According to puranas, The Pushkarini was a pleasure tank of God in Vaikunta, and is a beloved of Lakshmidevi and Bhoodevi. Lord Vishnu is manifested as a dwarf or Trivikrama in this cave. Lord Vishnu is seen in the position of conquering the Earth by his one foot and ruling the sky with his other foot. The entrance of the cave has two guards or dwarapalakas holding lotus in their hands. Different forms of Lord Vishnu are portrayed here. At a distance of 1.5 Kms from Badami Bus Station, Mallikarjuna Group of Temple is a set of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples are located within an enclosed compound just before Boothanatha Temple. Built in Phamsana style (stepped pyramid), these temples were assumed to be constructed during Rashtrakutas and Kalyani Chalukyas. The outer walls of the temple are plain rock without any carvings. The tower of inner sanctom is built in typical Rashtrakuta style of architecture. The main shrine has a pillerd mukha madapa, an enclosed madhya mandapa followed by the inner sanctom. Badami Travel Guide: With Pattadakal, Aihole, & Mahakuta

In the tourism circuit of Karnataka, Badami (Vatapi) is often named in the same breath with the more famous and touristy Hampi. But make no mistake, Badami is a completely sedate and nontouristy town compared to Hampi. More importantly, it is not limited to one town but the circuit covers a few other major sites in the 30km radius. I travelled to Hampi way back in 2011 , but had failed to make any inroads in Karnataka since then. But finally, even through it was not the right season with the blazing sun and dry air in March, I managed to visit this circuit last week. Detailed travelogues about them will take a bit of time but I want to quickly sort out the guide as a lot of people are asking for it.

Understanding the Badami Circuit

As you might have known already, the archaeological remains of Badami were built by the Chalukya Dynasty between 6th to 8th century. This area is very close to Maharasthtar border and even culturally, you can sense it as you roam around the area. In order to understand your routes, have a look at the map above. It is not completely accurate or up to scale but it will help you understand the route. Badami is the main town here that you will reach first. The Badami Caves and other monuments are located within the town. From here people visit Pattadakal (21 KMs) and Aihole (35 KMs), both significant sites on their own. As you can see, there are two routes to cover these. The direct route will help you cover only these two attractions. However, if you take the longer route, you will cover a few more lesser known monuments such as Banashankari and Mahakuta.

So, the primary town here is Badami, which is a small, squalid town that does not seem very appealing at first glance. However, the town itself houses several major archaeological sites mentioned below. It has a few hotels and restaurants and small enough to simply walk around.

Agastya Tank

It is a big lake in the middle of the densely populated old town. It is surrounded by the rugged hillocks where other attractions are located. The best views of the lakes are from the top of the hills. You need to be in the monsoon to see the lake it is full size. There are steps made to climb down to the bottom of the lake.

Badami Archaeological Museum

The museum is located just at the base of the Northern Hills, near the Agastya Lake, and staring at the Badami Caves on the other side of the lake. There is a minimal entry fee of INR 5 but photography is not allowed. This is a good place to start because it gives you an immediate primer into the history of the area.

Fort & Temples of the Northern Hill

Just beyond the Museum, there is a staircase that takes you to the top of the hills. This served as a fort at one point of time and there are also a couple of important temples with excellent stone carvings. You can get excellent views of the town as well as the lake from here.

Bhutanatha Group of Temples

This is a group of temples on the eastern bank of the Agastya Lake. In the rainy season, when the lake is full, the temple looks like half-submerged in water. On top of that, a waterfall comes alive in the hills behind it. Sadly, I visited in the dry month of March, so there was no waterfall and even the the Lake was half empty. Nevertheless, the temples are worth visiting for their sculptures and only 5 minutes walk from the Museum. Also, there are some caves with more sculptures behind the temples.

Badami Caves

Badami Caves are the most famous attractions here. It has four rock-cut caves, each located higher up than the other. Each cave has numerous exquisite sculptures on the walls. The fourth one is a Jain Cavewhile the rest are Hindu Caves. They are located on the other side of the lake, on the southern hill. There is an entry fee of INR 25 for Indians if I remember correctly. These caves are comparable to those of Ellora in terms of setting although smaller in scale.

Banashankari Temple

Banashankari Temple is also an ancient shrine around 5 KMs away from Badami. It is a live temple still in use, so, modern structures have been mixed up with archaeological structures and difficult to distinguish. There is a big stepped tank in front, just like the Agastya tank but there was practically no water here when I visited. It is located in the middle of a busy market place, or may be the market exists because of the temple. It organizes a major “Rath Yatra” with a gigantic chariot fo rthe deity every year. The primary deity here is known as Shakhambari, an incarnation of parvati. The most noticeable structure here is the so called “Guard Tower”, with a strange shape.

Shivayoga Temple

It did not seem like a historical site when we visited. It is around 7 Kms ahead of Banashankari. It was not a part of the plan but it is in the route and the auto-driver took us there. But the primary attraction here is another one of those larget than life chariots that is used for processions once in a year. He told me that it is the second largets chariot in Karnataka at 65 feet. I don’t know how accurate is that bit of information and which is the largest one.

Mahakuta Group of Temples

The Mahakuta Group of Temples were a pleasant suprise for me. It is another few KMs ahead of Shivayoga, on the connecting road towards Pattadakal. It is as big as Aihole with several temples within but I had never heard of it before. This is a live temple and this may be the reason it is not included in the usual archaeologicla route. The temples are built surrounding a small pond, which still had water for a change. The locals were swimming and enjoying there. All the temples expectedly have excellent sculptures but the maintenance probably can be better.

Pattadakal Group of Temples

Pattadakal or Pattadakalu is an UNESCO World Heritage Site 4KMs. Naturally, it is the best maintained of the lot, set amidst a well-manicured garden. There are several 7th and 8th century Hindu and Jain Temples here. If you want to study each and every temple, you will have to spend several days here! There is an entry fee to enter the premises.

Aihole Group of Temples

Finally, Aihole is the final group of temples, that apparently thrived between 4th to 12th centuries, around 35 KMs from Badami. The best-known structure is the so-called “Durga Temple”, which is known for its unique apsidal structure. There is also a museum here with more useful information on the site. Aihole is actually a huge cluster and there are scores of other structures scattered all over the area. But you will need more time to explore all of them.

How to Reach Badami?

