Astounding Places To Explore On Your Journey From Mysore To Coorg

A trip to Coorg from Mysore! Isn’t it amazing to hear that? Yes, it is super thrilling. I had recently been on a Mysore-Coorg road trip with my friends and guess what? It turned out to be one of my all-time favorite journeys. Since I was traveling with my friends, we made certain that no detail was overlooked and that all was in order. Road trips are always amazing that too with friends, no doubt it was incredible.

Here, I will share some of the places we got to explore on our way to Coorg. But before that, let me give a detailed view of traveling from Mysore to Coorg. 

A road trip from Mysore to Coorg was undeniably beautiful. This marvellous Scotland of India is located at 1525 meters above sea level on the picturesque Western Ghats. Coorg offers excellent weather, gorgeous views, and acres of coffee plantations. Coorg has a variety of excursions to fit the whims of adventurers.

On the other hand, Mysore is known for its majestic monuments, exquisite sculptures, sacred temples, and palaces. Mysore is also known for its lush gardens and scenic mountains, in addition to its art treasures.

When is the Best Time to go?

Coorg is a great place to visit all year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations, particularly for nature lovers. The lush greenery and panoramic views of Coorg come alive during the monsoon season. Coorg receives a lot of rain from June to September. 

Even so, it has its own appeal. Coorg is best visited between October and Jan when there are many opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The destination’s picturesque appeal is at its peak in March and April.

Distance   from Mysore

The gap between Mysore and Coorg is about 120 kilometres and takes about 2.5 hours to travel. Coorg is in Karnataka’s southwest corner, on the Kerala frontier. I was astounded by its elegance because I had never expected it to be so stunning.

How to get there?

Coorg is easily accessible by car, bike, or bus. As beautiful as Coorg and its surroundings are, traveling to Coorg via its scenic routes is an enjoyable part of the journey.

The roads are generally smooth and well-maintained, which is why most visitors choose to travel by car or taxi. Yet, private and government buses (KSRTC) run frequently from Mysore and Coorg at affordable rates. The distance between Mysore and Coorg is 120 kilometers (2 hours and 45 minutes), but depending on which route you take, it could take up to 3-4 hours. 

Places we Explored on our Journey to Coorg

I suggest that you spend at least a couple of days in this sort of paradise. Since it was a road trip the places were so far from each other, we made sure to explore every bit of it on the way. 

It was a trip of 3 days. Along the way, we explored several places which left us mesmerized. Let me give a beautiful picture of those places that you can also travel on your way to Coorg.   Since we took up the Kushalnagara route these were some of the Popular places we got to explore on our way to Coorg

1. Bhagamandala Temple

The Bhagandeshwara Temple is located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, in the town of Bhagamandala.

The confluence of three rivers, Kanike, Cauvery, and Sujyothi, that are spiritually uplifting makes the temple a popular tourist destination. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is built in the Kerala style of architecture. It is a must-see place for its sacred appeal.

Cauvery Nisargadhama, Dubare, Chinnathappa temple, and Talacauvery are some of the places and temples to visit along with the Bhagamandala temple.

Trekking is another activity available in the village. Mt. Thavoor is a mountain peak that overlooks Bhagamandala and provides an excellent trekking path with a stunning view of the Shola.

2. Coffee Plantations

After the temple tour we headed to view the beautiful Madikeri coffee plantations and estates lining the Kushalnagara road. Our road from Mysore took us past Ramanagaram’s boulder-like hillocks. 

The town’s claim to fame is that these hills were used to film the blockbuster Sholay. Hillocks that might have been Gabbar and his men’s den soon gave way to riverbanks, and as we approached Coorg, the outside view was mostly of rain-soaked bamboo trees.

Since Bylakuppe, India’s second-largest Tibetan settlement, is right next door, Kushalnagara was buzzing with activity. 

The roads seemed to be dividing lines between the coffee plantations. The temperature had dropped dramatically. The evening mist had settled on the treetops when we arrived at our destination.

As we got closer to Kirudale and the planters camp, which was unabashedly breath-taking, we were awestruck. We got to walk through the jungle, up to natural steps, over a bridge that looked like a ladder, and down small walkways and paths.

