Travel insurance - when to buy & how to save

Travel insurance coupon codes are online promo codes that allow you to save money when you buy travel insurance. Simply by entering one of the codes above when you buy a policy online from one of our travel insurance partners, you can access a discounted premium. This means you can enjoy all the benefits you would usually expect when you purchase travel insurance, but with the added bonus of substantial savings off the normal price of cover.

Thinking of using a coupon code to help save money on the cost of travel insurance for your next trip? Make sure you consider the pros and cons first.

  • Save money. Yeah, obviously! With these coupon codes at your disposal, you can pay less for travel insurance – it’s as simple as that.
  • Quick and easy. You don’t need to fill out any complicated forms or sign up to any spam email marketing service; all you need to do is enter the relevant code when you buy a policy.
  • Variety. Finder.com.au offers coupon codes from a number of travel insurance providers, which means there are several options to choose from when searching for cover.
  • Wide range of policies. Travel insurance coupon codes can also be used across a range of policies, allowing you to choose cover that suits your needs.
  • You may need to look past the cost. The premium is far from the only factor that determines whether a travel insurance policy is right for you. You should also look at policy features, limits and exclusions when choosing an insurer.
  • Terms and conditions can apply. Make sure you’re aware of any terms and conditions that apply to travel insurance discounts.
  • Not all policies may be discounted. Some insurers only offer discounts on particular policies, so make sure that you're getting the policy you want.
  • The discount may only be available for a limited time. Some discounts are offered for a short period, so don't miss out.

Using a finder.com.au coupon code is quick and easy. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps:

  • Review the current coupon codes listed above and choose the one you want
  • Click on the relevant link to view the code for your chosen travel insurer
  • By clicking on the link, you will also be taken to the insurer’s website so you can obtain a detailed quote
  • Review your travel insurance quote. If you’re happy with the cost of cover and the features the policy offers, proceed to checkout
  • Enter your coupon code in the field provided during the checkout process. Click “Apply” if necessary
  • The coupon code discount will be automatically deducted from the cost of your policy
  • Pay for the policy and hit the road with peace of mind!

Why should you use a travel insurance coupon code? Because you could save money, that’s why. We could all do with a little extra spending money on our next holiday, and using coupon codes is a simple way to save when buying travel insurance and keep more money in your own pocket.

Just by copying and pasting one of the codes above, you could enjoy substantial savings on the cost of travel insurance. Our range of travel insurance coupon codes is also constantly updated, so make sure to check back with us whenever you’re planning your next holiday for the latest deals and discounts.

Coupon codes aren’t the only way you can save money on travel insurance. Keep the following tips in mind to help cut the cost of your premium:

  • Buy online. Travel insurance from travel agents and airlines tends to be far more expensive than insurance purchased online, simply because many travel agents and airlines charge a commission on top of the price of cover. When you use finder.com.au, you'll pay the same as going direct.
  • Choose a lower level of cover. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to find that the lower the level of travel insurance cover you choose, the cheaper your premium will be. So if the cost of cover is important to you, consider choosing a basic policy rather than comprehensive cover, and remember to remove any optional extras you don’t need.
  • Consider multi-trip cover. Are you a frequent traveller? If so, buying a separate travel insurance policy for every trip you take can add up to be quite expensive. That’s why it could be worth your while considering annual multi-trip insurance , which covers all your holidays across a 12-month period and works out to be much cheaper for regular travellers.
  • Purchase a joint policy. If you’re travelling with a friend or relative, it can be quite expensive if each of you purchase separate travel insurance policies. But if you pool your resources and buy a joint policy, you can enjoy significant savings.
  • Adjust your excess. Many insurers allow you to choose the excess amount payable when you make a claim. By shifting to a higher excess, you can enjoy lower premiums.
  • Student discounts. Students tend to travel on a tight budget, so saving a little extra money on your travel insurance cover is always welcome. With this in mind, you may want to hunt around for an insurer that offers discounted cover for student travellers.
  • Senior discounts. If you’re over 55 years of age and no longer working full time, some insurers will offer discounted travel insurance for seniors . Check the fine print or contact the insurer directly to find out whether they offer any seniors discounts.
  • Group discounts. Travelling as part of a group? Use your strength in numbers to negotiate a better deal on your travel insurance policy.
  • Find cover for the whole family. If you’re planning a family holiday, did you know that many insurers will cover your children and other dependents travelling with you free of charge? This can help reduce the cost of cover, so check the fine print to find out whether your insurer offers cover for the whole family.
  • Shop around. Last but definitely not least, make sure to shop around for the best policy. This will not only help you find the most affordable cover, but more importantly, it will allow you to choose the policy that provides the best value.

For more tips on travel insurance discounts and savings, check out our guide to reducing your travel insurance premium . Otherwise, choose the discount you want from those listed above and enjoy the savings on offer.