The best way to reach Badami is to get a ticket at the Gol Gumbaz Express . The train runs every day between Mysore in Karnataka to Solapur in Maharashtra, passing through Bangalore and Bijapur. It leaves Bangalore station at 6:50 pm and reaches next morning at around 7 am. The railway station is located ages KM’s outside the town. You will find shared autorickshaws and buses from there to reach the town. On shared autos, it cost 10 to reach the town. You may have to pay 20 if you want to reach the KSTDC hotel which is on the other side of the town. Alternatively, you can find night buses from Bangalore bus as you wish preferences. I always go for the train. Also, it is around 150 KMs from Hampi, the other major tourist hub in the region. You can find buses to and from Hampi too. The bus stand is located within the town.

Accommodation in Badami

As I have mentioned already, this town does not really have that touristy vibe and your options are limited. The best-known option here is the state-owned KSTDC Mayura Chalukya. Apart from that, there are a few other hotels in town and a new fancy resort or two just outside the town. I also stayed at the KSTDC one. We were two people and we shared the room cost of 800 between the two. I generally never book hotels but in this case, I did because everything seemed to be above 1000 on weekends and we got a discount deal here. However, if you have the time and patience, you can always ask around the makret for cheaper guesthouses with basic facilities.

Local Commutation from Badami to Pattadakal & Aihole

You can just walk around the town and cover all the major attractions on foot like I did. However, it does get tiresome under the blazing sun as I was there in the wrong season. For visiting other spots, like Aihole & Pattadakal, there are multiple options.

Firstly, you can always look for local transport, such as shared cars and buses used by locals. It will cost peanuts but in that case you will not be in control of the timing. Especially if you are doing it in the wrong season, you would not like to end up walking long distances due to lack of transport.
One good option is the opt for the daily Tempo Traveller that leaves from the aforementioned KSTDC Hotel every morning 8 AM. It costs INR 550 per head and covers Badami, Pattadakail, Aihole, Banashankari, and Mahakuta. Generally it needs to have enough passengers to take on the trip and will be hard to make them go if you are the only one.
Finally, we hired a local autorickshaw for INR 1000 divided between two and covered all the places mentioned above. May be you can even bargain a bit and bring it down to INR 800 but we were happy with the 1K rate.

Best Season for Badami

Winter and monsoon months are the most convenient for this region. This is an arid region with a punishing summer, and the summer starts as early as March. It was difficult for me too but anyway I had to do it. But if you are planning beforehand, I would suggest you to visit during the rainy season because that is when the heat will subside, the lakes will be full, and a waterfall or two will also come alive.

The region is well-connected now and I had no problems with internet or phone connectivity at any of these spots.

Alcohol Availability

Even the KSTDC Hotel has a restaurant that sells beer. I saw another hotel with a bar in town. Even locals visit them.

I am travelling from bangalore and my family from sangli they will reach around 11 but I will cover the whole night travelling so I need to get fresh n up . Please suggest any guest house as I am having guitar DSLR i can’t take risk for local washrooms near temple. Suggest any hotel which can provide the hotel for 2-3 hours in morning time as I will reach at 8 at badami.

Hey… it is not a very happening place so the guest houses are of very basic nature. Only reliable place is the KSTDC hotel.

About Badami:

The origin of Badami can be traced to mythology. According to legend, two demon brothers, Vatapi and Ilvala, lived here. For preying on humans, Vatapi would turn into a goat, and Ilvala would cook him and offer it to the human. Afterward, Vatapi would regenerate inside the stomach, tearing himself out from the inside thereby killing the victim. When the powerful sage Agastya arrived near a lake, Vatapi and Ilvala played the same sequence. However, Agastya was known for his enormous ingestion and digestion prowess. As such, as soon as Agastya ate Vatapi, he digested him thereby killing Vatapi. Hence, Badami was previously known as Vatapi, and the lake came to be known after Agastya.

Later, Pulakesin I founded the Chalukya dynasty and made Vatapi his capital. Inscriptions suggest that he made fortifications in Vatapi in 544. Gradually, Vatapi became one of the centers of power in Deccan under Kirtivarmana I, Mangalesha, and the greatest of the Early Chalukyas, Pulakesin II.

1. North Fort:

One of the most important attractions of Badami is the North Fort. Nothing remains much of the fort, but stray structures confirm that the hill was used as a bastion right from the Chalukyan era up to the times of Tipu Sultan and the Marathas.

The walk along the steps of North Fort is quite pleasant. You will notice various edifices such as a few open ‘mandapas’ which were probably used by the Chalukyan rulers for ceremonial purposes, two circular granaries, and a ruined complex with a number of chambers.

Two Shivalayas are the center of attraction in the North Fort. The Lower Shivalaya is a typical Early Chalukyan structure, though only the towered sanctuary has survived the test of time. Check out the iron canon located beside the temple, which bears the date 1550.

The Upper Shivalaya is also partly demolished. Contrary to its present name, it was originally a Vaishnava temple. It is evident from the wall narrations of Krishna lifting Govardhana, Krishna trampling Kaliya, Narasimha killing Hiranyakashyapa, and so on.

Badami’s museum has some interesting artifacts on display. Such as the Pallava inscription which records the annexation of Vatapi in 642 by Narasimhavarmana I of Kanchipuram, a remarkable manifestation of Lajja Gauri, two panels depicting Shiva aiming an arrow at the Tripura demons and Shiva spearing Andhaka.

This picturesque lake is encircled by the Bhutanatha Group of Temples and North Fort. It is believed to possess healing powers. Additionally, a dip in the lake is supposed to relieve all sins. You need to take a walk along the steps of the lake to reach the main Bhutanatha temple.

4. Bhutanatha Group of Temples:

This group of temples is one of the iconic spectacles of Badami. These regal temples will grab your attention while you are exploring the North Fort or the Cave Temples.

This group is further subdivided into two parts – the Eastern or Main Bhutanatha group, and the Northern or Mallikarjuna group. We couldn’t visit the Mallikarjuna group as it was closed. So, we will be discussing our experience at the Main Bhutanatha group.

The main group is situated to the east of Agastya Lake. The complex has several smaller shrines surrounding the main monument. While the smaller temples are attributed to Later Chalukyas, the principal temple is the handiwork of Early Chalukyan architects. It is further characterized by Dravida styled multi-storied tower.

The tour of Bhutanatha Group does not end here. The complex has some more fascinating places. Take the stairs behind the main temple, which will bring you to the rear portion of the complex. Here, you can see numerous sculptures on the cliff. They range from the Dashavatars of Vishnu, Mahisasuramardini, Ganesha, and so on. There are numerous such amateurish carvings in the vicinity. Probably, the artists practiced here before embarking on the main task.

The stairs will bring you further near the lake, where there is a small Vishnu shrine. It preserves a rock-cut icon of Vishnu resting on Adisesha.

