How to Solve Safari Crashes on the iPhone

A handful of tweaks may keep Safari from crashing on your iPhone

safari crashing ios 15

  • Ithaca College
  • Switching from Android

What to Know

  • Restart the iPhone. Check Settings > General to see if an update is available. If it is, install it.
  • Other tips to try include: Clear the Safari history and website data, disable AutoFill, disable iCloud Safari syncing. Turn off JavaScript.
  • If everything fails to help, contact Apple.

This article describes several ways you can solve Safari crashes on the iPhone. These troubleshooting steps work with all currently supported models of the iPhone. Version-specific instructions are noted where applicable.

Restart the iPhone

If Safari is crashing regularly, your first step should be to restart the iPhone . Just like a computer, the iPhone needs to be restarted every now and then to reset memory, clear temporary files, and generally restore things to a cleaner state. To restart the iPhone:

After the iPhone restarts, visit the website that crashed Safari. Chances are, things will be better.

Update to the Latest Version of iOS

If a restart doesn’t fix the problem, verify that you're running the latest version of iOS, the iPhone's operating system. Each update to iOS adds new features and fixes all kind of bugs that could be causing crashes. There are two options for updating iOS:

  • Update using iTunes .
  • Update wirelessly directly on the iPhone.

If there is an update available, install it and see if that fixes the problem.

Clear Safari History and Website Data

If neither of those steps work, try clearing out the browsing data stored on your iPhone, including your browsing history and cookies placed on your iPhone by sites you visit. A "flush" also clears this data from all devices signed into your iCloud account. Losing this data may be a mild inconvenience if the cookies provide functionality on some websites, but it's better than having Safari crash. To clear this data, Tap Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

In the menu that pops up from the bottom of the screen, tap Clear History and Data .

Disable AutoFill

If Safari is still crashing, disabling autofill is another option you should explore. Autofill takes the  contact information from your address book and adds it to website forms so that you don't have to type your shipping or email address over and over. To disable autofill, tap Settings > Safari > Autofill.

Move the Use Contact Info slider to off/white to disable your address and phone from populating forms. Move the Names and Passwords slider to off/white to stop username/password pairs from automatic entry. Move the Credit Cards slider to off/white to keep your payment history off.

Disable iCloud Safari Syncing

If none of the steps so far have fixed your crashing problem, the problem may not be with your iPhone itself. It may be iCloud . One iCloud feature syncs your Safari bookmarks between all Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account. That's useful, but it can also be the source of some Safari crashes on iPhone. To turn off iCloud Safari Syncing, tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud and move the Safari slider to off/white.

Turn Off JavaScript

If Safari is still crashing, the problem could be the website you're visiting. Many sites use a programming language called JavaScript to provide all kinds of features and animations. JavaScript is great, but when it's written badly, it can crash browsers. Try turning off JavaScript by visiting Settings > Safari > Advanced and moving the JavaScript slider to off/white.

Isolating the problem isn't the end here. You really need JavaScript to use modern websites, so I recommend turning it back on and not visiting the site that crashed (or disabling JavaScript before you visit it again).

Contact Apple

If everything nothing has worked and Safari is still crashing on your iPhone, your last option is to contact Apple to get technical support. Learn how to get tech support in this article.

3. Allow Safari App to Use Cellular Data

Most iPhone users connect their devices to WiFi networks. Now, at all places, it won’t be possible to get seamless WiFi connectivity. So, at times, you may have to depend upon cellular data to use the internet and utilize various other services that depend upon the internet.

So, make sure that your iPhone is set to use cellular data when no WiFi access is available.

tap on Mobile data iOS

  • Now check the list of installed apps listed in that section and navigate to Safari .

enable mobile data for Safari

After this, even if you are not connected to the WiFi, the Safari browser will work on cellular data automatically.

4. Clear Cached Data of Safari App

Cached data is useful for ease in accessing frequently visited webpages but over a long time, cached data can act as junk. This will affect the performance of the Safari browser. So, you need to remove the cached data present in the Safari browser.

  • Launch the Settings app.

tap on Safari

5. Install Update for Safari Browser

Is the Safari app on your iPhone based on the latest build available on App Store? Most people forget to update the apps and bugs cause the apps to go unresponsive or crash. To check for updates regarding the Safari browser,

  • Open the App Store.
  • On the top-right corner, tap on your profile picture of Apple ID.
  • Then in the list of apps waiting for updates, check if the Safari browser is listed.
  • If it is present, there should be an Update button beside the Safari app which you need to tap.

After installing the new update on the Safari browser, you should be able to use it seamlessly.