It can be easy to snatch up the policy offering the lowest premium when comparing policies but doing this could leave you drastically underinsured. Here are some key points you may want to consider when looking for value for money travel insurance:

  • Benefit excess: Low cost policies may have higher excesses applied for the payment of benefits. It is important to work out what you stand to pay in excess charges prior to application.
  • Deterioration: Many policies will take into consideration the “wear and tear” of items when determining the benefit that will be paid. It can be worth assessing how this will be applied on your policy.
  • Exclusions on the policy: Many low cost policies have many exclusions for claim payment in place. As stated previously, it can be worth comparing the exclusions of policies prior to application.
  • Documentation required: It can be helpful to get an understanding what documentation your insurer will require in order for a claim to be paid. Many insurers will require either a receipt or valuation document for some types of claims, for example.
  • Limits on valuable items: Basic policies will generally only provide cover for items up to a certain value. You may want to consider registering any high-value items prior to departure to ensure adequate cover is in place.
  • Activities covered: Insurer will often have a complete list of the sports and activities that they are willing to cover under the policy. Many basic policies do not provide cover for potentially risky activities. If you are going to be participating in any high-risk activities on your trip, it might be worth considering a specialist policy.
  • Don’t ignore warnings in the media or from the government: Many insurers will not honour claims for events that have taken place in countries that have been recommended as no-travel areas by the government or mass media, or for claims resulting from the events warned about in travel advisories. It can be worth checking travel advisories before heading overseas, and checking whether your policy covers you there.

Age 83. Had heart stent 8 years ago. Want travel insurance for all but heart problems. (Have traveled frequently in last 8 years- no problems). Where to find?

Avatar

Thank you for your question.

If you had a heart stent before, this is generally considered a pre-existing heart condition. If you would like to get a travel insurance, you may compare your options from our list of travel insurance for pre-existing heart conditions .

The insurers will typically assess your condition by phone or online questionnaire before they could provide a quote. Please feel free to click the name of the insurer and press the “Get quote” button if available request a quote.

Please make sure that you’ve read the relevant T&Cs or PDS of the product/ policy before making a decision and consider whether it is right for you.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Anndy

I am 84 years of age and am quite fit and have no ongoing health problems however when I ask for a travel insurance quote and state my age I am told that they don’t cover older people. Where can I get an insurance company that will insure me on my next trip and not having to pay huge markups because of my age?

Thanks for reaching out.

You can refer to our page that lists insurers who offer insurance for people of your age . Simply fill out your travel details on the comparison form and click “Get a quote now” to receive and compare quotes from various travel insurance brands. There’s also a comparison table on the same page for you to quickly get an overview of what each insurance brand offers.

Please make sure to disclose all relevant information about your medical history to your insurer when you apply for cover. Failing to do so could result in your cover being void when it comes time to make a claim.

Cheers, Liezl

I have heard of people being sick on cruise ships and having to be airlifted back to australia. Which insurance companies provide cover for this?

Avatar

Thanks for getting in touch. Whether or not you’ll have cover for medical evacuation and repatriation will depend on the policy you choose. You can find out more about this topic by reading our article on travel insurance for medical evacuation .

RAC Travel Insurance Review

Mr. Travel

Everything you need to know before you buy travel insurance from RAC!

The experts say:

What rac customers are saying right now:.

  • 🤩 Quick and easy to set up a policy
  • 🤗 Customer service is helpful in getting the policy set up
  • 🤝 Polices can be changed mid-term with minimal admin costs
  • 😊 Changes are done quickly and easily
  • 😍 Customers have access to a variety of affordable insurance options
  • 😠 RAC charge a £25 admin fee to change a first name, which many people find unacceptable.
  • 😡 They have a complaints procedure that is geared towards them and not the customer, and they are unwilling to make changes to policies without additional fees.
  • 😤 They are very unhelpful on the phone and do not treat customers fairly.

RAC customer reviews summary

It's difficult to differentiate between customer reviews for RAC's core breakdown insurance offering and reviews for its travel insurance products. That said, it seems that in general customers are happy with the quality of RAC's products and the process of setting up, but rather less satisfied with the service they receive once the policy is in force. On that basis, we rate it 6/10.

  • Interestingly, the policy does not cover mental health problems that might arise during the trip, ior pre-existing issues.
  • Personal money cover is provided up to £750 in case of loss or theft.
  • The policy encompasses up to £750 coverage for replacing lost or stolen passports and travel documents, which includes travel expenses to retrieve the documents.

Does RAC travel insurance have COVID-19 cover?

Yes, RAC travel insurance includes some coverage for COVID-19, but it only applies to those that take out an International Comprehensive or Domestic policy.

However, the included benefits are different for the two policies and there are limits as to  how much RAC pays out for Covid claims.

RAC’s International Comprehensive plan comes with COVID-19 benefits that relate to:

Overseas medical and hospital expenses

Cancellation fees and lost deposits

Additional expenses

Travel delays.

