Visiting Cape Leveque & Dampier Peninsula, WA | 2023 Guide

Tucked away on Australia’s northwest coast, the Dampier Peninsula is a remote gem. The area boasts  untouched wilderness  with white sand beaches and crystal clear shimmering waters.

Cape Leveque , the top attraction of the region, is a natural wonder known for its vibrant red cliffs and traditional Aboriginal heritage. For those who once thought of Cape Leveque as an inaccessible destination, we have good news! The  road from Broome up Dampier Peninsula is now fully sealed , so pack your camping gear and start planning a Dampier Peninsula road trip!

About Dampier Peninsula & Cape Leveque

Cape Leveque is the main attraction of the Dampier Peninsula. The cape is famous for its pristine coast and wilderness. The local Indigenous people call the peninsula  Ardi , meaning “northeast. ” It’s an area that carries rich traditional history and one that has been sparsely inhabited with small remote communities for centuries.

The  beaches are unspoiled, trees full and natural, and wildlife is abundant . At one point, the peninsula was known as a far-off place with limited road access. Now, thanks to the newly sealed road, it’s an off-the-beaten-path destination for  nature and culture.

Where Is The Dampier Peninsula?

The Dampier Peninsula is located in northwest Australia along the coast of the Kimberley region in   Western Australia . It’s about  200 km north of Broome  and surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean.

How To Get There

Thanks to recent improvements, the main road up the Dampier Peninsula from Broome to Cape Leveque is now  fully sealed . There are still plenty of  off-shoots that require a high clearance 4WD vehicle,  but the main route is now accessible by any vehicle.

To get to Cape Leveque, follow Broome Road for 20 km before hitting the turn-off for Broome-Cape Leveque Road. The sealed all-weather road goes all the way to Cape Leveque and  takes about 2.5 hours.  Keep in mind that if you want to explore more of the unique landscape, you’ll need 4WD to reach places like Pender Bay and Middle Lagoon.

As far as road conditions go, we found the ride to be pretty smooth, but it still required careful driving. There are no overtaking lanes, and weather can be a big factor. Check out the Road Safety Commission’s   Guide to a Safe Drive  before embarking on your trip.

Be prepared for weather extremes in the Kimberley, particularly after the 2023 floods; delays can happen, so always have fresh water, food, and spare tires on hand. Stay safe!

Main Attractions & Things To Do In Dampier Peninsula

Cape leveque.

On the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula,  Cape Leveque is the main draw  for most visitors making this extraordinary trip. It’s no surprise that the gorgeous  untouched beaches  and  astonishing red cliffs  make a visit here a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The contrast between the vibrant cliffs, white sandy beach, and turquoise water is a feast for the eyes.

Swimming and snorkelling  are popular things to do in Cape Leveque. The cape is also home to a lighthouse and is a good spot for whale watching (during the season). Cape Leveque  fishing is world-class,  and locals invite you to explore the region and uncover its rich Aboriginal history.

Cape Leveque

Kooljaman At Cape Leveque

Kooljaman is a remote wilderness camp owned by local Indigenous Bardi Jawi communities. It’s famed for its stunning scenery and  eco-conscious beachfront campground . The award-winning place has accolades in Indigenous Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Unique Accommodation and Cultural Tourism. You can easily spend the day combing the beach before having dinner at  Raugi’s Restaurant  and catching the glorious  sunset over the bay .

Unfortunately, this place is closed now due to deteriorating infrastructure and the inability to cover redevelopment costs. Work on the Kooljaman Access Road, which was initially set to finish in September 2023, is on hold. The resort is closed, and the duration of closure remains uncertain. For the latest info on open communities and campgrounds, check with the Broome Visitor Centre  here .

Kooljaman, Cape Laveque

Brian’s Tagalong Tour

No trip to Kooljaman is complete without joining a cultural tour with unforgettable Bardi tour guide, Brian Lee. Brian’s Tagalong Tours of Hunter Creek sheds insight into traditional fishing and crabbing and culminates in a bush tucker lunch under the trees, then enjoy the scenic tours to Sunday Island. It’s the absolute best way to experience the Kimberley region from a local’s perspective.