6. Reset All Settings of iOS

If no other troubleshooting methods listed above are fixing the Safari browser issue, then you may try to reset the settings of iOS. It will remove all the configs you have set for the Safari browser.

  • Go to Settings .

transfer reset iPhone

  • Provide your passcode when it is asked to authenticate and confirm the action.

After resetting the iPhone check if the Safari browser is now working or not? As the iPhone would be like a new device, so all the apps including the Safari app should work finely.

So, these are the various troubleshooting techniques that you can follow if the Safari browser is not working on iOS 15.

Safari crashes on iphone and how to fix them.

December 21, 2021 Matt Mills How to 0

If you are having trouble using Safari on the iPhone , don’t worry. Errors and problems in the browser usually have a simple and quick solution. And it is that, despite not being usual that they occur in a systematic and generalized way, it is necessary to know the possible causes to be able to stop them. Here are all the steps to fix these bugs in the native iOS browser.

General solutions in this type of failure

Safari crashes on iPhone and how to fix them

When it is the software that fails, which is with almost total probability what happens when Safari gives problems, the normal thing is to always resort to a series of typical actions that end with this type of failure.

  • Close the app and wait 10 seconds before reopening it, thereby forcing it to close permanently and restart its actions in the background.
  • Restart the iPhone , something very useful when another process in the background is causing problems. Although, yes, it is advisable to manually turn off the device and turn it on again after about 15-30 seconds to ensure that all processes have stopped.
  • Update iOS to the latest version available from Settings> General> Software update, thus ensuring that Safari is also in its most recent version.
  • Restoring the device, something that seems too drastic, but that would completely eliminate any software errors. In any case, we recommend that you review everything that we comment below in this post before proceeding to this.

Problems viewing websites in Safari

If the problem you are having is in relation to not being able to open web pages in the browser, there are several identified causes that fortunately usually have a quick and easy solution.

If the app closes by itself

This generic problem, which really not only involves not seeing websites but not being able to perform another action, may be due to problems with the iPhone’s RAM . It is practically the only case in which a hardware failure can intervene in this section. However, if it does not happen to you with other apps, that is probably not the cause.

Most likely, there is a junk file generated by the app that is causing conflicts and therefore Safari cannot even start. In this case, the most sensible thing to do is to do a complete system restore without loading any backup, since if you do, the same error could occur again.

restaurar iphone formas

The page does not load or is blank

This can happen for a number of reasons. The first and totally foreign to you is that the web is the problem due to a crash of its servers or any change at a technical level. This can be easily verified by entering that same website from another device and, in case it does not load, you can rest easy because it is the problem of the creators of the page.

Although in the end the most common is that it is due to a problem related to a bad internet connection . And more if this happens to you with all the pages or a vast majority of them. Therefore, if you were browsing on WiFi , it would be advisable to try to do it using mobile data or vice versa. Also try to carry out other actions that require the internet, such as making a query to Siri for a data for which you need the internet.

Any problem you may have with the coverage or speed of your navigation will ultimately correspond to your operator. That is why you must have their contact at hand to communicate the incident and that they can solve the problem as soon as possible, ruling out then that it is Safari that is giving you errors.

If it’s a security bug

It is possible to come across certain websites where a notice appears stating that the website is not secure. It does not mean that it cannot be accessed, since if you access the advanced configuration option it will allow you to do so, but you may even be asked to enter the iPhone code.

In any case, it is recommended that you do not ignore this alert, as it could endanger the system and / or your personal data. Therefore, make sure that it is indeed a safe website for it, by checking the URL or doing a google search about it in case it ends up being a dangerous website.

Other browser glitches

In addition to those mentioned above, there are other problems in iOS Safari that, despite being less common, can also be annoying. And although they have a somewhat more diffuse origin and solution, they can also be solved.

Handoff does not work

Handoff is the system by which it is possible to use an app on an Apple device and immediately continue using it on another device. If you are browsing in Safari with an iPad , Mac or another iPhone using the same Apple ID, it is possible to continue browsing from the iPhone by opening the browser windows view on the iPhone.

If the pages you are visiting on other devices do not appear in this section, it may be because the function is not activated . You can check it in Settings> General> AirPlay and Handoff. If the function is active, the problem could be due to failures with the internet connection , for which we again recommend contacting the telephone operator.

Problems with extensions

Starting with iOS 15, it is possible to use Safari extensions on the iPhone. Therefore, the first condition for them to work is precisely that your device has a version equal to or later than iOS 15.0 (preferably the most recent one available at the time).

If you already comply with the above, it is advisable that you make sure that the extension is fully compatible . As these extensions are just another application, you must go to the App Store and open its file to check compatibility. Any problem with its use being compatible must be reported to the corresponding developer.

