River cruises are known for offering a romantic vibe as you sail through Europe and other exotic destinations while eating plenty of fine food and savoring free-flowing wines . The chances for historical and cultura l exploration also  makes  these voyages enriching experiences.

River cruises are growing in popularity, too. And as cruise lines seek to entice a broader variety of travelers, they have begun offering new fitness options and other activities.

Two lines are leading the way with their innovative menus of exciting and active choices for passengers. AmaWaterways features a Wellness Program and Emerald Waterways offers its EmeraldACTIVE choices.

Let’s take a look to see how these two cruise wellness programs compare and why you might enjoy them.

Fitness on the Rivers: Emerald Waterways vs. AmaWaterways | 2

Dedicated Staff

An Activity Manager leads the way for Emerald Waterways’  EmeraldACTIVE program. This position serves as a kind of co-cruise director. The Activity Manager is a versatile performer who runs an entertainment and wellness-focused activities throughout your cruise . Emerald Waterways ditched the traditional piano player in the lounge in favor of a staffer who can offer a broader range of entertainment options. The line’s Activity Managers, for example, all are singers and dancers who give cabaret performances a couple of times during each cruise .

AmaWaterways ’ Wellness Program features Wellness Hosts who design the fitness activities on and off the ship . The Wellness Hosts are professional trainers who lead classes, outings, and sessions for cruisers looking to keep up with their workouts or for those looking to try something new.

The fitness-focused river cruise programs offer a range of exercise classes during each sailing.

The Fitness Stuff

Emerald Waterways’  EmeraldACTIVE program offers a selection of exercise classes throughout the cruise . You might get a morning stretch or yoga class. In the afternoon, you could see a Pilates or aqua aerobics class on the schedule. Also, depending on the itinerary, the Activity Manager might organize an interesting short hike or post-lunch walk in a port stop that offers a good opportunity for these activities.

AmaWaterways’ Wellness Program has a much wider range of workout options and more frequent classes. The Wellness Host offers five to seven activities each day that you can join, including spin classes (on AmaMagna), resistance training, yoga, Pilates, morning stretch, post-lunch walks on deck and jogging opportunities in port.

The  AmaWaterways  Wellness Hosts are also available for personal training sessions.

Both cruise lines carry a fleet of bicycles for use during your voyage.

Facilities and Equipment

Emerald Waterways’ ships have small gyms. These small rooms have a set of light dumbbells, a recumbent bike, and a rowing machine. The Activity Manager doesn’t hold classes in there. Instead, you do morning stretch, yoga and aqua aerobics at the indoor pool area. This is a wonderfully large space.

Other wellness-focused activities like golf putting, soft  petanque  and Pilates are held on the Sun Deck.

Cruise Compete

AmaWaterways has treadmills on its ships, and space is a little bit larger, so some classes like abs and core-focused sessions can be held in the fitness centers. The line’s  AmaMagna ship that sails on the Danube  River has a big gym as part of its Zen Wellness Studio. This facility has a studio space for classes, and spin classes are held on the deck space just outside.

Fitness classes also are held on the Sun Deck on all  AmaWaterways  ships .

Both Emerald Waterways and  AmaWaterways  carry bikes onboard. Passengers can join guided biking excursions or sign them out for personal use.

Fitness on the Rivers: Emerald Waterways vs. AmaWaterways | 2

Number of Ways to Play

Emerald Waterways’  EmeraldACTIVE  program takes it beyond fitness for a full-fledged lineup of fun stuff to keep cruisers busy and entertained throughout each day of their cruise . It’s about offering variety.

Aside from the fitness classes, the Activity Manager leads games, contests, and entertainment. Soft petanque and golf putting contests take place on the Sun Deck. In the lounge, you can join afternoon dance classes or trivia sessions. Evenings bring the cabaret shows featuring popular music of the Rat Pack or Neil Diamond, for examples, or karaoke or disco nights with DJ music.

AmaWaterways’ Wellness Program is firmly about exercise and wellness options. So, the activities and sessions we’ve already mentioned are the large bulk of what is available on the daily program. But the Wellness Hosts also may offer line dancing classes and could give a talk on wellness. They are always available to give advice or instruction to help you keep up with any new practices or workouts when you get back home after your cruise .

Fitness on the Rivers: Emerald Waterways vs. AmaWaterways | 2

Bottom Line

The  EmeraldACTIVE program is ideal for cruisers seeking a great mix of options to keep them entertained on their daily cruise program. It’s a good fit for travelers who are young and young at heart. The EmeraldACTIVE  program is a welcome departure from the traditional river cruise  offerings  that leave you with little to do on the ship other than watch the scenery (which is great, of course), read a book or take a nap during your afternoons of sailing.