3. Abbey Falls

We travelled to abbey falls, also known as Abbi Falls, after experiencing the scenic beauty of coffee plantations, a beautiful waterfall located in the Western Ghats of Coorg. The falls are nestled among lush landscapes and coffee plantations, about 8 kilometres from Madikeri Bus Station. Abbey Falls is surrounded by lush vegetation and vast coffee plantations. Although getting to Abbey Falls takes a bit of a walk, the route is well-marked and requires no professional assistance.

Another thing to remember while visiting Abbey Falls is that the lush green woods appear beautiful on the outside, but they are home to some dangerous wildlife. I am not talking about flesh-eating tigers here. The region does, however, have a high concentration of leeches. You can become a victim if adequate precautions are not taken. 

However, the best time to visit Abbey Falls is right after the monsoon season has passed through Karnataka state. Visitors can see the waterfall from a height of 21 meters. Although the falls are open to visitors all year, visiting at other times may leave you disappointed because the falls have little water flowing through them during the rest of the year due to lower water levels. 

The falls are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

4. Dubare Elephant Camp

The desire to discover new things was contagious among us. Around 14 kilometres from Kushalnagara, we arrived at Dubare elephant camp, a refreshing spot. One can enjoy activities like elephant swimming, jeep safaris, and river rafting here. The Dubare Elephant Camp near Coorg allows tourists to get up close and personal with elephants. 

The camp offers a wide range of activities to keep you occupied and engaged during your stay. The camp’s raw natural atmosphere is perfect for forming friendships with elephants.

During their stay at the camp, visitors can give scrub baths to elephants and receive a leaflet with fascinating details about elephants. In addition to feeding and bathing elephants, visitors can watch them being trained by seasoned mahouts.

At the camp, you can also go river rafting.

Timings-9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (As elephants are usually only appeared at this time.) 

5. Namdroling Tibetan Monastery

We moved to this monastery in Bylakuppe, which has a nunnery, souvenir shops, and a magnificent Golden Temple that was relaxing and refreshing after enjoying a variety of activities at Dubare.

Bylakuppe has several monasteries to visit. Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple in the region, is the most well-known. 

If you’re willing to go a little farther off the beaten road, the nearby Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is equally stunning and much quieter. It’s a long journey to get to Bylakuppe. You must first travel to Kushalnagara, a sleepy town about 6 kilometres from Bylakuppe. While in Bylakuppe, eat some delicious Tibetan food like thukpa (noodle soup) and momos (dumplings). 

If you walk out of Namdroling and straight down the road for 5-10 minutes, you’ll find a plethora of small, inexpensive Tibetan restaurants. Of course, look for the ones with the most monks inside. You can have a different experience here.

6. Nisargadhama Forest

After a relaxing visit to the temple, we arrived at my favorite place. The place is situated in Gonikoppal on the way to Coorg, the forest is called Nisargadhama. Even if you’re taking the Kushalnagara road, you can stop by here.

Tourists will enjoy a picnic here because of the scenic beauty. A rope bridge of 90 meters links you to an island with cottages and watchtowers. Nisargadhama is a beautiful island off the state highway, a few kilometres from Kushalnagara, that can be reached by walking across a hanging bridge and is surrounded by the Cauvery river.

The lush vegetation of dense bamboo groves adds to the beauty. Some of the attractions include elephant rides, zip-lining, boating, a deer park, and a children’s park. 

The hours of operation for Kaveri Nisargadhama Forest Park are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every day of the week, it is available.

These are some of the best places we got to explore from Mysore to Coorg. These places will provide you with plenty of excitement, adventure, harmony, and, most importantly, pure joy! Without further ado, you should begin preparing for these trips.  In the end, it was a beautiful and dramatic journey. Without our vehicle, we would not have been able to visit so many locations. Mysore Coorg Ooty Road Trip – How to Plan & What to See

I recently completed a Mysore Coorg Ooty Road Trip and it turned out to be one of the most favorite trips of my life. After all, it was a family trip. I had planned everything and booked everything in advance. Since I was traveling with my family, I made sure to leave no stone unturned and everything was pitch-perfect.

It was a long trip of almost 10 days. Along the way, I experienced a number of things and food and historic places, etc. The route that was planned was Bangalore >Mysore >Coorg >Ooty> Bangalore >Home. It was one of a kind of a trip. It was not exactly a road trip, but since the places were so far from each other, we made sure to explore every bit of a place on the way. In the post below, I will share some of the things I learned about visiting Mysore, Coorg and Ooty that can be of help to others.