If the tabs won’t close

This is a problem that is really very rare, but it can happen on occasions when there are so many windows open that for some reason the iPhone crashes. Although it is true that going one by one is a method that should always be effective, there are other formulas to erase them.

To delete them suddenly or find an alternative option to delete them by sliding with your finger, you must press and hold the windows icon (upper / lower right, depending on where you have the navigation bar) and choose the corresponding option to delete them all.

cerrar pestañas safari

If it does not work even like this, we refer again to what was commented in the first sections regarding restarting the iPhone and even restoring it to permanently eliminate the possible problems that the software is generating, which is in the end the origin of this failure .

There is also the possibility that you will not find open tabs and this is usually due in the vast majority of occasions when they were closed automatically. And is that if you go to Settings> Safari you will find an option in which you can close these manually or when a certain time passes (a day, a week or a month). If you have the latter configured, there you have the origin.

Not being able to see the history

Several situations can occur here. The first and most common is that you cannot see the history correctly or that it is incomplete. If you use private browsing frequently, it is normal that it does not exit, but if you browse openly, it should appear and the reason why it does not exit is that you have deleted it on another device.

If you have Safari synced with iCloud and you are using it on other devices, you should know that by deleting one or more history entries, they will be automatically deleted from all of them. Therefore, you will have to desynchronize Safari on the iPhone or on the other devices to avoid it or directly not delete anything.

historial iphone

Bookmark issues

Here again we find the iCloud synchronization as the main problem when bookmarks appear, disappear or are modified. If you have this functionality active, you should know that you will have identical bookmarks on all devices and that each modification will be carried over to all of them.

In any case, it is important that you check in Settings> Safari, since in this section you will be able to find options through which to choose what content to see as bookmarks, as well as suggestions from Siri and from the search engine itself.

What to do if Safari keeps crashing

safari crashing ios 15

Does Safari keep crashing on your Mac, iPhone or iPad? Is Safari running so slowly on your Mac that you can’t use it properly? Is Safari just closing on your iPad without warning?

In this feature we’re going to look at what to do when Apple’s Safari web browser isn’t working properly.

There are a few reasons why Safari might be crashing:

There might be something going on in the background of the website you are visiting (or one you have opening another tab).

You might be running an older version of the software with an issue that has since been fixed.

A webpage might be using a plug-in, an extension or other software that has a problem.

Your Mac might be running low on memory or storage space.

There are a few other things that could be causing issues. We’ll look at each below and explain how you can fix, or avoid the problem.

See also: How to use the Safari web browser on the Mac and How to speed up Safari

The first thing to check is how many tabs you have open in Safari. Including any sites you might have ‘Pinned’ in Safari on your Mac.

If you are anything like us, you open new tabs in Safari (Command+T on the Mac, or + on iOS) without closing the one you have stopped using (after all you might need to return to it). Should content of one of these tabs continue to run in the background, then it might be causing an issue.

Each tab or Safari window takes up a little space in memory. Have too many tabs open and Safari starts fighting for resources with other apps, and it ends up running far more slowly than it should.

This is more likely to be a problem on the Mac than the iPad or iPhone, but it’s still worth following the advice below on an iOS device.

How to close multiple tabs in Safari on the Mac

  • Hold down the Option/Alt key and click on File.
  • Choose: Close Other Tab (if you don’t press Option/Alt you will only see Close This Tab.

Every page other than the one you are looking at will be closed.

Close multiple Safari windows on the Mac

If you tend to open many windows while you are using Safari:

  • Click on File
  • Close All Windows

How to close multiple tabs in Safari on iPad/iPhone

Multiple tabs open on your iPhone or iPad? While this shouldn’t cause issues in the same way it might on the Mac, because the tabs you aren’t using will be suspended (they can still be active on a Mac, playing video for example), you may still benefit from closing them all down (least of all because it gets very difficult to find the tab you opened yesterday if you still have tabs open from this time last year).

  • To close all your Tabs by tap and hold on the tab icon in the bottom right.
  • A sheet will open with the options: Close All [Number] Tabs, Close This Tab, New Private Tab, New Tab.
  • Tap on Close All [Number] Tabs.

Check what’s responsible

Check what's responsible

You could also look to Activity Monitor to see if a particular site is being singled out for taking up a lot of resources.

  • Open Activity Monitor.
  • Click on Memory.
  • Sort by Memory to see what is using up the most of your RAM.
  • You can select that site in Activity Monitor and then click on the X to close that process.

The benefit of this method is that you can close the page that is causing the problem and keep other pages open.

Update software

Update software

Apple regularly updates Safari to address security concerns, so it may be that you are experiencing problems that have been corrected by an update (or problems caused by a software update).