Nighttime also comes alive in a different way with this program, as passengers get to play together and know each other in a more energetic way as led by the Activity Manager. The workouts are fairly gentle and accessible to all ages and abilities.

The  AmaWaterways ’ Wellness Program is a fantastic choice for the growing batch of travelers who are becoming more intensely focused on their fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. The workouts can be quite challenging (there are variations offered for all abilities), and the program offers cruisers a chance to easily keep up with their regimen while enjoying their vacations .

The program also is a great entryway for the workout-curious to have access to the needed guidance and expertise that can jump-start their new lifestyle. The dining program also incorporates fresh healthy choices marked on the menus for all meals.

Do cruise ships have gyms? Here's how to stay fit on a cruise

2IMG_9317

Do cruises have gyms? Even if you're not super into working out, it's a logical question when you consider how many other amenities are jam-packed onto modern vessels. The answer, of course, is yes, but that doesn't mean you have to spend your entire vacation working up a sweat in order to stay healthy.

Fitness fiends are often quick to decry cruises because of the all-you-can-eat buffets, inclusive beverage packages and proliferation of opportunities to be sedentary. All this can make for a great vacation, but if you're not careful, you could fall into some unhealthy patterns.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

That doesn't mean you can't enjoy a few daiquiris and complimentary soft-serve ice cream, but whether you're on the ship for a few nights or months, staying active's important. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself healthy while you're cruising, even if you never set foot in the gym.

Here's how you can stay fit on your next voyage while minimizing the time you spend exercising — unless, of course, you're really into fitness .

river cruise ships with gym

Get your exercise

Most cruise ships have fitness centers that are free to use. Although some of the biggest workout fanatics will spend time there daily, most people looking for a sweat session hit the gym on sea days. (Go at peak dining times if you'd like to avoid the crowds.)

You'll often find a wide range of cardio machines, including treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and rowers, as well as weight training machines (cable machines and a leg press) and free weights. You might also find high-intensity interval training equipment like kettlebells and medicine balls, plus some yoga mats, bands and foam rollers for stretching out those muscles.

Many cruise ships also offer fitness classes. Royal Caribbean , for example, offers yoga, Pilates and spinning classes on their ships. Carnival Cruise Line offers the same, plus boot camp classes. On Norwegian Cruise Line , you can also take a spin class or a high-intensity boxing class. These are often available for an additional fee.

The exception to the extra-fee class rule is Virgin Voyages , a relative newcomer to the industry. The line's vessels offer all fitness classes at no charge , and the variety is both refreshing and fun. In addition to bungee classes, yoga and spin, passengers can choose from HIIT sessions, Muscle Beach-style workouts and even an '80s aerobics class where themed attire is highly encouraged and Shake Weights are the apparatus of choice.

Many small-ship and upscale cruise lines also include group fitness classes in their fares.

river cruise ships with gym

Prefer to stay outside and maximize the sunlight? Take to the top deck for a run.

Every Royal Caribbean ship except Empress of the Seas has a running track. On Carnival cruises, you'll find padded running tracks on nearly all of the vessels. If you're looking for something a bit less mundane, check out Celebrity Cruises ' Edge-class ships , which feature tracks that wind around the outer decks in a figure-eight that offers inclines and declines to keep things interesting. On Virgin's vessels, the track is alone on the top deck, making it easier to burn calories without worrying that you'll run into someone or trip over a deck chair.

Best of all, you don't need to work out to stay fit during a cruise. All you have to do is skip the elevator. The largest passenger cruise ship on Earth, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , has 18 decks: If you walk up and down the stairs every day, you'll be shocked how quickly you get in your steps during a cruise — even if you are on your way to the buffet.

Watch what you eat

river cruise ships with gym

You might think it's impossible to eat healthy on a cruise ship , but it's pretty easy.

First, the dreaded buffet isn't so bad. With ample salad bars, fresh soups and extensive fruit selections, the buffets offer plenty of options for selective travelers who wish to avoid the endless supply of French fries and mozzarella sticks. In the morning, breakfast buffets typically include a make-your-own omelet bar (request egg whites with vegetables and hold the cheese), hard-boiled eggs and more fruit.

When you're at home, it might be difficult to find fresh or healthy foods, and they are often more expensive than their processed counterparts. But at a cruise ship buffet, making the healthy choice costs nothing.