Spearfishing with Bolo, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Located on the eastern side of the Dampier Peninsula,  Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm  is an  icon of Australia’s pearling industry . The bay’s tidal creeks and sandy banks are prime oyster territory along with the coast’s many points. Rocky shores line the bay, and the views of nearby islands are spectacular.

The farm operates several boat tours, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome and see Cable Beach light up in a vibrant display of colours from the water. We recommend their  Giant Whirlpool Tidal Boat tour  to experience the massive tides or journey to the unique waterfall reef. You can also dine at the Cygnet Bay Restaurant and have a taste of pearl meat or even harvest one in this  Behind-the-Scenes Tour & Live Harvest !

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Ardyaloon – One Arm Point

Immerse yourself in local Aboriginal communities in the remote town of Ardyaloon or One Arm Point. From here, you can watch the  giant tides  sweep over the Kimberley islands and explore a   Trochus Shells hatchery . The beaches are completely unspoiled, and the fishing is outstanding. The road is 4WD only, but the vibrant community is well worth a visit.

The Ardyaloon Hatchery Road (One Arm Point) construction and sealing were mostly finished in May 2023, but the final seal comes later this year. If you’re planning a 2024 visit, ensure the road’s fully open before heading to One Arm Point. Check for updates  here .

The Aboriginal Community of Lombadina welcomes visitors to explore their traditions and amazing locations on Thomas Bay. Soak in the beauty of white sand beaches and try your luck at spotting humpback whales in the distance. The Community hosts immersive   tours  to try your hand at  mud crabbing, kayaking, or traditional fishing .

As of May 2023, the Lombadina community is open seven days a week, including weekends from 9 am to 2 pm. If you plan to book a tour, remember to do it at least four days in advance to support the local communities.

Cape Leveque

Follow an unsealed road north of Beagle Bay, and you’ll arrive at Pender Bay, a  hotspot for humpback whales and remote camping.  Explore the 4WD tracks and incredible beaches surrounding this rugged stretch of coast. Stay at Whale Song Campground, and be sure to stop into   Kimberley Wild Gubinge  to taste a superfood plum unique to Australia.

Middle Lagoon

On the same 4WD track from Beagle Bay to Pender Bay, you’ll find Middle Lagoon, another stop for the  picturesque wilderness . Spend the day relaxing on the beach or dropping a line in the water. Camping and limited accommodation options are available at the low-impact coastal camp   Nature’s Hideaway .

View of the beach at Middle Lagoon

James Price Point

A stunning headland on the Kimberley coast, James Price Point is a  local favourite  for swimming and wild camping. Besides its astounding beauty, the area also has large cultural significance for Indigenous Communities. Walk the beaches, observe the wildlife, and keep your eyes peeled for  dinosaur footprints  in the intertidal zones!

James Price Point offers one of the most picturesque FREE wild campgrounds in all of Australia. Camping spots are scattered all along the point and are sprawled between the ocean and the stark red cliffs. You must be completely self-sufficient to camp here, as there are no facilities and no trees/bushes, so a portable loo is a must!

James Price Point, Cape Laveque, Dampier Peninsula

Stop into the Community of Beagle Bay to visit the home of the Nyul Nyul people. The Community’s famous  Sacred Heart Church  features a beautiful building with an  altar made from shells . It’s entirely handmade and adorned with white mother-of-pearl shells.

Where To Stay: Cape Leveque Camping And Dampier Peninsula Accommodation

Waking up to sweeping views of the red cliffs and sparkling ocean is what the Dampier Peninsula is all about. Keep in mind that  Cape Leveque accommodation is limited,  so be sure to plan ahead.

Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat

Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat is located at the eastern tip of the peninsula near One Arm Point and is a great  wilderness bush camp . We stayed here for a couple of nights during our visit and enjoyed the amazing ocean views and rugged landscape. Gumbanan offers basic campsites with toilet/shower facilities. Unfortunately, this gem is closed for the season from August 2023 until further notice.