The Domestic policy benefits around COVID-19 include:

Cancellations fees and lost deposits

Additional expenses

For more information, including the types of claims eligible for cover and any exclusions that may apply, have a look at the RAC travel insurance PDS.

What optional extras can I add to my RAC travel insurance policy?

Stock standard policies won’t always cover activities that carry more risk than usual. So, if you’re planning on hitting the slopes on your snowboard, or cruising the world on a cruise ship, then you might need to look into which optional extras RAC offers.

Note, these optional extras typically incur an extra premium, on top of what your base policy costs.

The optional extras you can purchase include:

Snow travel insurance

Cruise travel insurance

Pre-existing medical conditions (if not automatically included).

For details about what each of these optional extras includes and excludes, check out the RAC travel insurance PDS.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under RAC travel insurance?

There are a range of pre-existing medical conditions that are automatically covered under an RAC travel insurance policy, but you’ll still need to seek approval for coverage. That means you’ll need to notify RAC of any medical conditions you have so that they feature on your certificate of insurance.

Some conditions that aren’t automatically covered will need to be assessed by RAC before approval for coverage is granted.

You may need to pay an extra premium on top of the base policy cost in order for your pre-existing condition to be covered.

If you have any questions about medical condition coverage with RAC, then you can call 1300 655 179.

What do I do if there’s an emergency during my trip?

For 24-hour emergency assistance while you’re on your trip you can call RAC on +61 2 8055 1697.

If you can, have your policy number ready so that the helpline operators can assist you quickly and efficiently.

How do I make a claim with RAC travel insurance?

If you need to make a claim with RAC travel insurance, head to the RAC website and lodge your claim online.

In some cases, you’ll need to have documents that support your claim. For example, if you’re making a claim to cover your hospital bills, you’ll need evidence that you were both in the hospital and were charged for care.

If you need help with lodging your claim, you can call the RAC claims team on 1300 209 352. They will do their best to guide you through the process.

RAC aims to process your claim within 10 working days.

Is it possible to cancel my RAC travel insurance policy?

If you need to cancel your RAC travel insurance policy, there’s a 21-day cooling-off period in which you may be eligible for a full refund.

The full refund only applies if you haven’t started your trip, haven’t made a claim, and don’t intend to make a claim.

After the 21 days is up, however, you may only be eligible for a partial refund of your premium.

To cancel your cover, call 1300 655 179.

Everything you need to know about travel insurance for your fall trip.

View from the top of a skycraper in Mexico City.

Dave Paisley is headed to Mexico City for a month for a Spanish language immersion program this fall, but he doesn't want to take any chances. He needs travel insurance.

"My primary concerns are hospitalization and security," says Paisley, a retired executive from Seattle. "So I’m looking at a few things."

Travelers like him are doing a lot of looking lately. This fall is shaping up to be an interesting one for travelers. It's coming on the heels of a record summer for travel in North America, and it promises to bring challenges we haven't seen yet.

"This fall is unique," says Anna Redmond, the founder of Braav , a security consultancy firm. "We have two major conflicts — Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Hamas' conflict with Israel — creating massive instability and rippling outward into Europe and the Middle East. On top of that, it's an election year in the U.S. with an extremely contentious election that may draw even more attention to U.S. travelers."

Add to that the usual problems, including hurricanes, a resurgence of COVID-19, and the start of flu season and you have all the makings of a fall travel disaster that's worthy of a "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" sequel.

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners And Grades On July 26, 2024

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for saturday, july 27, the best spy movie in years just hit netflix, it's going to be a "very busy" fall for travel.

None of that is likely to stop people from traveling. Based on TravelInsurance.com's sales data, record summer travel looks set to continue right through fall. Travel insurance purchases for travel in October and November are up almost 20 percent overall. However, popular destinations such as France and Greece are up almost 50 percent and Spain is up over 68 percent.

"Travelers should also prepare themselves for a very busy fall travel season," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder TravelInsurance.com .

There's also this: Squaremouth.com reports the cost of travel has skyrocketed this fall. Average trip costs have gone up over 50 percent in a year, from $4,325 in fall 2023 to a staggering $8,898 this fall. (The hot destination for Squaremouth customers is Italy, with 14 percent of travelers heading there this autumn, compared to 8 percent a year ago.)

"When planning a fall trip, it's essential to choose comprehensive travel insurance that covers a range of potential issues," says Deanna Caffrey, director of Redpoint Resolutions . "I recommend policies that include trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical emergencies, and evacuation coverage. Given the unpredictable weather and the ongoing global health concerns, having a policy that covers unforeseen circumstances is crucial."

Here's how one traveler is protecting his fall trip

Paisley, the retired executive heading to Mexico, says he's mainly worried about getting sick or hurt.

"I read there’s a traffic death every seven hours, and that drivers are a little nuts there," he says. "Plus there are the usual concerns about just getting sick from unfamiliar food, water and viruses far from home."

He's looking at regular travel insurance policies, good for 30 days, that cover at least $50,000 in medical expenses.

