Queens of the Stone Age Brings Raw Fury to Forest Hills Stadium at Rousing New York Stop: Concert Review

Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has faced many demons since the release of the 2017 album “Villains”: cancer, divorce, rehab and court battles. And the new Queens record, the just-released “ In Times New Roman… ,” definitely adds weight to the band’s woozy, bluesy rock — a dour energy far removed from the dancier sound conjured by producer Mark Ronson on “Villains.”

Popular on Variety

Ever since Homme’s good friend Dave Grohl filled in as the drummer on QOTSA’s signature 2002 album “Songs for the Deaf,” he inadvertently set expectations sky-high for the role. After all, Grohl’s highest-profile return to the kit since Nirvana and early Foo Fighters albums was explosive, and his performances on tracks like “A Song for the Dead” are regularly performed by drummers on TikTok to prove their chops.

Theodore is the second post-Grohl drummer in the band, and while his style with the proggy Mars Volta was maximalist, he lives in the pocket for Homme’s more straightforward songwriting, harnessing the power and drive to leave even the drunkest bro in the crowd dancing at Forest Hills Stadium.

Beyond new material, QOTSA filled their setlist with songs from “Deaf,” their 2013 fan-favorite “…Like Clockwork” and a handful of other hits. The group blazed through this well-worn material, keeping the groove rolling along on rock chart risers like “No One Knows,” “Little Sister” and “The Way You Used to Do” and deeper cuts like “If I Had a Tail” and the psychedelic “Better Living Through Chemistry.”

Beyond their musicianship, the band’s stage antics created as much as to look at as the dramatic lighting rigs. For the first stretch, the guys were all business, headbanging and throwing guitars around, perfecting rock star swagger. But as their set went on they loosened up, allowing for some great squealing guitar solos, crowd participation like in an extended “Make It Wit Chu,” and plenty of room for Homme’s genial stage banter, regularly encouraging the audience to dance and screw in equal measure.

At this point in his career, Homme’s biggest issue playing live is his catalogue is too consistent and deep. The hits must be played, but fans can only dream of a sweaty club night crammed with old songs and B-sides. But as one of the few bands still carrying the torch of hard-living rock ‘n’ roll, it’s hard to imagine asking any more from Queens of the Stone Age.

Things To Do

Music + concerts, music + concerts | how queens of the stone age became the ‘underdogs of those rock bands still standing’, the band's end is nero tour reaches the kia forum in inglewood on saturday, dec. 16..

qotsa tour reddit

After five years off the road, bassist Michael Shuman of Queens of the Stone Age says it feels fantastic to get back on tour again.

“I think we’re having the most fun we’ve ever had together,” he says. “Having the most fun on stage together. And yeah, you don’t realize it ’til it’s gone.

“But when you take away that side of us, you do take away part of our identity as individuals and as a band,” Shuman says on a recent phone call. “So to get that back, I feel like myself. I feel a little more whole.”

Queens of the Stone Age will play its 68th show of 2023 when the End Is Nero Tour reaches the Kia Forum in Inglewood on Saturday, Dec. 16. The British band Spiritualized opens the show, and before that, Queens Colosseum, a pre-show party on the Forum grounds, delivers includes burlesque curated by Kitty Lane and friends from Jumbo’s Clown Room, carnival games, flash tattoos, live music and more.

Yet while things might be great now – “In Times New Roman…” the band’s eighth studio album in June is up for a pair of Grammys – it wasn’t always clear when or if the band would make it out of the studio and back on the road, Shuman says.

“Making the record was not easy for us,” he says. “It was a hard one to make. So I’m just glad we’re out of that part of it, and just back to laughing with each other and playing with each other.”

‘That perfect moment’

Singer-guitarist Josh Homme, who founded the band in 1996, is the sole member to have been in the band ever since. But guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen joined in 2002, Shuman and multi-instrumentalist Dean Fertita five years later, and drummer Jon Theodore in 2013.

It’s a consistency born not just of musical kinship but genuine friendship, Shuman says.

“Most bands are not as fortunate as us to be so close-knit, and to like each other and want to hang out with each other all the time,” he says. “I mean, a lot of bands either are fighting on the road, or if they’re a big band, have lots of dough, they get their individual cars and get the (bleep) out of the venue the minute the show’s done.

“But we’re eating together. We’re walking together. We’re hanging out together. We don’t soundcheck a lot anymore, so we get to enjoy the day together. And it’s basically us just sitting in a room, talking (bleep) and laughing with other.”