Cape Leveque

Spending the night at a pearl farm is a pretty cool way to experience the coastal Kimberley region.  Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm  offers visitors 39 remote self-sufficient accommodations ranging from  campsites, caravan sites, to safari tents, it  is Australia’s oldest fully operational public pearl farm! Each site comes with power and water, and there is a fully functional amenities block with hot and cold water. It features a swimming pool, various tours, and the Cygnet Bay Bistro serving dishes inspired by seasonal produce and has unique offerings like pearl meat. For the full experience, splash out on a  heritage-listed Pealer’s shack.  You’ll get a feel for how divers lived in the early days of Australia’s pearling industry.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Wild Camping At James Price Point

James Price Point, or Waldamany, is a stunning  free campsite  located about 1 hour north of Broome. Picture a white sandy beach surrounded by rocky red cliffs where 4WD fully self-contained vehicles can spend the night above the sea. The site is beautiful but can get  very windy,  so prepare for rugged, wild camping. Also, note that there is a  3-day limit  on camping and no facilities.

I tried to visit Dampier peninsular in may 2022 but found that after driving the 200 km road that local people had blocked the road to Cape Leveque and Beagle Bay so we saw nothing but shrubs along the way We had visited before and knew of its beauty

Today you will be greeted by our friendly and professional Tour Director before we get underway and head north up the Dampier Peninsular to arrive at Cygnet Bay.

We spend the next two nights at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in safari tents with ensuite bathrooms. Get to know your travelling companions over dinner in the lodge restaurant. Meals (L.D)

After waking up in paradise we head out the door to explore.

This morning we visit the Trochus Hatchery and Aquaculture Centre located at Ardyaloon (One Arm Point). Here we'll learn about aquaculture production and meet some of the incredible marine life of the Dampier Peninsular.

Later we visit Australia's oldest pearl farm - Cygnet Bay Pearls. Here we enjoy a guided tour of the farm and learn how a family-owned and operated pearl farm pioneered the process of culturing the famous Australian South Sea Pearl. We also discover the Kimberley Coast with a highspeed boat tour showcasing the giant tidal movements and amazing Kimberley islands. Meals (B.L.D)

Enjoy a leisurely morning before heading south back down the Dampier Peninsula. Along the way we'll stop off at Beagle Bay which was established as a mission by Trappist monks in 1895. We'll visit the Sacred Heart Church and take in the stunning pearl altar before continuing our journey south, back to the Great Northern Highway and on to Derby. After a visit to the Boab Prison Tree and Myall's Bore & Cattle Trough we'll check in to the Spinifex Lodge. Meals (B.L.D)

Today we begin our journey along the infamous Gibb River Road. Pass through the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (formerly the King Leopold Ranges) before arriving at Bell Gorge, one of the most spectacular gorges in the Kimberley.

Enjoy a guided walk, have a swim and admire the stunning views before continuing on to Mt Hart Station. Steeped in history, the property was established back in 1914 as a working cattle station until it was declassified in 2000 and is now located on the lands of the Ngarinyin people.

Our stay for the next two nights is in unique safari style tents and this evening we enjoy a few drinks at the Settlers Bar before dinner. Meals (B.L.D)

Today we explore the beauty of Mount Hart's vast wilderness. Travelling in specially built open back safari trucks for Outback Spirit, we take in the true appreciation of the stunning natural landscape.

Your guides will provide commentary on Mount Hart's National Park programs, we visit Barkers Pool, Dolerite Gorge and enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the waterholes.

This afternoon we return to camp where the remainder of the day is at leisure with the opportunity to walk and explore the gardens near the lodge area. Meals (B.L.D)

This morning we make our way back to the Gibb River Road before stopping to explore Galvans Gorge. After a swim we'll continue along the Gibb, heading past Mount Barnett and on to the Kalumburu Road where we begin heading north.

