Robbie Williams XXV Tour Review

As a theatre blog, it is very rare that other artworks get cupboard space in this pantry of the dramatic arts, but occasionally a performance we attend strikes a chord and we feel it deserves an honorary mention; this is that blog post. On Saturday the 15th of October 2022, I went to see former Take That bench warmer Robbie Williams perform his XXV tour at the Birmingham Resort World Arena, formerly the NEC. Before you assume my outward love of the ageing pop star and dub him my ‘guilty pleasure’, I would note the tickets were bought for my mother who fits perfectly in his target audience of ‘middle aged women’. I will now defend my experience by saying there was no guilt in the pleasure of this show!

The performance is part of a small UK tour in collaboration with his latest album XXV, which boasts alternative mixes of his best known hits, without selling out and releasing a ‘greatest hits’ compilation. Let us first deal with the support at ‘ Lufthaus’, an EDM band consisting of Tim Metcalfe, Flynn Francis and mr Robbie Williams himself; yes, Robbie William’s support act was Robbie Williams. With the size of that mans ego, would you expect any less? Though Mr Williams did not make a stage appearance during their set, Tin and Flynn tried their best to hype up the crowd by playing repetitive songs bereft of melody to a bemused audience, at the lowest point of their set a QR code appeared on the screen for the audience to download their very own Lufthaus NFT, so very very odd.

The show opened with a bit of a curveball, the song ‘Hey Wow Yeah Yeah’ from the ‘Take The Crown’ album, best known for its appearance on the Vauxhall Corsa advert recently. The moving 3D screens lifted to reveal a very simple pyramid style set, with the band adorned - the blocks used were video screens which were used to their very limits in creative stage design, a lot is to be said to the tech team on this tour who knocked it out of the park with crisp audio and an incredible light show. The song lead into the classic ‘Let Me Entertain you’, which it did from the off set, the room erupted in a sea of women in their early 50’s screaming, jumping clapping and stomping along to the classic.

“I’m Robbie Williams, this is my show, this is my arse, let me entertain you”

After the ball grabbing starter of cheesy pop, the real show began. The showman had the audience in the palm of his hand, starting with jokes about being ‘F***ked’ after performing 2 songs, call backs to his televised Nebworth show where he asked the audience to “grow old with him”, and explained the concept of the album and show. Aside from fulfilling the terms of his contract with his record label, the tour was a trip down memory lane for the last 32 years of his career, from humble beginnings of Take That and getting his bum out in their first music video, to his self destruction, going solo and leading to his sobriety.

Rather touchingly Robbie confided in his audience that he has become aware his songs fit into two categories ‘Look at me aren’t I great’ and ‘bloody hell, I’m vulnerable’, and this is down to his mental health. Most touching was his confession that 22 years ago when he had hit rock bottom, became a recluse and struggled to make friends, he found a friend in one Gerry Halliwell of the Spice Girls and wrote the song Eternity to and about her, as he sang the audience really listened to the lyrics and melody and I think this opened eyes around the arena to what a fantastic songwriter he is - Let’s not forget that last year saw the debut of Robbie’s first Musical ‘The Boy in a Dress’ adapted from the David Walliams book.

robbie williams xxv tour warm up

The history lesson of the life of the legend himself gave insight into how he found his voice, from leaving Take That and releasing a cover of George Michaels ‘Freedom’, in the same cheesy style expected of a Boyband. A trip to Glastonbury and time spent with Oasis inspired him to have much more guitar and drum lead tracks, and the inspiration payed off. Robbie then treated the audience to a cover of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis, which surprisingly worked!

Coming closer to the present day he payed homage to his wife and 4 children, explained for the first time ever he is happy to be alive, happy to be loved and sang it all in ‘Love My Life’, one of his most recent hits. The show finished with ‘Rock DJ’, to leave the audience on a high, asking, ney, begging for more! The encore, three of his biggest selling songs ‘No Regrets’, ‘She’s the One’ and of course ‘Angels’. From start to finish the man controlled his audience, lightning whit, incomparable stage presence and a spellbinding performance.

In conclusion, like him or not, the man knows how to write a song (with 14 UK number one singles, 14 number one albums and 6 albums in the top 100 biggest selling albums), the man knows how to perform live (Guiness world record for selling 1.6 million tickets in one day in 2006) and the man knows how to have longevity in the business (with 32 years of success and has more Brit awards than any other artist with 18 awards and 39 nominations).

