A Do-It-Yourself walking tour of Ronda

Andalucia (M - Z) , Ronda / / 4 Comments

Ronda is a very popular place, one of the most popular places for visitors in all of Andalusia . It’s a small city which you can visit on a guided tour if you wish (as many people do…) OR you can follow the Do-it-yourself walking tour itinerary that I’ve spelled out below.

I have to give credit for this itinerary to Hotel Polo . We had booked a night there and when we checked in they sent us a copy of this itinerary on Whatsapp (the map you see below). Very helpful, very good hotel. More on that at the bottom of this post along with some restaurant recommendations that they also provided.

A Do-it-yourself walking tour of Ronda

Puente Nuevo

Your walking tour should start here because it is by far the most popular attraction in Ronda. It is what Ronda is famous for.

Ronda is divided by a deep gorge which historically separated two parts of the city: Old Ronda on the southern part of town (shown on the right in the map above) and Newer Ronda (to the left).

The New bridge was built in the 1700’s to connect the two parts of Ronda. There were already two bridges in place, the Old Bridge and the Roman Bridge, but they were small and further upriver. The New bridge took 34 years to build (completed in 1793) and is deeper than it is wide – it is 66 meters wide but reaches 98 meters to the bottom of the gorge. Building the bridge was a technological marvel at the time, requiring huge stone blocks being brought up from the bottom of the gorge.

The bridge is made up of 3 large arches, the center one which has a large room which was used to house political prisoners during the Spanish civil war of the 1930’s. The bridge was also where, in 1936, approximately 500 fascist sympathizers were thrown into the gorge.

The bridge transformed Ronda, bringing the two sides of the city together.

Viewpoints around the Puente Nuevo

There are a bunch of viewpoints around the Puente Nuevo. Walking around the Parador de Ronda (a modern Parador which is also one of Spain’s most popular paradors ) you’ll get views looking back at the Puente Nuevo and the gorge below. A little further, you’ll see views of the Mirador de Ronda and the valley and mountains beyond. You could continue on to the Mirador but for now I suggest walking back to the Puente Nuevo…

Crossing the Puente Nuevo you’ll get lots of different views of the bridge and landscapes. Stop at Mirador de Aldehuela for a different view of the bridge

ronda spain walking tour

Plaza de María Auxiliadora

Make your way to Plaza de María Auxiliadora. From there you’ll see a little path going down into the gorge (see the path marked in red on the map above). 10 minutes will get you to a little area where you get great views looking towards the bridge. It’s the setting of most of those postcard photos of Ronda that you’ll find in the stores.

ronda spain walking tour

Plaza Duquesa de Parcent

Walk to Plaza Duquesa de Parcent (you’ll see indications on the map: “Santa Maria la Mayor” and “Ayuntamiento” that indicate that spot). But first you’ll pass Palacio de Mondragón which is worth a visit if you have a bit of time in Ronda.

Plaza Duquesa de Parcent is the center of Old Ronda. The highlight of this pretty plaza is the church: Santa Maria la Mayor . You can climb up the tower from great views of the city.

Right next to the church is the Town Hall, the “Ayuntamiento”.

ronda spain walking tour

Medieval Walls

Behind the Ayuntamiento are a series of stairs. Go down and follow the road downhill.

You’ll get to Iglesia del Espíritu Santo , a 15th century church constructed over a mosque. The outside walls of the church are thick and actually make up part of the fortifications of the city. Walk a few minutes from the church and you’ll get to Puerta de Almocábar . This is the most impressive gate along the walls of the city, however is was not the main entrance to the old town as many people assume (it in fact faced the old cemetery). You can climb up the walls for some views.

ronda spain walking tour

From here you have to walk back from where you came from, walking up the hill. But stick to your right. You’ll soon see more medieval walls. Called the Arab walls, these walls were built by the Moors and defended the eastern edge of the city. The walls continue downhill, passing the Arab baths (Banos Arabes on the map). Near the Arab baths, you’ll spot the small Roman bridge – next to the bridge stood the gate that was the main entrance to the old city at the time. It was the reason for all these impressive fortifications*.