5. South Fort:

The South Fort houses Badami’s most famous and popular attraction – the four cave temples. These four rock-cut monuments are regarded as the first great achievements of the Early Chalukyas. They have been cut directly into the cliff of South Fort. We heartily suggest you to visit it after 3 PM, as the caves glisten spectacularly under the last rays of the sun.

This is the only cave that has been dedicated to Shiva. The first carving which takes away all the attention is that of an impressive 18-armed dancing Shiva, lying to the right of the cave’s entrance.

On entering the columned verandah, turn left to marvel at the illustration of Harihara accompanied by Parvati and Lakshmi. The adjacent wall has a ‘dwarapala’, with Shiva-Parvati riding Nandi above.

To your right, there lies a sculpture of Ardhanarishwara, escorted by Nandi and Bhringi, and a female attendant.

Not only the walls but the ceilings are equally sculpted with precision. Notable among them is a coiled ‘Nagaraja’. Some celestial couples flying can also be seen in the vicinity.

This cave temple is devoted to Vishnu. On either side of the entrance, notable are the sculptures of two guardian figures holding small flowers.

As you enter the colonnaded verandah, you will be fascinated, on one hand, by an imposing rock carving of Vishnu as Trivikarma with a diminutive Vamana and that of Varaha rescuing Bhudevi, on the other.

Check out the friezes at the top of the wall that portrays the birth of Krishna, Vishnu asleep on Adisesha, and other Vaishnava legends.

Here also, the ceilings have interesting carvings such as ‘swastika’ and a fish-spoked wheel probably implying Vishnu’s Matsya avatar.

Dedicated to Vishnu, Cave 3 is the largest and most elaborate of all the cave temples. An outstanding rock carving of Trivikarma adorns the right wall of the entrance.

As you enter the verandah, lay your eyes upon the lively sculpture of Vishnu seated majestically on Adisesha. This is perhaps the most striking of all the rock-cut carvings in the South Fort. Varaha avatar of Vishnu lies on the adjacent wall.

On the opposite end, you will find the fierce Narasimha, leaning on a club. The adjoining wall has a representation of Harihara.

The ceiling panels are also more elaborate here, depicting Kubera, Indra, Brahma with ‘rishis’, Varuna with ‘makara’, and Shiva and Parvati.

You can also make out faint traces of mural fragments on the walls and ceilings of Cave 3.

This is the only cave that has been pledged to Jainism. It is the smallest and the carvings are also less sophisticated as compared to the other three.

On the left end of the verandah, you will find Bahubali, in his standing meditation posture. While on the right, there is a sculpture of Parshwanatha with a multi-hooded cobra rising over his head.

Along with these two main carvings, there are several other representations of Jaina Tirthankaras, along with a statue of Mahavira placed inside the sanctum.

Things to remember:

1. Like all other Archaeological Museums in India, the one in Badami remains closed on Fridays. It is open on other days from 10 AM to 5 PM. The entry fee is INR 5 per person.

2. The entry fee for Badami’s Cave Temples is INR 40 per person. Visitors can go here from 9 in the morning till 6 in the evening.

3. An entry fee is not required for other monuments of Badami. They generally remain open every day, from 9 AM to 6 PM.

4. The Cave Temples are filled with aggressive and daring monkeys. Keep your belongings safe and close, especially water bottles, food packets, and sunglasses.

5. For traveling around Badami, the only mode of transport is an autorickshaw. We hired one for the entire day. It charged INR 500, including drop-off at Badami rail station.

6. Compared to Aihole and Pattadakal, Badami is a bustling town. You will get every necessary item here, including working ATMs.

7. There are some interesting places nearby Badami. First is Mahakuta, which is 14 km from Badami and is a sacred pilgrimage center. The main attractions here are the 7th-century Mahakuteshvara Temple, Sangameshvara Temple, Virupaksha Temple, and Mallikarjuna Temple. Second is Banashankari Temple, the most popular pilgrimage center of this area. It is 5 km away from Badami. You can also visit Naganathkolla, which lies midway between Mahakuta and Banashankari and has the Naganatha Temple, hailing from the early Chalukyan times.

8. There are also several pre-historic sites around Badami such as Sidilaphadi, Ranganathgudda, and Aralitirtha. However, they are mostly isolated. We strongly suggest not venturing alone here and taking a local guide for visiting them.

A better place to understand India’s heritage and experience the rural side of the country; journey to Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal can be summarised like this. These places are less popular on the tourism map, hence very suitable for those preferring an offbeat destination for their travel. You can visit these three places in two days, a weekend is more enough. But if you have more time, you can include few more places nearby like Hampi and Bijapur.

How to reach Badami?

Overnight buses are there from Bangalore. So better try to catch a bus that reaches Badami by morning next day. Buses are always available from Hampi and Mangalore also. If you wish to travel in train. Find any passing through Hubli station. From there Badami is around 120 km away. Trains are also available from Hubli to Badami. Badami railway station is about 2-3 km from the town.

For return also either you can take train or bus. Bus booking offices can be found along the main street itself.

Accommodation

Badami is the only option for accommodation. It is big compared to Aihole and Pattadakal. You will easily find hotels in the main city centre itself. During peak times, make sure you book rooms in advance. The rooms are economical in general. If coming in groups, it is better to get a bigger room that can accommodate minimum 4-5 people, so per head expense will be around 400 INR.

Things to do

If you are reaching Badami by morning, find a hotel so that you can fresh up and keep your bag. It is better to visit Aihole first. Buses are available from Badami. But they are not frequent and you will find little difficult to find buses at right time. Another option is hiring an auto rickshaw. I hired an auto for 800 INR for 5 people for a day. You can hitchhike also.

Aihole is 35 km from Badami. The temple complex is preserved the Archaeological Survey of India. The complex is open from 6 AM to 5.30 PM all the days of the week. There are other monuments spread across the village. The entry fee to the complex is INR 10 for Indian citizens and INR 250 for the foreign citizen. If you have time, it is good to explore the village. You can find many interesting things while walking inside the village. The people here are very friendly and welcoming. So don’t hesitate to start a conversation and understand the life and culture here.

Few small tea shops are the only refreshment options in Aihole.

Pattadakal is between Aihole and Badami, 22 km from Badami. You can spend the second half of the day there. The temple complex is a UNESCO world heritage site. It remains open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Evenings are the best here. This temple complex is not so big, so you can reach back Badami by nightfall. There are few basic shops outside the complex.

There is plenty to see in Badami. One day is needed to visit all the important places. The monuments are spread in three regions across the city but nearby. The rock cave temples are on one side of the hill.

