Hayling Island

It’s not surprising that windsurfing was invented on Hayling Island in Hampshire. The island is bordered by both Chichester and Langstone harbours and also has three miles of beaches along its seafront on the Solent.

Situated south of Havant in Hampshire between Portsmouth and Emsworth, Hayling Island has always appealed to holiday makers and families and retains all the attractions of a traditional seaside resort.

Things to do in Hayling Island

Hayling Island’s three main beaches have won both the European Blue Flag and the Keep Britain Tidy Group Seaside Award Flag and are greatly enjoyed by the bucket and spade brigade as well as walkers and nature lovers.

Children and young people will never be short of things to do on Hayling Island and will love the roller coaster rides at the Funland amusement park while the East Hayling Light Railway offers a ten-minute train ride along the seafront.

Staunton Country Park is a gem just outside of Havant, with amazing gardens, a tropical glass house and an Amazonian water lily. Fun for all the family can be found on the ornamental farm with the friendly farmyard animals.

The pretty market town of Emsworth is nestled on Hampshire's border within 10 minutes drive of Hayling Island. It's a delightful town with narrow streets, a harbourside, charming pubs, restaurants and specialist shops.

Hayling Island Tourist Information

Two dogs on the beach at Hayling Island

Hayling Island is located between Portsmouth and Emsworth near the Hampshire border with Sussex. It is linked to the mainland by a road bridge that takes you over Langstone Harbour. To the east is Chichester Harbour – making Hayling Island an ideal location for sailing, windsurfing, power boating, jet skiing, kitesurfing and a range of other watersports. In fact one of Hayling Island’s claims to fame is as the birthplace of windsurfing and three miles of fantastic beaches feature around its coastline. Charter fishing boats or try your hand at a range of water-based activities including sailing, yachting and jet ski at Langstone Harbour. Wildlife lovers won’t want to miss a tour of West Hayling Nature Reserve and you can head off on The Hayling Billy Trail, a five mile round trip of the Island.

North Hayling

The northern part of Hayling Island is quieter and contains many of the island’s historic sites. For great views of Chichester Harbour, the Royal Oak pub on the north side of the Hayling Road Bridge is a popular spot. In the village of North Hayling, St Peter’s Church, built in 1140, is a fine example of a typical village church of the Norman period. The three bells are said to be the oldest in England with the tenor bell dating from around 1350 and cast by the Whitechapel Foundry. Traditionally planted yews surround the church and one is said to be at least 800 years old.

West Hayling Nature Reserve

West Hayling Nature Reserve is on the north eastern side of Langstone Harbour. It used to be known as the Oysterbeds as the man-made beds were dug to farm oysters. The farming of oysters on the shores of Hayling dates back to the Roman period. When it ceased the beds became redundant but it wasn’t long before wildlife started taking them over. Conservation work has created saline lagoons, an island and the mud at low tide provides important food resources for a range of birds including geese, waders and ducks. The island provides breeding habitats for common and little terns, black headed gulls, ringed plovers and oystercatchers. The Hayling Billy Trail brings you to the reserve where you can pick up a circular walk alongside the lagoons.

Beach Huts on Hayling Island

Langstone Harbour

Langstone Harbour lies between Hayling Island and Portsmouth. It is popular for recreational watersports including yachting, dinghy sailing, motor cruising, windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and canoeing. Licences and permits are required for water skiing and jet skiing – available from the Langstone Harbour Board. Langstone Harbour is also an important wildlife site and a third of the harbour is owned and managed by the RSPB. The mudflats, saltmarsh and shingle ridges provide fantastic habitat for terns, gulls and wading birds such as dunlin, grey plover, black-tailed godwit, redshank and ringed plover. Farlington Marshes Local Nature Reserve consists of low lying coastal grazing marsh that juts out into Langstone Harbour making it an excellent place to do a spot of birdwatching.

Not only can you see the birds mentioned above but a variety of rarer migrants have been spotted here including various species of sandpiper, long-billed dowitcher, marsh sandpiper and lesser yellowlegs and temminck’s stint. Watersports and wildlife come together in the harbour, so to ensure a balance parts of the harbour are restricted to boat traffic. There is also a speed limit of 10 knots in the harbour and restrictions on some activities.

The Hayling Billy Trail

The Hayling Billy Trail is an off-road walking and cycle trail that follows the Old Hayling Railway line from Havant to Hayling. It stretches the length of Hayling Island and is a five mile round trip giving you some fantastic views of Langstone Harbour. The trail is also open to horseriders as well.