* During Moorish times, visitors would enter the city at the gate next to the Roman bridge (also called Puente de las Curtidurías or Puente Arabe. It seems to go under many names). They would go to the Arab baths, then a small mosque that stood there for prayers, before entering the city at the Puerte de la Cijara).

ronda spain walking tour

Puente Viejo

Climb up the steep path/stairs. It’ll take you to the Puente Viejo. Next to it is a picturesque gate which built in 1742 – it is the gate of Felipe V and provided yet another defended entrance to the city.

The Puente Viejo was the 2 nd oldest bridge built in Ronda (after the Roman bridge). It was completed in 1616. It’s a small bridge that has only pedestrian traffic these days.

ronda spain walking tour

Jardines de Cuenca

On the edge of the gorge in the new city (which you entered crossing the Peunte Viejo), these gardens are dedicated to the city of Cuenca – Ronda’s “sister” city (both cities share a common geography with their deep gorges).

Here you get incredible views of the gorge and the Guadalevín River. As you wander up further, you have a totally different view of the Puente Nuevo than you had previously.

ronda spain walking tour

Plaza del Socorro & calle Carrera Espinel

Plaza del Socorro is the main square in the new town (and modern Ronda). It’s a pretty plaza with a church (the 20 th century Iglesia del Socorro ) and lots of bars and restaurants. Right next to the square is calle Carrera Espinel, the main commercial street in Ronda.

ronda spain walking tour

Parque Alameda del Tajo

Walking down calle Carrera Espinel you’ll pass the bullring. Ignore it for now. Just next to it is the Parque Alameda del Tajo. A nice park with gardens…but the highlight is the long ‘terrace’ with views of the valley below and mountains in the distance. Walking along you’ll get to the Mirador de Ronda which is another pretty spot with similar views.

ronda spain walking tour

Plaza de Toros (bullring)

Ronda’s bullring is advertised as both the largest and oldest in Spain. In fact both statements are disputable. Ronda’s bullring seats 5,000 spectators – las Ventas bullring in Madrid seats almost 24,000. Construction of Seville’s bullring started in 1761, Ronda’s construction started in 1779 (but Ronda’s was finished a year earlier in 1784). What is definite is that Ronda’s rueda , the sandy circle in the middle of the ring, is the largest in Spain (a diameter of 66m, 6 m more than Madrid’s).

More on the Ronda bullring . (Note: at 8 Euros/pp, entrance is expensive. Too expensive in our opinion).

ronda spain walking tour

The above are the highlights of Ronda and can be visited in a full and busy day . If you want to do a more detailed visit (including entering all the sites you have to pay for: the bullring, Palacio de Mondragón, Santa Maria la Mayor and the Arab baths) then it’s worth staying a night.

Practical Information on Ronda

Getting there

  • Ronda’s train station is a 15 minute walk from the center of the new city. We came by train from Antequera (1 hr). We left the same way, taking the train back to Antequera then connecting to Malaga (30 minutes by high-speed train)
  • The bus station is even closer to the center of the new city (about 10 min). Damas does Ronda-Malaga in 1 hr, 45 min.

Where to Stay

  • We stayed at Hotel Polo as mentioned above. Very comfortable, good value (it’s a 3 star hotel so don’t expect the Ritz). They have a kitchen downstairs with a kettle, dishes and anything else you need. Great! Recommended. If you want something more fancy it has to be the Parador de Ronda . You can’t beat the setting.

Where to eat

  • The restaurant connected to the hotel was very good for breakfast. Otherwise, we didn’t have much luck with restaurants: we were there in January and all restaurants recommended to us were closed (we were told that’s often the case after the holidays). The hotel did recommend some bars and restaurants however. See the map below.

Walking Tour of Ronda

This website uses affiliate links which earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Ronda sits in the heart of the Serrania de Ronda, about 100kms from the city of Malaga and with a population of approximately 35,000 inhabitants.

The town is surrounded by lush river valleys and sits above a deep ravine, which takes your breath away when seeing it.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to visit  Ronda  will understand its appeal. It is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in Spain (the third most visited city in Andalucia) and a very popular day trip for people on a  Costa del Sol holiday .

