The 4 Best Albania Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Have you got Albania on your bucket list? If not, you should! This incredible country has a rich cultural history and unspoiled natural beauty, from the calm shimmering waters of the Ionian Sea to centuries-old castles and bazaars.  Endless hidden coves, cityside beaches, and wide seaside promenades to its rugged mountains and hillside villages.

The wonderfully dynamic landscape of Albania makes it an exceptionally rewarding place to visit.  Whatever your travel style Albania has something to offer.

A blend of ancient cultural influences echoes across the country, from Greek and Roman to Turkish Ottoman.   History lovers will be in their element with a spectacular collection of castles, from the majestic castle of Berat, occupied by the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans, to the stunning medieval fortress of Rozafa in Skhodra.  Or pay a visit to the archaeological site of Butrint and marvel at the remains of the ancient city, with its earliest evidence dating back to a staggering 19 century BC.

As the country was closed to tourists until 1995, tourism has increased slowly over the decade since Albania opened up to the world.  Albania welcomed 7.5 million tourists in 2022 – many of who combine with a trip to nearby Pristina or Greece , and tourist facilities and general infrastructure have significantly improved.

Albania’s dramatic landscape consists of extremely mountainous terrain, with up to three-fourths of the country covered with sweeping mountains and hills.  Many cities, towns, and villages are built into rising hillsides.  The soaring peaks and dense mountain vegetation add an evocative atmosphere to the country and support a large variety of ecosystems and rich biodiversity.

Unrivaled hiking and trek opportunities are present throughout the country. Mountain chains cover the entire country, and the majestic Albanian Alps are located in the country’s Northern region.

The Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail offers an international hiking experience through the pristine alpine environment linking isolated mountain villages, glacial lakes, forests, and lush vegetation.  Follow shepherd’s trails and meandering footpaths rising to high attitudes revealing expansive views.

Foodies will be in heaven in Albania with a wide variety of traditional and contemporary dishes to try.  With many culinary influences, the food in Albania has a fantastic blend of Mediterranean styles, from Greek and Italian influences to the lasting effect of the 500-year occupation of the country by the Turkish Ottoman Empire.  In coastal regions, fresh seafood is abundant. The food of Albania is truly a delight for the senses! No one will go hungry here!

With an abundance of fresh, local produce grown throughout the country.  Albania is the perfect spot to embark on a tasting tour.  Sample locally produced cheeses, olives, wines, spirits, and pastries and gain insight into the local families that make these delicious products.

Agriculture is essential to the Albanian economy, and small-scale farming takes precedence nationwide and is infinitely more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Agrotourism is booming across the country with the chance to eat amongst the fields where the food is produced and learn the stories behind the farms and vineyards.

Albania Tour Reviews

Albania - tour highlights and travel tips.

A trip to Albania is like a trek through history, with Greek and Roman ruins dating back to the bronze age, Byzantine churches, and castles in abundance.

A trip to Albania is like a trek through history. With Greek and Roman ruins dating back to the bronze age, Byzantine churches, and castles in abundance, Albania offers a veritable smorgasbord for the history buff. Bordering both the Ionian and Adriatic coasts, this beautiful little country offers not only ocean views, but majestic mountain peaks that allow visitors to feel as though they are stepping right out of a postcard.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit Rozafa Castle, and discover the tragic legend of the young woman who was sacrificed that its walls might stand.
  • Discover 60,000 years of history at the Muzeu Hostorik Kombetar.
  • Take a cruise on Skadar, the largest lake in Southern Europe.
  • Seek out the source of the Bistrice river in The Blue Eye, a natural spring of undetermined depths.
  • Explore the Bizantin Monastery of Zvernec on an island in the Narta Lagoon. Yes, it is as beautiful as it sounds!
  • Enjoy the secluded beaches of the Albanian Riviera; while not as “secluded” as they once were, you can still find unspoiled beaches if you look for them. Start your search with Palsa, and you won’t be disappointed.

Travel Tips

  • Public transportation is a bit unconventional, so be flexible with scheduling, and fasten your seat-belt - if there is one. Also, there are no meters, so haggle yourself a good price before you hop onboard.
  • Don’t expect to do much online while on a tour in Albania , the internet is not readily accessible.
  • Leks (Albania’s currency) has changed in value, so if a bill says 100 Leks, it is actually 1000. Make sure you know what the price of things are before you pay for them.
  • If an Albanian offers you something, don’t reject it, it is considered offensive.

Culture and Relax in Albania

Tour Program

This morning after breakfast we drive to Kruja. Kruja a small characteristic town perched on a hill, centre of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Turks under our national hero Scanderbeg. He kept them from crossing into Western Europe for 25 years, thus earning the title “Protector of Christianity” given by the Pope of the time. We will visit the Castle of Kruja, Scanderbeg Museum, one of the best kept museums in the country, a very rich Ethnographic Museum situated on an original house of the 17th century and the Old Bazaar.

Have a characteristic Albanian lunch in Kruja(optional). Return to Durres.