"So far it’s between an Allianz policy and Trawick, which a friend recommended," he says.

His other worry? Getting stuck in a hospital in Mexico. All the policies he's considered include medical evacuation, but they’re all only to the nearest acceptable hospital.

"I’m not sure there would be an acceptable one down there for me, especially if it were something serious," he says.

So Paisley has also opted for a MedjetHorizon membership, which will cover him if he needs to be moved to a hospital back in the States. It also has a security benefit, "So if I get kidnapped or disappear, my kids have someone to call for help."

But for other travelers this fall, there's even more to consider.

What do you need to know if you're traveling this fall?

So if you're planning a trip in September, October or November, what do you need to know? Here's what experts say.

It's going to be a hyperactive hurricane season

For any fall trip throughout the Caribbean, or even domestic travel — particularly in the southern U.S. — it’s important to remember that the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season arrives in the fall and brings weather-related trip delays or interruptions.

"For 2024 in particular, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted above-normal hurricane activity at all levels," notes Scott Adamski, head of global product development at Travel Guard . "We've already experienced a Category 5 with Beryl, very early in the year, so we might expect a robust hurricane season."

Pro tip : You need to ensure your travel insurance policy adequately covers delays and interruptions. If you are unsure of your coverage needs, consider a cancel for any reason policy, which pays you between 50 percent and 75 percent of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you cancel for any reason.

Airline staffing shortages are still a problem

Another issue that's likely to affect fall travel is airline staffing challenges. Jason Block, CEO of WorldVia Travel Group , says although some airlines have addressed staffing gaps, the industry is still recovering from pandemic-related layoffs.

An additional wrinkle is new passenger protections that went into effect this summer.

"Recent regulations requiring airlines to automatically refund passengers for cancellations may incentivize airlines to be more cautious, potentially leading to some preemptive cancellations," he says. "Given these uncertainties, purchasing travel insurance has become more critical to protect against potential trip disruptions and financial losses."

Flu season is just around the corner

Even if you manage to escape the bad weather and an airline meltdown or two, there's always your health. Jeremy Murchland, president of Seven Corners , always recommends travel insurance for international travel since your domestic medical insurance might not cover you abroad.

"And it’s important to remember that travel insurance isn’t just for major medical emergencies," he adds. "That coverage can help you get treatment for seasonal illness. Whether it’s the flu or a particularly nasty cold, you might need to see a doctor overseas. Not only can your travel insurance cover the expenses of that visit and necessary medications, but a good insurance company can also help you find a doctor and navigate an unfamiliar healthcare system. "

This may seem like a minor issue, but according to Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance , these illnesses are the main cause of trip cancellations and interruptions.

His advice? "check with your medical insurer to see if your current health plan already covers you," he says. "While Medicare does not provide coverage for individuals traveling abroad, numerous U.S. insurers do."

But how should you buy insurance for your fall trip? And do you really need it for every trip?

Research carefully but don't wait too long

Travel insurance primarily covers cancellations, losses, delays, medical expenses, and needed assistance.

“Before you rely on any coverage – whether that’s the travel benefits with your credit card or the policy offered by your cruise line – be sure to read your policy carefully to help ensure you have adequate protection for your trip,” advises Beth Godlin, president of Aon Affinity Travel Practice. “Every policy has different benefits and exclusions or restrictions, and you do not want to be surprised when you file a claim.”

If you're traveling to a place where you're covered by your medical insurance and have no pre-paid expensive, it's safe to skip insurance. Experts also say selecting insurance should be based on reason and not on panic.

"Getting over-covered by insurance is the greatest mistake by many travelers, resulting in paying for already covered items," notes Virginia Tech hospitality and tourism professor Mahmood Khan.

For example, many credit cards cover limited insurance for cancellations, delays, or losses. Similarly, some employers provided adequate medical or travel insurance coverage. Check on those before you book your fall trip rather than hastily buying a policy after you've booked your tickets and hotel.

"Buying a travel insurance policy right after booking your flights and hotel not only checks off an item on your to-do list," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA , "but it can also put your mind at ease."

Caught in the CrowdStrike Outage? Here’s How to Get Refunds.

Air travelers paying for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to be reimbursed if their flight was impacted by an event in the airline’s control, like the CrowdStrike failure. Here’s how to get your money back.

  • Share full article

In a crowded airport terminal, a man wearing athletic clothes rests against his suitcase and other luggage, watching a mobile phone with a basketball at his side.

By Christine Chung

The global software outage last week caused thousands of travelers flying in the United States and internationally to have their flights delayed, canceled or both. In the days that followed, some airlines were trying to reboot critical computer systems affected by the outage, with many of their passengers still stranded at airports.

During a travel meltdown, it may seem nearly impossible for air travelers to find immediate help . Gate agents are swamped, customer service phone lines have hourslong hold times, and seemingly confusing or incomplete instructions online only add to the headaches.

