want to hear about it when you get back! Travel On!

Yes! I always rent scooters wherever I go (or bicycles if I’m feeling sporty…so aka never) and I’ve never had any problems. It gives you so much more freedom to go where you want and explore at your own pace.

Awesome read. We going again for the 3rd time and will definitely rent again. You miss out on allot if you don’t! !

Same here, we love renting scooters and buzzing around away from the tourist trail.

Thank you for the advice. Scootering around is such a fun way to visit a new place. I’ll make note of this for our trip to Phuket!

I dont have experience of riding motor bikes. However, I drive in a city which has the same traffic conventions like Phuket. So I am a lil hesitant in getting one of these automatic scooties during my planned visit in January. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, if you have no experience driving motorbikes or motorcycles then I would not recommend it. It is different than driving a car and in the traffic you will be presented with, not a great place to learn. Maybe try it a few times at home before you make a decision. Cheers!

Great post! Looks like it would be fun! We’re planning on going to Phuket in March 2015 and this is one of those questions that we’ve been asking ourselves. As an ex motorcyclist I’m a bit scared, but I’m sure we’ll be ok!

Yea you will be fine. It is a little hectic but nothing that someone with some experience can’t handle. You’ll have a great time.

Rent a scooter on Phuket – my experiences & tips

by Sascha Tegtmeyer

A scooter on Phuket is a piece of freedom on your Thailand vacation. You can move around flexibly and see the most beautiful places on the island, go to the food market or to the beach. What do you have to consider when riding a scooter on Phuket? And which rental companies are well rated? In my experience report with helpful tips, I give you all the information you need before your scooter tour.

Now fantastic trip to Phuket Book cheaply with HolidayCheck !*

I can still clearly remember my first tour on the scooter. I have the vehicle in Rawai Phuket Rented from a shabby little roadside rental shop. It was my first ever scooter ride. Although I am a passionate driver, I have never ridden a scooter before. And so I got a crash course from the Thai rental owner.

Ich hatte echt viel Spaß beim Roller fahren auf Phuket. Das verleiht dem Urlaub einen Hauch von Abenteuer. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Now you basically know how scooter rental on Phuket works. You go to the store, fill out a form, get a copy of your ID, put on a helmet and drive off. Sounds simple and almost too good to be true.

Riding a scooter on Phuket is a lot of fun

And that's it. As long as everything goes well, riding a scooter is in Thailand incredibly fun. You can discover everything, you are flexible and when riding a scooter, the journey is actually the destination. Riding a scooter gives you a feeling of freedom and independence. Plus, you're much closer to the action than in a car.

Selbst ist der Mann – getankt werden muss der Motorroller natürlich auch. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

When you drive past something interesting, you just stop and take a closer look. However, riding a scooter on Phuket also has its downsides - and they can be significant. I will explain to you a little further down in the article what you absolutely need to keep in mind when traveling on a two-wheeler. You can also find important information about renting a scooter at TripAdvisor and HolidayCheck *.

My experiences with the scooter on Phuket

I've rented a scooter on Phuket a dozen times now and toured the island unsafely. As already said, it's not only a lot of fun, but also mobile for just a few euros. The scooters go much faster than in Germany.

Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The smallest scooters go a little faster than in Germany , you get to 50 to 60 km/h - the top speed is even 80 km/h. You can drive practically across the entire island in an hour and a half. And it only takes that long because the traffic light is always red and you're stuck in traffic somewhere.

You can easily explore everything

Nevertheless, you can get from the extreme south to the extreme north in a maximum of one and a half hours. So you can explore the whole of Phuket - and if you dare, you can also drive to the mainland via Sarasin Bridge. In a week I covered all the important sights and of course the most beautiful beaches on the island with the scooter - only to come to the conclusion that the most beautiful place is in the very south of Phuket at Cape Krating.

Überall Roller – wer nach Phuket kommt, leiht sich fürgewöhnlich einen Roller aus. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Take good care of yourself and your vehicle

You should definitely pay attention when renting your scooter in Phuket. On the one hand, make sure that you take out the most insurance coverage when renting. Secondly, when I rent the scooter, I take a close look at the scooter and take photos of places that catch my eye. Thirdly, you have to be aware that the smallest scooters are even 125CC. You are not allowed to drive with a normal German driving license.

