Thank you for checking in during our stay – I am having the time of my life!!! The people here are wonderful, the instruction excellent, the lesson horses superb, the food delicious, the rooms comfortable and the scenery beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever had such a wonderful vacation!

I would only recommend one thing, when independent women like ourselves tell you they’re taking the train from Lisbon to Evora, tell them DONT DO IT!!! Lol The ticket desk failed to inform us that there were several changes of trains along the way. Our first leg came to its end and the conductor kicked us (politely) off the train! Fortunately, Rita at Monte Velho immediately arranged for a taxi the take us to Monte Velho, so no harm, no foul. But we’ve learned our lesson!

Otherwise it has been splendid!

Choose from 38 trips and 10 destinations in Europe

The concept of the equestrian riding tour has had a glorious revival in Europe since the end of World War II. Unlike the United States, countries such as France, Spain, Italy , and Greece have kept open many rights-of-way for riders which offer opportunities to ride for weeks away from traffic in beautiful areas of great historic interest. In this part of the world it was only a few decades before the war that people traveled on horseback from inn to inn and town to town. In France many inns and restaurants are still called relais (relays) where travelers could find food, lodging, a place to keep their horses and often fresh mounts. Since one of the main attractions of a European visit is to see and feel the rich history, it is entirely appropriate to travel and discover these wonderful treasures on horseback as people did when these castles, walled towns and cathedrals were being created.

Northern Europe has a vibrant horse culture and some excellent places to ride with friendly, English speaking people, beautiful scenery and fine horses.  Irish horses are famous the world over and Ireland has ideal trails for riding, comfortable inns and wonderful mounts. If you are interested in jumping , there are extensive and varied obstacle courses where you can hone your skills. In Iceland the amazingly powerful, gated Icelandic horses, which have been perfected for over a millennium, will carry you smoothly over a fantastic landscape of hot springs, fjords, volcanoes and rushing rivers. You can also ride in Cornwall  through the unspoiled English rural countryside.

Another advantage of visiting Europe on horseback is that horses greatly facilitate local contact. People who ride up on a horse are considered special and somehow more trustworthy than those who arrive in droves by bus. Riders destroy the image many foreigners hold of ugly Americans driving up in big cars and talking very loudly in basic English to make themselves understood. Horses help break the international ice and there is always a common bond between horse lovers around the world. On horseback one has the time to travel in depth without rushing from place to place by car and airplane. The cultural value of a trip is not determined by the number of attractions listed in the guide book one manages to see by racing around.

For riders interested in honing their dressage skills a visit to Spain or Portugal is must. Excellent instruction, the long standing ties to the tradition of the discipline and phenomenal schoolmaster horses make our dressage programs an opportunity that should not be missed.

Horseback rides in Greece , France, Spain , Italy and Portugal are usually organized so that on moving days riders can go from inn to inn or castle to castle each day and have their baggage transferred and waiting at the next night’s stop. It enables guests to move out at all paces during the day unencumbered by baggage. A delicious picnic lunch is usually served at midday along the route and both riders and horses can take a rest before heading out for the afternoon. Usually stops are made along the way to visit old castles, walled towns and other points of interest. Groups are kept small and seldom have more than a dozen riders.

What made the trip for us was the family, who were FABULOUS. They made the ride very special and personal, and got us away from the crowds whenever they could by leading us on shepherds' trails. We saw one or two other groups riding with outfitters along the way, who were clearly being 'packaged', and thanked our lucky stars that we had found Equitours.

Nicknamed the “Emerald Isle”, Ireland is quite the place to visit. You’ll be astounded by the lush green landscape interspersed with castles and ruins from ancient times. This island has so much beauty and adventure to offer, which is why it’s the perfect destination for a horseback riding tour.

Horse Tours Club provides fantastic riding vacations in Ireland where you can truly experience the countryside.

Irish Equestrian History and Culture

Horses have been in Ireland for a long time. It’s believed they migrated from Asia, across Europe, and into Ireland before Ireland broke off from the mainland more than 10,000 years ago.

The people who lived in the area domesticated horses thousands of years ago; remains found throughout the country suggest before 2000 B.C. Tales and myths from the past include men riding horse-drawn chariots, Celtic horse goddesses, and a creature known as a Pooka, which often disguises itself as a large, white horse.

In one such tale, a man brags that his wife can run faster than the king’s horses. Graciously, the king offers to allow the woman to race instead of executing the man. The pregnant woman is met with heckling as she prepares to race, but when the race begins she runs faster than the horses, finishing before the steeds get halfway. After finishing, the woman calmly gives birth to twins, and the bet is revealed as a setup. The woman turns out to be the Irish goddess of horses, Macha.

As evidenced by their history and folklore, horses were an important part of Irish history, and they continue to have an impact on Irish culture today. Breeding is one of Ireland’s foremost industries, and horse races are popular events.

Irish Breeds

The Connemara pony, the Irish draught horse, and the Irish Hunter are the most famous Irish horses.

Purely Irish in origin, the Connemara pony is the smallest of the pure Irish horse breeds. It originates from Galway. This breed is known for its reliability, surefootedness, and athleticism. It has a good disposition and a great love of food. Known today as a sports pony, this breed is versatile, able to compete in show jumping, dressage, and eventing, and it has the stamina for endurance riding.

The Irish Draught horse was developed primarily for farming, but today they are often crossed with Thoroughbreds and warmbloods and used as a sport horse. They excel at eventing and show jumping. The breed has a good temperament and a willing nature. The Irish Draught is considered a great foundation breed that will produce both leisure and performance horses when it’s crossed with other breeds.

The Irish Hunter, also called the Irish Sport horse, is a cross between the Irish Draught and the Thoroughbred. It’s a warmblood sporting horse used for dressage, show jumping, and eventing. This breed has great speed, athleticism, and a well-balanced temperament. With about 2,000 purebreds in the world, the Irish Sport Horse is considered a rare breed.