Passengers who foot the bill for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to reimbursement if their flights were impacted by an event in the airlines’ control, like the CrowdStrike outage. Here’s how to get your money back.

[Are you seeking compensation from an airline following the Crowdstrike outage? We want to hear from you .]

If they caused the disruption, airlines owe passengers assistance

It is the airline’s fault when a situation under their control — issues with crew, maintenance, baggage and fuel, or software outages — leads to a delay or cancellation. Weather and air traffic control issues do not count. On Friday, the Transportation Department noted that this I.T. outage fell under the control of the airlines.

What passengers will get from airlines depends on how long they were forced to wait, but it could include transport to and from hotels and the costs of accommodation.

Know what you are owed, and ask for it

Strategize your ask. Gate agents may not always know the airline’s commitments or the Transportation Department policies. Usually, airlines prefer to take care of the details, distributing vouchers or directly booking hotel rooms. But during the CrowdStrike fallout, they initially did not believe they were required to provide assistance and later, seemingly, remained unaware of their obligations in some instances or were too overwhelmed by the numbers.

That meant many travelers had to take matters into their own hands to find transport, accommodation and meals, but they are eligible for reimbursement. However, how much will vary by airline and travelers won’t necessarily know before submitting receipts.

Reimbursement can generally be requested through an online form — hold onto your receipts!

Some airlines have online forms for reimbursement requests, while others will require you to contact customer service to start the process. Below are the online reimbursement or customer-services sites for some of the main U.S.-based airlines affected by the outages:

Delta Air Lines

United Airlines

American Airlines

Allegiant Air

Spirit Airlines

If your flight was canceled and you decided not to rebook, you can get a refund

Don’t expect this to be seamless or automatic. Airlines generally have online forms where you can request refunds; you’ll need all of your trip details for this. You can get a refund to your original form of payment; you do not need to accept flight credits or a travel voucher. In addition, you can contact the airline’s customer service team for more help and to check on the status of your claim.

Check the fine print of your credit card agreement or travel insurance policy

If you purchased travel insurance, the policy could cover certain types of trip interruptions, including select air travel issues — and your credit card agreement might also, though it may have a requirement that the affected flight was booked using it.

Here, too, remember to save your receipts and any other documentation, and brace yourself for a possibly lengthy process.

Consider lodging a complaint with the Transportation Department

On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the agency had opened an investigation into Delta’s response to the outage, after receiving numerous passenger complaints about the carrier. If you have a complaint yourself, you can submit it here .

That form can be used for concerns or comments related to other airlines as well, but not for security or safety issues. The Transportation Department investigates complaints, though they advise passengers to contact airlines first.

Best Credit Cards With Trip Delay Insurance

Trip delay insurance covers you (and often family members traveling with you) for expenses like meals, transportation, lodging, medication, and toiletries. For example, if your flight is delayed by more than six hours, your card may reimburse you up to $500 in "reasonable expenses" such as:

  • An Uber or taxi from the airport to a hotel
  • A one-night hotel reservation
  • Dinner at a nearby restaurant

I've used this benefit a handful of times, and it's saved me hundreds. Just note that you must use your qualifying card to pay for your fare — even if that means simply paying taxes and fees on an award flight.

Trip delay insurance applies to more than just flights. You're eligible for coverage whenever you book a "common carrier" — defined as "any land, water, or air conveyance that operates under a valid license to transport passengers for hire and requires purchasing a ticket before travel begins." As long as it's not a taxi, limo, commuter rail, bus, or rental car, you're likely covered.

Below are the top three credit cards for trip delay insurance. Even if you don't travel regularly, you should be using one of these cards to reserve your travel, because trip delay insurance will come in handy sooner or later.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is the gold standard of trip delay insurance. After just six hours of delay — or any delay that requires an overnight stay — you're eligible for up to $500 in covered expenses per ticket. You and those traveling with you (a spouse and dependent children under 22) are covered.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve charges a $550 annual fee, but it also comes with valuable travel benefits such as:

  • Up to $300 in annual travel credits (offsets the first $300 in travel you purchase each year with the card)
  • Airport lounge access (Priority Pass Select, Chase Sapphire lounges , and the Chase Sapphire Terrace at Austin airport )
  • Up to $100 NEXUS, Global Entry, or TSA PreCheck application fee credit
  • Complimentary two-year Lyft Pink All Access membership

You'll also earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. That's worth $1,080 in travel, based on Personal Finance Insider's valuation of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points at 1.8 cents each.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card Review

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is Capital One's first premium travel credit card . It's a Visa Infinite card (similar to the Chase Sapphire Reserve®), and benefits from extremely generous trip delay insurance***. You'll get up to $500 per ticket in covered expenses after a delay of six hours or more. Those eligible for this insurance are your spouse and dependent children under age 22.

