MotorGuide Tour Trolling Motor Review
Walker smith.
- Jun 04, 2020
I’ve honestly lost count of the number of trolling motors I’ve had on my bass boat; I think I’m out of room to drill anymore holes for different mounting brackets. While the bow of the poor old boat may look like swiss cheese, this constant swapping and testing has given me a unique opportunity to try a bunch of different trolling motors over the years. I’ve seen some pretty cool advancements and some head scratchers through time.
For the past six months, I’ve been using the newest iteration of the MotorGuide Tour Trolling Motor. I’m a big shallow-water guy, so I’ve been beating the tar out of it. I’ve logged hundreds of hours and have banged it into stumps, grinded it into sandbars and accidentally hit some rocks with it. This trolling motor is built like a tank. I can’t really say it any other way.
I’m going to go over my experiences and share some of the most noteworthy characteristics of this highly anticipated trolling motor.
You’re not going to break it
Now, this isn’t a challenge to drive it full-speed into a bridge piling or something. But under normal and reasonable usage, I can’t possibly see how someone would break the MotorGuide Tour . I don’t baby my trolling motors and admittedly, I’ve been a little rougher on this particular motor on purpose to make absolutely sure it can handle abuse. For the past half-year, it has totally exceeded my expectations.
Just a few weeks ago, I thought I actually broke it, but it turned out to be a really awesome safety feature MotorGuide designed. I had one of my favorite topwater lures snagged on a super-shallow laydown and I kicked that Tour to 10 and raced over to retrieve it. I grinded through pure sand for 15 feet and when the prop bogged all the way down, the motor shut off.
I thought I was going to have to get out and push.
Upon further research, however, I learned that this was supposed to happen to keep me from burning up the motor. To get everything running again, I had to cycle from 10-0 and 0-10 on the foot pedal and everything immediately worked like brand new. So if you’re hard on your trolling motors, I think this intelligent feature will give you some major peace of mind.
360 breakaway system
I have bent shafts on other trolling motors, cracked mounts-you name it. But the 360 breakaway system on the MotorGuide Tour is specifically designed to absorb impacts from any shallow-water accidents.
A few months ago during the prespawn, I was cranking the edge of a stump flat in some really windy conditions. While I was unhooking a bass, the wind blew me onto the stump flat and my trolling motor hit a stump so hard I thought the shaft was going to break. All I could do was put my hands over my ears and grit my teeth.
Except it didn’t break. It didn’t bend. It didn’t sustain any damage whatsoever. That breakaway system allowed my shaft to get, in my best estimation, practically parallel with the keel of my boat. It saved me from a major mess up.
No-flex metal foot pedal
The metal foot pedal is back! The original MotorGuide Tour was a huge hit with anglers and a large part of that was due to its metal foot pedal. Thankfully, MotorGuide decided to bring it back and I couldn’t be happier with it.
It’s simple and it’s tough as nails; that’s exactly what I want in a trolling motor pedal. It’s all you need for shallow bass fishing. The button is nice and big so its easy to locate when you’re not looking and the pronounced speed dial makes very small speed changes quick and easy.
On the heel of the pedal, you’ll notice a small, raised ridge. I had to get used to putting my foot just an inch or two higher on the pedal than I normally do because if I didn’t it would catch my flip flop and make me trip. But this adjustment only took me a few trips to get used to.
True cable steer system
With the explosion in technology over the years, a lot of companies have chosen to go the digital route with trolling motor steering systems. While I’ve used them and liked them, there’s just something about a good ol’ cable steer that’s tough to beat in my opinion. I don’t have to worry about things breaking, shorting out or anything like that. Everytime I get in my boat, I know my trolling motor is going to work like it should.
These stainless steel cables offer extraordinary responsiveness and smoothness, which I have thoroughly enjoyed throughout my testing. My 21-foot boat can snake between boat docks easier than ever before and it’s the quietest trolling motor I’ve had by far.
I think a lot of anglers are going to fall in love with this trolling motor because of the cable steer. It’s nothing fancy but again, you know it’s going to work and work quietly every single time you get on the water.
It has saved my back in a big way
About 18 months ago I was diagnosed with three slipped discs in my back at just 30 years old. There were some mornings my wife would have to help me get out of bed and literally walk me to the bathroom. This was also causing my feet and legs to constantly tingle because something back there was pressing on my nerves. I was in physical therapy twice a week, flipping up and down on an inversion table and all sorts of fun stuff.
You know what the doctor said caused it? Lifting heavy trolling motors so much. I’m not kidding. I fish fast and I move a bunch throughout a day of fishing, so I’m always lifting and lowering my trolling motors.
I can’t tell you how easy it is to lift and lower the new MotorGuide Tour and my back is thankful for it. My pain is very much under control these days and I’m hoping this new trolling motor helps it stay away.
They designed this motor with a Zero-G nitrogen gas spring lift assist system and it is the easiest-to-stow trolling motor I’ve personally used. My tiny wife even lifts it with no problems whatsoever. You don’t have to step on the bracket to make it release, either. It has a Bulldog Locking Latch system that releases very easily on command.
Cable pull is much appreciated
It’s a small feature, but one I’ve really liked throughout my testing. You used to have to buy aftermarket cable pulls for your trolling motor, but MotorGuide included one on the Tour. There have been many times when my old ropes have broken and I just about somersaulted out of the boat. But with this cable pull, I don’t have to worry about that now.
Sharp aesthetics
To be quite honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the looks of this trolling motor on my boat. The new angular head design had me a little nervous going into the installation. As it turns out, however, this is the best looking trolling motor I’ve had on my boat; by a long shot, too.
The motor just looks tough. Everything on it seems to be overbuilt, from the oversized aluminum outer column to the rugged aircraft-grade extruded aluminum mount. And that bright red spring gives it a nice color pop.
When my buddies come to my shop to visit, they always ask me a bunch of questions about the MotorGuide Tour when they see it on my boat. It’s a major attention grabber in the looks department, that’s for sure.
Final impressions
I’d be shocked if MotorGuide didn’t sell a ton of these trolling motors. They’re reliable, they’re simple, they’re easy to lift and they’re amazingly quiet. As an avid shallow-water angler, I sincerely think the MotorGuide Tour has everything I need in a trolling motor.