Later this afternoon we break our journey for an overnight stop at Drysdale River Station, which runs 9,000 head of cattle across more than 1 million acres. Here we spend the night in comfortable station cabins with private ensuite bathroom facilities. Meals (B.L.D)

Today our journey takes us further north along the Kalumburu Road before turning off to the Mitchell Plateau. After fording the King Edward River we'll visit some spectacular Wanjina rock art galleries. We then pass through ancient Livistona palm forests on our way to the Mitchell Plateau, arriving at our very own Ngauwudu Safari Camp for a relaxing afternoon or maybe a swim in the camp's pristine waterhole before getting ready for dinner.

A true piece of outback luxury, Ngauwudu Safari Camp features deluxe Safari Suites with ensuite bathrooms and quality furnishings and is the most luxurious and substantial tented safari camp in the entire Kimberley. Enjoy two nights here as we discover the Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell Falls. Meals: B.L.D

A big walk today, but also a big highlight! After a short drive to the ranger station we set out on a 4km walking tour to the breathtaking Mitchell Falls (good level of fitness and mobility required). With the help of expert local guides from the Kandiwal Community, we'll discover rarely seen Gwion and Wanjina rock art galleries, with full interpretation. The walk also takes us past Little and Big Mertens Falls before concluding at the sensational 4-tiered Mitchell Falls.

Upon reaching the Mitchell Falls we enjoy our picnic lunch and admire the thunderous falls before returning on a scenic helicopter flight (included). Seeing the falls from the air is an absolute highlight and a great way to finish off the walk. We then return to the camp for a well-earned rest and perhaps a swim in the palm fringed creek. Meals: B.L.D

Please Note: For passengers not wishing to do the Mitchell Falls walk there is an option to fly down by helicopter. An Outback Spirit guide will still escort you. The flight cost is from $179.00 per person (own expense).

Please note: Weight limits apply to all scenic flights

Today we retreat from the Mitchell Plateau and follow the Kalumburu Road back to the Gibb River Road. From here we head east and ford the Durack River before arriving at the foothills of the Cockburn Range. Admire the stunning vista in the soft late afternoon light before crossing the mighty Pentecost and heading on to Emma Gorge Resort, part of the renowned El Questro Wilderness Park.

Here we spend two nights in unique tented safari cabins dotted through the bush. Meals: B.L.D

After breakfast we'll drive deeper into this iconic Kimberley wilderness park to Chamberlain Gorge, a beautiful three-kilometre-long fresh waterhole bound by towering escarpment. Enjoy a 90-minute gorge cruise and feed some of the cheeky Archerfish before visiting Zebedee Thermal Springs for a swim in the crystal-clear water. Nestled against a rocky range and surrounded by palms, the Springs are one of the highlights of any visit to El Questro. Enjoy some relaxing time here before visiting the station township, the hub of El Questro.

This afternoon, there is time to take a guided walk up to the stunning Emma Gorge waterfall (three hours return - a good level of fitness required, but well worth it) if you wish. A swim here is a highlight of any visit to El Questro, so be sure to bring your swimming attire.

We return to Emma Gorge Resort for some free time before dinner in the unique alfresco restaurant. Meals: B.L.D

This morning we enjoy a visit to Wyndham and Five Rivers Lookout, boasting dramatic views out of Cambridge Gulf. En route we'll also visit Parry Lagoons, home to a vast array of birdlife.

Later today we travel to Kununurra and check into the Kununurra Country Club Resort. Meals: (B.L.D)

This morning we depart El Questro and head to Kununurra, a town originally established to service the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. After some free time in the town centre we'll continue up towards Lake Argyle, with a visit to the Durack Homestead Museum en route to the dam wall. This afternoon enjoy a sensational three hour cruise down the Ord River with expert commentary about the Ord Irrigation Scheme and local environment. We arrive back in Kununurra at sunset and make our way to the Kununurra Country Club Resort for our overnight stay. Meals: (B.L.D)

Before departing Kununurra we'll take a tour of the surrounding farming country. Drive through parts of the massive Ord River Irrigation Scheme on Ivanhoe Plains where melons, mangoes, sandalwood and other crops are grown. After a visit to the award winning Sandalwood Factory, we begin our trek south to the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park (the Bungle Bungles), arriving late afternoon.

