Paramount+ takes over from Crave as Canadian streaming home of Star Trek

P aramount+ will become the exclusive Canadian streaming home of Star Trek  content going forward, ending a long-running licensing agreement with Bell’s Crave.

The shift has already begun with  Star Trek: Discovery  and  Picard  recently having left Crave, plus Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  exiting the service on August 1st. Below is the full schedule for when other  Star Trek content will also leave Crave:

  • August 1st, 2023 — Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Seasons 1-2)
  • August 8th, 2023 — Star Trek: The Next Generation (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 15th, 2023 — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 22nd, 2023 — Star Trek Voyager (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 29th, 2023 — Star Trek Enterprise (Seasons 1-4)
  • September 5th, 2023 — Star Trek: The Animated Series (Seasons 1-2), Star Trek: The Original Series (Seasons 1-3)

Under Bell’s agreement with Paramount, new episodes of  Strange New Worlds  will continue to release on Crave for now. However, future original titles, like the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy  series and Michelle Yeoh-led film  Star Trek: Section 31 , will premiere exclusively on Paramount+. The fifth and final season of  Star Trek: Discovery  will also stream only on Paramount+ and not Crave.

While Crave is losing practically all of its Star Trek  content, Bell will retain the exclusive broadcast rights to the franchise in Canada. This means that all of these shows will continue to air on the Bell-owned CTV Sci-Fi network, which is also available through CTV’s website and the mobile app.

As part of the shift to Paramount+, Paramount Canada is preparing a few different promotional events. The company says there will be a special  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds activation at Toronto’s Fan Expo Canada from August 24th to 27th, while Vancouver and Calgary fans can stay tuned for “exclusive screenings” on September 8th (‘Star Trek Day’).

Paramount+ is adding its “ Star Trek ” titles to the Canadian version of the streaming service. The company confirmed it is the new streaming home to more than 800 episodes of the iconic TV franchise, as well as 12 feature films.

As of Aug. 1, Paramount+ hosts the first season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” as well as all episodes to date of Season 2. However, new episodes will continue to air on CTV Sci-Fi Channel Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

The announcements come in conjunction with the fan-forward events at Toronto’s Fan Expo in late August as well as exclusive screenings planned in Vancouver and Calgary on Star Trek Day on Sept. 8.

“’’Star Trek’ is one of the most iconic TV brands in the world,” Katrina Kowalski, vice president of content at Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada, said in a statement. “In the decades since the first series premiered in 1966, the franchise has evolved, growing and inspiring its audience with expansive storytelling and a diverse cast of characters. We are so thrilled Paramount+ is now the Canadian streaming destination for the catalogue.”

Previously, “Strange New Worlds,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” “Discovery,” “Picard” and “The Next Generation” were available to stream on Bell Media’s streaming service, Crave. New episodes of “Picard” and “Discovery” also aired on CTV Sci-Fi Channel.

The fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” will only be available on CTV Sci-Fi, and not Crave, when it returns to television.

The “Star Trek” licensing shift comes on the heels of Crave’s overall deal with Showtime ending in December 2022. (Paramount Global owns both Showtime and Paramount+). At the time, library properties such as “Dexter” and “The Affair” shifted to Paramount+.

Bell Media previously confirmed future Showtime programming will stream on Paramount+ in Canada, however new seasons of Showtime series that are already available on Crave and are in production (such as “Billions” and “Yellowjackets”) will continue to be available on Crave.

Paramount+ Becoming The Streaming Home Of Star Trek In Canada

star trek leaving crave canada

| August 1, 2023 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 22 comments so far

Star Trek has been a part of the global expansion of Paramount+ with the exception of Canada, where until last month , Crave handled streaming of Star Trek, including the new original shows. That all changes this month as Paramount+ Canada is taking over Trek streaming for Canada.

Star Trek on Paramount+ in Canada

Today Paramount+ announced the service is now the streaming home of Star Trek in Canada. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launches on the platform today with all of season 1 and the first 8 episodes of season 2. The musical episode “Subspace Rhapsody” arrives on Thursday. The service already includes all available seasons of Discovery , Lower Decks , and Picard . In addition, Paramount+ Canada is currently the home to all the Star Trek feature films with Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Cut returning to the platform on September 5.