Der Verkehr ist insbesondere im Bereich von Phuket Stadt völlig irre – du kommst nicht einmal mit dem Roller besonders schnell voran, sondern musst ewig an jeder Ampel warten. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

In Thailand it is generally tolerated. But if you have an accident, you definitely can't be sure that insurance will pay out if you drove without a proper license. The risk is always present when riding a scooter on Phuket. You would need a full motorcycle license in order to be able to drive with full insurance.

I would drive accordingly carefully so that an accident doesn't occur in the first place. If you pay careful attention to your vehicle, you can not only explore the island comfortably, but also have a lot of fun driving. The roads are generally well developed. There are several north-south connections and also cross connections on Phuket, so that in principle you can get from one place on the island to another relatively quickly.

Du kannst dir auch ein Auto mieten oder Taxi fahren auf Phuket – aber das ist längst nicht so flexibel und abenteuerlich wie der Motorroller. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Renting a car on Phuket is an alternative?

Experience has shown that driving on the island is a bit strenuous, especially at peak times and in the Phuket City area. The traffic jams there are hellish and you can hardly make any progress even with a scooter. If you drive by car, the traffic is sometimes hellish and you'll be stuck in a traffic jam for ages. That's why the scooter is the first choice for exploring all the sights.

Rent a scooter on Phuket – my tips

Below I have put together some extremely important tips for you if you want to rent a scooter on Phuket and ride it. In particular, you should definitely pay attention to the safety instructions for your scooter tour.

One of the most important tips is definitely insurance, which I wouldn't compromise on if I were you. Basically, I would recommend that you drive extremely carefully so as not to get into trouble in the first place. Below I have listed my most important tips for riding a scooter on Phuket.

1. Driving license and international driving license

As I just explained, the smallest scooters in Thailand are already 125CC. You are not allowed to drive this with your normal German class M driving license. In Thailand you officially need an international driver's license along with your national driver's license to drive a motorcycle or scooter. Some landlords could still rent you a scooter without this proof. You can't be sure that your insurance coverage will apply if you rent a scooter for which you don't have a driver's license. Therefore, be extremely careful.

But you can get fines at police checks if you don't have an international driver's license. However, I know from my own experience that the police also tolerate driving without an international driving license. But this is very unofficial.

2. Wearing a helmet is mandatory

In Thailand, wearing a helmet while riding a scooter is required by law. Make sure the rental company provides you with a helmet. The obligation is all well and good - but due to the traffic situation on Phuket, you are strongly advised to wear a helmet for your safety.

3. Check insurance coverage

Check whether insurance is included in the rental price and what it covers. It is advisable to have as extensive insurance as possible to cover damage to the scooter and any medical costs that may arise. Keep in mind that insurance coverage may not apply if you ride a scooter that your license does not allow you to drive.

4. Condition of the scooter

Check the condition of the scooter before renting. Take a look at the scooter accompanied by the landlord and talk to him about any damage. If in doubt, you can take a short test drive and see if everything works. Take photos of any damage in advance so that there are no problems with the return.

5. Traffic rules and driving behavior

Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules. Traffic in Thailand can be very different from what you are used to and requires special attention and caution. For example, you have left-hand traffic like in Great Britain. This can cause some confusion at first.

6. Contract and Deposit

Read the rental agreement carefully and make sure you understand all of the terms and conditions. A deposit is often required, the amount of which and return conditions you should be aware of.

7. Awareness of the surroundings

Phuket can be busy, especially in high season. Use caution when navigating heavy traffic and unfamiliar road conditions. There are numerous fatal accidents, especially in the high season - often involving holidaymakers. You should definitely be aware of this and drive with caution.

8. Avoid drinking and driving at all costs

Avoid alcohol if you plan to ride a scooter. Alcohol limits are strict and the police carry out regular checks. I have already come under such control myself. The officials are not to be trifled with - this cannot be compared to an inspection in Germany.

Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Scooter provider on Phuket

You will find more than enough suppliers of scooters locally. You don't necessarily need to book a scooter before your trip. But you might want to take a look at what options you have, so I've picked out two scooter providers on Phuket for you.

Rent a scooter or car on Phuket?

You need strong nerves to drive on Phuket

Only very experienced drivers with strong nerves should rent a car. Renting a car on Phuket is only recommended for experienced drivers who are not put off by the chaotic traffic. Unfortunately, I had bad luck with a well-known German car rental company who canceled the car I had reserved at short notice.

That was very annoying because I'm used to exploring the surrounding area by car. But maybe it was also a stroke of luck, because I rented a scooter instead and drove the whole island unsafe.

Das Auto ist umzingelt von Rollern – und jetzt stell dir vor, du musst auf Phuket unter diesen Bedingungen fahren. Traust du dir das zu? Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Move forward quickly and flexibly

With the scooter you can get from one place to another quickly and flexibly. Most scooters reach speeds of 50 to 60 km/h, some even up to 80 km/h. The island is not very big, you can cross it from south to north in an hour and a half.

I visited all the main attractions and the most beautiful beaches in one week and had a lot of fun. In the end, I decided that I like the south of Phuket best, especially Cape Krating with its fantastic views.

Vacationing on Phuket is much more fun with a scooter

My conclusion

Let me be clear: if you rent a scooter in Phuket, you will have a lot more fun on vacation. If you have to take a taxi or walk every time instead, you won't be as mobile or flexible and won't be able to visit the most beautiful places on the island as easily. Or just go for a quick meal in the evening. Renting a scooter is therefore extremely important. However, you should be aware of the dangers: If you have a normal German class M driving license, you are not allowed to drive most scooters on Phuket.

Ich habe mir auf Phuket schon häufig einen Roller ausgeliehen – und toi, toi, toi, bisher ging alles gut. Foto: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The landlord will most likely still lend you the scooter. Problems can only arise when there is a potential accident. Then it could happen that the insurance cover does not apply. You should definitely be aware of this risk and drive with extreme caution.

  • Mark Borland ★★★★★ in the last week Just finished my 3rd tour with BBT and although Covid travel could have made it difficult this was not the case. With up to date guidance from BBT they informed me on the importance of quick application for my Thai Pass with QR code so I knew I was good to go on this amazing trip. (Very Important!) … More BKK airport was well organised and with our PCR tests completed enroute to the hotel we were good to go. Our road captain this trip was Noah with Yai following in our support vehicle ensuring the bikes were checked daily and our luggage was available normally minutes after we arrive at each stop. The benefits of travelling to this biking heaven are too many to mention as the roads have everything you could ask for from fast sweeping bends to technical curves on the mountain passes. With the guidance of Noah everyone riding finds their own pace in the warm dry weather. Stopping to take in the best views along with sites of interest like the Tham Luang Cave where the Wild Boar football team were rescued it’s a very informative trip. Not only is it biking heaven but with BBT looking after your meals every plate that arrived made it feel like a food tour. We ate along with the locals as well as carefully selected restaurants. Khao Soi being my favourite dish of Northern Thailand. The hotels on this trip were immaculate with the staff being attentive, each rider in their own room and a cold beer waiting on you. Travel may have changed with Covid but BBT are still leading by example and giving exactly what they say they will. “ A BIKE TOUR THAT MADE ME THINK ABOUT NOTHING EXCEPT THE NEXT CORNER ! “ I will definitely be back. True Bikers Tour Booked for 8th January 2024 See you then guys !!!
  • John Mills ★★★★★ a week ago If you’re thinking of doing a motorcycle tour in Asia then don’t hesitate to book with Big Bike Tours, from the first email that I sent to the end of the tour no detail was missed. Communication- every email and question was answered promptly and clearly. Pick up- even though I changed flights last minute … More and showed up 12 hours earlier they were at the airport with a sign and a smile. Pretour meeting - clear and informative, have is a chance to meet the others in the group, well executed and the tshirt is very cool! Tour- this is where I can’t say enough, Chao our tour guide and Tom the support vehicle driver and mechanic where simply amazing, attending to our every need, constant information on what’s to come, we chose Laos which was a very challenging ride, yet so much fun. Everyone in the group became friends, including Chao and Tom. After tour - great communication, a few beers and a thank you email from Kay. Simply perfect, and the bikes are very well maintained with Tom giving them a check every evening while you enjoy the perfect dinners and great friends.
  • Mark Wood ★★★★★ a week ago Myself & my wife did the 10 day " amazing Thailand tour " we didn't know what to expect but what an experience, every thing was organised well, even down to the water handed out on the stops by the lovely Siam, the hotels & food were all fantastic, all you have to think about is … More the riding, the riding was fast paced & some parts challenging but you are told to go at your own pace. I would recommend Big Bike Tours, thanks Noah for a great tour.