We'll spend the next two nights at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, owned by Outback Spirit in partnership with Aviair/Helispirit. The lodge features comfortable cabins with ensuite bathrooms and is the only lodge in the park with a swimming pool. Meals: (B.L.D)

Today we explore the wonders of Purnululu, including its unique orange and black beehive shaped domes. First up, enjoy a breathtaking 18-minute scenic helicopter flight over the park with a bird's eye view of its astounding natural features. Afterwards, enjoy a walk along Piccaninny Creek to the mind boggling natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge and then follow the 'dome trail' for a closer inspection of the park's unique geological formations.

This afternoon we'll head to the northern region of the Bungle Bungles to visit Echidna Chasm before returning to the lodge. Meals: B.L.D

Please note: Weight limits apply to all scenic flights

We depart the Bungle Bungles early this morning and back track along the infamous Bungles track. From here we head into Halls Creek. On arrival in town we divert out to Old Halls Creek to view the site of the original township where the goldrush was located, along with the famous China Wall.

We travel back to Halls Creek for lunch and from here join the Great Northern Highway to the town of Fitzroy Crossing, the site of where the unprecedented flood events occurred in 2023.

We overnight at the Fitzroy River Lodge. Meals (B.L.D)

This morning we cross the Fitzroy River to join the Leopold Downs Road. This road cuts through large cattle properties and forms parts of Bunuba country. Our highlight for the morning is a visit to Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), where water has carved a large tunnel through the limestone Napier Ranges.

At 750m long and up to 20m in height in places, this was formed 350 million years ago as part of an ocean reef system.

We then depart for Derby, and visit an Art gallery before arriving late afternoon to check in to Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa for our two-night stay. Meals: (B.L.D)

*We recommend packing water/reef shoes to take part in the Tunnel Creek walk.

Our journey is ending on a high with a sensational half day adventure to the Horizontal Falls. Described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’, the falls are created when the 2nd largest tides in the world hurtle through two narrow coastal gorges.

First up, join us for a town tour of Broome or relax at the resort until you are collected for your Horizontal Falls adventure.

Enjoy a 60-minute seaplane flight and land on the calm waters of Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago. Then, board one of their power boats for an exciting ride through the Horizontal Falls. You’ll hear from their expert skipper on the unique geological structures that have formed to create the Horizontal Falls while admiring the amazing azure waters that wash around you. We’ll also cruise some of the surrounding bays and creeks and have a bite to eat on their floating pontoon. Learn from their experienced Pontoon crew about rich local marine life and have a refreshing swim in Talbot Bay waters in a safety of their partly-submerged marine viewing platform before returning to Broome.

Tonight, we gather for our final dinner together and celebrate our adventure through the Kimberley. Meals: (B,L,D)

CAPE LEVEQUE FULL DAY ADVENTURE TOUR rocks

CAPE LEVEQUE FULL DAY COACH TOUR & CRUISE

Our Cape Leveque Full Day Coach Tour Cruise are a big hit, taking in aboriginal cultural experiences and outstanding landscapes.

Departing:      07.00 am

Returning:       05.00 pm

Duration:       10 hours

Just a few kilometres out of Broome we head north on Cape Leveque Road. Travelling over rugged terrain on the unsealed sections of the road, our first stop is Beagle Bay Aboriginal Community. Here we visit the famous Sacred Heart Church with its exquisite Pearl Shell Altar, built in 1918 by the Pallotine Monks.

Heading further north, our next stop is One Arm Point. One Arm Point is a remote Indigenous community with amazing views of the Buccaneer Archipelago. Here, we enjoy a guided visit to the trochus hatchery and learn about the Bardi Jawis strong connection to their rich culture and saltwater traditions. Visit the aquaculture centre, where a range of local art and artefacts can be admired and purchased (cash only).

Next stop is Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm situated on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Enjoy a chef prepared lunch followed by a Pearl Farm Tour. A family owned business, it is Australia’s oldest operating Pearl Farm. An opportunity also to visit their showroom, where you will see some of the finest South Sea Pearls grown and harvested.