How to Reach Bangalore?

The first part of our plan was to get to Bangalore and move to Mysore from there. This was really the easy part. You can either reach Bangalore via Airport or Train. Make sure to book your hotel somewhere in the city so that your transportation becomes easier for the next destination.

We stayed in Bangalore for a Day so that we get prepped up for what the next day had for us.

Best Time to Visit Mysore Coorg Ooty

The best time to plan a trip here would be during the winter season, from December till February. Monsoons and Summers are not the best seasons to visit these places as It would be too hot and heavy rainfall could spoil the trip. Now let us take a look at all these destinations one by one and I will explain what you should be doing here as a tourist.

Mysore is known as the city of palaces. The city was earlier the capital of the Wodeyar rulers who were great patrons of art and culture. Once you explore the palaces and architecture you will see the rich heritage of the city. Apart from that, the city is also known for sandalwood products and the Dasara festival (Navaratri) held every year. Make sure to buy Authentic Sandalwood products from the local market.

We visited the Mysore Palace. I was spellbound. It was an excellent combination of Dravidian, Indo-Saracenic, Oriental and Roman styles of architecture. The Maharaja’s Palace is a beautiful three storied stone building of fine gray granite and rich pink marble domes.  Overlooking this structure is a huge tower whose domes were painted in gold. Photography is strictly prohibited.

Next on the list was Mysuru Zoo. It was started by Chamarajendra Wadiyar X initially as a private Zoo. The Zoo has about 1000s animals. Mysuru Zoo was the first in the country to obtain Gorillas and Penguins. Even though, now there were no big animals in the zoo, we still enjoyed being there.

Next on the list was the Brindavan Garden. The Brindavan Gardens were located just below one of the dams, often described as the best example of illuminated terrace gardens in the country.

Mysore to Coorg

The distance from Mysore to Coorg is about 120 km and can be covered in approximately 2.5 hrs. Coorg is located in the south-west part of Karnataka, bordering Kerala. Coorg is India’s famous travel destination and has been called the Scotland of India by the British. It is sometimes also referred to as the Kashmir of South India. I was awestruck with its beauty as I had never imagined it to be so beautiful. The natural beauty of the region, the warmth of its people, the culture and the food are the major attractions that draw people to Coorg.

What to see in Coorg

The first place to see in Coorg was the Tibetan Golden Temple near Bailkoppa. This Tibetan Temple and the settlement here was the second largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet. As soon as we reached the place, we saw so many Tibetans. There were the famous Tibetan flags in the place. After asking my driver I came to know that there are over 7,000 monks and students at the Tibetan monastery.

The Buddhist Monastery was re-built here in 1972. The 40 ft tall golden Buddha statue was the major attraction of Bailkoppa. The statues of Buddha and Amitayus are notable ones. The walls of the temples and the institutions were decorated with colorful paintings depicting gods and demons from Tibetan Buddhist mythology. The altar was decorated with flowers, candles and incense sticks.

Apart from the calm and peaceful surroundings, there was a Tibetan market near the temples that sold traditional Tibetan items like costumes, statues, carpets, jewelry, etc.

In the evening we visited the Raja’s Seat or the Seat of the King. The Raja’s seat is a famous sunset point in Madikeri. In fact, it used to be once the platform from which the kings of Kodagu used to enjoy glorious sunsets. The place got its name as it was the favorite recreational place for the king. Raja’s seat stands inside an amazing garden of seasonal flowers and musical fountains. Today it is a famous destination of Madikeri which is visited by tourists throughout the year.

Madikeri Fort and Abbey Falls

Next on the list was, TheMadikeri Fort. It has an intriguing historical past. It was initially built of mud and later replaced with the present structure by Tipu Sultan. The fort also holds some remains of the British era, including a vintage clock tower. Sunsets viewed from the fort are simply beautiful.

Abbey falls is one of the most viewed attractions in Coorg.  The picturesque view of the fall will surely take your breath away. It will also provide you with quite a few photographic moments. The waterfall comes down from a height of around 50 feet and provides a superb vista. The monsoon season, from June to September, is a great time to visit Abbey Falls. This is when the water levels are at their highest and most powerful.