Over the coming weeks, the rest of the television franchise will be added…

  • August 8 – The Next Generation (Seasons 1 – 7)
  • August 15 – Deep Space Nine (Seasons 1 – 7)
  • August 22 – Voyager (Seasons 1 – 7)
  • August 29 – Enterprise (Seasons 1 – 4)
  • September 5 – The Original Series (Seasons 1 – 3) and The Animated Series (Seasons 1 & 2)

NOTE: TrekMovie is confirming if or when Star Trek: Short Treks will be added to Paramount+ Canada. And like elsewhere, Paramount+ Canada does not include Star Trek: Prodigy. Paramount Global is currently seeking a new streaming partner for that animated series.

Here is the new promo for Paramount+ Canada as the home of Star Trek (video only visible within Canada)

“Star Trek is one of the most iconic TV brands in the world,” said Katrina Kowalski, Vice President, Content, Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada in a statement. “In the decades since the first series premiered in 1966, the franchise has evolved, growing and inspiring its audience with expansive storytelling and a diverse cast of characters. We are so thrilled Paramount+ is now the Canadian streaming destination for the catalogue.”

The fourth season of Lower Decks will debut on September 7 with the fifth and final season of Discovery debuting in early 2024, same as with Paramount+ in the USA. Paramount+ Canada will also be the home of the upcoming Starfleet Academy series and the Section 31 movie event starring Michelle Yeoh.

See the Paramount+ Canada Lower Decks season 4 trailer below…

To help celebrate Paramount+ in Canada as the streaming home of Star Trek fans will be able to engage with the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds activation at Toronto’s FAN EXPO from August 24 to 27 and Vancouver and Calgary fans should stay tuned for details on exclusive screenings on Star Trek Day, September 8.

Canadians can subscribe to Paramount+ online at ParamountPlus.com or via the Paramount+ app for iOS and Android and other smart TVs and connected devices. Monthly subscriptions are only $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.

Actor Talks “Authentic” Scotty On ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’; Season 3 Production Passes Milestone

It’s aboot time buddy!

I always had issues with the streaming quality on Crave so I don’t mind the switch.

What about the Ready Room? Will it be available on the platform? Or the very least ,will it no longer be geoblocked on their youtube channel? It’s on startrek.com and some social media but its often late and harder to cast on TV.

Ready Room is on P+ in the USA, so it should be part of P+ Canada. I don’t see why they wouldn’t offer it.

Can anyone confirm if audio description is available on Star Trek content on Paramount plus Canada? Crave has it on the newer shows and they credit the description service as being provided to them by “Paramount plus” so I’m assuming yes?

Glad to read CTV Sci Fi Channel will continue to show Star Trek SNW. The channel is currently also the home of TOS, TNG, Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise ( as well as another franchise – SG1) and the streaming site is still showing Picard and Discovery! I assume the writing is on the wall that eventually P+ will be the exclusive home of legacy and NuTrek north of the border. Let’s hope that is later rather than sooner.

We still have TNG DS9 VOY TOS ENT and TAS on Netflix too! Dunno for how long tho.

Still envious that they don’t have to buy a streaming service for this. In that aspect, Canadians have a superior situation.

You need a cable subscription though. And you have to deal with commercials.

I realize that. But that’s what a DVR is for. And while I do stream some stuff I still find just going through cable to be the superior delivery system.

Some forget you have to pay for the premium cable package to get the Sci Fi channel and even a la carte it is $5 a month with commercials, so you either pay big cable OR Paramount. Pick your poison!

I guess… But if you are getting cable already it’s the better option.

Like others have said, the channel costs extra in a cable package, plus you get commercials. Also, unless you have a cable company that offers on-demand shows, you have to wait until the evening to watch it.

And there’s not much else on it (Superman and Lois, Doom Patrol, the Ark, Wynona Earp) other than Trek and Stargate reruns.

I’d rather get Paramount+.