You could start by checking what version of Safari you are running.

  • In the Safari menu on your Mac, click on Safari.
  • Click About Safari.
  • A box will pop up that states the version of Safari you are running.

However, your Mac should update Safari automatically whenever Apple releases an update to Safari, because Safari comes as part of macOS. So your version of Safari should be up-to-date as long as your MacOS is…

To check to see if there is an update to macOS you need to follow these steps:

If you are running Mojave:

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Click on Software Update.
  • Your Mac will check for updates before comfirming if your Mac is, or isn’t, up to date. If you need to run an update do so as this may fix any issues you are experiencing.

If you are running High Sierra or older:

  • Click on the Apple logo in the right corner of your Mac screen.
  • Choose Software Update.

It’s the same on an iOS device. The update to Safari will come as part of the operating system update.

To check if iOS needs to be updated:

  • Tap on Settings.
  • Software Update.

Note that sometimes it’s a software update that causes the issues you are experiencing.

For example, back in January 2016, many iOS and Mac users found that their Safari browser would crash every time they tried to tap the URL bar or open a new tab. The Safari app would close, forcing them to launch it again, only for the issue to reoccur.

The problem was reportedly caused by Apple’s Safari Suggestions, the feature that offers up automatically completed URLs as you type in the URL bar.

By the end of January 2016 Apple had apparently fixed the problem with an update, but it seems that for a few months that year Safari continued to be plagued by the issue on and off.

Clear website data and cache

Clear website data and cache

When you visit a web page in Safari it stores a copy of it in a cache. This copy enables it to load the web page faster next time you visit.

Sometimes the web will start to behave oddly if something goes wrong with the cache. Perhaps Facebook seems stuck on what it was displaying yesterday evening, for example.

The best way to fix this is to clear the cache.

How to clear Safari cache on a Mac

You can start by getting rid of all your website data, including your web browsing history.

  • Click Safari in the menu at the top of the screen.
  • Choose Clear History. In older versions of Safari this listed and Website Data as well, but in new versions Website Data is automatically cleared as well (unless you press Option/Alt in which case you see the option to keep Website history).
  • This will actually clear data on all your devices that are logged on to the same iCloud account, so your Mac, iPad and iPhone can be done at the same time. Choose from the last hour, today, today and yesterday, and all history.
  • Make your choice (we recommend All History) and click on Clear History.

That clears your history, but if you want to clear your cache specifically, follow these steps:

  • Click on Safari > Preferences.
  • Click on Privacy.
  • Click on Manage Website Data.
  • Selecting the Privacy icon and clicking the ‘Manage Website Data…’ button.
  • You can delete all cookies and cache by clicking the Remove All button.

The problem with doing this is your Mac will ‘forget’ the autocomplete information you are probably used to it filling in, such as passwords and login details.

Another way to clear your cache is to use the Safari Developer menu to just clear the cache, leaving cookies and other info alone. We have more information about how to clear Safari cache here .

How to clear Safari cache on an iPhone/iPad

You can also clear your Safari cache on your iPhone of iPad. As with the Mac, we’ll start off by clearing your history and website data – which includes the cache. Here’s how to do that:

  • Find Safari (in the list with Passwords & Accounts at the top).
  • Scroll down to Clear Website and History data and tap on that.

That will clear all your history, cookies and other browsing data. Luckily it won’t change your AutoFill information.

It’s not possible to clear only the Safari cache on iPad or iPhone as you can on a Mac.

Remove Flash

Remove Flash

Flash is software used to play video and other interactive content. Many websites switched to HTML 5 some years back because it is less problematic. We think you’ll be happier if you get rid of Flash.

Here’s how to uninstall Flash Player .

If you need Flash for some reason – you may see a Missing Plug-In alert, make sure you have an up to date version and make sure you get it from Adobe . One of the favourite disguises of malware is as a Flash update.

Turn off extensions

Turn off extensions

Extensions (often called plug-ins on other browsers) provide additional functionality to Safari, but they can cause problems.

  • Choose Safari > Preferences > Extensions to see all the extensions on your system.
  • Deselect any extensions you don’t want to run, or even better, uninstall them.

Older versions of Safari had the option to turn off extensions. This setting is no longer available in Safari.

If Safari works better with all extensions turned off, you could go through your extensions one at a time to find out which one is causing problems. Use the check-box next to each extension and turn them all off. Then turn them on one at a time to see which one is problematic, and leave that one set Off until an update is provided.

There are dozens of extensions available for Safari. Read more about the new Extensions for Safari here.