Overnight in Durres, Hotel 4*

We depart for the Monastery of Ardenica. Ardenica Abbey (church) it was built in the Middle ages as argued by a stone in entrance dating back to the 1417. Today inside the church you can admire pictures of 1743-1745 years, by Albanian artists such as Konstandin and Athanos Zografi, as well as Konstandin Shpataraku. Our national Hero Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg married at the chapel of this monastery. Lunch in a traditional restaurant (optional).

After the lunch we depart for the ancient city of Apollonia one of the most important ancient centers in Roman times on the famous Via Egnatia. A testimony to the development of this city in general and its cultural importance in particular is that the Roman Emperor Augustus Octavian himself studied here. We will be able to visit the ruins, including the library as well as a nearby Monastery of the 14th century turned into the archaeological museum where objects from the excavations are displayed. After the visits we go to Vlora. Overnight in Vlora, Hotel 3* Superior.

After breakfast a visit at the independence museum and later on drive to Radhima beach for a day of relax by the Ionian sea. Overnight in Vlora, Hotel 3* Superior.

Early in the morning we depart for Saranda. Drive on the spectacular Albanian Riviera looking down at the Ionian Sea. Lunch Independently in the town of Saranda. In the afternoon beach relaxation at the Ksamil Islands with some of the most beautiful

beaches. Return for dinner at Saranda at a local restaurant. Overnight in Saranda, Hotel 4*

This day after breakfast we will visit the ancient city of Butrint, a world heritage site. The city was first settled by Greek colonists and was continuously inhabited for centuries forming archaeological layers of passing civilizations. It is situated in a peninsula among dense vegetation. Lunch at Butrint or Ksamil ( Optional ). Afternoon relax at Saranda Beach. Dinner and overnight in Hotel 4*

Early in the morning we depart to visit Finiq(Phoenike) the ancient capital of Epirus. Afterwards drive to Gjirokastra a UNESCO site and museum town with a unique and very distinct architecture. On the way visit the natural spring called the blue eye. In Gjirokastra we will visit the Fortress which is used as the venue for the National Festival of Folk Song and Dance and has an arms museum with weapons from WW I. Next we visit the Ethnographic Museum which is also the house the Albanian dictator was born in. Afterwards we check in at the hotel and the group is then left at leisure to explore Gjirokastra. Dinner and overnight in Gjirokastra, Hotel 3*

Today we drive to Berat. Being more than 2400 year old the town it is one of the most attractive towns in Albania. Established in the 3rd century B.C by an Illyrian tribe of central Albania with a protective castle, it was known as the fortified city of Antipatrea. In 1417 the town was occupied by the Turks who build quite a few mosques in the area below the town’s old castle. Berat is situated at the foot of Tomorri Mountain and on the shores of River Osum. It is famous for its white-washed houses with their many windows which, seem to have been build on top of each other, that give it the nickname “town of a thousand windows”. The castle is the only one in Albania and perhaps one of the few in the World that still has houses and inhabitants within its walls. We will visit the Fortress, Onufri Museum and several churches and mosques. Onufri was an Albanian master painter of the 16th century who painted many church icons in Albania and Greece and is famous for its red colour named after him. After visits we will have lunch inside castle, where we will sample the delicious cuisine of this town. Overnight Berat Hotel 3*

Afterwards we will visit the National Historic Museum with artifacts and testimony of our history from prehistoric times to present day. Afterwards we take a walk in the area

known as the Blloku where the Communist elite used to have their villas. Now it is one of the trendiest areas of Tirana full of stylish bars, and clubs for the younger generations. Overnight at Hotel 4*

We had a great 10 days in Albania and Kosovo visiting archaeology, historical, religious and cultural sites. Ervin was an excellent host and superb driver and tour leader. The sites were far more interesting than we even expected, the local guides knowledgeable, and the whole experience really exceptional. From the initial contact with Jenka and Xhensila to our time in the country sight seeing, we were impressed with the quality and professionalism of the tour. Thank you Ervin for keeping us safe and welcoming us so warmly to your beautiful country!

Albania Explorer “Illyria Route”

We covered so much ground and could never have seen so much or get such an insight to Albania trying to do it on our own or without such a diligent guide. Erjan was an excellent, safe driver and manoevred the route and roads expertly, he was also able to tailor the itinerary to our interests. The hotels exceeded expectations and ranged from good to excellent. The Albanian people were friendly and helpful. We loved our tour, without a doubt the cloudless skies throughout played a big part.

Highly enjoyable trip with a strong sense of being well away from the more popular areas and seeing something of a hidden Albania. People were incredibly hospitable and the walking wasn't too strenuous. Highly recommended.

Highlights of Albania

We were very disappointed that the itinerary was changed from a supposedly 10 day tour to an 8 day tour...there was no program on either the first or last day and everything was crammed into 8 days giving us less time to enjoy the attractions. Therefore for 6 days the itinerary altered from the advertised program. We chose tour tour as it had a.good itinerary and were not happy with the outcome.

Enjoyed our time in Albania, except for a bout of food poisoning! There are so many interesting places to see. Really liked most of the accommodations, and Idris was a very good guide/driver.