Once you come to the opposite side, there is a museum and Badami fort. You have to trek up to reach the fort, from the top you will get the view of Badami and the surrounding areas. All the monuments in Badami are open from 6 AM to 6 PM. The entry fees to Badami cave temples are 10 INR for Indians and 100 INR for foreign citizens.

On the banks of Agasthya lake, you will see the Bhoothnath temple situated in a surreal backdrop of Badami hills. The temple is best during evenings. The timings are same as other monuments.

So if you want to explore more here, trek up to Mahakuta early in the morning. The trek route is about 6 km, it will take 1-2 hours depending on your walking speed to reach there. You can experience the landscapes and flora of this region during the trek. Temple will be less crowded if you reach early in Mahakuta, you can have a dip in the Vishnu pushkarni (tank). Inside the pond, there is a small chamber and we can go inside the chamber through a very small gap beneath the pond.

I came to know about Mahakuta from our auto-rickshaw driver. He insisted us to definitely visit the temple complex and it is worth visiting, especially the trek.

Either you can trek back the same route or take a taxi. It will be better to take a taxi so that you can save time. Moreover, it will be very hot during mid-day time.

I missed all these temple complexes on a recent visit to India. I did take an overnight bus from Bangalore but I forget where to. I love visiting UNESCO sites so would love to visit the temple complexes.

I adore traveling in rural areas, this is by far my favorite way to explore new countries. Big cities tend to be bland and all and the same all over the world, while small settlements preserve their unique atmosphere.

Ebbin, you can travel to these three places on a minimum budget. An overnight bus journey from Banglore will cost you about 700 INR for a sleeper bus. The expense for stay is also comparatively low. You can find budget hotels in Badami.

I planned on doing the same itinerary covering these places along with Hampi. However those plans didnt go through. I also heard there are sunflower fields between Hampi & Badami and they bloom after rains. Did you happen to see them. Are they any good?

Places to see in Badami in a day

On our recent trip to Karnataka’s cultural circuit , i.e., a trip to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole, we spent a day in Badami. On that day we explored the different places to see in Badami in one day. Although, there are lots of places to see in Badami. But, we were visiting with kids. So, our’s was a relaxed trip. And we only included the highlights or the top places to see in Badami in our one day Badami trip itinerary. Nevertheless, today we bring you the list of places to visit in Badami. Including those which we visited. And those places to see in Badami that we had to skip because of slow travel that we opted for this time.

Badami – an introduction

Located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka and lying in the valley of the Malaprabha river, the town of Badami holds great cultural and historical significance in the history of Karnataka and India. Actually there are some inscriptions in Badami as old as the iron age – showing how ancient is the civilisation in this part of the country. Surrounded by the sandstone hills from all sides, this valley is naturally protected. And hence provided a very strategic location for human civilisation and ancient kingdoms to flourish.

Badami flourished as the capital during the rule of the Chalukya Dynasty . It is around this time that the Chalukya kings commissioned development of a lot of temples in this region. The temple art was practiced at Aihole. And small prototypes of temples practiced. As the artisans gained more expertise, they moved to Badami. And developed the impeccable cave temples of Badami. As well as the Bhootnatha group of temples – all of which are stunning to the core. Further they developed the Pattadakal Temple Complex. Which was the epitome of the temple architecture. In Pattadakal they developed temples in both Naggara (North Indian) and Dravidian (South Indian) form of architecture. In fact, some temples are even fusion of the two.

Badami kept flourishing as the administrative capital until the Vijayanagara Empire came into being. Post which Hampi became the administrative capital. But Badami still remained a very important cultural base of this region. The word “Badami” comes from the Hindi word “Badam” which means “Almond”. The color of the sandstone hills and the temples in Badami reflects the color of the Almond peel. And thats how the name of Badami.

There are many places to see in Badami and around the small town. Mostly they are ancient temples, some inscriptions, fort, and beautiful natural surroundings. So, without further delay, let’s take you through the places to see in Badami in a day.

Badami Cave Temples

Without doubt, the Cave Temples of Badami are the most famous of all the attractions in Badami. So, they were our first choice as well. Post breakfast, we headed to the Badami Cave temples. There is a small parking in front of the temples. So, we parked our vehicle here. However, there was crowd, and the parking was not very systematic. So, I suggest you take a local autorickshaw to the Badami Cave Temples. That will be much more convenient.

There are a total of 5 cave temples in Badami. 4 of which are located one after the other. While the 5th is located on a different side. These temples are carved into caves in the sandstone hills surrounding the whole region. And the temples were part of the majestic Badami Fort. Massive walls of Badami Fort can still be seen running all the way on the cliff of the hills on which the Badami Cave Temples are located. The caves temples are each dedicated to a different God –

5 Badami Cave Temples

Cave 1 the Natraj Temple, dedicated to God Shiva
The second Cave temple is the Vishnu Temple
Cave 3 is the largest and is dedicated to a hybrid of Vaishnavism and Shaivism.
Interestingly the fourth Cave Temple at Badami is dedicated to Jain Tirthankars.
The fifth and the last cave temple is a little mystery that remains to be solved. For, it is a very small cave with a statue that some say looks like Buddha and others say looks like Vishu. So, it is still not established whom this cave was dedicated to.

While the outer structure of these temples remain more or less the same, each temple has unique carvings of Gods. And could have been the inspiration for many other cave temples of India. Personally, they brought back strong memories of the Udayagiri Cave Temples from my Madhya Pradesh trip couple of years back. Is it possible that the Ajanta and Ellora Caves in Maharashtra could have drawn inspirations from here ?

There are well defined steps cut out in the stones to climb the cave temples. And there are benches to sit and rest in front of each of the cave temples. Also, don’t forget to soak in the awesome views of the Agastya Lake and the Bhootnath Temples on the bank of the lake, as seen from the Badami Cave Temples. As you trek up, the scenes get better and better!!

Lake Agastya

Right besides the Cave Temples lies the largest water reservoir of Badami – Lake Agastya. The lake was constructed in the 5th Century. It has several other temples along it’s banks apart from the Badami Cave Temples. And is considered a very holy lake. In fact, it’s water is believed to have healing properties. We visited Lake Agastya after exploring the cave temples. There are steps all around the lake. Where one can sit and spend some time in tranquility besides the lake. Sunset views across Lake Agastya are particularly famous.

Bhootnatha Group of Temples

After visiting Lake Agastya, we first proceeded for lunch at the Clarks Inn Badami. And then took an autorickshaw to the Bhootnatha Group of Temples in Badami . There are two distinct set of temples – one located right on the bank of the Lake Agastya. And another group of temples located more inland. However, both are so beautiful. Walking along the sides of the lake, soaking in the views of the Badami Caves from across the lake, we reached the Bhoothnatha Group of Temples.