  • The Station Theatre

The Station Theatre is arguably one of the most comfortable and well equipped amateur run theatres on the south coast. Located at the end of the Billy Trail, this spacious theatre was created by converting an old goods shed that was abandoned when the railway line was removed in the 1960s. Hayling Island Amateur Dramatic Society (HIADS) run the theatre and along with other amateur and professional organisations put on a variety of plays, films and music events throughout the year. Parking and a licensed bar are onsite.

Where to Stay

Hayling Island has a variety of accommodation options. Stay in one of the holiday parks with all-inclusive onsite entertainment and leisure facilities perfect for families. Friendly independent hotels sit around Langstone harbour or choose a cosy B&B perfect for that wildlife watching weekend or romantic escape.

  • Location: Hampshire
  • Size: 3000 ha
  • Terrain: Roads and lanes
  • Access: Road bridge
  • Height gain: 79 metre
  • Map: OS Explorer OL8
  • Starting point: Car park at north end of island just after bridge (GR 720 039)

There are plenty of good stops for food and drink. Here’s a few of our favourites around the route:

  • Madhatters Tearoom – good for breakfast and lunch, very welcoming and serves good coffee.
  • The Maypole Inn – a lovely, friendly, traditional pub with great food. What more can we say.
  • Northney Farm Tearooms – this is a proper working farm where in addition to great home-made food you can buy fresh milk and eggs.
  • Salt Shack Cafe – great location on the north shore overlooking Northney Marina and Chichester Harbour. Try its BBQ’d breakfasts and enjoy its great vibe.
  • Meadow Farm Nursery Tea Rooms – love their tagline ‘our plants are grown in our glasshouse and our cakes are baked in our bakehouse’. Great tea and cakes.

Linked to the south coast at Havant by a road bridge, Hayling Island has all the attractions of a traditional seaside holiday yet has miles of unspoilt coastline and countryside. Its west coast is tranquil with views across the nature-filled Langstone Harbour and is easily walked or cycled along the Hayling Billy Trail. The south coast is the most built up area. Expect funfairs, kiss-me-quick and fish and chips. The south east corner is quieter though and home to the island’s vast shingle beach, a mecca for windsurfers which is unsurprising as the sport was invented on this island. Nearby, the grasslands of Sinah Common are stacked with military history. Most of the west coast is indented by silent creeks and is largely the preserve of sailing clubs, farmed land and nature.

  • BBQ breakfast at Salt Shack cafe
  • Birds galore in Langstone Harbour
  • Kite-surfing mecca on the south shore
  • Cycle the historic Hayling Billy Trail

The route uses the Hayling Billy Trail to travel down the tranquil west side of the island alongside the important nature reserve of Langstone Harbour. It then explores the south western tip with options to cross on the ferry to Portsea or continue around Hayling’s south shore along beach tracks (mountain/hybrid bikes), the sea front and the promenade. The route goes through the houses a bit then turns north on the busy main road before branching off along the idyllic Yew Tree Lane through farmland to rejoin the coast at Langstone Bridge. There are great views and seascapes throughout.

Whatever direction you are coming from head for the A27/M27 South Coast road. Leave the A27 at the Havant/Hayling Island exit and head South on to the A3023 which takes you on to Hayling Island. Road access to Hayling Island is through a single road bridge on the A3023 (which can be busy during peak times, especially during the summer).

We continuously find new islands, rivers, lochs, canals and coast to walk, SUP and swim in and meet plenty of great folks along the way. Reduced opening hours for Beachlands tourist office

Posted by hibot | News

With rising temperatures plentiful sunshine and abundant blue skies many head for the shingle shores of Hayling Island to relax soak up some rays dip a toe and enjoy the coastal atmosphere. During these times visitors require information about the local area.

Havant Borough Council recently took the decision to close the visitor information centre at Beachlands during weekends a situation that has prompted wide criticism. HBC defended their action stating that fewer customers used the information centre during Saturdays and Sundays last year. Dawn Adey marketing and customer relations service manager said: Weekend opening hours have changed as we were experiencing low attendance at weekends during 2013.

Marshall Hill one of Funland Amusement Parks owners criticised the new timetable with comments published in the Hayling Islander: Its ridiculous to stop providing visitor information at weekends. If the council needs to save money the centre should be closed at quiet times not during busy weekends in the tourist season. Hayling Seaside Railways Bob Hancock also added: We should support the tourist industry which brings about 60m per year into the borough.

Councillor Andy Lenaghan said a meeting has been arranged after Haylings Conservatives voiced concerns over the new opening hours.

Peak season opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and closed Saturdays Sundays and bank holidays. July 28-Spetmeber 6 will see the office open from 9am until noon on Saturday.