In sit-down restaurants, cruise lines increasingly have a handful of healthful dishes on the menu, even if they're not crowd-pleasers. Some vessels dedicate sections of restaurant menus to healthy fare. Cunard's Queen Mary 2 's Britannia restaurant, for example, offers spa cuisine items designed in partnership with Canyon Ranch.

river cruise ships with gym

Other lines are doubling down on the wellness movement by introducing health-focused a la carte restaurants. Grab a seat at Celebrity's complimentary Spa Cafe, now on most of the line's vessels. Cruisers can order grilled chicken breast with steamed vegetables; a low-sodium arugula salad with grapefruit segments; and poached fruits with herbs and spices.

On some Princess Cruises vessels, cruisers can now elbow up to an Ocean Terrace Bar turning out raw, fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices (for an upcharge). Even budget line Carnival has a Mongolian Wok restaurant on several of its ships. Tip: Skip the noodles and stick with fresh vegetables and lean proteins.

Lines have stepped up their game in the last few years with regard to dietary restrictions. Not only can you find more vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu items, but you can also look for desserts marked as sugar-free if you're hoping to limit your intake of sweets.

Cruisers should also be mindful of those pesky liquid calories. We're talking about alcohol, juice and soda — or tropical cocktails containing all three. Stick with red wine or straight liquor mixed with club soda instead, or try a NorCal Margarita: tequila, club soda, lemon or lime, salt and ice.

It might be tempting to grab a slice of cake or a frozen cocktail when they're constantly available, but the key is to not go overboard. (See what I did there?)

Book active excursions

river cruise ships with gym

When the ship arrives at a port, you'll want to disembark, stretch your legs and explore — not spend a day in the gym. And that's good news because there are plenty of ways to get your steps on dry land.

Depending on where you're cruising, you might have the opportunity to go cycling, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, paddleboarding or surfing. Take advantage of cruise ship shore excursions and find ways to be active while sightseeing. Even if you don't book a walking tour in a major city, try to make active choices when possible. For example, did you know the average person can burn between 250 and 300 calories in an hour of snorkeling?

River cruise lines are also diving into the fitness fray. AmaWaterways has dedicated wellness hosts who lead active excursions ashore, as well as fitness classes on board (resistance band stretches, cardio dance). Last year, wellness hosts were available on all but three AmaWaterways vessels. They lead groups of cruisers on excursions such as bike rides along the Regensburg countryside or guided hikes up the Philosopher's Path in Heidelberg.

Bottom line

Cruises can be a great way to kick back and relax or explore multiple destinations without having to unpack multiple times — but that doesn't mean you should completely toss away your fitness routine. Cruise lines have made it easy for passengers to hit the gym, take a fitness class or go for a run both on board and on dry land. So take advantage of the convenient exercise options, even for just a few minutes a day.

River Cruises: Discovering Active Adventures

AmaWaterways is adding Pickleball to AmaMagna, which sails the Danube River.

Active, fitness-focused consumers who love hiking, biking or working out at home, initially might say “no” to a European river cruise . Yes, these luxury travelers typically “get” that pampering river cruises are an incredible way to float through the continent with close-up views of fairytale-like towns, storied cities, vineyards and gorgeous landscapes.

But, at the same time, they often ask: “Is a river cruise the right fit for my lifestyle? I’m fit and active. I don’t want my grandparents’ river cruise experience of the 1980s or 1990s.”

Fortunately, today’s European river cruises are a world apart from past voyages on those same waterways. They’re highly personalized, guest-centric and brimming with choices including many active adventures.

European river cruises often offer bicycles for guests to use in exploring ashore.

Fleets of Bicycles

Did you know that many upscale river lines transport “fleets of bicycles” aboard their European river vessels? It’s true. So, it’s super easy to grab a bike and go. Cruisers can pedal out independently to explore a port destination or sign up for guided bike shore excursions.

In 2006, AmaWaterways was the first major European river cruise line to introduce a “fleet of bicycles” carried on its river ships. Today, all the upscale line’s vessels (except for those in Portugal) each carry 25 bicycles, plus two child-sized bikes. Sailing the Danube River, the larger AmaMagna carries 50 bicycles and four child-sized bikes.

So, in Vienna, the line’s guests might pedal away independently to see the Austrian Parliament building, churches and historic squares. At the exterior of the Spanish Riding School, they might even spot white Lipizzaner stallions popping their heads out from stable stalls.