Turn off Virus scanners

Turn off Virus scanners

Virus scanners pay close attention to Safari, because it’s the Mac’s main portal to the internet. It should allow you to get on fine, but if you have a virus scanner try turning it off to see if that helps. If that helps try switching to a different virus program.

Use Reader mode

Use Reader mode

If you find Safari isn’t working for just one website, you could try viewing it in Reader mode.

  • Click on the icon that looks like a cluster lines on the left of the url/search bar.
  • This will open a Reader view of the webpage, removing some of the things that could be causing problems for you, such as adverts.

You can choose for that website to always divert to Reader view.

Just right click on the Reader icon and choose Use Reader Automatically on [website name].

We have more information about using Reader view here .

Delete preferences

Delete preferences

If you’ve tried everything else and Safari still doesn’t work you can delete the preferences from your Home/Library folder.

  • Quit Safari and choose File > Go To Folder in Finder.
  • Enter ~/Library/Safari/ into the Go To Folder Window (don’t miss the tilde ‘~’ at the start) and click Go. This opens your preferences folder.
  • Drag everything in this folder to Trash and restart Safari.

When you restart Safari it will recreate these files as if you have just performed a clean installation.

How to use the Safari web browser on the Mac

Use another browser

Use another browser

Alternatively, try using a different browser. Some websites, especially old sites, struggle with providing support for a variety of browsers. Read our article that evaluates the best Safari alternatives here: Best Mac Browsers and the same for iPhone .

Get more RAM or clear some space

Get more RAM or clear some space

It might not be Safari’s fault. If your Mac (or iOS device) is running out of storage space, or you are low on RAM it might be causing problems for any apps you are running.

You could look into making more space on your Mac – more info here .

Of you could try and free up some RAM . Or Install more RAM in your Mac .

How to Fix: Safari Not Working on iPhone 13/12/11

Safari is to iPhone as Chrome is to Android. That little rhyme shows your safari app is very important to you, as it has web access, browses and adds webpages to your list and for quick access, it can add webpage icons to your home screen.

In addition to that, your safari app has access to and syncs to your passwords, bookmarks, browsing history and more. Safari app is also available on Mac devices and iPads, so undoubtedly it is one app that must always be functional.

safari not working on iphone

So what happens when there is a problem and safari not working on iPhone? Can you fix it? How do you fix it? As always there is a solution to your iPhone issues here. Let’s take a look at some of the issues your safari app could develop.

Part 1: How Many Kinds Safari Not Working Issues are There?

This section will explain just a few issues the safari app can develop:

  • 1. Safari running slow : As with every browser, at some point safari can run slower than expected. On Macs, this can be as a result of opening a lot of tabs at this point safari starts struggling to bear the load.
  • 2. Safari not responding : Sometimes you could tap your safari app or clock on it with your mouse and it doesn’t respond; it just keeps showing a non-stop, endless loading circle. This is disheartening.
  • 3. Safari keeps crashing : Just like the issue in number 2, the safari app might just start crashing, if you try to open it, it closes almost immediately. Safari apps can develop this issue.
  • 4. Safari not playing youtube videos: Sometimes Youtube videos won’t play on your safari browser or the videos won’t show clearly, probably show a green or dark screen and sometimes you may have clear video but no sound.
  • 5. Hiding Website URLs: You might notice that some website URLs don’t show fully, probably the root of the site address is what is displayed. This is noticed in new versions of the app, but this can be fixed in the settings tab.

So we have seen some of the problems that the safari app can develop. Why is safari not working on my iPhone? How can you fix the problem if the safari app on your iPhone is not working? Let’s discuss these.

Part 2: Why is Safari Not Working on My iPhone 12/13

  • 1. Safari app has a problem: Like every other app, the safari app could develop a problem. It might be a system glitch, it might be overloaded or it needs an update. So, if any of this is wrong with your safari app, it won’t work properly. All you have to do is find out which of these is the problem and fix it.
  • 2. WiFi connection: Remember that your safari app works with an internet connection, so if you aren’t connected to WiFi or it is too slow your safari app will not work. To check properly, you can try another app that uses WiFi, like Facebook, Facetime or Instagram, if those apps don’t open then the issue is with your WiFi.
  • 3. Cellular data: So what happens if you use a cellular network to access your safari app? Sometimes if your service is not fast enough to load your data, it might affect your safari app, it won’t work.

These are just a few reasons why safari on iPhone not working. We’ve seen the problem, let’s take a look at solutions.