Even now, there’s a thrilling moment that comes each night at the threshold of the stage, he says.

“There’s something which we’ve discussed as a band, that moment right before you go out on stage,” Shuman says. “When kind of the possibilities are endless and you haven’t (bleeped) anything up yet. The crowd is so excited.

“It’s just that perfect moment,” he says. “Things could go wrong on stage. And that’s what we like, too, that we never know what’s going to happen. We like a little danger up there, and that it could all collapse at any moment.”

‘The weight in the room’

Five or six months after the pandemic started, as Queens entered the studio to make its next album, a different threat of collapse loomed over the band.

“There were moments during this record where I was like, ‘I don’t know if we’re gonna finish this thing. I don’t know if we’re gonna be able to go on tour,’” Shuman says. “We all were just dealing with a lot of personal stuff, and you could feel the weight in the room.

“Not saying we weren’t having a great time, but when it was difficult, it was the worst (stuff) ever,” he says. “And you’re trying to support each other, but sometimes there’s nothing you can do.

Shuman declined to talk about the personal elements, but it is public knowledge that Homme spent several years in a bitter divorce and custody battle with the Australian singer Brody Dalle, which overlapped with the start of recording and the year-long hiatus before Homme and Shuman went back in the studio to do the album’s vocals.

“We did about 35 days straight, just me and him and our engineer,” Shuman says. “And even though we’re brothers, it was an even deeper bonding experience. I think that’s why it’s such a special record, but I don’t ever want to make a record like that again.

“Every record we make actually, we’re like, ‘Please, can we have fun next time?’” he says. “And then it’s always a (bleepin’) nightmare. But yeah, I’m proud of the record. It’s not a modern rock record, that’s for sure. And that’s what I think we pride ourselves in, too. Taking risks.”

‘It keeps Queens fresh’

Unlike some bands, Queens of the Stone Age has always embraced the opportunity to mix things up. Early on, that often was reflected in the changing lineups Homme put together. Former members Nick Oliveri and the late Mark Lanegan used to share lead vocals with Homme, and albums often featured guest artists.

At other times, that’s taken the shape of side projects. Homme plays at times with Eagles of Death Metal , records guest artist collections under the name The Desert Sessions, and also formed the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.

He also did the music for the 2017 German film “In The Fade,” which took its English title from a Queens song and won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film.

Shuman has recorded and played with the group Mini Mansions and currently has a solo project called GLU. Fertita formed the Dead Weather with Jack White and the Kills’ Alison Mosshart . He and Homme recorded with Iggy Pop on the album “Post Pop Depression.” Van Leeuwen joined Homme as part of Pop’s band on that tour and has also toured with Eagles of Death Metal and the Damned among others.

“It keeps Queens fresh,” Shuman says. “When we come back home, it’s exciting and hopefully everyone’s gone and learned from these other experiences and musical endeavors. And hopefully brought some other knowledge back to the band and can share that in the next record we make.

“Again, our music is really diverse,” he says. “A lot of people think of us just like a hard rock band. Which is like, ‘Well, maybe you haven’t listened to all the records.’

“We need that as musicians, as human beings, to have other outlets,” he says. “I think it’s important. Now, does it sometimes get in the way? Yes. And although Queens is our priority, I think overall it’s healthy for us. I feel like there would be some resentment if you didn’t get certain things out of your system.”

‘Being true to yourself’

Seventeen years into his life with Queens, Shuman says the band has remained true to its essence, while also experiencing small points of change.

The thunder of early Queens of the Stone Age music has lifted on more recent albums due to a simple change: For the most part, they no longer record and write with instruments tuned to C, which typically gives chords a heavier sound, Shuman says.

While Homme has always been the founder and leader of the band, that role gets more credit today from bandmates and fans alike, he adds.

“I just think we’ve gotten bigger, too, which is crazy to me,” he says, noting that after shifting from a major label to the indie Matador Records, the band seemed to step up to a higher level of success. Shuman says he’s not entirely sure of the reasons why more than 30 years into the band’s life it continues to grow in size and success.

“If I knew, I’d bottle it up,” he says. “The only thing I can think is that by being true to yourself – and I’ve learned this from watching Josh all these years – is that if we’re just true to ourselves it will be real to us and people will be able to see that, and be like, ‘Oh, I like that authenticity and I connect with that.’