Comments: This motor itself is great, however the bracket is absolute trash on it. Had mine on for three trips before the latch failed and motor deployed while running across the lake. Lake was rough but nothing I haven't handled before. Contacted Motorguide about warranty replacing my now destroyed motor and their response was "If you knew what you were doing it wouldn't have happened. Also I did have the strap on it as well. Motorguide used to be the best out there but now I would rather replace boards on an ultrex every few months instead

Comments: After buying a Ultrex and fighting it non stop, selling it to get a force which is a pile of junk that stays messed up I have to say getting the tour pro was the best decision ever. spot lock is the most accurate I've used, no more jerky motion like the force, quiet and just hands down the best motor that is a true cable steer system that you dont have to call customer service on daily like the force and Ultrex.
From: Adam: 4/19/21
Comments: I have a 2015 ranger Z118. MotorGuide tour pro fit no problem. Pedal works really smooth and plenty of power with the 82 trust 45 shaft. I have had the old M.G. brute on one of my older bass boat and the old M.G. tour on my 2015 Ranger and I like them but my new tour pro works so grate. Awesome job MotorGuide grate motor. From: Unknown: 2/6/21
Comments: Bad buy if you own a Phoenix. I order one and finally got one. Call tech support had a question regarding assembly. The tech had no idea what I was talking about, because he didn't have a book on the tour pro. After assembly, prepared to drill mounting bolt holes in my Phoenix, turned out the tm sets on the shroud. An 1.5" difference. TM needed to be raised 1.5. The bounce buster being in the center of the bracket will rest on the hull. Contacted Motor Guide support again, they had no idea the bracket would not work on a Phoenix bass boat. Contacted Phoenix techs, they said it wouldn't fit. Motor Guide suggested that Phoenix needs to change their shroud. Really!! I've had motor guide for 30+ years, they have really gone downhill. Bad design! From: Robert: Texas 1/24/21
MotorGuide Tour Pro vs Ultrex (In-Depth Comparison)
- Post author: Tom
- Post last modified: August 12, 2023
The MotorGuide Tour Pro and the Minn Kota Ultrex were designed with a single purpose in mind: to give bass anglers an ultimate fishing machine.
Both the Tour Pro and the Ultrex offer similar thrust levels, precise cable-steer control, and advanced GPS features.
In this article, we discuss both trolling motors and compare their features side-by-side.
Let’s get started!
Table of Contents
Tour Pro and Ultrex Compared
Similar dc motors.
MotorGuide and Minn Kota give slightly different ratings to their 24v and 36v motors.
When comparing different models, you should take the thrust numbers as rough guidance rather than absolute truth.
Both motors come with a variable-speed controller, which delivers power smoothly forward and in reverse. No energy is wasted, and you get more run time off your battery.
The Tour Pro, as well as the Ultrex, can both run on lithium batteries .
Different Shaft Options
The Tour Pro is available in only one shaft length of 45″, next to the three shaft choices on the Ultrex: 45″, 52″, 60″. This makes the Ultrex more suitable for boats with high bows.
We like the Tour Pro for its 360-degree breakaway mount, preventing damage to the motor and shaft if you hit an underwater object.
Minn Kota, on the other hand, offers a lifetime shaft warranty on the Ultrex. That means the company will pay for the replacement if it ever gets damaged, no matter how it happens.
Cable Steer Motors
The Tour Pro and the Ultrex are premium cable-steer trolling motors, extremely popular among bass anglers.
The main characteristic of cable steer trolling motors is that there is a direct link between the foot pedal and turning the motor.
This makes them very responsive and popular with bass fishermen, who need to maneuver around shallow cover quickly.
An added benefit is that you always know which way the motor is pointing with cable-steer, which is extremely useful when fishing.
Lighter Steering on the Ultrex
Both motors have an excellent cable-steer system, but we believe Minn Kota has the edge over MotorGuide:
The Ultrex has a superb hybrid steering system, combining cable and electric steering, making steering pretty much effortless.
You get the responsiveness and precision of cable control plus the electric power steering with a remote—the best of both worlds.
The Tour Pro has a more classic cable-steer system, which has a different, stiffer feeling and requires a bit more effort to spin your boat around.
i-Pilot vs PinPoint GPS
Minn Kota’s i-Pilot and MotorGuide’s PinPoint are GPS trolling motor systems that you can control with a wireless remote.
With both GPS systems, you can steer, control speed, spot-lock onto fishing spots, and “jog” in any direction, just by pressing a button.
The Ultrex comes with an i-Pilot as standard, but you can upgrade to an i-Pilot Link.
i-Pilot Link can do everything i-Pilot does but offers extra features, including integration with a Humminbird fish finder. Unlike the standard i-Pilot, i-Pilot Link comes with a touchscreen remote.
Sonars and Transducers
What’s great about these motors is that the transducers are fully integrated with the lower unit. The wiring runs through the shaft, and the connectors are shielded to minimize interference.
The Ultrex includes a Universal Sonar 2 as standard. As the name suggests, you can use this sonar with various fish finders such as Humminbird, Lowrance, Garmin, and Eagle.
You can upgrade your Ultrex to MEGA Down and Side Imaging for additional features.
The Tour Pro doesn’t have any transducer in its standard model, but you can order one with HD+ universal sonar.
The Tour Pro can be controlled using a Lowrance fish finder. For down imaging, you can use more brands: Lowrance, Humminbird, and Garmin.
Easier Lifting On The Tour Pro
Minn Kota tries hard to make stowing and deploying their motors as easy as possible.
The Ultrex has a stainless steel nitrogen gas spring which makes lifting and otherwise heavy motor much easier.
The Tour Pro comes with a Zero-G lift assist, which MotorGuide claims to be 40% easier to use than the systems used by the competition.
Both the MotorGuide Tour Pro and the Minn Kota Ultrex are excellent cable-steer trolling motors.
Taking all the features into account, the Tour Pro is slightly better than the Ultrex, mostly thanks to its accurate PinPoint GPS, Lowrance compatibility, and the breakaway mount protecting your investment.
However, if you prefer Minn Kota i-Pilot GPS, especially i-Pilot Link, and are a fan of Humminbird fish finders, you will love the Ultrex!