Coorg to Ooty

Oots is located at a distance of about 240 km from Coorg and can be reached in approximately 5.5 hrs. Ooty is popularly called as “The Queen of Hill Stations”. It mixes up Indian bustle with lovely parks and gardens and charming Raj-era bungalows.

Places to visit in Ooty and Things to Do

Sightseeing the Botanical Garden will be the first and one of the most popular things to do here. Ooty Botanical Garden is divided into six areas, which include the Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries. As soon as we reached there, all we could see was a riot of colors. A wide range of spreading flower beds was an intrinsic part of Ooty Botanical Gardens. It is also a popular haunt for tourists and offers a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Go for Boating in Ooty Lake

There were two kinds of boats available; pedal and motorboats. Adjacent to the lake there are a lot of activities such as Toy train ride, 3-D shows, Tora-Tora ride & also ponies were available for rides.

The Very Beautiful Centenary Rose Garden

This Rose garden is not like any other garden. It is in fact laid on huge acres of land. This garden is beautifully laid out in terraces with rose, pergolas and rose creepers. I have seen all the types, size and colors of roses here. It has the largest collections of roses in the country. Around 3600 varieties of roses are found here, like Hybrid Tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda, Ramblers, roses of unusual colors like black, yellow, green, white and many more varieties that will captivate your senses.

Our hotel was located at the top and the roads were all about Hairpin turns and dives. I encountered around 36 Hairpins and bend curves on the way. It was both fascinating and a bit scary as well.

The Tea Factory

As soon as we entered the vicinity, we could smell everything Tea. Of course, after all, it was The Tea Factory. It has a two-story building that had tea leaves driers on the second floor, while the walls are splattered with the history of tea and the art of tea-making via paintings and more. You can buy varieties of Tea from there. You can also see the whole process of Tea Making and taste some of the significant Tea. We bought a few Tea Packets from there.

Catch a Landscape view of Coimbatore

The Doddabetta Peak stands at height of 2,623 meters. It is the highest point in the district, offering a bird’s eye view of the whole of Coimbatore and the adjoining areas around it. One of the most remarkable things about Doddabetta is its top summit, which makes you see and wonder in amazement. The area around the peak is a reserved forest and is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna.

What can you buy in Mysore Coorg Ooty

  • The first item would be Coffee. The organic unadulterated coffee grown in Coorg should be there at the top of your shopping list.

In the end, it was surely a lovely and dramatic trip. It would not have been possible to cover so many places had it not been by our own car. Mysore and Coorg- two cities of Karnataka surrounded by western ghats has something to offer to everyone and make India truly incredible.

Hey everyone, this my first travel blog, don’t know how it is going to end up. Wish me luck, I have already started writing and feeling nervous. Well it’s about a trip I planned with my sister and her husband (jiju). We planned a trip starting from Mysore to Coorg to Ooty. However, later finalizing the first two.

We left for Mysore from Bangalore at 4 am. It took 3 hours to reach Mysore by train.

About Mysuru-

Mysuru sits in Deccan plateau of India. It is known as one of the cleanest city of India. According to hindu mythology, Mysuru got it’s name from Mahisa which means buffalo. Mahisasur, a demon once ruled that place calling that place Mahisapura/ Mahisuru. He was killed by Goddess Chamundeshwari on Chamundi hills. Later British called this place Mysore in their accent and Mysuru in local language that is Kannada. It is the second largest city in Karnataka and attracts millions of tourists every year.

Places I visited

1. Chamundi Hills/ Chamundeshwari Temple

First on the list was Chamundidevi temple. Chamundi Hills occcupies the south eastern part of the city. It is located 13 kms from the city. Chamundi hills is a true paradise, forests rich in flora and fauna, a calm spell of good weather and magnificient temple constructed in Dravidian style architecture. The goddess Chamundeshwari is one of the fifty one shakti peeths of the world or powerful energy centres.

2. Mysore Palace

Located in the middle of the city, a regal palace that will definitely leave you awestruck. It’s lavish and grand appearance is what makes it the second most visited place after Taj Mahal in India. It is the official residence of Wadiyar dyansty.

Interesting fact – The architechture of this palace is a union of Hindu, Mughal, Rajput and Gothic styles.