Apart from the main temple, there are several other smaller temples around. And some cave temples as well, with carvings of the different forms of Vishnu, Ganesha, Shiva, Durga and many other Gods.A path from in front of the carved stones leads all the way to the banks of Lake Agastya. We sat here for a very long time, enjoying the cool breeze and the beautiful views of hills surrounding the temple from all sides.

Archeological Museum of Badami

As we traced our steps back from the Bhoothnatha Temple we stopped briefly at the Archeological Museum of Badami. The Archeological Survey of India opened the Badami Museum in 1979. The museum contains different important sculptures, engraved and inscripted stones, idols of Gods carved on stones etc. that were formed in and around Badami. And have played a significant role in helping to reconstruct the history of this region. The artefacts in the Badami Museum date back from 6th to 16th century AD. The most attractive pieces in this museum include scenes and narrations in the form of sculptures from Bhagvath Gita, different forms of Shiva including Bhairavi, Lajja Gauri and Makar Toran.

Entry fee to the Archeological Museum of Badami: Rs. 25/- per adult. Kids below 12 years of age have free entry

Upper Shivalaya & Lower Shivayala

The Badami Shivalayas are Hindu Temples located on top of the northern hills in Badami, in region that was part of the Badami Fort long back. These were constructed between 6th to 8th century. While the upper Shivalaya is located to Lord Vishnu, the Lower Shivalaya are dedicated to Lord Shiva. And as the name suggests, the Lower Shivayala are located on the lower side while the Upper Shivalaya embrace the topmost peak of the northern hills. There is one more Shivalaya, called Mallegitti Sivalaya which is much better preserved. It is associated with Devi – sculptures. Scenes from Hindu epics like Mahabharatha and Ramayana can also be seen on the walls of these temples.

Apart from the temple visit, one can enjoy mesmerising 360 degree views all around, particularly from the Upper Shivalaya. Including bird’s eye view of the town of Badami, the Agastya Lake and Bhootnatha Group of temples, the Badami Caves on the opposite hill and far and wide. Trekking here in the evening is a popular activity.

Badami Fort

The Chalukyas built the Badami Fort. It was a massive fort of it’s time. As is evident from the double walls running on top of the sandsone hills all around Badami. Where ever you venture in Badami, I am sure you can see the walls of the fort from there. The Fort was strategically built to further add to the natural protection that the hills provided to this valley. Post the Chalukyas rule, the Badami Fort was captured by the Pallavas. And finally by Tipu Sultan. Who further strengthened the fort. The parts of the Badami Fort can be seen from across the Badami Cave Temples. And one can trek up there to see several important parts of the Badami Fort.

Banashankari Temple

A relatively new temple, Banashankari Temple or Bandhankari Amma Temple in Badami is dedicated to Goddess Banashankari. She is believed to be a powerful Goddess and the one who showers her blessings on the whole region. She is also the “Kul Devi” or the main Deity of many families from North Karnataka as well as south Maharashtra. The temple is huge. And you can expect crowd here. There is a ticketing system to get the “Darshan” of the Devi once you enter inside. Which is customary to many other temples of South India including the Meenakshi Ammana Temple in Madurai and the Tirupati Temple. Friday is particularly significant day of the Banashankari Devi. And hence you can expect more crowd when visiting here on a Friday.

We actually didn’t visit here along with other places to see in Badami. But the day before in the evening while we were coming back to our hotel in Badami. After visiting the Pattadakal group of temples and the Durga Temple Complex at Aihole .

Other places to see in Badami

Apart from the above, there are several temples located within 3-5km of the main town of Badami. If you have time, you can include them as well in your group of places to see in Badami. Some of these include :

Mahakuta Temple
Sangameshwara Temple
Uma Maheshwari Temple

Apart from visiting the temples and the historical sites, Badami has a lot to offer to the adventurous souls. Couple of these things to do in Badami include rock climbing and trekking.

General information for planning a trip to Badami

Here’s our complete guide to visit Badami, along with our 4 days Badami trip itinerary. There are organised day trips to Badami from Goa and Hampi. Both of which are located at around 2.5-3 hours drive from Badami. However, spending just a single day in Badami can in no way be sufficient. Also, when one visits Badami, one shouldn’t leave visiting the UNESCO world heritage site at the Pattadakal temple complex. And the cradle of temple architecture in India at Aihole. There is no other place in India like these two. And to be honest, I really enjoyed the slow paced travel around these three places over the course of 4 days that we stayed in Badami. So, I personally highly recommend spending 3-4 days in Badami and around.

Some quick tips to plan a trip to Badami

You can commute to Badami in a bus, taxi or self drive
Badami is well connected through rail network as well. Overnight trains from Bangalore to Badami are a convenient way to reach Badami and save travel time as well.
If you are visiting the heritage sites of Hampi, then you can as well visit Badami along with it

Winters are considered best season to visit Badami, but right around the onset of monsoons are also a good time. We visited Badami in the beginning of July. There were hardly any showers and to was overcast most of the times. With cold and pleasant winds. Summers are very hot.So, avoid summer season.
Wear comfortable cloths. Good to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting the temples. Although active worshipping is not done in most of these temples. But still it is a good gesture to show your respect.
You can stay in Badami at Heritage Resort Badami – we had a comfortable stay here. Or, you can stay at Clarks Inn Badami which is located at walkable distance from the cave temples. Food options were more elaborate at Clarks Inn Badami .
For local commute, best is to hire a local autorickshaw or taxi.
There is a lot of walking and steps to be climbed around the temples. So, keep that in mind when planning a trip to Badami with kids and elderly.
While site seeing in Badami you can stop for lunch at Clarks Inn Hotel which is located right in the center of the main market.

Everything you need to know about badami.

Karnataka has always set the right tone for a walk through India’s age-old culture and craftsmanship. One among such places of great historical and cultural importance is Badami (Vatapi).

The town is like a masterpiece sculpted out of ancient red sandstone. Accentuated by the holy Agastya Lake around the town, it’s a timeless heritage centre.

The royal capital of the Chalukyas from 540 AD to 757 AD, you can locate this alluring town in the Bagalkot district of North Karnataka.

Adorned by intricate Dravidian architecture and relief work, the monuments here are a reflection of the surreal magic the town holds.

The temperature variations are not much, and so a visit round the year is favourable.

How to reach

Air travel is facilitated through Hubballi airport which is at a distance of 100 kilometres from Badami.

An easier mode of transport would be the rail lines connecting to Badami. The Badami railway station is barely at a distance of 5 km from the town. You can choose to take a rickshaw or walk the distance till there.

The Bagalkot Junction Railway station is also accessible at a distance of 33 km.