The card has a welcome bonus offer of 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. That's worth $1,275 in travel, based on our valuation of Capital One miles. In addition, it also comes with travel perks like:

  • $300 per year in credits toward Capital One Travel bookings
  • Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and Capital One airport lounge access
  • 10,000-mile bonus each account anniversary
  • Access to the Capital One Premier Collection luxury hotel booking program
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card Review

U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card is another one of the few Visa Infinite cards on the market. As you'd expect, it's got excellent trip delay insurance. You'll receive up to $500 per ticket in coverage for expenses like meals and lodging (that aren't reimbursed by the airline or other "common carrier") when your trip is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay.

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card comes with 50,000 points after you spend $4,500 on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening. These points are worth 1.5 cents each when you use them toward travel. That means this bonus is worth $750. You'll also get benefits like:

  • Up to $325 in annual travel credits
  • Up to $100 in statement credits toward Global Entry and TSA PreCheck
  • Up to 30% discount on Audi on Demand (formerly Silvercar) rentals

U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Review

You might already know that most travel credit cards offer some form of rental car insurance. It's a great benefit because it can save users significant money in the case of damage or theft to your rental. Even by renting a car for just a few days, you could save $50+ by waiving the rental agency's in-house insurance CDW and instead covering your rental by paying with this card.

Two kinds of rental car insurance come with many popular cards:

  • Secondary insurance — Offers coverage benefits that are secondary to your personal auto insurance policy. In the event of damage due to theft or collision, car renters still have to file a claim through their personal auto insurance policy, and the secondary insurance is there to cover a portion of leftover costs. So, although this is a nice perk, it doesn't ease the sting of having to report to your personal insurance — often with resultant premium hikes.
  • Primary insurance — Coverage for loss or damage will be taken care of by the credit card company without you having to make a claim with your personal policy. In the long run, this could save a car renter significantly on both CDW and LDW, and it could help avoid raising premiums on their personal auto policy.

Primary rental car insurance is what you want. You must pay for the entire transaction with the credit card you'd be filing the insurance under. Some cards even require that renters book the entire trip on the card, so read the fine print carefully.

Primary insurance also generally doesn't include liability, damage to other cars, damage to personal property, personal bodily injury, or injury to others. See Personal Finance Insider's guide to liability car insurance for more details on this type of coverage.

Below are the top three credit cards for car rental insurance.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with up to $75,000 for theft and collision for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

You'll be extra motivated to make this card your dedicated car rental payment method because it earns 10 points per dollar for this expense when reserving through the Chase Travel ℠ Portal . Personal Finance Insider estimates Chase points value to be 1.8 cents each when used for travel — so earning 10x points equates to an 18% return.

When booking outside the portal, you'll earn 3 points per dollar for travel including rental cars.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is another rewards-earning monster when it comes to car rentals. Not only will you receive primary rental car insurance***, but you'll earn 10 miles per dollar on rental cars booked through the Capital One Travel Portal . You'll earn 2 miles per dollar for travel booked outside the portal.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express doesn't offer primary rental car insurance by default. However, you can receive primary premium car rental protection for a flat rate between $15.95 and $24.95 per rental period (not per day). It's not free like the other insurances on this list, but premium rental car benefits may fit your situation better:

  • You'll be covered for up to 42 consecutive days, whereas most other cards won't allow your rental to exceed 31 consecutive days.
  • You're insured for up to $100,000 of primary coverage against damage or theft — a higher number than several other cards.

You can enroll your Amex Platinum and automatically be covered whenever you rent a car. You'll be charged this flat rate whenever you pay for a rental with your card.

This card has a $695 annual fee — but it also offers 80,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $8,000 on eligible purchases on your new card in your first six months of card membership. That's worth $1,440 in travel per our valuation of Amex points. You'll also find travel perks such as:

  • Up to $200 in airline fee credits each calendar year**
  • Up to $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credits each calendar year**
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit ($100 statement credit every 4 years for a Global Entry application fee or up to $85 statement credit every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck®)
  • $189 per year in credits for CLEAR® Plus membership**
  • Up to $200 in annual credits toward prepaid hotel bookings through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts or The Hotel Collection (minimum two-night stay)

American Express Platinum Card Review

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance protects you if you're no longer able to go on a covered trip or your covered trip is interrupted mid-travel for reasons such as:

  • Your airline declared bankruptcy and cancels your flight
  • One of your immediate family members dies
  • There's a terrorist incident

This coverage will reimburse you for prepaid nonrefundable travel such as airfare, hotel stays, activities, etc. which you can't use (or finish). Additionally, you may be reimbursed for an unexpected flight back home.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® will reimburse you for up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses like plane tickets, hotel reservations, cruises, etc. Chase states that if your name is embossed on the card, you and your immediate family are all covered under this benefit. That means authorized users can utilize this benefit, as well as the primary cardholder.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card can reimburse you, your spouse, and your children up to $2,000 each for prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses like plane tickets, hotel bookings, etc. This is a significantly smaller per-person payout than the Chase Sapphire Reserve® — but there doesn't appear to be a hard cap on how much you can earn.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a trip cancellation/interruption reimbursement of up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses like plane tickets, hotel reservations, and hotels. That's part of what makes both Chase Sapphire cards excellent options for travel insurance.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the single best beginner points credit card. Its annual fee is reasonable at $95 per year, and it manages to offer many similar travel protections as much more expensive credit cards.