AmaWaterways’ guests also might choose a guided bike excursion through French wine country, Austria’s Wachau Valley or the Dutch countryside. Ratcheting up the intensity level, AmaWaterways also partners with Backroads for select “active itinerary” and full-ship charter sailings. Guests are accompanied by Backroads’ expert trip leaders.

Guests on European river cruises will discover that many river lines carry fleets of bicycles.

River Cruises for Cyclists

Ultra-luxury Crystal River Cruises also carries road bikes for independent guest use or for guided biking shore excursions. One nice perk is that Crystal offers three complimentary guided bike excursions during each seven-night voyage between April and late October; those don’t operate later in the year due to weather-related safety concerns.

Crystal Mahler’s seven-night Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland voyage during 2022, offers a complimentary “Bike Tour through Waterland” excursion from Amsterdam. During this three-hour, guided bike tour, cruise guests will pedal into the Dutch countryside.  While staying active, they’ll view bucolic scenes of windmills, farms, flowers and charming villages.

Crystal's guests on European river cruises head out on an organized bike excursion.

The active “Let’s Go” program by Uniworld Boutique River Cruises also opens a world of lively activities for guests who wish to keep moving. Cruisers can concoct their own personalized bike tour, based on their personal interests. Or, they can join a Uniworld-arranged, guided bike shore excursion, at times accompanied by a sports guide or expert naturalist.

Uniworld’s “ Brilliant Bordeaux ” voyage from Bordeaux, France offers a “‘Let’s Go’ Bike in the Medoc Vineyards” excursion. Active cruisers will climb aboard their bicycle in Pauillac, France, and wheel through wine country with an expert cycling guide. It’s a fresh-air experience with views of prestigious wine estates.

Adventure Hosts on River Cruises

Another major European river line, Avalon Waterways carries 16 complimentary bicycles on each of its European river ships. Plus, the line offers two electronically assisted bikes (e-bikes) on every Suite Ship. What’s an e-bike? These offer motorized propulsion or pedal power assistance, depending on the specific e-bike type. So, less active cruisers – perhaps accompanying a more fit companion – can pedal as much or little as desired.

Avalon Waterways provides “Adventure Hosts” on all ships too. They’ll take guests out for guided bike rides or recommend “on-your-own” biking routes.

Cruisers booking the line’s “Active & Discovery on the Danube” itinerary can head out on bike shore excursions. Among them are a route pedaling between Spitz and Krems in Austria. In Durnstein, bikers will stop to see the blue Stiftskirche, a gorgeous, Baroque-style church. It was constructed in the 1400s and rebuilt in the 1700s. An added treat for cyclists is the opportunity to taste local culinary specialties.

Alternatively, cruisers might check out Avalon Waterways’ “Active and Discovery on the Rhone” excursion. That’s a guided e-bike ride through the Gard region (the area around Nimes, France).

River Cruises in Europe

Luxury river line, Tauck , also carries between six and 10 regular bicycles (not e-bikes) aboard its European river vessels. Tauck’s directors will provide recommended cycling routes for those bikers desiring to tour independently.

In select locations, that river line also works with a local partner-supplier to provide river cruisers with guided cycling excursions. Those Tauck tours feature either regular bicycles or e-bikes, depending on destination and specific excursion.

During Tauck’s “ Rhine and Moselle ” cruise between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland, four different biking options await. Guests will spend the morning in Boppard, Germany, and after lunch, they have two choices. They can either  cruise the Middle Rhine aboard their river vessel. Or, they can head out for a three-hour, e-bike cycling excursion along the same stretch of river.

Past guests report that this bike excursion is a hoot. Why so? It gives guests a chance to “chase the ship.” That’s done safely, of course and doesn’t jeopardize the bike experience of castle views and guide-provided commentary. But it’s fun to see whether the river vessel or the cyclists arrive first in Bacharach, Germany.

These guests are among those heading out from European river cruises for an active shore excursion or independent bike outing. Photo by AmaWaterways.

Biking along the Rivers

While Viking River Cruises doesn’t carry a fleet of bikes on its river voyages, fitness-focused guests can book bicycle shore excursions. Upon arrival at Cologne, Germany, Viking’s active-minded guests traveling on the “Grand European Tour,” “Rhine Getaway” or “European Sojourn” itineraries will meet their biking guide, take a short safety briefing, don a helmet and set off to explore.

Along the way, they’ll see the famous equestrian statue of Friedrich Wilhelm III (King of Prussia). Other route highlights include Germany’s oldest City Hall and the magnificent, Gothic-styled Cologne Cathedral. The cycling route will take them into Cologne’s Old Town and along the Rheinauhafen waterfront.