Since it’s a government-approved heritage site, there are common buses available from Bangalore as well. The bus ride would take a duration of 11-13 hours during no rush hours.

From the infamous architectural spectacle, Hampi, the town is marked 150 km

If you’re driving to Badami, assuming that Bangalore City would be the starting point, you’d have to cover an approximate distance of 425 km.

Bangalore – Chitradurga – Hubli (NH4) – Nargund – Badami

Why Badami?

Undoubtedly, Badami’s high sandstone cliffs are why you have to put up the town on your must-visit places. A popular free sport climbing and bouldering spot, the cliffs have established a reputation of having safe climbing routes.

The crack systems and the bolted routes are often compared to the premier climbing areas of the Shawangunks in the West.

With above 150 bolted routes of varying difficulty levels, its the perfect spot for beginners as well as a challenging climb for experienced rock climbers.

I had chosen the climb from Saraswati area, a lesser explored site almost 700m from Badami bus station. With the help of a reliable instructor, I managed to climb through the bolted routes. The view while I was hanging midway with the rope attached, is something I’d not want to trade in return for any other experience. On having reached the topmost point, I was rewarded with a 360° view of the plantations and the water bodies that stood still with time. I had earlier missed out on all these while being engrossed in the Dravidian architecture.

This point was also quite intimidating due to its towering height, but the instructor assured me that unlike Granite, sandstone is not of high impact.

There are other areas as well such as the Ganesha area, Delux area, Kannaragavi area, and so on, not farther away than 3 km from the Badami bus stop.

Yet another activity at Badami that you cannot miss out on, is the trek across temples and monuments here. There are easy walks of 2-3 hours from North fort to the temples. Then there are the treks that will keep you engaged for the entire day, based on your interest in trekking you can choose either one of the options.

Spottable around here

Big things come in small packages.

This was my exact thought while exploring the humble town of Badami. There is no dearth in the feast this small town arranges for the eyes of the visitors every day.

1. Badami Cave Temples

Magnificent rock-cut architecture with Chalukyan inspired carvings, the Cave temples are definitely what brings in the crowd to Badami.

It’s the converging point of different cultures and traditions. The Cave temple is an umbrella structure for four beautiful temples. Three of which worship Hindu deities and the other is dedicated to the practice of Jainism. These temples are not dissected as four parts, instead form a network through a flight of stairs that connect each temple to the other.

A very noticeable feature of these temples is the Dravidian architecture from the South combined with the Nagara architecture from the North. It’s what I love to label as the best of both worlds.

Nataraj, Vishnu, and Mahavira are few among the deities who are worshipped here.

A walk around the temple would be a feast to your eyes. An exemplar of astounding craftsmanship, don’t miss out on the remarkable relief works and paintings on the ceilings and pillars. The ceilings, in particular, are engraved with the infamous picture of the trio Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma bordered with the lining of stalks of lotus flowers.

Open during the hours of 9 am to 5’30pm, the temple is a must-visit architectural spectacle in Badami.

2. Mallikarjuna Group Of Temples

A place that should definitely fall on your itinerary to Badami, are the Mallikarjuna temples adjacent to the infamous Bhootnath temples. An early morning visit to these temples would leave you at a loss of words. That’s just how mesmerising the sandstone sculptures look when the first rays of the day shimmer over it.

Opened for a public visit during the hours of 5’30 am-1’00 pm and again from 3’00 pm-7’00 pm in the evening.

These temples in particular are quite unique with their pyramidical framework. Established by the Chalukyas, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

A very important heritage site in Badami, the place is embedded by many small shrines constructed during the reign of Kalyani Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas.

People with immense interest in architecture and history would be left under a spell looking at the Phansana styled Shikharas.

The creamy layer to the charm of this stone structure is the hues of Agastya Lake surrounding the temple premises.

3. Badami Fort

Subtlety wraps this towering structure like a vine. A 2km trek from the main town, this fort is an untouched reflection of the vast South India history.

Established and fortified by King Pulakeshi, the tower was destroyed by the Pallavas and remained in ruins for a really long while.

Later on, the walls of the fort were rebuilt on, and the entire structure was polished up to look like before. After which it was opened for tourist visits with a minimum fee of Rs 5.

The fort is placed in such a way that the view from here offers you an absolute view of the entire town. Not like miniatures, but a very up-close view.

Large granaries, watchtowers, underground chambers, all planned and placed strategically. It’s impossible to not admire the thought and effort that went behind in creating such stunning structures.

The kings have double fortified the fort, to ensure lesser safety and security breaches. You can also spot large dust sieved cannon that is said to have witnessed numerous attacks on the fort.

A fascinating architecture right near the archaeological fort is that of a masjid built by the great Tipu Sultan.

4. Archaeological Museum

If there was a summary of what this place looked like to me, it’d be this,

National Treasure.

That’s what the Badami Archaeological museum is. A treasure within the carved antiquity in the form of a museum.

Even though built around the year of 1979, it was transformed to cater to the increasing number of tourists by the year 1982. Located close enough to the Badami Fort, the Museum is now trekkable from all the major tourist places around here.

On entering the gates, you’d be welcomed by an idol of Nandi. The museum has four galleries, out of which two are open galleries.

Watching the sunset at Agastya Lake in Badami is an oddly calming experience. With the scenic rock hills as a curtain, the lake puts up the most mesmerising show.

Said to be constructed in the 5th century, localites believe that this lake holds immense healing properties.

Cocooned by the Bhootnath and Cave temples, Agastya Lake is considered to be a highly spiritual abode.

It’s barely a kilometre away from the Badami bus station and is quite easily spottable. The water is now used for bathing and washing purposes, so it wouldn’t be ideal to step down here for swimming.

A lot of devotees have made it a routine to stop by the sacred water body around the lake called Pushkarini. This sacred spot was said to be brought to Earth by Garuda and is one of the favourite places of Goddess Lakshmi Devi.

Before entering the temples, a majority of them make sure to take a dip in the holy waters of Pushkarini or Agastya.

30 km from Badami is this place that’s often described as an Archaeologist’s delight.

Carvings that have thrived over 1200 years, Sanskrit-Kannada inscriptions dating back to 634 CE, the excavations and investigations regarding the wide history of this place is still ongoing with much enthusiasm.

Located amidst the contrasting carpets of greenery, this temple complex is home to 125 Chalukyan temples.

Many of the temples in this complex are dedicated to Jainism, and one among the infamous mark of this is the Aihole inscription composed by the Jain poet Ravikeerthi.

The inscription glorifies the victories of Pulakeshi ll, the Chalukyan ruler who was a follower of Jainism.