Historic Bullring

Ronda Bullring

Start the walk in the new part of town.

Ronda is well known as the birthplace of bullfighting and the bullring itself was built in the 18th century and is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. Even though times have changes and few tourists are fans of the sport the Plaze de Toros is an amazing building with a great history and well worth a visit.

You can choose to have a look inside for around 6 EUR or simply admire the beautiful entrance gate and the bullfighter statue of Pedro Romero outside. The tourist office next door may provide you with a paper map to help with orientation.

Stroll the Alameda del Tajo

Walking Paseo De Blas Infante

Coming out the front of the bullring, turn left onto Calle Virgen de la Paz, towards the Almeda del Tajo.

Alameda del Tajo is a popular public park, opened in the beginning of the 19th century. Its tree-lined promenades & panoramic balconies which are suspended over a cliff offer the most beautiful views of the awesome “Serranía de Ronda” Ronda’s mountain range.

The walk is beautiful all year round, in the spring, when pink and white blossoms cover the trees along the walkways, you will be glad of its shade in the summer and its golden colours in the fall, when leaves change color.

Walking the Paseos

Paseo De Blas Infante 2

Mirador de Ronda

Mirador De Ronda

When you get to the Monument to the Bull, you turn right. You will pass between monuments to Orson Wells and Earnest Hemingway and head towards the Mirador de Ronda.

The Mirador de Ronda is a beautiful lookout point from which you can see the lower lying parts of the countryside, the forests, farms and mountains. It’s a breathtaking sight and surely one you will not easily forget.

Walk over the Puente Nuevo

View Of Ronda Spain

The Puente Nuevo is Ronda’s New Bridge (even though it is already 200 years ago). It is an impressive feat of engineering, crossing the steep gorge at a height of almost 100 metres. No wonder it is is Ronda’s most famous landmark.

On this walking tour we will cross the bridge to get to the older part of the town, however if you are keen you can also have a quick look inside. The entrance to the Puente Nuevo is cheap and will give you access to the room underneath the bridge where you can see a small balcony.

is a not very interesting exhibition in Spanish about the construction of the bridge and the use of the room for locking up political prisoners during the Spanish Civil War. The booklet you receive with your ticket will be in English.

Admire the view from the Puerta de los Molinos

Mirador Del Viento

Cross the bridge to the other side and turn the first right down the Calle Tenorio. Walk down this winding cobbled road until you get to the Plaza de María Auxiliadora. This is a great little square and viewing point to get more views of the valley. From here the more energetic will wan to descend the steps in the corner to the Los Molinos. The path is steep and strenuous in summer but you will get the best views of the bridge from the bottom.

You will pass various viewing points:

  • Mirador puente nuevo de Ronda or viewing point of the new bridge
  • Mirador del viento or viewing point of the wind – named after the nearby Gate in the city Wall – Puerta Del Viento – or Gate of the Wind
  • Puerta de los Molinos or Gate of the Mills

When you have (run out of film in your cameras?) head back the way you have come.

Explore the Palacio de Mondragón

Palacio De Mondragon, Ronda, Spain 7

When you are back at the Plaza de María Auxiliadora head south and you will come to the Palacio de Mondragón de Mondragón

The Palacio de Mondragón  or is an an old Moorish palace from the 14th century you will also find Ronda’s Municipal Museum.  The beautiful building started out as the home of home of King Abbel Malik.  For a modest fee you get to see a great palace which is a fine example of Andalusian building design. It’s not large but has nice courtyards, balconies, tiled walls, and terraces. The gardens in particular are gorgeous and offer great views of the countryside and a nice cool breeze.

Take a break at the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent

Iglesia De Santa María La Mayor Ronda

From the Palacio de Mondragón head further south and you will come to the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent.

Also around the square are the convents of Caridad or Charity and the Claristas or the ‘Poor Clares’.

See the Old Walls and City Gate

City Walls Ronda 04

The old City Entrance is worth seeing but you are doubling back on yourself. head down by the right of the City Hall and head south on the Calle Cuesta de las Imágenes. You will have the fortifications of the old city wall on your right – which look magnificent. you should come to Plaza Ruedo Alameda – which is another great square to have a quick caña!