Alternatively, guests traveling on Viking’s “Holland & Belgium” itinerary can opt for “Antwerp by Bicycle” shore excursion. That includes popping into the Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady, home to much impressive art including works by Rubens.

Cyclists on this excursion will pedal along the Scheldt quays and check out Antwerp’s former harbor and the MAS Museum. They’ll also eyeball the Havenhuis, Antwerp Port Authority’s iconic new headquarters designed by architect Zaha Hadid.

Seeking a week-long voyage on the Danube River? Another option is European river line, CroisiEurope,  which offers a “ Beautiful Blue Danube” itinerary.   While the line also doesn’t carry bikes aboard its river ships, on that itinerary,  one highlight is a DISCOVERY guided bike tour of Budapest, Hungary.

Active River Cruises

Scenic , a luxury river line sailing in Europe, has developed a robust Scenic Freechoice program. Travelers personalize their days ashore – selecting excursions or activities tailored to their specific interests. Yes, guided bike excursions are one option. Guests can also explore independently via e-bike — following their chosen route with the Scenic Tailormade App.

During Scenic’s eight-day “ Bordeaux Affair ” itinerary operated by Scenic Diamond in 2022, cycling enthusiasts can head ashore at Blaye, France. During a Scenic Freechoice 18-mile bicycle excursion, they’ll pedal along Captain’s Road. It’s named in honor of the World War I captains who bought homes along this stretch of riverfront.

Attracting many active, younger and young-at-heart guests for its focus on active river adventures is Scenic’s sister line, Emerald Cruises. The line’s dedicated activity managers support all EmeraldACTIVE shore excursions including guided bicycle excursions.

During the past five years, that EmeraldACTIVE tour program has increased its offerings by more than 50 percent. Those activity managers will help guests scope out individual bike tour routes, if cruisers prefer to head out independently.

Uniworld’s sister river cruise line, U by Uniworld , also draws an often younger, more active clientele. U by Uniworld’s eight-day “Vienna Vibe” voyage sails eight days from Vienna to Nuremberg, Germany.

Biking fans can opt for this voyage’s Passau bike tour as well as a “Wachau Wheels” excursion in Melk, Austria. During that latter outing, guests will bike along the Danube, view castles and vineyards, and enjoy a “blanket picnic.”

Beyond Biking

River cruises provide options for active adventures such as kayaking. Photo by Avalon Waterways.

Active adventures on a European river cruise certainly go beyond biking too. Most notably, river travelers can “dive into” destinations via guided hiking, biking, climbing, canoeing, rafting and more.

For example, Avalon Waterways offers kayaking and canoeing on certain itineraries, while EmeraldACTIVE shore excursions include urban and rural hikes and canoeing.

For those who love hiking and walking, CroisiEurope has created  “themed hiking cruises.” One 2022 itinerary is roundtrip from Porto, Portugal. Guests will get plenty of fitness steps while hiking in Porto, the Douro Valley and Salamanca, Spain. Hiking/walking tours are led by a qualified mountain guide.

With the “Let’s Go” program, Uniworld guests can go kayaking or borrow a Nordic walking stick to explore on their own. Or, they might tee off at Golf d’Etretat, perched atop Normandy’s cliffs in France. U by Uniworld’s fitness-focused guests visiting Rotterdam in the Netherlands can head out jogging on local running paths.

During a port call at Rudesheim, Germany, AmaWaterways’ guests can choose a guided vineyard hike. Or, during that line’s call at Bratislava, Slovakia, travelers can take a guided hike to the Bratislava Castle ruins.

If vacationing on Viking’s “France’s Finest” and “Lyon & Provence” itineraries, canoeing is possible too. For example, Viking’s cruisers booking the  “C anoe the Rhone River” shore excursion will enjoy a 2.5-hour downstream paddle. While admiring Avignon’s sites, they’ll learn about the Rhone River ecosystem.

Fitness Afloat

When travelers return from an active adventure ashore, they’ll discover that their river vessel often has its own fitness-focused facilities or activities. So they can stay in shape afloat, not simply ashore.

On AmaMagna's Danube. Photo by AmaWaterways. river cruises, guests can take spinning classes on the outside deck.

Many lines offer small exercise facilities outfitted with state-of-the-art fitness machines and weights. Some have unique options.

AmaWaterways’ largest river vessel, AmaMagna , has a row of spinning bikes outside the ship’s fitness center. So, cruisers “spin away” while watching day-to-day life unfold along the river.