Time for an afternoon swim in the beautiful turquoise waters of Kooljaman. Sit back and relax or stroll along the beautiful white sand beach, taking in the amazing scenery.

We then join the Scenic Flight (must be pre-booked), arriving in Broome at approximately 5:00pm. A drop off to your hotel is included.

Exploring Cape Leveque, Dampier Peninsula — WA

When it comes to beautiful and remote coastlines, Western Australia has plenty to offer. But for those wanting to get away from the crowds, the stunning Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula is a tranquil paradise filled with beautiful beaches, unique campsites and welcoming communities just waiting to be explored.

And best yet, you can take your camper trailer with you. The Broome-Cape Leveque Road has now been fully sealed, making travel easier and more enjoyable than ever. Please note, not all side roads have been sealed, so it’s best to ensure both you and your camper are suited to rough travel.

As always when travelling in remote parts of Australia, ensure you have the right safety gear, including recovery equipment , UHF radio , sat phone , spare parts suitable for your setup (such as wheel bearings), and a well-planned route with fuel refills taken into account.

tours cape leveque

It is also advised to have planned your accommodation in advance.

So, buckle up and join us on this adventure from Broome to Ardyaloon with plenty of diversions along the way.

Things to know

Grading: AWD (with caution)

Trip time: 2–3 days

Distance: 312km, Broome to Ardyaloon with detours

Longest distance without fuel: 127km, Broome to Beagle Bay

Best time of year: May–October

Permits and fees: The Broome-Cape Leveque Road is a public road, and therefore no permits are required. Visitors intending on leaving this main road and travelling across Aboriginal land to reach overnight destinations, such as Middle Lagoon, do not require a permit as long as they already have an accommodation booking and proceed directly to their destination.

There are some Aboriginal communities on the peninsula, such as Beagle Bay, Kooljaman and Lombinda, that welcome day visitors, and a small fee is generally required.

Warning: While the Broome-Cape Leveque Road has now been sealed (the final 90km finished in 2020), some of the side roads are still gravel and often quite corrugated and rough, particularly after heavy rain. Check road conditions with the Broome Visitor Centre for up-to-date information before departing.

Takeaway alcohol cannot be purchased anywhere on the Damper Peninsula. Most locations will allow alcohol to be carried through but check the situation before leaving Broome.

For those bringing their furry companions along for the ride, please note that dogs/pets are generally not permitted on the peninsula. There are some camps and communities that do allow dogs, which would require you to travel directly to the location without stopping and letting your dog outside on the way.

High clearance 4x4 vehicles and offroad camper are still needed if you plan to access side roads off the Broome-Cape Leveque Road.

Handy navigation

  • The Kimberley Map
  • Hema HX-2+ Navigator

Head north out of Broome and in 10km there will be a left turn onto the now fully sealed Broome-Cape Leveque Road. Follow the road for approximately 111km and take the turn-off to Burrguk (Banana Wells) which is located 14km from the main road.

tours cape leveque

Banana Well Getaway is an eco-friendly retreat and campground, with options between cabins, houses or camper trailer-friendly sites (powered and unpowered available).

Back on the main road you’ll soon come to the turnoff to the Aboriginal community of Beagle Bay (located approximately 123km north of Broome). This 4km detour is well worth the visit, and we recommend checking out the Sacred Heart Church, which features a stunning mother of pearl shell altar built by local Aboriginal people and Pallottine monks. Please note, visitors must pay an entry fee at the community office before visiting the church.

For those wanting to divert inland, south of the Beagle Bay turn-off there is a narrow dirt track which heads 123km east before turning south to the Great Northern Highway, 55km west of the Willare Bridge Roadhouse and Caravan Park. Please note, this track is quite narrow and lined with trees that will scrape along any campers or vans wider than a LandCruiser or Patrol.

Turning back onto Broome-Cape Leveque Road after Beagle Bay, drive another 21km north to the Middle Lagoon turn-off. Middle Lagoon is located 34km from the turn and is a fan-favourite for camping and fishing. There are plenty of options when it comes to accommodation. Natures Hideaway Middle Lagoon , Gnylmarung , Whale Song Campground , and Mercedes Cove all offer unique and beautiful destinations to set up camp and explore the area.

tours cape leveque

Alternatively (or additionally if you’ve got time to spare), another 4km further north along the main road there is a turn-off towards the east which leads to La Djardarr Bay which offers basic coastal camping.