The concert concluded with Robbie proclaiming to the audience that there is still ‘loads more’ to come. The album XXV is on sale now, the XXV tour continues in the UK before moving to Europe next year. Celebrating 25 years since the beginning of his solo career a deluxe edition re-release of his debut album ‘Life Through A Lens’ is available for pre-order.

Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, robbie williams – xxv tour, world resorts arena, birmingham: live review.

Robbie might be older, but he still attracts a full arena! Kelvin Brown reviews as one of the greatest entertainers of the last three decades tours his XXV album.

robbie williams xxv tour warm up

Yes, it’s been 25 years since Robbie Williams left the boy band Take That and embarked on his solo career. A career that he did not know back then or peruse to overtake Elvis Presley’s record and become the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums in UK chart history this year. 14 No.1 Albums in the UK to be exact.

The launch of Take That was 32 years ago…yes…I had to count back to when Robbie was recruited at the age of 17 then made their first promotional video. Robbie said, “ this is a video we were all proud of but one that no one should ever see ”.

With some open, candid, funny and revealing moments scattered with anecdotes about his 25 years at the top, he stops in the middle of a Take That track, Eve r ything Changes, as if a memory recall flashed into his mind. He recalled how he tore off the manacles of Take That while at his first and only appearance at Glastonbury in 1995.

“I set off with a boot full of champagne and a pocket full of cocaine, ready to get insane and I went to Glastonbury to begin what I didn’t know was to be the start of my new life,” he quips of his now-notorious weekend partying with the Gallagher brothers of Oasis.

From Take That songs, The Flood, to Rock DJ, to Kylie Minogue’s duet Kids; this night is essentially a personalised tour of his career, from boyband heartthrob through the cocaine years to his current station as a family man whose kids think he’s lost his looks.

The set is peppered with anecdotes about going on holiday with Geri Horner (Spice Girl) when he was first getting sober and doing cocaine with Oasis at Glastonbury before hammering out a cover of Don’t Look Back in Anger so resonant it should legitimately annoy the Gallagher brothers into burying the hatchet.

His European and Australasia tour coincides with his new No. 1 album XXV which explores the 25 years of his solo career. All hits and fan favourites were re-recorded and orchestrated.

To counter, there’s plenty of the man that gave us the album Rudebox (which he graciously does not play). He points into the crowd, grabs his crotch, bends over and roars “this is my bum, this is my ar se” followed by comments about ageing.

Within the first five minutes, he’s down among the crowd screaming “come on you fuckers”. For a sweeping encore of No Regrets and She’s the One. He dons a customised wrestling robe and holds his arms outstretched while the band blows the songs up to operatic proportions.

Now approaching 50, Williams doesn’t just write songs about living fast and being young. He performs with the joy of what can come after. His message for anyone who’s followed his journey from the start, and I suspect, himself: “Turns out there is a happy ending.”

A night of nostalgic entertainment for everyone, a night that brought back memories for me. Back in 1993, I was in a band performing at the iconic London Electric Ballroom, Camden only to be overshadowed by screaming fans outside the venue. They were all looking up to a hotel room window across the road with Take That hanging out of the window waving and blowing kisses at fans.

Well, what can I say, am I now writing about that then-17-year-old hanging out of that hotel window as a nostalgic fan? Well yeah!

Before things close with Angels, he looks back to his own legendary gig at Knebworth 2003: “When I asked you to grow old with me at Knebworth you did, didn’t you?”

Oh – And a shout-out to my girlfriend’s sister too, she was on stage performing as one of his dancers and will be touring with him…go girl!

Time Out says

The pop heartthrob is celebrating 25 years as a solo artist by heading back Down Under for another huge tour

Remember the early noughties, when MySpace was still a thing and singers like Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia and Robbie Williams ruled the airwaves? Well, it seems like 2022 is the latter pop heartthrob's comeback year. You might say that, angels brought us here? And it's time to move your body.

Back in April 2022, Williams played two exclusive, sell-out shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena for his upcoming biopic – and now he's headed back Down Under in 2023 for his XXV tour.

A second batch of tickets have dropped for Williams' Sydney show in November, and we also now know who his support act will be. F ellow British singer-songwriter Gaz Coombes will join Robbie as a special guest on all Australian dates. Also known for his work as front man of legendary Britpop band Supergrass, the solo artist returns down under for the first time since 2018.

As for ol' green eyes Robbie Williams, he really needs no introduction, having cemented himself as one of the finest male pop stars of his generation and racked up more than 80 million album sales. And with the release of his new album  XXV  earlier this month, Williams is officially celebrating 25 years as a solo artist.