In terms of return rates, this card earns:

  • 5 points per dollar on Lyft rides through March 2025
  • 5 points per dollar on all travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3 points per dollar on dining, including eligible delivery services, takeout, and dining out
  • 3 points per dollar on select streaming services
  • 3 points per dollar on online grocery purchases  (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs)
  • 2 points per dollar on other travel
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

You'll also receive perks like up to $50 in annual statement credits toward hotel stays booked through Chase and a 10% anniversary point bonus (based on the dollar amount you spend).

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is currently offering a welcome bonus of  60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. That's worth an average of $1,080 in travel, based on Personal Finance Insider's points and miles valuations.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Review

If your carry-on or checked baggage goes missing — or if the airline, cruise ship, or other common carrier damages your belongings, this coverage could reimburse you up to a specified amount. Card issuers tend to price your belongings as the lesser of the following:

  • The original purchase price of your items
  • The actual cash value of your items when they were lost
  • The cost to replace those items

You must pay for your trip with an eligible card to be covered. Below are the three best credit cards for lost luggage reimbursement.

This card will give you up to $3,000 per person if you or an immediate family member check or carry on luggage that is damaged or lost.

If you or an immediate family member's check or carry-on luggage is damaged or lost, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card will cover you for the difference between the "value of the amount claimed" and the common carrier's compensation, up to $3,000 per covered trip.

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® Card provides up to $3,000 per person if you or an immediate family member check or carry on luggage that is damaged or lost — again, calculated by the difference between the "value of the amount claimed" and the common carrier's payment.

Ideally, you'll never find occasion to use any  credit card travel insurance. But this is the one to really hope will never come in handy.

Travel accident insurance covers you for things like dismemberment and death during your trip (most commonly, while you're riding as a passenger in, or entering/exiting, a licensed common carrier like an airplane or a cruise ship). Some of the best cards will pay up to $1 million. The payout you'll receive depends on the severity of the accident.

Generally, you'll get 100% of the benefit amount for things like:

  • Loss of life
  • Loss of speech and hearing
  • Loss of speech/hearing and loss of a hand, foot, or sight from one eye
  • Loss of sight in both eyes
  • Loss of a combination of any two of a loss of hand, foot, or sight of one eye

You'll get 50% of the benefit amount for things like:

  • Loss of one hand
  • Loss of one foot
  • Loss of sight in one eye
  • Loss of speech
  • Loss of hearing

You may also get 25% of the benefit amount for the loss of a thumb and index finger of the same hand. Credit card benefits vary by product and issuer, so be sure to read all the fine print.

Below are the top three credit cards for travel accident insurance. Remember, you must pay the entire cash portion of your travel with these cards to be covered.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the few cards that will give you up to $1 million of accidental death or dismemberment coverage under this benefit. That's double the coverage of most other cards. You'll get:

  • $1 million for common carrier travel accident insurance
  • $100,000 for 24-hour travel accident insurance

If your name is embossed on the card you've used to pay for your travel, you and your immediate family are covered.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is another (rare) card that will cover you for up to $1 million of accidental death or dismemberment insurance.

It does not appear that immediate family traveling with you will receive this benefit — so while the potential payout is the best in the game, you may want to opt for a smaller benefit amount with more widespread coverage.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card incurs no annual fee, yet offers travel accident insurance with some of the best cards on the market. You'll get up to $500,000 in coverage:

  • $500,000 for common carrier travel accident insurance

With this card, you'll earn:

  • 3x points* at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels
  • 2x points on other eligible travel purchases
  • 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases

Other than that, the card doesn't offer an immense value proposition — its best benefit is the 15 Marriott elite night credits each calendar year, which can help you to achieve Marriott elite status much more quickly. But if you're looking for a no-annual-fee travel credit card with insurance, it's definitely worth a look.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card Review

If you're injured or otherwise incapacitated and need to be evacuated, this coverage would reimburse expenses such as:

  • Any land, water, or air transportation you require
  • Medical services
  • Medical supplies that are necessary related to your emergency evacuation

The benefit often requires that you be at least 100 miles from home. Additionally, if you're hospitalized for a certain period of time (usually more than eight days), the benefit can reimburse a round-trip coach ticket for a friend or relative to come to see you. As ever, benefits vary from card to card.

Below are the three best credit cards for emergency evacuation and transportation coverage.

The Platinum Card® from American Express covers you, your spouse/domestic partner, and legally dependent children for emergency evacuation and related emergency medical services, no matter how much it costs. Your trip must not exceed 90 days.

If a child under 16 is unaccompanied as a result of the emergency, this benefit will pay for a coach flight to get them home — and even pay for them to be escorted if necessary.