3. Brindavan Gardens –

A long drive from Mysore to Mandya district, and you reach Bridavan gardens is attached to Krishana Raja Sagara (KRS) gravity dam built across river Cauvery, which is about 130 feet and the main source of water to nearby districts including Mysuru. It’s an amazing view to witness in the evening. Colored musical fountains are a real treat. Boating is also an option, however, the services can be improved. It is a well-maintained and beautiful garden.

Next day in the morning we boarded bus and left for Coorg. It is 108 kms from Mysuru and took 3 hours to reach.

About Coorg

Coorg- In the clouds, amidst western ghats. The highway from Mysore to Coorg passes through wild forests. If you love greenery, dense forests, misty landscapes, then coorg is perfect escape. Coorg is situated on the eastern slopes of western ghats and is known as Scotland of India .The tiny districts is one of the largest producer of coffee. Apart from coffee, Coorg is rich in natural resources and spice plantation.

Make sure you book a home stay. There are several home stays in Coorg that offers cozy living and nice lifestyle. We stayed in Muthu’s Home Stay in Madikeri (district capital).

Places I visited-

1. Namdroling Monastery-

Mini Tibet in south India known as Namdroling Monastery located in Bylakuppe is a home for 3,000 lamas and monks and nuns. There are 3 prayer halls/temples. One of which is also called Golden temple because of gold coated Buddha statues which is imposing and extravagant. It is also a religious college. Their main occupation is farming.

We shopped few incense (originally made by people living there) and good luck flags. Beside,farming and incense, they also make carpets. Lifestyle over there reflects the true culture of Tibetans.

Fact– It is built on the land given to Tibetan refugees by the Government of Indian in 1963.

2. Abbey Falls

WOW! Beautiful! Isn’t it?? Up on the hills, amidst dense forest, there goes a way that leads you to splendid waterfalls known as Abbey falls. As I visited this place during the monsoon, I can definitely assure that it is the best time to visit this place because it’s windy and rainy, the water and it’s flow is more, making the place totally picturesque.

3. Raja’s seat-

Raja’s seat is located in Madikeri is a beautiful garden with colorful flowers. I fell for this place instantly. People visit this place for amazing view of sunrise and sunset behind the mountains. However, visiting this place in rainy season, I witnessed a beautiful and breath-taking view of entire mist covered area and green mountains beyond the valley. I could have literally spent my entire night over there.

It was raining heavily in Coorg so we could not cover many places. So I would suggest you all not to travel in monsoon. Same evening we did Bus directly for Bangalore and came back home by 1 am. It took like 6 hours approx.

Overall it was an amazing experience. South India is like heaven, so clean, royal and beautiful.

In this route, you will trek along dense Shola forest where you may come across the wild animals and birds and feast your eyes on the beautiful panorama at a distance. Trekkers usually take the Somwarpet route to climb up to the summit of the Kumara Parvath and the Kukke Subramanya route to descend.History of Kumara Parvatha There are a number of folklores that go round this pristine religious and scenic destination of Karnataka and each of them ushers immense curiosity among the believers to undertake an arduous journey up to the summit. According to the popular faith, Lord Kumaraswamy (Subramanya) killed demons like Padmasura and Tarakasura and was crowned as the king atop the Kumara Parvatha.The Lord washed his lethal weapon in the nearby river and hence the name Dharma Teertha. Indra, the king of the gods being pleased by the valour of Kumaraswamy asked for his hand in marriage with his daughter Devasena. The marriage between Lord Kumaraswamy and Devasena took place on the bank of Kumaradhara.Another story depicts Vasuki, the divine serpent was once threatened by Garuda (mount of Lord Vishnu/Venkateshwara). In order to save himself from the clutches of Garuda, Vasuki performed rigorous worship in the caves of Kukke Subramanya temple. There are plenty of restaurants and Coffee Shops between Ramanagara and Maddur. Further it thins out, though there are some big ones like Empre, Adiga's, Right-O till you hit Mysore.

Skipping the options inside Mysore city, as you would be taking one of the two bypasses around Myosre city. Otherwise Mysore city obviously have a great number of choices....

Between Mysore and Coorg, decent places (read as the one with good food and hygienic restrooms) are few and far. Of course you'll see two more CCDs and Cafe Coorg in the last 100km lap to Coorg from Mysore.