On select Uniworld sailings, guests can begin the day with a TRX Suspension Training class by a certified wellness instructor.

At Scenic Cruises’ onboard fitness center, cruisers might tackle the “Five Tibetan Rites.” That’s a set of exercises to help reverse the effects of aging.

Fitness-minded Crystal guests can get their heart rate up with state-of-the-art cardio equipment. Guests can also take yoga and stretching classes.

It’s also easy for travelers to maintain their “walking regimen” or achieve a certain number of fitness steps daily. Just head for the top-deck walking track on many river lines including Viking.

river cruise ships with gym

Emerald’s onboard activity managers will set up “walk a mile” classes on the Sun Deck, plus yoga and Pilates sessions. For fitness coupled with fun, Emerald’s guests can enjoy aqua aerobics in a small pool.

Other lines too have active options. Just be sure to ask about what’s offered fitness-wise for any itinerary and ship before booking a river cruise. Find the best match. Facilities and activities vary sizably ship to ship, line to line. For example, Viking’s river vessels have top-deck walking tracks but not fitness centers.

Parting Thoughts

While afloat on Europe’s rivers, it’s heavenly to kick back, relax and sip on a glass of wine while taking in the scenery. Travelers get “up close” views of storied destinations. They become fully immersed in the European experience.

But today’s European river voyages also offer fresh, appealing and often-active choices for daily activities. Cruisers with a fitness bent can simply pick their pleasure.

Perhaps that’s bicycling, canoeing, paddleboarding, climbing or hiking ashore. On board, it might entail a gym work-out, aerobics class or fitness laps on the top deck.

But, overall, this this definitely isn’t your grandparents’ river cruise experience. It’s more personalized, choice-driven, and brimming with fantastic, new active adventures.

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

Viking's 60-plus ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer options include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, daily walking tours and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

American Cruise Lines ship on river during sunset.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

15 of the Best European River Cruises

Explore France, Germany, and more on these European river cruises.

river cruise ships with gym

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . "Sitting on the top deck of a ship under brilliant blue skies, you can gaze on fabled landscapes dotted with castles, villages, and vineyards. A flight of stairs down, and you have all the amenities of a modern hotel—restaurants, bars, fitness facilities, spas, internet access, and comfortable staterooms."

With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

Perhaps the best known of the river cruise companies, Viking promotes their "longships," which include large suites and inviting verandas for outdoor dining. Guests enjoy Viking's destination-focused dining as well as the variety of staterooms and itineraries with a wide range of prices.

Viking's 10-day "Portugal's River of Gold '' begins in Lisbon with a walking tour through its ancient streets before heading to Porto, home of the country's traditional wine, to board the ship and begin the cruise along the Douro River. Guests can explore Baroque palaces, vineyards, and lush scenery along the way, arriving in the World Heritage city of Salamanca, Spain on day six. The itinerary includes visits to Portuguese villages in Pinhão and Régua to sample local foods and wines before returning to Porto.

AmaWaterways

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2022, this family-owned and operated cruise company focuses on excellent food and wine, tasteful décor, stateroom views, and innovation in their luxurious fleet. Fares include fitness classes, shore excursions, and all dining on board, including The Chef's Table specialty restaurant. New ships debut each year, and the spacious AmaMagna , launched in 2019, is nearly twice the width of traditional European cruise ships.

Wine lovers will want to experience the seven-night "Taste of Bordeaux," with visits to iconic chateaux, timeless vineyards, and delicious wine tastings while cruising the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Excursions include a tour of a medieval castle and tasting of Sauternes, a stop in Pauillac, gateway to the Medoc wine region, and a Saint-Emilion tour and tasting. Returning to Bordeaux, guests will explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of the wine world.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld's one-of-a-kind vessels are inspired by the locales they visit, making their luxurious ships a destination in themselves. Billed as "the world's only authentic boutique cruise line," Uniworld offers in-suite butler service, world-class cuisine, and all-inclusive rates that cover premium spirits and wines as well as gratuities.

Their eight-day "Enchanting Danube" cruise aboard the S.S. Maria Theresa begins in Budapest with a choice of touring by bicycle or walking. A stop in Vienna includes a Mozart and Strauss concert at a Viennese palace, a city tour, and a taste of local delicacies. The cruise ends in Passau with a choice of bicycling, walking, or hiking to explore the city and a special captain's farewell reception and dinner.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon features wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows with beds facing the views for ultimate enjoyment from their suites and staterooms. Large private bathrooms include full showers and L'Occitane bath amenities. Their deluxe beds and luxurious linens provide comfort in spacious, quiet quarters with ample closet space. Avalon offers "Active & Discovery" river cruises with activities for a variety of energy and fitness levels, from traditional sightseeing to action-packed experiences.