Motorguide Tour Pro Review; Revised & Edited THIS IS A CORRECTED VERSION OF MY PAST REVIEW. First I need to apologize to MG and the members here for posting incorrect information. Even though I read the manual 3 times and contacted customer service concerning what I thought was a failing in engineering of the TM. It in fact was not true.
The motor does make a very slight squeal when turning more than 90 degrees and any power setting above 4 there is a definite harmonic hum to the motor that can be heard on deck. The Tour Pro top speed for me was 2.8-3.5mph. Which is a huge improvement over the 1.8-2.2mph I was getting. Reporting the gps problem;

Hey Guys, Bill Siemantel here with MotorGuide and we want to catch you up with my almost 3 year on the water testing of the MG Tour Pro 109 36volt trolling motor. Check out how cool this thing looks on my Bass Cat Caracal and then let's talk why this is the best trolling motor I have ever used.
I did have a Terrova on it a couple of years ago, and sold it cause I didn't like how slow the turning was, and couldn't stand the foot pedal. The remote worked well, but again, turning was slow. Really want an Ultrex, but that is just not in the budget, was looking at the Motorguide tour pro, but i can not find any decent reviews of it. any ...

The Tour Pro is the top-of-the-line trolling motor for Motorguide. It's crazy powerful, connects to any brand of fish finder, and is super simple to operate. My favorite feature of any trolling motor is PinPoint GPS, Motorguide's version of Min Kota Spot-Lock. Motorguide vs. Minn Kota Spot-Lock are very comparable.
Now I'm onto the new tour pro. I can honestly say that this new motorguide is by far the nicest trolling motor to use. Bracket, lift assist, foot pedal feel, spot lock all top notch. By far the quietest steering of the spotlock motors, which is important to me. Can't say how it will be long term yet of course but it cant be worse than an ultrex ...
The Tour Pro was released in January 2020 and it is arguably one of the best motors on the market today. However, there have been reports of problems with its Pinpoint GPS, resulting in a recall, as well as other issues with latching and transducer interference. In this article, we discuss the most common problems associated with the Tour Pro.
To top it all off, the MotorGuide Tour Pro Trolling Motoris up to 9lbs lighter overall than comparative models from other brands. Features: -Only true cable steer with GPS anchor. -Most powerful Zero-G lift-assist system. -Tour-tested durability. -360 Breakaway system. -No-Flex metal foot pedal. -Oversized metal outer column.

Movement of the motor is somewhat smooth, but you can feel that you are forcing an internal motor to move without power. No nearly as smooth as a non-motorized cable steer motor. Be SURE to verify the foot pedal isn't flipped causing a twist in the cables. Proper foot pedal tension should be adjusted in 1/4 of a turn increments. When the pedal has less between 1/8-1/4" of pedal play with the Breaker Off/MotorGuide Unplugged. The pedal is in proper manual adjustment for the current cable layout.