Listing is in the order you'll see from Bangalore (starting from Ramanagara) to Coorg (Madikeri)

  • Kadamba : Immediately after you exit NICE Road (Mysore road exit). High class authentic vegetarian restaurant.
  • A2B : Vegetation outlet. Before Bidadi town. Watchout for the narrow entrance. This place has ample parking space.
  • Kamat Lokaruchi : Near Janapada Loka Folk museum. Will appear about 3 km after Ramanagara on your right. Upscale vegetarian dishes. Expect a long wait to get seats.
  • Indradhanush, KFC, CCD & Milestone 67: All in the same forecourt like tree lined campus. Very spacious. Multiple food themes in one location.
  • Shivalli MTR: Great veg fare. Next to the Indradhanush complex. Also there's an organic shop (Organic Mandya) in the same compound.
  • Kamat Upachar: Less busy than the Kamat Lokaruchi, any day any time. That doesn't mean the food is not up to the mark as the previous.
  • Vaishali : A little ahead of Kamat Upachar. Great place to try non-veg. Also serves good veg fares. Clean restrooms. Vary spacious. Kids would like to play with those pet bunnies, guinea pigs and the turkeys. Great looking interiors equally good exteriors.
  • McDonald & Cube Stop: Located inside a fuel station (Bharatpetroleum comply outlet ) compound on your left. Food, refueling & restrooms in one stop!
  • Empire: Top non-veg restaurant on the highway between Bangalore and Coorg. Exotic delicacies. The Tali meals is very popular. There is a tandoori grill. A favorite dinner stop, esp for those returning to Bangalore from Coorg & Mysore side. There is dining both inside and outside. Ample parking space. Empire is located jus before Maddur town on your right.
  • Adiga's : Nicely landscaped compound. High class Veg restaurant, just before you enter Maddur town.
  • Maddur Tiffany's : A busy restaurant in Maddur Town.
  • CCD: There two CCDs in Maddur and few km apart.
  • Bestin's Break : Coffee Shop in Maddur, on your right.
  • Amaravathi : This is located just before Mandya town.
  • White Orchid Resorts: This is a restaurant attached to the way side resort between Srirangapatna and Mysore. If you've taken the Srirangapatna-Yelwal route to bypass Mysore , you'll not pass this place.
  • Mysore City has many restaurants: Not listed here for the sake of simplicity. However a few are listed on the Ring Road and Hunsur Road.
  • Royal Inn: This is a upscale place on the junction of the Outer Ring Road and KRS Road. The multi storied hotel appear on your left as you cross the junction.
  • Golden Landmark Resort : A fabulous resort with an equally fabulous restaurant.Turn right on to the KRS Road as the Outer Ring Road crosses the KRS road. It's on your left about 500 meters from the junction. Drive into the property, the security guard will guide you the the restaurant location deep inside the resort. The buffet lunches is highly sought after. A very wooded compound with massive trees and great lawns add to the dining experience.
  • Cafe Coorg: At the junction of Hunsur bypass (SH88). You need to take the Hunsur bypass (right fork) to see this. If you are heading to Nagarhole, you'll go through Hunsur town and will miss this place.
  • CCD , Kampalapura: This is located about 15km from Hunsur bypass junction. A big relief joint in a very unexpected place for a CCD!
  • CCD, Kushal Nagar : Well you're almost at the door steps of Coorg country side. This CCD will appear on your left about 25km after the Kampalapura CCD. The outlet is tucked into coffee plantation, before you cross Kaveri and enter Kushalnagar town.

From the Kushal Nagar CCD, Madikeri town is about 30km away; Dubare Elephant Camp is 17km; Kaveri Nisargadhama 5km away ; Tibetan Golden Temple at Bylakuppe is 3km away;

Since determining the quality of a travel destination is an incredibly multifaceted and complex phenomenon, we established a three-pronged criteria based on some of the most oft-cited priorities for tourists when picking a travel destination; the criteria is premised on each place's cultural or historical significance (25 points), natural or architectural beauty (20 points), and popularity amongst tourists (15 points). We then proceeded to award each place a cumulative score according to the aforementioned criteria and selected 40 places which scored the highest points. Subsequently, we ranked each entry based on the total points scored, from lowest to highest. Where there was a tie, we broke it based on the cultural significance and natural or architectural beauty of the place.