I’m hoping the SNW season will finish off on Crave. I don’t want to buy another subscription.

As I’ve said, DVR’s work. Also there is literally nothing else I look at on P+ than Trek. And there is other stuff on cable I look at. I wouldn’t mind waiting for Thursday evening to avoid the hassle of streaming.

Any news on the French audio? So far none of the Star Trek shows on P+ have it. My mom was in the middle of watching Voyager and now, she’s crying.

Interesting. I wonder how long it’ll be before they’ll pull shows from CTV Sci-Fi eventually, which means I will have to subscribe to another streaming service (I never bothered with crave). Bell Media owns Crave and CTV so I wouldn’t be surprised if that eventually happens.

Also, does this mean NETFLIX is losing Star Trek in Canada?

The U.S.’s revenge for Moosehead.

Anything is better than Crave for the new stuff, but would be sad to see TNG leave Netflix.

Has anyone tried Paramount+ yet in Canada for the new shows? Picard season 3 was awesome but the compression on Crave is terrible. I want to see it in 4K proper – if it’s even available in 4K

Does anyone know if Paramount+ is worth it? I’ve read terrible reviews about the app itself. Things like how it’s a hassle to unsubscribe; constant “this video is not available outside your country” messages (despite you being IN your country) and having to uninstall and reinstall every time you try to view. I’m not terribly tech-minded, but could this be solved by subscribing through Amazon Prime instead? Either way, I think this’ll be a case where I get it for just a month, binge, cancel and wait until the next new season of a particular Trek shows up.

I sub through the Prime channel because I hate the P+ app on Fire TV, and while it’s easier to use, a lot of content is missing without explanation, including Star Trek. Right now, Lower Decks is missing season 3. When Voyager was last on there, it was missing 3 seasons. Enterprise was also missing a season. I wish we got some explanation for this, as apart from the occasional Prime Day promotion, it costs full price.

Aaand that will end my crave sub and I’ll be back to download copies. I’m not paying for another stream service just for trek. P+ does not have enough to keep me.

Update (August 1, 2023): Paramount+ has confirmed it will be the streaming home of the Star Trek franchise in Canada going forward – all of the movies are already there, and all series are in the process of being added. Only Brave New Worlds remains available on Crave for the moment, but it will be removed in early September, shortly after the current (second) season ends.

CTV Sci-Fi will continue to air future seasons of the series it had already been airing, such as Discovery and Brave New Worlds (including limited streaming rights on the CTV website and app), as well as select seasons of current and past series, but those episodes will also be available on Paramount+ going forward, and any new series and specials will be exclusive to the latter.

Our (lightly edited) previous article, which we hope to fully update in the near future, follows.

Since its origins as a primetime drama starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy airing during from 1966 to 1969, Star Trek has become a worldwide phenomenon spanning multiple movies, TV series, and other media.

A new generation of Star Trek TV series, commissioned by the CBS All Access streaming service (rebranded in March 2021 as Paramount+), began with the 2017 launch of Star Trek: Discovery , with other programs launching since then including Picard , Short Treks , and Lower Decks , with more in the pipeline.

Current series: As of August 2020, all in-production Star Trek TV series – including Star Trek: Discovery ; Star Trek: Short Treks; Star Trek: Picard ; and animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks – air in Canada on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly Space), with new episodes posted the same day as their U.S. release. Subscribers to that basic cable channel can also access episodes on-demand and through the CTV app for a limited time after airing. The same new episodes are also made available on Bell's Crave streaming service either the same day or the day after (new episodes of Discovery are currently posted 24 hours after they air on CTV Sci-Fi).

Classic series: Episodes of classic Star Trek series – including the original series, The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise – are available in Canada on both Crave and Netflix , in addition to regular airings on CTV Sci-Fi.

Movies: Films from both the original film series (with Shatner, Nimoy, and/or Patrick Stewart) and the " Kelvin Timeline" series (starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto) have been available at various points on either Netflix and/or Prime Video. However, at present, there is no consistent subscription streaming home for these movies in Canada.