Scooter and Bike Rentals in Phuket

Where to rent a scooter or a bike in Phuket?

Renting a bike in Phuket (or a scooter) is extremely easy, and as soon as you arrive, you will notice bike rental shops and roadside rentals are everywhere in the tourist areas of Phuket. Still, you should know a few important things before you rent.

Note that a bike in Thailand refers to a scooter, usually a Honda or a Suzuki, between 110 and 150 CCs. You can rent big bikes in specialized shops if you want to, but it comes with higher prices and bigger risks because with great power comes great responsibilities.

Don’t expect to find bicycle rentals to go around the island: it’s considered too dangerous because they are slow and are in the way of fast bikes and even cars. The only places you can find mountain bikes are tour agencies specializing in defined itineraries, usually safe and scenic.

This space is available to place your Shop! Click here to contact us and see the options

Things to know before you rent a bike:

  • In theory, you need an international driving license to ride a bike, but any shop will agree to rent you any bike with your country’s driving license. Most people do, and everything is fine until you get involved in a serious accident. You will not be covered properly without an international driving licence, and your holiday can become a nightmare. So check early in your country; it might not be that difficult.
  • You can purchase a small extra coverage in case of a minor accident; that’s good peace of mind.
  • You will need to present a passport at the rental shop, but never leave the passport, only a copy .
  • Check the bike for scratches before leaving , and take photos if you spot any damage. It’s not a big risk, but it won’t take long and better safe than sorry.
  • Make sure you understand that driving in Thailand is quite different from driving in your country, and this is for many reasons: locals bend the rules a lot! They keep going through the red lights for several seconds; they can drive on the wrong side of the road to reach their destination faster, and they can drive fast and without helmets. But it doesn’t stop here: tourists are often a problem: they have poor control of their bikes as they have very little experience, the roads can be slippery with sand and have poor signage at night. Most of all, Phuket is a party island, and people tend to drink and drive more than in many countries, both locals and tourists alike.
  • There are police checkpoints here and there. They usually check for your helmet and driving licence. If you don’t have one of these two, you may be fined 500 baht. This fine is often payable on the spot, and you will be given a receipt allowing you to keep driving for several days, which is convenient. They also estimate if you have had too many drinks; if you did, you might have to go through a breathalyzer test.
  • Ideally, renting a bike from a shop seems better than in the street; it just seems safer. Look at the overall condition of the bikes to give you an idea of the shop level.

Should I Rent a Scooter in Phuket

Are you wondering should you rent a scooter in Phuket? Well, let me tell you about my trip to Phuket in October.

I decided to hire a scooter for a few days, so that I was able to go wherever I wanted. Boy, was it an adventure! The roads in Phuket are not at all what I’m used to at home. They’re much trickier to navigate, especially if you’re not used to this level of chaos on the roads.

I found myself coming off the scooter a few times, luckily it was nothing serious, but enough to make me think twice. Driving in Phuket requires a completely different mindset. It’s not just about knowing the road rules; it’s about adapting to a whole new way of getting around. It really is organised chaos and at times hard to work out!

Wat Chlong in Phuket

So, should you rent a scooter in Phuket? Well, it depends. If you’re up for an adventure and are aware of the high potential of risk, go for it. But if you’re like me and prefer to leave the driving to the locals, maybe stick to Grab (the Uber alternative in Thailand). After my little accident, I decided to return the scooter and hire locals to take me around instead.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend hiring a scooter in Phuket as a tourist, but if you’re set on it, I won’t try convince you either way but I’ll help to provide some information so that you’re able to make an informed decision, based on my personal experience with scooter rental in Phuket.