A legacy that I found even more interesting than the complex was regarding the etymology. Lord Parasuram after having avenged the demise of his father, had come down to the river to wash off the bloodstains. Seeing the clear waters turn into blood red, a villager screams “Ayyo Hole” in Kannada which translates to “Oh no Blood!”. From where the place got its name Aihole.

7. Malegitti Shivalaya Fort And Temple

If the regal vibes of the Chalukya dynasty have still not struck you, this place would definitely take you back to the old times.

Malegitti Shivalaya Fort, built-in 7th century Dravida style is an exceptional marvel. A part of the Badami Shivalaya consisting of the Upper and Lower Shivalaya. In comparison to both the temple fort’s that have been over through ruins and reconstructions, the Malegitti Shivalaya stands tall without much damage caused to it.

The Shivalaya consists of a sanctuary that opens into a beautiful mandapa. Walls of both are divided into panels that are engraved with Gana musicians, warriors and other artists.

The rock-cut structure along with the azure skies lined by clouds shows the beauty in the refined rawness of Badami.

The ideal time to visit this place would be the early morning hours of 6-8 am. The temple fort is accessible till 6 pm in the evening.

8. Banashankari Amman temple

Trek your way to Cholachagudd in Bagalkot, to find this architectural masterpiece named Banashankari Amman Temple. Lovingly also called the ‘Vanashankari’ because of its location in the Tilakaaranya forest, she’s considered to be a tutelary deity.

One must pass through this resourceful forest lands to reach the temple, which was pretty fascinating to me. The temple area and forests had plantations of coconut, betel leaf and many more fruit-bearing trees.

Few among the priests were narrating about how the goddess provided necessary edibles through these forests when they had faced a severe famine.

At the entrance of the temple, is the 360 ft. water tank closed up with stone mandalas on three sides and an entry point on the other. The tank is called as Haridra Tirtha by the localites and has a beauty to it which is magnetic.

Originally built in the 7th century by the Chalukya kings, the temple is an important part of the Badami culture even today. The annual festival of Banashankari Jatre is a pompously celebrated event. Months of January and February are allocated specifically for the Jatre and is grandly conducted with Rath yatras, boat festivals and traditional cultural programs.

The sight looked like a beautiful illusion with the Vijayanagara style structure all embedded with golden lights while the Devi was paraded around in a humble chariot.

With a Mukha Mantapa, Ardha Mantapa, Vimana, the historical temple was complex like a bewitching maze.

9. Ravana Pahad

Anti-hero for many, Hero for others – one of the most iconic characters in Hindu mythology is Ravana. The 10 headed scholar and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, is said to have facilitated the construction of Ravana Pahad.

Built-in the 6th century, it is one of the earliest known structures to have been built around Badami. Ravana Pahad is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is quite evident through the way it has been constructed as well. A figure of Nandi carved completely out of one stone welcomes the visitor to the cave. The exteriors adorn four pillars that lead to the cave with relief sculptures of Shiv-Parvathi. Extensively carved and designed with the utmost care, the Shiv-Parvathi sculpture is a true piece of skilled craftsmanship.

Alongside this, the cave also has a mandapa with bas-relief sculptures of the several avatars of Vishnu – one among the Trimurthis.

Accompanying this is the artistic sculptures of the third among the Trimurthis – Shiva.

The temple is easily locatable from the north of the Aihole temple complex. Different from the temple-like structures in Aihole is this cave dedicated to the God of destruction.

10. Akka Tangi falls

The perfect spot to chill around during the early hours of sunrise, Akka Tangi falls was a shift from the rustic nature of the town to a fresher side of it.

Ideal to be visited post-monsoon, the falls are open to visit till 5’30 pm.

It’s barely a kilometre from the Badami main bus stand and is situated right atop the Bhutanatha group of temples.

There isn’t much of a crowd during early morning hours, but later on, bunches of pilgrims come by to wash their feet before entering the temple premises.

There wasn’t much history attached to it that the localites could narrate but they referred to the idea of the waterfalls being sisters. Hence the name Akka (elder sister) Thangi (younger sister) falls.

The falls aren’t heavy and it’s easily accessible. There was a long period of the dry spell, which was compensated for with the long due rains.

Post monsoon the falls are a spectacular sight and creates a ‘Jalapath’. Walking amidst it felt like the most perfect way to end the Badami trip.

The capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 AD to 757 AD, Badami was known by the mythological name Vatapi . After the establishment of the Chalukya Empire in 500 AD, the Chalukya King Pulakeshi built a fort at Vatapi and made it the kingdom’s prized capital. The city is famous for its several archeological monuments that the Badami Chalukyas built. Most buildings exemplify the distinctive Dravidian architectural styles. The city came under the reign of the various kingdoms and dynasties like the Vijaynagar Empire, Adil Shahi Dynasty, Mughals, Marathas, Mysore Kingdom and the British. Here’s the list of the best places you can visit in Badami .

1. Badami Cave Temples

The temples were created by the Badami Chalukyas in the 6th and the 7th centuries. Badami cave temples were carved from a massive sandstone cliff located in the city. The sandstone from the cliff was perfect for carving, and the cave temples are marvelous examples of the Badami Chalukya architecture. The temples are located between a ravines surrounded by huge cliffs. The architecture is a fine cross between Nagara (north Indian) and the Dravidian (south Indian).

2. Bhutanatha Group of Temples

The temples are built in soft sandstone famous in this region and were built by the Badami Chalukyas between the 7th and the 11th centuries AD. The group of shrines is dedicated to the Hindu deity Bhutanatha which is another name for Lord Shiva . The temple complex is a prized specimen of the marvelous Badami Chalukya architecture which was a blend of the north Indian and south Indian styles. The various stone sculptures and stone carved structures will make you spellbound for sure.

3. Mallikarjuna Group of Temples

The Mallikarjuna Group of Temples is located right near the Bhutanatha Group of Temples. The temples display a different style of architecture which is the reason for the pyramidal shape of the buildings. The temples were built in the 11th century by the Badami Chalukyas.

4. Badami Fort

While the ancient fort built by the Chalukya King Pulakeshi in 543 AD is in ruins, it is still a must visit due to the quaint nature of the surroundings and the fort’s location. The fort was ransacked and destroyed by the Pallavas in 642 AD. The fort walls and a gate are the only remnants of the once marvelous architecture.

5. Malegitti Shivalaya

Malegitti Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva the Temple is built above the Badami fort and overlooks the beautiful Agastya Lake. This temple is the oldest in Badami and was built during the 6th century AD. The views from the temple are marvelous and must be visited.

