Hop on a helicopter to enjoy a bird's eye view of Kochi this New Year

Kochi's cityscape comprising buildings stacked neatly next to each other; natural scenery of the backwaters and the sea; concrete jungles and railway tracks and the Metro line crisscrossing the roads is a feast for the eyes. Residents, as well as visitors, have so far been able to enjoy these sights from a ground level. However, here is a chance to get thrilling views of these attractions from the air.

A helicopter tour has been arranged from the helipad near the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor in the city on December 31, January 1 and 2 which would enable an aerial view of Kochi. The trip, organised by Heli Kerala, would last 10 minutes and follow all COVID-19-related protocols.

The helicopter would take passengers to a height of 500-1,000 feet above the ground from where they can relish a bird’s eye view of the city. Piloted by Jiji Kumar, who belongs to Kerala, the helicopter can seat six persons. Free travel is offered for children below three years of age.

“Our aim is to provide everyone an opportunity to enjoy the sights of the city from the air,” said John Thomas, managing partner of Enhance Aviation, under which Heli Kerala operates.

“We expect a large number of people to utilize this chance,” he added.

Other trips Apart from the aerial tour above Kochi, Heli Kerala operates services to Sabarimala. For this trip, copters would take pilgrims from Kochi to the helipad at Nilakkal, from where a vehicle is arranged for travelling to Pamba. The copter would wait at Nilakkal till the pilgrims return after offering prayers at the Sabarimala Temple.

On demand, Heli Kerala’s copters would also fly to tourism destinations such as Wayanad, Munnar and Thekkady. A pilgrim trip to Guruvayur too is available.

Minister Mohammed Riyas launches Kerala's heli-tourism initiative

Kochi: Handing over tickets to the first batch of four passengers, Tourism Minister P A Mohammed Riyas on Saturday formally opened Kerala government's milestone heli-tourism venture that strings together the state's top destinations by air.

The imaginative project has the potential for big-time private investment in the state, which has come out with the country's pioneering heli-tourism policy, according to an official release here.

The venture comes after Kerala Tourism's famed initiatives such as houseboats and caravans, the minister pointed out at the helitaxi inaugural function held at Nedumbassery, where the Cochin International Airport is located.

At CIAL Academy adjacent to the airport, the minister released a microsite that provides information on the various travel packages offered by the heli operators along with the details of the trips and ways to book them.

The endeavour enables tourists to save time during their visits to destinations. As Kerala's population density is three times the national average, travellers may sometimes face a few hiccups with surface travel in the state. "Thus heli-tourism will be of immense benefit," the minister said.

As the project on PPP mode picks up, authorities will lay new helipads in prime spots and widen the network, the release said. PTI

Kerala’s tourism minister PA Mohamed Riyas formally launched Kerala government’s heli-tourism venture . He inaugurated the initiative by handing over tickets to the first batch of four passengers. The project strings together the state’s top destinations by air.  

According to the official statement, the project has the potential for big-time private investment in the state.

The plan utilises existing operational helipads and is looking at potential tie-ups with private landowners to expand the network.

Kochi is slated to be the heli-tourism hub. The project will connect destinations such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Jatayu Rock, the scenic backwaters of Kumarakom and Alappuzha. It will also connect other destinations in various places including northern Kasaragod in the initial phase.

Travel made easy.

Based on research, the government will guide stakeholders in initiatives promoting heli tourism but will not engage in direct services, operations, or provide financial support, he said in a statement.

The minister clarified that while ‘helitaxis’ may cater to travellers looking to explore multiple destinations within a short timeframe, the government does not intend to develop airstrips at present.

The seating capacity would vary between 6-12 passengers based on helicopter models. The costs would depend on flying time and operator charges, with a competitive pricing model, he said. The minister also assured that operators would comply with aviation regulations. 

The minister also hinted at potential expansion in the project’s second phase. 

On the possibilities for public-private partnership, Riyas said the government is currently only playing a facilitative role.