Of course, it is possible to rent or buy digital copies of any of these movies for a separate fee, through a number of different marketplaces – including the Apple TV / iTunes Store , Google Play TV & Movies , cable on-demand services, and even the aforementioned Prime Video .

I heard some of the new shows were also on CBS All Access / Paramount+, or Netflix, or Prime Video?

While Paramount+ (known prior to 2021 as CBS All Access) is also available in Canada, it did not launch here until after Discovery had debuted. By that point, CBS had already reached international rights deals for the series with Bell Media and others, and to date it has decided to maintain that pattern for subsequent spinoffs.

As a result – although the Star Trek franchise and all of the series are owned by ViacomCBS – due to the terms of those rights sales, Canadians cannot currently access any Star Trek series on the Canadian version of Paramount+ . This might change eventually, but it's unlikely to change before Discovery ends its run at the very earliest.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video came on as international co-producers for Discovery and Picard , respectively, which means that they distribute each series in all countries outside the U.S. and Canada. At this time, we have no reason to expect that they will rerun the series at a future date in Canada (or the U.S. for that matter).

If it moves to P+can I will just find it elsewhere as I will not pay for another platform or add-on. It's too bad as it was great on Crave and the only reason I have crave

Discovery's deal was different from the other shows. Discovery aired on CTV Sci-Fi first then appeared on Crave 24 hours later, while all the other shows have been on Crave at 3AM (Eastern) Thrusday, then CTV Sci-Fi at night the same day.

The most likely scenario of what is happening is that Bell Media's contract with CBS is set to expire and has not been renewed. In general, most deals in the television industry last five to six years, and September 2023 will mark six years since Discovery first aired (though has Tuskin38 pointed out above, CBS/Bell's deal for all Trek shows after Discovery was slightly modified allowing new episodes to be available on Crave the same day as in the US). It's almost certain the Trek library is going to move to Paramount+ Canada this summer and SNW will also move over after its current season is finished airing. This is a similar approach to what CBS is doing with the Trek library in European markets. I also suspect it's just a matter of time before older Trek series are removed from Netflix Canada as well.
Also, what made the Bell deal so unique is that it was perhaps the only company with a network actually broadcasting new Trek rather than just streaming it. I've always wondered why CBC doesn't just broadcast older seasons of its Trek shows, as it could be a way to broaden their viewing numbers and help people discover it .

CBC has nothing to do with Trek. Not in decades.

Well according to Trekmovie , All Modern Star Trek will still air on CTV Sci-fi and stream.on the CTV app. (For Ctv Sci-fi subscribers) Ofcouse though, CTV app is like Pluto , that it is add supported. But atleast it will still be available for those subscribed to CTV Sci-fi. And even though it's not specifically mentioned in the article, the Legacy shows may also still air on CTV Sci-fi and be available on CTV app/CTV on demand with a CTV Sci-fi cable subscription. Luckily I still have CTV Sci-fi due to a legacy package from my condo's bulk cable subscription. And Ofcouse the legacy trek shows are still on Netflix Canada ( for now) For me personally, I have access to Trek in a hodgepodge kind of way. Got TOS and TNG on blu ray. All the Trek movies from iTunes. DS9 and Voyager digitaly saved from dvds and apparently will still have access to modern Trek on CTV app and CTV Sci-fi. Only Enterprise, I will loose on demand access to once it leaves Netflix unless it's on ctv app. I plan to slowly purchase more Trek shows on blu ray or itunes to guard against fleeting streaming rights. https://trekmovie.com/2023/07/03/st...ada-will-continue-broadcasting-on-ctv-sci-fi/

Currently Paramount plus Canada has Discovery and Picard. It had everything a short while back cuz I used to watch DS9 on there. What is going on?
The message on the show pages that said the shows were leaving Crave in July is now gone. This is very confusing.
Could it be they managed to re-negotiate a deal?

Yeah, that definitely clarifies things. With that said, I think as Canadians, we've been incredibly lucky for having Trek on Space/CTV Sci-Fi/Crave for as long as we have. It's the end of an era.

  21. So if Crave has all the Star Trek TV shows, will they will provide