The "Active & Discovery on the Rhone" cruise begins in Lyon and heads south through the French countryside of Provence and ends in Port-Saint-Louis. On the way, Avalon Choice excursions include a culinary walk, cooking class, painting workshop, wine tastings, guided bike rides, and more, with Active, Classic, and Discovery level activities.

Started as a New England motor coach tour company, Tauck is a family-owned global travel firm offering tours and cruises to a wide range of destinations around the world. Their award-winning European river cruises are praised for their personalized service, exclusive destination experiences, luxurious cabins and suites, fine dining, and professional, caring staff.

"Impressions from the Seine: Paris to Normandy," an eight-day cruise, features stops in historic small villages and towns and a visit to the D-Day beaches of Normandy and the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. A private visit to the home and gardens of Claude Monet at Giverny and a visit to the Impressionist Museum will please art lovers. Other highlights include a guided visit to Versailles, Louis XIV's magnificent palace and gardens, the Cathedrale de Rouen, and Joan of Arc Square.

Scenic offers both ocean and river cruises, all with emphasis on its fleet of "Space-Ships" and their meticulous design and spacious quarters. Guests enjoy personalized butler service and all-inclusive cruising. Ships offer a wellness area, massage services, gym, e-bikes, and onboard entertainment. Scenic's "FreeChoice" excursions offer something for all activity levels.

The "Charming Castles & Vineyards of the Rhine & Moselle" begins with arrival in Frankfurt and transfer to Mainz for boarding. Stops include Koblenz, where guests can take a walking or e-bike tour. There's a private classical music concert and tour of Reichsburg Castle along the way, as well as optional visits to the Mercedes-Benz factory or a walking tour of Strasbourg and its magnificent cathedral.

Emerald Cruises

Emerald offers both yacht and river cruises, with a range of cruises on the rivers in Europe. Founded in 2013, Emerald now features a fleet of nine "Star-Ships," with stylish suites, first-class amenities, and room for 180 guests. Most carry bicycles, and all staterooms are equipped with hiking poles. Excursions include the EmeraldPLUS program of special experiences to connect with their destinations, and EmeraldACTIVE offers faster-paced guided tours, bike rides, hikes, and activities.

The eight-day "Sensations of Lyon & Provence" cruise begins in Lyon and heads to a quaint village and then south again towards Tournon, with its 16th-century castle. Along the way, guests can choose a hike through vineyards, canoe trip, village walking tours, or wine tasting onboard.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises

Partnering with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney offers cruises on the Seine, Rhine, and Danube Rivers, Disney style. Specially designed itineraries and Adventure Guides create experiences for parents, children, and teens, from active excursions to unique onboard activities. Adults-only dinners and wine tasting experiences along with teen programming, Disney movie nights, karaoke, trivia nights, and Junior Adventurer dinners provide entertainment for guests of all ages.

The eight-day Danube River Cruise starts in Budapest where excursions include a horse show at an equestrian park and a goulash-making competition for Adventurers. In Bratislava, Junior Adventurers can visit a petting zoo, and in the evening, there's family karaoke. A tour of Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace, marionette show, concert, and strudel making are options the next day. A day in Salzburg ends onboard with "The Sound of Music" film and singalong. After an Oktoberfest celebration and captain's farewell dinner, the cruise ends the next day.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Established in 1976, Croisi offers cruises on rivers, canals, and seas with a fleet of oceangoing ships, canal barges, and river cruise ships. The company's innovative approach allowed them to be pioneers on several rivers in Europe including the Gironde, Loire, Po, and Elbe, basing their ships' design on the characteristics of the waterways.

CroisiEurope's seven-day "Hamburg to Berlin: Discover the Medieval Charms of Hanseatic Cities" cruise starts with guided tours of Hamburg and Lübeck, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a morning cruise, the ship will ride on the Scharnebeck twin ship lift, one of the highest in Europe, with a vertical lift of 125 feet. An optional visit to the Autostadt theme park, dedicated to German auto design, and an afternoon cruise fill day four. The next day, there's a tour of Magdeburg, known for its fascinating architecture and culture. The ship arrives in Berlin for a tour and festive evening.