This card will cover up to $100,000 for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and/or legally dependent children for emergency evacuation and related emergency medical services. If your name is embossed on the front of the card, you can take full advantage of this perk.

Also, if you die during your trip, you are covered for $1,000 for your remains to be repatriated to your home country.

United Club℠ Infinite Card

The United Club℠ Infinite Card will cover up to $100,000 for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and/or legally dependent children for emergency evacuation and related emergency medical services.

The United Club℠ Infinite Card comes with an annual fee of $525, but that's easily offset by its ongoing benefits, such as:

  • Full-fledged United Club membership (worth $650 per year)
  • Free first and second checked bags on United flights (when you pay any cash portion of your ticket with this card)
  • Priority boarding on United flights
  • Premier Access travel services
  • Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee credit
  • Complimentary Premier upgrades
  • Expanded access to United award flights

This card also earns:

  • 4 miles per dollar on eligible United purchases
  • 2 miles per dollar on travel
  • 2 miles per dollar on dining
  • 1 mile per dollar on everything else

Different Types of Credit Card Travel Insurance Coverage

Before we jump into the best credit cards with travel insurance, let's examine some important definitions. Several types of protections fall under the umbrella of travel insurance:

  • Trip delay insurance — If your covered trip is delayed by a specified number of hours due to a covered reason,  this will cover expenses like meals and lodging (up to a specified maximum).
  • Baggage delay insurance —  This coverage provides reimbursement for essentials like clothes and toiletries if your luggage is delayed on a covered trip.
  • Trip cancellation/interruption insurance — This protects you if you're no longer able to go on a covered trip or your covered trip is interrupted mid-travel for reasons such as illness, injury, weather, or a terrorist incident. This is the type of coverage you'd invoke if you needed to adjust your travel plans due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
  • Lost luggage insurance — If your carry-on or checked baggage goes missing, this coverage could reimburse you up to a specified amount.
  • Rental car insurance — Many credit cards offer either primary or secondary car rental insurance, so you can waive the coverage offered for an additional fee when you rent a car. With primary car rental insurance, in the event of damage due to theft or collision, your credit card coverage will kick in before your personal insurance. With secondary insurance, the coverage kicks in after whatever other insurance is in place. Note that liability coverage isn't included in any credit card auto collision damage waiver.
  • Travel accident insurance  — This is the kind of insurance you'll hopefully never have to use.
  • Emergency evacuation insurance — If you're injured or otherwise incapacitated and need to be evacuated, this coverage would reimburse expenses such as a helicopter evacuation.

For these coverages to kick in, you'll have to pay for your travel with a card that offers trip insurance. In other words, if you book your flight and hotels with a debit card, you won't be eligible for coverage from your credit card.

On that same note, however, redeeming airline miles or bank points for your travel should not disqualify you from coverage — as long as you pay the taxes and fees with your eligible credit card.

Credit Card Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has the most comprehensive travel insurance, covering everything from trip cancellations and interruptions to delayed baggage.

Depending on the card, credit card travel insurance may cover non-refundable flights, delays, cancellations, missed connections, lost luggage, an illness that cuts your travel short, and various other misfortunes.

Most travel rewards credit cards offer some degree of travel insurance. For example, many American Express cards offer trip cancellation and interruption coverage. But the specifics can vary wildly from card to card. The big exception is Citi, which eliminated most elements of its travel coverage from cards several years ago. Don't reserve travel with a Citi card if you want any sort of insurance.

If you have one of the credit cards featured in this guide, you may not need an additional travel insurance policy. However, make sure you read the fine print of your credit card's benefits guides to make sure the travel coverage is sufficient for your needs — and so you don't have any unpleasant surprises like finding out you aren't eligible for coverage when it's too late. On the other hand, if you want some extra peace of mind, or if there's a good chance you may cancel your non-refundable trip, it's worth looking into supplementary travel insurance.

As a general rule, credit card travel insurance applies to the cardholder and the cardholder's immediate family. Refer to your credit card's benefits guide for card-specific rules.

Each credit card travel insurance policy is different, so it's important to look at your specific card's benefits guide to make sure you know exactly what is and what is not covered. And when in doubt, don't be afraid to call the card issuer for clarification. Your credit card travel insurance won't cover a trip that you don't purchase with the card, though in some cases paying for a trip in full or in part with that card's rewards points will qualify you for coverage.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Credit Cards for Travel Insurance

To come up with this list of the best credit cards for travel insurance, we first identified the different types of travel insurance benefits to focus on: trip delay insurance, rental car insurance, trip cancellation/interruption, lost luggage reimbursement, travel accident insurance, and emergency evacuation coverage. We selected the best credit card options for each type of travel insurance by looking through their specific benefits.

Each credit card we review also has a numerical score out of 5. We arrive at each score by following our credit card rating methodology , which factors in rewards, the welcome bonus, annual fee, and more.