Part 3: How to Fix Safari Not Working on iPhone iOS 15

Follow these suggestions as they apply to solving the issue:

1. Use StarzSoft Fixcon to Solve Safari Keeps Crashing

We did not save the best for last, we brought it first. StarzSoft Fixcon is the best option for you to fix your iPhone problems. When it comes to Fixcon, you can trust it 100 percent, it gives you great value, one of which is you don’t lose your files. Suppose you already bookmarked some sites you would like to revisit and then your safari app stops working, imagine fixing it and losing the information you saved, painful right? Well, with Fixcon you don’t have to worry about this, it saves your data while solving your problem.

Let’s see how you can make use of this ingenious software:

  • 1. Download the app on the official webpage, and use the free trial version to test out its goodness.
  • 2. Select the standard repair option. This is the mode for issues like this and it ensures you don’t lose your data. The other two modes you would see are for more complicated problems and they don’t protect your files from being lost. So stick to standard repair.

Once the process is over, your iPhone will restart and your file is sure to be intact.

2. Close and Reopen the App to Solve Safari Not Playing Youtube Videos

So, this suggestion fixes very minor crashes or bugs. So if your safari app is not working, closing the app and reopening it would give it a fresh start.

  • 1. To close and reopen the app for iPhones with Home buttons: Double-press the button to open the app switcher. After that, swipe up the Safari app and off the top of the screen. When Safari is closed it no longer appears in the app switcher. Open Safari again to see if it’s working now.
  • 2. To close and reopen the app for iPhones without Home buttons: Swipe upwards from the bottom to the centre of the screen. Then, hold your finger in the centre of the screen until the app switcher opens.
  • 3. Proceed to swipe up the Safari app and off the top of the screen. When Safari is closed it no longer appears in the app switcher. Open Safari again to see if it’s working properly now.

3. Clear History and Web Data

Since your iPhone is built to save Web data whenever you visit a page in safari, your saved data can sometimes slow your safari overtime when this is the case. Follow these steps:

Go to Settings >> tap Safari >>Scroll down tap Clear History and Website Data >> finally confirm your decision by tapping Clear History and Data again.

safari not playing youtube videos

Once you have cleared this stored data, reopen the app to see if it works.

4. Fix Safari is Running Slow with iOS Update

When it comes to your iPhones, the importance of updates cannot be overemphasised. To fix existing bugs and glitches, updates are necessary to keep all your apps up and running. So, if your safari app is not working, ensure you check that your iOS is up to date.

To check for updates, follow these steps: Settings >> General >> Software update >> Download and Install if there is a new update.

safari is running slow

At last, turn on your device and go to App Store to download the latest version of the apps you need again.

5. Contact Support

Apple support is available online, over-the-phone, through the mail, and in-person, so if you tried our suggestions and you still have a safari app that is not working, reach out to them. But we are confident you would find a solution from our suggestions.

Final Words

Yay! We have finally solved the problem of your safari app not working. Remember to check your Internet connection, update your phone and best of all, use StarzSoft Fixcon software for a complete repair and data retention experience. Now go ahead and surf all you want!

Safari, WKWebview Crash in iOS 15 Beta2

We are servicing html5 games. I got a report from a user, and I heard that it will be whited out shortly after entering the game lobby in ios 15 beta. It was not a problem in iOS 14, but in iOS 15 beta2, it is forcibly terminated shortly after entering the lobby. Safari and WKWebview are all the same, and the same problem occurs regardless of the device. The devices I tested were ipad mini4, iphone 11, iphone 12.

Seeing that it does not crash when the light effect tween is turned off, I think that the amount of memory available to the GPU for rendering has decreased.

Does anyone have similar symptoms related to html5 games?

yes, we have experienced Safari performance problem on ios 15 too.

even worse on beta 5, using a game from https://www.pixijs.com/gallery https://tooncup.cartoonnetwork.co.uk/home/

it gets stuck at the entering game, while there is no problem on ios 14.

Accepted Reply

try to disable option "GPU Process: Canvas Rendering". we don't know why it's on by default on beta 4 and 5.

The same issue with WKWebView, freezes on iOS 15 when the app goes to the background and returns back, but works correctly on iOS 14 and lower. Where do we need to disable this option? "GPU Process: Canvas Rendering"

You can find this setting in "Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Experimental Features" -- there should be a bunch of "GPU Process" Experimental WebKit Features enabled here.

I can only add that we are also experiencing this issue with our web application, which is a canvas editing platform allowing for many canvases to be composited on top of one another. No problems for iOS versions < 15, and disabling this feature fixed the issue for us.

We are looking to understand if this feature is intended to be enabled as part of iOS 15's official release. Curious if there is any insight available.

Thanks, this also helps us with the native Safari browser, but how to disable it from the code in the WKWebView that we are using in our application?