“I mean, I know that we’ll never be one of the biggest rock bands in the world, right?” Shuman says. “We’ll never get to that, and that’s OK. And we accept that we’re, in some ways, the underdogs of those rock bands left standing.”

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

The trust issues that plagued Future and Metro Boomin on their recent blockbuster collaborative albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You might finally be subsiding. On Monday, the rapper and producer announced the We Trust You Tour, set to make stops throughout North America this summer.

The tour will begin on July 30 in Kansas City. The run is currently scheduled to make stops in Saint Paul, Nashville, Detroit, Atlanta, Toronto, Boston, Brooklyn, New Orleans, Dallas, Inglewood, Portland, and more cities. Future and Metro Boomin will close out the We Trust You Tour at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on Sept. 9.

Tickets will be available for purchase during the general sale beginning Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. local time. Presales for the tour will offer early access to tickets beginning Wednesday, April 17 at 10 a.m. local time.

2024 RBC Heritage live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, golf coverage, radio

There is no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap this week on the pga tour.

rbc-heritage-signage-2023-g.jpg

Players make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for this week's 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers will tee it up on Harbour Town Golf Links across the first two days as yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar gets underway.

Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage will not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend. That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage; he followed a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head.

If Spieth is to return to the winner's circle, he will have to go through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 remains in the field for now and aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were among those to perform well at the Masters, and they hope that translates to more of the same. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will look for some form. In total, 26 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to play.

Woman Chooses Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Over Best Friend's Wedding: 'Not Canceling My Plans'

In an anonymous post on Reddit, the woman claims her friend "knew that I've booked tickets on that date" even before scheduling her ceremony

An anonymous woman is igniting heated debate after sharing that she's choosing to attend Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour over her best friend's wedding in Albania.

In a post on Reddit , the anonymous woman (who identifies herself only as a 26-year-old female living in Albania) says her friend is getting married on July 13 — the same day she'll be in Milan to see Swift perform.

"The issue is that on July 13th my fiancé and I have booked tickets for the Eras tour in Milan almost 1 year in advance or else they'd sell out," the poster writes. "We also had to book hotels, flights etc because we'll stay there for 4 days."

The poster claims her friend "knew that I've booked tickets on that date" even before scheduling the ceremony.

"She got engaged in November and booked her wedding date last month," the woman writes. "She had told everyone she'd get married during summer but she never said the exact date up to this point when many people kept asking her so they can know their plans. I booked the tickets this past summer when the tour dates were announced."

When the friend shared her wedding date, the poster writes that she was incredulous.

"When she told me the date I told her she can't be serious. She was like why? I reminded her I have the concert and the trip on those dates. And she told me ok? Then cancel it obviously? I told her sorry I can't," the poster writes.

She continues: "I can't cancel the hotel, plane tickets and concert tickets. I'll have to pay a high fee to cancel all that and I don't think I can even cancel the concert tickets. I reminded her it's something I've planned a year in advance and she knew."

The friend, however, wasn't swayed.

"She straight up told me that yes she knew but she didn't care because as a friend she'd expect me to do the right thing and drop everything for her wedding," she writes. "I told her I'm not canceling my plans for something you knew a year in advance I'd do."

The bride-to-be has accused the poster of being a bad friend "for putting a trip and a concert over her wedding," and now refuses to speak with her "unless I send her proof that I'm cancelling everything to attend her wedding."

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Commenters on the post largely sided with the poster, with one writing, "Under normal circumstances I'd say you should prioritize your best friend's wedding over a concert. However, you made these plans over a year in advance and she knew about them ...The solution is simple. Send your regrets, go to the concert, and get on with your life. She's not worth it."

Another suggested the bride shouldn't be so worked up to begin with, commenting: "Go and enjoy!! A missing guest will not affect her wedding unless it's the groom! A wedding is a celebration of a couple's love for each other. Really doesn't have anything to do with who comes to watch the show."

Others suggested that maybe the bride herself was simply jealous. "The friend probably would have loved to go to see Taylor but can't so she's trying to ruin the experience," wrote one.

Best: Red Rocks in 2017 or Era Vulgaris tour in Louisville, 2007. Red Rocks was very atmospheric and kind of unreal. Louisville was my first QOTSA show and absolutely full of deep-cuts. Worst: Saw a rare, off-night show in St. Louis. Self-Titled tour. The audience was dead and Josh was clearly bored of playing those songs.