Should You Rent a Scooter in Phuket?

Renting a scooter in Phuket is pretty popular way of getting and is pretty cheap, there are a lot of upsides and a lot of downsides.

It allows you to be able to explore the island without being tied to public transport schedules or joining a tour . However, I will stress that safety should be a significant concern, especially for people who are unfamiliar with riding scooters or the local “organised chaos” that they call traffic conditions.

Make sure to check your travel insurance coverages as some companies may not cover motorbike accidents, bike damage or you may be required to pay extra to cover motorbike riding . Keep in mind that you are also required to have the correct licensing to be fully covered by insurance.

How to Rent a Scooter in Phuket

To rent a scooter in Phuket, start by finding a reputable rental shop. There are plenty around the island, offering various models at different prices.

I would highly recommend that you inspect the scooter before renting (really really well!), make sure that the brakes, lights, tires, and engine are all working. You should also take photos of the bike before you leave the rental, include any exisiting damage and make sure to point this out on your paperwork.

It is a requirement to have a valid international driving license (IDL or IDP) and the shop may require a deposit to be paid, which will be returned at the end of the rental period. Make sure that you actually read the rental agreement’s terms and conditions, pay attention to the rental period, additional charges, and insurance coverage.

Here are a few suggestions for decent rental shops:

  • Phuket Scooter Rental
  • Som Motorbike Rental Phuket (this is who I hired from)
  • Phuket Motorbike Rentals

Cost of Scooter Rental in Phuket

The cost of renting a scooter varies based on the model and how long you want to rent one for. Prices can start from as low as 150 THB (approx $7 usd) per day to around 280-350 THB (approx $7.80-$9.70 usd) per day for more models like the Honda PCX or Yamaha Aerox. You may also receive a discount for longer rentals.

I hired a Yamaha scooter (no idea the model, I didn’t really pay attention) for 250 THB per day. Originally I hired it for a week but after coming off, I decided to return it after 2 days. Driving in Phuket is seriously no joke.

Is It Safe to Rent a Scooter in Phuket?

While renting a scooter offers you the freedom to explore Phuket at your own pace, safety concerns cannot and should not be overlooked. Traffic in Phuket is chaotic, road conditions can be really bad in some spots and drivers (tourists in particular) can be extremely unpredictable.

You have experience driving a scooter or motorbike, have the ability to drive defensively, wear a helmet, and have the appropriate license and insurance. Even with this, it doesn’t mean it will stop you from being in involved in an accident.

A Phuket news site reported that within a 2 month period in 2023, there were over 500 accidents reported in Phuket involving tourists. While the WHO reports that each day in Thailand there 60 people die, 2,500 are injured, 500 are seriously injured and 20 become disabled.

With these statistics, it’s easy to see how dangerous driving in Phuket (and Thailand) can be. You could not only end up hurting yourself but you could face hurting or killing someone else on the roads – a good way to put a damper on your dream holiday!

Dealing with the Police in Phuket

If you get stopped by the police, make sure to stay calm, be respectful and follow their instructions. Always travel with the required documents (your license(s), insurance, and green book), be fully clothed and always wear a helmet. And for goodness sake, do not offer the police a bribe – that’s the quickest way to land yourself in a lot of trouble.

Please note: even if you have an International Drivers Permit, you may still have to pay a fine if you are found riding a motorcycle. This is especially true, if your foreign driver’s licence does not specifically state that you are allowed ride a motorbike. If you receive a fine, make sure to get a receipt.

The police in Phuket may not outwardly admit it, but they tend to target tourists on motorbikes and for good reason (this is my personal opinion based one my observations). With the above mentioned statistics of road accidents involving tourists, the Phuket police obviously want to make sure people are correctly licensed, insured and driving safely. This reddit post offers some great advice for people stopped by police in Phuket.

Renting a Scooter in Phuket Without a License

Renting a scooter without a valid driving license is possible at some “dodgy” shops but I would not recommended doing this. Not only is it illegal to drive without a license in Thailand, by doing so, you will more than likely result in fines or more severe consequences.