  • If there is a large amount of JavaScript to be parsed at once, the JavaScript engine seems to be very slow.
  • Create a Graphics object using a path with many points and use it as a mask, and if you move it, memory leak occurs and the webview dies. ( in Cavas mode )
  • If you do not disable GPU Process:Canvas Rendering when rendering in WebGL mode, it may become stuck when moving the scene. (tested in safari)

How can we fix this from code in WKWebKit?

same question

Thanks for your post. If you've filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com , please post the number here. We're looking for as many reproducible case reports as possible.

It seems the trigger is unicode string. We made a demo app and it worked in iOS15. After we put a unicode string it started to crash.

Can you share your demo app?

Thanks for your post. If you've filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com , please post the number here and if you can attach your sample to the bug report, we can take a look.

Encountered the same problem, how to solve it?

I get the problem that video only sound but no picture,in wkwebview iOS 15, both in our app and safari with device ipad 6, ipad mini 5 and iphone 8p i disable option "GPU Process: Media", and in safari it get right. so how can we fix this from code in WKWebKit?

Thanks for your post. If you've filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com , please post the number here. Attaching any examples demonstrating the issue would be great.

in iOS 15.1 Beta 3, my problem seems to have been solved. No clue in the release note

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/ios-ipados-release-notes/ios-ipados-15_1-release-notes

IOS 15.0.2 still crash

This new feature completely broke my app - which is a WKWebView with a large canvas. Performance is incredibly slow and renders the app useless. Worked great in iOS 14..

How can we disable this setting in a WKWebView?

Why would it be that that canvases performed better on the CPU but Apple dropped that as the default and switched to GPU processing? Wouldn't the switch be to increase performance?

Really concerned about the future of my app if we can't disable this 'feature'. Will the setting eventually go away and this will be the default?

Thanks for your post. If you've filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com , please post the number here. We're looking for reproducible cases so any example test sites or samples you can share would be great.

We have the same problem. Our iOS and iPad app is built with WKWebView technologies and on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 we now have huge problems with performance and stability because of this GPU option by default (on the previous iOS/iPadOS versions it's fine).

And we couldn't find a way how to turn this GPU option off in the app. Apple team, we need your help with this, a lot of users struggle.

Thanks for your post. Have you filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com too? If so, could you please post the number here so we can take a look?

Hi there, yes we have! The number is 9669270. We also attached sysdiagnose files.

Any updates on this?

I reported it to apple, but this issue still keeps ignored. Monopoly companies are always willful, what can you do

IOS 15.0.1 still crash.

My webGL app based on three.js still crash too on iOS 15.0.1. What’s going on Apple ?

same problem. Using canvas. Background the page then come back and everything is almost, but not quite, frozen. Users will have no clue how to fix this themselves.

Thanks for your post here in the forums. I'm hoping you've filed a bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com as well. If so, could you please post the number here? We're looking for reproducible cases so attaching a test app or URL to the report would be super helpful.

Same here, iPhone Xr(iOS15.0.1), pixijs wkwebview , background then foreground everything frozen(not 100%, keep trying for a few times you’ll trigger this). After some investigation, I find changing canvas size and some other operations takes too long to perform which is the cause of frozen. Operations like fillText & fillRect not working at all, canvas data url stay the same as before.

And disable GPU Process: canvas rendering not help, can still reproduce in 15.0 simulator, in my iPhone Xr(iOS 15.0.1) this bug too hard to reproduce, so I can't tell is it really fixed or just bad luck.

We have the same issue, bug reported - FB9687881 , please take a look

Is this report answered? Seems I don’t have the permission to view it. Will you please comments here if got any official solution? Thanks a million!

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/69554317/safari-15-0-video-element-position-fixed-not-working-on-page-load

this help us, video now work fine.

We have similar issue. Our app using xTerm.js in WKWebview encounters character disappear and frequently crash.

It is all good on Safari on all devices and Simulators, and also on SFSafariViewController. It just happens in WKWebview on iPadOS 15.1 and iPhone Simulator with iOS 15.0 according to our test.

So we guess some features in WKWebview (possibly Canvas) have different behavior but we don't know what are they.

Any updates? Canvas in WKWebView are unusable.

Same issue occurred on both Safari & WKWebview of iOS 16.0.3 in Oct 2022.

On speicific iPhone models (tested on iPhone 12/13/SE 2020), when "GPU Process DOM Rendering" (previously GPU Process: Canvas Rendering), under [Settings] > [Safari] > [Advanced] > [Experimental Features] is ON, my website ran extremely slow and crashed very often. Also, webfonts, images and icons were not loaded properly. In the meantime, parts of the page blacked out occasionally without reason. However, iPhone XR seems not be affected.