Hear his classics and new tracks live when he takes over Allianz Stadium for an all ages show on Thursday, November 16, 2023. Tickets are on sale at the   Frontier Touring website .

Robbie Williams announces ‘XXV’ Australian tour

Celebrating "25 years of hits" next November

Robbie Williams performing live onstage in 2019

Robbie Williams’ ‘XXV’ world tour will arrive in Australia and New Zealand in November and December of 2023.

The tour, announced today (September 21), follows on from the exclusive Melbourne shows that Williams performed at Rod Laver Arena back in late April and early May – as well as the AFL grand final that Williams is set to perform at this weekend. In addition to playing open-air stadium shows in Sydney and Melbourne, Williams will also headline three winery shows hosted by A Day On The Green. A full list of dates can be seen below.

The singer will pre-empt the Australian tour with a single date in New Zealand, playing at the Mission Estate in Hawke’s Bay. Tickets for all shows will go on sale from next Friday (September 30) at 1pm local time, with various pre-sales being held by Telstra Plus, Frontier Touring and Williams’ own fanclub. Details for each can be found here , here and here respectively.

In a press statement, Williams described Australia and New Zealand as “my favourite places in the world to tour”.

“I feel so at home there, and hugely appreciate the warm, loving welcome I always receive,” he said. “I can’t wait to do these shows in 2023 and spend some time with my fans.”

The ‘XXV’ world tour is in support of Williams’ titular new album , which he released earlier this month. A greatest hits of sorts, the album sees Williams re-recording many of his best-known songs with new orchestral arrangements. A new song, ‘Lost’ , was also included on the album.

The singer is also reportedly at work on the studio follow-up to his last album, 2016’s ‘The Heavy Entertainment Show’ (as well as his 2019 Christmas album ‘The Christmas Present’). Williams claims that the “guitar based” album is based around the hypothetical of going “back to 1995” , fresh from his departure from Take That .

“Now, with the… musical knowledge that I have, what would be the album that I would make?” he said.

Williams’ ties to Australia have been a key aspect of his year, with his biopic  Better Man being filmed in Melbourne . The film is being directed by Michael Gracey, best known for his work on  The Greatest Showman , whom Williams’ songwriter Guy Chambers has described as “a bit of a genius”.

“The only thing I know about [the movie] so far is that the songs will be reimagined in the film,” Chambers said in an interview with NME last year. “It’s going to be a bit like they did with the Elton biopic [ Rocketman ].”

In July, a television documentary about Williams was also announced. It is reportedly being made by the same production company behind the Liam Gallagher documentary  As It Was , and will be coming to Netflix at some point in 2023.

Robbie Williams’ ‘XXV’ Australasian tour dates are:

NOVEMBER 2023 Saturday 11 – Hawke’s Bay, Mission Estate Thursday 16 – Sydney, Allianz Stadium Saturday 18 – Mount Cotton, Sirromet Wines Thursday 23 – Melbourne, AAMI Park Saturday 25 – Geelong, Mt. Duneed Estate

DECEMBER 2023 Friday 1 – Swan Valley, Nikola Estate

Robbie celebrated his latest milestone with the release of ‘XXV’, featuring re-recorded orchestral versions of his biggest hits and personal favourite tracks.

The track debuted at No. 1, giving the hitmaker a record 14th solo chart-topper , which saw Robbie surpasses Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most UK No. 1 albums.

“Thank you to everyone who’s supported the album: everyone who’s bought it, streamed it, downloaded it and reviewed it,” he said in celebration of the milestone.

“I’m so pleased that it’s gone to No. 1, and whilst it feels strange to be receiving an award during these sombre times, I wanted to thank you all for your support and dedicate this to the fans, who I never take for granted. I really appreciate it, thank you so much.”

In a  review of the album , Retro Pop said ‘XXV’ “marries Robbie’s classic sound with nuances found in his swing repertoire, celebrating the past 25 years and opening the door to the next era in his career.”

‘XXV’ is  available now .

Robbie Williams Is Taking His Biggest Hits On Tour

Are you ready to sing along at the top of your lungs to 'Angels' and 'Let Me Entertain You' outside of a karaoke night for once?

Sam Barker

The siren-call of a thousand pubs across the land – the sound of a lone piano introducing a drunken chorus wailing “I sit and wait, does an angel contemplate my fate?” – has been answered. Robbie Williams is going back on tour to celebrate 25 years of pop-chanteur success. And he’s bringing only his biggest and best-est hits along with him.