In Moorish times, Ronda was protected its position and high walls that ran around it making it impregnable! Well nearly as it was conquered in 1485 by the Marquis of Cádiz after a brief siege!

The Puerta de Almocábar was the main gate into the old Moorish town. Around the gate you can see part of the old walls that protected Ronda from invaders which are possible to climb up and walk along the top of!

Marvel at the Iglesia del Espíritu Santo

Iglesia Del Espiritu Santo 2

If you did make it down to the City Gates – walk through them on up through Calle Espíritu Santo.

You will see the impressive Iglesia del Espíritu Santo on your right. This impressive church was the first built after the town was taken from the Moors in the 16 Century.

Museum of the Bandits

Museo Del Bandolero, In Ronda

Continue up the hill on the Calle Armiñán and you will come to the Museo del Bandolero. You could bear to the right as you go up the hill and get some views of the city walls.

This is  a museum dedicated to the bandits who operated in this area in the 18th and 19 century. A relatively cheap price to pay to enter – if you have young boys – of all ages they will probably enjoy it.

Museum Lara, Ronda

Continue up the Calle Armiñán to get to the Museo Lara.

This is a bizarre museum – one mans collection of curious things from beautiful things from the past and torture instruments from the Inquisition. Also some unusual typewriters, six-barrelled pistols, delicate prayer books, and fine measuring instruments from the early days of science…

The torture objects and witchcraft collection in the basement are clearly there for effect, and probably not recommendable for families with young children.

The House of the Moorish King

Casa Del Rey Moro Water Gate

Carry on up the Calle Armiñán and turn right when you see the large murial of the Viajes Romanticos. head down there and you will come across the The House of the Moorish King.

The main house is in some disrepair, you are paying the entrance fee to see the hanging gardens and the water mine. While the gardens are also looking a bit neglected there are still some great views of the narrow gorge here.

It is the 230 steps of the water mine that you are here to see. you can go all the way down to the bottom of the gorge and see where the Christian forces breached the Moorish defenses and entered the town.

Puente Viejo

Old Bridge, Ronda, Spain

Ironically, the Puente Viejo is not the oldest bridge in Ronda, as you approach the bridge to your right is the the oldest bridge, which is the Roman Bridge. It may not be the most pretty bridge but it is free of traffic and much more relaxing to walk than the Puente Nuevo.

The bridge is from the 16th or 17th century and offers some great views to both sides. On the one side you will see the Arab Baths and the Roman Bridge, on the other side you can look deep into the gorge, almost all the way to the New Bridge. You will see the water of the river below your feet.

Arab Baths Ronda 2

The Moorish Baths are again optional, depending on how fit you are feeling and time constraints, you will need to return to this point. If you wish to see them you need to descend the steps you saw as you approached the Puente Viejo, these will take you in the direction of the Puente Árabe, take those which will lead you to the Moorish Baths.

The Moorish  Public Baths  are a fine example of Moorish design that they borrowed from the Romans. it was constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries and are the best preserved Arab Baths in Spain. Look at the beautiful star-shaped openings in the ceiling of the three rooms that let in the light in. The water was brought into the building straight from the river with a water wheel.

Stroll through the Cuenca Gardens

Jardines De Cuenca, Ronda 3

Cross the Puente Viejo and on your left are the Jardines De Cuenca.

Walk up these 23 rose-covered terraces, to get away from the crowds and for great views of Puente Nuevo, Puente Viejo and the Roman Bridge from these paths. Also look out for the House of the Moorish king opposite.

Relax in the Plaza del Socorro

Hercules, Plaza Del Socorro, Ronda 2

When you leave the park on Calle Escolleras bear left. This will take you up a narrow cobbled street which leads you to Calle Virgen de los Remedios. Turn left and walk about 300m until you get to Plaza del Socorro.