  • My website: https://hearty.me/hearty

safari crashing ios 15

did anyone got the solution for above issue? I don't want to turn of the default settings. In Safari iOS16+ "GPU Process-DOM Rendering" is on by default and canvas rendering is freezing the screen

WebGL + Safari crashes after iOS upgrade to 15.4.1

Hi there, I'm aware that WebGL+Safari has many problems and complications, like memory management issues etc. but after upgrading my iOS device to 15.4.1, it crashes on start, producing following wasm error(s) (I changed the actual address to website.com, the rest remains unaltered): abort() at jsStackTrace@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:20124 stackTrace@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:20409 abort@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:1002 ___cxa_allocate_exception@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:56582 wasm-stub@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[983]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[11610]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[16673]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[4275]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[11818]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[30967]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[52477]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[11222]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[996]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[52476]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[26977]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[581]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[30966]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[9075]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[52811]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[46180]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[11203]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[34807]@[wasm code] wasm-stub@[native code] invoke_iiii@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:350819 <?>.wasm-function[34807]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[2140]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[26926]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[4893]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[1277]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[5052]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[39602]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[1394]@[wasm code] <?>.wasm-function[34821]@[wasm code] wasm-stub@[native code] @blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:291006 callMain@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:364656 doRun@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad07217da:3:365211 run@blob: https://website.com/3467d3de-6401-44d1-b63b-accad072 I don't even know what to do with this. Unity Technologies

iOS and Safari 15.4 broke WebGL builds quite badly with a number of regressions. There's a long thread here, https://forum.unity.com/threads/ios-15-webgl-2-issue.1176116/ , with a work-around for the memory crash that I had proposed. Besides the memory crash, there were a number of WebGL graphics regressions as well. We can only hope 15.5 will be released soon.

There are various issues on my iPhone since updating to iOS 17.4.1

This new updates seems to have too many bugs, instead of fix. Wi-Fi won’t work. None of the apps open, just keep getting black screen, phone overheating, draining battery faster than charging, can’t access shared iCloud pictures, can not FaceTime. Safari is just blank page. Restarted Wi-Fi, phone, apps, but NOTHING WORKS!!! Can’t surf at all, games are blank too…. Need immediate fix!!!!

after updating my iOS to 17.4.1, my battery health level goes down. What happened? Before updating to latest iOS , it was fine. What’s going on Apple?

Apr 10, 2024 5:01 AM in response to Chinguu

I know and there is also some Bluetooth bug. If you pause Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or whatever music streaming platform you use for a few seconds, your AirPods, Beats Studio Buds, or whatever headphones or earbuds you use randomly disconnects and then reconnects. It’s annoying and Apple needs to do something about it ASAP

My phone completely crashed and died - can’t even turn it on now!

I’ve lost all my bookmarks and favourites in safari, I didn’t realise I needed to sync these things on the iCloud, no previous update has wiped them from existence. Now all my saved quick links are gone.

edit: my works app now doesn’t work, and the baby camera monitor app doesn’t work either. Who even allowed this “update”?

among the other issues encountered with this update, that one is the most infuriating… haven’t had to try my AirPods yet with the Bluetooth issues but my garmin no longer gets notifications 😑😑😑

Force Restart your iPhone, which is something recommended after every iOS update --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Apr 9, 2024 6:18 AM in response to Chinguu

I also encounter a lot of problems. Some apps like Files and Waze crash for no reason. the only solution that works temporarily is to undo a forced restart but the problem comes back regularly.

The support told me to disconnect and reconnect, to reset all the settings, to reinstall the IOS version 17.4.1 via iTunes, but nothing works, it's very annoying.

If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

And sometimes typing in the issue you're facing to the search box will turn up solutions.

If you can get back into your phone, so to speak, 9to5Mac reported that Apple released a new version of 17.4.1, but it was only available through a computer. On a Mac, plug the phone into the computer, open a Finder window, and select your iPhone in the side bar. If the side panel isn't showing, go to the View menu and click Show Side Bar. On older Macs you may have to use iTunes, but it is similar. On a Windows computer I believe you either open iTunes or the Apple Devices app, but I'm not familiar with that setup.

Anyway, once you have done that, there should be a "page" for your phone. Choose General from the top row, and there will be a Check for Update button. From there you should be able to update your phone the newer version of 17.4.1.

I updated "over the air" to 17.4.1 and didn't see any problems. But when I saw the article I updated again and my phone went through the whole process, which seems to indicate that this is a different update. Since then it has worked fine, as far as I can see.

9to5Mac reports that the build number for the over-the-air update is 21E236, but the one through a computer is 21E237.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

iOS 18 WWDC 24 Feature 2

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.