The once blooming and majestic capital of the Chalukya Kingdom, Badami is now a great tourist attraction in Karnataka . The various archeological findings and monuments that date back to the era of the Majestic kingdom are a must visit.

Sightseeing in Badami – Places to visit in Badami

This article is in continuation to a previous one and a part of my complete Hampi and Badami trip log. After spending 2 days in Hampi, our third day was spent sightseeing in Badami. Early in the morning, we paid a visit to Badami Cave temples and came back to the hotel for breakfast.

The plan was to start again after breakfast, see the places to visit in Badami, and be on our way to Aihole. To read the previous part of the post, please click on the links below.

We started from KSTDC Hotel Maurya Chalukya around 10 am after having breakfast.

Our first destination was Malegitti Shivalaya. The approach road from NH267 for this temple as well as other attractions is in very bad condition. The roads are narrow, through the marketplace and densely populated area and without proper direction and full of potholes.

We missed one turn and reached a dead-end reversing the car there was a hellish task. Finally, after a lot of effort, we managed to reach the base of Malagatti Shivalaya. There was some open space where we parked our car. There was no proper parking lot. By that time, almost half an hour had gone.

Malegitti Shivalaya

From the place of parking, it is required to climb up using stone-cut steps to visit the temple. It is perched on a rock outcrop.

On the architrave is a relief of seated Sun-God riding on a chariot drawn by seven horses. A relief accommodated in the vestibule medallion containing Vishnu riding on a Garuda. The entrance of the hall is flanked by deep niches that contain sword-bearing door-guardians Dinda and Pingala.

In elevation, the temple comprises of a typical Dravidian basement with emphasis on high Kantha (Neck), walls with Kudya-Stambhas (thin pillar reliefs), and Kapota (Cornice) topped by Hara (Parapet). The sanctuary’s superstructure is comprised of the dwarfed first storey, complete with parapet.

The Griva (Neck) is capped by an octagonal Shikhara (Dome). Four corners miniature Kutas hide the neck part. The Stupi (Pot-final) is missing. The niches of the exterior of the hall accommodate beautiful figures of standing Shiva attended by ascetic devotees (south) and standing Vishnu attended by Kaumodaki (Gada or Mace personified as a lady) and Garuda.

Both show some features typical of late Gupta sculptures-style noticed in 6th Century CE in the Malava region in Northern India.

It took around 30 minutes to complete the visit to Malagatti Shivalaya.

Badami Fort, Lower Shivalaya, and Upper Shivalaya

Our next destinations were Badami Fort, Lower Shivalaya, and Upper Shivalaya. There is a narrow road in that direction from where we parked our car. However, I did not get the courage to take the road.

So, we came back to NH367 and tried to find out the right approach road from the highway. But that did not work and we finally came back to the parking lot of Cave temples and decided to go to the other attractions from there on foot.

Most of the attractions of Badami are around Agastya Lake. Therefore, one full round of Agastya Lake will enable you to cover most of the attractions.

Badami cave temples are on a rock on the southern bank of the lake. Badami Fort, lower Shivalaya, and Upper Shivalaya are on a rock on the northern bank of the lake. There were shanties at the western bank of the lake and there was no proper road for going from the southern bank to the northern bank. Somehow, we managed to reach the northern bank making our way through the shanties.

At the base of the northern rock, there is a museum. We decided to give it a pass and started our trek passing through a huge entrance gate.

There is a stepped path for going to the top of the northern rock. The path is flanked by huge orange-red rocks with mysterious narrow and deep clefts.

After some time, we crossed another gate.

Lower Shivalaya

After crossing the gate, the road bifurcates. The left branch goes to lower Shivalaya. The right branch continues to ascend towards upper Shivalaya and Badami fort.

The lower Shivalaya, perched on a high point of the protruding rock overlooking the town, dates from the 6th Century CE. It represents a Dravidian-style temple of the early phase of Chalukyas of Badami and apparently owes its creation to royal patronage.

Originally it comprised of a small porch, a hall, and a double-walled sanctuary with an ambulatory around. Now only the inner sanctuary part of the structure exists.

From the lower Shivalaya, the upper Shivalaya is visible at a height.

Another old structure is visible at the same height as the lower Shivalaya but it is not accessible.

Upper Shivalaya

After visiting the lower Shivalaya, we took the other branch towards the fort and upper Shivalaya. After walking a few hundred meters, to the left, there is a cleft that leads to the huge circular bastion which is visible from all over Badami.

Malegitti Shivalaya is visible from there with Badami town as the backdrop. We came back to the main path and crossed another gate. After this gate, the path becomes really narrow.

After crossing those narrow pathways, we finally reached the flat hilltop.

The original image of upper Shivalaya is lost. As Vaishnava themes are carved on its outer wall, it is a Vaishnava temple. There are images of Narsimha killing demon Hiranyakashyapu on the northern wall, Govardhan Giri-Dhari on the Southern wall, and Kaliyadamana on the western wall.

On the top, we saw some 18th CE rectangular underground chambers which are known as Tipu’s treasury.

There are two conical structures made of rubbles, which could be granaries.

Lower Shivalaya, with Badami town as the backdrop, and Agastya Lake are visible from the top.

After spending some time there, we started coming down.

History of Badami

Badami, also known as Vatapi, was the capital of Chalukyas (6th – 8th AD) which extended at the time of Pulikesin II from Kanchi in Tamilnad to the banks of Narmada and from Odissa to the West coast.

After a setback for a while owing to the attacks from Pallavas under Narshimha Varman I, the Chalukyas regained their territory gave impetus to the revival of Hindu religion and art.

At this time, because of the scenic beauty and natural defiance provided by the majestically standing rock surrounding Agastya lake, they shifted their capital from Aihole to Badami and built a fort on the flat top of the northern rock which used to be the residence of the Chalukyan kings.

Today, other than those three gates, parts of the temples, remnants of broken fort walls, nothing exist. The grandeur of the past has succumbed to the fury of time.

Mallikarjuna Temple

After coming down from the northern rock, we started walking towards the east for the Bhutanatha group of temples, the next place on our list of sightseeing in Badami. On the way, we crossed Mallikarjuna temple. It belongs to a later period and it was built during the reign of the Western Chalukyas.

Bhutanatha group of temples is on the eastern bank of the Agastya lake. The Bhutanatha group of temples comprises a bunch of sandstone temples, all dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This group of temples came under the influence of Jains for a period of time. Later, it was taken over by the Lingayats who installed a Shiva Linga in the shrine and a Nandi in front.

After watching the Bhutanatha group of temples, we headed towards the parking lot along the southern bank of the lake. It was quarter to 1 pm then and was the time to go back to the hotel for lunch.