This is especially true is you are involved in an accident. Most reputable rental shops require a valid license (from your home country showing you are licensed for a motorbike & the IDP) for the rental process, if they don’t, then move on to another store.

Beware of Scooter Scams in Phuket

When renting a scooter in Phuket, you should be aware that there are “scooter scams”. One of the most common scam involves scooter rental companies charging you for pre-existing damage when the scooter is returned to them after you have used it. Make sure that you thoroughly inspect the scooter in front of the staff as well as taking plenty of photos (and/or video) of the scooter before you leave.

Another common scam you will find in Phuket is that the shops will expect you to pay exorbitant fees for minor damage to the bike. This is more likely to come from shops that are less ethical (dodgy), so I’d recommend doing your research on the best rental companies and go with one that has good reviews.

Another scam I’ve heard of is where a rental company will claim that the bike was stolen and hold you responsible, expecting you to pay a very high fee. I’d recommend making sure that the bike is always secure/locked when not in use and use your own locks in additional to what’s provided to you by the rental company to cover yourself.

Final Thoughts on Scooter Hire in Phuket

While renting a scooter in Phuket is a fantastic way to explore the island, you need to make sure that you are not only experienced in operating a scooter/motorbike and that you have the correct licenses and insurance. You also need to take into consideration of the high level of risk.

That said, (again) I personally wouldn’t recommend hiring a scooter when you’re in Phuket. Either take a taxi, tuk tuk, join a tour or use GRAB. Some hotels also offer shuttle buses to local hotspots that you can take advantage of. Don’t ruin your trip with a trip to the hospital.

Scooter & Bike Rental Phuket

Bike or scooter rental in phuket: safe & reliable..

Bike rental is a popular way to get around the island and explore everything this beautiful island has to offer! With Bikago Bike Rental you get the highest quality motorbikes and scooter rentals in Phuket. On top of all that, Bikago offers Phuket’s most comprehensive motorbike and scooter rental insurance options.

Your motorbike or scooter rental in Phuket with Bikago makes it fun to reach any hotspot in beautiful Phuket. At Bikago you will only find high quality and like-new motorbikes and scooter rentals in Phuket. At Bikago we provide safe, reliable and convenient scooter rentals since 2014.

The Bikago Scooter & Bike Rental difference

You will get two free, sanitized and well-fitting helmets with every scooter or bike rental in Phuket. We deliver and pickup your scooter or bike rental free-of-charge anywhere in Phuket. Just let us know your delivery and pickup location and a time that is convenient for you.

The Bikago Customer Care Team is available online 24/7 to provide you with assistance in English. In addition, the Roadside Assistant Team is always on standby to support you anywhere on the island.

All Bikago’s motorbikes and rental scooters in Phuket have been fully prepared for your adventure. A charging phone holder and first aid kit is standard on any scooter or motorbike you rent in Phuket with Bikago.

Motorbike Rental Insurance from Bikago

Bikago’s scooter and bike rental insurances are extensive and one of a kind in Phuket. With our Motorbike Insurance you don’t have to worry about high costs in the event your motorbike gets damaged, stolen or if you’re involved in an accident that damages your motorbike. We have you totally covered regarding all repair and motorbike repatriating costs exceeding USD 95,- (excess/own risk). Should your motorbike or scooter get damaged, stolen or for whatever other reason become unavailable during your rental period with us we will replace your motorbike for a new one until your initial rental period exceeds.

Bikago Add-ons

In addition, at Bikago we offer unique accessories for your Phuket bike rental add-ons to choose from. Do you want to stay connected with your friends and family during your holiday?

Our 5G Tourist Thailand eSIM or SIM cards provide you with full coverage. Now you can enjoy reliable and fast 4G internet all over Phuket and Thailand. Furthermore, you get a charging smartphone holder to easily navigate all over Phuket using Google/Apple Maps or Waze. Also, all our scooters have a first aid kit in the helmet compartment upon delivery.

International Drivers License Thailand

Are you a tourist in Thailand with a scooter or bike rental? Then you are supposed to have an International Driving Permit. In Thailand foreign driver’s licenses aren’t recognized.