Another 44km along the main road are the turn-offs to the Lombadina and Djarindjin communities near Thomas Bay, both of which are easy 2km detours.

The Djarindjin Roadhouse is a good spot to stop for fuel and food refills, and the new caravan park has modern facilities and camper trailer-friendly sites.

The Lombadina bakery is a must-visit, offering fresh bread from its wood-fired oven on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The town also offers a range of accommodation, tours and fishing trips - bookings are required. Other sites to see include the old church, the beach and the Lombadina Art and Craft Centre. Permits are required to enter the town (day passes are available), and these can be organised at the office upon arrival. (E: [email protected], P: 08 9192 4936). The community is closed on weekends and public holidays, and private boats are not permitted.

tours cape leveque

North of the junction the main road passes by the all-weather airstrip that services the area. After this, you can spot a track heading off to the east to Mudnunn and the campground at Bygnunn.

Please note, the popular Kooljaman Wilderness Camp north of Lombadina closed its doors in late 2021.

Following the main road you will soon see a turn-off towards the remote Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm , a WA gem that offers locally grown pearls, tours, a fantastic restaurant and a wide range of accommodation and camping options. It’s other claim to fame is that it is home to the only pool on the Dampier Peninsula. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm also has fuel for purchase.

Another 7km along the bitumen (you’re now approximately 215km from Broome), you arrive at Ardyaloon (One Arm Point), a remote Aboriginal community at the very tip of the peninsula. Permits are required and can be organised from the office. Once you’ve got that sorted, head out to Flat Rock Lookout and then the Ardyaloon Hatchery , where you can learn about the Bardi Jawi people’s connections to their saltwater traditions and enjoy stunning views of the fish and coral species found in the area.

tours cape leveque

The beauty of Cape Leveque

Located at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, Cape Leveque belongs to the Bardi people, who allow visitors to come and stay in this beautiful and unique part of Western Australia. All land from the Djarindjin turn-off, approximately 40km south of the northern tip of the peninsula, is now included in the Bardi Jawi Indigenous Protected Area, which covers 126,990ha of land and sea country, and is patrolled by Bardi Jawi Rangers.

Cape Leveque Lighthouse is located on the western coastline and is well worth a visit. Built in 1911, this historic lighthouse was manned up until 1985. To one side of the lighthouse you can view the red sculptured cliffs which rise up above white sand beaches and crystal clear water, while on the other side of the lighthouse there’s a good swimming beach.

One of the best things about Cape Leveque is its remoteness, meaning that you won’t be sharing the beach and breathtaking sunsets with countless other like-minded travellers like you will on Cable Beach in Broome. The red cliffs are stunning to see as the sun sets, and this is a great spot to spot dolphins and migrating whales.

tours cape leveque

Things to do

The Dampier Peninsula offers a wonderland of places to explore, swim, fish and relax.

Please note, there are saltwater crocodiles in these waters, so be croc safe and always ask hosts or campsite staff about safe places to swim and fish. If you aren’t able to bring your boat as well as your camper, don’t despair. Beach fishing can be done at high tide from many of the beaches and rocky headlands, and many of the resorts and towns run fishing tours if you want to get expert advice from the locals.

Organising a cultural tour is a must, and gives great insight into the rich history of this remote part of Australia and the special relationship its Traditional owners have with the land. Brian Lee Tagalong Tour and Bundy’s Cultural Tours are great options, as are the many tours offered at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm and from the Lombadina community .

Another way to experience Cape Leveque and its natural wonders is via a scenic flight , which can be organised through the Broome Visitor Centre.

For the animal lovers, journeying to Cape Leveque in the winter months offers a great chance of seeing humpback whales during their migration to and from their calving grounds further north in the Kimberley region. They can often be spotted in the bay in front of Whale Song Campground.