This is a great little square to relax. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings especially the Iglesia de Socorro. The Plaza is historically significant because it was here that Blas Infante unfurled the flag of Andalusia in 1918. The square also features a statue of Hercules which is a symbol of Andalucia designed by Blas Infante.

Return to Plaza de Toros

There is a short walk from here down Calle Pedro Romero to get back to the bullring.

Our waiter recommended this “ Andalucia by Sunset ” tour as a must-do for a truly local experience. Unfortunately, our schedule was packed, and we couldn’t make it. However, the idea of strolling through Montecorto and El Gastor, soaking in their beauty at the golden hour, and then relaxing over a meal prepared by a professional chef sounds like an experience straight out of a travelogue .

For anyone looking to dive deep into Andalucia’s charm , this tour comes highly recommended. It’s on our list for next time, and it should be on yours too!

“The views were breathtakingly beautiful. The villages were lovely, quiet and serene. The E-bikes were comfortable & easy to use, thus making the journey easily accessible to the non-cyclists considering this tour. The food… Ooohhh THE FOOD!!!! This is our 6th trip to Spain in 7 years – we have eaten paella all over the country. Neil’s paella was far and above the BEST – we could actually taste the freshness of the ingredients – Neil’s paella is what all other paella should aspire to be. Watching the preparation was easily as enjoyable as the eating. Neil & Chriss are the consummate guides and may well be the most gracious and hospitable hosts we have met in our travels. This tour is a MUST when visiting Ronda , to not book it would be a misuse of your travel funds. Thank you Neil & Chriss for the incredible experience.”

5.  Hiking – Montejaque to Ronda – 11km Moderate

⭐️ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 4 Hours | Check Rates & Availability

The hike begins with a discovery of Montejaque’s charms before tackling a stone “zigzag path,” that rewards hikers with breathtaking views. The path weaves through a landscape adorned with agave cacti, olive groves, and traditional farms , painting a picture of rural Spain untouched by time.

  • Age Group : 13+
  • Group Size : Maximum of 7 participants
  • Duration : 4 hours | Moderate Hike

Walking the same paths as those before cars and roads connected Montejaque to Ronda, and witnessing the natural and architectural wonders along the way, is an experience that calls to the heart of every adventurer.

For those who have the chance, this hike from Montejaque to Ronda is an opportunity not just to see, but to connect with the essence of Andalusia.

“Enjoyed a beautiful day out with Elaine! She picked us up at our lodging and we drove to Montejaque, where she gave us a firsthand narrative as she had lived in the area, so she knew so much! Off to the spectacular hiking with a reasonable pace and a beautiful day. Elaine shared information along the way on the history of the path, olive and wine industry as we passed many plantings. It was a good pace with not much in elevation but loads in beauty and scenery. If you like nature and having the wilderness to yourselves , this is for you!”

The Tajo de Ronda Gorge Walk

The Tajo de Ronda Gorge Walk

The initial part of the Tajo de Ronda Gorge walk is currently under construction, with the intention of opening the section that stretches from the ‘Monolith House’ to the base of the Puente Nuevo de Ronda.

Once this section is finished, visitors will have the opportunity to access the base of the Puente Nuevo , and there will be two viewpoints along the cliffs.

Here’s the promo clip from the Ronda town hall

Furthermore, it will be mandatory for participants to wear helmets during the walk, similar to another attraction of this kind, the Caminito del Rey . Additionally, there will be controlled access to prevent the unregulated activity that has been happening until now.

It can be assumed that there will be an entrance fee and the walkway will be managed by a private business once it is open to the public.

At the start of the tour, the control point is expected to be situated at the location of the old ruined house. Adjacent to this, construction is also underway for two viewpoints that will offer visitors a different perspective of the Tajo and the Puente Nuevo. Previously, this area was accessible to tourists but lacked safety measures.

The Tajo de Ronda Gorge Walk

The suspended walkway leads to the Arab baths

Meanwhile, the second phase of this project, approved by the Ministries of Culture and Environment, will connect the Puente Nuevo to the Arab Baths via a suspended walkway approximately three meters above the Guadalevín River.

We will keep this page updated on the progress of the works and the public opening of the Tajo de Ronda Gorge walk.