Although it is widely called an “International Drivers License” it is in fact an International Driving Permit (IDP). However, the former is the way that most people refer to it. You are required to have the IDP while driving in Phuket, and in wider Thailand by law. A law law that is being increasing enforced in recent years.

If you did not get your International Driving Permit in your home country before entering Thailand we strongly suggest getting one. Even if you decide not to rent your scooter or motorbike with us we suggest you apply online for the International Driving Permit Application so you are ready when you land.

The Bikago Bike Rental Phuket fleet

Take your pick from our extensive fleet of major brands, featuring Yamaha, Honda, Vespa and GPX. Whether for a short-term rental or long-term rental, Bikago is in the business of delivering great experiences, something we take very seriously since 2014. We are proud to be your reliable partner in these soul-expanding, life-enhancing adventures.

Bike Rentals for Phuket’s Hidden Gems

With a scooter or bike rental, you’ll have the flexibility to visit Phuket’s most popular hotspots and destinations, such as:

Patong Beach

Known for its nightlife, shopping, and dining options. In addition, Patong Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island.

Kata and Karon Beach

These two neighboring beaches are known for their white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and range of water sports.

Phuket Old Town

This charming historic district is home to a mix of Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful street art, and traditional markets.

Wat Chalong Temple

One of the most important and respected temples on the island, Wat Chalong is also one of Phuket’s most popular tourist attractions. Getting to Wat Chalong is generally speaking a lot easier on a bike rental from our Phuket fleet.

Phi Phi Islands

These stunning islands are located just a short boat ride from Phuket and are known for their clear waters, coral reefs and an abundance of tropical marine life.

A 45-meter-tall statue offers panoramic views of the island and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals.

Phuket Town Night Market

This bustling night market offers a wide variety of street food, souvenirs and local products. The best part is that you will find those all at very reasonable prices.

Surin Beach

This upscale beach is located in the northern part of the island, known for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches and luxury resorts.

I’m an English guy who’s been travelling since 2017. 5 star rating

When I hired the CB650F, I expected a generic, factory specification stock bike, however, I received a highly maintained, modified version with adjustable levers, crash cage and a leo vince exhaust! This bike was fantastic to ride. The helmets provided were also high quality, near new, and the staff were so easy to contact at all times. I highly recommend their service.

Technical support.

One of the highlights of my recent vacation to Thailand was renting a “big bike” and exploring Phuket-Krabi. Chris and Magda met me at my hotel at the specified time, it was a piece of cake! I did run into a problem with my rear tire near the end of the trip, but they answered my texts quickly and met me with another motorbike! If you are worried about running into issues in a foreign country, Chris and Magda have your back! Highly recommend, good assortment of rentals from scooters to sport bikes to adventure bikes.

Reasonable Repair Cost

... I had a small prang, which was entirely my fault, which caused some minor damage to the bike. You hear horror stories of rental companies charging massively inflated costs for any damage and causing all sorts of issues when a bike is returned. Very happy to say this is not the case with Turtla. There was no drama or issues and they came up with a very reasonable cost for the minor repair. All in all, it was a fantastic service and I have no hesitation in recommending them for your bike hire needs here in Phuket. Thanks guys!

Motorcycle hire Phuket We hired a Honda PCX for 4 days. The service, particularly communication was excellent. They delivered and picked up the bike when they said. Took pictures of previous marks and encouraged me to do the same. Bike was in very good condition and coped with the hills well, even though me and the wife aren't exactly small Can't think of anything they could have done better. Would highly recommend them.

Great service I've rented two new 2019 PCX for a good price. They had mileage like 8k km, so bikes were like new. I've asked for delivery and they bring our bikes to our hotel without any fee! Thank you once again for a great service! I will share your phone number to my friends ;)

Just perfect Had a Yamaha Tricity in excellent condition for 8 days. Drop-off and pick-up at the hotel, at the time agreed. The staff are available via whatsApp. Good value for money. Definitely the best choice for renting a bike in Phuket. A tip if it's your first time in Phuket: get yourself a cheap phone mount at the nearest Tesco.