This German cruise company' s distinctive ships are easy to recognize by the large red lips and rose on the bow. Their fleet of 12 ships was joined by the new A-Rosa Sena , a hybrid powered ship expected to cruise the northern Rhine almost silently and emission-free. Family-friendly amenities include a kids club, heated outdoor pools, and free passage for children ages 15 and under.

The six-day "Highlights of the Rhine" cruise begins in Cologne and cruises on to Rotterdam and then Amsterdam the following day. Options include a bus tour, canal tour, pedal boats, or private auto tour, each at an additional cost. A variety of ways to explore Utrecht the next day are available. On day six, the ship returns to Cologne.

Lueftner Cruises

This Austrian family business dates back more than 40 years and offers European river cruises on its fleet of 16 AMADEUS ships. Five-star service, facilities, and cuisine are their hallmarks, and their ships feature wide panoramic windows and a spacious sun deck.

The eight-day "Saar and Moselle Fairytales" cruise boards in Cologne and cruises down the Rhine to the Moselle and its tributary, the Saar River. The ship passes the Mosel vineyards and docks in the medieval town of Cochem for a guided walking tour. The next day, guests can tour the town of Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a wine tasting or hike to the ruins of a castle for a stunning view. After a morning tour of Saarburg, the ship cruises along the Saar River with panoramic views of its massive loop. The ship stops in Luxembourg and then continues to Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet, before returning to Cologne.

Apt River Cruises

This Australian-owned organization is the country's largest family-owned tour and cruise company , offering a variety of travel styles. Their Concerto River Ships, AmaVenita , AmaStella , and AmaReina , cruise on the Danube, Main, Rhine, and Douro Rivers with luxury accommodations and excursions. Apt charters the ships from AmaWaterways, but their itineraries and onboard programs are unique to Apt River Cruises. Apt's offerings include rail journeys, as well as small boat, yacht, and ocean cruises.

Their 15-day "Magnificent Europe" cruise begins in Amsterdam with a canal tour and cruises the Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers before arriving in Budapest. The ship docks in Koblenz and takes a daytime cruise through the Rhine Gorge before landing in Miltenberg for a guided tour of the city. On day six, guests can choose a trip to Rothenburg or visit a family-owned farm for a home-cooked morning tea. The ship passes through the Main-Danube Canal that connects the Black Sea and the North Sea. In Vienna, there's a cocktail party and private orchestra recital or city tour before heading to Budapest for two days.

Nicko Cruises

This German company offers 30 years of experience on Europe's rivers, and has a fleet of 26 river ships in addition to the expedition ship World Voyager and oceangoing Vasco Da Gama . The company's "time to discover" philosophy focuses on intensive travel experiences, shore excursions, and varied culinary offerings.

The eight-day "Traveling on the Elbe and Havel" cruise covers Germany's north on rivers and canals aboard the Frederick Chopin . Starting in Berlin, the cruise continues to Potsdam for a guided walking tour. A guided tour takes guests through Autostadt Wolfsburg, a park dedicated to the history of the automobile. In Hamburg, there's a city tour and harbor cruise before the cruise continues to the Baltic resort, Laboe, and ends in Kiel.

Teeming River Cruises

Founded in 2017 with the goal of making European river cruises more economical and personalized, family-owned American company Teeming River Cruises developed a different river cruise model. Instead of pre-programmed group activities, guests create their own unique experiences with a complimentary city tour app for each destination. All-inclusive plans and group tours are not part of Teeming's itineraries.

Their cruise in northern Italy along the Po River, "From the Canals of Venice to Renaissance-infused Mantua," is a seven-day excursion starting in Venice where guests can discover St. Mark's Square and Doge's Palace. In partnership with CroisiEurope aboard the MS Michelangelo , the ship heads west to Vicenza and then on to Chioggia. Day four is spent in Verona, with its ancient amphitheater and Giusti Gardens. The next days are spent in Cremona and Mantua with disembarkation and a coach trip back to Venice.

Belmond - Afloat in France

Belmond has another way to cruise some of Europe's rivers — on luxury barges with private chefs and excursions like truffle hunting, hot air ballooning, canoeing, and wine tasting. Seven barges make up Afloat in France , each with its own style and size. The elegant barges cruise the waterways of Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, Champagne, Languedoc, and Franche-Comté from April to October.

On the Belmond Napoleon , guests cruise the River Saône past châteaux, rural river towns, and expansive vineyards. Stops at Montmerle, Mâcon, and Tournus offer opportunities for wine tasting and exploring a Benedictine abbey. There's a walking tour of Chalon-Sur-Sâone and time to browse through St. Jean de Losne.