Across the month of October, the tour will hit London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Dublin. And you know he’s only playing in the arenas. Nothing but the best for a celebration of the best – since the tour is accompanying an all-new greatest hits collection. ‘ XXV ‘ marks Robbie Williams’ third greatest hits collection in a career spanning thirteen studio albums, and countless more live, compilation, and B-side releases.

For the release, Williams has re-recorded his favourite songs with all new orchestration, in conjunction with the Metropole Orkest . And he couldn’t resist adding in a little something new. Standard editions of the LP will include new track, ‘Lost’, while the deluxe edition features three more original compositions. Pre-orders of the LP made before June 14 will give fans access to the tour pre-sale on June 15. Tickets will then go on sale to the general public on June 17.

Personally, the most important thing I got from all of this was Robbie Williams has released a new version of ‘Angels’. And will release a new version of ‘Kids’! Will Kylie Minogue be back to lend her voice to the new version? We can only cross our fingers and hope.

XXV will be released on September 9.

Robbie Williams at Manchester AO Arena - stage times, setlist, support and what to expect on XXV tour

Pop showman Robbie Williams is heading back to Manchester this weeks for three huge shows - here's everything you need to know

  • 15:43, 17 OCT 2022

robbie williams xxv tour warm up

The ultimate pop showman Robbie Williams will be returning to Manchester next week for a string of huge gigs to celebrate 25 years as a solo artist. Manchester, of course, is where he first found fame as one fifth of boyband Take That , so the city will always have a special place in his heart.

And, naturally, when he announced his big arena return earlier this year, tickets were selling so quickly for his first two Manchester gigs that a third date was added. He'll be at the AO Arena on Wednesday October 19, before returning on Friday and Saturday (October 21 and 22).

The tour for Tunstall's finest Robbie , 48, comes on the back of his new album XXV featuring many of his greatest hits and fan favourites, which were all re-recorded and newly orchestrated with the Metropole Orkest. The autumn arena tour is billed as "a joyous celebration of Robbie’s 25 years as a solo artist".

Fans can expect some of his biggest hits on the setlist and some huge fan singalongs to the likes of Come Undone, Rock DJ, Kids, Feel and, of course, Angels.

There's likely to be a nod to a few Take That classics too. And heck, he might even roll out a bit of Oasis, if his homecoming show in Stoke-on-Trent earlier this year was anything to go by when he did a cheeky bit of Don't Look Back in Anger. Here's what we know so far about the gig if you're heading along to any of the Manchester shows this week to help you plan your night.

Who is the support act?

Support on this new tour comes from Lufthaus, which is yes, the new Robbie Williams electronic project. But we're told Robbie does not actually appear during the support set from the band's Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis, but you will hear his vocals.

Lufthaus merge music, art and digitial technology in their live performance so it will definitely be worth getting their early to give them a watch.

Stage times

robbie williams xxv tour warm up

Stage times are always given as a rough guide and are subject to change. The advice is always to arrive as early as possible to get through the security checks and to find your seats as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

Doors — 6:00 pm

Lufthaus — 7:30 pm

Robbie Williams — 8:40 pm

Curfew — 11:00 pm

Robbie kicked off the new tour at London's 02 Arena on October 9, before continuing on to Birmingham's ResortWorld Arena. He's played roughly the same set at both venues, so this is likely what we can expect here at the Manchester gigs this week.

There is only limited availability on seats for the first two nights, October 19 and 21, which were the first to go on sale earlier this year. A third date was announced for Saturday October 22, where some tickets are still available.

Robbie Williams has announced details of the European leg of his “XXV” tour, which has been organized to celebrates 25 years of his solo career.

Williams already confirmed dates for the UK and Ireland run of dates, which will kick off in October. Williams will head inland in January, starting the tour in Bologna, Italy, on January 20. He will then travel to Switzerland, Belgium, and more, before wrapping things up in March. He hits the road one more time in June for a date in Oslo.

Last year, it was announced that the forthcoming Robbie Williams biopic Better Man , will begin filming in Melbourne, Australia in early 2022 and will be directed by Michael Gracey ( The Greatest Showman ).

Williams is one of the U.K.’s most prominent entertainers and one of the best-selling artists of all time. He first found fame with the group Take That , from 1989 to 1995, and then began a wildly successful solo career. The film “will offer an introspective look into the experiences that shaped Williams, both on and off stage.”

Williams is expected to appear as himself, with some of his songs “re-interpreted and recontextualized in the film.” Variety reported that Better Man will be distributed in Australia and New Zealand by leading film distributor, Roadshow Films. International sales are handled by U.K.-based Rocket Science, which previously handled Schumacher and The Trial of The Chicago 7 .
